Making desi aesthetics, pt. 1

So, me and @zeherili-ankhein were discussing about the lack of diversity in Indian aesthetics. Like, the in-general aesthetic for the brown crowd is "desi core", at leas the one that is extremely popular, and it just feels...generalized stuff? Like, chai, lehengas, bollywood films...?

Ofc, no hate to desicore, but I just feel that for a country as diverse as India, we should have more aesthetics, yk? So, I kinda made some basic aesthetics for girls, with the help of my sweetu santra @zeherili-ankhein , and I really, really wanna hear y'all's inputs in this.

The first is the Rajasthani aesthetic. Now this makes up a HUGEEE chunk of desi core, tbh. Like in clothing, it can include Lehengas, the typical Rajputi poshak, bandhani sarees etc, with rajasthani prints like gotapatti and all. For daily use, like, I think angarakha kurtis, paired with palazzos will look VERY nice. Dupattas with bandhani prints too. For a more modern look, pencil skirts and fitted jeans will look good, i think. With v-neck tops??? Also, boots.

This aesthetic was deep jewel colors, like ruby red, sapphire blue, emerald green etc., with gold accents. Bold chunky jewelry + local Rajasthani jewelry will look very nice too. For makeup, I think bold kohl eyes and dark red/brown lipstick shades will be really pretty.

The second is inspired by the Mughal paintings. Dresses include flowy kurtis and dresses especially anarkalis, ghararas and shararas, and flowy dupattas. In modern dresses, flowy sundresses, heart-neck tops and long skirts will look so cute omg. Kurtis can be paired with palazzos. Traditional clothes can have zari work done. Also flats or block heels will look v v good.

This includes pastels shades, like various shades of pink, cream, ivory, blue, lavender, mint green, etc. In jewelry, I think silver and pearls will suit this aesthetic. This has a light makeup look, with blush plus light pink/nude lipstick shades.

Third is the Vrindavan aesthetic, this mostly focuses on Krishna. It is like, nature inspired, is prett fresh, and gives you the vibe of an old temple. Jewelry involving peacock and lotus motifs will suit very well, along with flower prints. The fabric is mostly cotton, and the colors include orange, yellow, lotus pink, soft blues, white etc.

This aesthetic is pretty relaxed, and as for dresses, I think loose kurtis, wide trousers, cardigans and crochet tops will look v cutu :> Accessories mein, simple sandals, hairbands, cute necklaces and tiny earrings will look so, so pretty. Also bangles and payals>>>>

The last one for this part is more inspired from the earth. It has more earthy tones, colors like deep reds, mustard yells, olive green, brown etc etc. Fabrics include cotton and khadi, and this aesthetic has a rustic and boho-ish vibe, i think. Prints are block prints (ily block prints uwu)

I think long coats would really suit this aesthetic? And idk why but TURTLENECKS TOO OMG. For jewelry, I think vintage and oxidized jewelry will look very good, especially nose pins.

What do you all think? I have four more aesthetics left, will post them in part 2, one is bollywood inspired, one is related to classical dance, one is more eastern indian (bengal-odisha) and then the last is south indian. This is js the basic draft I made of these aesthetics

GOD. the makeup and accessories system in Infinity Nikki is such a breath of fresh air from Love Nikki's system

(no i have not played Shining Nikki so I'm sorry if anything i mention here already was fixed in SN).

Thoughts Below

Of course with LN being a 2d game it has its limitations (and there's stuff to be said about letting players choose what layer they want accessories to be on) so creating any sort of outfit that uses a lot of accessories is bound to have some overlap/clipping. While there is places for you to be able to dress up with the sole purpose of looking good (Competition, Starry Corridor), the player is mainly creating outfits for the sake of story progression or other scoring events (like stylist arena). And god, uhm, most people in comp just use paid/complete sets. But that's another thing and I will not rant about that one today. I'm sure every LN player has tried to just make a cute little outfit and "oh that veil would look so good but GOD the overlap. that is horrible".

They've taken so much time and put so much care into IN to make sure that the accessories DONT look bad when you wear them with other things and certain hair styles. gone are the days of your pigtails sticking out of your hat. I've probably spent at least an hour just going through the different accessories and hair combos so i can see what changes from each one.

Its just so good!!!! the attention to detail!!!!!!

AND GOD DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE MAKEUP. Firstly the ability to pick and choose different mascara, eye colors, eyeshadow/blush, lipstick, and eyebrows!!!!! LN's makeup system was HORRIBLE. Another, kind of, issue of the 2d design, although I'm SURE they could have done better. For those who have not played LN, the makeup was all one item and had the foundation/skin color built into it, thus applying a makeup would use the foundation color for your face. Setting a light skin color and a dark makeup is. not good. and even then LN does not have very diverse makeups (at least not ones easily accessible to players). They have a 'diverse' range of skin tones you can collect for free (which they only put in like 3 ish years ago? maybe?) but most of them are shades of grey for some reason. I've never seen anyone in Comp or SC take advantage of this, but during the main story or other scored events it can be. annoying. when Momo is unintentionally telling you to do blackface because you need a good lively score.

