Seeing this post always immediately reminds me of a fun story from early on in my relationship that my partner and I affectionately refer to as
The Can Opener Incident
This was back in my college days. That semester I was living in a dorm that was more like a collection of small apartments on the very fringes of campus territory. My partner had come over to spend the night at my dormroom, and we were going about making some pasta in the little kitchenette. The pasta was already fully cooked and strained when we suddenly encountered a problem:
The canned pasta sauce I had bought was not a pop top, and rummaging around the kitchen for a can opener revealed that I had neglected to bring one.
Not one to settle for miserable, dry pasta on a cozy home date, I ran over to the dorm room next door and asked to borrow a can opener. They're a little startled to find someone knocking on their door at 9 PM, but they let me borrow it with no resistance. Upon bringing it back is when the problems truly began.
You see, all of my life I had used a can opener which you latched to the side of the can and twisted the knob to make the sharp ring cut into the top of the can vertically, parallel to the side of the can. This one looked similar, all the right parts were in the right places, so I gave it a shot... but nothing happened. My partner comes up and tells me I'm using it wrong, and I think to myself "oh, okay, so maybe he's used this kind of can opener before, I'll let him at it," and I hand it off to him.
The can opener my partner has used his whole life is the kind that you latch on to the TOP of the can, so instead of holding the handle at the side, you're holding it horizontally over the top of the can. I didn't know that kind of can opener even existed, so when he tried using this one his way, I looked at him like he was insane. This look quickly intensified as this method also didn't work. Things rapidly went downhill from there. He defensively explained the way his can opener at home worked, and I started pointing to the structure of the can opener and arguing why this one wouldn't work that way. We're a little frustrated, but it's nothing some pasta can't fix, so I propose I simply go over next door to the people who I borrowed the can opener from and ask them how to use it.
As I reached over to take it from him, he held it out of my reach.
"No! I'll figure it out myself!" He announced.
"What? Why? It's easier to just ask the owner," I argue, jumping around trying to get at the items.
"Because I can figure it out!"
Okay. Fine. I guess he wants to solve this like some kind of puzzle for enrichment. I give up and I wait. The fiddling begins. I'm standing there watching him try increasingly improbable methods of getting that thing to work over and over. The pasta is getting cold. He's testing methods that have already proven not to work, trying new methods that physically couldn't work, then trying the ones that have already failed us all over again. My stomach growls.
"We should really just ask," I grumble, hungry and frustrated.
"No, I've got this."
He does not fucking got this. I want my goddamn food and I do not have time for this puzzle solving.
"Give it here."
"No."
"I'm just gonna take it to the owners and ask them to show us how to use it, you can come with."
"No! I want to figure out out myself!!"
"And I want my food god fucking damn it!!"
This went on for a bit. The pasta was drying to the side of the pot and getting crusty. At some point during this yelling match I got so pissed off that I stormed out of my own apartment into the cold with no coat on.
'I need to make him see reason!' I thought to myself, making my way through the snow. One building over was where two of his friends were rooming together. I knock on their door, boiling with rage. It is 10 PM.
"Hey, can you come over? [Partner] is being completely unreasonable and obstinate over figuring out how a can opener we borrowed works and won't let me take it to the owner to ask. Please help me convince him to hand it over, I'm literally too short to wrestle it from him."
"Alright, let me grab my coat."
We head back over to my place to find my partner Still Messing Around with that godforsaken can opener.
"Let me see that for a second," says his friend, taking his coat off. I experienced a moment of relief, thinking to myself, 'Finally!' as my partner pouted for a second, but relinquished the can opener.
This peaceful glorious relief fizzled out into horror as his friend began to try to open the can the same way I had.
"That's weird. It really looks like it should work this way..." he mutters.
"Try it from the top, that's how my parents' works," my partner suggests.
"No no, that won't work, just give me a second to figure it out."
Oh my fucking god.
I stared blankly, watching them study the can opener and turn the can this way and that, both completely absorbed in finding the solution to this hour long problem. I was going to lose my fucking mind. Perhaps in that moment I really did. Shellshocked, I stood, wondering how it had come to this. I just wanted some fucking pasta and a relaxed night in, and instead I've gotten these goddamn STEM majors milling around in my kitchen at 10:25 PM arguing over how to use a can opener that isn't even mine. So I went and did what, in retrospect, I should have done ages ago: I went next door for help.
I can't imagine what my neighbor must have thought of me, showing up over an hour after borrowing their can opener, looking as if something inside of me had died, and, with a hint of desperation in my eyes, begging them tearfully to come next door and show us all how to use their can opener. Over an hour after borrowing it.
