Beginners Guide to Portraying Solaris
In about 2k words or so
Dialect and Verbiage
Considering Solaris was born and presumably spent her developmental years in Geneva, it makes sense to imagine that English isn’t her first language. Not to say she isn’t good at it, but she certainly has a few quirks with her dialogue that make that easily apparent.
Perhaps the biggest tell is Solaris’ subconscious aversion towards contractions. She will use them occasionally, but a surprising amount of her dialogue breaks them up into two individual words. Generally, she seems to learn towards -have and -are contractions (wouldn’t, you’re), and tends to use them more in reference to herself (I’d, I’ve) than other contexts.
Along this vein, it’s also understandable that she tends not to jump to much American slang. If anything, more often than not she will jump to more complex words, rather than shortening them to be easier for others around her to digest.
Virtues and Vices
For being a Zoraxis employee who built a laser of mass destruction for the richest person on the planet, that isn’t to say there’s nothing about Solaris’ conduct worth admiring. On the contrary, she has a surprising amount of good qualities to her. Which makes sense when you consider she probably wouldn’t be half as good an engineer if she wasn’t.
One of the more deceptive elements of her character is her surprisingly amicable conduct before she realizes she’s dealing with an Agent instead of her assistant. We’ve seen many examples of Zoraxis subordinates being treated anywhere from poorly to downright cruel (the Fabricator seemingly doesn’t pay her guards proper wages, John would sooner kill his butler than risk the Agent escaping unscathed, and Zor will kill anyone they dislike at the literal push of a button). Solaris, however, seems not to stoop to the same level as her peers.
Solaris has several quotes she will only say before the Agent’s cover is blown, implying some willingness to chat with the new intern sent to keep her company beyond Earth’s atmosphere (VO_Space_SQ_PGT_Pickup_01: “Did they finally approve my blaster design? Oh, wait… That’s just a bolt driver…”, VO_Space_SQ_Plug_Meat_Fuse: “Crafty and dangerous… I approve!”, VO_Space_SQ_Drinking_Juice_Cover_Safe_02: “Ehh… Enjoy it if you can. Yes, that’s all we get to drink.”).
She’ll also be wary to keep the safety of her new ‘assistant’ in mind, offering up whatever advice or commentary she deems necessary to keep them from accidentally killing themself (VO_Space_SQ_Fuse_Panel_Unscrewed_02: “I appreciate your proactive attitude. Just mind the high voltage?”, VO_Space_SQ_Life_Fuse_Removed_Cover_Safe: “You know… you need that one to breathe?”). While it’s hard to call her behavior ‘nice’, it’s leagues better than the treatment you would get from other Zoraxis staff.
However, Solaris doesn’t treat everyone with such a level headed deposition. It’s quite obvious that she wouldn’t treat the Agent that way, but she doesn’t exactly have a soft spot for Zor, either. Her insubordination presumably stems from her lack of loyalty to Zoraxis, as addressed in her dossier (“It is worth noting that her relationship with Zor is less stable than some of their other underlings. It is apparent she’s dedicated to herself first and foremost…”). Judging by her surprised remark when getting a phone call from Zor directly (VO_Space_SQ_Zor_Convo_02: “Dr Zor! Something exciting must be going on since you’ve decided to talk to me…"), it can be assumed that she knows they aren’t exactly fond of her, either.
On a better note, Solaris appears to be very detail oriented when it comes to the situations she finds herself in. She takes a very keen interest in the structural stability of the Agent’s shuttle after the Death Engine’s shockwave damages it (VO_Space_SQ_Solve_Hull_Breach: “Note to self… Check on fuses and adjust risk assessment calculations. The chances of the shuttle surviving another blast are… well, low.”), implying that she is ready and willing to add the task to her checklist at the drop of a hat. This is also displayed in the Z-Mail she sends to Zor after being sent the coordinates to fire upon their own HQ. Despite receiving a ‘direct order’ from her boss, she takes the uncharacteristic targeting into account, and refuses to act upon the command.
This also may explain why Solaris takes the time to browse through the Agent’s entire file after it was sent to her (presumably also through Z-Mail). The Agent is a stranger to her. It is difficult to know how to go about solving a problem when you don’t know what the threat is. The more she learns about the Agent, the more aware she will be of how to go about handling them.
Solaris is also very dedicated to following rules and protocol. It is unclear whether or not she enjoys it, but she will follow it thoroughly, with a heavy emphasis on the safety it provides both for her and others around her (VO_Space_SQ_Pre_Fuse_Banter_01: “Sit tight. We do have security protocol for a reason.”, VO_Space_SQ_Open_Airlock_Cover_Safe: “Oh, right… There’s radioactive waste in your docking bay. You can get to that after you’re cleared by ground control.”, VO_Space_SQ_Cameras_Online: “Where’s that camera feed… Ah! Not dead yet. I’ll put you to work as soon as I can confirm your arrival with ground control.”). Even once getting in contact with ground control, the formal way in which she opens their discussion (VO_Space_SQ_Phone_Convo_Start: “This is Death Engine Commander Solaris, clearance 20R7…") implies great respect towards the obligations of her job.
However… One of Solaris’ biggest flaws is her confidence. And if she encounters a situation that she feels confident she can handle, she is willing to break protocol in order to handle the situation herself. The most blatant example of this is her reaction to the Agent moving faster than she was accounting them to- breaking open the docking arm container before she even gets ground control on the phone (VO_Space_SQ_Not_Assistant: “You’re not my new assistant, are you? Stop messing with things while I figure out what to do with you.”).
This also seems to be the reason why Solaris does not act immediately after she identifies the Agent for what they are- underestimating them out of a sense of clearly misplaced confidence (VO_Space_SQ_Computer_Press_X_Buttons_Cover_Blown_02: “Looking for answers? Hah! I enjoy watching you struggle…”).
Confidence and Control
As aforementioned, Solaris seems to have a bad habit of succumbing to her confidence. It’s moments like these that shine a light on her villainous underbelly that Zoraxis is known for.
