World's oldest aquarium fish 'Methuselah' could be decades older than we originally thought, DNA clock reveals
A new study has found that the famous Australian lungfish Methuselah, who first arrived in the U.S. in 1938, could be up to 101 years old.
The world's oldest aquarium fish, a lungfish named Methuselah, may actually be decades older than researchers originally thought and may even be over 100 years old, a new study finds. Methuselah is a female Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) that resides at Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco, California. She first arrived at the aquarium in 1938 after being sent to the U.S. along with more than 200 other fish from Fiji and Australia.  Aquarium staff have never been sure how old Methuselah is, but until now the best guess was that she is 84 years old, which makes her the oldest known fish in captivity. (In the Bible, Methuselah was a man who reputedly lived to be 969 years old.)...

The pop-up Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh (吉祥红龟粿) stall in Sun Plaza never fails to attract us with their colourful range of kuehs. Mum picked up some Peanut Ang Ku Kuehs (front row) and Sweet Bean Ang Ku Kuehs (back row). These traditional glutinous rice snacks are sticky and soft, packed with fillings. Best eaten on the day of purchase or keep it in the fridge then steam it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me, I am intrigued by these blue and white lumps of glutinous rice snacks. The inside is filled with gula melaka sweetened desiccated coconut. I couldn’t find any information on it but the nearest I came across is Pulut Inti (Steamed Glutinous Rice with Coconut Topping). Taste wise, it is comparable but lose out on the banana leaf fragrance as it uses paper wrappers.

This Labubu doll craze is taking the whole world by storm. Even Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh is coming out with a set of seven Labubu Ang Ku Kuehs (S$60) with a choice of peanut, sweet bean or mixture of the two fillings. If you just want to buy one piece, it will cost you S$10.

Brandt's Bat: researchers once documented a case in which a Brandt's bat had survived in the wild for more than 40 years, making this the longest-living bat species in the world
Tumblr media
In 1964, a wild Brandt's bat (Myotis brandtii) was captured, banded, and released by researchers in the Biryusa region of Siberia. The very same bat was eventually recaptured by another team of researchers in 2005; it would have been at least 41 years old by then, making it the oldest bat ever recorded.
The previous record-holder was also a Siberian Brandt's bat (with an estimated age of 38 years).
Tumblr media
There are twelve other species within the genus Myotis that have been documented living past the age of 20, but the lifespan of the Brandt's bat is exceptionally long, especially compared to other small mammals.
This species (and the longevity of a few other bat species) defies our conventional understanding of the relationship between an animal's size and its lifespan -- smaller animals normally have a much shorter lifespan compared to large animals, partly due to their higher metabolic demands, but these bats represent a rare exception to that rule. In fact, with an average weight of just 4 to 8 grams (which is roughly the combined weight of 2 or 3 pennies), the Brandt's bat has the longest lifespan of any mammal relative to its size.
Tumblr media
Research suggests that its increased lifespan may be at least partially linked to a mutation in two of the genes that are related to growth. This article describes the results of one particular study:
Genes for two proteins involved in growth — called growth hormone receptor (GHR) and insulinlike growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) — showed changes that also appear among other long-lived bat species. Previous studies in mice and other animals suggest genetic changes in GHR and IGF1R are linked with longevity. For instance, mice with mutations in GHR live twice as long as normal mice, said study researcher Vadim Gladyshev, a geneticist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
These same genetic changes also may be responsible for the bats' small size ...
"We think the bat's life span is, in part, an unintended consequence of its small body size."
Tumblr media
There are a few other factors that may also play a role:
Brandt's bats also hibernate and roost in caves — behaviors that may help them avoid predators and extreme weather conditions, and contribute to their longer life span, the researchers said. The Brandt's bat also takes a relatively long time to reach maturity, and it does not produce many offspring — two characteristics seen in larger, longer-living mammals.
Tumblr media
Note: nearly all of the articles that I came across refer to the 41-year-old bat as a "Brandt's bat," but at least one other source uses the term "Siberian whiskered myotis," instead. That term simply refers to the Siberian variety of the Brandt's bat (subspecies Myotis brandtii sibiricus) in particular.

Long and and short lived races always fascinated me in fantasy. Of course, part of it was the very natural desire for immortaliy even at the cost of my humanity, but beside that its creating interesting dynamics when races that live hundreds of years with people who can't make a century.
Take Carrot. He's 16 at the start of Guards Guards and dwarfes don't enter puberty until 55. He grew up among dwarfs, but by the time dwarfs of his age, his playmates, are old enough to consider following to Ankh-Morpork, he'll be an old man. They'll have grown up with accounts of his adventures via letter, yet when they reach the city they may only find a bust in a guardhouse, showing the old face of late captain or commander Carrot.
His parents live in the knowledge that one day they'll get a letter, not from him, but from his successor and that he probably wouldn't even qualify as adult, by dwarven standarts.
Usually, such themes are explored with immortals and then its treated like an exception, but in diverse magical cultures it is simply normality that your childhood friends may not leave childhood until after your death, that a good friend can expire after a short while, that some people have century spanning plans while others live life within a decade.
One day Minty might ask her king how her old childhood friend, what was his name, Carrot, is doing in the big city...

