Walter Hines Page's 1913 Letter on Mexican Revolution
In 1913, during the Mexican Revolution, the British ambassador to the United States, Walter Hines Page, wrote a letter to the British Foreign Secretary, Sir Edward Grey, expressing his concern about the political instability in Mexico. Page suggested that Mexico might require foreign intervention to restore order and governance. In his letter, Page mentioned that Mexico might need “200 years to…

From the UK's 2024 General Election, after a recount - Labour won Hendon by 15 votes. Never say your individual vote won't matter.
#uk politics#vote#and also this is a good reminder to vote tactically - Green and LibDem each picked up several thousand. tactical voting would have#secured a more stable victory for Labour here - it's lucky the Tory vote got split with Reform as well

Something that I wish more people understood is that this election is no longer about who forms a government. That is a forgone conclusion at this point unless shit really hits the fan. This election is about who leads the opposition.
If the conservatives are allowed to get away with second place, they will still have the platform to poison our politics and rebuild to come back down the line.
If the lib dems get to finish second instead, they will get to set the narrative, the media will be forced to platform them more and the conservatives less, and we actually stand a chance at having the labour government held to account. Polls show that this is on the cards.
We are so close to a seismic shift in politics in this country.
But to do it, we need to vote tactically. We need to the number of lib dem seats where possible, but realistically they have a ceiling of support at around 70-75 seats. So the other half of the equation is to reduce the number of conservative seats as far below 70 as we can. There is no such thing as a safe tory seat this election, with enough tactical voting they can all be wiped out.
To that end, here are two resources that can help:
^^The most reliable tactical voting site with the greatest track record, proven to be legit unlike some of the fake ones that the tories have set up, and the only one that I know of purely focused on getting the tories out of power and out of the opposition.
^^An initiative to try to beat the tory and reform uk bot farms at their own game.
Together we can reach net zero tories

What are your thoughts on Project 2025?
sounds like a shit time but also just, like, sounds like the logical conclusion of the overton window shifting as rightward as it has. to a certain extent project 2025 is an extension of black and brown reality in this country and i guess that's why i'm not totally panicked about it. like.... it is bad. but the united states is terrible to begin with, it is a tree with rotten roots and that can only bear rotten fruit, project 2025 is simply one of her stinky fruits birthed from her most rancid branch
also in my opinion, even if the project itself gets blocked via electorate the ideas will stick and spread and morph. republicans in office around the country are already trying to do that on a local scale (florida, for example). that is something i don't think most liberals in this country are prepared for. they won't even let you make silly haha joke about trump nearly getting a head transplant, how are they expecting to combat fascism?
#anonymous#people ask me stuff and things#think about it this way: the tories lost in the uk#but the labour party won't budge on many major issues like trans healthcare#AND reform uk is spread as basically tories but worse#that's what we're staring down the barrel of#brexit was a predictor and this election will be too#i DO hate it here i must say

What a night!
Tories wiped out in Wales
Jacob Rees-Mogg lost his seat
Nigel Farage got a seat (and Donald Trump congratulated him on it as though he’d won the election)
Jeremy Corbyn kept his seat
Liz Truss lost her seat
13 ministers lost their seats
The Lib Dems got 71 seats
Sinn Fein got more seats than ever
And we have a new PM with, as of now, 412 seats in less votes than Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour got in 2019 (people just liked Boris, and now they really hate the Tories)

Ik this is only a tiny baby step to the left, but Even So, with the rise of extreme right politics in Europe, we're allowed to feel relieved
#14 years of Tories was too much#like i wasn't even a teenager yet the last time we had a labour government#woes of emily#uk politics#good morning everyone we kind of did it#well. we did. mostly thanks to reform splitting the vote#i also think it's shit that kier starmer is going to claim this as a win personally to him#when he just happens to be the guy standing there who isn't a tory#just a tory light...

Labour won by a history making landslide-- and I hope what this bloody, broken country takes from that is a beginning, not an end. let this not be the only pitiful, half hearted move towards the left, towards a better country, that we make before returning to ouroboros levels of conservatism. let this just be the first stumbling step for change.