While willing to play nice with an assistant, Solaris will completely change her tune once she reveals the Agent for who they are. She’ll pick and taunt at the Agent from the safety of the Death Engine’s control center, her comments ranging from threatening to downright cruel at times (VO_Space_SQ_Recieved_File: “I received your file and there’s more here than I expected… I’ll read it while I watch you squirm.”, VO_Space_SQ_Operate_Airlock_02: “Sure, go ahead. A little radiation can’t hurt. Oh, why not open the other door as well?”, VO_Space_SQ_Low_O2_Cover_Blown_01: “You can ignore that alert. Oxygen starvation is not a bad way to go.”, VO_Space_SQ_Read_File_06: “Your file is unbelievable… You know a normal agent would have died dozens- hundreds of times… Note to self… Conduct post mortem examination of agent.”, VO_Space_SQ_Life_Fuse_Removed_Cover_Blown_01: “Decided to end it all so soon?”). She takes blatant pleasure in playing with her food, to the point where she will prioritize it above her work.
However, confidence requires control. And the more of it she loses, the less confident she becomes. Solaris has a very interesting vocal quirk that is easy to go unnoticed. That being that the more dangerous the situation gets- the more nervous the situation makes her- the more aggressive she becomes.
Prior examples of her threats- while certainly hostile- ride the range of playfully sadistic in nature. Once Phoenix appears genuinely capable of dismantling the Death Engine, however, she quickly changes her tune, jumping into remarks devoid of her usual villainous mirth (VO_Space_SQ_Rip_Panel_03: “Stop that at once! Mess with the reactor and you die!”, VO_Space_SQ_Rip_Panel_01: “What do you think you’re doing?! Blowing up the Death Engine is guaranteed to kill you.”, VO_Space_SQ_Post_Controller_Banter_03: “Are you ready to sacrifice yourself? Because your odds for surviving this are zero.”, VO_Space_SQ_Post_Controller_Banter_02: “If you blow up the Death Engine, you’re going down with it.”).
It is only once the Agent is inches away from completing their objective that Solaris finally lets the mask fully slip. And it's in this moment that it becomes blatantly apparent what Solaris is truly afraid of. More than failing the mission. More than the destruction of the Death Engine (though, not to say that is of no concern to her).
Solaris is afraid of being hurt- of the Agent killing her in their reckless little stunt. It is unclear whether she verbalizes these concerns instinctively, or as a last resort in a bid for her life (VO_Space_SQ_Start_Chain_Reaction_02: “You reckless fool! Okay… I can fix this…”, VO_Space_SQ_Start_Chain_Reaction_01: “What have you done?! We’re both going to die-!”, VO_Space_SQ_Grab_Crystal_02: “It only takes one stupid decision with that crystal and we’re both dead.”, VO_Space_SQ_Grab_Crystal_01: “Do you realize how dangerous that crystal is? … You’ll kill us both!”). Regardless of the reasons why, it emphasizes an aspect of Solaris that often goes unnoticed.
She is also not above trying to disguise genuine fear behind the use of threats, though it becomes a lot less convincing the more dire the situation gets (VO_Space_SQ_Catch_Thrown_Object_02: “Oh… Just… safely throw the crate towards earth and nobody will get hurt-”, VO_Space_SQ_Catch_Thrown_Object_01: “How… dexterous of you… Don’t get any silly ideas, now-”, VO_Space_SQ_Grab_Wincon_01: “Put that down! Before you, uh… hurt yourself-!”, VO_Space_SQ_Start_Chain_Reaction_03: “Idiot! You killed us both! … Well, I’ll probably be fine-”).
Assorted Curiosities
Below are some other quirks of Solaris that I couldn’t fit into any of the prior categories.
She seems to talk to herself rather frequently, and makes a habit of doing so throughout the Death Engine mission (VO_Space_SQ_Solve_Hull_Breach: “Note to self… Check on fuses and adjust risk assessment calculations…”, VO_Space_SQ_Controller_Impact: “Note to self… Make sure docking arm manual override container is securely fastened to hull and not sliding all over the damn station.”, VO_Space_SQ_Read_File_06: “… Note to self… Conduct post mortem examination of agent.”)
While going over the Agent’s file, she seems rather nonplussed about the majority of their feats- despite the fact they all involve her tech. This may be because the damage caused more impact to Zor than to her. The only thing she seems to get genuinely upset about was the destruction of the Prototype-Machine Z, which may be because of its inevitable importance to the Death Engine (VO_Space_SQ_Read_File_04: “Ahh, so you’ve encountered my gravity tech in Zor’s lodge before… You’ll note I’ve made improvements since you destroyed my prototype.”)
Despite building many successful inventions, as well as the Death Engine- which the Agency would go on to deem “[one of] the most powerful weapons known to humanity”, Solaris seems to have occasional doubts about her abilities as an engineer (VO_Space_SQ_Use_Offline_Gravbox_Cover_Blown_01: “Watching you struggle with concepts like electricity really puts me at ease.”)
She is incredibly good with math, and will not only solve equations by hand or even in her head, but seems to derive pleasure from this. Somehow (VO_Space_SQ_Solve_Lock: “… Aligning trajectory… Calculating force… And… catch!”, VO_Space_SQ_Computer_Press_X_Buttons_Cover_Safe: “Automatic computer? Agh… Who wouldn’t want to do their own computing?”)
Speaking of computers, she seems to have a disaffinity towards them, and potentially even struggles to use them (VO_Space_SQ_Computer_Press_X_Buttons_Cover_Blown_01: “The security on these new computing machines is horrendous… I’m sure future generations will solve this issue.”, VO_Space_SQ_Zbox_Unlocked_01: “Gah-! I knew people wouldn’t take Z-Mail security seriously.”, VO_Space_SQ_Computer_Press_X_Buttons_Cover_Blown_03: “Tsk, tsk, tsk… You should really enjoy the view instead of staring at that screen so much.”)
She seems to hold great importance on the thought of how technology will evolve and impact the future, both in general (in regards to the aforementioned computer quote), as well as in relation to the Death Engine specifically (VO_Space_SQ_Post_Controller_Banter_01: “Destroying this station will set humanity back generations of scientific progress!”)
