I was thinking about How I Met Your Father (the since-canceled How I Met Your Mother spinoff starring Hilary Duff) and how the series kind of set up a storyline that was aiming for an unconventional ending instead of the nuclear family ideal. Sophie is played in flash forwards by Kim Cattrall, the eternal icon of single ladies everywhere, and Sophie seems to have a great life. She's a successful photographer, has a fabulous NYC apartment, a great relationship with her adult son, and is unashamed of her youthful shenanigans. She does not wear a ring and it's unclear if she has a partner. It became clear as the show came to an end that he was raised by both parents, though they never clarified if they raised him as a couple.

Sophie is goals AF. Who wouldn't want to be her?

The show had a small fan base, but from what I could tell they HATED Adult Sophie and constantly begged for Kim Cattrall to be kicked off the show. They didn't care that Sophie seemed like she might be fine not having a partner after all, because they saw that as the only possible ending for her. They also constantly complained that Adult Sophie wasn't mom material, even though her son was an adult. If she didn't fit a stereotype, they didn't want her.

Now I go back to the original subject of the show, which is Sophie's love life. She has an on-and-off relationship with Jesse (played by Chris Lowell), a sardonic and somewhat pretentious musician (he is clearly intended to be the "Ted" of the show). However, after the first season one of the writers got fired and announced that their friend Sid, who owned the bar they all hung out at, was in fact the father. Sid was affable and down-to-earth (the "Marshall" of the show) and also in a long-distance marriage, so he wasn't a romantic prospect for Sophie in the show storyline. It seemed to me that the show was leading towards an endgame where Sophie has a baby with Sid, but they don't end up together, and maybe she gets together with Jesse later (they could explain his absence by saying he was on tour) or stays single.

The fans objected to this fiercely. Sid and Sophie had to end up happily ever after or else! It didn't seem to matter that she seemed to live alone and seemed happy without a partner and spoke warmly of her baby daddy (whoever he was). They kept insisting Jesse had to die so Sophie and Sid could end up together. Jesse could not cope with breaking up with Sophie and having her get together with one of his friends. It didn't matter that not only had he and Sophie already gotten together, broken up, and still hung out with each other in season one, but that two other people in their friend group had done so as well and no one needed to die. It's the reaper for poor Jesse or else, so he can get out of the way of the nuclear family that it's not clear that Sophie even wants.

The show ended with Sophie and Jesse giving it another go and Sid breaking up with his long-distance wife. It's not clear that it ever got decent ratings (no streaming numbers were ever released, and it didn't chart). I'm not mad about the cancellation: Hulu gave it a shortened first season, then gave it a longer second one where the show got much better but it appears the numbers didn't improve. They tried. I also think Duff maybe wasn't that enthusiastic about it: she had a fourth baby about nine months after the show was canceled and hasn't mentioned it since. It seems she maybe wanted to focus on something else. I think in the long run, the show's audience just could not deal with the type of show it was. They wanted a conventional happy ending and the show just wasn't heading there. Neither was HIMYM, I guess.

The show overall wasn't brilliant, but it was enjoyable and I liked the characters and even though most of the other fans hated it, I liked that it seemed that the show was aimed to embrace an unconventional happy ending where everyone would remain 100% alive (very important!) and on good terms with each other. That seems a more realistic dynamic than the picket fence stuff, and I'm sad to have missed out on the chance for it.

(the last bit representing actual affection is very notable, considering everyone else in show-window marriages.) dad, ily, but we both know why i picked this drama up. long after the faux chaebol revenge fades from the limelight, the general public will continue to owe kim shinrok for refusing her talent to be boxed as merely garnish/‘only daughter amongst many sons’ and for her commitment to having maximum fun on set for us. give her a worthy slice-of-life next.

Kerry sat on the couch, watching over the three with a soft smile he didn’t even know was there. Ted and Kim were fawning over their newest little sister, well Kim was, Ted was already planning the murder of her future partners if they ever hurt her. And Kerry was right there with him.

V was taking a nap, exhaustion hitting him hard and Kerry understood it. Louise did too and had flown in to help them, and more specifically V. Kerry had been there for the baby stages of both Kim and Ted and had a general idea of what was happening when it was happening, V’s body went into kill mode the second she yawned weird and it took both Kerry and Louise to convince to go get a full eight hours of sleep. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

It had been Kerry’s idea to name her Jackie. And V had teared up a bit, Mama Wells had too when meeting her for the first time. He would have been her Uncle and V considered Misty her aunt so Kerry decided why the hell not?

He checked the time and rubbed his face, groaning into his hands before getting up. Nap time, finally. She was getting fussy anyway. Ted gave her over with little hesitation, she was all cute until she began to cry and Kerry doubted an 18 year old enjoyed holding a crying infant. He knew if V caught wind of her crying, he’d wake up. And they couldn’t have that.

The baby calmed when feeling her father hold her, something about Kerry, Louise and V had no idea how he did it for a man that was not father material. All the kids had it, when Kerry picked them up, they calmed down. He carried her into her nursery in their new home, the Villa really wasn’t made for children and the idea of a child living there stressed everyone out. He found himself humming Never Fade Away, dimming the windows and getting Jackie ready for nap time. He made sure to get the baby monitor out of the bedroom before V fell asleep.

Once he got Jackie down, he came back out. Ted and Kim were quietly watching TV, Ted looking like he could take a nap himself, and Louise sitting outside to look over the city. Kerry decided to join her since his husband and kids were settled now. He stepped out and light a well needed cigarette, both Kerry and V were against smoking around Jackie and normally just took it outside. He sat next to his ex wife and eyed the city, as if daring it to come and take his family away from him.

“You always were good with babies. I dunno why, but they all seemed to love you.” She said softly. Kim had always been a daddy’s girl but even Ted wanted Kerry to hold him a lot as baby and toddler. “They smell the fear. They are like a cat who finds someone who doesn’t like cats, they are all over me.” Kerry said, blowing the smoke out away from her. Louise snorted, shaking her head.

“V still sleeping?” She asked, and Kerry went into the house security feed to check. He nodded, and was glad. “He’s fucking exhausted. Gonna run himself into the damn ground if he’s not careful.” Kerry said, no real bite behind his voice because he knew V was trying to do everything for their family. But Kerry did wish he’d acknowledge that he was a first time dad and needed to give himself time to adjust to having a tiny thing to take care of now. “He’s lucky he’s cute.” Kerry said, getting another laugh out of Louise.

“Oh he’s doing fine. Better than we did with Ted. We stared at him for a week straight unsure of what to do, and it just kinda came to us,” “You.” “Us.” Louise gave her ex husband a hard look, that turned playful about a second later. “Let’s just hope we can keep him asleep until after her nap, hell maybe even before dinner. That’d be fuckin’ preem.” Kerry muttered, settling into the pool chair he was sitting in. Louise nodded and leaned over to steal his lighter and one of his cigarettes.
