6 Key Steps to Stop Water Damage Before It Starts
Tumblr media
Water damage can strike when you least expect it, and the repairs can be costly. Minor incidents may cost between $1,300 and $5,600, but if left unchecked, the damage can escalate to tens of thousands of dollars.
Fortunately, a few preventative measures can help protect your home and save you from future headaches and expenses.
Regular Plumbing Inspections
Check for leaks under sinks, around toilets, and behind appliances. Even a small drip can lead to major issues over time.
Seal Windows and Doors
Ensure that windows and doors are properly sealed to keep water from entering your home. Repair any cracks or gaps in the frames as soon as you notice them.
Roof and Gutter Maintenance
Inspect your roof for missing or damaged shingles, and clean your gutters regularly to prevent clogs. Overflow can cause water to pool around your home’s foundation. Consider adding gutter guards and downspout extenders to direct water away from your property.
Monitor Kitchens and Bathrooms
Check the caulking around sinks, bathtubs, and read more

Breast Cancer Prevention Starts with Self-Exams and Self-Care
Tumblr media
Understanding Breast Cancer: Support and Self-Exams for Women
One in eight American women will face a breast cancer diagnosis in her lifetime. This year alone, an estimated 310,720 women will be diagnosed with this disease. Given these statistics, it’s likely that everyone knows someone who has been personally affected by breast cancer.
To support those navigating this challenging journey, Dr. Andrew J. Shapiro, MD, FACS, Medical Director of the Advanced Breast Center at Wellington Regional Medical Center, leads a free breast cancer support group. This group is open to anyone who has experienced a breast cancer diagnosis or has supported a loved one through the process, regardless of where or when they received treatment.
The support group, hosted by Sheila Palacios, MSN-Ed, RN, OCN, Oncology Nurse Navigator, meets on the fourth Sunday of every month from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Wellington Regional Medical Center Community Room.
Dr. Shapiro emphasizes the importance of regular mammograms, recommending they begin at age 40, along with monthly breast self-exams.
“Home self-exams are an effective way to maintain good breast health and stay aware of any changes that you can discuss with your doctor,” Dr. Shapiro explains.
For effective self-exams, choose a specific day each month to make it a habit—like the first of the month. Keeping a journal or using your phone to track your findings can help you monitor any changes over time.
“A self-exam takes just a few minutes and can easily be done while getting dressed, lying in bed, or taking a shower,” says read more

Spotlight on Healthy Aging: Insights from Palm Beach Orthopedic Institute
Tumblr media
As we observe September as Healthy Aging Month, it's a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining our health and wellness as we navigate the journey of aging. This month, Dr. John Hinson from the Palm Beach Orthopedic Institute shares invaluable insights on how we can promote bone health, maintain mobility, and enjoy our favorite sports well into our later years.
Embracing Healthy Aging
Healthy aging is about more than just adding years to life; it's about adding life to years. Dr. Hinson emphasizes that as we age, it's crucial to remain proactive about our health. Regular exercise, particularly for aging athletes, can significantly reduce the risk of chronic injuries, ensuring that we can continue to engage in the activities we love.
The Power of Home Exercise Programs
For aging athletes, a tailored home exercise program is vital. Dr. Hinson highlights the importance of incorporating regular shoulder stretching and strengthening exercises into our routines. These exercises can prevent injuries that often develop as we age, allowing us to stay active and enjoy sports without the fear of chronic pain or injury.
Safety First: Injury Prevention Tips
Injury prevention should always be a priority, and Dr. Hinson advocates for a common-sense approach. Whether you're playing tennis, golf, or engaging in any sport, ensuring a clean and dry playing surface is essential. Being aware of your surroundings and potential hazards can greatly reduce the risk of falls and acute injuries.
Additionally, Dr. Hinson suggests utilizing protective gear, such as braces or pads, to safeguard against upper extremity injuries. For anyone experiencing chronic pain, it’s crucial to seek treatment to address these concerns before they escalate.
Understanding Rotator Cuff Injuries
One of the most common injuries among aging athletes is a rotator cuff tear. Dr. Hinson explains that this injury often arises gradually, with symptoms that can manifest without a specific triggering event. Patients read more
