Ngā Tamatoa
Last night, as part of the I am Hana project, the first panel discussion of Ngā Tamatoa members took place at the TSB Showplace in New Plymouth, hosted by well known Māori TV presenter, Oriini Kaipara. The opening of the event was held mainly in te reo Māori, but morphed into mostly English with te reo Māori used on and off during the evening. It was later closed off in full te reo and…

0scardag 12 maart 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wellicht omdat het best fris was in mistig L.A.

Once Upon a Pixar (2026)
Hello. It's me, and this is the Pixar version of Once Upon a Studio called Once Upon a Pixar.
(The film opens with the headquarters at Pixar as the employees leave for the day.)
Pixar Intern: It's so incredible to think that George Lucas started Pixar back in 1979 until it was founded by Steve Jobs in 1986 40 years ago today. To think of all those talented animators and unforgettable characters who have been a part of the studio over the years.
Pete Docter: Yep. (as he and the intern turn around one last time) If the characters could talk to each other.
(Pete Docter and the intern leave as the door closes while the title comes up: "Once Upon a Pixar". The camera zooms into a photo picture of Woody, Jessie and Bullseye running on a record player. Woody glances back as everything seems quiet in the lobby.)
Woody: Psst! Atta. Princess Atta. You there?
(Princess Atta flies into the lobby and over to his picture.)
Woody: Is that it? They all gone?
Princess Atta: Yep, they're all gone.
Woody: Yee-haw! (he, Jessie and Bullseye leap out of the picture) Come on, Jessie, this is it.
Jessie: Let's get everyone. Yodel-ay-hee-hoo!
Joy: (gasps) There's the signal! All right, everyone! (she, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust jump out of their production cell) It's picture time!
Elio: That's tonight?
Joy: That's now.
Ember Lumen: The 40-year group photo. (she and Wade jump out of their production cell as well) And the sun's going down. Come on, Wade, let's feel the burn!
Wade: Ooh, a fire pun. (chuckles) Got to like that.
(Suddenly, Arlo and Spot come out of their production cell as Wade gasps and goes against the wall.)
Arlo: (chuckles nervously) Sorry.
Woody: Picture time, gang!
Mei Lee: (chuckles) Okay, here we come!
(Mei Lee, Miriam, Abby, Priya and Tyler jump out of their production cell while they laugh.)
Abby: Wake up, everyone!
(The Oozma Kappa come out of their production cell as Squishy yells while Russell, Carl and Dug walk down the hallway.)
Russell: Whoa!
Dug: Awesome!
Russell: Oh, Mr. Lightyear! Get the folks upstairs!
Buzz Lightyear: Roger that, Russell. To infinity and beyond!
(Buzz Lightyear flies upstairs as Lightning McQueen drives happily down the hall with Mater.)
Mater: Yee-haw!
Merida: (jumps out of her production cell) It's picture time! (runs to the lobby) We're meeting at the lobby!
Flik: Okay! See you there!
(Miguel Rivera and Riley Andersen ride on Dim as Dim flies to the lobby.)
Miguel Rivera: (hollers)
(Francis gives a fun ride to Dash Parr.)
Dash Parr: Whoa! Higher! (laughs)
(Francis chuckles as Remy and Emile slide down the stairs as Luca Paguro lands on the floor and sighs as he catches Nemo.)
Nemo: Water.
Luca Paguro: (shudders and rushes to the counter)
P.T. Flea: No, no, no, there's no time for snacks!
Luca Paguro: Uh, Andy! A little help here?
Andy Davis: Oh, uh, let me see here. There we go, a nice bucket of water.
(Luca Paguro dunks Nemo to a bucket of water.)
Nemo: (grunts)
Linguini: (chuckles) Oh, waiter! There's a fish in the bucket! (laughs)
(Ernesto de la Cruz tries to get candy from the vending machine while he curses in Spanish as Mr. Incredible and Frozone walk down the hall.)
Mr. Incredible: Yikes! Do you think all the villains might catch up?
Frozone: Hmm. (freezes Syndrome in his frame) Not all.
Syndrome: (strains)
(Rex goes to the elevator with Imelda Rivera, Manticore, Ian, Barley and Laurel Lightfoot.)
Imelda Rivera: Going down?
Roz: Hold the elevator. I'm going to the lobby.
Rex: Huh? Oh, you've got to be joking.
