1932: Letters to Santa (Jarratt)
December, 92 years ago!
From the Waverly Dispatch, Volume 45, Number 51, 23 December 1932 - page 4. For Jarratts (remember, the Town was not incorporated until 1938), each child's request has been placed here individually. One child's request (the last listed) was on two separate columns and we digitally spliced them for this post.

All above are clips, preserved as such for anyone who wishes to keep what an individual person they may know might have wanted for Christmas at a young age. Undoubtedly, most persons (if not all) listed are no longer living - remember, 1932 was 92 years ago.

Another book I finished reading this year, and this one is SO good. I picked it up at Concarolinas directly from the small press publisher that was vending at the convention. It's set in the 1920s primarily in North Carolina, and is a bunch of interconnected short stories that tell the tale of Mamma Lucy who is, indeed, not a witch. She solves mysteries, fixes problems, saves lives, drives away evil spirits, dunks on a bunch of evil men, and is overall a certified badass magic woman. But not a witch. She's also an old black woman wandering the fucking South in the 1920s.
If you can track down a copy of this book I REALLY recommend reading it, it is so good. I blazed through it because I was so invested. There isn't an overarching plot necessarily, but each chapter (and they very wildly in length) is the tale of a different escapade of Mamma Lucy's as she travels around the American South. If you have something you need to do, read to the end of a chapter and then STOP. Don't read the first paragraph of the next chapter or you WILL get sucked in.

WHAT IT TAKES
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Buckingsim Palace]
[??]: (inaudible talking)
Queen Katherine: (on the phone) Yes, I see. No, no. Thank you.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: That was the palace press secretary. In her view, even after the outpouring of love the country showed the family after granny's passing, the steps we've taken haven't done the trick. The rumors about our marriage still haven't gone away.
Prince Rainier: (scoffs)
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: (stands) I think we can both agree, it can't go on like this.
Prince Rainier: Agreed.
Queen Katherine: Let's take this opportunity to talk frankly, with no kids, no Martin, no distractions. Lay our cards on the table about what needs to change to make this marriage work.
Tumblr media
Prince Rainier: Well, start! I'm used to going second.
Queen Katherine: If I am to go first -your attitude.
Prince Rainier: My attitude?
Queen Katherine: Yes. It's incessant.
Tumblr media
Prince Rainier: You try having other people tell you what to do and when to do it. What to say, and what not to say. It's humiliating!
Queen Katherine: (stern) As a matter of fact, I do! I have also learned more about humiliation in the past few weeks that I truly hoped I would in a lifetime. My government is failing, my family is failing, and my marriage is failing. What's worse, I've never felt more alone than I have in the past three months.
Tumblr media
Prince Rainier: Why do you think that is?
Queen Katherine: Because you are no support, Rainier. You have been lost in your role and your self for months. You've shut me out.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: Okay, I know this marriage has turned out to be far different than what we both imagined and that now we both find ourselves in a...
Prince Rainier: Prison.
Queen Katherine: ...unique situation. We have a marriage that's different than any others where as...
Prince Rainier: Divorce.
Queen Katherine: ...Yes. It isn't an option for us.
Tumblr media
Prince Rainier: You're right.
Queen Katherine: So, what do we do? I need you. Our family needs you. You need to leave the past there. What will it take?
Prince Rainier: All right. If you're truly asking. To make it bearable, to make it work... I'd need to feel valued. To feel respected.
Queen Katherine: You are!
Tumblr media
Prince Rainier: (stands) No! No, I'm not. None of those sims of your court, cabinet or even government respect me. Their snobbery and prejudice towards me ends. They consider me a foreigner because I'm from Brindleton Bay.
Queen Katherine: You haven't behaved like you've earned their respect!
Prince Rainier: No! I will earn their respect with the only thing that will shut them up and command their respect. My eight year old son out ranks me, and I don't want to hear the old "he's heir to the throne" rhetoric.

Richard Philemon [M.E.]: There was no impropriety whatsoever in my acquaintanceship with Miss Wilson. I shall not hesitate to issue writs for libel and slander if scandalous allegations are made or repeated outside the House.

