Having a fictional culture with both good and bad mixed takes is good and juicy, and feels very real. However i won't understand this fandom's hype over qunari politics. Women can't be warriors so when they want to show or develop fighting skills they're treated as men and they're men now. That's... Okay to fandom ppl? Exciting?
Don't get me wrong it's so interesting like the way they think gender works, sexism evolving into gender transition and how they're executed etc etc it's all good I'm not criticising writing here. It's more like the way people got excited over it like "look they have a word for trans people!!" And the context is that women not being allowed to fight. I'm not even sure if all of these aqun-athlok warriors are trans men at heart / just accepting to be a man just to fight and sacrificing their gender for it...
I still think aqun-athlok is a wonderful word and idea but in Qunari culture it's just reflecting on the place a person has in society, and by place i mean job, they don't have concept of individuality
no i agree honestly. i do actually love an oppressive fantasy society (wearing my giant "I ❤️ FANTASY HOMOPHOBIA" tshirt) but the aqun-athlok just being treated as a nice trans rights thing (in-universe and by fandom) doesn't make much sense to me. the way women "becoming" men in order to fill a man's role in society and trans men transitioning are lumped together without acknowledgement doesn't feel great tbh, it walks into transphobic mindsets in a way that makes me think they just straight up didn't know what they were talking about with krem. it also tells us nothing about trans women in qunari society, which WOULD be interesting if they were making a point about transmisogyny buuut i don't think they were
tbh i just find the qunari's whole thing iffy so i don't really play in that space all that much. people more knowledgeable about this have probably posted about it but it does just not come across great that they're these invading misogynistic fanatics belonging to a mysterious and violent "race" with a religion that is consistently treated as a threat. it feels like something that belongs in an 80s/90s fantasy world. i really hope they've walked this back a little in dav but considering what i read of tevinter nights i doubt they will
#ask#anonymous#the last point is also why im uncomfortable with bull being extremely sexualised ngl#i've seen people say bull was talking about the aqun-athlok thing just to make krem feel accepted but that's just a headcanon tbh

Tastes of Thedas Lore:
New Fauna, Food, Ingredients, and General Lore Introduced by the Cookbook
I'm putting this all in one list separate from the master list so it will be easy to find. I am also including all the information we've known from the sample pages for completeness. Source of all this information is from Dragon Age: The Official Cookbook: Taste of Thedas.
I have not included anything that was mentioned in previous media, for a complete list of all the lore mentioned in the cookbook as well as the other sources that mention it, please see this post. I'm putting all this below the cut in case you are trying to avoid spoilers, as well as the post itself is long.
NOTE: I did not include any of the ingredients from the recipes themselves, just the lore blurbs as it has been made clear the recipes not only do not match up, but are also rooted more in reality than Thedas.
Culture
Anderfels has a robust pig farming industry, the climate being well suited for them to grow to a generous size.
Kirkwall is known for their crab cakes.
Nevarran's culinary practices view food to be a feast for the eyes and mouth and thus place heavy importance on plating.
Orzammar holds a competition for the Best Sauce and participants will hatch plots to steal recipes of competitors. Leading recipes to be closely guarded secrets.
Some Orzammar dwarves insist that the proximity to lyrium and darkspawn only improve the flavor of edible deep mushrooms.
Tevinter seems to be the origins of cupcakes. They historically would use them to poison people.
There are custard connoisseurs across Thedas.
General Notes on lore
Isabela has a drinking game based on the number of enemies one has. The game has killed at least one man.
Krem suggested that Bull and the Chargers use the rice they were paid with to make rice pudding.
Krem seems to hold knowledge of all dishes the Chargers eat.
Varric and The Iron Bull love sweets.
Vivienne eats croissants every morning.
Vivienne is known for dressing blancmange with white chocolate curls and whole jasmine flowers, serving the dish on a black plate.
Wyverns, like phoenix, can be deadly if not prepared right.
Fauna
Ayesleigh Gulabi Goats - Rivain
Cuttlefish - Waters around Antiva
Poussin - I want to note this is usually a term used for a young chicken or spring chicken used in a recipe, but the lore blurb alludes to it being the name of an actual bird.
Prawns - Waters around Antiva
Shrimp - Waters around Antiva
Flora
Bitter Greens - Nevarra
Black Cherry - Orlais
Black Lichen - Orzammar/Deep Roads
Blood Orange - Nevarra
Chickpea - Rivain
Leek - Unclear origins, likely Antiva
Lemon Verbena - Rivain
Lentil - Universal staple, unclear of origin
Mango - Unknown origin, but it is a common enough ingredient for Orlesian nobility.
Nettle - Mentioned to be in Ferelden, unclear if that is the only origins
Red Grapes - Unknown origin, but it is a common enough ingredient for Orlesian nobility.
Rhubarb - Ferelden
Sweet Cherry - Orlais
Spinach - Unclear origin
Watercress - Frostbacks in origin potentially
Food Dishes
In the cookbook, it does note that there are multiple varieties across Thedas for certain dishes. I listed the regions given for the recipe provided in the cookbook as they are either "classics" or traditional for that region. The ones with multiple variations that are mentioned, I have marked with a **.
Apple Grenade - Antiva
Bark Bread - suggested alternative to black lichen
Black Lichen Bread - Orzammar, as it is also plainly referred to as "lichen bread"
Blancmange - Orlais
Blood Orange Salad - Nevarra
Couscous Salad - Rivain
Crab Cakes - Kirkwall
Crouton - Unclear, simply mentioned one needs to cook chickpeas to a "crouton-like crispiness."
Crow Feed - Antiva
Eggs à la Val Foret - Orlais
Ferelden Farmer's Pie - A term for a type of pie; such as the nug bacon and egg pie.
Fish Pockets - Seheron
Flat Bread - Nevarra
Forest Fruit Cobbler - Dalish
Found Cake - Ferelden
Fried Crab Legs - a substitute version of fried young giant spiders, Orzammar in origin, but substitution created by Devon
Fried Young Giant Spiders - Orzammar
Gnocchi - Antiva
Goat Custard - Rivain **
Grilled Poussin - Chasind
Gurgut Roast with Lowlander Spices and Mushroom Sauce - Avvar
Hearty Scones - Ferelden
Honey Carrots - Orlais **
Lamprey Cake - Not actually made with lamprey, just themed. Recipe created by Devon.