As ecstatic as the Death Engine makes her, Solaris will make a habit of cutting herself off upon getting too excited, composing her reaction while the Agent is overhearing (VO_Space_SQ_Admire_DE_04: “Yes… Yes, YES!” [Excited cackling] “... Ahem… Yes.”, VO_Space_SQ_Admire_DE_06: “ZAP!” [Excited cackling] “... Ahem.”). It is unclear if she does this to save face, to maintain a professional appearance to her assistant, or for some other reasaon

thinking about louis and claudia as motherdaughter fucks me uppppp... what if you were the only person who looked like me and i watched you as you couldn't turn away from the person whose blood poisoned me and i would do anything to escape the same fate
no literally I think a lot abt how what happened to louis is claudia's worst nightmare and also it happened to claudia. and how to her lestat is bruce and the love he had for louis is the same as the love bruce had for her which is like loving a caged bird bc only you can make it sing. like its not an analogy of treatment lestat to her is literally louis' bruce the first person he found after escape from home that turned on him and kept him captive and fucked him up by making it about love. she understands the love louis has for her and the pragmatism he clutches tight to his chest so she becomes the dreamer for them both because she's not shackled by that love anymore she doesn't, for a short time, have to deal with the compromise of desire and duty that marriage inevitably places in louis' hands and heart. she saves her mother she finds a companion on her own terms she really learns from everything louis does w a determination born of past punishment. only with madeleine can she let go of the need to turn her gaze into lasers bc this is the x....again. for a short time. bc the friction of romantic negotiation comes for her the way he comes for all women the way it came for louis ! thinking abt how she wants to leave with him over and over but he stays because 1. he can never stop seeing her as someone he needs to protect 2. he never consults her abt decisions he makes for her safety and 3. he sees his own agency as a bargaining tool he'll give up his freedom for hers......it's just so sickening . and i hate how the trajectory of his relationship w grace foreshadows that of claudia. always loomed over by the patriarch....what if you were the person i loved most in the world but could never stay with bc the same blood that flows like fire through my veins turns to ice in yours. and bc we need to have each other too much to be allowed to want to have each other

Why Do We Love to "Hate" the Unlikable Female Heroine? | A Discussion About Every Reader's Favorite Guilty Pleasure
To read more posts like this, visit my blog: https://newbookcatsreads.blogspot.com/
A reader's favorite guilty pleasure is assuming that the sharp wits, scathing remarks, and morally questionable actions of fictional characters are aimed directly at us. These books we have associated as our safety nets do anything to catch us during jarring experiences and the emotional turmoil that typically follows.
For instance, every time I revisit Cassandra Clare's The Infernal Devices trilogy where she showcases a love triangle with only right angles, I consistently brace myself from Will Herondale's cold remarks veiling his (obvious) affection for Tessa Gray and any cruel schemes completed by Jessamine, Nathan, Magister or other villains--not that the Magister's manipulation of his soul-fueled robot army sucks away any remorse I have toward his sorrowful past lending to his desires for revenge against Shadowhunters. Still, their flaws feel personal, their choices oddly intimate, and somehow, their imperfection makes the story better.
Moreover, despite the immediate hatred we are expected to feel for villains and their callous schemes, there are surprisingly many literature heroines widely disliked by readers--and by extension, the family members of said readers who have to listen to thorough dissections of the heroine's role in the story and cry spells resulting from the heroine's ultimate sacrifice to rescue their loved ones from poisoned cake.
Tumblr media
And, while Joey undeniably reflects every reader in this scenario, I would also like to express how not-sorry I am for my past and future actions regarding my favorite novels and character.
Still, this begs the question: why do we love to hate these unlikable heroines, particularly the sharp-tongued, self-centered, and sometimes just plain mean ones that somehow steal the spotlight and keep us turning the pages until the night turns into day?
Warning: All of the declarations written by me and featured on this blog are my opinions. I'm an amateur literature dissectionist; further, I barely know how to write a story without one or many plot holes. Please respect my opinions. Moreover, if you share an opinion in the comments, I will respect your takes--even the burning hot ones--regardless of how I personally stand on an issue. If you come across a statement that you have an issue with, I highly recommend for you to consult your local librarian or book club to discuss incidental symptoms of hotheadedness, insomnia, snarky comments, frequent book hangovers, and possible death. This post is not recommended as book therapy or associated treatment for people with high prevalence of the above symptoms, and it is recommended for all readers to proceed and share at their own risk. Thank you!
First, let’s address societal expectations. Women in fiction are often expected to be likable, relatable, or at the very least, redeemable. For example, Sansa Stark from George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones is everything expected of a young woman readied to marry the heir to the Seven Kingdoms: obedient, soft-spoken, and well-mannered albeit a rare occurrence of sass reserved for her siblings. However, throughout a series of torturous character-defining moments as Martin's story progresses, Sansa transforms into a woman that readers strongly admire yet fear. Strong-willed, resilient, and loyal in favor of Daenerys and her brother Jon's resistance against the presently-ruling Lannister family, she earns both fans and enemies; however, her power-hungry tendencies and ambitious attitude show another complexity to her character--even allowing readers to outspokenly crave a downfall in her plans.
Another instance would be when Celeste in Kiera Cass’s The Selection series is painted as the vain and ruthless "mean girl" who is laser-focused on attaining Prince Maxon's heart and the deeply coveted title as Queen of Illéa. But as the trilogy progresses, Celeste surprises readers by risking her life to protect Maxon and America, her competitor. Slowly through the trilogy, her vulnerabilities are revealed, suddenly transforming her from a villain we loved to hate to someone we grudgingly admire. Similarly, Nina Zenik from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows is introduced as unapologetically brash and self-assured. Despite included as a protagonist of the story, she undeniably embodies traits that readers often find polarizing, making her a magnet for both admiration and critique from readers. These are classic cases of an unlikable heroine being redeemed by layers of complexity and growth.
Meanwhile, male characters, can brood, break hearts, and make all kinds of morally questionable choices while still being applauded as society's next "bookish boyfriend" and excused as “complicated” or “nuanced.” So when an author drops an unlikable female heroine into our laps, she feels refreshing.
But here’s the thing: unlikable heroines reflect real women. Not everyone is a people-pleaser or a cinnamon roll who always says the right thing at the right time. And, let’s be honest, who wants to be?
Unlikable heroines challenge the idea that women must be palatable to be worthy of storytelling. Instead, they showcase flaws in ways that resonate with readers who might see themselves in the unfiltered messiness.
Take, for instance, Cersei Lannister from Martin's Game of Thrones. Yes, despite not being a heroine, Cersei's story is a masterclass in making readers simultaneously love and hate a character. Her snark, cruelty, and morally questionable choices make her divisive. Yet, when her full intentions of keeping her family, especially her children, not only safe but alive in the midst of a dragon-led rebellion are revealed, many readers, especially those who are mothers or caretakers of a family member, suddenly see her in a new light. Still, this begs us to consider if Cersei as a bitter, vengeful, yet deeply loyal woman deserves a redemption arc or if she is irredeemable and should be punished with more than just rotten tomatoes.
