[Photo ID: White box with rainbow border. Text reads: 'Statement on DMV Policy Change. LGBTQ+ advocates from around the state organized and mobilized in great numbers this past legislative session. Through actions like protests, letter-writings, die-ins, and more, we defeated 21 out of 22 anti-LGBTQ+ bills attempting to move through the Florida legislature. One of these bills, HB 1639, sponsored by local representative Doug Bankson, was particularly egregious. It sought to redefine "sex" in a way that excludes transgender, non-binary, and intersex people, and to prohibit a person's state identification documents from reflecting their gender identity. As the bill was heading towards its downfall in the legislature, the Deputy Executive Director, Robert Kynoch, of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) released a memo to county tax collectors in late January rescinding previous department policy (IR08 - Gender Requirements), which allowed for Florida residents to change the gender marker on their ID to accurately reflect their gender identity. The memo wrongly excludes gender identity from "sex" in an effort to subvert the democratic process to redefine sex - and prohibit gender marker amendments - absent legislative authority. In a similar way, the legislature continued its attacks on the rights of immigrants and people experiencing homelessness in the form of HB 1451. This bill, which passed and was signed into law by DeSantis, restricts the acceptance of community IDs issued by community organizations to immigrants and individuals experiencing homelessness. Community IDs are essential for demonstrating that a person is a resident and member of a given community. It is already tremendously difficult for these groups to acquire valid identification, and this law imposes yet another barrier to identification.' /End ID]

It's 2023 and I live in Florida.
I've lived my whole life in central Florida (with the nearest city being Orlando), and the general political climate I grew up in was pretty moderate. The far-right shift things have been taking honestly came as a shock (although to be fair, confronting the rise of fascism in your backyard is a tough pill to swallow no matter where you live), considering the atmosphere I was raised in; I remember going on vacation to places like Georgia and Tennessee when I was a kid and being shocked to see people flying Confederate battle flags and selling them as souvenirs in gift shops. Florida always felt like more of a mixed bag, albeit a whiplash-inducing one; you can go down to Mims and see Trump signs tacked up everywhere, or you can go to Lake Eola and see pride flags in all the windows.
Both the Pulse and Parkland shootings happened when I was in high school, and I distinctly remember how both of them rocked my community. We staged walkouts at school, had conversations with our families and friends about topics like gun control and the LGBT+ community that lasted for weeks, and it felt like a sense of mourning and desire for progress could be felt within everyone I knew.
Which is one of the many reasons why whatever the fuck Desantis is doing infuriates me so much. I hate to see the place I grew up in turned into what it's becoming, and frankly, it's painful not just to see outsiders see it first and foremost in this way, but for them to be right about it. When Kathy Hochul told conservative New Yorkers to "move to Florida," to me, that felt like a stab in the gut, that the place I lived and grew up in should be recognized nationally like this. For me, that just wasn't Florida. Did we have conservative crazies? Sure, but overall, I always saw Florida as a much more diverse and multifaceted place than people give it credit for. But unfortunately, with the insane laws being passed here and Desantis receiving a level of support that to me seems unthinkable (I swear, he could write "I am a fascist" on his forehead and people still wouldn't give a shit), and the fear I feel every day that things are getting worse and worse, the apathy that follows as a survival mechanism that I keep reminding myself that I can't give into, it feels unrecognizable. And yet, this didn't come out of nowhere.
My advice to those who are still reading? Don't be apathetic. Oppression is happening here, and will continue to worsen, and by writing off entire populations as people unworthy of compassion, you are writing off the people who are oppressed and may not be able to "just leave," who are suffering the most under such legislation and sociopolitical climates. Fascism thrives off of fear and dividing people into "us" and "them," so I'm begging you, remember the humanity of those who are suffering under it- and yes, that includes the people who have been indoctrinated into it. Do you have to like them, excuse them, or forgive them? Absolutely not. But their fears and ignorance are being preyed upon, and that will end up hurting more people in the long run.
Secondly, don't think it can never happen to you. I've seen people in blue states constantly dismiss whatever Desantis and co. are doing because it doesn't affect them, but if he runs for president and wins, he becomes the entire country's problem. And it doesn't have to be him; we've seen far-right ideology spreading across the country, perpetrated by multiple people. I've seen Europeans and Canadians blaming the rise of far-right movements in their countries on Trump and America, and while Trump and far-right American movements may have encouraged them, fascism can show up anywhere; the first step to fighting it acknowledges that there's never just one person to blame; it works systemically and thrives off of apathy. Think critically, stay educated, and most importantly, stay compassionate.

I thought I had therapy tomorrow, but it’s actually NEXT week ughh I need a session so badly.
——
I’ve been talking on and off with M about all the lgbt+ attacks happening in Florida. We learned about a new bill that’s trying to be passed that could prevent him from getting anymore gender affirming care. I’m sure the bill will continue to get more watered down as it goes through the different stages (I am so not political and have been doing my best to learn how this all works so bear with my fake terms and inability to explain properly).