Lentil Soup - City Elf **
Merrill's Blood Soup - Dalish
Nettle Soup - origins unclear
Nug Bacon and Egg Pie - Ferelden
Paella - Antiva
Pastry Pockets - recipe originates with the Grey Wardens, cookbook notes of the Orlesian Grey Warden variation **
Poison Stings - Unclear, presumably Tevinter as they were Dorian's snack when traveling from Tevinter.
Potato and Leek Soup - Ferelden
Pumpkin Bread - Tevinter
Red Grape Compote - Unknown origin, but it is a common enough in use for Orlesian nobility.
Rice Pudding - Unclear as rice comes from Rivain and Antiva, but Krem supplies the recipe.
Roasted Prawns - a substitute for cave beetles, Orzammar in origin, but substitution created by Devon
Snail and Watercress Salad - Avvar in origins, but created by Devon with the Avvar to make snails more palatable to lowlanders.
Sour Cherries in Cream - Orlais
Spiced Jerky - Dalish **
Strawberry and Rhubarb Cobbler - Ferelden
Stuffed Cabbage - Ferelden
Stuffed Deep Mushrooms - Orzammar
Stuffed Vine Leaves - Tevinter
Sweet and Sour Cabbage Soup - Ferelden
Traviso Energy Balls - Antiva
Tzatziki - Tevinter
Turnip and Mutton Pie - Ferelden
Unidentified Meat - Tevinter
Yogurt Dip - Nevarra
Food Ingredients
Couscous - Rivain
Nug Bacon - Ferelden
Peanut Butter - Unknown origin, presumably Seheron as peanuts are mentioned in Sten's dream or Antivan given the recipe mentioning it.
Puff Pastry - Orlais
White Chocolate - Unclear the origins, but is used in Orlesian cuisine.
Whipped Cream - Unclear origins, potentially universal but noted to be used in Orlesian cooking.
Suggested Food
As in these might be eaten or not, it is unclear if the narrator was simply suggesting them out of pure speculation due to the dish's mystery.
Dracolisk
Dragon Urine - Suggested that the drink name may or may not be figurative.
Giant
Additional Notes
I included fried young giant spiders on this list because it is technically different from the roasted giant spider legs we see in the TTRPG adventure Buried Pasts.
Stuffed Vine Leaves may have appeared previously in the comic Deception. However I didn't feel I could make that determination unlike the desserts clearly shown in the comic Magekiller that are easily identified to me.
Quillback was mentioned in Unidentified Meat but isn't included as suggested or speculated food due to it being eaten by Inquisition soldiers in the Western Approach.
Saffron isn't a new spice to Thedas, as it was originally mention in the Last Court. It's origins seem to come from Antiva both due to the recipe and the fact they import most spices from Antiva in Serault.
Roasted turkey was first mentioned in the Dragon Age TTRPG. Thought it is common in the Free Marches, this dish is also popular among the Chasind.
Cupcakes seem to originate from Tevinter, as Cherry Cupcakes have been tied to them both in the cookbook but also the comic Magekiller.
Pumpkin Bread referenced to Tevinter, however we know that other nations such as Ferelden and Orlais, also grow pumpkins. The dish likely originates from Tevinter given the reference of it being used to tempt one to visit the Imperium. But thought it would be worth noting that pumpkins also exist in the south.
Licorice is previously mentioned by Dorian, referencing salted black licorice candy. But it may very well come from Riviain as the Rivaini tea blend has a variation that uses licorice root and they export the tea blend.
Additionally it seems peppermint and oregano also originate in Rivain.
Chocolate is not a new item to Thedas, however it is known to be imported to other nations from the Donnarks and Rivain.

Happy WIP Wednesday it’s late, I still need to eat, and I’m giving you the cursed summary of 4am conversations that are becoming cursed fanfic of the Four Heralds AU! Enjoy
1. Cullen needs to be distracted from lyrium
2. The other heralds will do it nicely
3. Cadash walks in tosses a metal ring on his desk, says a man’s name, and leaves
4. Cullen needs to ask Leliana what this means the first time (it means Cadash has made a cock ring for someone at Skyhold and Cullen gets to deliver it)
5. It is the only thing that always works (he did not think he needed to know how big anyone else’s dick was but with the knowledge in front of him…) When Cullen is less scared of cock rings they instead deposit two very small rings and say Dorian
6. Dorian has pierced nipples
7. Cullen is consternated
8. Lavellan and Cole come to check on him in the night like the creepy little guys they are (see: Sleepers) and learn Dorian has pierced nipples
9. Does Lavellan know what nipple piercings are
10. Does Cole know what nipples are
11. Does Cole have nipples
12. Cullen cannot ask anyone ever especially not Candy
13. No one can prove Cole has nipples (Depending on how spirity Cole is the presence of nipples may/may not be partially based on how other people perceive him and what they expect to find)
14. Krem casually shares that nipples can also fall off, not everyone has nipples Cullen
15. This is the opposite of helping but he’s not remembered lyrium fucking exists in days
16. Lavellan has to check Dorian’s nipples have not since fallen off
17. Clearly the piercings hold the nipples on

Stemquisition Part 3 (In Hushed Whispers) - I violated the principle of causality and all I got was this lousy necklace
In which we have to go back...to the present!
Dorian, a much nicer mage from Tevinter, holds a secret meeting with me away from prying eyes, but right next to a small army of demons. He starts spouting magical technobabble about time travel that, frankly, does not sound scientific.
But he reassures me that he helped to develop this time magic, so he would know, and it makes as much sense as anything else at this point. To impress Alexius, I gather 25 Power doing the adventuring equivalent of filing paperwork, so he finally deigns to meet me. He tries to negotiate the terms under which he might loan out his army of disposable slaves future Tevinter citizens. I'm really more interested in the time travel. How did you do that.
He tries to have me executed, but Leliana remembers her adventures in Redcliffe, and she has her assassins go through a secret tunnel, which must have been a lot of fun. But it's not fun for Alexius' guards, and Alexius decides to erase me from time in a sickass green swirly portal.