Moreover, there’s a fine line between flawed and unbearable. When done well, unlikable heroines make us question our own biases.
Why does her ambition feel “too much” to me? Am I uncomfortable with her choices because they’re immoral or because they challenge societal norms?
But when done poorly, these characters turn into nothing more than plot devices for shock value or an author’s attempt at forced edginess, becoming caricatures overdressed in universally condemned values and unlikeable personality traits. For example, Storee from Megan Quinn’s How My Neighbor Stole Christmas is a prime example of this. On the surface level, she is quirky and sarcastic, traits that easily evoke adoration. But after further reading and analysis, her incessant snark crosses into grating territory, leaving some readers (ahem, me) rolling their eyes more than rooting for her. It’s a balancing act, and when that balance is off, even the most forgiving audience may find themselves not finishing that supposed "feel-good" story in lieu of reaching for another one.
Tumblr media
Still, I believe unlikable heroines have a place on our shelves. They force us to engage critically with our stories, question our assumptions, and maybe even confront our own unlikable traits. Moreover, as I have matured and been exposed to more complex pieces or stories including advanced topics, I have come to enjoy reading about morally gray protagonists--even so far as looking forward to their written presence. Albeit their misunderstood pasts or questionable intentions within their fictional universes, it is refreshing to encounter characters who are neither strictly virtuous or are perpetually untarnished by faults or temptations.
Albeit not a female heroine, it's refreshing to consider that even the holiest figure of them all, Jesus, in the Bible was admittedly tempted by the devil several times throughout His life and during His preparations. Moreover, He questioned His purpose and final sacrifice. These situations and similar ones dispersed throughout the Bible remind readers that absolute perfection is unattainable for anyone...even for the son of a deity.
And, returning to non-biblical figures, morally gray characters resonate with audiences, when written correctly, because they reflect this messy, intricate reality of humanity that is complicated, often selfish, and undeniably flawed. Everyday, we face that perfection is strictly an illusion, and these characters remind us that these slight imperfections can be captivating, successfully driving a story forward and establishing a character as a timeless literary figure and, oftentimes, an inspiration for others. The complexities of these characters not only challenge us to question our own moral compass but to find empathy in the most unexpected places. And, that includes the countless number of family members and friends I entrusted to hear my most vulnerable thoughts about these characters.
And on a higher note, these characters are fun to include in thoughtful debates and deep philosophical discussions when it comes to values and beliefs--and who doesn’t love a good bookish debate with both readers and non-readers alike?
So, what’s your take? Are unlikable heroines misunderstood gems or literary landmines? Albeit YOUR literal perfection, which characters or literary scenes encouraged you to reflect on your own morals or biases? Is it possible for these unlikable heroines (like Cersei Lannister) to earn redemption from readers, or what are some common traits and actions that make this option widely opposable (such as in the case of the Magister)? Leave your hot takes below (bonus points if you can name a heroine you loved and hated at the same time). Let’s keep this discussion spicy--just like our favorite morally gray protagonists--in the comments below or via my social media accounts.
Love,
Nicole

Another Time (Chapter 11/14)
ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT NINE TEN
Summary: Jake wakes up in Rooster's body ~30 hours post-Mission and they have to deal with it. They're adults. Apparently.
(Posting on Tumblr, chapter a day until it's complete (currently 14 chapters already written), after it's complete I will post it on AO3 once a day until it's completed there as well).
Odd chapter = Jake POV, Even chapter = Bradley POV
ELEVEN
Jake’s never been shaved by anyone before, and he hadn’t thought that Rooster was going to do the whole thing, but apparently that’s the treatment he’s getting. Given some privacy while he uses the bathroom and has a quick shower using a crutch to maintain balance he looks at the offending ankle and it looks… less swollen. That’s a good sign. He doesn’t waste time, is perfunctory and tries not to think about the fact that he’s running his hands all over Rooster’s body. Another time he tells himself mentally.
Stepping out of the shower he isn’t surprised to find Rooster waiting for him, holding out a towel. He’s also placed a pile of his own clothes, including his service khakis, on the sink and he accepts the help getting dressed in silence. Rooster fastens the moonboot over the pants but stops him from putting his shirt on, directing him to sit on a chair he’s brought in from the other room.
                “You do this often?”
“Often enough. Sit your ass down and put that foot up.”
Jake gives a sarcastic little salute and Rooster responds with the middle finger but he does as he’s told and settles himself, can see their reflections in the mirror. Seeing his body and his reflection is another level of weirdness he hadn’t expected. Then Rooster is wrapping his face in a warm wet towel and Jake lets out a quick breath. Trust right? Okay. He’s got this. The towel comes off after only a minute or so and then Rooster is rubbing his face with something that smells like coconut oil and he quirks up an eyebrow, can’t resist.
                “Lubing me up Bradshaw?”
                “Another time…”
                “That better be a promise.”
                “You know it…”
Then there’s a fucking brush, lather on his face and he wants to make a comment about Rooster being a grandpa but he’s feeling tight and hot, aware that all of Rooster’s attention is on him with laser focus and it’s a huge fucking turn on is what it is. His eyes drop closed and he lets himself just feel, the almost too-gentle swipe of the razor down his face, the sound as it’s rinsed off, then repeated.
It’s quiet and methodical. Soothing. And far more erotic than he ever thought shaving could be. He can feel the heat between their bodies as Rooster stands close. Then his face is being wrapped in the warm wet towel, more oil and he’s half-hard. This surely has to be a him thing and not a response Rooster has to shaving himself. The razor goes in the opposite direction now, and he feels fingers brush over the scars on Rooster’s cheek and neck, checking for smoothness he guesses and he swallows, wants, needs, to break the silence.
“How did you get those anyway?”
“Uh. I don’t think now is a good time to tell you…”
                “What do you mean?”
“Uh, if I say I got them shaving…”
“What? You cut yourself that badly? How?”
“I was using a straight edge razor.”
“Uh. You’re not using a straight edge razor now?”
“No, I’m using a safety. Stop being a dick.”
Jake gives him a wink, because this bickering between them feels good in a gentler way than their previous interactions. He wants more of it.
                “How old were you?”
“Not old enough to actually be shaving, think I was ten or eleven. Mom and Mav freaked. There was a lot of blood.”
