The Shofar Breaks Your Heart
by Dane Kuttler
When you give a girl a shofar – no, not a proper instrument of G-d, but a rough-cut horn with no real mouthpiece her aunt brings back from a trip to Jerusalem, don’t make it easy.
Put it up on the shelf in the living room where its curled promise of a shout will tempt her until she can reach it on tiptoe.
Tell her no one has ever found its voice, that she will only make it grunt, bray and sputter like the animal it came from.
Then give her a few years.
Give her an empty garage and a neighborhood Jewish enough to understand what it’s hearing so she can practice until tiny tekiot burst forth from the scrap of ram.
She will be the only one who can ever shape its sounds, can bend the call to tekiah, round off nine drops of t’ruah wailing, fling the anguished cry of a sh’varim from its mouth.
Let her brag about this. Remember that children are not humble creatures, that the simple act of being heard is their great triumph. Let her be heard.
Bring her to Hebrew school. Teach her the story of the rabbi who told his students that he would put the words of Torah on their hearts; that the words would only find their way in when the students’ hearts broke. Let her sit with that tale for as long as it takes for her own heart to shatter, for torah and poetry and forgiveness find their way inside,
play her Leonard Cohen. Let him croon about the cracks in everything, that’s how the light gets in, let her begin searching for light, ask her where she thinks the cracks come from, give her Auschwitz, give her Torquemada, give her pogrom and quota and blacklist, the ashes of all her burnt bridges, give her avinu malkenu, ashamnu, ashamnu, ashamnu,
watch her break her heart with her fist.
Give her the shofar. Let the horn steal her breath, let her begin to understand that she’s not holding a dead piece of animal, but a living prayer.
Teach her: after every blast you can hear the echo of the still small voice.
If you listen for it, you can hear the calls for the wild cries they are; salute them with a straight back when they yank you from your amidah; and should you hear a shofar blower struggle and gasp and strain for each call, imagine yourself a trapped animal, desperate to be heard.
When it’s over, Close your eyes.
Be. Broken. Here. Before G-d and your people. Be. Cracked.
feel the light and the words come in.

Hey question is Calculator a WFA only villain or from the comics?
From what I found, he is the same as the Calculator who was created in the 70s. He was introduced in the extra story of Detective Comics 463 which was actually mainly focused on the Atom, although it featured a variety of heroes including Green Arrow, Elongated Man, and the Caped Crusader himself. He was created by Bob Rosakis and Mike Grell. Basically his whole schtick was that he had a suit that allowed him to "calculate" the moves of heroes and defeat them using hard-light constructs generated from a little projector on his head.
He returned in the Birds of Prey 2010-2011 run by Gail Simone, Marc Andreyko, and Ardian Syaf. I'm pretty sure it was particularly in the 'Death of Oracle' arc, as he is the main antagonist of that event, but don't quote me on that. It's here that he becomes the "Anti-Oracle" and causes the arc, growing closer and closer to discovering her identity as she buries herself further into hiding. I don't think the hard-light constructs are present here at all, I'm pretty sure he's just a really good hacker now but again I've not read it, so take that with a grain of salt. He's not exactly what I'd call "obscure" as he has appeared across different medias, but he's a relatively deep cut to include in the story nonetheless and I like the choice to take someone so specific for Babs' arc as opposed to just covering the paralysis trauma or using her brother or something.
#Id honestly be surprised if Casually Comics doesnt do a video on him soon given this appearance#unless of course she already covered him before#but yeah there you go!#i missed doing proper (if not that in depth) research. i like going all scholarly#batman family#batman comics#batfamily#batfam#wayne family adventures#batman wayne family adventures#barbara gordon#batgirl#noah kuttler#calculator dc#birds of prey#oracle#babs gordon#batman#dc comics#dc#webtoon#oracle dc#barbara gordon oracle#gail simone#asks

getting really into more obscure rogues recently... so please, take my Calculator !
and a cameo from my Bookworm, who I'll post... later.
character info under the cut
Noah Kuttler was one of Barbara Gordon's closest friends throughout her middle and high school years. A fandom geek and an excellent hacker, he developed a tool that would help him determine the physical statistics of real-life superheroes. This information was then printed into zines, which he shared with his fellow fanboy for record-keeping purposes. This passion turned to obsession, however, as his peers regularly doubted, criticized, and even stole from his work. Trying to keep his project afloat, Kuttler began to put himself in harm's way by stepping into hero fights, desperate to put something substantial on them to print. Eventually, collateral damage from an encounter with Superman left Kuttler grievously injured, requiring the removal of both his left arm and his voice box to save his life. Rather than acknowledge the limitations of his idols -- or even his own shortcomings -- Kuttler became antagonistic and bitter towards the very concept of heroes, an attitude aggravated by the delusions and loss he suffered after the accident. After a brief period of freelance work, Kuttler now works for the Penguin under the pseudonym "Calculator", remotely providing villains with vital information on how to take out down the caped crusader and any number of his so-called friends.

Okay, listen, I love WFA with my entire heart, and I appreciate the creators SO SO much. But... This episode wasn't in my top ten to say the least.
So, this episode was fine. And I 100% understand that Babs must have some form of PTSD. Now, I'm VERY biased because Jason Todd is my never gonna happen boyfriend, so I get that.
I just think this episode was a little unnecessary. I didn't really like the pacing, I thought it was a little slow. And the whole "in her head" dialogue or whatever it's called.
I really liked the little Batgirl scene, and it has been a while since Harper said a word. (I forgot about her honestly). And I'm hoping to learn more about Noah Kuttler! :)

Teen Titans Go! The Calculator
The Calculator is a minor villain who debuted only in "Belly Math", in which the Teen Titans are to fight him with common core math problems.
Noah Kuttler, also known as the Calculator, was originally a costumed villain. When he discovered the existence of Oracle, he decided to fulfil the same overwatch role for villains. He was one of the core members of the Secret Society of Super-Villains.