He accidentally sends me into the future instead, but an entire year in my absence renders the world totally dominated by Corypheus. So, really, he's largely succeeded, entirely by accident. We scientists call that serendipity, which in Thedas is also the name of a transgender sex worker. She's a barrel of laughs and, despite living in the single deadliest city in Thedas, has not suffered violence like more than half of transgender sex workers. My point is that we should decriminalize sex work immediately, and also that Serendipity is not a good character.
Fortunately there's a much better trans character in my own army - Krem, along with his boss, The Iron Bull. Hey, how are those lovable rogues doing? My gang? My squad? My goons? My buddies? My pals? My sweet boyos? My chuckling chums?
...okay, I'm getting some "not so good"s.
Iron Bull is infected with red lyrium, as is Varric. That's especially bad because Varric hates red lyrium. Go on. Ask him why he hates red lyrium. Or not, he'll tell you anyway. There was this adventure in the Deep Roads...
We have to get back in time before Leliana kills Varric. With her thighs. I just learned she could do that, in a scene that would be pretty hot if it didn't immediately follow a year of grisly torture.
Despite being an accomplished spymaster who has every intention of sending me back in time, Leliana doesn't want to talk about what happened, but I've seen enough clues in my investigation of the future. She's been...experimented on...oh no.
They've used science...for EVIL! Which is admittedly pretty par for the course in Thedas. There aren't a whole lot of experiments whose subjects aren't "terrified prisoners" and whose methodology is more robust than "I WILL HAVE YOUR PATHETIC BLOOD!" What a shameful attitude. No wonder we're living in a medieval world despite it being common knowledge that there's a formula for gunpowder and that it is possible to make explosives that can level a city. I need to fix this, but first I need to get back...to the present!
Varric and The Iron Bull help Leliana hold off Corypheus' army while Dorian reverses the time magic and I...what am I doing to help? I'm not a mage, so...I guess I'm just there? Honestly I feel a bit bad about mostly standing around while my fabulous friendarinos give their lives to give me as much time as they have arrows.
Before I can determine the arrow-time conversion rate, Leliana dies as she lived: not having a good time. But me and Dorian escape just in time. And through time. It's time magic. Alexius surrenders, having played all two of his cards (easily-defeated guards and faulty time magic).
Later, I coerce Alexius into sharing the secrets of time magic. The ramifications could be world-changing! A mere glimpse into this field could revolutionize everything we think we know about reality! Against my allies' warnings, I authorize Alexius to continue this line of research.
The result is an amulet which makes my skills recharge a few seconds faster.

4. What are your Inquisitor's parents names? Do they have siblings? What are their names? & 25. What's one thing you wish your Inquisitor could have done that wasn't an option? (e.g. become Divine, alternate romance, different quest outcome, different region map, etc.) - @wickedapostate
4. What are your Inquisitor's parents names? Do they have siblings? What are their names?
Oooo this is a fun one.
Lexi's mothers name is Ingrid, a huntress for the clan and where she learned how to not murder the plants she grew. Her birth father is out the picture since he fell in love with a human woman and left the clan to be with her but she has a step-dad called Goran who picked up the slack, he's the clan crafter with a penchant for sneaking in metalwork and they'd make little sculptures together which is why she loves the forgemaster so much, he reminds her of him. She does have a sister, her name is Nala and she's her oldest sister. She's a warrior who is probably more capable than her at everything but magic and would have been a killer Inquisitor.
25. What's one thing you wish your Inquisitor could have done that wasn't an option? (e.g. become Divine, alternate romance, different quest outcome, different region map, etc.)
This one's a hard one because there's definitely a few things I wish we could have done differently. One particular one is having Morrigan want the well of sorrows. I understand she's been studying Eluvians ext but you know who would have been better for that? Merrill. She has the Dalish knowledge as a Keepers First, a curiosity for the Eluvian's and you can't tell me she wouldn't chase that link to the elves to understand it and actually think of a way to better the Dalish through it. I adore Morrigan, and I get it's to tie in the Flemeth thing but I don't entirely understand why Morrigan's the one who needs the well. (I did love seeing her again with Kieran but fhuifhre pls Bioware)
The Qun situation in Bull's quest was... hard to stomach. I had to save the Chargers but the fact the Inquisition couldn't salvage that or attempt to was... odd. I suppose it comes down to you win some or you lose some and the Qun is pretty strict.
A silly one is Lexi had a crush on Krem and would have absolutely been a giddy mess if we even got a crumb of being able to romance him. I admittedly got more attached to the Chargers than I should have.
In the Solas romance I wish there was a way to actually discuss certain subjects that doesn't just come down to yes manning him or blatant 'I don't care.' (This would be asking too much because I don't think any of the dialog for anyone let's you properly not be extremely agreeing or completely against someone.) Especially on Dalish matters though because the game never lets us mention that the culture is learning and trying to grow. With every information they get, they adapt and learn. And that there's ways to approach it that isn't condescending. She turns down the whole Vallaslin removal because they aren't slave marks anymore. I'd have liked to be able to express that to him. That cultures can reclaim history and grow from it as opposed to repeating it, and that learning the truth wouldn't destroy them, they're allowed to have bad pasts, what matters most is how they grow and learn from such starts. Their whole goal has been learning the truth. But to go into this amount of depth would mean all races too should be able to have these meaningful responses to their own issues. Idk if that's really feasible in game mechanics either with how they set up the dialog wheel. It might have been an option if they had it like Origins but that's my only gripe there.
(I'll stop there because then I'd go on a tangent about the mage vs templar war and that's like swinging a bat in a room full of hornets.)

A Path Once Taken
also on AO3
“Love him and let him love you. Do you think anything else under heaven really matters?” - James Baldwin, Giovanni’s Room
“Wait.”
Gideon steps back as he says it, lifting a hand into the gap between their faces. Dorian opens his eyes. His own hands slip from Gideon’s arms as he draws back.
“Is something the matter?” he asks.
“I…there’s something I have to tell you.”
A flash of worry crosses Dorian’s face. “Couldn’t it wait another few minutes?”
Gideon chuckles. “Not in good conscience.”
“Are you alright?”
