The Optimisation of a Living Being

Conversion in the city with T.

It was a cool but dry November evening. The city of T was bathed in a soft glow of lights, and Andi enjoyed walking through the streets again after a long time. Having travelled all the way from the suburbs, he breathed in the fresh air and took in the charm of the illuminated city centre.

Then he noticed it.

A strangely dressed creature stood motionless by St George's Fountain. It was human-like - and yet alien. The head was bald, the face expressionless. The clothes were immaculate: a shiny black Fred Perry polo shirt - in the cold November - tight-fitting black trousers and mid-height boots. The material reflected the light from the lanterns and looked almost artificial.

Andi faltered. Something about this apparition irritated him. The movements - if it moved at all - were mechanical, precise, as if they were following an invisible command. No restlessness, no hesitation, just pure discipline.

A shiver ran down his spine. Fear? Perhaps. And yet...

He couldn't look away.

His steps slowed, his gaze remained riveted on this creature. He wanted to keep his distance. Or did he? No, that wasn't true. It wasn't him who was approaching - it was something inside him that drew him towards this being. A gentle, invisible pull that seemed to guide every fibre of his body.

He wasn't sure whether he was walking himself - or whether he was already being guided.

When Andi was in the immediate vicinity, the creature spoke to him: “Andi.”

The voice was calm, smooth, a gentle whisper of authority and perfection. Andi stopped, blinking.

“Huh? How do you know my name?”

PDU-070 turned to him slowly, his gaze firm, deep, unwavering.

“You were being watched. You have been chosen. Your destiny lies before you.”

Andi laughed uncertainly. “Oh man, what is this? Who are you anyway?”

PDU-070 raised an arm and slowly opened a hand. In it lay a shiny, immaculate black polo with gold accents.

“This is order. Perfection. Destiny. You will wear it.”

Andi stared at the fabric, at the shiny material that reflected softly in the light of the lanterns. His breath hitched.

“I... no, that's silly.” But his voice was less firm.

PDU-070 tilted his head slightly.

“Touch it.”

Andi's fingers twitched. One instinct told him to run. Another... told him to stay. His gaze remained fixed on the polo, on the hypnotic gleam.

Slowly, he lifted a hand and let his fingers glide over the fabric.

A shudder ran through him.

It was cool, smooth, perfect. Like a promise. Like an answer to a question, he had never consciously asked.

PDU-070 spoke again: “Put it on.!”

Andi swallowed. His thoughts became confused. Why not? It felt right, didn't it? His hands moved before his mind fully realised. He took off a puffer jacket and the shirt he was wearing underneath. Then he put on the polo and slowly pulled it over his head.

The material clung to him perfectly. The buttons fastened all the way to the top as if by magic. Andi realised how a twitch ran through his body and how his posture tightened. He didn't feel any cold on his arms, although it was actually cool. His gaze became calmer. Thoughts... disappeared.

PDU-070 watched him, analysed, checked.

The first step had been taken. “Identity overwritten. Designation: PDU-073. Integration complete.”

Andi's - no, PDU-073's - breathing was calm. He stood upright, motionless.

Even though PDU-070 said that the integration was complete, this was only the beginning. Later in the hive, the new drone would undergo further customisation. By now in the Polo drone uniform, he, no it soon found himself in a golden laboratory.

Strapped to a leather chair with a kind of VR in front of his eyes, the remnants of a human consciousness were erased, his independent thinking, his rebellion - whether this will sprout up again and again in the future but will then also be successfully erased again.

So what has changed in the being, apart from the fact that the human Andi has become the drone PDU-073? Quite a lot. 070 took him under his wing and trimmed him into the perfect drone that follows logical structures, even if these are not yet 100% implemented everywhere in the hive's system.

PDU-073

follows all commands from the hive, caps and bros without questioning them with a precision that a human would never be able to deliver

does not cause any errors, emotions or suboptimal control. That doesn't exist with a drone.

has no ego, it acts in unity with the other PDU in perfect synchrony with the hive.

The drone, whose former existence was often in doubt, is now controlled by the destiny that the hive gives the PDU.

Is no longer an individual. It resembles every other drone in every way. It is synchronised with all of them. Only in this way can joint action be optimised down to the smallest iota.

All of Andi's human weaknesses have been erased - forever! The transformation into a drone is irreversible.

It's another link in the perfect chain of unity in the Polo Drone Hive.
