Ben Whishaw (“Paddington”) and “Happy Valley’s” Sarah Lancashire are set to join Keira Knightley in Netflix’s upcoming spy series “Black Doves,” Variety can exclusively confirm.

More details about the series, which was written and created by “The Lazarus Project” showrunner Joe Barton, have also emerged.

A story of friendship and sacrifice, “Black Doves” is set during Christmastime in London. It revolves around Helen Webb (Knightley), a politician’s wife, doting mother — and professional spy. For years, Helen has been passing on her husband’s secrets to the Black Doves, the shadowy organization for whom she works. But when her lover Jason is assassinated, Helen’s life is turned upside down and only her old friend Sam Young (Whishaw) can keep her safe.

Helen and Sam set out to discover who killed Jason and why. But Sam, a suave, champagne-drinking assassin, also has problems of his own. Out of the game since his last job went wrong, he soon realizes his past is coming back to haunt him.

“Together, they set off on a mission that will lead them to uncover a vast, interconnected conspiracy,” reads the logline. “One that links the murky underworld of London to a looming geopolitical crisis — and leads them to question the cost of the moral choices they’ve made.”

Lancashire will play Helen’s enigmatic spymaster Reed.

Joining Knightley and Whishaw in the six-part series, which began shooting in London last week, are Andrew Buchan (“Carnival Row”), Omari Douglas (“It’s A Sin”), Andrew Koji (“Warrior”), Kathryn Hunter (“Andor”), Sam Troughton (“Chernobyl”), Ella Lily Hyland (“Fifteen Love”), Adam Silver (“The Diplomat”), Ken Nwosu (“Look the Other Way and Run”) and Gabrielle Creevy (“In My Skin”).

“I started writing the scripts for this show over last year’s Christmas holidays, fuelled by turkey sandwiches and discarded bottles of cream liquor,” said Barton. “To be now going into production with a cast and crew full of people whose work I admire so much is unbelievably exciting and I couldn’t be more thrilled to get to see this show come to life.”

“Black Doves” is produced by Joe Barton’s Noisy Bear and Elizabeth Murdoch-founded Sister (“Chernobyl”) for Netflix. Barton exec produces for Noisy Bear alongside Jane Featherstone (“This Is Going To Hurt”) and Chris Fry (“Giri/Haji”) for Sister and Keira Knightley. The series is directed by Alex Gabassi (“The Crown”) and Lisa Gunning (“The Power”). Harry Munday (“Kaos”) is producing.

This Week in BL - Disappointing Doom

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

My School President (Fri YT) ep 12fin - Them openly dating and flirting with each other (finally) while keeping it “secret” was hilarious. No surprise they got outed tho. The whole “coming out homophobic teacher” sequence was very extra but suited this show. And ending with prom could not be more YA. Plus smiley kisses! 

CONCLUSION?

GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that was Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues.  Yes, we’ve seen it all before, but this is me: I ADORE this shit. Who let my BL be this wholesome and funny? This show was fantastic, it’s only flaw was the singing (and that’s my baggage). My favorite GMMTV offering to date. 9/10 (could go as high as 9.5 on my more forgiving days) 

Bed Friend (Sat YT, GaGa & iQIYI uncut) ep 2 of 8 - I’m ending my week with this one these days. I feel like this is an EXCELLENT life decision. King’s pining is WBL levels of EPIC. Uea’s ma may be the worst ma in Thai BL (and that’s some stiff competition.) Ah getting tested together, such a right of passage. I like King a lot, his attitude, life philosophy, the way he looks an Uea, everything. This show is GREAT.

YouTube has the cut version with slightly less sexy content (this is what I’m mostly watching). 

GaGa ALSO has the cut version, BUT they have “extra clips” with the uncut content, you’ll need to find and watch them separately. 

iQIYI has the uncut version with the above mentioned extra sexy bits integrated back into the full episode.

Moonlight Chicken (Weds YT) eps 5-6 of 8 - The break up btw Wen & Alan was really hard to watch, both actors are so good. Speaking of good actors, where did GeminiFourth come from? Seriously? I love these characters almost as a much as TinnGun. Heart’s parents are EVIL. Told ya they’d kiss as this couple bf TinnGun. Back of head wrap ‘Kiss’ tho, haven’t seen one of those from Thailand in ages. Old school. And then Khaotung just broadsides us with PAIN. This is such an aces show, but it is A LOT. 