Well, whatever they thought of it all, they did oblige my pleas. Their arrival thankfully broke up the debate, and as all three of us watched intently as hawks over their shoulder, they cracked open that can of pasta for us.
Using it the exact same way I had tried at the start of it all.
It was just dull.
"I don't need a shopping list; with effort, I will remember that I need this item"
Okay but will you be able to remember that you already bought it? Because apparently I can't.
#to this day my partner and I still can't agree on who was right in this situation when it gets brought up#“would have figured it out eventually!”#“my method was correct in the first place and asking the owner got us the answer faster!”#“i would have gotten it faster if you hadn't been preventing me by trying to take it!”#“the pasta was getting nasty we didn't have time for that!”#The Can Opener Incident#truly is the only thing to call that clusterfuck#i suppose it's only tangentially related to the post#but this post does always give me war flashbacks to this event#still can't believe his friend came over to help only to become a part of the problem immediately#should have just gone straight to the owner

right. So I'm kinda insane and found another song to talk about in some life series / evo context: Copycat. (Song will be linked at the end of the post!)
So, many people headcanon Jimmy and Grian being brothers- and it makes a lot of sense. They're both dirty brown haired, have dark brown eyes, are British, bird coded, have warring personalities, and actually are associated both with yellow, and then one other primary color- Grian taking red, and Jimmy taking blue. Even their main colorations show a kind of "parallel difference" between them, with recently, Grian being associated with red and purple, and Jimmy with blue and yellow.
Now. Recently Jimmy did some lore of him praying to the Watchers. And back in Evo, Grian was taken into the Watchers ranks- so there is some repeated or rhyming elements in their arcs. However, I raise you this- Jimmy is Grian's "replacement", or basically, a backup for if he defects from the Watchers. That's why he has such a deference to them- its hard coded into him. That's why he's acknowledged them so much recently, because Grian's slowly leaving, and they're beginning to get Jimmy to replace him.
For a long time, those two have had a sibling dyanmic- Grian, the older, stronger, and smarter brother, and Jimmy, the younger, weaker, stupider sibling. Grian basically torments Jimmy for his own amusement, and the Watchers let it happen- if Grian ever defected, they could simply feed Jimmy praise -you're better than Grian ever could have been, hes weak and you're incredibly strong, of course we will listen to you- and he would instantly be completely loyal to them.
The song has a few choice lyrics I'd like to point out:
"We get along just fine!" "I say everything you like to hear..." "It's funny how much I feel like I'm looking in a mirror!"
Say "Hello! What's up with you?" "I'm starting to talk like you do..."
"We've grown apart this time, I can't figure out the reason why." "It's funny how much I'd kinda like to see you cry."
"I've become what you like! I am what you wanted, right? Sacrificed all that I know, I have taught myself to let go!"
In any case, the main motif of the song is losing your identity- and that's exactly what's happening to Jimmy, memories of servers being scrubbed as the Watchers prepare him to take over Grian's position. The whole chorus is Jimmy giving in to the Watchers, and thinking about Grian in anger- he pushed him too far, yes, of course- the perfect way to get back at him, to team up with the eldritch gods Grian hates. Grian said he should be stronger- well now look at him! He's one of the strongest beings alive! He is now what his brother wanted him to be, perfectly made in his image.
Oh, and in case you need further convincing, look at how Grian's wings are usually portrayed. Scarlet macaw- red, blue, and yellow. Now look at Jimmy's wings- nearly always yellow, but in Wild Life, he's become a parrot. His wings are blue and yellow now. I bet he sometimes sees little red feathers and rips them out, desperate to distance himself from Grian- unfortunately, his brother.
Meanwhile, Grian doesn't know what's up with his little brother, and is desperately trying to get him back, to prevent him from making the same bad decisions he did- maybe even losing some of his Watcher powers as Jimmy's power begins to eclipse his own.
Link+ a lil more below the cut. This post is too long already. Whoops
youtube
Okay I can perfectly see in the "Copy that copy cat!" bit in the chorus, different sprites show up with every beat. The first four are of Grian (followed by a short animation of him saying the line) hitting poses, with maybe each sprite having a little refrence to a different season or series they have been in together. And then it swaps to Jimmy, facing towards him, hitting the same poses, with matching refrences. However by the end of the song, Jimmy takes charge, doing the poses first and surrounded by eyes- and Grian, trying (and failing) to match the poses and control the eyes, confused why he's lost his power.
Give my boy Jimmy the power. Grian has tormented him far too long.

2x07, part 1.
in a parallel universe Jinx and Ecco are TWINS??? Or was it just an expression? (Upd: probably just an expression, otherwise people would be screaming bloody murder about incest rn, lmao) Also, it's SO weird seeing this average Jinx and still hearing her cracked voice. Her mouth opens, but it doesn't match the tone of this Jinx.