Linwood Keller [P.M.]: Philemon just ended the Conservatives power in government. The House minority leader is starring him right in the face, knowing he's lying. Call the palace. I need an urgent audience with the queen!

Review: Charming by Jade Linwood.
Prince Jean-Marc Charming Arundel, known to friends and enemies alike as "Prince Charming," is handsome, well-mannered, brave, a peerless swordsman, a cunning tactician – and a liar, a con man and a fraud. For years he has been travelling from one kingdom to the next, rescuing endangered princesses and maidens, securing their troths and his place in their fathers' palaces, then looting their treasuries and having it away before dawn. Until a chance meeting of three of his victims – raven-haired Marie Blanche de Neige, the sorceress Doctor Emilia Rapunzel and the long-slumbering Bella Lucia dei’ Sogni – suggests a course of revenge...
You know reading this was like reading something crossed between Shrek and Cinderella Is Dead and I am not mad about it in the slightest.
I really enjoyed how this author writes her characters and moves the plot. It has a great energy and a real sense of humour that shines in this book in my opinion and made me in moments laugh to myself. The part where the princess wakes up and they're doing a 'Prince Check' and everything to me was so amusing and I never even thought of how time and society would pass between her going to sleep and her awakening. Brilliant.
I'm always gonna read books that are based in fairy tales, and I'm glad this was one I was able to request for on Netgalley. The characters are fleshed out and given in my opinion more life that what the cloud of pink the Disney Princesses are ever given and have great backstory given to them here. I just really had good vibes with this book and really enjoyed how the stories were woven into a more modern context that really works so well.
The story really does get going about a third way in to this book, granted however I didn't mind, I thought it was worth the wait as we get started on the story and it was really good. If you like fairy tales and you like well written characters given autonomy and fresh twists, Charming is certainly perfect for you.
(I received an ARC from Netgalley for honest review).

The McComas Institute, known as Mountain School was founded September 10, 1867. Located in Joppa, Maryland, the school was one of three Freedmen’s Bureau schools in Harford County.
It was named in honor of local abolitionist, George March McComas, he was an abolitionist, a prominent landowner, and a tobacco merchant who worked out of the port of Baltimore. He appealed to the Freedmen’s Bureau for funds to build a school and a church for African Americans not far from his home in Linwood, Maryland.
It was built on one acre of land purchased for $30. A “colored” couple, George and Mary Ann Johnson, sold one acre of land to Abraham Waters, Charles Waters, Peter Bishop, Joseph Henry, and John H. Butler “for the purposes of erecting or allowing to be erected thereon a schoolhouse for the use, benefit and education of the Colored People of Harford County.”
The Freedmen’s Bureau provided financial assistance for construction and it continued to provide financial support until the Bureau was abolished in 1872. The Harford County Board of School Commissioners assumed operations and partnered with the nearby congregation Mount Zion Methodist Church, which had provided the labor for the construction and held the title to the facility. Church members made up a significant portion of the Institute’s board of directors until the school closed in 1939. Afterwards, the building was used by Mount Zion to hold Sunday school classes and church and community events.
It was home to several pioneering Black educators in the state of Maryland, including Mrs. Alma Mae Dorsey Nelms. She served as the sole teacher at McComas Institute, instructing grades one through seven. Local civil rights activist and Harford County educator, Janice East Morehead Grant, a former student of Mrs. Nelms, noted that her teacher educated “78 students comprising 7 grades [after walking] miles in the cold, making fires in a potbellied stove, and carrying water for us to drink.”
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Building restoration projects began in 1983 and 1995, the building was finally restored. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

