Sleek grey tones and metallic threads for this summer/early autumn antique outfit, pairing a hagi (bush clover) patterned kimono, with a fantastic nami chidori (plovers on the waves) obi

Chestnut-backed Chickadee
flickr
Chestnut-backed Chickadee by Kip Hutchison Via Flickr: A handsome chickadee that matches the rich brown bark of the coastal trees it lives among, the Chestnut-backed Chickadee is the species to look for up and down the West Coast and in the Pacific Northwest. Active, sociable, and noisy as any chickadee, you’ll find these birds at the heart of foraging flocks moving through tall conifers with titmice, nuthatches, and sometimes other chickadee species. Though they’re at home in dark, wet woods, they’ve also readily taken to suburbs and ornamental shrubs of cities like San Francisco.

6th of November 2024: Rose Robin
Tumblr media
Today we have a bird to look at: the Rose Robin (Petroica rosea). They are Australian. Following sexual dimorphism patterns of birds, the males have a brightly coloured rose chest, giving them their name, while females have a greyish colour with only a slight pink tinge on their chest [1].
They are migratory, spending their summer months in the upper canopies of wetter rainforests breeding while moving further north during the winter months to open and drier habitats [2]. This makes them more visible during the winter, meaning that if you’re in Australia and were hoping to see them soon, you’re sort of shit out of luck until March [3].
If you do want to find them, they are considered to have a very distinctive song which helps identify them [3]. Otherwise right now they are busy feeding on insects and making cup-shaped nests out of green moss, which may end up parasitised by cuckoos. They are considered very active and mobile, rarely reusing the same perch and having a darting and tumbling flight pattern [2].