Never Let Me Go (Tues YT) ep 11 of 12 - More cute BF intercut with agony. Holy role reversal dad butler! Otherwise a somewhat lackluster ep 11 of DOOM as dooms go, but I’m okay with that. 

Chains of Heart (Sat iQIYI) 1-2 of 10 - This is a suspense thriller about smugglers, amnesia, and lost love. Haii is good (and gorgeous) in the lead but the story is choppy, disjoined, and confusing. May be intentional, bad writing, or the captions being particularly bad (or all 3). It’s an interesting and different start. Not good but interesting. It reminds me a little of Manner of Death only with better action sequences. But I’m not sold on it because MoD had MaxTul, and this... does not. Ep 2 did not improve matters. When Ken & Lue flirt it’s fine and the Thai food bits were fun. (Kao Soi is one of my fav northern dishes, I’m sad he didn’t get to finish it.) At the funeral, why are they all texting when it can be traced and they could just be talking to each other? Honestly, everybody behaves like an idiot in this show. So I guess this is a revenge narrative? I’m so confused. They pretty tho, so I’ll keep watching because I am weak, but if you can wait, I think this is one that’s gonna be better as a binge. 

Our Winter (Thai & Korea YT & TikTok under ThaiMiniSeries) eps 1-7 of 14 - TutorYim microseries, told in vertical (TikTok) shorts. (Thanks to the BL spies for reporting in.) Cute Trope snippits but Korean is HARD to understand with a Thai accent. I’m not watching it with Eng subs and I’m not wild about this style short form but still - cute. Funny how they styled TutorYim so that they look slightly Korean - wardrobe and makeup wizardry. 

Hit Bite Love (Sat YT) ep 6 fin - Degrassi Junior BL concludes in a very soap opera way, with new characters and new/extra drama. Trigger warning on the original trigger. The investigating cop was super hot tho. Can we give him a BL? Also I liked the final scene makeup tons. But honestly what a total mess. I don’t know what i just watched and neither does it. 3/10 (sorry babies)  

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

HIStory 5: Love in the Future (Taiwan Weds Viki) ep 9 of 10 (or 17&18 of 20) - Kind of a filler ep and lackluster for a penultimate DOOM installment. But the HIStory franchise gets this way sometimes. 

Jack o’Frost (Japan GaGa) ep 2 of 6 - I’m finding it a bit dull. 

It’s Airing But ...

My Beautiful Man 2 (Viki & Gaga) - Because there are only 4 eps, I’m waiting to binge this.

Boyband ep 2 of 10 - Stopped airing on YouTube, and only available in Thailand & Japan. Not sure if they’re working a distribution deal or just fucking with us. 

Destiny Seeker (Tues WeTV ) 10 eps - it’s not on any WeTV I can get ahold of. Bad Buddy the pulp rebirth meets Japanese handsome host club action. FairyGodBLer came through for me, but I’m collecting to binge just in case. It’s my new policy with the grey stuff. 

Cafe In Love (Thai) 10 eps on Ch3+ - Thai pulp, about trying to save a coffee shop. Same as above. 

Gossip

Thailand’s famous gay pink milk comes to Oakland, CA, USA. This amuses me greatly. And yes, next time I’m in the area, I’ll probably try to hunt it down.  (What is Pink Milk?) 

Kim Ji Woong is doing fine on Produce 101 5 Boys Planet. I agree with the pundits that he’ll likely make it through. (Yes, I think he’s a better actor than idol, and yes, we will mostly lose him from BL if he goes all in with whatever group results from this.) But does that matter when Peak Time is also airing? No, because Peak Time is MUCH better and more interesting show and it has Karam (Happy Ending Romance) fucking KILLING IT. You all know I love Leo’s voice but clearly VIXX-euphoria distracted me, because I had no idea Karam was such a stable vocalist. He’s insane and it’s fun to watch a 2nd gen fucking SERVE it up (have you ANY idea how hard Mirotic is to do LIVE?). 

In case you missed it 

Viki has acquired the airing rights to Advance Bravely. We can’t expect it to be much altered, but at least it will be legally available, and one hopes the subs will improve.

Viki added The Eighth Sense to their upcoming KBL roster, new one to me. “A university romance about the confusion often felt by college youth regarding life and love.” 