(Joe Gardner hums to "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" while he draws Hector Rivera.)
Brook Ripple: Hey, black man. Shake a leg, will ya?
Joe Gardner: The leg won't make a difference, it's all in the wrist.
(Hector Rivera bursts out of the drawing as Joe Gardner shrieks in surprise.)
Hector Rivera: Ay! I haven't seen a fall like that since Spain. (fixes the chair) Oh! Much better.
(At the men's room, Hopper, 4*Town and Chef Skinner freshen up as Chef Skinner blows a kiss and chuckles. Suddenly, Tuck and Roll appear in front of his eyes, laughing, as Jessie opens the door.)
Jessie: Let's move it, gentlemen!
(While Lorenzo Paguro tries to free his wife Daniela Paguro from her picture, Giulia Marcovaldo walk with Buster, Mr. Mittens, Larry and Machivelli.)
Giulia Marcovaldo: Uh-huh. Meeting at the lobby. Don't eat the rats.
(Scud tries to eat Remy and Emile but Dante pops up and scares Scud away, thus saving the rats' lives. While Izzy and her team walk by, Mei Lee and her friends watch a cartoon on a TV.)
Izzy Hawthorne: Come on, everyone, you're gonna have nightmares.
(Zurg pops out of the TV and scares Mei Lee and her friends away, laughing. Back at the elevator, Roz makes it in time.)
Roz: Thanks very much for holding the elevator.
Rex: (groans)
Evelyn Deavor: I'm also going to the lobby as well.
Rex: Huh? Oh, come on!
(While M-O is being followed and annoyed by Dot, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson follow down the stairs, where Mr. Anderson is the one to drop his wallet and they laugh. Buster picks up the wallet and runs off with it.)
Mr. Anderson: Hey, Buster! Andy, get your dog!
(Woody follows up the stairs as he looks amused when he sees Underminer leading Colette Tatou with his hypnosis watch.)
Woody: Underminer? Underminer! You-- You stop that now, Underminer!
Rosie: Don't worry, Woody. (chuckles) I got this.
(Rosie hits Underminer offscreen unconsciously.)
Woody: Huh. (gasps) Wow.
(Woody looks up at photographs of John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich and Joe Ranft while he takes his hat off.)
Buzz Lightyear: Oh, Woody, where are you? We're at the lobby!
Woody: (chuckles) Got to go, but thanks. (puts his hat back on) On with the show.
(At the lobby, Woody rides on WALL-E with a fire extinguisher)
Woody: Yee-haw!
Mike Wazowski: Coast is clear, Sheriff.
Woody: Great! (holds the door open) Right this way, everybody.
(Sulley bumps into the door.)
Woody: Oh! Sulley, are you okay?
James P. Sullivan: (grunts) Never better, Eastwood. (accidentally trips the trash can)
Stinky Pete: I knew I'm surrounded by... (gets startled by Slim who rides on EVE) Idiots!
Slim: Tallyho! Whee! I'll show you the world! (laughs)
Woody: Oh, great, the ladder.
(Buzz sets the ladder while he hums.)
Mr. Dicker: Every time it gets hard. Money, money, money.
Woody: All right, everyone. Get-- Get together now. (to Tinny) Oh. After you, Tinny.
Emile: Oh. Pardon me.
Francis: (holds up a camera) Here's the camera, Lightyear.
Buzz Lightyear: (takes a camera and chuckles) Thanks, Francis. (climbs up the ladder)
Woody: Buzz, be careful!
Buzz Lightyear: (makes it to the top) All right, now where's the timer button?
Molt: Oh, oh! Three, two, one! (Randall Boggs grins)
(Buzz accidentally falls off while he screams and breaks the camera. As Buster walks to the broken camera, Buzz recognizes it.)
Andy Davis: Come on, Buster. (Buster runs back to Andy)
Buzz Lightyear: Huh? Oh, no. It's ruined.
Anger: Well, that was fun!
Sadness: Maybe we can try again in another forty years.
(The characters sigh disappointedly and are about to leave.)
Woody: Oh, no, no, wait. Come back. It-- It-- It'll be fine. It'll be...
(Just as the characters are about to leave, Randy Newman appears from nowhere while he plays "You've Got a Friend in Me" on piano with his orchestra.)
Randy Newman: ♪ You've got a friend in me ♪

Well, I think this is the transcript. I hope you like it. I also hope Pixar does a new short film like Once Upon a Studio did. Have a Happy New Year.

