to the person earlier who went off angry about how evan is treated like the main character in mismag, listen that's a flaw of the show not the fandom. Brennan spends sooooooo much time in that season both talking about his own character and making his curse THE Big Fucking Deal of the season. Then Erika enables it by having their character constantly talk about how hot and tortured he is.

Honestly my one critique there is that Aabria as the DM should have never let Brennan have a storyline that made him the Harry Potter insert for the series if the focus of the campaign was supposed to be the group. As a DM, if one of my PCs got that off balance with stealing the spotlight I would talk to them and find ways to pull other characters into the fold more so they don't get sidelined like especially Danielle was that season.

I think we watched different mismags, pretty sure it was the other players focusing on Evan, Brennan was just dm describing his character. Evan was Leiland from Bloodkeep if he actually could succeed on rolls in that way.

I'd also like to say, certain sidequests (Tiny Heist, Mice & Murder) are based around stories where there is a main character. Some one has to be the Danny Ocean, the Sherlock Holmes, and in the case of Mismag, the Dark Lord. Brennan has mentioned previous to Mismag that on the rare opportunities he gets to be a player character, he asks the dm what he could do to best serve the narrative. Assuming he did that here as well, it's likely that Aabria wanted someone to play a Dark Lord archetype, and given no one else did that, Brennan stepped up to plate.

But I don't think Aabria, like, ignored the other pcs, both K and Sam had huge narrative control during certain sections of the story, and Whitney was basically team leader the whole campaign.

The fandom is absolutely the problem here, outside of confessions, no one ever talks about that last paragraph. This fandom has hella blorbofied Evan to the detriment of every other pc.

I know Bloodkeep is old news but hear me out

Trans Leiland who didn’t even really stand a chance for the throne as he’d been born a girl, and one of the very very few good things Zaul’Nazh has ever done was give him a masculine body in rising him to undeath, creating him sort of in his own image. I’m sure there was some selfish fucked up reasoning behind why he would have done so but Leiland would’ve seen it as an act of kindness, and devoted himself fully to his ‘savior’. Yada yada you know how it goes, Z would’ve been very gross about ogling Leiland and this poor knight would’ve been completely unaware and blind to all his bad deeds because he was hopelessly in love.

But anyway I’m transmasc so I think he should be too because those are the rules. Thoughts?

First Ever D20 Fic: Cast Away

So

About a month and a half or so ago, my beta reader, Livie, introduced me to Escape From the Bloodkeep. It was my first experience with D20 and I have absolutely LOVED it so far.

Now, Whumptober came around, and we thought it would be cool to do a fic about Markus, considering one of the prompts was "Stranded." I thought I'd be able to bust out about 2000 words of a fic to fulfill the prompt and allow me to try out writing for a new fandom.

Now, THIRTY-ONE PAGES (roughtly 14,000 words later) I AM FINISHED. If you are at all interested in Markus' backstory, we pretty much just came up with all of it in one sitting.

Escape from the Bloodkeep Character Analysis: Leiland

Leiland/Kraz-Thun is the leader of the the Vinguri, the dark lord's wraith servants. He has given up everything to serve Zaul'Nahz, to the point that he is figuratively and literally withering away. He has even given up the name Leiland in favor of the name his master chose for him, Kraz-Thun. He wears a crown of chains imbued with a piece of Lord Z's soul, symbolizing his subservient bond. Leiland has developed an unrequited co-dependent relationship with the Lord of Shadows. It is apparent that Lord Z's cruelty has worn at Leiland when he has to chant to himself "You are loved. You are important," before speaking with Zaul'Nahz.

Leiland's unfulfilled desire for approval from the dark lord leads to resentment against the other Vinguri and especially Maggie, the two of whom repeatedly snap at each other throughout the show, clearly rivals for Lord's attention.

More than any other character, Leiland is associated with failure. He is introduced as he returns from another failed attempt to retrieve Lord Z's crown from the two halflings. Leiland's many failures are embodied by his multiple encounters with the halfling, Galfast Hamhead, who constantly eludes him.

Leiland's inner journey revolves around realizing his loyalty and service to the dark lord has been misplaced. This is epitomized during the fall from the airship as he witnesses Maggie in labor. “Falling, as the wreckage passes by him and he’s accepted this, failure after failure after failure. His eyes close, as he just feels the wind rushing past him, thinking that all the sacrifices he’s made for the lord that is now gone. ‘What have I accomplished? Nothing. What reason is there to remain and endure?’”

His transformation occurs when he realizes he deserves someone that appreciates him. This is found after the party decides not to resurrect Zaul'Nahz, but to instead crown Maggie's newborn, which she decides to name Leiland Jr. “I’m naming my son after the name of yours that I prefer,” Maggie says. This shows the two of them overcoming the resentment that Lord Z had stoked between them.

