Thinking about and sketching untraumatized, pre-cult Mortimer to coincide with @faerunsbest Dark!Sybyll.

It's come to my attention that I actually haven't drawn Mortimer smiling and in doing so I decided he has a gap tooth he's a bit (read: very) self conscious of.

I also decided that for a familiar he would have a rat because of course a dude believing he doesn't deserve kindness loves unlovable animals.

The only thing that matches pre/post trauma is that Mortimer will info-dump about his interests the second the alcohol hits him.

I keep thinking about how sweet he was and how badly I fucked him up dear word someone save him from me.

Here is the story behind these photos

John loved to abuse my sense of order. One day he banged on the art room door, asking his standard question: “Are you naked, can I come in?” I opened the door, and he was holding a huge cardboard box taller than he was. “Got the art department a Christmas gift.” The size of the box and the tacky logo on the side—Tropical Illusions, Miami—spelled trouble. “Come on, let’s open it!” he said enthusiastically. While John was wrestling with the box, I ran and found RoseMarie. “What the hell did he buy?” She shook a finger at me threateningly and warned me that he’d been tracking the thing down for a year. John was on the floor like it was Christmas morning, Styrofoam and cardboard everywhere. He had the directions in one hand, and his other hand propped up a Lucite tube about seven feet long and nine inches or so in diameter. “We need six gallons of purified water, then we plug it in!” Purified water? Plug it in? My coworkers Carl and Michelle returned from Duane Reade with jugs of Poland Spring water. John filled the tube, snapped on a lid made of plastic palm leaves, plugged it in, and there it was, our very own, bubbling, color-changing, imitation palm tree. It was hideous. As I shook my head in disapproval, John was delighted with his destruction of the art room’s serenity.
