Vax: *laying in his Northside apartment, thinking no one knows where he is, then gets tackled*

Panam: Think you can hide from us?

Vax: *looks up to find Kerry taking his jacket off* what the fuck is this?

Ker: We made a deal. No rotting in bed alone. I just brought backup this time.

It looks like it’s gonna rain and I’m having the somft thoughts of Kerry and Vax snuggled up in bed, Kerry staring out at the rainy city. Nibbles curled up where Johnny normally is. and Kerry remembers Johnny is alive. He’s coming back. He ran out to get cigarettes and food for them. Then Vax fully shifts around, arms wrapping around his waist, face tucked up under his jaw. And Kerry realizes he’s finally made it

“Sleeping with him? He fucked you once. End of story.”

Kerry could see Vax shaking from where he was sitting. It the type of shaking you get after one too many cups of coffee, or in Vax’s case, the second energy drink he was slamming right now.

“I thought your therapist told you lay off those.”

“My therapist isn’t here, is she? Thought you were a rule breaker, Ker.”

He was. But not when it came to his husband’s health.

“Vax.”

“It’s fine.”

Kerry just sighed, eyes wandering back to Vax’s hands. They were gorgeous hands, decorated in chrome for the gorilla arms that caught fire at the worst times. Damn near burnt his dick off and that was the last time his hands were allowed down there until he got them fixed.

Ker would have to watch Vax slam caffeine like it was water for another week before he put an order in for their favorite lady. Misty hooked him up with some good teas to hopefully help, as well as warning that she had been trying to get Vax on tea for years.

But she didn’t have the power Kerry had.

He found Vax right where he wanted him, at the island, working away as always. Though Kerry couldn’t say a word, when he was in the zone, he was in it. But it also lead the perfect distraction.

Vax didn’t look up once while Kerry worked on the tea. V was aware enough that it was Kerry home, because no one could just get past the security V had put in. Only trusted members of the Eurodyne household could come in unannounced.

Kerry shut his husband’s laptop when he was done and placed the mug in front of him, making Vax finally look at him. The smile that graced his man’s face was worth every battle it took to get here. Vax had slightly leaned over the counter for a kiss, which Kerry would never deny him of.

“I got you somethin’.”

“I don’t do leaf water, love.” Vax hummed, looking down into the mug.

“Just try it. For me?” The sigh let Kerry know those were the magic words that always worked. “Even put some honey and lavender in it for you. You don’t need to be drinking enough caffeine to kill Adam Smasher with anxiety like yours.”

Vax glared at him. “I’m not a child.”

“Oh trust me, I know.”

“Drink the damn tea already.”

Vax huffed, looking down at the mug before taking a sip. It was simple green tea that Ker had made a bit more special for Vax to try.

Vax said nothing, just making direct eye contact as he took another drink. Then put the mug down.

“I hate you both.”

Kerry laughed, knowing he had won this one.

“Not too bad, is it?”

“Fuck you.” Vax opened his laptop again, taking another sip.

“I thought you didn’t like leaf water.” Ker teased.

“I could be so mean right now, but I’m not gonna. Because I’m a nice husband. Who doesn’t wanna sleep on the couch.”

“Realistically, how often do you sleep on the couch alone.” Never. Kerry doesn’t let him sleep alone.

“…fuck you.” Vax mumbled after a few moments of silence.

Kerry laughed and walked around the counter to give his man a proper kiss and a hug, and also to be nosy in what he was working on.

“…are you playing fucking solitaire?”

V doesn’t cry for a while.

You’d think after everything he had been through, losing Johnny, Jackie, and T-Bug, and losing himself would cause him to break. But it doesn’t. He doesn’t cry for a while.

He doesn’t cry until about two months after he and Kerry are married, and he’s admitting to himself that the relic ruined him in deeper ways than he thought. Rogue passed over the torch of the Afterlife to him, promised she’d still be around if he needed anything, and that was that.

Vax was standing in his massive penthouse, sounds of a bath running upstairs and soft music playing over the surround sound. A calm night, the husbands still deep in their honeymoon phase and their “holy shit can you believe we lived through that?” Phase.

“Vax?”

V wasn’t aware of the tears running down his face until warm hands cupped his cheeks and wiped them away. No judgement or harshness, just pure concern from his lover.

He tried to answer, say he was okay, but his voice broke and a sob wracked through him. He covered his mouth as Kerry brought him closer, petting his hair and whispering to him. He wonders how long this had been anticipated. How long people were waiting for him to break.

He cried for Jackie, the first one he lost in this chaos. Then for T-Bug, who died quicker than he had time to process, he didn’t even know she was dead until a week later. Then he cried for Johnny, the one he came to see as his other half. By the end of it, he was ready to accept that he and Johnny were one. That he could find a way to save them both. He loved Johnny, in such a way it hurt to not have him anymore.

He cried for his lost youth. For Vex, who had to become a mother quicker than anyone ever should. For himself, raising the both of them on the streets for 15 years. Then he cried over the burn on his hand, a signal for the start of the worst years of his life. Maybe if that night had never happened, he would have never met him. Maybe he could take showers like a normal person and swim in his perfectly good pool.

And then he cried for Kerry. For the poor man that didn’t deserve any of this. Who probably thought he was signing up for some fun with a young man and got stuck with a wrecking ball instead. Vax had spent the last few years trying so hard to be that. He hated watching Kerry take care of him after the space station, waking up to Kerry holding him to his chest after a nightmare. This wasn’t how this was supposed to go, it was supposed to be the other way around.

“Hey… sweetheart, look at me.”

Vax felt his face being pushed away from the safety of Kerry’s shoulder. Back to the harsh reality of Night City… but in that moment, he was in their living room. Warm and safe from any horrors in the city below. The warm hands holding his face were full of love and as Kerry promised him on their wedding day, protection.

They couldn’t protect each other in the same ways, but they still loved each other.

Kerry bumped their foreheads together, forcing eye contact. Vax hated eye contact when he was vulnerable like this.

“I love you.”

Those three little words, ones that took them so long to say with confidence. Now he said it with his full chest, eye contact and all.

“How long have to been waiting for this?” Vax’s voice was broken from crying, still trying to catch his breath. But Kerry just smiled.

“A while. Crying on our wedding day doesn’t count either. Had bets with everyone going. I thought you’d cry about a month after you came down, Judy had two-“ Vax started laughing before Kerry could finish teasing him.

“Hey…” Vax closed his eyes, holding his husband’s wrists.

“Hey handsome.”

“I love you too.”