His face is being rinsed with a very cool wet cloth and it feels refreshing after all the warmth, there’s some lotion and then a dry towel patting his face. Then Rooster is wielding a comb in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other, staring at him intently.
                “Don’t move or talk…”
He swallows, doesn’t even nod, feels the teeth of the comb through the moustache and then the cool metal of the scissors press against his upper lip, the sound of the blades rasping against each other loud in his ears and the snipping sound of little bits of hair being cut. His nose feels itchy and he resists the urge to twitch. There’s nothing else for him to do except close his eyes and let himself feel. He feels cared for. Cherished in a way he’s never been before, not from anyone outside his family.
                “There… back to respectable levels.”
He opens his eyes and moves his lips experimentally and it does feel much better, no prickly bits digging into the corner. Definitely an improvement.
“I’ll have to do your hair if we’re talking about looking respectable.”
“Sure thing, I tried yesterday but…” he shrugs and Jake reaches for his hand, tugs him close.
                “You looked good.”
“Of course you think that. I’m in your body.”
Jake shrugs, because that’s not what he means but Rooster can take it that way. He’s always admired Rooster’s easy level of confidence, even when they were each other’s throats. Jake isn’t shy, knows his own worth, but he doesn’t feel like he oozes confidence in quite the same way that Rooster does. He’d seen the difference yesterday, and the fact that Bob had instantly known just confirms it for him.
“Okay, you’re all done. Now I need to shower and you can tell me what you do with your hair to make it look all…”
“Perfect?” Jake asks with a grin and laughs at Rooster’s eye roll.
He pulls on the uniform shirt and uses the crutches to get back to the bedroom, leaves Rooster to shower, which he does quickly enough that Jake is still standing in the bedroom balancing with the crutches and looking at the one shelf of the bookcase that isn’t just books. There’s a photo of Rooster’s parents on what must be their wedding, and then another with a very young Rooster and it hits him then just how young Rooster must have been when his dad died. Fuck he’s an asshole sometimes.
“You finally coherent enough to be nosy huh?” Rooster asks, and he’s wearing underwear and nothing else, rubbing his hair dry and Jake pulls a face. Pat dry he thinks, pat, not rub.
                “You were a cute kid…”
“You mean I’m not cute now?”
“Aged like fine bourbon,” he says, and he means it. Suddenly and deeply he wants Rooster to know, that he’s sorry for being an asshole before, that he likes him, that he wants to try spending the rest of his life with him. Because the idea of not makes something within him clench with the same fear he’d felt when he’d heard Dagger 2 is hit and then the fear again as he’d pushed and pushed his jet to reach him, not enough time to do anything except think about seeing him alive alive alive.
“I’m sorry for bringing up your dad. It was an asshole move.”
“Yeah, it was. But also if we’re apologizing for being assholes then I need to apologize about saying you’d lead everyone into an early grave. You know I don’t actually think that right?”
Jake shrugs, because he knows in training simulations he’s got a reputation, but he’s never done it in actuality. But he guesses it doesn’t help people trust him when they can’t know that he wouldn’t ever risk their lives. He huffs quietly, realizing that it’s the whole reason they train so incessantly, to just be able to respond and he guesses if his first response in training is always to think of himself first then maybe he’s more deserving of his callsign than he thought. Maybe that’ll change now. The Navy rumor mill is a ferocious and unsatiable beast.
“Jake. You’re a good pilot. Still an asshole, but that doesn’t stop me… liking you. In fact I kind of like that bit more than I probably should. In the, uh, interest of being open and honest.”
                “Fucking couples therapy…”
                “Yeah.”
“I like your asshole self as well,” Jake states and then swallows, his throat tight. “When I heard that you’d been hit I don’t think I’ve ever been so terrified in my life and I didn’t, still don’t really, know how to, uh, process all that. If we’re being open and honest.”
“I don’t think we’re meant to have processed it yet. I sure as fuck haven’t. God. We’ve still got to get through the debrief. Mav is being evasive as fuck and I just…”
                “Come here…”
                “What?”
“We’re going to hug Bradshaw, come here.”
Rooster laughs but steps close and Jake lets him take some of his weight and the job of keeping him balanced, drops the crutches and wraps his arms around Rooster’s chest and holds tight, tries to convey that he’s there, for everything, because he thought that someone had died. Rooster though is dealing with the fact that he probably thought Mav had died, and then was probably pretty sure he was going to die himself and yeah okay, they’re both pretty fucked up.
                “You give good hugs.”
“I’m good at everything Rooster, you should know that by now.”
“Mmm. I look forward to finding out.”
“I look forward to showing you… although, do you not have clothes?”
                “You’re wearing them.”
“Ha ha. Javy brought my bag. Come on man, I have a reputation to maintain.”
                “Yeah you do…”
The kiss is sudden, harder than any of their previous gentle brushes of lips and he digs his fingers into the bare skin of Rooster’s back, holding him tightly, his balance a little unsteady as Bradley shifts against him and wraps an arm around Jake’s waist. A hand through his hair and there are fingernails scraping over his scalp and it sends little zinging jolts down his spine and he groans, pushes himself against Bradley and slides his tongue against his lips, catches Bradley’s bottom lip between his teeth and tugs slightly; savors the grunt and roll of hips. God. He feels so good pressed against him and he sucks in a lungful of air and pulls away, leaving his hands on bare skin, thumbs rubbing soft circles.
“We are going to have a lot of fun with the later darlin’,” Jake says, and he means it as a promise, hopes Bradley takes it as one.
                “Fucking hell…”
Jake chuckles and makes a grabby hand motion for the crutches, which Rooster obediently retrieves for him from the floor.
“I’m going to find clothes, you go out and help yourself to whatever breakfast you want. I’m also going to bravely go and try and wake Phoenix.”
“You going to do that in your underwear?”
                “Uh, yeah. Good point. No.”
He watches Bradley go off in search of clothes, his duffel actually in the bedroom all along and he worries for a second about Rooster finding something that he might be embarrassed about before realizing that there isn’t anything. He makes his way to the kitchen slowly, navigating the furniture easily enough. The ankle is sore, but the pain isn’t so intense anymore, which he’s relieved about. He can hear Rooster talking softly to Phoenix, her louder grumpier words in reply and he wonders if she’s hungover or just not a morning person. When she comes out to the kitchen he quickly decides that it may in fact be both and he shares a slightly worried look with Rooster before realizing that she doesn’t hate him as much as she used to so he might actually be safe. Rooster is putting cereal into a bowl and sliding it over to her, along the milk. He’s pressing buttons on the coffee maker and Jake likes watching him be all… domestic.