Gideon smiles, in a way he hopes is reassuring. “Yes, I’m fine. It’s nothing like that. It’s just…”
And he trails off, lost for what to say. With the Iron Bull, it had been easy. “Hey, you know Krem? Well, me too! You still up for it?” Dorian…Gideon has no idea if he’s even encountered the concept. It certainly doesn’t seem like the kind of knowledge that Magister Halward blood-magic-my-son-out-of-sleeping-with-men Pavus would be keen for any child of his to have. Not that the scope of Dorian’s education was ever limited by the will of his elders; he’d studied at a dozen Circles in Tevinter, researched time magic with Alexius, and probably read every book in Thedas to boot. But no one can know everything. Gideon might fall into one of those rare gaps in Dorian’s understanding, and then what? How does he go about explaining something so fundamental and obvious to him?
(The Iron Bull had been up for it, so Gideon has that under his belt, at least).
“The Dalish, we have this concept of shiralen’ashen,” he says, eventually. “Literally, it means ‘journeyed person.’ As in, you start as one gender, and become another.”
If Dorian is confused, it doesn’t show on his face, not from underneath his usual artful smile. “Might I be witnessing the first steps of your journey to womanhood, Inquisitor?” he asks. So he does have some idea.
“I hope not. That was where I started,” Gideon replies, in a tone he soon realises is entirely too casual. “I mean, I started as a baby, but…I’m shiralen’ashin. I became a man.”
The apprehension that follows is a familiar sensation, like all of his insides are being crammed up under his ribcage. However many times he says it, however much he trusts the person he’s saying it to, a small part of him expects the worst.
Of course, Dorian doesn’t give him the worst. He takes Gideon’s hands in his own, kisses the line of his knuckles. “Thank you, for trusting me.”
Gideon exhales a laugh. “I had a front-row seat to your business. It seemed only fair to share mine.”
“You saw the kind of reaction my business usually gets in Tevinter,” he retorts.
“A country in which you’re a social pariah,” Gideon reminds him.
“There is that about it,” he concedes. He reaches out, fiddles idly with Gideon’s collar. “So, where were we?” He taps his chin. “Ah, yes, I believe I was about to kiss you.”
“If you still want to.”
Dorian’s answer is the press of his lips to Gideon’s own. Gideon is hyperaware of every point of contact: the hands on his waist, the hair under his own fingers, the nudge of chest against chest. Dorian is the first to pull away, and whisper warm breath against a pointed ear.
“I see you enjoy playing with fire, Inquisitor.”
After all that, Gideon might agree.

Cas, give us the Naoise lore. Gender thoughts, martial ability thoughts. How's he taking the whole dead family situation? The suddenly a warden situation? What does he make of Alistair's immediately shovelling all responsibility onto his shoulders? Who does he want to kill most between Morrigan and Alistair so far? Anything else you've got on your chest you want to share 😌
Naoise !!!
Gender Thoughts
Ohh boy, here we go. Lex knowing immediately that Naoise is written as a trans man despite me not giving any previous inclination… iconic, actually. you are correct i have lots of gender thoughts about him!
Naoise Cousland is beloved by his family, and especially by his parents. I believe wholeheartedly that he clued into the fact that he was trans at a young age and demanded to be seen as such, the way a spoiled second son would demand anything else. Sure, there was worried discussion between Eleanor and Bryce about how to handle the wider social ramifications--and what about heirs and marriage?--but ultimately they could not bring themselves to deny their son anything and so they helped him to comfortably transition. Doing it younger was smart; noble pages could begin training as early at 7, such as Fergus did, but Naoise did not show any knightly inclinations.
(edit: i meant to say smth here about mage top surgery in his teens. i think it's possible and i think the couslands could have realistically hidden that knowledge from others)
With that in mind, Naoise doesn't suffer from what we might consider "stereotypical" gender dysphoria, or at least in the way comparatively that Mahanon does. He passes, he's gendered correctly, he's widely regarded as a man by his family and his peers. Hell, Arl Howe offers him his daughter, Delilah, in marriage.
That being said--he does suffer from internalizing Ferelden's societal (and toxic) ideas of masculinity. He mimicked what he saw as a noble's second son… (caveat: it seems that being gay is somewhat acceptable [or at least not frowned upon] in Ferelden but given what we see of Krem in Inquisition, I'm extrapolating/hc'ing what being trans in noble society might look like) … being accused of effeminate behavior/being trans/etc would likely bring him to challenge said person to a fight to restore honor. He wants to go off and fight, and says as much during the origin, despite the fact that his parents see him as more readily inclined to take over the teyrnship. Does he take it as a slight against his martial abilities? A jab that he would be more readily accepted as a homemaker? Probably not, but the thoughts linger… he's mostly soothed by them insisting that they cannot risk "both heirs", which assures him that their feelings haven't changed.
Martial Thoughts
Naoise isn't a great warrior like Fergus is, ready to charge the front lines or shield his brothers from the blows. Naoise is analytical, slender, and works best from a distance. Trained in archery, he tends to linger back and pin/compromise as many opponents as possible while his fellows charge. If the line breaks or they need help, he's dual-wielding daggers with speed and elegance… I suppose his mother did teach him SOME of her swashbuckling ways. There's a swagger to how he moves that isn't typical of knights… maybe something more maritime?
Grief + Warden
Naoise, admittedly, isn't coping well with the loss of his entire family. Not only does Dairren die (y'know, the son of Lady Landra who he managed to convince to go to bed with him that night), but so did his innocent sister-in-law and baby nephew, the household, his dad, his mum, Ser Gilmore, etc. He's screaming, crying, throwing up the whole way to Ostagar. He only manages to get it together by the time they're climbing up the steps to meet with King Cailan----and then he's told he won't be able to see Fergus until after the battle. Fine, that's fine. He didn't want to give Fergus the horrible news yet anyway.
Then the battle at Ostagar goes to shit; King Cailan can't make good on his promise for justice, Loghain has branded him a traitor, and Fergus is likely dead. The grief starts anew, but this time with purpose. While Alistair is grieving Duncan, Naoise doesn't grieve at all, he's PLOTTING. He is plotting how going to Redcliffe can help him achieve his greater goal--stopping the Blight is secondary. Avenging his family comes first.
To that end, he thinks little of the Grey Wardens. Duncan strong-armed him into the position by manipulating his dying father. If that wasn't a cunning, manipulative, political move, he doesn't know what is. Fine, he'll just have to be smarter, wittier, more cunning. One step ahead of everyone, including his own order. He's not grieving them after Ostagar, he's reassessing how his position as one of the only Wardens left can be used as a means to his own ends.