I have a theory with zero proof to back it up, so take that as you want. The “don’t say gay” bill was testing the waters. They came in strong with it and it initially passed as a very watered down version of what they wanted. No lgbt+ sexual education K-3. And you think “what teacher would go into that kinda detail anyway?” But it opened the door to updates and more strict guidelines. Now look at where we are at.
I don’t know the name of the bill, but this one barring gender affirming care of minors. From my understanding of reading the actual bill text, this isn’t an all out ban, but is testing the waters to see how much further they can push it. The bill we learned about yesterday would push into adult care.
M has kind of been living in ignorance until now. My brain has been on board to leave Florida for months now, but there was zero relief hearing that M doesn’t want to stay here either.
We started the house buying process, but I’ve felt so uneasy about it. It took not even a year for so many restrictions to be put in place for lgbt+ people and it’s not stopping. Even if these bills don’t pass, there are many people in Florida actively trying to erase this community and Desantis stands by with a smile on his face welcoming this hate.
——
Anyway. We’re looking to Delaware. There’s been a lot of forward movement for the rights of lgbt+ people. It seems that the north and west of the US are the places to be. However, the west coast is too far from my parents and the north has too much snow (never again would I want to live in New England haha). Delaware is a nice middle ground. 2-3 hour flight from my parents and 1-2hr drive from my friends and extended family. I think we could feasibly make this move and not feel totally alone and unsupported.
This is not a make or break factor, but my mom has been wanting to move back to New Jersey for at least a year now (and initially wanted to retire in Delaware). My dad doesn’t want to move, but I wonder if my parents would end up following us up north. M’s mom would likely follow as well.
——
It feels scary. I had no intentions of moving out of Florida (or back north) until I had no more connections to it (if you can read between the lines there). I actually love Florida. I love the theme parks, the nature trails, the crystal clear springs, the wildlife, Orlando, st Augustine, the beautiful countryside, etc. Florida feels like home, a feeling I hadn’t had since like 2007. And we’re probably leaving it. We have to. It’s not safe here.

Wednesday, Nov. 15th, 23
This is the most eventful week of the semester in the BEST of way 😊
Sunday was the last Board meeting of the year and the second I attended, where I was elected to join! So, I’m now a staying team member and looking forward to continuing working with everyone.
Tomorrow is opening night for the exhibition, and I’ll be spending pretty much all day prepping and setting up 😊
I heard a lot of interest has been expressed by people in the community, which is super exciting! I hope we end up with a good turnout!
Before the Sunday meeting, I also had the opportunity to speak to one of my mentors from the LGBTQ History Museum of Central Florida who works in Rollins College’s history department.
I told her I was graduating soon and looking for work on a college campus. However, she had an internship opportunity working on an archiving project with a local foundation and she thought I’d be an excellent candidate for it!
She provided the contact information, and I reached out and sent my resume the next day. Now I have an interview this afternoon!!!
Finger-crossed that it’s mine for the taking 😊
Thursday, Nov. 16th, 23
It’s exhibit opening night!
I spent the morning and afternoon prepping and setting up with Rachel from the Museum Board.
Pinning the posters up was a challenge because they were heavy and the felt in the display cases was not sturdy but we managed to work them in there. They’re not perfect (well one of them is pretty flattened out. The other one is kind of bulgy because the felt was just not cooperating!) But it’s all legible and we really did our best.
I’m currently writing from my husband’s workplace as I kill time between setting up and the actual event tonight. I have to be back at The Center around 5:30 pm, and it’s 3:40 pm right now.
A little bit about The Center, their mission statement on their website reads:
“The mission of LGBT+ Center Orlando is to promote and empower the LGBT community and its allies through advocacy, education, information, and support.”
They have three locations, two of which are testing centers in Kissimmee and Orlando, and their main location is in Orlando as well. There they host community events, test for STI’s, provide free resources such as a pantry and some contraception options, carry exhibits – some larger held and some smaller like ours, and so much more.
Living on the other side of the county, I don’t run into resources like this a lot or spaces with this sort of dedication. It feels great to be more closely involved with this organization and the local LGBTQ community with which I identify as being part of but, due to proximity issues, cannot participate and connect as much as I’d like to.
Friday, Nov. 17th, 23
Today has been a day of relaxation and reflection.
Last night was amazing!
The rain unfortunately kept a lot of potential exhibit guests, but it was still a lovely turn out 😊
I had such a great time and even saw one of my mentors from my 2021 internship at the Orange County History Center. He said he enjoyed the exhibit, which was so encouraging because earlier this year the exhibit he had a substantial hand in designing and preparing was finally installed.
I also got to meet some of the staff and volunteers at The Center and learn a bit about their lives here in Florida and as members of the LGBTQ+ community.
This week, between the exhibit event, joining the Board of Directors, and the interview for the archival internship, I feel extremely validated.