In a groundbreaking endeavor, researchers at the University of Rochester have successfully transferred a longevity gene from naked mole rats to mice, resulting in improved health and an extension of the mouse's lifespan. Naked mole rats, known for their long lifespans and exceptional resistance to age-related diseases, have long captured the attention of the scientific community. By introducing a specific gene responsible for enhanced cellular repair and protection into mice, the Rochester researchers have opened exciting possibilities for unlocking the secrets of aging and extending human lifespan. "Our study provides a proof of principle that unique longevity mechanisms that evolved in long-lived mammalian species can be exported to improve the lifespans of other mammals," says Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of biology and medicine at Rochester.

Can you explain quirk duplicates? If you understand anyway, I've just been curious about it since the "Decay is a modified duplicate of Overhaul" reveal. Is it like taking genetic material and then just doing some genetic modification?
Are the muscles bursting out of Imasuji a bug or a feature of the quirk? Because Hosu Nomu, Hood and Wolfram all have Muscle Augmentation as well but their muscles don’t burst out of their body?
Tumblr media
Duplicating Quirks is a process of copying a Quirk, usually for the opportunity for it to be implanted in another person. We don't have much detail on how Garaki is able to do this, but it can be assumed it's him sampling from someone, cultivating it in his lab, and then grafting the Quirk onto whomever he wants it to go or having it be transferred by All For One. Several Quirks have been duplicated, such as "Life Force", "Double", and especially "Super Regeneration". "Muscle Augmentation" may have been one as well, but given how radically different all the examples are and the different names they sometimes have, it's more likely just different Quirks given the same name in translation. While useful, the process is not perfect. We are told that this can take some time to do and that Quirks get weaker whenever they are duplicated, hence why it wasn't done that often and only Quirks that seem to be necessary for a specific purpose. This is most prominently shown with "All For One", as All For One started to lose control over all of the accumulated powers because he was given a cloned version of it.
Anything beyond that becomes a little more complicated. We do that so that Garaki can modify abilities by introducing other Quirks into them. However, we have zero idea what this entails. He could be mixing and matching parts together to frankenstein a new Quirk, similar to how Quirks combine to make new applications when people have multiple Quirks or making something like an artificial Quirk Marriage. It's not helped by how few examples we have of this. We know that "Warp Gate" was made from "Cloud". But I am going to be honest, I can't really tell where "Cloud" fits into all of that. There's the cloudy covering, but that's about it. Maybe it was combined with a dozen other abilities to get where it is now, hence why it's so powerful. The only concrete example we have is with Tomura and Kai. "Overhaul" was copied over from Kai and then modified to become "Decay". We're told that it was done by emphasizing the destructive parts of "Overhaul". I prefer to believe that's more because a cloned power deviates from the original venison and removes the reconstructive part of the power, forcing it to mutate with its lack of limiters.

The Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh (吉祥红龟粿) pop up stall at Sun Plaza has a table full of colourful Kuehs or Kuihs (粿). It is a fairly broad term which may include items that would be called cakes, cookies, dumplings, pudding, biscuits, or pastries in English and are usually made from rice or glutinous rice. Picked up four vivid red Peanut Ang Ku Kuehs and two green Coconut Ang Ku Kuehs for a total of S$9. Peeling away the square of banana leaf and taking a bite, the skin is so soft and stretchy. Both the grounded peanut and sweetened desiccated coconut fillings are so fragrant but not overly sweet.

Never underestimate the power of self care and self love. It might sound like a trivial slogan, but it’s the old truth.
•Find time for things you love
•Stop eating junk and processed foods
•Have a regular sleeping schedule and try to have 7.5-9 hours of sleep every day (individual needs for sleep vary from person to person)
•Think about things that make you proud of yourself and don’t torment yourself with stuff you cannot change.
•No matter how much you love your family- find a bit of time just for yourself - they’ll appreciate you more if you’re mentally rested and in a good mood
•Decompress after work- don’t jump into chores the moment you come back home- give yourself 15-20 minutes to rest
•Drink 2.5-3 litres of water a day. If you drink a glass of water every hour for 12 hours of your day it will nicely add up without you peeing like crazy;)
•Use broad spectrum sunscreen no matter what the weather is like and even during winter to keep youthful look and prevent age/liver/sun spots
