Excerpt from Record Collector September 2015
"One of the most revealing interviews of Jeff Buckley’s short life was conducted for a fanzine with a small readership. Phil Smith resurrects it here, with thanks to Andrew Truth for the interview and extensive contributions
In 1995, fanzine journalism was giving the established music press a run for its money. Andrew Truth had been producing Plane Truth since 1988 but issue 15 (circulation: 500) was to be his last. It had interviews with the usual unusual selection of bands, some fondly remembered and some largely forgotten.
Lurking at the back of the fanzine was an encounter with Jeff Buckley, son of Tim and on the way to becoming a legend in his own right. Andrew had conducted the interview on 3 September 1994, before Buckley’s show at what was then the Hop & Grape (now Manchester Academy 3). Buckley had only just released Grace and started touring with a full band, which Andrew remembers him enthusing about. The album was yet to slow-burn its way into the hearts of millions.

What a night!
Tories wiped out in Wales
Jacob Rees-Mogg lost his seat
Nigel Farage got a seat (and Donald Trump congratulated him on it as though he’d won the election)
Jeremy Corbyn kept his seat
Liz Truss lost her seat
13 ministers lost their seats
The Lib Dems got 71 seats
Sinn Fein got more seats than ever
And we have a new PM with, as of now, 412 seats in less votes than Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour got in 2019 (people just liked Boris, and now they really hate the Tories)

I finally finished the Goolding inquiry! Here are my thoughts on everyone's testimonies!
Stewart Pearson: 3/10. This man has never said anything clearly in his entire life and is not about to start.
Fergus Williams: 3/10. Skin flakes???? Who elected this man????
Phil Smith: 2/10. He's being himself. Sadly. Why the fuck would you say that about Mr Tickel.
Emma Messinger: 3/10. Not dreadful conducting herself but again, what the fuck.
Adam Kenyon: 2/10. Same as above but I feel bad for Emma and him having to deal with Phil.
Terri Coverly: 2/10. No.
Nicola Murray: 6/10. She didn't do anything terrible. 50/50 on whether or not I like her hair.
Robyn Murdoch: 10/10. Absolute queen. She speaks nothing but truth.
Ollie Reeder: 3/10. He squirmed! He was like one of those hydraulic press videos! Just fucking crumpled.
Glenn Cullen: 7/10. Hilarious stuff. I'm always one for mocking Ollie a bit and blatantly lying is always funny.
Malcolm Tucker: Initially, 10/10. Funny and I find it very compelling. Goes downhill after his second appearance so it drops to a 5/10. His final appearance was a sight to behold. Did it succeed? Nah, not really. But it was enjoyable enough to bump him up to a 7/10. RIP king 😔

Adam and Phil get stuck in a lift together after hours; Emma and Peter don't notice while Fergus keeps having to talk himself out of calling the police and reporting Adam missing every five minutes.

When I got a Ph.D., I got it for BJU, donchaknow! ;)
On behalf of the Administration, I wish to congratulate you on successfully completing all the requirements for your doctoral degree.
We are proud of you and your accomplishment, and we greatly appreciate the investment of time that you made in pursuing and successfully completing this advanced degree in speech. Your contribution to the University will be much greater because of the time you have taken to prepare yourself for the calling that God has given to you here. You are to be commended for your perseverance in completing your work in a timely manner.
I know you are greatly relieved and will be able to enjoy Christmas even more now that this task is completed. May your new year be filled with continued blessings as you faithfully serve the Lord here at BJU.

the amount of geeky analogies made will equal the amount of times they call the other a nerd
ollie reeder and phil smith’s inevitable podcast. unlike the rest is politics because they always disagree disagreeably and it’s terrible, and yet very like the rest is politics in that they can’t stop flirting. they’re eternally trying to interview malcolm

It’s been a wild week for politics
First, there was the budget
Rishi Sunak left as Tory leader
Only to be replaced by Kemi Badenoch
Another in a long line of evil, racist, transphobic, hateful ghouls who has ever served as Tory Party leader
And stateside, RFK Jr
Believes he’s living in the plot of Dr Strangelove
Which can only end one way
And to cap it all off, the US Election is on November 5th
November 5th is of course is our fireworks night. Our election was held on July 4th, which was the Americans’ fireworks night. Funny how that happened.
Brace yourselves.

The narrativity of walking might be partly "characterized by the movement of one present to another", but it is disrupted -- at least for most adults in relatively if unequally prosperous economies -- by a utopianism of the past: nostalgia. The walker, there, is in defiance of the petroleum imperative. The refusal to drive or be driven is a wilful, arrogant, romantic, backward glancing nod to the past.
Phil Smith, Dread, Route and Time: an autobiographical walking of everything else