“Raisin bran? I’m not Mav,” Phoenix grumbles, poking at the bowl.
“It’s that or nothing. Coffee is coming.”
“No… why can’t you make me another omelet? Or pancakes?”
“Because. Eat the damned raisin bran Nat.”
Jake eats his bowl with a quirk of his lips, not brave enough to make any comment and not quite willing to test his theory that Rooster would make him something if he just asked.

"Manufacturing Processes Used by Mild Steel Dowel Bars Manufacturers in Sweden"
INTRODUCTION
Tumblr media
Mild steel dowel bars are indispensable in the construction industry, especially for enhancing the durability and stability of concrete structures. Known for their exceptional strength and adaptability, these bars play a crucial role in ensuring efficient load transfer across joints in pavements, slabs, and other structural applications. This article explores the intricate manufacturing processes employed by Mild Steel Dowel Bars Manufacturers in Sweden, focusing on precision, quality, and innovation.
1. Raw Material Selection
The manufacturing process begins with selecting high-quality mild steel, known for its optimal balance of strength and ductility. Manufacturers in Sweden adhere to stringent quality standards to ensure that the raw material meets the requirements for construction-grade dowel bars.
2. Cutting and Sizing
Once the raw mild steel is procured, it is cut into specific lengths based on the application requirements. Precision cutting ensures uniformity, which is essential for effective load transfer and durability in concrete structures. Advanced cutting tools, including laser and hydraulic cutters, are often used to achieve accuracy.
3. Surface Preparation
Surface preparation is a vital step in the manufacturing process. The steel is cleaned to remove impurities, such as rust, grease, or mill scale, that may affect its bonding with concrete or its durability. Abrasive blasting or chemical treatments are commonly used for thorough cleaning.
4. Heat Treatment for Strength Enhancement
To enhance the mechanical properties of mild steel, manufacturers employ heat treatment techniques. This process improves the tensile strength and resilience of the bars, making them suitable for high-stress applications. Controlled heating and cooling cycles ensure uniformity and consistent quality.
5. Corrosion-Resistance Coating
Mild steel is susceptible to corrosion, especially in harsh weather conditions or when exposed to moisture. To mitigate this, manufacturers in Sweden apply protective coatings, such as epoxy or galvanization. These coatings not only extend the lifespan of the dowel bars but also ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards.
6. Straightening and Finishing
After heat treatment and coating, the bars are straightened to ensure they meet precise alignment specifications. Advanced machinery is used for this step, eliminating any deformations and achieving a smooth, uniform surface.
7. Quality Inspection and Testing
Quality assurance is a cornerstone of the manufacturing process. Mild Steel Dowel Bars Manufacturers in Sweden conduct rigorous testing to ensure that the bars meet international construction standards. Key tests include tensile strength analysis, corrosion resistance evaluation, and dimensional accuracy checks.
8. Packaging and Distribution
Once the dowel bars pass all quality checks, they are packaged using materials that protect them during transportation and storage. Proper labeling and documentation ensure that the bars reach their destination with traceability and compliance intact.
Advantages of Swedish Manufacturing Processes
Precision Engineering: Swedish manufacturers utilize advanced machinery and technology to achieve unmatched precision in dowel bar production.
Sustainability Practices: The focus on eco-friendly methods, such as recycling and reducing waste, aligns with Sweden's commitment to sustainability.
Compliance with Global Standards: By adhering to stringent international construction norms, Swedish manufacturers ensure that their products are recognized worldwide for quality and reliability.
Conclusion
The meticulous manufacturing processes employed by Mild Steel Dowel Bars Manufacturers in Sweden highlight their dedication to quality and innovation. From raw material selection to final packaging, each step ensures that the dowel bars are robust, durable, and suited for a wide range of construction applications. These processes set a benchmark for the global industry, making Sweden a leader in the production of high-quality mild steel dowel bars.

Understanding Laser Treatment: Fitzpatrick Skin Types and How Laser Energy Targets Melanin
Hello again! If you’ve been following my posts, you’re now familiar with the ins and outs of PCOS and laser-based hair reduction (LBHR). Today, we’ll go a bit deeper into the science behind LBHR. Don’t worry, the technical details like laser settings are for the professionals to handle! Howeverrr, understanding the basic principles of how laser treatments work can help you maximise your results. Not only does this knowledge empower you during your sessions, but it also reinforces the importance of sticking to your post-care routine to ensure the best possible outcome. Today, we’re specifically focusing on how lasers work with different skin types and why cooling methods during your laser session are essential to safe and effective treatment to keep the skin safe
Cooling Methods During Laser Treatment
Throughout your laser session, cooling may be applied either with a cold air attachment or a cooling gel. Both are crucial for minimising discomfort and preventing thermal (heat) damage to the skin. Erythema (redness) and perifollicular oedema (swelling around the hair follicles) are completely normal signs of effective treatment. In fact, we look for these indicators as confirmation that the laser energy has been adequately absorbed by the hair follicles, leading to the long-term reduction we’re after.
Cooling is a vital step during laser treatments, helping to reduce trapped heat in the treatment area and minimise discomfort. Whether through cold air attachments or cooling gel, this process helps protect the skin and prevent overheating. For those with darker skin types, clinical endpoints—such as redness or swelling—might be delayed due to the skin's color. This is why cooling is especially important to ensure safety and effectiveness during and after the session.
Understanding Skin Types: The Fitzpatrick Scale
When discussing laser treatments, we often refer to the Fitzpatrick Skin Type rating. This scale isn’t perfect, but it serves as a useful tool to gauge how someone’s skin might react to UV exposure. FST goes beyond just looking at your skin’s current appearance. It’s about how your skin responds to UV exposure, considering your ethnic background and potential to pigment.
For example, I grew up in the Middle East in a very hot climate and was deeply tanned as a child. Now, I have paler skin, but that doesn’t mean I can be treated using the same settings as someone with blonde hair and blue eyes who burns incredibly easily under the sun, or even someone from the same background as me who has much darker skin. Each of us reacts differently based on our skin’s potential to pigment.