Alistair + Morrigan
Traveling with these two (plus his mabari and his eagle!) has quickly shown Naoise, the spoiled second-born son used to getting his own way, just how ANNOYING it is to have siblings. They're bickering all the time, he's bickering with them, none of them can agree on anything, the dog is barking, etc etc. It gets to the point where he whips out the "WELL MY WHOLE FAMILY WAS MURDERED. I DIDN'T ASK TO BE HERE" more than once and it gets them to shut up. He sympathizes with Alistair's grief and Morrigan's reluctance but it all GRATES on him.
By the time he gets comfortable enough to be bratty back, they all want to kill each other. I don't think I could tell you which one wants blood more.
#this went on forever i am so sorry#there's just... a lot of thoughts#and headcanons#which i am willing to discuss ofc#askbox#my mutuals my beloveds#naoise cousland#naoise meta#text post#Cas meta

My issue with this is that the words “trans” and non-binary are the real world consequence and rebuttal to the phenomenon of sex and sexuality being fashioned under a formal umbrella of scientific study, which is why these words are academic and have latin roots to begin with. The relationship between sexuality and human psychology is infrangible. You cannot simply plop these words into this universe like “oh Tevinter has Latin, therefore we use Latin”. I consider that extreme laziness. Many languages in many different cultures have had terms and turns of phrase (of varying levels of derision or pejorative, I’ll grant) to describe gender nonconformity that were not scientific because again, these studies of human sexuality as it relates to quantifiable, measurable human behavior were not widely established, and even that which existed took a long time to percolate to the collective consciousness.
To just go with the words “trans” or “non-binary” shows a distinct lack of imagination and the writers’ disinterest with writing from the actual perspective of a Medieval-Renaissance fantasy world. Absolutely no creativity, no desire to genuinely put themselves in the shoes of a person who does not live in a world where the collected knowledge of sexuality and human behaviors evolved from philosophical and comparative cultural ponderings to rigorous areas of scientific study.
They used the word aqun-athlok for Krem in DAI. They quite LITERALLY could have come up with a series of made-up syllables that meant non-binary or trans in whatever language they wanted since, you know, this isn’t the real world and the whole point of a fictional world is that you can do whatever. Tevene is Greek and Latin inspired. Inspiration should be used purely for vibes, not 1:1 recreation, not copy-paste.
They had a golden opportunity to expand their world’s language lexicon, to channel their inner Tolkien, to explore the power of crafting a personal term for yourself with the limited language and experience you possess (a la Korzybski) , and instead just went “nah, just use the modern IRL words :) “ as if we don’t already have examples of what Tevene looks like (hint: it’s not exact Latin/Greek)
But that’s just me.
Maevaris Tilani: Inventor of Transgenderism
So, I'm one of the people who was initially put out by the use of the words "trans" and "nonbinary" in Veilguard. NOT the concepts, mind you - we've had those for a while. Just the words.
Then I had some thoughts about Maevaris Tilani. Let me take you on a journey.
First: I played a Shadow Dragon who, like myself, is a trans man. When I got the Varric's shaving mirror scene, he referred to himself specifically as trans. I thought that was kind of funky, since Krem hadn't had the word for it back in the day.
Then Taash starts going on their gender journey, and two things happen:
Neve directs them specifically to the Shadow Dragons for gender discussion.
This line from A Little Dragon Hatches: "The Shadow Dragons have some fancy terms. But using 'they' and knowing that? It feels good."
The Shadow Dragons have some fancy terms, huh? Sounds like they might be involved in setting up that language.
The Shadow Dragons who are run by Maevaris Tilani, transgender icon.
Mae has been a prominent trans woman in Tevinter for a while, and so I would completely believe that she would want language for the trans people that came after her.
Plus, Tevinter language is greek- and latin- based, so it's not unreasonable for her to derive those words.
So, my theory: In the 10 years since Inquisition, Maevaris Tilani has pioneered language around trans people, and that's why the Shadow Dragons all know trans and nonbinary.
Thank you for your time.

Hhgshufskk okay okay so I'm about to dump a lot on you and you are absolutely allowed to call me an idiot or homophobic or hate me or whatever –🍀 [1]
Okay so. I think I might be NB (she/her/they/them, maybe even just they/them), and, like. A lot of the characters I selfshipped either give off huge lesbian vibes or are lesbians (including Trizza, who, although not technically a coping mechanism, I am very attached to despite only selfshipping with her for a short time, as well as elwurd. A lot of characters, despite not selfshipping with them for a while, I am terribly attached to.) And I feel like it’s unfair to them, but I don’t wanna –🍀[2]
I don’t wanna give them up and I feel horrible and it’s hard to explain but I just… Hhhgahajhah I hate that I’m so bad at emotions and I hate that having my f/os comfort me has been mostly ruined by dumbass guilt and I hate that I’m dumping it on some stranger on the internet. I’m sorry. –🍀 [3
Firstly, there’s no need to apologize. What you’re going through is very confusing I understand & asking for help even from a stranger isn’t bad.
I’m not the best at advice but I have gone through a similar thing as you when I started questioning my gender & sexuality. Something important to remember is you self-ship with characters to make you happy. If it makes you happy & you’re not hurting anyone there’s no need to feel guilty.
Even if you’re just straight up NB, no gender not even leaning towards a certain gender, you’re F/Os are fictional & would still love you & you can still self-ship with them because its all up to you. You have to do what feels right for you. If that's not shipping with a certain character cause it makes you uncomfortable to do so now, okay that’s fair.
Another thing to remember is these characters are fictional & self-shipping with them cause of gender & sexuality is really up to you. If a character is a certain gender or sexuality & now you don’t wanna self-ship with them then that's okay, but don’t stop doing it cause you think that character wouldn’t wanna be with you anymore cause that’s not the case.
This is the best advice I can give & I hope you sort everything & continue to happily self-ship with your F/Os. If you need to ask anything else feel free to do so!!

I'm sorry but WHAT. Has anyone ever explained WHAT a Ben-Hassrath spy was doing in the capital of the Tevinter Imperium in the middle of a very long war between their people? I thought Bull spent most of a decade on Seheron before being assigned to Orlais, but from this exchange it sounds like he was in Minrathous long enough to know the city well and frequent the same areas and businesses, meaning he wasn't just passing through.