And, damn, the spoilers were right. My girl deserves SO much better.
Hey, if all those people are alive, then Silco should be, too. WHERE IS MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER, SHOW HIM TO ME.
I think I'd love her in every universe.
Hey, does that mean Vi is either dead or insane? They can't be ALL 'normal' here?
???? If Silco isn't here, alive and well, I SWEAR TO THE FUCKING OUTSIDER.
??? Silco's place for her? Where. Is. Silco?
Ah huh! I was right. Love the "if Vi is alive, Powder turns to Jinx" allegory. And, basically, everything goes to shit. I'm afraid Silco might also be dead.
So Jayce needed to land there and Viktor wouldn't lost his humanity. Alas.
And if you love the journey More than the end, Go ahead <...> And where the chipps fall Is not your concern
I see you, Arcane. I see what you did there.
But of course, family is forever and all of that. Meh. At least in some universe she did die.
However, the idea that one of the sisters can't live in the world where another is alive/well/sane. The world is too small for the two of them at the same time.
Yeah, that's why Jayce's going to fuck it all up for everybody.
*looks in the camera like i'm in The Office* Jayce is straight, my ass.
He's kind of in Viktor's place rn. Viktor came out of slums and wanted to give it all to people. Jayce wants to destroy it all. The problem is, it is NOT real in his universe. Like, dude. Use your brain.
It's nice seeing the admission that Jinx is hella smart and does great things in 'our' universe. Terrible, but great.
The green in her blue eyes.
My question is, why are figures/what's left of people mechanical? After Hextech blew up in the universe that Jayce is in? Is it some sort of LoL lore? Therefore that's what Viktor becomes in the current universe after Jayce tried to kill him?
I love her.
Jayce and Viktor the first time they made the relic work... And it's the infinite sign. ;_;
There's something about Ekko, with professor and Jinx, inventing Hextech in this universe, while Jayce tries to destroy it. Honestly, dude would've been way happier if he landed where they are.
LOOK AT THIS PRECIOUS BABYGIRL. It's like when she was creating the thing for Silco with her braids in the air all around her.
The indicators were is that you died a horrible death.
If anything, I'm glad he got the chance to hug Benzo. I need this for SIlco and Jinx.
i was about to say that Silco wasn't mentioned even ONCE during this ep, but decided to wait until the end. the way i gasped. MY BELOVED!!
hey. hey, this isn't Silco (i know and love). the power of family is fucking bullshit, quit with this shit, s2.
when Jinx (well, Powder) and Ekko dance, that's where I roll my eyes and mentally gag. absolutely not. and if THIS is what prompts him to save Jinx in their timeline, then it's a big fat eugh for me.
pretty colours. it suits her.
i am SO imagining Jilco like this. my babies.
they.
Jayce, have you forgotten that you and your mom were dying in your universe?
Heimerdinger should've went back with Ekko.

Yet another Veilguard update with the usual good, the bad, the ugly, and the me freaking out about minor references and callbacks haha
This one is very long sorry
So since the last update I have done as much side content as possible before heading to the Hossberg Wetlands and later Weisshaupt (which I just completed last night) which included, briefly, unlocking all of the solas regrets murals
And uh WOW was that whole deep dive a doozy. I definitely should have spaced out the murals over time rather than movie-marathoned them back to back. But the things I learned about Solas…it’s insanity
In a good way
In a really horrifying way
I loved that our theories about Solas being a spirit of Wisdom first were confirmed, and I lost my mind over the fact that the first elves were spirits who gained physical bodies by taking Titan blood (aka lyrium). And the fact that Solas CREATED THE BLIGHT by essentially making the Titans Tranquil?? And that’s why Dwarves don’t dream????
Losing my mind. Solas what have you DONE.
I still ahev to process it all haha but I do have a few thoughts
So far, I wish there was more engagement with these elements and the Chant of Light. The companions react and say that these reveals basically dismantle Andrastianism but the Chant has several allegorical parallels to what, apparently, really happened. The Maker’s first children were spirits, and all that…so I kind of wish the Chantry had a bigger presence in the game with more reactivity
But that’s a post for another day. For now, I reloaded back to only 3 murals unlocked so the team only knows the story up to Solas creating the Veil. I’ll rewatch the others later.