The more I hang around these public history spaces, the more I feel a part of it, something I entered this semester feeling insecure about. 😊
Here are some pictures from the event:

Florida mayors across the state support LGBTQ rights. This is in light of several bills targeting the community that have been passed by the state legislature and are heading to the desk of Gov. Ron DeSantis. At least eight mayors from Orlando, Miami Beach, Tampa, Tallahassee, and more have signed the pledge in support of the LGBTQ advocacy organization GLSEN and its Rise Up campaign. This is according to the group. Several local leaders issued city proclamations, promising "safe learning environments that include and affirm all children, including LGBT students," according to one of the proclamations. "I was elected to be mayor for every resident of Gainesville, and it is critical to me that all our neighbors, particularly the youngest and most vulnerable, feel welcome and safe in our community," Gainesville Mayor Harvey Ward told ABC News in a statement. He continued, "I support the well-being and healthy development of everyone in our community through the guarantee of basic human rights." The Rise Up campaign also advocates for LGBTQ-affirming books, resources, and curriculum, as well as advocacy against anti-LGBTQ bills and rhetoric. Trantalis continued, "Discrimination of any kind, particularly towards LGBTQ+ children, has no place in our society. Greater Fort Lauderdale boasts one of the highest concentrations of same-sex households in the nation, and we welcome over 1.3 million LGBTQ+ visitors each year." Florida has led the recent wave of legislation and policies targeting the LGBTQ community. The bills passed by the Florida legislature Wednesday include a bathroom bill that bars transgender people from using restrooms or changing facilities that do not align with their gender assigned at birth. Another bill expands the Parental Rights in Education law, dubbed the "Don't Say Gay" law by critics. This bill would restrict classroom instruction on gender identity or sexual orientation from prekindergarten through grade 8; from grades 9 through 12, such content must be "age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students under state standards." However, the Florida Board of Education had already voted to expand the restriction from kindergarten through 12th grade. The bill says school employees and students "may not be required" to refer to "another person using that person's preferred personal title or pronouns" if they "do not correspond to that person's sex" as assigned at birth. It would bar school employees from using pronouns or names that "do not correspond to his or her sex," according to the bill. Teachers would also not be allowed to ask students for their preferred pronouns or names. The bill encourages education on "abstinence from sexual activity" and "the benefits of monogamous heterosexual marriage." The legislation also states that parents may object to school or library books. These books must then "be removed within 5 school days of receipt of the objection and remain unavailable to students at that school until the objection is resolved." Critics slammed the legislation, saying it removes and silences LGBTQ identities from classrooms and school programs. In addition, the restrictions are a form of censorship against certain perspectives. Those in support of the legislation say it gives parents more control over what children learn at school. They claim children will have more space to figure out "who they are," Republican state Sen. Erin Grall says. Florida's largest LGBTQ civil rights group Equality Florida has issued a travel advisory for the state. This advisory is backed by the Florida chapters of the NAACP and the Florida Immigrant Coalition. A spokesperson for DeSantis' office called the move a "stunt" at the time. The Emmaus Heart
by Gary Simpson
Luke 24:36-48 CEV
While Jesus' disciples were talking about what had happened, Jesus appeared and greeted them.
37 They were frightened and terrified because they thought they were seeing a ghost.  But Jesus said, “Why are you so frightened? Why do you doubt? Look at my hands and my feet and see who I am! Touch me and find out for yourselves. Ghosts don't have flesh and bones as you see I have.”
40 After Jesus said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. The disciples were so glad and amazed that they could not believe it. Jesus then asked them, “Do you have something to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish. He took it and ate it as they watched.
44 Jesus said to them, “While I was still with you, I told you that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Books of the Prophets, and in the Psalms had to happen.”  Then he helped them understand the Scriptures. He told them: The Scriptures say that the Messiah must suffer, then three days later he will rise from death. They also say that all people of every nation must be told in my name to turn to God, in order to be forgiven. So beginning in Jerusalem, you must tell everything that has happened.
Reflection:
This interesting passage is sandwiched between Luke’s account of Jesus' resurrection and Jesus appearing to the disciples on the Emmaus Road, and Jesus' ascension.  I will briefly review the Emmaus Road encounter.  Jesus joins two disciples.  Using the Torah and the writings of the prophets (Moses and the prophets), Jesus explains to the disciples the real role the promised Messiah. Our pandemic experience might feel to some people very much like the Emmaus Road.    We are so consumed with the loss that we experienced during the pandemic that we do not realize that the Spirit of the Risen Christ is walking with us on the road of loss, that we are not alone in this difficult time.
John Giel is currently serving as the Chancellor for Canonical Affairs and the Vicor General for the Diocese of Orlando.(1)  He gave a sermon broadcast on Catholic Television for Central Florida.  In his sermon he indicates that the Road to Emmaus is located in our hearts.