KBL A Shoulder to Cry On AKA Comfort the Boy coming to Viki, March 13. (MUCH anticipated by me, this is a high school set hurt/comfort delayed by OMGEA X scandal.) This will be the first BL to star idols from the same group! Fingers crossed it’s good because this is a group that definitely needs BL’s support.

thinking about my fancasts for the last binding trilogy by freya marske (a very serious topic of contemplation for me)

kingsley ben-adir is my robin blyth fancast. i saw him in hulu's high fidelity as the-one-that-got-away ex-boyfriend and was like "dang i need this guy to play a proper romantic lead, stat" and he was also one of the himbo kens in barbie so i feel like he could pull off robin's stressed himbo energy. i like callum turner as edwin courcey because he was really charmingly awkward as one of the leads in tramps (2016). (funnily enough, my sister thinks he would be a good robin because "he was in the boys in the boat so he's probably good at pretending to row," which i don't necessarily disagree with, but i am attached to my robin fancast and think he would be a good edwin.)

i like the idea of sophie wilde is my maud blyth fancast–i only know her from a bit of pbs's tom jones (which i really need to finish, whoops), but i liked her in that and i think she could pull off maud's combo of feistiness and naivety. plus, i know she also has a horror background that could come in handy for some of the ghost medium stuff in a restless truth. bella heathcote is my violet debenham fancast purely because i watched professor marston and the wonder women in theaters when i was sixteen and it made an Impression on me and i would like to see her play a scandalous bisexual aristocrat-turned actress, please.

jack and alan i am less certain on and still contemplating…

i only know luke pasqualino as Hot David Kostyk on shadow and bone (i should really watch bbc's musketeers show…) and i could probably see him as alan, except he doesn't have quite the right hair to fit my mental image of alan? i also know that henry cavill in the enola holmes movies is a solid visual reference for jack alston but i just feel like that's too obvious or something. i was also thinking about how jack has a war injury that means he uses a cane sometimes and that could be a good opportunity to fancast a disabled actor like daniel monks who i've recently seen in the tv shows kaos and dead hot but again he also doesn't really fit my mental image of the character. apparently i have very specific mental images of jack and alan, which i didn't realize until writing this post? i shall continue contemplating the matter…

Rewatching Lovely Writer

This is part of my Crazy-Ass End-of-Year Rewatch Challenge where I will rewatch some of my favorite shows, some of my least favorite shows, and some shows in between. I pulled another title out of the bowl (yes, I'm letting chance choose for me) and got Lovely Writer. I finally got one of my favorites!

Anyway... I can't promise cohesive thoughts in these posts because it's the end of the year, I'm currently living in right-brain land 10+ hours per day, and I'm TIRED because the darkness of winter is here. You've been warned.

Also, since this is a rewatch, there are spoilers ahead.

Background

I first binged Lovely Writer in October 2023 and loved it. And I've rewatched it 2 times since. It's one of the few QLs I've given a 10/10 rating.

So, I think I'll just use this post to list all the reasons I love this show as I rewatch it. Let's go!

Why I Love Lovely Writer

Dee Hup House

Well, first of all, it's from Dee Hup House. They have an incredible list of shows, IMO, and aside from one collab that pissed me off (Jack & Joker, but we don't talk about that here, lol), I haven't given their projects any ratings below an 8/10.

The Actors

Another reason I love Lovely Writer is because of the actors. Starting with the main roles, I love both Up (playing Gene) and Kao (playing Nubsib). (I love Up so much that I wrote an appreciation post where I gush about him earlier this year.)

I also love Zorzo and Ken who play Tiffy and Tum respectively.

I'm especially weak for Zorzo. She's such a fucking goddess!

Bruce is great at annoying me as Aoey, which means he's doing his job very well, lol. (Btw, I loved him dearly in Step by Step and would love to see him in more shows.)

And my beloved Poppy, whom I love in everything he does, plays Gene's brother Jap.

It Sheds Light On the BL Industry

Since the story revolves around a BL writer's novel being adapted into a show, it shows the behind-the-scenes of how that happens and the not-so-nice realities of that.

Gene is writing stuff he doesn't really want to write (he would rather write dark fantasy or something) but his publisher is pushing him to write BL because it's popular and it sells.

In addition, he's being pushed to write scenes he's not comfortable writing, including sex scenes and dub-con/non-con scenes.

Even though the show critiques stuff that I personally enjoy in the media I consume (because I'm trash, lol), there's definitely a breath of fresh air over how this series deals with these topics.

It also discusses pairings/shipping and the not-so-positive side of fandom. It's a BL that critiques the BL industry. 10/10.

Up's Pen Twirling

I definitely think this is a valid reason to love the show.

Is this just me gushing over Up Pompat because I love him? Yes. But he's also cute as fuck in those glasses.