I got worried about being locked out of stuff so I went ahead and did as much side content as I could with a couple of exceptions. Turns out, I probably didn’t need to do that and it would have made more sense narratively if I hadn’t. More on that in a minute
The Siege of Weisshaupt mission was SO GOOD!! Like…the main missions are really where this game shines, I think. I have gripes with some of the companion conversations, but in the actual story missions, the action, the intensity, all of it is so good. And I thought Ghilan’nain turning her archdemon into a many-headed hydra creature was *chefs kiss* so cool. I love fighting big/unique stuff like that!
All that said the follow up scene with the team at the table leaves…a lot to be desired
Listen, DA games pride themselves on bringing together a team of companions that players adore and fall in love with. Naturally we enjoy helping out our companions because we like them. We don’t have to be told to help them because we just generally do that…and if we don’t then, rip, suffer the consequences
So I got a bit annoyed when the scene suddenly turned to a very overt “fix our problems” narrative
I don’t know, that feels so…forced to me. Varric literally tells me I have to solve everyone’s problems. Which is like…I was going to! Because they’re my friends! But being straight up told like “hey you have to solve everyone’s problems and stop their distractions or this team isn’t going to function is like…I’m sorry are we adults or aren’t we? Why am I being told to babysit the team? Can you guys not pursue these distractions on your own rather than wait for me to give you permission? Did we all forget that two gods are out there rampaging? That they’re strong enough to destroy a fortress that stood against the blight and various conflicts for over 900 years? That they haven’t stopped and show no signs of stopping anytime soon?
But no, by all means, tell me in very obvious terms that my job is now to reconcile all your differences before I face the gods again. That doesn’t feel very handed at all.
Let me be clear. I love to help my companion. I love the idea that you build a team that works well because you have shaped them via your leadership skills. I love the idea that your team works well because you have invested in them. That’s really the heart of any DA game—gather your team, earn their loyalty, and see how well the friends you’ve made along the way assist you in the big battles to come.
But…that scene around the kitchen table could have been so much better, so much more nuanced, and far less “Solve their problems.”
To me, that scene should have been everyone fighting, calling out everyone’s distractions and mistakes, and essentially devolving into outright arguments over the table until Rook yells at everyone to shut up. Everyone is mad, everyone is upset. And then maybe the companions are like “sorry Rook, listen, I have a lot on my mind. I’m still going to help with the Big Problem but I’m also going to pursue this Other Thing whether you like it or not.” No suggestion that it’s now your problem to solve, but a heavy hint that it might get done more quickly if you help (which also gives you room to be an ass and not help). In this scenario, everyone ends up being very disgruntled with you, but you still have your hint that you need to pursue companion questlines if you want to see their cool abilities or special items or get them to be a Hero of the Veilguard or whatever…but that’s just my opinion
Basically I wanted subtly and tension. So much more tension.
What we got instead was a couple of annoyed comments and then Emmrich being like “oh dear we’re all distracted by the things that bother us” and everyone offering up distractions that, yes, need to be resolved…but it’s very easy to be like “hey bud the Hand of Glory and the Nadas Dirthalen can wait until the gods aren’t threatening to destroy the world I think.”
It’s not the worst scene in the world, but it could have been reframed better. Either frame it as “Sorry Rook but none of these factions trust you enough to aid you in the fight, you have to prove yourself to them” (and loop in the companion questlines that way) or show your team literally unraveling because they can’t get along or agree with you—now you see the evidence of what you need to fix, and nobody has to outright tell you to “solve everyone’s distractions.” It’s just implied. Because you saw them fighting. A lot.
Like duh I knew I’d have to resolve everyone’s problems if I want them to like me or stick around! That’s just what I’ve come to expect from RPG games like this. It’s an expectation of the genre. But I don’t want to be told that’s my job now. If anything it triggers my contrarian nature and now I want to see what bad ending I get when I don’t listen to the game’s extremely heavy push for me to deal with everyone’s issues
I won’t, but I’m tempted
I just…wanted it to be better. I want see everyone bitching at each other until everyone leaves in a huff and Rook just sits at the table, head in their hands like “oh my god everyone hates me and they hate each other and we’re going to die if everyone can’t get their shit together”
Then maybe Varric sits down next to them and goes, “Hey kid, did I ever tell you about the time Hawke tried to convince a Rivaini pirate, a weird abomination, a Dalish blood mage, a stiff-necked captain of the guard, a broody elf who glowed in the dark, and a few other friends besides to all agree to fight as a team to stop a qunari invasion in Kirkwall? It worked, more or less. By the end of the night, everyone had worked together enough to end up with one dead Arishok and an entire city’s gratitude.”
Maybe Rook looks up and says, “And how’d they manage that little miracle? Without everyone trying to kill each other in the process.”
And maybe Varric smiles and shrugs. “They had their differences, trust me. Half the time you couldn’t put two of them in a room together without a fight breaking out. But they all believed in one thing. They believed in Hawke.”