“The Road to Emmaus is that time when we have the hardest time believing. The Road to Emmaus is when we have . . . difficult moments and we say, ’I'm out of here.’”  He observes we are more likely to feel this way when life is not going the way we expect it to go.(2)
This encounter in the room is probably recorded in Luke's Gospel, because it helps establish the reality of the resurrection, the need for the cross, the urgency of the task Jesus was giving His followers, and the power of God. (3)
Jesus was crucified and died.  Jesus' followers were overcome with fear, anger, and grief.  They were having a hard time believing.  They could neither comprehend Jesus’ Messianic role nor the fact that Jesus was alive.  Those in the room may have been just searching for proof, for something that could comfort them.  Jesus supplied the proof they needed.  Then Jesus taught them from the Scriptures, showing them that it was necessary for the Messiah to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.  Jesus also explains that through Him, the Messiah, comes forgiveness.(4)  He helped shift their theology.
Many people are spiritually uncertain and troubled.  They live in fear of an angry, harsh, judgmental God. On an intellectual level, they get the fact that God is loving, but, like the disciples on the Emmaus Road, fear keeps them from recognizing the presence of God’s Kingdom when it is right beside them.  Not recognizing and comprehending the Kingdom is a theme that continues in the room. Because the hearts of those in the room were on the Emmaus Road, I titled this reflection “The Emmaus Road Heart.”
The Emmaus Road Heart is seen when Christians want other people to prove they are Christians unless they act, walk, talk, and worship in a specific way.  So we put people to the test.
My Grade 12 year was spent in a religious boarding academy.  Then I progressed to a Christian college.  The expectations of how Christian young people were supposed to act were really something.
• No long hair.  And this was during the late 1970s and the early 1980s.  Almost all young males were wearing long hair.  Our hair could not touch the collar of our shirts or cover our earlobes.
• No jeans or t-shirts.  We could wear jeans and t-shirts at the gym, in the dorm, or when we were working on a job.  The rest of the time, the male students had to wear button-up shirts and either dress pants or corduroy pants.
• No ripped or torn clothing.
• No makeup and jewelry.
• Females could expect to have their dress length measured.
• When I was in Grade 12, we were expected to attend 11 devotions a week in our dorms, 4 church services, and a chapel assembly every week.
That was a grand total of 16 religious services a week. Things were slightly better when I was in college because we were only expected to attend 6 devotions a week in our dorms and the 4 church services and a chapel assembly.  For college, we were down to only 11 religious services a week.
• Radios, stereos, and TVs were not allowed in the academy.  At college level, radios and stereos were allowed as long as they were played so quietly that nobody could hear them outside of your room.  No rock, no Christian rock, and nothing with a strong base beat was allowed.
Zooming forward a few years.  I noticed a Christian boarding school that had the following standards of behavior for their students:
• No reading science fiction.
• Minimum length dresses.
• Pants cannot be too tight or too loose.  Pants are not to have holes.
• Underwear is not to be seen.
• No hats or dark sunglasses in buildings.
• No bandanas can be worn around your head.
• No clothing with messages about alcohol, tobacco, sex, and occultism.
• No tank tops or sleeveless tops.
These rules are largely cultural, but they were used to define Christian behavior.  Cultural elements of Christianity can pose a problem in our understanding of the Kingdom of God.  Some of the rules defining Christian behavior, defining the expression of God at this Christian academy feel dated.  They seem fixed in time about two generations ago.
Will Willimon is a professor at Duke Divinity School.(5) He makes the point that Jesus is “a body in motion,” seemingly to be ahead of the disciples.  He observes that there is something about humanity that is “uncomfortable about the risen Christ in motion.”  Will Willimon continues, “We want to fix Christ, we want to stabilize, to take his presence and define it and confine it.”(6)  And I believe that we have confined Christ to doctrine, to specific expressions of the Christian life.  We confined Christ to the point where we struggle to see Christ working in the lives of women, of non-binary people, LGBT+ people, and in the lives of people with olive, brown, or black skin.
The risen Christ is too big, too loving, too expansive to fit into our White male, European sense of Christ.  We should expect expansiveness from the Risen Christ – after all, Jesus was a brown skinned Jewish radical.  As wonderful as the ancient creeds, the new creeds, and the old doctrine of the church are, the risen Christ is bigger than all of those things. Christ is big enough to work through those who we find unsettling, because of their race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, religion, ability, gender, gender expression, political affiliation, occupation, and sexuality.
Christ is telling us that it is time to unbolt the pews we've been sitting on, that is time for us to grab a light folding chair and to follow the Risen Christ.  Our Christ, the Risen One, is walking through closed doors, going into rooms full of people hungry to be with a community filled with hope and with God’s love.  The Risen Christ is prepared to bring those who are in rooms closed by the fear and hurt of the Emmaus Road Heart to McDougall United Church.  Christ is bringing them to us and is inviting us to keep up as He moves in Emmaus Road Hearts.

A Democratic candidate for a Florida House seat in Seminole County told an audience at a gun safety town hall in March that she worked as an emergency room physician on the night of the Pulse nightclub shooting and removed scores of bullets from dozens of shooting victims.