G5 - G6
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Buckingsim Palace, 11:12 AM WST]
(News anchor talking)
Cameron Dorly [SNN]: Well, the Bill is a long way from becoming Law, and with a Conservative-controlled House that is strongly against spellcasting, it has a long road ahead.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: (typing)
Tumblr media
(Martin enters)
Martin Lavelle [Private Secretary]: Members of the G5 have arrived, Your Majesty.
Queen Katherine: (typing) Where are they waiting?
Martin Lavelle [P.S.]: They are being escorted to the Southeast gardens, ma'am.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: How long is the reception, again?
Martin Lavelle [P.S.]: 45 minutes, ma'am. Would you like the time increased? Decreased?
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: No. That time is fine.
Martin Lavelle [P.S.]: Lady Delilah will be accompanying you.
Queen Katherine: Thank you, Martin. Oh! I'd like to have a lunch with the family.
Tumblr media
Martin Lavelle [P.S.]: The entire family, ma'am?
Queen Katherine: Yes. The Kents, Hastings, Boykins, and Queen Mother.
Tumblr media
Martin Lavelle [P.S.]: When were you thinking? Your dowry has availability next Tuesday for lunch, if I recall.
Queen Katherine: Yes, next Tuesday. This is not an optional lunch, Martin. Help them reschedule any royal engagements had that hour, and manage the communications needed.
Martin Lavelle [P.S.]: Yes, Your Majesty.

[Buckingsim Palace Southeast Gardens, 11:31 AM WST]
Linwood Keller [Prime Minister]: Welcome, Your Majesty. I'll introduce you to some of the other Sims world leaders. It will be imperative we continue to show we're a strong nation, especially after the last few days.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: (annoyed) I do know how to schmooze, Prime Minister.
Linwood Keller [P.M.]: Of course, Your Majesty.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: Madam President!
Paulina McNally [President]: (curtsy) Your Majesty. Always lovely to see you.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: Lara and Anthony had such a lovely time in Americreek. I must schedule a tour myself soon! I hear Chick-fil-a is all the rage there.
President McNally: (laughs) It is!
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: Ah, Prime Minister Trido! How lovely to see you! Thank you for attending my coronation. I trust you are keeping Oasis Springs running smoothly?
Jason Trido [P.M.]: (bowing) It was a beautiful coronation, Your Majesty! Yes. Running Oasis Springs is no small tall task. One I'm sure Linwood knows all too well running Windenburg.
Queen Katherine: Indeed!
Tumblr media
- - - - - LATER - - - - -
Tumblr media
Linwood Keller [P.M.]: News of South Marvania joining the, now, G6 has brought even more global attention to Windenburg. It has caused an internatiosim scandal the past two days!
Queen Katherine: What?
Linwood Keller [P.M.]: The government is preparing for a North Marvanian retaliatory response. President Mikhaul feels the G5 granting South Marvania admission, in the midst of HIS war with them, is us joining the war. They have increased their attacks on South Marvania the past week, and could strike any other G5 nation in retaliation.
Tumblr media
Queen Katherine: I... I didn't know.
Linwood Keller [P.M.]: (confused) Debriefs were included in your daily dispatch yesterday, Your Majesty. A cyber attack is highly expected!
Queen Katherine: Prime Minister, I can assure you...
Tumblr media
Lady Delilah: Excuse me, Your Majesty. Prime Minister. It's time for the group portrait.
Queen Katherine: Thank you, Delilah. (pause) I'd like to finish this conversation, Prime Minister. A cyber attack is not a threat we should take lightly. I'd like to know what the government, my government, has planned.
Linwood Keller [P.M.]: Absolutely, Your Majesty.

SHORT STORY: A Different Kind of Soldier by John Linwood Grant
SHORT STORY: A Different Kind of Soldier by John Linwood Grant
I learned of the amazing John Linwood Grant when I read the book A Study in Grey. I instantly fell in love with Major Redvers Blake and have been wishing and hoping I could read more about him. Well, Virginia, dreams really do come true… A Different Kind of Soldier Autumn bleeds in tawny shades, a suspicion of winter hiding under sodden foliage. And if I have an ‘autumnal’ character in my…

Strange Perfumes of a Polar Sun, by John Linwood Grant

“As I grew older, they brought me night-fevers of vast, deserted plateaus and winds which scoured flesh from bone; visions of drowned cities and forbidden peaks. They gave me hints that they themselves were real, material, and they fed me concepts of stone, in all its conceivable forms, starting my first poor attempts with chisel and file. They fed my isolation from other humans, strengthened it,…
