🚨 Lifer Alert: Lesser Scaup

Several new lifers in the last week or so!! American tree sparrow, ruddy duck, snow bunting, rough-legged hawk, and common merganser!!

My tiny badass dad and mom, octagenarian-and-very-nearly, both longtime birders, recently hiked a mountain in Panama just to catch a glimpse of this Harpy eagle and her fluffy babby chick. 🥹 (From a respectful distance, of course, with an honored local guide.) They know how much these birds mean to me, so they took and sent plenty of pictures. Oh, my heart.

“Life List #1: Blue Jay”

A birding life list is a way of keeping track of all the different birds someone has seen over the course of their life.

I first started birding when I was a tween, but I got away from it for many years. It wasn’t until last year, 2022, that I got back into it. With the help of various birding apps I was able to easily identify birds I wasn’t familiar with, and keep track of my new life list.

I decided I wanted to do something with the ever growing list of birds I’d seen, so I introduce the first plate in the life list series. Each plate features a hand painted portrait of the bird it’s for, as well as 3-D representations of some of the foods they commonly eat around the rim.

This blue jay is surrounded by peanuts, both shelled and unshelled, sunflower seeds, flies, and beetles.

Finally caught up the Willet. I have heard them in the tall grass at Farmington but had never spotted one. Pretty cool to add another to my life list.