“It was one of hardest things to work through in my career,” C. Elizabeth McCarthy says in a video of the March 21 forum posted on U.S. Rep. Darren Soto’s Facebook page. “That night of Pulse, I personally removed 77 bullets from 32 victims. ... It was like an assembly line.”
But according to the Florida Department of Health, McCarthy has never been issued a license of any type by the state agency to practice medicine in Florida.
Officials at Orlando Health — the parent company of Orlando Regional Medical Center, where nearly all of the victims from the June 12, 2016, Pulse shooting were treated — said they have no records of McCarthy working there. [...]

Watermark reached out to McCarthy to clear up the questions about her history with Orlando Health. McCarthy replied with an email, stating “No thank you, appreciate you asking.”
Several notable members of the LGBTQ community who have taken to social media to call for answers from McCarthy include Florida House Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, LGBT+ Center Orlando Executive Director George Wallace and prominent LGBTQ physician Dr. Rafael E. Pinero.
“It seems like we all have been deceived. She should be asked to step down from any political and leadership position at this point,” wrote Pinero.

New screening measures are put into place by the Ministry: Every student must be given a medical exam and interview to look for child abuse. With Dumbledore facing an inquiry, Snape is entrusted with the task of making sure EVERYONE receives one.
The first chapter contains a character death and the whole story is quite dark. It begins at the beginning of Prisoner of Azkaban and is AU thereafter. Also note: this story is a "Snape is Harry's biological dad" story. This is not supposed to be the central theme of the story, but people have gotten annoyed that I didn't tell them at the beginning. I have had two REALLY SHITTY days. First off, my parents wanted to talk to me about moving back home which is something I am probably going to have to do even though I really don’t want to and if I move back to Florida, I probably won’t end back up in Colorado once everything is said and done which means I’ll loose my friends in Colorado, my dance troupe, and the museum stuff I’ve done. Basically wasted two years of my life which I already fucking knew but it’s like rubbing it in more. And moving back in with my parents means I won’t have any sort of buffer because my sister is moving to California to do her phD. I have no money. I have no choice. No one has called me up for an interview and I’m not going back to king soopers or another grocery store. I can’t fucking get a job to start with because I burned so many bridges because of mental health issues which I didn’t tell my advisor or graduate assistant-ship supervisor about until it was too late.
My home town is a fucking desolate wasteland. There’s nothing there. I won’t be able to afford to take dance classes and will probably have to travel at least an hour to do lolita community events. All my friends are in Orlando or Tampa which is two hours away. There’s no lgbt scene whatsoever and no real museums outside of the nature centers. My mom thinks I should apply for a job in the area and I don’t fucking want to. So yeah I had a fucking breakdown last night and couldn’t sleep because the thought of moving back home and having no buffer is terrifying. I can’t fucking cut my parents out of my life because I rely on them financially again and they are going to hold it over my head and they don’t understand. Just because my dad is disabled and is stubborn enough to work doesn’t mean he understands when I can’t fucking get out of bed because the only thing that I can think of is dying and wanting to die. And not to mention my parents and I fight over shit they did in the past and they won’t fucking ever own up to their mistakes and blame it all on me.
And now my camera is effectively broken and I can’t even go and take photos, something I was looking forward to doing because I didn’t have time during grad school. I can’t afford to fix it. The lens died that I use for portraits and landscapes so I can’t even freelance after the pandemic because the lens doesn’t work anymore and I don’t have the $200 to fix it so I’ve been very upset about it all day and crying on and off because there goes one of my hobbies and the one that’s easiest to monetize. I tried to go hiking and there were so many assholes with dogs off leash and I was constantly being approached by strange dogs and I hate that.
And then I went to the grocery store and honestly it made me pretty suicidal and I cried in the aisle. And then the grocery cashier (behind spit shield) starts coughing as she checks out my items and takes off her mask and takes a drink and doesn’t fucking wash her hands or change her gloves and continues to check me out. I about wigged out. I went and cried in my car because I literally can’t deal with people doing stupid shit and my camera is broken and my life is effectively over because I have to move home to butt fuck Florida to live with my parents. I have right now probably like $250 to my name. I can’t even get unemployment sorted out so I right now am not receiving any income outside of tutoring which is $70 every two weeks and my parents are going to have to pay for me to move home and my rent and I just want to die.
Everything I have been terrified of being has pretty much come true. I can’t support myself due to health. I’m moving back home and being a burden on my parents who fucking don’t try with my pronouns so hell yeah I’m going to be constantly misgendered and I’m too tried to even try to make them use the right ones. It only causes fucking fights. They be like “You need to realize you have a loving family that wants to help you.”
And now my roommate wants her stupid boyfriend to live with us and we live in a 2/1 apartment and I have been having regular breakdowns.
I can’t fix my camera. I can’t afford to live. I can’t get a job. I’m just waste of goddamn space.