Like even if he was undercover as Tal-Vashoth during his Chargers phase (which, unlikely as Krem is kind of an outlaw from the Imperium) that's gotta raise red flags with the locals, right?? Did I miss some lore or backstory that explains this?
UNLESS. Maybe it's not true. Bull could simply be using knowledge of the Tevinter capital gained from his intelligence reports to get an "in" with Dorian. Now that I'm reading it again, he never said he'd been there himself. Not strictly lying, I guess, but he certainly could be being deceptive here to buddy up to Dorian like he does with other companions before his personal quest.

✨weekly fic roundup✨
fic I enjoyed this past week! please leave the authors a kudos and/or comment on these excellent works.
ASoIaF
But then comes the curses of diamonds and rings - gen wip
House Lannister is the next oldest Great House after the Starks, whose founder was cousins with Bran the Builder, and originally of the First Men. What if Jaime got some of those nifty old powers?
Every time that you lose it (Sing it for the world) - gen wip
A self-insert into Jaime Lannister, except this is a normal guy who doesn't know how a printing press works and just wants to raise kittens and play with a sword
Assassin’s Creed
Memory more perfect - leonardo da vinci/desmond miles wip
In hindsight, the whole thing is a little ludicrous. Hiring a man he doesn't know, a man who doesn't know himself, off the streets with not even the chance of checking his credentials… it's foolish beyond measure. He knows little of Desmond, and what he does know is not something that should inspire confidence. Homelessness, thievery, starvation, memory loss...
Leonardo does it anyway.
Sons of No One - ezio auditores/ofc wip
Altaïr reincarnates into the year 1476.
BNHA
Fulmination - gen so far, wip
Hold on just a moment, I'm a main character? Excuse me? No wait, excuse you! I'm not having it! No sir! Uh-uh, no! I refuse! You stay away from me Green Boy! I know what trouble you bring and you can bring it to someone else!
oc-insert!bakugou katsuki
Dragon Age
Few Against the Wind - solas/ofc wip
A woman falls from the sky just when she’s needed, what could it be but the work of the Maker? Why else should she speak in tongues but for being struck dumb by His grace? She would disagree if anyone asked her. Could ask her. But by the time she has the words it’s too late, and June is heralded the Herald of Andraste. Burdened with knowledge and an entire system of faith carried on her shoulders that she holds no stock in, an earthling muddles her way through Thedas.
Forbid/Forget - gen wip
From wisdom of the world comes wisdom of the self. Mastery of the self is mastery of the world. Loss of the self is the source of suffering. Suffering is a choice, and we can refuse it. Refuse the will of others exerted upon you, and strike in mastery.
self-insert!ketojan told from outsider pov
Rebel Archivist - krem aclassi/ofc wip
Elisabeth St-Laurent arrived in Thedas 9 years ago. She tried to be smart about it, not to get involved with "heroes", but there is only so much she can do without being in the Inquisition. She wants to help, but she'd rather not get murdered by Leliana, please.
Dragon Age & Naruto
Nobody Expects The Shinobi Inquisition - gen wip
In an act of classic Uchiha Melodrama, Uchiha Shisui leaps to his death... only to be thwarted when he wakes up, chained up and in a dungeon, with a splitting pain in his left hand.
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
Shakespeare in the Park - male dovahkiin/sanguine wip
He wakes up in a horse-drawn cart to see a scruffy man, with shaggy blond hair, bound and sitting in front of him. He knows exactly how this story goes. The question is, how can a theater kid from modern America convince an entire fantasy world that he belongs there?
Naruto
The Bewitching Hour - gen wip
Wherein a semi-si/oc gets reincarnated as some mythical japanese spirit instead of a badass ninja and proceeds to fuck with the plot. Features kidnapping small children, ancient mythology, and being a menace to ninja society.
Poor Timing - senju tobirama/uchiha sasuke
Sasuke’s thrown backwards in time to meet his soulmate, stuck in the past, he figures fuck it, maybe he can change the fate of his clan. But that’s only after he finishes panicking. Sort of Fix-it.
The Sandman
and in the waking world we wait and want - dream/hob gadling
“Did I hear you say,” the pale stranger asks, “that you have no intention of ever dying?”
Hob Gadling shrugs. No point in denying it.
“Yeah.”
Twilight
Before I Wake - edward cullen/ofc wip
This was NOT part of the plan. I was supposed to wake up after brain surgery and get better so I could do all the things my mom and I had been dreaming about for years. I was NOT supposed to end up in the Twilight universe inside of Bella fucking Swan's body.

Fem!Inquisitor has twins headcanon
Cole finds out first, even before the inquisitor- how does one body have three souls
Inquisitor- what?
Cole- well there is you but there is 2 little yous with different thoughts and feelings
After the babies are born, girl and boy, the crew is just one big parent group with Cole and Sera being more like big siblings.
Cole is extremely helpful when the babies are crying as he can feel exactly what is upsetting them.
As news spreads of a baby in skyhold, dignitaries visit and an argument quickly erupts. Half say there is 1 baby, half say there is like 30 babies. It is quickly apparent that visitors don't even know who the actual parents are. Leliana finds out and spreads even more rumors.
Cullen carrying a baby during battle practice and at the war table. Bull running drills with the Charges with a baby in his pocket. Josephine has a baby corner behind her desk. Dagna creates special cleansing runes to help keep the babies clean. In the rotunda, they install a bucket and winch to pass the baby between Solas, Dorian, and Leliana. Dorian always hands off the baby when a changing is needed. Sera has been banned from changing as she used the dirty diapers for pranks one time. Viviene says she hates kids, "nasty, dirty, gremlins. Almost as bad as Sera" but is always getting top quality items for the babies. Dorian and Vivienne buy the best fashions for the baby. It has become a war of Orlais fashion vs Tevinter fashion. Cole hides diapers around skyhold so there is always a fresh diaper within reach. Bull first commissions Blackwall to whittle a wooden ax for the babies. Others joined in and the babies quickly have an arsenal of wooden weapons. Krem gifts Bull a cloth hammock that fits between his horns to carry the babies and rock them to sleep. It started as a joke but he actually uses it.
