reminder to myself and whoever else needs it to stop feeding the machine. I'm aware I'm yelling into the void but look at the past couple years of games. They're pushing $70, $80, $100!!! for games that are completely unfinished, unpolished, and sometimes completely unplayable. Yes the game showcases were cool. The doom game looks sick and I don't even go there, but they're shaking the shiny keys to distract you and get you swept up in the hype. They're going to push so much fomo marketing to get you to jump for it full price.

Wait for sales. Wait and buy a used copy. Hell, wait a couple days (even hours!!!) after launch and reviews and breakdowns will start coming out. Our game backlogs are already packed, and mr big AAA studio can deal with some of us waiting to see if they actually delivered what was promised.

Welcome to the reverse verse! This is part 1 of 2 of a commission for @i-am-as-normal-as-you-are and I can't wait to tell you all about it, because I'm incapable of being normal and chill about these concepts, so I ran with it.

Charles Rowland was born in 1900, his mum was from India and moved to the UK after marrying Charles' dad, a soldier who was not... very loving. Charles' heritage gave him some problems, but none as bad as that one time in 1916 when he was sacrificed to a demon and spent the next 7 decades in Hell. He doesn't like to talk about it, except when it can get him what he wants. He was always an angry boy, or so he thought, but after his time spent in Hell, it became so much worse. He's explosive and unpredictable, and so he mostly avoids conflict. He doesn't need to fight anyone, as his charming personality and sweet smile (plus a few smart calculations) always seem to be enough to convince people to give him what he asks for. And when the fight is inevitable... well, he has Edwin for that!

Edwin Payne grew up very sheltered, in a deeply religious home, and he is proud of that. Don't try to argue with him, because he surely has a Bible verse that will help him win (and if not, he is not above using his croquet mallet now that he has someone to keep safe). Unfortunately for him, he realized at a quite young age that he felt attraction towards other boys. Even worse, somehow other people could tell as well, including those peers that ended up killing him for it (the rumour spread throughout school was that he had died due to AIDS, and most people just accepted it). He never acted on those unnatural urges of his, but when he met this ghost who had just escaped Hell... he decided not to risk eternal damnation, and to stay here with Charles, instead. Edwin has no interest in the supernatural or in magic, and sort of looks down on them, but luckily his friend's got that covered.

don't think about eddie in el paso facetiming buck early in the morning to get him to walk him through making chris’ favorite pancakes, desperately wanting things to go just right for his first morning back under the same roof of his son. don't think about the call ringing out.

don't think about eddie trying to facetime buck again after chris is holed up in his room playing video games and he's overwhelmed with the sounds of life now inhabiting the house that was so quiet before: the click-clack of chris' crutches, the distant echoes of whatever game he and his friends are playing, his laugh, so dear and familiar, eddie's heart catches-

no answer.

then, later, eddie hesitating with his thumb over the call button. thinks about buck on shift. buck on a call. not having eddie half a step behind him ready to step in, anticipating all his moves, what if something happened? how long would it be before he knew? before someone called to tell-

he pivots, texts:

Hey. Just wanted to check in.

I know you're on shift, but call when you see this.

Nothing bad! Chris wants to say hi.

He says you promised movie recs. Something about a space dog? He says you told him we'd love it.

Also, I successfully managed to make the pancakes this morning without your explicit instructions on call.

Chris ate them. Said he felt like something was missing though. Not sure what since I followed your recipe exactly, but the kid is right. Something was missing.

Okay. Talk soon, Buck.

and then. and then-

eddie and chris curled on different corners of the couch after dinner, both not paying attention to what's on tv: chris, presumably texting his friends; eddie, talking himself out of sending buck a "hey, just checking in again" text for the fifth time today.

chris gasps. and-well, eddie knows his son. he knows the shape of all his letters, of his breaths, of everything that makes chris, chris. so when chris gasps the way he does, eddie knows.

he looks over before chris can even fully turn his phone towards him:

don't think about eddie's stomach dropping. don't think about eddie being confronted with the reality of everything he left behind in LA—his true family, a family that is surely feeling his absence more acutely right now. who could’ve used him. don't think about eddie having to put on a brave face for chris while trying not to completely unravel.

don't think about chris and eddie trying to call buck and it going to voicemail again. and again. and again-

maybe it was just a cool visual but like...is anyone else curious about what would've happened if Lin Ling gave into the fear in his first battle? Like, fear seems to function the same as trust (or belief or faith or whatever) since his old boss said his workers' fears of getting laid off powered him but it kinda seems like Lin Ling was gonna get infected by the fear after doubting himself (fear in another sense, I guess)?

anyway had another random thought about how faith and fear go hand in hand in religion and in general (machiavelli-esque kinda thing, y'know?) and just like, what if a hero becomes so powerful people become as scared as they are reverent of them and they end up turning into villains?