3halfs guy here. I've been having a slow motion freakout for the last few days. I think I'm a trans woman. I'm definitely not a man. I don't know what to do with that. I'm 30 and I'm scared that I wasted the best years of my life (and a failed marriage) not knowing myself. I can't come out. I live in florida and Orlando's great until you remember pulse and a red state's dangerous no matter what. My family's conservative and super transphobic. I don't even know what coming out would entail.
It's ok not to know exactly what to do with the realization once that "oh shit, I think my gender isn't what I thought it was" moment hits you. I know that in my own personal situation, I more or less had sneaking suspicions...that eventually turned into The full blown realization moment..which immediately resulted in my catapulting myself through a seemingly endless sequence of "what if" scenarios over the course of a week like some shitty Evel Knievel knock off motorcycle stunt.
What I didn't realize then that I wish I had known, was that you don't have to do anything that you're not comfortable with once you realize your gender is different from what you once may have thought. It's perfectly fine to just turn things around in your own mind til you feel like you've reached a stable understanding of yourself, there's no rules or regulations out there saying you have to do anything before you're 100% ready.
With regards to living in a red state, especially in an area that has the painful context that Orlando now has for the LGBT+ community, what I can say is that you're not alone in that. I would be surprised if there wasn't already an established trans community in the immediate Orlando area, or at the very least across the state of Florida itself.
One thing that we do benefit from now that we didn't have access to in past generations is that we've got the ability to form strong community ties across all kinds of geographic distances thanks to the Internet (not that it was completely impossible before, but you get what I mean here). Having those connections and that support network can make it easier to deal with having an unsupportive or outright transphobic family, or living in an area whose politics are not LGBT+ friendly - it helps to know you've got a much larger family out there made up of people who have been through some of those same struggles, and who you know you can be yourself with.
We all grow up hearing that the years before 30 are supposed to be about finding yourself, having fun and really getting to enjoy the experience of living...but in reality 30 isn't that old at all, and there's no reason why our 30s, 40s and 50s have to be any less fun, or exciting, or any less a viable time for discovering who you are. So many people grow up in circumstances that prevent them from actually enjoying their teens and 20s as it is, and honestly if we're at the point where we're shucking off society's assigned notion of what gender we're "supposed" to be? then who's to say we can't toss all that shit about 30 being too old to start living your best life out a window too?
Your life is far from over, and this could be the start of a new and exciting part of it for you - but you're the one holding the reigns at the end of the day. You don't have to come out, identify any certain way, medically or socially transition...any of it, unless you decide it's what you want and what you're comfortable doing at the time. Til then, it's ok to not have all the answers, and to keep tossing things around a bit til you feel like you've found something to build off of - whatever that looks like for you.
I hope some of this makes sense (I kinda just unloaded a bunch of stuff all at once, sorry about that!) and I hope the bits that make sense help you to feel a bit less overwhelmed in general. Take a deep breath, or several, and remind yourself sometimes to keep doing that going forward while you think things through. One day you're gonna look back and you're gonna feel amazed at how far you've come from how bad things can feel right now 🧡

Human AU, Trans!Virgil
----------------------------------------------------------------
I should’ve known better than to agree to hang out on a day like this. I looked at the weather and I knew how unbearably hot it was going to be, but of course I said yes. Because when Roman video called me with those pleading puppy dog eyes and the desperate begging for attention, I couldn’t tell him no. Well, I probably could have, but I would have felt bad about it for the rest of my natural life.
Now we sit in uncomfortable closeness in his apartment, from opposite sides of the room. Roman is laying on his back on the tile of the kitchen floor, his limbs thrown out in random directions. I sit on top of the counter with a strong fan blowing directly into my face. It’s perfectly clear to me now, that when my whiny boyfriend was begging me to come over, the statement about his amazing air conditioner was a complete and utter lie.
In fact, the air conditioning unit seemed like it was going to fall apart at any moment. It stopped every few minutes without fail. It made odd sputtering sounds that made me jump no matter how much I was excepted them. It was basically a ticking time bomb, and when it went off we would surely die from the heat. Our funerals could be held on the same day, identical causes of death and all. At least the newspapers would get some pretty good headlines out of my mistake.
Two Florida Men are Killed by Air Conditioner Last Saturday
Pride Dies this Weekend In Orlando, The Cause?: Heat
10,000 Degree Weather Murders Two Orlando Men
God Smites Down Two Orlando Gays by Zapping One Air Conditioner
As I stay perched on the marble and ponder what the journalists might write to announce our comedic deaths, Roman rises from his place starfished out across the tile flooring. A bead of sweat drips from his perfect hairline.
“Love?” I just had the most amazing idea of my short, yet very fulfilling life!” He sounded absolutely exhausted, but still as proud as ever. He always reminds me of a cocky fantasy bard. Charming, proud, attractive, talented, but also horribly over-dramatic and extra. I can feel a thin layer of blush spread over my face at the pet-name’s use and I know the new smile on Roman’s face is a reaction to that.