IN does not do this to you. thankfully. They give you 3 skin tones off the bat. technically 4 if you include the skin tone if you don't select any, which is just slightly darker than the White skin tone. And as far as I can tell there is no way to set your face to a different shade than your body. The "base makeup" item is essentially eyeshadow and blush. Makeup seems to be just a fun little thing you can do, since it's not connected to the completion of any sets or have any stats attributed to it. (The skin colors also do not have any stats, which is good). (There is makeup that go with certain sets, but they are not required)

Other little things I really appreciate is a rework of the tagging system. So glad that some of those tags are gone, and it makes sense that they would slim it down a bit. I do understand why they also reworked the stats system, but I do also miss it. <- That all being said, I have not gotten to any stylist battles yet so I do not know exactly how the tags or stats impact the gameplay

My redesign for Lynette from Fresh Dolls!

While I admire Fresh Dolls for their commitment to diversity and inclusion, one drawback that always kept me from loving them as much as I do other lines has always been how their fashions are a bit... plain. So I decided to give my take on an outfit for one of their characters, Lynette! (Further elaboration into my thoughts and process below "Keep Reading")

According to her character bio:

"Lynette loves all things fashion. This young globetrotter has travelled with her parents picking up fashion tips from all around the world , shaping her into a fierce fashionista. She dreams of creating original fashions. Splashing them with fun, bold colors will be her signature. Lynette shows originality in her look and loves transforming her hair into colorful works of art"

Sadly I feel this isn't really well reflected in her current doll form

So for my redesign, I decided to lean more heavily into patterns and secondary colors to make her fashion sense more colorful and worldly! I wanted to combine some of my favorite pieces from her dolls: her wave 2 camo pants, and her wave 3 striped shirt and magenta frohawk. I wanted her lipstick to be colorful without being gaudy, so I went with a darker shade of purple to match the stripes of her shirt. And to make them pop, I gave her pants a more Hot Pink tone as opposed to the pale pink seen below.

Overall I'm really proud of how this turned out! I tried keeping it as somewhat realistic to be replicated on a real doll (excluding the drawstrings on her pants, of course).

Me personally, I simplify a lot of the character designs because it is WAY TOO HARD to completely mimic (make it more fun to draw for yourself so you enjoy drawing them!) but I make sure to stick to their colour scheme, or somewhere close.

Make it fun for yourself!

Another example is hair - I've been drawing these fellas for a long time (way longer than I've been posting) and I've always stuck to these specific ways of drawing them.

Basically note the foundation of what makes it look like that character (Neuro's duo-colour hair, Griffin's slick back hair, Shade's one way swept hair, Ash's upward messy hair)

That's another tip for if you're gonna simplify them - note the characteristics that make the character look like who they are.

Like Ash, Shade and Ronin's jawline, Morro's eyebrows, Ronin's wrinkles, etc.

I think the most important aspects to look at are the eyebrows! They're all different on characters, even if they're small differences, but they're what make the biggest difference when boiled down enough!

Of course, you can have fun with those aspects too like I did with Shade's lips! (Added lipstick. Cute)

Or take it further, headcannon races and change up their hair type or facial features (they don't really have one to begin with anyway). Be open to diversity cause there's a lot of that here 🔥

I ask her if she’s been briefed on the subject of today’s interview. Her press man told her I was writing “about California,” she says with a knowing twinkle, “and how magnificent it is, and how it is the leader in the world.”

Yes. And no.

Once in a while, an East Coast journalist will come out to California to find out what’s happening in the land of dreams. As Los Angeles goes, so goes the nation; if San Francisco loses its charm, what then? “It’s what’s coming next for you,” Pelosi says, portentously.

Governor Gavin Newsom has upped the ante by branding California the “True Freedom State,” a rejoinder to Governor Ron DeSantis’s “Freedom State” slogan, pitching Florida as a kind of anti-woke protectorate. Newsom, perhaps teasing a future White House bid, offers California as the left-wing alternative, a liberal’s shining city on a hill, where diversity and tolerance, science and innovation, money and opportunity form a cutting-edge vision of America. The Golden State has always been as much an idea as a place, a fantasyland for Easterners to pine for and put down. As a model for America, however, it’s giving off decidedly mixed signals: encampments of homeless people, floods and mudslides, drought and wildfires, earthquakes and depleted waterways, home invasions and mass shootings, tech layoffs and entertainment and teacher strikes, drained government coffers and spooky economic shudders. If, as one Democratic consultant told me, California is the “coming attractions for America,” it looks like a trailer for Mad Max: PCH.

People living under bridges and climatological disasters are sobering counterfactuals to the California Dream and also wrenches in the liberal machinery. Increasingly, among Democrats, there is a call for greater toughness. Fear, as Pelosi knows, is contagious. And the “biggest challenge” to California, she says, is “safety.” Democrats, says Pelosi, might have captured the House last year if New York’s governor hadn’t misread the political winds on the issue of crime. “They lost four seats and the governor came within four points,” she notes. “It was terrible on the issue of safety.”

Trying to write about the whole of California is akin to the proverbial blind man trying to describe an elephant. But California, by any measure, is undergoing a vibe shift. As a pal of mine in San Francisco put it, “The liberal atom has been split.”
