headlines sensationalise things guys. odds are she isn't being 'dropped' and 'replaced' like.. if she isn't coming back for anything in the s15 production then she was written out in s14. and therefore will have her character arc within that series. and yes it's a shame because they've reduced the series order to 8 eps rather than 10/12/13 as previously. but it's not as dramatic as the papers want you to think it is. she isn't being FIRED she's just only gonna be in one series. and single-series companions companions can absolutely work, look at bill, look at martha, donna, dan, or even liz or harry.

wait i have a nepo baby headcanon not a political one but more succession style. nepo baby!yn whose family owns the company that owns formula 1 (like bernie ecclestone but like not a terrible racist obvi) (or liberty media but obviously something else IDK)
so she’s been around it forever and she’s grown to have a reckless party girl image (partying with kendall jenner, lily rose depp, drug allegations you get it) but she’s actually v smart and on the board of f1 and is key in making decisions
she didn’t really start making decisions until her 20s when her family made her clean up her act and the dilfs are like wow i haven’t seen you in forever. last time i saw you you were sneaking out of a corporate dinner at your parents’ house 😉
and the current grid is like terrified of her. scared but turned on
(if you don’t like the dads best friend/age gap/‘known the reader since she was young but now she’s grown up and hot’ trope then you can change it to they know who she is but never interacted until she was like. 24 lol)
but since you said you were watching gilmore girls i do imagine a scene from that show but where there’s an F1 gathering at her parents’ house but she doesn’t know cos she doesn’t live there anymore but she does to her old room and finds like 3 drivers in there bc they’re pissed off at something happening downstairs. she opens the door and says can i come in? and the drivers are like well. it’s your room. (like in the episode rory’s birthday parties hahahah)
sorry this is so long LMAO 💘
WAIT THIS IS ACTUALLY SO FUN.
if i was to write it, i’d probably change the idea that she is publicly helping to run it because i don’t think that’s realistic. but maybe her dad or something is like ‘i want to do (insert idea)’ and yn overhears it while drinking a cocktail at 10am (because it’s six pm somewhere) and she’s like ‘shit idea, do (insert better idea)’ and the dad is like ‘no, as if i’m listening to my problematic ass daughter’. so he tells his advisors like ‘lmfaooo dumb idea right’ but they’re like ‘that actually works sm better. the original idea was your daughter’s one… right?’ and the dad is like ‘oh… yes!! lol!! exactly 😅’
idk why but logan comes to my head and he’s at yn’s family estate or something for a f1 related night and he’s like … fuck i need to hide somewhere for some fresh air and time alone. so he runs into a room and shuts the door behind him. he’s like phew!!! alone at last. only to hear a lighter switch and he sees reader in her room maybe smoking? maybe lighting something on fire to do it.
and he’s like … um who tf are you?? and she’s like ‘this is my room 🤨 who the fuck are you???’ and he’s like ‘um no it’s not. there are only two people who here. (yn’s dad’s name) and his daughter but she’s at boarding school’ and she’s like ‘by boarding school, they meant rehab and i’m back. i’ve been back for a while. i’m just not showing my face downstairs. i think dad’s relieved honestly.’ and then they start to chat - maybe about expectations placed on them by themselves and others? idk why i’m thinking this scenario. can be romantic or platonic up 2 you.
but i definitely think the dilfs knowing her growing up might be slightly weird for some readers so maybe, she’s just been sent from place to place for wild behaviour so they know she exists but they’ve never seen her - like u said!!