After accepting the baby as his new liege, Leiland undergoes a symbolic and actual resurrection where he reemerges cast in angelic white. “Hide no longer behind your helmet. I would have the world behold the face of my right hand,” Leiland Jr. tells him. The casting aside of the chain helm demonstrates Leiland's development into a stronger more independent person that no longer needs Zaul'Nahz. Afterwards Leilands failure streak comes to an end and he proves a vital help in the battle at the Tomb of Ultimate Evil.

Leiland's journey concludes with him now serving Leiland Jr., who represents a new better kind of Evil. Though he is given one final task by his new lord, pulling together the last loose end for Leiland, and that is to bring him the head of Galfast Hamhead.

Dear Yuletide Writer 2024

Dear Yuletide Writer:

First off, thank you! I hope you are as excited about your assignment as I am to receive it. Hopefully the lateness of my Yuletide letter didn’t panic you too much! I enjoy a wide variety of fic, and these are truly some of my favorite canons, so really you can’t go wrong...but if you are looking for a spark of inspiration, I hope this letter provides it.  

General Likes/Dislikes: 

Things I love in a Yuletide fic: M/M, UST, hurt/comfort, banter, happy endings. When I look at the canons I chose, one consistent theme is that they all end on a note of hope, yet the characters I chose within these canons don't always get to experience that. I think, more than anything, what I would love to see is a chance for these characters to catch a glimmer of it for themselves (or for each other, in the canons where I've selected a pairing). 

Things I generally don’t like in a Yuletide fic: AU’s set outside of the canon setting (coffee shop, etc), MPREG, graphic gore, body horror, unhappy endings. That being said, if you have a wild idea that goes against these, these are definitely more loose guidelines than DNW’s.

Coldfire Trilogy

Damien Vryce/Gerald Tarrant Not sure if there will ever be a Yuletide where I don't request CFT fic. I do write frequently for this fandom, but just because I write in a certain style, please don’t restrict yourself to my “usual” topics. For this canon especially, I’m excited to read what you want to write.  I’m starting my millionth re-read of the trilogy, so I am excited to read anything set either during canon, or a post-canon fix-it. Give me all the banter. Give me all the UST. Give me Gerald Tarrant doing something kind (while doing mental gymnastics to justify it to himself as FOR SELFISH REASONS ONLY). Give me Damien forgetting to agonize over what GT is and just enjoying a moment with him (bonus points for him Prophet!fanboying). Give me physical contact of some sort between them, give me the soul bond! I ship these two hard, but I am happy to read pre-slash/gen.

Dimension20: Escape from the Bloodkeep

Leiland (Kraz-Thun) I watched Escape from the Bloodkeep 2 months ago(?) and once I was done, I immediately restarted it and watched the series again. Bloodkeep has some of my favorite Dropout cast characters, but of course it was Matt Mercer’s Leiland who stole the show for me. Someone on Reddit summed up Leiland as “All that dark power and regal lineage turned into a benny hill skit” and in response I can only say, that’s exactly why I’m here. I am happy with both pre and post-canon fic, gen or shippy (and not picky on ship). I’d really love to see Leiland navigate how to be Leiland, and not Kraz-Thun, and getting more comfortable in the “evil” found family he has created. Galfast Hamhead, while not requested, is of course 1000% welcome in any story.  Yoroiden Samurai Troopers (Ronin Warriors)

Shuten/Rajura

This was my first real fandom, well over two decades ago now, and Shuten/Rajura was my first ship. I definitely carried a binder plastered outside with the Masho chibi from Amanda Swiftgold’s page and stuffed to the brim with too much printed fic from Mink’s Yaoi Cake archive. This was a rare ship even then, and I am absolutely fine with gen, and fics that include all the Masho. I would of course love a fix-it fic, but I am open to exploring missing canon scenes also. I would enjoy a fic either from Rajura or Shuten’s perspective that grapples with their encounter out on the tracks, and that sprinkles in some of their shared complex history. Feel free to bend canon details in terms of what the armor enables. 

Uprooted

Solya/Marek These two have taken up residence in my brain and will not leave me alone. They truly enable each other in a way that is absolutely toxic, but I would love a fic that lets them attempt to do better by each other. I would prefer that Marek lives in your fic, whether that means exploring pre-canon events, or a missing scene during their story, and I would definitely enjoy a fix-it (just think of the hurt/comfort possibilities!) where they get to figure out their version of a happy ending. How do they navigate a world where they both wield less power? Would they be able to make their peace enough with that to carve out something new? Or would they chafe against that lack of power, and it would be that struggle that entwines them further?

i know bloodkeep isn't that popular and this would ultimately not be worth it for them but if dropout decided to make a plush of J'er'em'ih I'd buy it in an instant (i finished bloodkeep two days ago and i haven't stop thinking of J'er'em'ih)