This scale helps clinicians assess the safest treatment parameters, ensuring that each session is as effective and as safe as possible. While it touches on race, it’s important to understand that it’s not an exact measure—it’s more of an indicator to help guide treatments with both safety and efficacy in mind. This rating scale helps us determine which laser modality is safest and most effective for each person. The scale ranges from:
Type I: Very fair skin, always burns, never tans.
Type II: Fair skin, usually burns, tans minimally.
Type III: Medium skin, sometimes mild burns, tans gradually.
Type IV: Olive skin, rarely burns, tans well.
Type V: Brown skin, very rarely burns, tans deeply.
Type VI: Dark brown or black skin, never burns, tans very easily.

Laser Technology: Alexandrite and Nd:YAG
Different lasers are used depending on the patient's skin type. The Alexandrite laser is a go-to for lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick I-III). It operates at a wavelength of 755 nm, which targets the melanin in the hair follicle with great precision. However, this laser can pose a higher risk for hyperpigmentation or burns in darker skin types, which brings us to the Nd:YAG lasers.
The Nd:YAG laser, with a longer wavelength of 1064 nm, is ideal for darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV-VI). Its longer wavelength penetrates deeper into the skin and is less absorbed by the melanin in the epidermis, reducing the risk of skin damage while still targeting the melanin in the hair follicles. This is how we adequately treat deeper skin types

How Laser Energy Targets Hair Follicles
No matter the laser type, all hair reduction treatments function by targeting melanin, the pigment found in both hair and skin. Laser energy is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicle, heating it up and eventually destroying the follicle, preventing future hair growth. This process is called selective photothermolysis, a term that refers to the selective destruction of melanin in the hair while minimising damage to the surrounding skin.
Selective Photothermolysis: Protecting Darker Skin Types
For those with darker skin (higher on the Fitzpatrick scale), there’s understandably a concern about potential skin damage due to the presence of more melanin. But with selective photothermolysis, we can protect darker skin by using specific lasers like the Nd:YAG, which safely bypasses the melanin in the skin while still targeting the melanin in the hair follicle. This ensures effective treatment without causing harm to the surrounding tissue.
Laser hair reduction is a highly customisable treatment that needs to be adapted to your skin type for safe and effective results. The right cooling techniques, understanding your Fitzpatrick skin type, and choosing the correct laser modality are all essential to getting the best possible outcome—especially for those of us managing PCOS-related hair growth. Remember, whether you have light or dark skin, modern laser technology ensures that we can achieve long-term hair reduction safely.

For how little their imp forms appear in the demon/angel AU I sure like to draw them a ton and that’s because they’re gosh dang cute, Easy to draw, and fit into cat memes!!!!!
They’re just slightly more intelligent cats with apposable thumbs
more info under the read more
Imps
There are two different types of imps, and it can be hard to tell them apart sometimes
The first and most common form of an imp is a young demon, when they are new they tend to be small humanoid mischievous creatures who enjoy causing havoc,
overall they’re more of just a nuisance than an actual threat and can be easily dealt with if needed
The second form of an imp is a grown demon who has had their power suppressed
The best way to tell a young demon imp from an adult imp is by distinguishing features, young imps tend to be missing features that would make them stand out from others (tail spikes, specific horns, markings, colours, etc.)
This can be a band aid fix to deal with a demon if they are too powerful to exorcize
A grown imp is extremely durable,
in this form they may not have much power or magic but it’s also extremely unlikely you’d be able to kill the thing either.
Slice them to bits and they’ll just regenerate
Imps are unable to speak, tend to be relatively weak (strength wise), can hardly use any magic (if at all), and are normally around the size of a house cat
And by unable to speak I mean they can hiss, growl, chitter, natter, potentially purr and the like but they cannot form words
This also means that turning a demon into an imp is not useful if you are looking for information from them
Strong demons can turn lesser demons into imps temporarily as a display of power or if the demon is being annoying.
This does take a little bit of effort so it is unlikely a demon will just do it out of the blue
Demons can also turn themselves into imps as a safety measure, however; it’s not instant and they cannot control when they change back (normally after 1-2 days)
It's common for an adult imp to find a caretaker for themselves until they're back to normal, it's not necessary but is more comforting to the demon's little pea brain when they are vulnerable while sleeping (even if near impossible to kill)
If a Demon dies and is regenerated back at their pentagram they will be an imp if their energy was lost and they need to recuperate
Adult imps sleep a lot to regain energy to return to their normal form
They can be compared to cats with slightly higher intelligence and opposable thumbs (menaces)
In their imp forms they’re normally more mischievous and animalistic, like a young imp would be. They are basically stripped down to their bare bone instincts and personality.
A feisty demon might become more unbearable as an imp, a greedy one might start stealing and hoarding things they’ve found, a violent one may be very prone to attacking everything it sees, etc.
When a demon changes back after being an imp they can usually only remember bits and pieces, since they’re nearly feral cats it can be rather embarrassing or humiliating depending on what they did in pea brain mode
Angels naturally calm an adult imp as they are a being most likely to have done it in the first place. Adult imps are much more likely to behave themselves around an angel, fallen angels do not get the same treatment
Paisley Imp
Paisley is a little trouble maker, he likes to get into things he’s not supposed to and has an itch to set things on fire
You can stop him if you tell him not to, and if he knows he’s not supposed to you can catch him intently focused on something before he does it XD so it’s relatively easy to stop
If you do things with him though he can be pretty well behaved and easily wntertained since he is rather curious
Things like laser pointers, videos, and other cat/baby toys can entertain him
He’s active in short hyper-active bursts and then sleeps for a while before being hyper-active again
Rather warm to the touch, he’s probably pretty cozy to hold onto
He can set himself on fire and breathe it, even in his suppressed imp form. He’s not likely to do this but he might if he’s frustrated
The fire between his horns is harmless
Finley Imp
Finley is much calmer than Paisley for the most part
He’s more likely to be bothering his care-taker for affection than to be getting into things
Though that doesn’t mean he won’t get into things too
He’s highly likely to steal food, push things off ledges to get attention, and shred cardboard boxes
If you want him to stay out of things just let him cuddle you and you’re fine
Let him sit in your lap, ride on your shoulder, carry him, etc. and he won’t leave
Dwi Imp
A lot less feral than most imps
But highly likely to claw, bite, and use their tail as a whip if displeased
Don’t touch them, if they want something they’ll come to you sort of creature
They like to listen in to conversations and be brought out to simply watch, they don’t normally like to participate in things
They’re more likely to find somewhere private if they need to rest unless they’re alone with their care-taker then they might be willing to snuggle
They won’t normally get into anything that they wouldn’t need to, unless they’re doing it specifically to piss someone off
Most of their actions are out of spite rather than impulse
You could distract them with a fast moving toy, like a string toy or maybe a bug

Since I'm distracted by working on a fic, and I saw a somewhat similar AU in the Sonic au tag, I've decided to just go ahead and post about it...