Someone finds out it's the inquisitor twins
Person- So where are the babies
Inquisitor- Around
P- you don't know do you?
I- not even a little
P- aren't you worried
I- not at all. Why would I be?
P- what if someone tries to attack the baby?
Inquisitor scoffs and laughs, then stops - oh you're serious. I'd like to see someone try.
P-what do you mean?
I- the babies are always being watched, the kingdom can't tell how many babies there is or isn't, or who the parents are. Even if they find out, they are either with me, a royal ambassador, a seeker, a spy master, captain of the guards who was a Templar knight, a warden, the first enchanter, heir to a tevinter house, a famous dwarf with close connections to the merchant guild and friends with the hero of kirkwall, the best mercenary crew, a red Jenny, a literally spirit, an arcane advisor to empress Celine and daughter to the witch of the wild who has an elven god in them, a powerful mage with extensive knowledge of the fade, spirits, and lost knowledge, and other menagerie of others. If someone even dare tries, there is not a single place they could hide in the world where they would be safe.

Da:Inquisition college au
I don't have the energy to actually write it but here is the characters and plot of it. Feel free to use it, but please just tag me and @amloveabledeathmo so we can read it.
The inquisition are all college students of different ages
Characters
Corypheus is a history teacher that got fired the previous year thanks to the help from Varric and Hawke. He's the type of teacher to never give an A ever.
Justina is a history teacher that was already with the school and was taking over Corypheus's classes. She was the student advisor to Cassandra and Leliana
Ilan is a freshman, new to the school.
Everyone else has been around for at least a full year
Solis is a senior, ready to graduate but is being forced by family into a job\career he hates so keeps flunking on purpose
Sera is a rebellious student. Knows college is important but also dumb. Blocks poor people from gaining higher knowledge due to high costs. IT major, self taught hacker. Is also in Dance.
Bull is the football captain, team is the Chargers. He's that one student that sleeps in class but does good in tests. Can smell food anywhere in the room. Real name is Gary but no one knows but Krem
Krem is co captain. Loyal to bull. Is trans but only Bull knows
Cassandra is a Basketball player, was with the volleyball team but a scandal happened that forced her to leave.
Cullen is also a basketball player, was in soccer but left when issues rose
Leliana is a close friend of Cassandra and Josephine
Cole a psych major. Quiet. Knows things he shouldn't, it's just people talk around him, not knowing he's there.
Vivienne is a cheerleader. Hospitality and tourism major
Dorian is attending Fereldan college to spite his family of Tevinter College alumni
Varric failed History before with Corephyus. With help from Hawke, determined and proved the Corypheus was an unfair teacher and got him fired. Varric is in the school news paper. Uses it as an excuse to harass Cassandra and Cullen
Josephine is a business org major. She is good at making connections and communicating.
Main places
Haven was the old dorms
Skyhold is an apartment complex, everyone has their own room but shared common area
Fereldan college, where they all are attending
Tevinter college, rival college
Plot
On moving in day, as Ilan is walking to the dorms, noticed Justina getting in her car. Ilan could see someone else near the car shortly before car exploded.
Ilan was knocked out by the explosion, shrapnel hitting her, breaking and scarring her hand.
Corypheus was hired back on as the History teacher as the school was desperate for a replacement teacher.
The group share the history class together.
They create a study group to try and best Corypheus and get a passing grade
Solis knows all the answers but doesn't care as he doesn't want to graduate.
Varric is furious as Corypheus is supposed to be fired.
Cullen, Cassandra, and Leliana knows something is fishy with Justina's death and believe Corypheus is to blame
As the year goes on, Cullen finds out the soccer team has been doping on a drug called red.
With secrets heard from Cole, they find out it is a teacher.
Sera and her team of hackers find footage of a man messing with Justina's car shortly before the explosion
The scandal with volleyball team is Cassandra found out the team had been cheating to win.
As the study group does well, Corypheus gives harder and harder questions that would stump even history majors so that it is near impossible to succeed
Varric names his laptop Bianca. Sera hacks everyone's computers, including Bianca.
She doesn't harm the computers really, usually actually doing virus protect, but adds a code where everytime you type a group members name, a picture of the person will pop up.
At first the pictures are the worst, mid sneeze, picking noses, asleep drooling. As they become better friends, the pictures become nicer.
Except Vivienne. No matter what Sera does, she can't get a bad picture of Vivienne. This drives Sera crazy.
Sera's picture is of course her sticking her tongue out and flipping off the camera.
When she finds out who has a crush on who, she changes the picture into something scandalous.
First is Varric, Everytime he types Cassandra or Cullen, a picture of them pops up, hot and sweaty after a game\working out, abs exposed. Nothing X rated but definitely risque.
He bursts in screaming, "what did you do to Bianca!?" Sera acts innocent and clueless. Varric fuming, "I hate you! But thank you! Don't touch Bianca again!" And storms off
Sera giggles and whispers to herself, "you're welcome"
When Bull gets his computer updated with nice pictures of Dorian, as a thank you, Bull introduce Sera to his sister Carol.
Carol is just as big and beefy as Bull. Sera can't think straight, says dumb things, "so if he's a Bull, does that make you a Cow?... Wait no.. that's not what I meant" and runs off flustered. Luckily for Sera, Carol is morosexual lol
No one knows how Sera gets these pictures, she only says Jenny took them for her.
Someone tries to out Krem.
Everyone backs up Krem immediately
Bull "I share a locker room with him. Trust me, he's a man"
Dorian "I sucked his dick"
Vivienne "He was an excellent lover"
Cole "that's a human male"
Cassandra goes on an angry rant
Rumors of Krem being a woman quickly drop.
Krem doesn't know how to feel, he knows his friends love and protect him, but wish some were more discreet.
By the end of the year, as a group, they find out that Corypheus was selling Red to the students. Justina found out and was going to report him to the college and police. Before she could, he blew up her car.
As they graduate of the following years, they stay close and create a reach out organization that helps the children of drug addicts. The children can stay there as their parents get clean or until the child feels safe after a parent has OD'ed.
Cole is the main therapist. Ilan is the head of the school. Vivienne and Dorian helps with fund raisers and advertising.
Josephine is the secretary, helping Ilan with appointments and obligations.
Most become teachers, occasionally help with therapy treatments with Cole's supervision.