I was sick recently and clearly delirious from fever and not making good decisions because I watched a lot of Doctor Who (hadn't seen any since Ecclestone when I was at school in the 2000s 😨) and I became convinced Lily looks like Pearl Mackie who plays Bill in one of the Peter Capaldi series. Later when I actually compared them they weren't that similar I think it was mainly they both have quite a long face. Anyway the idea stuck and I ended up using that as some inspiration for her new save makeover.
She still needs a new identity, she used to be an entertainer townie but now that she's a played sim its time for a new direction.
(Fascinating post I know 👍)

Doctor Who: The Ultimate Speedrun Marathon - Series 1 (2005)
Eccleston as the 9th Doctor seems to be a big fan favorite, including among my Whovian friends, so I was especially excited to start his era. Needless to say, I was very impressed! This series really brought Doctor Who out of its ‘80s era funk and into the modern age, so its importance deserves the praise, which I’m about to give in truckloads.
Tumblr media
General Thoughts
Right out the gate, Christopher Eccleston was the perfect actor to take on the role! From what I’d heard of the 9th Doctor before watching this series, I assumed he’d be very serious, edgy, and overall just a grimdark take on Doctor Who. The early 2000s was ripe with franchises and reboots like that, so I was pleasantly surprised to see just how three-dimensional he was! I was mainly familiar with Eccleston from the 2010 TV movie Lennon Naked, which he was fucking awful in, so to see him so perfectly embody the Doctor gave me whiplash ngl. He does have darkness in him, which comes out in relation to his Time War PTSD and his hatred of the Daleks, but he’s also really lively and snarky in most moments. Such a great character all around! If Paul McGann makes you fall in love with the Doctor’s personality, Eccleston makes you understand it.
Tumblr media
I assume the tragic backstory 9 mentions throughout this series (regarding the Time War, the destruction of Gallifrey, and him being the last of the Time Lords) was a retcon made for this series in particular, since the 8th Doctor was on his way back to Gallifrey at the beginning of the ‘96 TV movie. Maybe he was just visiting the rubble idk. I could be wrong, but I include this just to mention that I assume lore retcons will probably be rampant from here forward, so I’m cool with that.
Tumblr media
Moving onto this Doctor’s companion, there’s a few. The main one we follow is 19 year old Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper. I was familiar with Piper as Brona/Lily in Penny Dreadful, which she was great in, so it was cool to see her again in a very different role. Rose starts out really wayward and flat, but over the course of the series and her adventures with the Doctor, she grows more involved with the world and becomes happier as a person. It’s a cool development that really cuts to the core of what the Doctor represents as a traveler and explorer of all things exciting and hopeful. Dr. Grace Holloway gives her a run for her money as my favorite companion so far, but Rose is really interesting and overall just a great human protagonist for us to tag along with.
Tumblr media
Along with her, there’s also Mickey (Ricky?) Smith, played by Noel Clarke, and Captain Jack Harkness, played by John Barrowman. With Mickey, I assumed he’d just be a throwaway character, as a teenage boyfriend Rose leaves behind for good to move onto greater things, but he comes back again and again, with a lot of development that really surprised me! He grows from a pretty flat and lame guy into a character with a lot of agency and intelligence. His angst over Rose leaving him for time/space adventures was also really sad :( I felt bad for him honestly, but he grows beyond his need for Rose and comes into his own right
Tumblr media
Captain Jack was really fun too. Reminded me a lot of Firefly. I expected him to be one-off character too, but he sticks around and is really fun to follow. It’s cool to have another snarky space/time adventurer around for a little bit. He’s also a bi king so that’s dope as fuck
Tumblr media
Back to the 9th Doctor himself, I really liked the parallels drawn between him and the Daleks. This might just be a coincidence, but I think the interior walls of his TARDIS look a lot like the outer shell of the Daleks. Just thought that was a cool detail.
Tumblr media
Speaking of his TARDIS in general, the more industrial look contrasts with the 7th & 8th Doctor’s warm homely TARDIS. The spindly concrete pillars and the shiny metal walls/floor are really striking. It’s like a modern-art exhibit. It’s both very 2000s and very classic looking.
Tumblr media
Favorite Episodes
Aliens of London
World War 3
The Empty Child
The Doctor Dances
Dalek
The End of The World
Favorite Moments
“You would make a good Dalek”….. omg chills
Rose being there for her father’s death was really sad and moving. That whole episode was great, but that last moment was especially effective
“Kill yourself.” lol
Charles Dickens having his own sort of Scrooge-esque arc was really nice. A bit sad knowing that he would die a year after the episode is set, but still bittersweet and nice.
The Doctor’s joy after realizing everyone finally gets to walk away okay in episode 10 was great! It’s an amazingly emotional moment for someone who’s gone through so much loss and grief, and Eccleston plays it perfectly. Everyone lives!!!
Rose getting super glowy TARDIS powers was cool as hell for her development into a hero in her own right, as well as being dope as fuck overall. I’m gonna assume/headcanon that the “Heart of the TARDIS” that appears in the finale is the same as the Eye of Harmony that appears in the TV movie.
That final regeneration scene… So cool! I’ll miss Eccleston, but he made the most of his time as the 9th Doctor. The way David Tennant also makes his appearance uniquely his was super funny. Just kinda commenting on his new teeth and then shrugging it off.
Alright, that’s it for Series 1, as well as the end of Eccleston’s run as the 9th Doctor. It was a fun ride and an amazing start to this fresh new beginning to the franchise, but I suppose it’s time to move on with him. Now, onto Series 2, with David Tennant taking over as the 10th Doctor.

