So you know how sometimes you do something as a kid or a teenager and you think it's totally normal and then the memory pops into your head as an adult and it suddenly recontextualizes the whole thing? Anyway shout out to my super nice high school math teacher, who also had the misfortune of being A. the first teacher to give me a syllabus that (crucially) included point totals and how grades were calculated B. scored tests as like 75% of the grade and C. allowed us to take tests as a group All those factors combined into two incidents that, in retrospect, he was in no way expecting to deal with but teenage me thought were totally normal (behind a read more because it got long)
The first was when I stopped doing math homework not long into the school year and he stopped me after class to (very kindly, very gently) ask me if I was okay and if everything was okay at home, because I'd stopped doing my homework but he knew I knew the material. I said "I stopped doing the homework because I crossed the threshold on the point totals on the rubric where I no longer need to turn in any homework to get an A." He paused, kinda blinked at me, and said "That only works if you get 100% on every test" I kind of stared back at him in blank incomprehension, and was like "Yes????" "What happens if you don't get 100% on a test?" "Well. I do get 100% on every test, but if I ever miss a question, you offer extra credit questions on every test" He didn't know what to say to that lol The other time was when he announced future tests would be allowed to be worked on in groups of three or four, and I walked up to him after class and said "Any group I am in will be getting 100% on the tests. That is unfair to the other groups, and unfair to the people in my group, who will not get a chance to test their skills because I am not risking my grade on their math abilities. Can I take the tests solo?" Again, teenage me thought this was a perfectly normal, logical thing to do, but looking back as an adult like oh my gosh there is no way my poor math teacher was expecting to have to deal with that. He did let me take math tests solo I tried the "calculate points then stop doing the homework" thing in my English class the next year and it did not work because that teacher had an "extra credit doesn't count if you haven't done all your assignments" policy :(
#the person behind the yarn#my secret is out a was a math person in school#it's not a secret lol I've offered to help people with math homework here before#but yeah! in school I did not consider myself creative at all and was all about math and science#but especially math! all my math teachers pretty much since math class started being a separate class#very quickly just moved me to the back of the class and let me read through class#except when other kids needed help learning math#and I would tutor them? idk it worked#I gave off such intense goody two shoes energy in school that I got away with a LOT#the english extra credit thing is pretty much the only thing I did not get away with in school#but that's a different story lol

I used to despise Eridan and think he was the absolute worst character (barring Cronus ig) but you have shown me the light and completely turned my opinion around and now I think he is such an endearing little freak <3 I read your whole blog already but if you've got any more thoughts on eri or anyone else then I hope you post them bc I'd love to hear more abt it!
i have sooo many controversial opinions about the dancestors you have noooooo idea
#always glad to have another person go 'oh eridan's not that bad huh'#like he IS a freak and there is SO MUCH thats wrong with him#but he's supposed to be an antagonist AND sympathetic AND funny AND pathetic AND tragic#like all these things can be true hes just a complex character#same w a lot of them#vriska equius and gamzee all kind of fall into this boat#yes there is a lot thats wrong with them but they are also 13#let he who was not a shithead at 13 cast the first stone#anyway ive been hesitant about talking about the dancestors because if my eridan opinions are controversial...#but the tl;dr is that almost all of them suck horribly#like collectively they are the worst characters in homestuck and thats on purpose#bc their role in the story is villainous like theyre the reason lord english even exists#if the alternian trolls as a rule are meant to be sympathetic even if they have a lot of problems#then the beforus trolls are like a worst case scenario of 'what if they never address their problems and grow up that way'#theyre the counterpoint to the comics themes of being a kid and growing up#learning to care about each other and become responsible#the beforus trolls are children who never grew up#going through the exact same problems and drama as when they were children#because they never took responsibility for their own actions or their treatment of each other#And That's Terrible

The Great Swan
There once was a swan called The Great Swan. She lived in a beautiful pond with her mate. Together they had three cygnets. They were a happy family.
As they got older the cygnets eventually old enough to set out and create their own families, but every summer they would visit the pond. And they would bring their own families with them. And when their own cygnets were fully grown the cycle continued. One big, happy family.
As time went on The Great Swan's mate became ill, and after a while his time in the pond ended. The family grieved the loss as the mate's soul flew around in the sky above the pond, watching over his home and his big, grieving family.
Time passed, the family grew, and while the pain lessened it never dissapeared. The Great Swan still lived in the pond, and her family still visited every summer. She never stopped missing her mate, but she had their cygnets, their grandcygnets and even great grandcygnets who would visit the pond every summer. One big, happy family.
One year The Great Swan suddenly fell ill, and it quickly got worse. Her family came to visit and help as much as they could, but The Great Swan knew her time was up. She didn't fear death, she was satisfied with her life and eager to see her beloved mate again.
She told her family "I see him waiting for me,up there in the sky above the pond. There's no reason to cry. I'll be with him again soon, and we'll watch over you all from above the pond. Our big, happy family".
One or more of her grandcygnets would visit every day, with their own cygnets in tow, until The Great Swan felt too weak for visitors and requested that only her own cygnets stay with her, as she didn't want to be alone. She slept peacefully as she prepared to fly with her mate once more.
When she finally woke up once more her mate stood before her, beckoning her to fly with him. She stretched her wings, feeling stronger and lighter than she had ever felt in her life, and together they took to the night sky. Together they flew below the moon and stars, above their pond.
Down in the pond their family were grieving the loss of The Great Swan, while also celebrating her long life. And if the pond is still there, then so will the souls of The Great Swan and here mate be, where they still to this day will be watching over their big, happy family.

there is something so annoying to me about people reading a poem and then deciding it’s bad because it doesn’t match their personal experience or because for some reason they think all poems are autobiographical
#read an anne carson poem on twitter this morning and a ton of replies were like#‘people will write poems about how much they hate their friends why don’t they just get better friends or go to better restaurants’#‘i can’t relate to this at all!’#and part of it i think is a desperate need to get off a snarky take for likes and retweets#but like. why go through life reading poetry this way. why go through life reading anything this way!#it reminds me about that post about hating the ‘i love the way men love’ poem#where a bunch of tags were like ‘my dad just tells me he loves me. sorry you don’t know what that’s like!’#like. first of all thinking that the author hasn’t experienced that AND thinking that’s like. an own on them says more about you#than the author. second of all you don’t even know it was about her!! third of all just bc you can’t relate doesn’t mean it’s bad#why must everything be relatable why is everything taken as an indication of an authors personal story I DONT UNDERSTAND#like what are we learning in english classes these days. whoever said sometimes the curtains are just blue is to blame for this i think#i need a text post tag

started up SSX 3 for the first time in at least 10 years and it's still fun! muscle memory still remembers those shortcuts and tricks, very fun making a turn on a feeling and ending up on a fast rail shortcut. then bonking into the next rail like oh right that kept happening. crashing out on walls. getting slightly airborne and grabbing the board instead of boosting. underestimating how long the end part of a trick is.
AND I STILL HATE METRO CITY
#might try and play the 'story mode' all the way through#it really is easier when you can actually navigate the menu and read the instructions for tricks#and understand what ALL the stats mean#all games used to come with the added difficulty of understanding like 5-20% of the english#I learned the words item and run from pokemon! eventually!#ssx3 was very difficult to save in I remember - I lost my oldest save file :(#dealing with savefiles in a language you don't properly speak was horrifying#we never saved any records we had learned to fear the word 'overwrite'