Then maybe there’s a pause, as he lets Rook consider that for a moment, before he stands up and says, “It’s a good bedtime story, in any case. I’ll let you sleep on it.”
Sigh. It just would have been cool…
Now in all fairness the scene felt even clunkier because I had actively been doing side quests and helping out my friends so it was like…it felt weird to have this implication that I’m not already helping them. It makes me think I shouldn’t do any of their side quests until after the Siege of Weisshaupt but who knows
I keep pendulum swinging back and forth between moments of brilliance and moments that leave me baffled and wondering who made some of these narrative/writing calls. I don’t hate the game by any stretch of the imagination. Like I said the Siege of Weisshaupt was amazing! And I loved the callbacks to precious games! You should have seen me live reacting and screaming about codexes in the Weisshaupt library haha But it’s like whiplash when something that good is followed up by a scene that feels excessively more hamfisted in comparison.
Anyway I am very busy this weekend and dunno when I’ll get to write another update soooo if you’re following for more, hope to give you more updates in the near-ish future!

can we talk about how Tim meets himself as gun batman who's entire philosophy is that sometimes you have to take extreme measures and the only way to stop crime is to kill. And then literally a few months later Jason shows up and the red hood operates on the exact same philosophy but in a more morally ambiguous way (re: not being a facist dictator tyrant)
#Like I think the parallels are kind of insane#also i think it makes the line tim says when red hood shows up at titan's tower that much more significant#“You've been doing things the easy way”#aka the way gun batman prefers#its just very interesting to me#lena speaks#batman#dc comics#tim drake#batman and robin#robin#jason todd#gun batman#red hood#Jason Todd's attack on Titan tower

The stewards of the old world are always keen to give you a glimpse of their might... According to legend, the ancients built specialized chambers to seal away false prophets.
The Arcane is waking up.
#arcane#melvik#mel medarda#mel arcane#viktor#viktor arcane#spoilers#arcane spoilers#arcane s2#wake up friends - mel and viktor are doing that thing again#I was mentally out of commission after act 2 but after sitting and thinking about this? season 1 parallels were crazy. but this. is INSANE#by the way - this is nowhere near all of them. i did not include dialogue. this MIGHT be HALF of them. i hit image limit here#at this point i don't know whose fight is gonna be crazier. viktor and jayce's or viktor and mel's lolololol#i support mage on mage violence#okay real talk. why are mel and viktor explicitly paralleled more than basically any other characters#it's bc this is the story of the Arcane literally. they are piltover and zaun's only mages respectively. the Arcane is waking up etc.#the macro narrative is about different kinds of magic rising to power again in a place like piltover/zaun which is a refuge from mages#and it's about how they clash - or work together - because the history of the rune wars is repeating itself#also viktor was a false prophet and mel... may not be#it's because the Arcane speaks through them and the show is about what that means and the consequences

to add to the angst of thriller bark zolu, I keep thinking 1) of the parallel between zoro's words to luffy when he agrees to join him and his sacrifice 2) of sanji's words in the aftermath of TB and 3) the consequences of zoro's sacrifice bearing weight in sabaody.
1) while zoro choosing to pretend nothing happened at thriller bark makes sense, since he's not the type of character who'd go boasting about this sort of thing, it also makes even more sense when you think of this,
in the context of this other bit:
zoro, who believes and proclaims his dream of becoming the world's greatest swordsman is all he has, accepts to become part of luffy's crew on the sole condition that he'd never make zoro abandon that dream - otherwise, well, he says it. it's not gonna be pretty. luffy proved he understood the significance this held for zoro later at baratie, to the point he stopped johnny and yosaku from interfering in zoro's duel against mihawk, even though luffy himself was greatly upset abt mihawk hurting him.
overall, luffy is someone who places great importance in ppl's dreams and is willing to go through yet greater lengths to protect those he cherishes and befriends, especially his crew. this is an aspect of luffy's character that shines through in pretty much every arc of the story and something that zoro himself knows well since he's been with luffy the longest. which brings me to,
2)
to say luffy wouldn't have reacted well to zoro's deal with kuma is an understatement. imagine if monkey d. "I won't lose a single member of my crew even if it kills me" "defies the world government itself to save his friend/crew member" luffy were to find out that zoro willingly cast aside his dream and life for him, putting luffy's own dream and safety above his. bc to zoro, as the story progresses, his own ambition means nothing if he can't protect/save luffy, his captain. just imagine.
worse, if we take into account that:
3) thriller bark is the reason why zoro was significantly vulnerable at sabaody. even back before they arrived at the archipelago, zoro was visibly exhausted and injured, which brook notices:
and while zoro fights to the most he can despite the circumstances, his injuries after absorbing luffy's pain eventually leave him open to both kuma and kizaru.
now considering this is how luffy reacts to the whole ordeal when zoro's life is in danger and gets sent away by kuma,
just imagine how luffy would feel if he knew it was zoro sacrificing himself for his sake, which is already painful in itself, that led him to be so much weaker and vulnerable here. oof.