“Oh damn. Me too. How about we give up on this whole living thing, and just perish.” His prideful expression turns into one of utter confusion. I love how, even after knowing him for such a long time, my cynical comments could confuse his so fucking much. He was never expecting it and his confused expression was adorable. This was pretty much the only time he would let down the cocky bard show. I loved making him confused like he loved to make me blush.
“No Love, no” He’s so fucking cute, if it wasn’t so hot I would get up and kiss him. Once again, I’m disappointed in the weather.
“Aww, is Princy confused?” As I speak I can feel a sly smile creeping over my lips. “Still not used to my humor?” A light blush covers his already rosy cheeks, and maybe, I like that just as much as the confusion.
“I am perfectly fine Virgil.” His reddened complexion doesn’t agree with his words. “Anyway, I have a great plan!’ He takes a few paces toward me and leans up against the counter. He blocks the relief from the fan, which is annoying, but I decide not to mention it.
“What?” The only good thing I can say about the heat is that Roman looks good exhausted and sweaty like this.
“You can’t guess? He seems legitimately disappointed that I can’t just read his mind.
“No, should I know?” My anxiety starts to act up. What could I have possibly forgotten about. It wasn’t his birthday because that was in the fall and it’s summer. Not one of our anniversaries because those are pretty much all in the winter. I’m missing something and I don’t like it.
“Ugh, baby,” Roman whines a little too loudly considering how close he is. “It was going to be a guessing game and it was going to be fun.” He hops onto the counter beside me, but he struggles to climb the marble. I laugh a bit, mostly because he’s the cutest person I’ve ever met, but also because he’s so cocky, yet he can’t get on a counter without help.
“Well, I’ve already ruined the game so you should just tell me.” I gently poke him in the side, earning a response in the form of rolling eyes.
“Okay, are you ready for the most brilliant idea of the century?” His hands are held out oddly in front of him. He looks like a forth grader really acting out their mediocre black cat costume at class halloween party.
“Yeah,” My answer comes out laced with slight giggling over his hand position.
“Where’s my countdown then?” He’s such a needy boy.
“3…2…1…”
“Swimming!” And I am suddenly bombarded with jazz hands. My heart almost stops, but not because of the sudden movement. “We can go cool off at the waterpark. And than I see you with messy towel dried hair after, which would be the most adorable thing in the known universe.” I know he’s trying to flirt and be cute, but he’s unintentionally made my perishing comment a reality.
I really should have told him sooner, but of course I just had to put it off. I guess I did try to tell him I’m trans once, but then I got nervous and he took that as flustered. He assumed I was trying to say ‘I love you’, which was true, but not exactly the first thing on my mind at the time. Also, that’s kind of a bad way to have your first ‘I love you’ exchange. Now, I’m either going to have to tell him the truth, or craft a convincing excuse.
“It’ll be crowded though…” My deception is apparently a -15 and I rolled a nat one because my tone resembled that of a terrified mouse. Probably because I’m close to crying. Roman, apparently has a zero in perception though because he doesn’t seem to notice the difference in my tone.
“So what? I’ll make sure that no boys hit on my lover, except myself of course.” He comes in for a kiss and when he gets close enough, he takes notice of the tears welling up in my eyes. A completely different look of confusion rises on his pretty face, and I’m not a fan of this one. “What’s wrong Love? We don’t have to go if you don’t want to.” His voice is steady as he attempts to calm me.
I feel even worse because of this. He actually thinks I’m crying on his kitchen counter because I don’t feel like going swimming today and I don’t know how to tell him otherwise without ruining everything. How do you go from jokes about perishing and complaining about the heat to coming out? How do you safely turn around a situation that’s surrounded by steep cliffs.
“That’s not- I’m not- That’s not the problem.” My voice is much less stable than intended and the words just don’t want to come out right.
“What’s wrong then?” He wraps an arm around me slowly, making sure that I’m okay with he contact by giving me the obvious chance to move away. I don’t deserve such an amazing man, especially when I’ve been pretty much lying to him for so long.
“I need to tell you something.” I keep my voice down, as if staying quiet will make the whole situation disappear. Unfortunately for me, Roman had always had perfect hearing.
“Alright, what is is darling?” His eyes are intense in a serious and caring way. I can’t help but to think about a different type of intensity in those eyes, an angrier one.
Here’s the thing about Roman. He’s always seemed to support the entirety of the LGBT+ community. He’ll wear all the flags to events, once including a trans flag colored bracelet that I loved. He’ll get into full on yelling matches with any protesters and aggressively praises everyone else. It was brave and amazing, but that doesn’t mean I can be sure he’ll support me. There’s a huge difference between supporting a community and having a partner in that community. I look up at him again and the tears fall freely from my eyes. I don’t think I could ever handle losing him.
“Sorry Roman, I just…” My unstable hands come up to wipe away the tears, Roman quickly takes over the job. I try to concentrate on stopping the sobs, crying isn’t going to help me if he ends up being mad. Pity isn’t something that would ever make him stay.