Project Lightspeed (aka Wisp Sonic)
Note: I messed up on some of the color positions with the first drawing but there's another drawing that's more accurate!
Tumblr media
(Above picture is his modern design)
The second artificially made lifeform on the ARK, Project Lightspeed Sonic uses a combination of the Cyan Laser and Ivory Lightning Wisps that were forcefully infused to him to run at the incredible speeds he's able to reach.
He isn't actually aware that he'd been infused with the power of the Wisps or his origins in general until Sonic Adventure 2 happens. To say he react well to everything is kinda an understatement...
As for how he ends up on Earth and all that? Well first we need to establish a bit of background.
Peoject Lightspeed, as he was referred to on the ARK, didn't get the same treatment as Shadow. In fact his treatment was much worse. While he was also created with the help of Gerald his double purpose was different from Shadow's. As for why I say double purpose? Well there's the main purpose they're presented as and then there's GUN's true purpose for them.
Project Shadow's main purpose was presented as finding a cure for Maria, while GUN's true purpose was for him to be The Ultimate Lifeform.
Project Lightpseed's main purpose was presented as being able to quickly help people get to safety or to a hospital, while GUN's true purpose for him was to be an improved version of The Ultimate Lifeform. And this time they'd ensure everything they could to keep him away from Gerald's much too caring hands in an attempt to mold him to their liking.
While technically Sonic is more powerful than Shadow, he's unaware of certain abilities he possesses which makes it so when they fight they're on more equal footing. He can not only do everything Shadow can but better, but he's also got his own unique chaos abilities... that I still need to figure out.
Btw the reason he only has one inhibitor ring is because, due to secretly being an improved version of The Ultimate Lifeform, his energy is much more stable than Shadow's.
So due to how kindhearted Sonic is, their attempts to mold him to their liking made them very unhappy with him. He'd constantly get punished for not obeying their orders. Punishments started out as more grueling testing and hurting him. When that didn't work after a while they decided to try some different methods, eventually finding that submerging him in water was the most effective in getting him to do what they want. At that point the only thing he'd still try to refuse to do is kill.
The reason it was so effective is cause he's not only made up of mostly energy, but it so happens that one his main components is lightning. So combine those two things with the fact that water and electricity don't mix well? Well needless to say that constantly submerging him in it causes his hydrophobia to become extreme.
And then eventually the ARK raid happens...
Knowing he's likely going to die anyways and since he was in the general area, Gerald takes pity on Sonic and helps him escape. Sonic easily trusts him since he's one of the only people to not hurt him. Gerald does his best to escort him to one of the multiple escape pod zones, informing him of what he'll need to do if Gerald is unable to make it with him. Which is good since he doesn't. The way it happens is that he ends up having to stall some guards, subsequently resulting in his arrest.
Sonic makes it to the pods and manages to escape, but not before obtaining even more trauma. So much so that he ends up repressing his memories of the ARK in general.
Unfortunately the pod ends up malfunctiong because of Sonic's powers going on the fritz due to the stress of the situation. Speaking of stress, he manages to essentially short circuit himself and enters a self induced coma as his body tries to fix itself. It doesn't help that he's subconsciously using a fraction of his energy to power the pod's essentials. Most notably life support and stasis.
The pod ends up crashing into Westside Island, causing the locals to investigate. Locked from the inside and short circuited, the islanders are unable to open it or see inside. Eventually they give up and, being too heavy for them to move, wind up just making a scrapyard around the pod.
Fast forward a little less than 50 years when a certain two tailed fox comes across it while looking for some scrap to use. Curious as to what could be inside when he's unable to open it, he makes something to tow the pod to his shack and it ends up becoming his own little pet project.
One day, while the fox is out, the blue and yellow hedgehog in the pod finally wakes up.
The amnesiac stumbles his way out of the pod and falls onto the ground. And of course it's that moment the fox finally returns home.
And while the fox had no idea what to expect from the stranger, something he defientely wasn't expecting was for them to be terrified upon seeing him.
Tumblr media
(The red rings aren't inhibitors but rather cuffs that they used to help keep him in line aboard the ARK)
It takes a while for the currently nameless hedgehog to even think about trusting the fox. People meant bad things happen to him, even if he doesn't remember why. He ends up subconsciously curling into a ball and stays that way for a while, baffling the fox as to when he eats or drinks.
(They much later learn that he doesn't need to eat or drink as he's able to sustain himself with his own energy)
And while the hedgehog doesn't talk he eventually gives the fox a chance, who he'd nicknamed Tails in his head, and becomes overprotective over him. From there they slowly but surely come to view each other as brothers.

@delinquentsharlene (continued from here)
"...Calm down."
Lucy's curt order falls sharply from her frowning lips, but the Pike Queen works fast, her touch delicate as she carefully cradles Sharlene's gashed forearm for a fleeting examination.
There's blood everywhere, yet Lucy seems unfazed by the alley scene, her piercing vision laser-focused on the task at hand. Without hesitation, she removes one of her long gloves to deftly fashion a hasty tourniquet around the wound. Time is of the essence here, and her makeshift wrap would hold until better treatment could be administered--
But Sharlene's scared question gives the Pike Queen a moment of sympathetic pause. After all, it wasn't too long ago that she was in the delinquent's same shoes--left fending for herself on the edge of Lilycove proper, the grim specter of money constantly hanging over her head... (She knew this fear well. This seaside city becomes a lot scarier when you don't have a safety net.)
And so, Lucy offers Sharlene a choice, still steadying them as she rises fully to her feet.
"...It's a deep cut. Needs to be looked at properly. I know a place where money won't be an issue, but it's a little off the grid and you'll have to trust me. Or, I can just take you to the hospital."
She shrugs, impatiently blowing an errant hair out of her face.
"Whatever, just choose fast--we need to get going either way. Can you walk?"