Money still talks and loads of it speaks loudly, doesn't it Bernie?
By Stanley Collymore
Too rich to do jail time! That is the obvious verdict of HMRC and too the British judiciary on Bernie Ecclestone! As self-evidently to both these entrenched stalwarts of the powerful British Administration if you've loads of dosh, and very unlike the common man or woman, simply in distinctively literally self-evidently rather endemically entrenched, also similarly equally clearly and literally obsessively mercenary, discernibly, truly undeniably, really class ridden Britain, then automatically, you are societally above the law obviously; as poor people, very automatically get put in prison, for just screwing   the system even if the stated sum of money involved, as it usually is, consists undoubtedly of a literally irrefutably pathetically paltry sum like, for example, rather obviously and very crucially not paying your clearly statutory, BBC licence fee.
Quite honestly, if an ordinary bloke or woman had actually blatantly very advantageously for them essentially stolen, effectively over £600 million Pounds Sterling and regrettably for them subsequently to that theft of theirs actually got found out and was distinctively, clearly publicly exposed for what they'd done there's crucially no obvious requirement, to basically seriously question yourself really as to what their punishment, would be.
Being 93 years old shouldn't exclude an arrogant and very self-entitled financial, or any other criminal exploiter for that matter, from obviously serving serious jail time. And obviously in Bernie Ecclestone's case he actually has been corrupt for decades. So truly what if he was to spend his final days behind bars; where simply he fittingly belongs. As all of us mere mortals in the real world damn well would have to do. Fulfilling the apt maxim that if you don't wish to accept prison time then don't consciously do the crime!
(C) Stanley V. Collymore 12 October 2023.
Author's Remarks: Boris Becker did far less than what Bernie Ecclestone has continuously and arrogantly done for decades but got a prison sentence all the same. Both white men obviously; but Boris has a Black female partner and a mixed race, Black daughter by quite evidently his former Black wife. Self-evidently all those at the HMRC and the judges who clearly, unquestionably were involved in Bernie Ecclestone's criminal case, the bloody lot of them and societally of the same mind set are lily white. Something which the bosses at the HMRC and the judiciary do actually empathize with as they're all of them thoroughly endowed with self-evidently the irrefutably same white supremacist mentality. Therefore, empathy with Bernie Ecclestone simply came naturally! Simples! Lol. Except that it's not funny really.

O'er the fresh, sweet meadows where the grass is springing, Through the budding forests where the birds are singing, Up the hill and down the glade Life is just beginning.
Through the crowded city fragrant winds are straying, By the dusty highway laughing brooks are playing; Youth is having holiday Life has gone a-Maying.
See the tender saplings, shining rain-drops shaking, Where the wild-wood lilies from their dreams are waking; See the old world, young once more, Winter's sloth forsaking.
Down in windy valleys daisies still lie sleeping, Tho' in sheltered woodlands violets are peeping; Spring has gathered all the land To her kindest keeping.

