I got some cool pictures of cormorants over the weekend. So pumped about it.

PONIES.

These fellows are residents of Assateague Island and are feral, despite their otherwise lovely disposition. We watched them munch on some grasses in the high marsh for a while before leaving them to it.

Great Blue Heron Hunting

Found this GBH in the stream by the parking lot at my local birding spot. This was my first day out with the 400mm f2.8 and I was hoping for a heron, duck, or goose to practice some photos with - I lucked out.

Pictures don't show, but this GBH was a skilled hunter. Caught 3 crawdads and two fish while I was observing. Ive taken plenty of photos of herons hunting and have never seen a success rate like that. It was way cool.

In a few of the pictures you can see the nictating membrane, or the clear second eyelid.

More cormorant love. I just learned that their name is derived from "sea raven" in Latin.

I was particularly excited about the action shots. The light was pretty harsh in the wee morning hours, but it was fascinating to watch them tussle over the pier posts.