I remember the first time I saw Pryde of the X-Men. My parents bought me a copy of it from the local K-Mart and because they knew I liked the Fox Kids cartoon, even if it was too loud and aggressive at times. I could tell they weren’t the same thing just by looking at the cover, but that just made me even more curious about the whole thing. When I popped it in the VCR, I was treated to a highly charged 20-something minutes that I wish could have stretched on indefinitely. Everything about the special is exciting, right down to the theme song, which got stuck in my head more often than its iconic cousin (the fact that it had lyrics probably helped).
If there’s any such thing as a “kitchen sink pilot, this would be it. There are so many characters, concepts, themes, settings and dynamics introduced in such a compressed amount of time that it’s pretty damn impressive how its writer Larry Parr was able to pull it off...

I was thinking about how people have said the Six Idiots should do Six the musical, then I was thinking how beautifully chaotic it would be if they sang Haus of Holbein
And then my brain just said “Kendall the jeweller should sing Haus of Holbein” and now I need this to happen Larry please

Work It Out – Baxtop
Super slick, super funky and, well, just plain super. Recorded back in 1979 for Baxtop’s solitary album ‘Work It Out’, ‘JoBangles’ features some superb guitar and vocals from Larry Amos and is perhaps one of the most accomplished songs ever made in South Africa. Still sounding as fresh and as exciting as it did way back then, it still amazes me that this song was not huge.

SCUMB stands for Society for Cutting Up Men’s Books, which is exactly what Kurland has done, dismembering and reconfiguring images from around 150 photobooks by white, male photographers. All of the books were from Kurland’s own shelves. They include Stephen Shore’s American Surfaces, William Eggleston’s Los Alamos, Larry Clark’s Tulsa, Martin Parr’s Think of England, Alec Soth’s Sleeping By the Mississippi, Brassaï’s Paris By Night and, most famous of all, Robert Frank’s The Americans. Each collage is named after the book that provided the raw material for it, but does not refer to the photographer in question. Before exhibiting 65 of the SCUMB collages in a Brooklyn gallery last year, Kurland offered each of them to the individual photographers whose work she had cut up and reassembled. “I sent out emails saying, ‘I’ve been making collages out of photobooks and here’s yours’,” she says, laughing over the phone from her studio in New York. Most of them did not respond. Of those who did, she tells me, Tod Papageorge said he was flattered, Stephen Shore offered to do a trade for a print and Jim Goldberg sent her a copy of his book Raised By Wolves, to use as raw material, but, she says, “some others had less of a sense of humour and were offended by the work”.