Welcome!
Hello there!
Tumblr media
My name’s Lily (she/her), AKA DemDifferentStories on Archive of Our Own and Wattpad (formerly). I am a fanfiction writer and reader, and I hope to expand my audience a bit more by revamping this old blog that’s been lying dormant for a few years now.
Here’s a few basic facts about myself:
I’m Irish-Australian, born and raised in Australia.
I am a movie buff with a love for horror films particularly, and a bookworm with a love for thrillers. My favourite film is Spider-Man (2002) and my favourite book is The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.
I love music, especially rock and metal. My favourite band is Muse. This year, I’ve found myself falling in love with Coldplay and The Cranberries, courtesy of my best mate.
I am a massive cat lover (and dogs too, but cats inspire an unmatched joy within me).
I am a massive David Tennant fan and have seen quite a chunk of his work! I also love Christopher Eccleston and Cillian Murphy, and I have plenty of other faves that I won’t bore you with a list of.
I’m currently a university student and work two jobs, so I am, unfortunately, a busy gal.
This is a rough timeline of my fanfiction journey:
I started reading fanfiction around 2013/2014 and started writing it shortly after.
I read a little on fanfiction.com before moving onto reading/writing on Wattpad in 2014 and then AO3 in 2020.
Initially, I wrote fanfiction about bands/musical artists (5 Seconds of Summer, Of Mice & Men, Bring Me The Horizon, You Me At Six, and Asking Alexandria were my primary subjects), but majority of them have been lost/deleted/archived as I no longer feel comfortable with the ethics/morals of writing about real people, and the writing (both quality and plot wise) was... quite bad. But, there are still a handful available on Wattpad and AO3 if your curiosity is piqued.
Currently, I primarily write Doctor Who (2005) fanfiction revolving around the Tenth Doctor, the Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler, and their respective ships. I write an array of things - different ratings/contents, canon divergence/expansion, original ideas, AUs.
However, I have tons of drafts non-DW and I intend to post them when the inspiration sparks!
My Wattpad account has not been active since 2021, but it is still available to see/read - I just don’t check my inbox/receive notifications! So please don’t leave any messages there.
I feel this is a relatively satisfactory introductory post, and I hope this tells you a bit more about me. If you’d like to read some of my stuff, jump through the link in my bio, and let me know what you think!
Lots of love,
Lily/DemDifferentStories.

So listen I know JK Rowling is an absolute dry cunt, and I know that Harry Potter is problematic as fuck but I've been sitting on these theories for a few years now hoping that JK would pull her head out of her ass and she isn't so I'm sharing. If you don't like that fuck off!
This is my hate blog, I have THOUGHTS about Harry Potter and I WILL SHARE THEM. It's not my fault JK Rowling is an infected boil on the ass of humanity.
Okay so the thoughts.
SNAPE was from the North right...like he's quite obviously from a depressed mill town in the North of England, which means his accent would've been northern (if you don't know what that is think Chris Eccleston's Doctor from Doctor Who). Also since Harry's mum and Snape were friends as kids she too would've had a northern accent, and fucking Petunia.
This was a very poor depressed area of England, very working class, and then mills started shutting down in the 60s and 70s meaning a lot of poverty. This is the area of England that birthed the Punk counterculture and the anarchy that came with it.
Also we see from the brief glimpses of Snape's childhood that JK gives us some of this poverty and the trauma and abuse it birthed.
So like realistically Snape could've been a punk!
Also, this opens the mind to the possibility that the reason Lily never viewed Snape as a romantic interest is because he was poor and she, just like her sister, was looking to move up the class ladder a bit which is why she landed on rich boy Potter.
And Potter WAS the rich boy, for American's think of the preppy Lacross captain at your local private school. Just old fucking money and idealism all wrapped up in one douche-tastic package.
Which makes me think like why is he so hell bent on "equal right's" like what do Potter and their wealthy ilk understand of poverty and inequality. Like they're so totally the fake "woke" ass hats right.
So here's the thing.
JK Rowling was poor, but she didn't see herself as a working class person, she saw herself as upper class which means that in her story the rich people are the heroes!
Snape is a poor man, he goes from poverty stricken childhood to educated working class adult (teachers are working class) and he has to have a whole fucked up redemption arc that doesn't really absolve him of his abusiveness.
The Weasleys are the only truly poor people in the story and you get the sense that they're poor simply because Arthur's preferred profession is undervalued and also something that feels vaguely akin to anti Celtic and/or Catholic sterotyping but I can't be sure because I'm American and don't really understand the prejudices or lack their of against red-heads.
anyway someone else can be more thoughtful I'm just rambling but basically I think JK Rowling is a class traitor and a fucking cunt and she wanted to be rich and that fact is VERY apparent from the way she treated the classes in her books. Like she TRIES to make the rich all evil but she can't do it... look at the empathy she builds for the Malfoy's (actually rich) vs the absolute lack there of for Voldemort (born poor).
and this is why you shouldn't just stop reading shit because it's problematic because conversations about class, the aspirations of the author, and it's affect on literature are important to have and we need to dig into this shit and discuss it.
P.S. how cool would it have been if Richard Armitage (who's actually from the North and actually Snape's age) had played Snape...and also what if JK Rowling had written Snape as a punk...that'd have been so cool.