#zolu#tp#long post#yes I'm still thinking abt it no I will never recover from thriller bark#on a less angsty note there's still more to find out abt what roger and ray's relationship was like but#the parallels between ray and zoro are kind of insane actually that was good#anyway back to suffering through impel down#jay reads op

Friends, tonight's Hero Forge theme is betrayal, heartbreak, and having entirely too many dogs.

honestly I think that whatever the Winter King did to transfer his insanity was an accident. not necessarily something that came out of nowhere, but more… he was trying to do one thing and then suddenly he felt a lot more clearheaded
#I've seen speculation that he used the same kind of spell that was used in the main timeline to create Ricardio and I dig it#but yeah I think narratively the insanity transfer is supposed to parallel the dum-dum solution#where like. #hghh. spinel#cannot believe this man is an anpk character that i get to enjoy actually.#like. he is such a specific character.#catered to a specific audience (which i'm part of ww)#his design. his voice. his everything.#like. they know exactly who they are catering to with him ww i love it#he is such an unexpected character to have in this show... very thankful that i get to witness this#he is messy and actually interesting... not the kind of villain who makes me yawn#there are things to explore and i need that to enjoy a character#he even has plenty of parallels and neat contrasts with so many characters.. ohh i am so spoiled#i missed him. and his voice#the situation was so dire i had to start the shoushimin anime because his VA is in it :/#good seasonal anime btw ww his VA has a good voice but i wanted the spinel voice specifically though#so it's a good thing he came back. so i get to listen to him#i really enjoy his line deliveries...! the さあ、どうする is in my mind#thinking about that thing with love and how loving him and being involved with him comes with its own kind of pain#and a specific emotional baggage that you have to carry etc#this stuff is soo compelling. of course i'd go insane over it w#anyway. i've been rotating him in my mind. he is so.#spinel#hz064#character notes#episode notes

That different people can engage with the same piece of media and come out of it with wildly different interpretations is a testament to the evolutionary miracle that is the human brain. It is also very annoying.
#but i'm gonna mind my own business.#like the point of saw and luthen's characters TO ME isn't 'Both Sides Bad' it's 'revolution is ugly beyond belief and#if you make it out alive it won't be with clean hands EVEN IF your cause is just and the alternative (fascism) is unbearable.#i think the audience is meant to be disturbed by their accelerationist tactics we are meant to think about whether the ends really justify#the means we are meant to think about whether 'good' is something you believe or something you do or something in between.#we as the audience of a prequel series also have the benefit of near-omniscience bc WE know that while saw and luthen are poking the bear#and playing with human lives like they're chess pieces the empire is actively building a weapon capable of blowing up entire planets#and mass-murdering billions which they will later use without hesitation. saw and luthen DON'T know that which complicates things further.#collapsing all that nuance and reducing it to Both Sides Bad is. well. reductive. but like i said i'm gonna mind my own business (lying).#btw i say all of this as someone who studied real-life parallels of these kinds of things extensively in school and had to stop because#i was too much of a kumbaya pacifist and it quite literally drove me insane.#so if anybody came out of that show saying Both Sides Bad it should've been me. and yet. like idk man at the end of the day#there is a difference between a rebellion using violence to claw back an imperfect democracy and a brutally repressive empire.#sorry i promise i'll stop talking about this show someday but ummm that day is not today. apparently.

i might be slow but i only realized her fes hairstyle is based on her childhood a few hours ago
#<had heavy kanade thoughts today#girl...dedicating yourself to helping other people is only a temporary solution to the void in your heart...#it wont fix your self hatred...save yourself first....#kanade is a lot mfmgnf though im mostly a mzen oshi so i dont know her character as well#one thing i like is how shes always basking in her fond childhood memories..in the garden when her parents were still here l#i realized her cards have a lot of rose garden theming going on...and her bloomfes card was a barren wasteland...sickening..#i havent actually read her bfes story yet i should go do that#ok this is where ill start sounding insane but the mzkn parallels where they both kind of run away from their problems#mzk is aware of it at least but I don't think knd realizes shes using her saviour complex to avoid confronting her selfhate#she just sees saving others as her only salvation. to make herself feel betterm instead of addressing the root ofnthe problem#i have to..microwave kanade in my head more...#also i meant to say flower garden not rose...anyway n25 motifs always drive me insane...