The Ultimate DA: I OC Questionnaire.
Hi DA fandom! I’m seven years late to the party. A few years ago I whipped up this huge DA: I questions template and never released it but I figured why not. It’s got 22 parts and almost 200 questions, free to be modified to your liking for other websites as long as there’s credit. It’s very packed and full, and is all located under the cut. I would strongly recommend copy pasting everything underneath the cut and turning it into your own post (please like/reblog if you do, and tag me in it if you want to!) for your own ease, but you’re welcome to just reblog it and fill it in from there. Without further ado, the ultimate DA: I OC questionnaire. Enjoy!

What was their reaction to Felix's letter? Did they trust it, or were they suspicious? 11. 5 Did they care about Felix's illness, or was it unimportant to them? I know what you did last summer...Hey alex, i got something for you. How would those in the inquisitor's circle react to being called handsome/beautiful out of the blue? Before and or after relationship? Thanks
Inquisitor’s circle being complimented, before/after relationship? Thank you for the ask and I don’t know what you mean by that. Don’t talk to me or my Cabot ever again. (Kidding)
-LordLex
Cullen (Before)
-“Oh, uh, thank you.”
-Doesn’t really know how to take this
-Just thanks you and continues on with his duties
-Not sure why he’s being complimented but is thankful that it’s more sophisticated than most of the ‘compliments’ he receives from Sera
(After)
-“Please, if anyone should be receiving compliments, it’s you.”
-Not the most poetic, but he tells you exactly what he thinks.
-Still not used to it but tries his best to return the compliments.
-The soldiers can tell when you’ve given him a compliment because his face is slightly flushed after talking to you
Josephine (Before)
-“Thank you, Inquisitor! And might I return the kind words and say that you are looking well.”
-Something she’s been through, she’s basically on autopilot
-She accepts it with respect and returns it all the same
-Makes her day to get a compliment from the Inquisitor
(After)
-“You always seem to find the most poetic way to say what you’re thinking.”
-She takes the compliments to heart
-Can always find a new thing to compliment you about, the way your eyes shine or how fluid your motions are
-Of course, that doesn’t stop her from beaming all day
Solas (Before)
-“Thank you. It is much appreciated, Inquisitor.”
-Don't fill the Egg’s head. It’ll just make him more powerful
-Besides that, is happy that someone appreciates him
-Let’s be honest, you get most of his approval by complimenting him on what a big nerd expert he is
(After)
-“You grace me with your words too often, Vhenan. Though, more words could be said about you, truly describing in detail your perfection.”
-This man’s main goal is to make you a flustered mess, and that’s only with complimenting you.
-He will not let you out-compliment him, for every comment you give, he gives you 3 of them.
-You’d think he’d run out of things to say about you. So did Dorian but he gave up listening to your conversation a LONG time ago.
Cassandra (Before)
-“I...Thank you, friend. But what is the purpose of this conversation?”
-Very suspicious as to why you’re complimenting her. Thinks Varric put you up to it.
-Takes a while, but once she knows your true intentions, she does appreciate it
-Might take her a bit to compliment you back, usually about how well of a fighter or leader you are
(After)
-“You shouldn’t say such things out loud for anyone to hear! I’d rather not have Varric quoting you!”
-Very flustered, tries to put her hands over your mouth if you continue
-But when you two are alone, she listens so intently to the words you weave together, speaking of her
-She can only tell you how amazing and wonderful you are, and she means it with all her heart
The Iron Bull (Before)
-“Thanks, boss. You’re not so bad yourself.”
-Man will take anything, even compliments. Gets them constantly by certain admirers
-Will give an equally meaningful compliment back to you
-Sometimes, it’s followed up by a more in-depth detail or how to make it better
-(“Cassasndra, about your fighting-”
“Not again.”)
(After)
-“You know, a compliment like that from anyone else I would’ve just taken it and continued. But from you, kadan? Makes a man ten times stronger.”
-Honestly seems like with every compliment you give him, the worst his enemies have it against him.
-Does not hold back on the compliments, either, so just be ready for when you tell him he looks nice that he returns it with how nice you look being tied up.
-Though it does become a problem when your complimenting him in front of his children the Chargers
-(“Oy, boss! Have I told ya how nice your eyes are, too?”
“Keep it up, Krem, and you’ll see how nice my swinging arm is.”)
Dorian (Before)
-“Usually nice words are followed up with a favor or a spiteful comment. Which is it this time?”
-After the initial thought that you might be sassing him, he is all ABOUT the compliments
-Agrees full heartedly with each one, with some minor details that he expects you to remember
-Want to make him really appreciate them? Compliment him about his knowledge. Boy has got some big brains
(After)
-“Oh my, whatever will people say about such words you use for me? Amatus, please, I can only take so much kindness.”
-He’s a sarcastic little- but he really does melt whenever you talk about him, complimenting him
-Especially if you start to talk about the little details you see: how his mustache is brushed so perfectly that not one hair can be found out of place, or how enraptured he become when speaking of a subject he finds fascinating
-Not gonna stop him from doing the same but most of the time leads to Solas calling up to you two to ‘get a room’
Sera (Before)
-“Right, ok. What the hell is this?”
-Takes a few times to explain because this is not something Sera is used to
-Thinks your pulling her leg for the most part, doesn’t know how to respond
-When she does, it’s something along the lines of ‘You stabbed that person pretty good’
(After)
-“Heheh! You think that’s nice, Inky? Well, let’s talk about that one time in bed when we-”
-Somebody stop her, please
-Doesn’t matter where you are, who you’re with or what you’re doing. If you compliment this woman, she’s going to ‘attempt’ by talking about everything
-And I mean EVERYTHING. She’s not leaving any details out
Blackwall (Before)
-“What’s all this? I really don’t deserve this praise. But...thank you.”
-Take the nice words, Blackwall, please
-Tries to downplay it, pushes it off or away. This man believes himself to not be good enough for these words
-Stop, you’ll overwhelm him with your appreciation
(After)
-“Thank you, love. The only thing I can say to that is you are stunning as ever.”
-Still not used to it, but coming from you? Worth it
-Truly knowing him and still complimenting him? He’s even more in love than he was from the start
-This is something he can get used to
Sorry for long post! Hope you enjoy!
