A new Bren't Lewiis Ensemble box-set, with contributions by Usurper, on Chocolate Monk.
The recent and essential Brenât Lewiis Ensemble box-set âInspired By Actual Eventsâ is rammed wi audio & visual delights PLUS the first ever post-divorce transmission by Usurper (Ali Robertson & Malcy Duff) in collaboration wi the Brenâtleys themselves. Our contributions are largely culled fae the same sessions as our swan song album âThe Big Twoâ though Gnarlos & Lucian Tielens have done their damndest to make âem unrecognisable.
(Only time will tell whether Malcy & I actually did bow out gracefully in 2023 or if this is the beginning of a lucrative 2pac-esque endeavour that ends with AI representations of ourselves performing as back up dancers for various luminaries of the No Audience Underground.)
Get yr latest consistently excellent dose fae the BLE via the consistently excellent & affordable Chocolate Monk boutique at: https://chocolatemonk.co.uk/available.html

More open-minded jazz and experimental music shenanigans from London collective Flock. Comprised of Bex Burch, Sarathy Korwar, Danalogue, Al MacSween and Tamar Osborn, the quintet has wasted little time sharing its second project in less than a year. âIn Câ, is a 5-track EP inspired by minimalism pioneer Terry Riley. As expected, the collective continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in music.

Lezet - "Broken" is out on PALABRA Y SONIDO (Puerto Rico)!
Lezet - "Broken" is out on PALABRA Y SONIDO (Puerto Rico)! An album that spawned "Martha Too"and is basically its sister album. There's something truly magical about a broken instrument ( a guitar with a broken neck and strings still attached to it) - it not relinquishing control over to you, and you letting it fish for music. https://palabraysonidopr.bandcamp.com/album/broken

Scheduled for release on the 4th October, the self-titled debut album from Norwegian Jazz Rockers THE VERGE, offers up a veritable palette of sounds. Drawing on extreme improvisational rock and dreamy noise/dronescapes, it ranges from fiery melodic jazz to prog rock, from atmospheric free-improvisation to heavy riffs. Having recently released a single from the album, Is It Jazz? Records nowâŚ

Cheers very much. Be seeing youse.....
So the final curtain has been and gone... Thanks to Summerhall for hosting Usurper's retirement party, to Tindegger, Joyce Whitchurch & the Chocolate Monk DJs for serenading our lugholes, and to our family & friends fae all over the dis-UK, Europe & further afield who made it along on Saturday. Our hearts melted, along with the rest of our bodies, in that sweaty sold out venue knowing that youse were there with us. Thanks also to our extended family of international weirdos across the globe who sent well wishes and who kept us keen to traverse the landscape of largely unpopular music for one day shy of two decades. We love youse, fellow choobs. You can continue to follow Ali Robertson's exploits... The young men in our study were between the ages of 14 and 17 from families with low incomes and lived in high-crime neighborhoods. They were split into three groups. The first group received money on reloadable gift cards every week. The second group was offered an after-school program and received money on a gift card as long as they attended the first few sessions. The third group served as a comparison or âcontrol,â and participants were able to take advantage of the programming after the completion of the study. When asked about how they spent the money they had received, participants reported a variety of expenses. Some spent it on personal items and entertainment like clothes, video games, and activities such as amusement parks. Others reported using the money for necessities, such as helping out a parent with groceries or fixing a car. Some participants reported that they saved the money to reach goals such as purchasing a car or helping their family move out of their neighborhood and purchase a house. Receiving the cash transfer alone led to an increase in healthy behaviors. Participants who received the cash transfer were less likely than the control group to do things like drink alcohol, use marijuana, take prescription medication without a prescription, be in a physical fight, carry a weapon, or use a vapor product. Some participants said they felt the extra money helped them to perform better in school by allowing them to buy supplies, and others felt that the cash alone helped reduce crime. We also found that the cash transfer plus programming improved the financial health of participants, which may be because the after-school programming included financial education. Beyond the benefits of the cash, the young men who were offered and attended the after-school program noted that having a safe, neutral space to go after school helped them stay away from the violence in their neighborhoods.

SML's debut album emerges from a bold improvisational experiment at the now closed Los Angeles venue ETA. Five musicians engaged in free improvisation, playing without any guidelines or directives, embracing a pure, play-what-you-feel approach. One for the open-minded music lovers.