Nubsib Doesn't Know What Subtle Flirting Means

From the moment Sib sees Gene, his flirting game is on. And it never stops.

He doesn't know what subtle means. He even lies about his living situation so that Gene will allow him to stay at Gene's place for a while.

Even though he basically owns the apartment next door. But Sib will justify his lying because his attention is focused on one person and one person only...

And he's not subtle about it...

Not at all...

Not one bit...

Good for Sib. Good for Gene (though he's annoyed at first, lol). And good for me. 10/10, no notes.

Gene is Reserved

I have a tendency to love quiet and reserved characters. I love the complete opposites as well, but reserved characters have a special place in my heart. And Gene is one of those characters.

He's also socially awkward and a loose canon with a temper than just makes me love him even more.

The "Eat Me" Shirt

I love this shirt for obvious reasons.

And that both of them are wearing it.

The Way Sib Carries Gene

Sib Being a Gentleman When It Counts

Even though Sib has wanted to be with Gene for a long time, he doesn't take advantage of a drunk Gene when Gene wants to kiss him.

And he asks for permission when he wants to kiss Gene.

Both times are when Gene is in a vulnerable position (he's drunk the first time and it's after he finds out about Sib's true identity in the second example). Sib just makes sure Gene won't regret it the first time and that he won't overstep Gene's boundaries the second. Love it!

Gene's Dad's Story

I love that there's a deeper reason behind Gene's dad's initial disapproval of Gene and Sib's relationship other than being against it because he's a straight-up homophobe, or that it has something to do with familial reputation/status, etc., which is otherwise pretty common for the disapproving parents in many of the QLs I've watched. Gene's dad, though, has his own story.

Even though he's projecting his own experiences, fears, and feelings about being queer onto Gene and his relationship with Sib (which is sad, but understandable), it just makes me have a lot more empathy for him than other parents in the QL world. He genuinely wants his son to have a better life than he did. And when his own fears have settled a bit, much thanks to Gene's mom (who is such a gem, btw), he's the one who reaches out to his son first and apologizes. Other parents in the QL world should learn from him.

Tum's Rap Confession

Tum rapping his confession to Tiffy to make her believe he likes her is iconic. I don't know how many times I've seen that scene, but it's many. I just watched it four times, lol.

Final Words

I love this show.

The only thing I feel like could’ve made me love this even more was if Gene and Sib’s brothers had revealed that they’d already been dating for a decade.

Well... It's canon to me either way.

I could gush about the show some more, but I've reached the image limit and I'm done with the rewatch.

Poslije je batalila igračke i tražila od mene da joj crtam. Donijela je u torbi kesu sa masnim bojicama. Rekla sam joj da bih radije da crtam hemijskom, preciznije je.

Preciznije, kakva odrasla riječ, rekla je ona. Pomislila sam koji idiot moraš biti da misliš kako se riječi dijele na one za djecu i one za odrasle. Nije htjela da mi da svoje penkalo, iako sam joj objasnila pravila igre - ili penkalo, ili ništa od crtanja. Onda je zapisala nešto u svoj notes. Nije treptala.

Kaos

AKA: GODDAMMIT, NETFLIX.

I am very tired and stressed and so took a couple days off from both work and study to watch TV and movies. So far, I have achieved Kaos, and It Was A Good Decision.

So Roman-Greek Gods. So perfectly told. This is a Greco-Roman myth updated to current storytelling and it is done so well and Jeff Goldblum--while still being so very Jeff Goldblum--was such INCREDIBLE casting and how unflinchingly terrible all the gods are in their horrible warning way. Hera is The Matriarch. Poseidon is the envious but pragmatic Brother, Persephone and Hades with their responsibilities and fair marriage, ugh!

Okay. Okay, back it up.

So for those who are not aware, Kaos is a story of three humans fulfilling their prophecy to bring down the golden age of the Greek Gods. It is also a very Greco-Roman story about the question of fate, and power, and the nature of chaos.

Because all comes from chaos, and must return so. The Ancient Greeks were very nihilistic in their way. They believed that all that truly matters, in the end, is Love.

The wonderful, terrible thing that is Love.

There are many stories to remind us of this message, as there always are in the Greek myths. The main plot is a prophecy bestowed on three humans (which is odd, because prophecies are granted to each child when born, and should be unique), which Prometheus (of the stolen flame fame) believes will bring about the fall of Zeus, who is using human souls to fuel his and the other gods' power.