Halloweekend Movie Recs
Tumblr media
I’ve been having really interesting conversations with my friends when I take them to the cemetery for socially distanced Goth Walks. Particularly, I love learning everyone’s personal definition of what, to them, constitutes “a horror film.” It can vary so so much!
I have yet to arrive at an answer to the horror question for myself, but I do know that there are certain movies I associate with the month of October. Many I would not call horror, some I would, but what they all have in common is that I look at them and think “that’s a Halloween watch.”
This year I thought I’d put a bunch of these together—24 of them in fact, grouped into loose categories—for those whose tastes, like mine, tends to skew more atmospheric than slasher, and are looking for something to watch this Halloweekend.
🦇
More Style Than Scares
Movies that I suspect most would not classify as horror, but maybe somewhere sort of adjacent to it—somewhere styled to all hell.
The Double (2013)
This theatrical little Dostoevsky adaption is the one in this category I would most push for actually being classed as a horror film, due to the dark tension of the plot and how it’s scored with straight-up horror movie violins. But, it rarely shows up under that genre marker, so there you go! Anyway I love this movie. It’s shot in vivid chiaroscuro with colored light and pitch black shadows, and has a philosophical drollness I’ve described before as somewhere between Samuel Beckett and Terry Gilliam. Richard Ayoade please direct more movies!
Tags: tension, dark comedy, supernatural
A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014)
Ana Lily Amirpour’s Iranian ghost town vampire western delivers and then some. Reeeally good atmosphere, quiet and lovely and cool and feeling. The lead’s giant dark eyes are like their own special effect. In aesthetic and attitude it could maybe be described as a younger, more yearning Only Lovers Left Alive, which really could have been on this list as well but instead I’m just mentioning it in the copy.
Tags: spare & quiet, vampires, female lead
Thoroughbreds (2017)
I gotta take every chance I get to recommend Thoroughbreds, as I’ve been mystified for two years by how Tumblr didn’t eat up the sardonic sapphic murdergirls movie with a SPOON. It’s nervy and stylish and great fun, sort of like a Secret History of two, only they were both kicked out of their Connecticut prep schools and prefer Classic Hollywood to the Classics. I really think you’ll like it.
Tags: murder, dark comedy, female lead
The Lighthouse (2019)
“Is The Lighthouse a horror movie?” is the question I’ve mulled over with everyone in the Horror Conversations. It’s been so interesting: seemingly none of us were overly frightened by it, so had been inclined to say no, but then once we thought about it, began to be more inclined to say yes. There are certainly unworldly elements---the horror of something beyond human comprehension being a key feature of the genre for one of my theater director friends---and there’s also plenty of heightened emotions and ominous portents and raging storms. There are even strong arguments that could be made about it being a kind of vampire story, or even a kind of ghost story—the latter aided by the unreliability of our main character. ALL of these things are big ol’ classic horror tropes, plus, the boys are wearing cozy sweaters, so that’s it decided: The Lighthouse is absolutely an October movie.
Tags: tension, supernatural
🦇
Genuinely Unnerving
Now these are definitely gonna show up in the horror section of the haunted Blockbuster, but, I am very particular about what I like in this genre. Gore and jump-scares I cannot do, but spookiness and ambience? That’s my jam. That’s these.
Shallow Grave (1994)
Shallow Grave is Danny Boyle’s first feature, and by my lights, easily the best thing he’s ever done sorry Danny. It stars Ewan McGregor in his first feature as well, a lovely Australian actor named Kerry Fox, and baby Christopher Eccleston. The premise is basically what if Ferris, Sloan, and Cameron were young professionals who lived in a big New Town flat in Edinburgh, and it was actually a psychological thriller this time, instead of just always skirting one. This is one of my favorite movies, full stop.
Tags: tension, murder
Under the Skin (2013)
Yes this the movie where an alien in the guise of brunette Scarlett Johansson drives around Glasglow picking up men to take to a secret location and dissolve into blackness, but it’s more than that, becoming very much about the ideas of both preying and being preyed upon. There is very little dialogue, which is why the score by Mica Levi both stands out so much and is so impressive for the amount of storytelling it accomplishes. Honestly this movie disquieted me in a big way, but I still think about it, in a good way.