thinks about metatron referencing god only talking about amara when he was drunk and the direct parallels that then draws to john’s relationship to mary’s memory after she died, and hey that was a fucking insane line to put in their show right.
#never not thinking about that. fellas you ever build the whole fucking universe on a foundation of your sister imprisoned because you fucked#up so bad and now you can’t ever acknowledge or admit it or it all falls apart. but you WILL make ur kids act the whole fucked up mess out#again to try and justify your actions to yourself. (or watch. and hope that they’ll get it right? but maybe that would be worse. prove that#you could have. but not anymore. you can’t face that mistake anymore. rewind the story with another pair and watch it go horribly wrong.)#the show is not subtle at all about amara-mary being parallels. and it was never subtle about john being their dad who is god. and now god#of course. is kind of like their dad. but it is also insane. they did not have to do this. no one forced their hand and made them make amara#his sister. instead of his wife. but. well!!!!#i mean!!! more for me!!!! but holy shit insane tv show!!!!

something that i think is really interesting about billy's view of flint in s3 is that he thinks flint's death (if it's in a self-sacrificial way) will not absolve him of his sins in life but that it will make up for the hurt he's caused. or at least that billy wants it to. he pushes flint to take the maroon queen hostage so that flint will die, but flint will die for the crew. billy says in s3e6 "with all the shit that he's done, the things he's gotten away with, [flint dying to free them from the maroons] would have been fair. that would have been right" and that he wants to see "the moment the world finally catches up to [flint]" if/when he dies dueling teach. billy has a very simple idea of justice - he wants flint to die for the death and destruction he has caused, no matter how. that will make the world right, that the narrative will be balanced again.
but what billy doesn't know, and what makes me INSANE about this show is that the full quote from billy is is "I think part of the reason I've been able to stand by his [flint's] side is that I wanted to make sure I've got a good view of the moment the world finally catches up to him... and this story starts to make sense again." but to flint, what he has done is in service of his own justice. justice for the deaths of thomas and miranda and james mcgraw, for the theft of his home in london and again his home in nassau. but to billy, HIS narrative identifies flint as the villain. as the monster. for billy to get justice, flint must die. but it's SUCH a good line, because it also prompts the viewer to think - in OUR narrative, which follows flint and silver mostly, flint must succeed. we want him to beat teach and take the fleet back and overthrow the british empire. flint is shown to be a murderer but he is also shown to be deeply deeply human and we are set up to sympathize him. but it makes you consider what other voices we aren't hearing. who else has been hurt by flint's actions? what narratives have flint as the villain ? none of the characters in black sails are the heroes in every story - but to who are they the villains?
#idk this SHOW MAN. the rewatch is going quite well. makes me INSANE#'yes yes flint is billys england weve all seen it' IT JUST MAKES ME SO RABID !!!!!!!!!#the flint billy parallels make me climb walls bro#like. flint wants freedom from a colonial monarchist rule and becomes a pirate. which were famously democratic. and yeah sure hes not NOT#elected for his position - but black sails goes out of its way to show in s1 the kinds of subterfuge going on about the voting.#flint does NOT keep his position as captain fairly until silver. and even then we arent shown the voting but silver clearly keeps his#constituents happy somehow. idk the ship politics are soooo interesting to me!!!!!#i also think theres something deeper in black sails in general about leaders/followers. in terms of like. flint proposing his plato-based#philsopher-king bullshit. and his disregard for 'the men' as people beneath him... but ALL the captains do this. there's not a single#instance of a crew member whos given much agency or who makes a bid for leadership and isnt punished (singleton dusfrene billy even)#there is only the Leaders - flint silver charles vane rackham teach - and the Followers - the variable number of walrusmen that changes#based on the ship theyre on lol - the men on the ranger and the colonial dawn#granted some of this is just due to narrative reasons i think. but in a show thats so deliberate. its worth considering.#black sails#canis watches black sails

the sexy brutale's portrayal of what disability is like is so wild.
you ask your good friend, as an architect wheelchair user, if you can build a lift into his mansion, both to give him more space in the basement, and generally as an accessibility feature.
he says "oh, yeah!!! sure man!!!"
and you say "great, where can i build this?"
and he says: "yeah, in the furnace!"
and you say "...hm?"
and he says "yeah man, just build it in the furnace!"
and you say "but won't i burn to death if anything goes wrong with the power?"
and he says "yeah, sorry...... yeah sorry the only place we could put it is the furnace...... sorry......"
and then he unlawful act manslaughters you in an entirely unrelated arson.