“It’s perfectly fine, what do you need to tell me?” His voice is calm and patient. This was the other type of situation that would make the bard act fall. He either had to be confused or his comforting therapist mode for me.
“I-I should have told you before he starting dating and now you’re going to hate me forever.” Any tears Roman managed to wipe away are swiftly replaced.
“How could I ever hate my perfect little boy?” He gives me a soft hug and pulls me into his body. This feels much better, but I can’t help to realize that this was a compromising position If he was mad and decided to hurt me because of it. I’ve read the news stories. I know the type of danger I could be putting myself in if I didn’t know Roman like I thought I did.
“I’m not Roman, I’m sorry, but I’m really not. I’m so sorry.” My breathing hitched and I lose the ability to form complete sentences for the time being.
“Oh, of course you still are baby. You could never do anything that would change that.” Another rush of shame courses through me because how could I have lied to such a supportive and loving person? What the fuck is wrong with me?
“I’m trans.” My voice is smaller than my self-confidence and that says a lot. Roman stays entirely silent and I know he heard me because of this. He’s not asking me to speak up, he’s not questioning me at all, and he’s defiantly not trying to comfort me anymore. He also hasn’t pushed me away yet.
The silence of moments like this always kill me. Roman says nothing for nearly two full minuets, but that one-hundred-twenty seconds feels more like years. It feels like the awkward length of time after you make a reference nobody understands. The kind of silence that’s as long as it is shaming. You know that the lack of noise is pure shunning. The stillness hanging in the air stings, as if it was actively giving me social frostbite without the warmth of words.
“Roman…” My former tears are suddenly just gone. Maybe my metaphorical chill froze them.  Maybe the literal heat had evaporated them. When he finally speaks, I can’t bear to look at him.
“Which way?” Those were not the first words I was expecting.
“FTM.” The ‘F’ tastes bitter in my mouth, like one-hundred pecan dark chocolate.
“And you honestly though I would hate you because of that?” His voice still shows no sign of anger, actually he sounds hurt. What am I meant to say to that?
“Yeah, I-I guess that was dumb. I just- since you’re gay and I’m not…” I can’t finish the sentence.
“Don’t talk like that Virgil. You’re still my little boy. Nothing changes.” He sounds oddly cold, but not in a mean way. Cold as in like a computer. Like a machine still trying to process foreign information. Still, his words are comforting, and despite the heat starting to bother me again, I snuggle up to him more.
“You aren’t mad that I didn’t tell you sooner?” The fan’s cool breeze hits me as I put myself back into it’s range.
“No, I understand it’s probably a very difficult thing to do. Especially if you were convinced I’d hate you.” His hand rests on my leg, his fingers gently feeling the fabric of my shorts.
“Sorry anyways. I should have made sure that you were okay with this before we got together.” I feel Roman’s head fall sideways, resting on mine.
“I’m sorry if you felt like you couldn’t safely tell me.” His voice is smooth and at that moment, I remember exactly why I fell in love with him in the first place.
The room is silent once again, but this time it’s peaceful. We sit on his kitchen counter, holding each other and ignoring the heat as best we can. I know Roman will have a million and two questions for me later. I also know he understands that now isn’t the time to ask them. I feel a sense of blissful relief I haven’t experienced in a long time. It’s like I’d been holding my breath this whole relationship and now I’m breathing the fresh, free mountain air. The moment is perfect and warm, and not just because of the weather. I’m finally sure that everything is okay.
“Hey Ro?” My voice comes out in a purr of language.
“Yes handsome?” I can feel another wave of red wash over my features.
“I love you more than I love wolves.” I can practically feel the confusion spreading across his flawless face. Boy, does he have a lot of confusing trans related jokes to catch up on now that I can make them.
“I have absolutely no clue what you are referencing, but I love you as well.” He nuzzles against me, and everything is back to normal.

Meet: @thereformedchristian I’m Christian. I started my journey 2.5 years ago. I looked in the mirror one day and said “What the fuck?” I was 360lbs. I felt great. I’d been bigger all my life—confident, outgoing, big personality. My mirror moment was the 1st time I’d been consciously aware of how large I was living. Food was a source of comfort. Sad? Eat. Happy? Eat. In hindsight, I had a lack of substantive relationships; food was a constant. Food was not only weighing me down, but severely impaired my dating potential. So, I put it down and set out on a journey to look good naked and here we are today, 120lbs lighter by eating clean. To me, body positivity is owning where you are, right now, and loving it. I wake up, look in the mirror and say “Okurrr.” I have good and bad days. I focus on the destination but don’t forget to enjoy the journey. I take time to reflect, acknowledge and be proud of the lifestyle changes I’ve made. Starting tip: Do it for you and you only. Realize that what works for others may not work for you. Find your “why” and don’t lose sight of it. Commit to your new life but remember where you came from. Be your own biggest supporter. You can do this! . 📌 Wlstories is a SUPPORT GROUP.
