Spotlight on Healthy Aging: Insights from Palm Beach Orthopedic Institute
Tumblr media
As we observe September as Healthy Aging Month, it's a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining our health and wellness as we navigate the journey of aging. This month, Dr. John Hinson from the Palm Beach Orthopedic Institute shares invaluable insights on how we can promote bone health, maintain mobility, and enjoy our favorite sports well into our later years.
Embracing Healthy Aging
Healthy aging is about more than just adding years to life; it's about adding life to years. Dr. Hinson emphasizes that as we age, it's crucial to remain proactive about our health. Regular exercise, particularly for aging athletes, can significantly reduce the risk of chronic injuries, ensuring that we can continue to engage in the activities we love.
The Power of Home Exercise Programs
For aging athletes, a tailored home exercise program is vital. Dr. Hinson highlights the importance of incorporating regular shoulder stretching and strengthening exercises into our routines. These exercises can prevent injuries that often develop as we age, allowing us to stay active and enjoy sports without the fear of chronic pain or injury.
Safety First: Injury Prevention Tips
Injury prevention should always be a priority, and Dr. Hinson advocates for a common-sense approach. Whether you're playing tennis, golf, or engaging in any sport, ensuring a clean and dry playing surface is essential. Being aware of your surroundings and potential hazards can greatly reduce the risk of falls and acute injuries.
Additionally, Dr. Hinson suggests utilizing protective gear, such as braces or pads, to safeguard against upper extremity injuries. For anyone experiencing chronic pain, it’s crucial to seek treatment to address these concerns before they escalate.
Understanding Rotator Cuff Injuries
One of the most common injuries among aging athletes is a rotator cuff tear. Dr. Hinson explains that this injury often arises gradually, with symptoms that can manifest without a specific triggering event. Patients read more

ACCF Hosts the 13th Annual Witches of Delray Beach Bike Ride
Tumblr media
Delray Beach, FL – On Saturday, October 26th, 2024, the streets of Downtown Delray Beach will be transformed into a lively Halloween spectacle as the 13th Annual Witches of Delray Beach Bike Ride takes flight. Hosted by the Achievement Centers for Children & Families (ACCF), this community event has become a beloved tradition, combining festive fun with a meaningful cause. Hundreds of witches will soar down Atlantic Avenue on their uniquely decorated "brooms" (bikes) in a morning full of spooky fun, all to raise funds for local families in need.
Event Details: A Wickedly Fun Ride
This year's Witches Ride promises to be a grand return to Downtown Delray Beach. Starting at City Hall, the ride will zoom down the vibrant Atlantic Avenue, ending at the historic Old School Square Pavilion. Guided by the Delray Beach Police Department, 300 witches will show off their best witch costumes, adorned hats, and extravagantly decorated bicycles.
The ride kicks off promptly at 8:30 a.m., but the fun doesn’t end there. After the ride, participants can gather at the Old School Square Outdoor Pavilion Stage for an awards presentation. Prizes will be awarded in categories like “Best Costume,” “Best Witch Cackle,” “Best Decorated Broom (Bike),” and “Best Group Theme.” It’s a magical morning of camaraderie, creativity, and celebration.
Pre-Event Festivities: “Not Your Basic Witch” Hat Decorating
This year, ACCF has added a new element to the Witches Ride preparations. Amanda Perna, designer and Project Runway alum, will host the “Not Your Basic Witch” Hat Decorating Event on October 1st at the House of Perna Boutique & Atelier, located at 8 E. Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach.
Starting at 7 p.m., attendees will have access to an array of hat decorating supplies, from traditional materials to couture crafts, ensuring that no witch is caught without a fabulous hat. With limited space, witches should register quickly! (A rain date is scheduled for October 8th.)
Witches Brew: A Signature Fundraiser
Long-time event partner Tim Finnegan’s Irish Pub will also host the annual “Witches Brew” on Friday, October 18th from 6 to 9 p.m. This festive fundraiser is another great way to support the Witches Ride while enjoying a fun night out with the community.