"It Came from Beneath the Sewers"
Tumblr media
Season 2, Episode 3
First US Airdate: October 15, 1988 First UK Airdate (TMHT version): January 17, 1990
Shredder & Baxter unleash a mutated alien plant upon the Turtles.
Last time on Turtlethon, the Eye of Sarnath arc got off to a shaky start with our heroes getting downsized in "The Incredible Shrinking Turtles". Larry Parr is the credited writer again here, and the story continues with the Turtles in pursuit of the alien crystal's fragments.
Tumblr media
April is excited at the prospect of covering proof of actual interplanetary life, but for the time being she can't report on any of it as the Turtles can't risk anyone else finding out about the Eye of Sarnath. Rest assured she will have many, many chances to do so in the future, as extra-terrestrial creatures showing up in New York and raising hell is going to be a major recurring theme next season.
Tumblr media
The tracker provided by the dying alien in the last episode guides the Turtles to a fairground. When April points out they're being incredibly nonchalant about just walking into this crowded location with no disguises, the Turtles respond flippantly, assuring her that everyone will think they're part of the sideshow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Krang has summoned Shredder to Dimension X to examine the crystal fragment he obtained in the last episode. An unusually sheepish Saki explains that it has since been lost, before angrily blaming Baxter. It seems highly implausible that Shredder would let this supposed source of so much power out of his sight, never mind entrust it to Baxter, but let's continue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Krang quickly produces a printout of the fragment's whereabouts, before burying Shredder so brutally that even the Mirage comic Turtles are jealous.
Tumblr media
Back at the carnival, we get a long string of the kind of "fish out of water" gags where people are alarmed, angered or confused at the sight of the Turtles that are quickly becoming a mainstay of this show. These are counterbalanced with all the fairground humour you might expect, including an extended sequence of Michelangelo winning stuffed toys from a ball game with the use of his nunchucks that was never, ever going to make it into the Hero Turtles version. In fact, there's a lot of weapons use in this one that ended up being excised.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As it turns out, two small boys have found the fragment. When the Turtles realise this, Michelangelo is again ready to deploy his nunchucks. It's a minor miracle there was anything left of this episode to make it to BBC One at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Turtles get accosted by a guy who thinks they're circus performers who are late for work. Meanwhile, April tries to buy the crystal fragment from the kids, but they decline the offer.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then get a lengthy sequence of the Turtles pretending to be clowns, driving in via a car that shrinks, and pouring water on a plant that grows, before performing the same stunt on a ladder. It's all nonsensical but the Turtles are dawn in a very cutesy style through this portion of the episode, and it makes it difficult for me to actively dislike it.
Tumblr media
April turns to Michelangelo for extra funds to purchase the fragment from the two boys, but Shredder is already trying to nab it from them. In a sign of things to come, this supposed ninja master is easily defeated by a couple of small children.
At this point I would like to remind you that we are eight episodes into the 193-show run of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Shredder's time as a legitimate threat was so brief that it almost calls into question if he was ever really supposed to be a serious villain in this incarnation of TMNT at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Baxter makes good by catching the fragment when it goes flying, and the villainous duo escapes. Back at their abandoned warehouse hideout, they examine the alien artefact but an accident occurs thar causes it to come into contact with some slime on Shredder's boot - slime that he just happened to have trudged back with him during his earlier visit to Dimension X. (FUN FACT: Shredder's hideout is available to rent! Just call 555-6161)
The exposure of the sludge to the alien crystal causes it to grow rapidly. Shredder and Baxter soon realise the potential of this super spore, and plot to use it against our heroes.
Tumblr media
Back at the Lair, the Turtles are plotting their next move when the now giant plant smashes through the sewer walls. They quickly fight it off, sending it into retreat, but Splinter cautions that it's likely to return.
Tumblr media
Shredder and Baxter become frustrated at how long it's taking for the plant to travel through the sewers, and begin plotting a different course of action. Baxter has taken all the insults Shredder has levelled at him on the chin over the last few episodes, so it's interesting to see him getting visibly agitated here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
April and Irma are talking over coffee when there's a knock at the door. A letter has been left for April, purportedly from the Turtles, asking her to go to the aforementioned warehouse hideout. Without delay April heads to the premises, where she's tied up by the bad guys. Shredder goes through her purse and uses her communicator to contact the Turtles, which only further reinforces how baffling it is that ace reporter April O'Neil never thought to do so immediately upon receiving the letter.
Tumblr media
Shredder is delightful throughout the split-screen conversation that follows. He goads the Turtles into rescuing her. They soon determine they can't just burst into the building, given that Shredder is expecting them, and so...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...They dress up as a group of four pizza delivery guys. Shredder at least manages to get a decent one-liner out of it before...
Tumblr media
...The Turtles just burst in the door in their standard attire anyway. So that was pointless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A very brief fight scene unfolds before Shredder and Baxter escape, but the Turtles soon find another problem has arisen - in a very literal sense - as the mutant plant has burrowed up through the city streets and is now upturning and throwing around vehicles with wild abandon. Driving to the scene, we get a cool sequence where the Turtles utilise one of the more toyetic aspects of their van, with Raphael using the flip-out door/seat dealie to fire upon the creature.
Tumblr media
The Turtle Van suddenly ends up looking a whole lot less cool though, after the plant relieves it of its front bumper and begins chowing down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The plant retreats back into the sewers, where the Turtles attempt to subdue it by dressing Michelangelo up as a female plant named "Flora". This buys them enough time to attack the plant at the root, causing it to rapidly wither away.
Tumblr media
Returning to the lair, our regular end of the episode pizza joke will not be seen tonight, as April shows up instead with a gift for the Turtles - a Venus Fly Trap. Hey, it's nice to mix things up once in a while!
I went into this one with very low expectations after "The Incredible Shrinking Turtles" but all things considered I ended up being pleasantly surprised. While it does little to really advance the Eye of Sarnath storyline and it's visually inconsistent, the gags here land more often than not, and the frantic pace means none of the settings ever outstay their welcome. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm tentatively giving "It Came from Beneath the Sewers" a thumbs up.
Two down, two to go. Next time, the Eye of Sarnath trudge continues in "The Mean Machines".