Don’t Look Now (1973)
HAUNTED VENICE. HAUNTED VENICE. It’s gloomy and watery and cold and everything is in ‘70s browns the color of dead leaves and dusty icons in the quiet, empty cathedrals, except for the flash of a small red raincoat that Donald Sutherland keeps seeing, and the pale blind blue eyes of an elderly psychic & her sister that Julie Christie is becoming entangled with. Influenced nearly too many directors to count, but perhaps its most direct homage (‘or pastiche, or a nod of the head’) is 2008’s In Bruges.

The Witch (2015)
You’re on Tumblr, you already know about The VVitch, Robert Eggers’s second entry on this list. But you may be afraid that you live too fearfully to live deliciously. I understand. I felt the same way. But a friend of mine, who knows I am a scaredy-cat, told me I’d actually be fine with this one, and guess what: she was right. It’s a little hard to explain, but the frightening aspects of this movie were presented in such a way that they didn’t completely subsume my attention, just enhanced it. I imagine this might be how people who actually like scary movies feel about them. Anyway, I like this one!

Creature Features
One sub-category of horror that I’ve found does not scare me to the point of no longer being able to enjoy it is the one with BEASTIES, frequently also comedies and always featuring big bold practical effects, the blood colored with the same red-40 sheen of the Jolly Ranchers you’re eating out of a plastic pumpkin.
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
The ultimate werewolf classic. Funny and mesmerizing, the colors so intensely 1980 it will take you out of now entirely. Come for the legendary, game-changing prosthetics & makeup work, stay for the puffy parkas. You know the song ‘Werewolves of London’, a classic and a banger maybe one of the five actually good Halloween songs? Well I don’t know if it’s actually related to this movie, but, it is. Spiritually.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
The only musical on this list, which was not intentional, but if it had been, this still would have been what I picked for the musical slot in a heartbeat! This is the story of a bloodthirsty plant deviling a flower shop, and it is quirky and kinky and sweet and salty. I have never seen a Muppets thing, but the feeling I get when I look at the production style of this movie is what I imagine loving the Muppets would feel like. Try to watch the version with the original director’s cut ending if you can!

Ginger Snaps (2000)
This is a schlocky Canadian monster movie by a female screenwriter where one night in early October the elder of two morbid outcast teenage sisters gets her first period and then immediately gets bitten by a werewolf, and that is ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW. Well also content warning for talk of suicide and suicidal imagery, and also lots of corn syrup blood and snarling.