#the sexy brutale#tsb#thanos gorecki#lucas bondes#genuinely insane how negligent lucas was#like i do think the end of the game is generally good and lucas hating himself forever will do nothing#and certainly won't bring anyone back#but it was only a matter of time before someone died or got seriously injured at one of his parties#even if the arson never happened#he kept dangerous exotic pets in unsecure enclosures with no warning signs#he kept a practice stage separated from a fifty foot drop with a flimsy glass pane#he put on dangerous magic shows with little to no safety precautions#he actively poisoned people at his bars!!!#while the ways the guests died in his mind were a little over the top#they weren't far off what could have actually happened had the mansion continued on#i do like the thing about him looking at his hunting trophies to remind himself what kind of person he was#yet continuing to act in ways overtly dangerous to his best friends' lives for no reason other than his own entertainment#it parallels with how he replayed all his friends' deaths in his mind yet never really changed or got better#lucas does have this habit of doing things thoughtlessly#hurting people#and then torturing himself without actually fixing his behaviour#he is constantly berating himself but in doing so almost absolves himself of the responsibility to do better in the future#because if you're inherently an evil person#no one can expect better of you#not even yourself#anyway i liked this game if you couldn't tell

To be clear, I'm sending this ask not to start an argument but because talking about S/amson's morality as a subject interests me. This is all intended politely, though I am bad at tone. While my personal thoughts on S/amson's stuff in act 3 are a little complicated (shit of him to do, and they have him be excited about the annulment on the templar route, the latter of which I do have to wonder if they did simply bc the writers hate addicts (they do) or not. Still it did happen and it IS odd when people try to act like he had less part in the attempted genocide of the gallows than C/ullen, who was way more hesitant than S/amson), how did you come to the conclusion that he was purposefully throwing mages at slavers? He says pretty explicitly that he didn't know and was trying to get mages out of Kirkwall, are you assuming he's lying or is there some extra information I'm missing? I guess I could see why he might lie here if that was his intention, but I don't… really think he is? there's nothing to point to it? I see "he gave mages to a slaver" as a point a lot in the S/amson discourse, but I don't know how people are coming to the conclusion that he wasn't genuinely doing the best with the no resources he had at that moment, and the smuggler he was using ended up being a slaver without his knowledge. This being said, the fandom posing him as super good compared to C/ullen is really weird, and while I understand why it happens, it is frustrating seeing people ignore his blatent flaws.
do i think he deliberately gave mages over to slavers? no, i don't think that. i also don't think a lack of deliberateness absolves him of blame. k/irkwall is notorious for slavers - how many do we kill in game? we find a bunch just hanging out in lowtown, and the docks, and near the wounded coast. but the guy who lives on the edge of the docks never suspects that the man taking runaways for free is a slaver?
with regards to f/eynriel, s/amson is very explicit about how he didn't help f/eynriel as much as possible because he didn't have money. instead, he directs f/eynriel to a ship captain he knows. he knew the slaver, and he sent both o/livia and f/eynriel to him. when h/awke says "of course your friend's a kidnapper", s/amson quickly says r/einer's not a friend, but someone who "isn't scared to try out this business". but what business is he referring to? f/eynriel doesn't have coin, that's the entire reason s/amson turned him away. what other reason does a ship captain in kirkwall HAVE to take people on for free? s/amson deliberately sends f/eynriel to someone else to deal with. and when he heard rumours that person was selling people, what did he do? nothing, until h/awke comes looking.
#asks#i think he wants to think he's a good person who is trying his best to do good and be good#and so that's how he defends himself and the harm that comes as a result of his actions#and in THAT way he parallels c/ullen actually#but. even as far back as act one. his ambient dialogue already indicates that he's mostly extremely bitter abt being kicked out of the orde#he has dialogue that's like 'people wouldn't treat me like this if i was still in the order'. the nerve of saying this to a FERELDAN REFUGE#and keran exists RIGHT THERE as a counter-example for the quest in act 3. s/amson straight up BETRAYS THE MAGES TO THE TEMPLARS#keran fucking LEAVES THE ORDER bc he refuses to be part of that kind of violence anymore. samson betrays the mages and then will GO BACK#if you advocate for him.#he likes to think he's a good person. that doesn't mean he is one.#i think he THINKS he's very sympathetic to the mages. but then you get that line in act 3 that's like 'but at the end of the day they have#options we don't' which is yknow. an insane take. to go from 'mages deserve to be free and live unafraid'#to 'maybe i WILL rejoin the police state currently trying to g*nocide them'. like that's a HUGE LEAP that doesn't come out of nowhere.#anti chantry#fandom critical#samson critical
