Due to the pandemic, today was my first kids birthday party in the Fozen 2 Era

Deeply saddened to share that we have moved beyond groups of 4 year olds screaming "LET IT GOOO" while making dramatic arm flailing motions on repeat for an hour

Delighted to announce that the arm flailing 4 year olds now try to hit the operatic high notes in the aurora

Pre-school children are not renowned for their operatic ability

Misinformation is such a weird spiral. Sometimes I'll hear someone say something just super unhinged to me and then I'll look it up. And it leads me down the weirdest rabbit hole of tracking down how we got from one inconclusive study with results that could not be replicated in a later study. To my coworker claiming that Cocomelon was specifically created to addict children.

I was looking it up knowing nothing about Cocomelon apart from it exists and annoys parents. I was thinking maybe it would lead me to studies talking about how short form algorithmic content platforms such as youtube might effect young kids. But there's really not enough research to really determine anything about Cocomelon specifically. But mostly I just found a lot of parental anecdotes about kids having meltdowns when they take Cocomelon away. Followed by online articles citing the first study under the guise of "studies show." And one Guardian article where the reporter says it's like preschooler crack about the Netflix show.

I think it's very telling as a society the way we jump on calling everything potentially harmful an addiction. I don't think it's actually that helpful to tell parents "Your kid is addicted turn that show off immediately or your kid will be 'cOgNiTivEly ImPaReD.'" Is the kid upset because they're addicted to the show or are they upset because you turned off an activity they were enjoying and they didn't get a say.

I don't know if other people just don't remember being a kid, but I had my fair share of meltdowns about being forced to turn off shows before I got to see the end or getting in trouble for trying to sneak in an extra episode without my parents noticing. I don't think that's a sign of addiction so much as it is being a kid.

When you're an adult you get to choose when and how to watch your shows (especially in the modern day) as a kid you get very little say. When you're an adult you understand why you need to put down youtube. As a kid, especially a young kid, you don't always and you haven't had decades of practice regulating and dealing with whatever emotions come with being interrupted from something you're enjoying.

So much of the pop psychology around kid's media comes from just parents complaining about whatever kids show is popular. It get spiraled as this specific show destroying the kid's brain because parents exchange the stories about how their kids also act that way. Then suddenly it's a problem with Cocomelon specifically rather than just an aspect of kids being kids.

There is a discussion to be had about kids entertainment, but I think we gotta stop deciding everything kids are into is a uniquely cognitive destroying and addictive thing. I don't think this generation of toddlers will turn out any worse for watching Cocomelon than mine did for watching Teletubbies.

As far as actual full time jobs, I'll honestly just take whatever's tolerable. I'm not too picky and I've never really had a dream career. I just go where the wind takes me. However, I do have a dream side gig that's become one of my biggest life goals for the foreseeable future.

Once I get my fursuit, my goal is to start my own small gig where my service is entertaining at children's birthday parties and similar functions. I also would really like to volunteer and visit children in hospitals. I love kids. I always have. I'm not very good in daycare kind of settings though, as far as managing tantrums and keeping kids organized and in line. I do, however, pride myself in being able to get down on a kid's level and relate to them, as well as keep them engaged and entertained. That's where I find I'd be good at parties and functions. I also can heavily relate to the struggle of being a kid with failing health, as I had severe health problems as a kid that I still struggle with the aftermath of, and children's hospitals/childhood cancer/childhood disabilities charities have always hit a soft spot for me. So I feel like I'd do great in that kind of setting as well. I'd find great fulfillment in making kids smile in either setting.

Once my fursuit is completed and I receive it, I'm immediately going to start working towards this.