The Thing (1982)
The Thing is actually a classic whodunit masquerading as an Antarctic creature feature and I love it. A locked-house Christie Mystery where the question is WHOM is secretly a fantastically gross alien facsimile. Platinum-level dog acting by this husky! Extraordinarily gloppy animatronics! A creepy thriller but fun about it, just big levels of snow and suspicion and Kurt Russell’s hair. Will make you jazzed for winter to come! [This statement has not been verified]

Jewel Box Gothic
I’m pretty proud of this category: these are all gothic romances in rich jewel-tone colors. A genre unto itself!
Crimson Peak (2015)
This is another one you definitely already know about, but if nothing else will set the tone for this category: Crimson Peak, the movie I’ve seen described as two Pre-Raphaelite paintings in a battle of wills in a haunted Victorian mansion. The china! The butterflies! The red mud! I haven’t actually seen this one since I saw it theaters in New York, but at that time I was twice so overcome by excitement that I punched the arm of the boy I’d gone to see it with, a whole 200% more often than I traditionally punch boys while watching movies. High praise!

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Dracula is like Crimson Peak’s even more goth older sister. This movie is absolutely unhinged, and MAGNIFICENT. The costumes are by the woman who did the costumes for The Fall, and the direction is by Francis Ford fucking Coppola, somehow. At one point Gary Oldman does chortle the line “Oh I never drink….wine.” This is a movie that understands that that line is awesome, that midcentury-style practical effects rule, and that Peak Romance is arranging for your beloved to safely pet a very soft and very fangy wild animal.

Suspiria (1977)
Alright maybe less on the romance aspect with this one, but very gothic. This is the original Dario Argento Italian gaillo film that Luca Guadagnino riffed on recently, a movie waaayyy too scary for me, oh my god I regretted it... But the splashy, ornate ‘70s Suspiria I actually really enjoyed. It is gory but in a totally unreal, fuchsia-tinged way that I can handle. Plus every scene is basically lit through a bi pride flag, and the score is by a prog rock band called Goblin---there’s just a lot going on here.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989)
This is a very shall we say intense movie, but I have seen it multiple times, because one of the things it is so intensely is aesthetic, in a way that makes my brain yell! Aaah! It’s the kind of movie where when characters walk from one room into another room the score and colors DRAMATICALLY CHANGE. Listen, a lot of bad things happen to young Helen Mirren in this movie, but I’m just going to tell you: she’s gonna get hers. This movie was a huge influence on Bryan Fuller when he was making his Hannibal series and it shoowws.

Black & White Frights
Vintage delights for your spooky nights.
Nosferatu (1922), and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)
We didn’t really know how to make movies yet in the 1920s, and what we ended up with were slow as treacle but/and, especially in the case of the German Expressionists, wonderfully strange. Come for the incredible imagery, stay also for the incredible imagery—there’s no recorded sound, after all.

The Innocents (1961)
With a script cowritten by Truman Capote, The Innocents is an adaptation of a play of the same name, itself adapted from Henry James’s famously eerie ghost story, The Turn of the Screw. To me the film felt perhaps a bit less ambiguous than the original Victorian piece, but there was still something slippery about it. Despite the two layers of remove, it is quite faithful to the novella, and also QUITE SPOOKY.

Rebecca (1940)
My Rebecca story is that I spent the whole time I was reading the Daphne Du Maurier novel thinking that the Narrator/the ghost of Rebecca was the scandalous lesbian subtext, only to be later surprised that it was actually supposed to be Mrs. Danvers/Rebecca. What can I say, [slaps roof of Manderley] you can fit so many gay vibes in here! Anyway this is Alfred Hitchcock’s only Best Picture winner, and that was not a miscarriage of justice.