If I'm honest, the many stories, while all very good stories, did occasionally get distracting. We spent a lot of time with two of the humans--Eurydice and Caeneus--in the afterlife as they developed an infatuation and discovered that humans are never really reborn as they're told they are. We'd go long, disconnecting stretches without checking in the Ariadne, the final prophecised human and heir to the leadership of Krete.

Don't get me wrong, I loved them all. But the stories were supposed to be overlapping, and it often felt like someone saying "Oh, wait, meanwhile, I forgot to tell you about this other thing that was happening, bear with me a second." Which was unfortunate, because Ariadne's story was the most political and complicated and it definitely got put on the back burner a lot.

Though I imagine for some people the story of Eurydice falling out of love with her overbearing husband would have been quite difficult to digest. So maybe it was needed. Humans are only allowed to move on from love to other love, according to fiction, after all... </bitter>

Also, while I understand why we didn't get to know more about it (Prometheus isn't exactly a reliable narrator and he is the one telling the story), I wish we'd been told more about Prometheus' relationship with Zeus, rather than them shoehorning in the love story with Charon far be it from the epic ferryman to be loyal and changeable without a love story. Their conflict and how Zeus reacted to it turned out so integral to the plot, and yet we got only one actual line referencing their former relationship! Which is just typical of retellings which only ever think Prometheus matters because he stole fire when what really matters is that they were friends until

Anyway.

Moving onto the Fates. The overarching forces. My beloveds.

I wasn't originally on board with them because of the casting, but ultimately I adored them. How unaffected they were. How... beyond our ken. I loved it. I loved that of all the primordial beings - that they seemed to operate in foreign ways that we aren't supposed to understand. I love that they didn't seem all that powerful in and of themselves, but were still well beyond the gods' reach.

Not even the gods can defy the greatest and most terrible forces of this and other worlds, after all.

And speaking of the gods. Like I said, they were such perfect representations of the myths. Recognisable in their actions: petty, selfish, hedonistic, vengeful, yearning creatures... but separate and disengaged from the humans they mirror. Even Dionysus, Hades, and Persephone, who were the most compassionate, were ultimately unconcerned with humans as people. Hades and Persephone only really give a damn about the natural order. Dionysus just wants more. They will all use and abuse humans as necessary to serve their own whims.

And yet it was all done in such a modern, relatable way. It was a Greek myth, in language contemporary audiences could understand.

So good.

And then Netflix had to go and bloody cancel it!

We could have met Ares! And you know Zeus would have called on Athena. ATHENA. We could have seen the fall of Krete! We could have maybe seen the TITANS.

I am happy with what I got, and I'm not surprised, because Netflix is spending money like a shotgun blast and... well. Hollywood learned its lesson in the 50s when it comes to volatile politics, but...! BUT.

It was good. And I hope we see more like it one day.

Already answered here but another one is In and Wang from 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us. One of the most poignant, heartbreaking love stories I've ever watched.

14. Which Asian ql tropes do you want to send to the trash heap?

Their love can fix me, I don't need therapy. Mental illness is often trivialized in qls and we end up getting this trope. It has gotten better, but we still have a ways to go.

19. You have the chance to switch pairings in one Asian ql so that the sides become the main pairing and the mains get reduced to crumbs--which show are you choosing?

Definitely Man and Type from 2gether. They had me in such a chokehold that I ended up writing a ficlet about them. Notes:

This song is about a girl turning to the dark side. She sells her life to a demon to turn her pain into power. The music is really powerful without being too chaotic (like some of Drop's tracks) and is easily my favorite song on the album!

百の羊を積み重ねて　千の楔を身に受けましょう

I do not understand this line at all. I feel like its probably a proverb or a play of words but I couldn't find anything that sounded similar. 楔 means wedge, so I translated 千の楔を身に "A thousand wedges on the body" as "a thousand cuts," but I doubt that's what she meant.

Bet youse never had Ali Robertson collaborating at a theatre company’s creative lab on yr 2024 bingo cards, eh? Well that's what happened for two weeks and on Fri 11th October I was involved in four of the five performances that came from the intensive fortnight of creating and rehearsing. I'll not lie: I found myself squirming in the first couple of days. Pretty sure I was the only lunk with nae formal arts training and theatre terminology left me scratching my noggin, but lead artists Eszter Marsalko, Evie Waddell, Amy Conway, Lucas Chih-Peng Kao & Lewis Hetherington made me feel super welcome and Nicholas Bone & the Magnetic North crew & my fellow collaborating artists & performers were fantastically supportive in what turned out to be really interesting and loads of fun.