Characters I like AKA ‘hurt face’ master post
The characters I like in movies and books are distinctly different. With books, I have all sorts of favorite characters, and I love that I know what they’re thinking. I just love a good deep third or first person.
In contrast to books, there’s just something different about movies. We’re watching actors, and the visual component really dictates how I interact with film. I can get over a bad storyline if the emotional journey I’m watching looks real.
When I’m watching a movie, I will almost always fall for lonely characters played by actors who can clearly express pain and sadness. Bonus points for guilt, insecurity, and a history of rejection. I will like them even if they’re not likable, or kind, or nice, or even good. They are visually compelling. Of course, I’ll love them even more if the backstory actually backs up why they’re in pain, and gives me a reason I shouldn’t dislike them beyond “they emote so pretty.” Experience with high school theatre productions has taught me there’s so much more to anger than volume, and so much more to sadness than tears; I’m in awe of actors who can communicate those emotions with subtlety and/or clarity.
So in real life, most of us aren’t that good at communicating with our faces, are we? For me, anyways, it’s hard to distinguish between tired, angry, or annoyed. When someone’s in pain or hurting, they rarely just look sad. Life’s not like a movie, when a good actor can show you exactly how a character feels without saying anything at all. I’m not so good at telling what people are thinking and often assume that that people are mad (and that they’re mad at me), when in reality I think pain must be more common. Most peole think of actors as imitating real people. I think they have to do more: they have to be expressive, and yet have it come off as genuine, so that we don’t even see the face but the character.
I only just figured out why it was that when Frozen came out, I was obsessed with it. The story itself leaves a lot to be desired, but I was willing to excuse that. My phone was full of pictures of Elsa,  but most of them were stills from the movie rather than fan art. I had pictures of almost every face Elsa makes in Let it Go, when she just looks exhilarated and like she can’t believe how happy she feels. I also had every frame from when she hugs frozen Anna (pictured below). It was the first time I’d really seen an animated character visibly express insecurity, loneliness, self-rejection, guilt, and anxiety.*
This whole “visibly expressing negative emotions” thing is also one of the main why I’m obsessed with the first four seasons of Doctor Who. The Time War plot checks off every box, and Eccleston and Tennant are just brilliant about letting that emotion show through.
Same thing goes for musical theatre. With cast recordings, the best is when you can just hear everything they’re saying in the way they sing things. Pretty Funny from Dogfight (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64-HBOsY50s) is just brilliant. Some other favorites: Track Down This Murder/Down Once More from Phantom, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables (see: all of Les Miserables, actually), I’m Not That Girl as well as its reprise and No Good Deed from Wicked, Satisfied and Burn from Hamilton**
There are these characters who are...awful. They have objectively done awful things. I don’t think their actions are excusable. Yet the visual part of my just loves to watch them because they’re in pain and it’s written all over their face. (Loki and Kylo Ren fall into this category for me). I want to make all of these excuses for them, and am not repulsed, and spend all of this time analyzing them because what the actors can do with their faces just sucks me in.
Now that I think about it, this is probably why I hate Elijah Wood’s performance of Frodo. The boy had exactly four faces: happy, sad, sick, and demented
A warning: this is a rough collection of GIFs that don’t all match in shape and format.

Rose.
In the most loving way possible, David Tennant as the 10th Doctor is rather melodramatic and constantly aggrieved, so I’m going to leave it at these two scenes even though I could probably mine a gifset from almost every episode he appears in post-Rose.

I actually didn’t care one way or the other for Alan Rickman’s Snape until this scene. After watching that, I was moved and reevaluated my whole take on the character. I don’t personally see Snape’s relationship with Lily as romantic like I once did, but I don’t think I would have gone back and evaluated the character as deeply as I did without first watching Rickman in that scene. I’m now firmly in the Snapedom.

Samantha Barks was amazing to watch and hear.

Anne Hathaway was phenomenal.
Les Mis was actually really hard to watch in movie theatres because there were so many closeups of the actors’ faces during intense emotional moments. It was a little overwhelming.

Pearl Mackie is a gift.
Some concluding observations:
This is a very white list. It was also feeling pretty male until I added Doctor Who companions and musicals.
This was harder than I was expecting, emotionally. Here’s some more Bill Potts to lighten things up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*Actually, one of the reasons I couldn’t stand Anna is because she comes off as completely ignorant when Elsa’s every expression is plainly written all over her face, even though narratively she has every reason to be in the dark. If Elsa wore the regular, confusing expressions most of us wear, Anna wouldn’t come off as so silly. (Also if she would stop talking for a few seconds and listen). If Elsa’s animations weren't so expressive, I probably would cut Anna a lot more slack naturally **After I had the privilege of seeing Hamilton, Quiet Uptown joins this list possibly the best bit of acting I have ever seen without a single word being said. You can’t completely hear it in the recordings, but Eliza’s face goes through about 50 emotions without even opening her mouth moving, and I was sobbing as I watched.
