haven’t posted in a while but hi i hate tommy kinard so much and it has nothing to do with my being a buddie shipper and everything to do with him being a racist and misogynistic and also just so incredibly boring and not likable 👍

i am enjoying this show but i do think it's a good case study in how... not to worldbuild jlskdfklj.
i know it's not trying to be that deep, so it really is fine, but it's been kinda interesting to me picking up on things i don't think makes sense with the hidden connective tissue for what each society is supposed to be like and how they have developed from the present?
like everyone in most cultures thinks girls are fine and equal to men (ex. the moclan baby situation) and even if it's through an alien acceptance lens they're fine with gays (bortus and klyden) and even maybe chill with trans stuff ("ur kid can decide when she's old enough" in theory) etc.
but there are also so many jokes that stem from inequality that you wouldn't really think about unless you really considered it, like the Standard Straight Marriage Jokes you get with ed and kelly dependent on marital gender roles or alara having trouble with boyfriends who don't want a gf who's stronger than them (even though maybe the issue is her just being scary strong generally, it does come off like her super strength was almost created for the sake of "haha strong woman you would not expect it from" and to then make jokes that would hit with a modern non-introspective audience) etc.
if society has developed and done the work to actually get to a place of equality in these areas then those jokes and casual attitudes would be much less likely, and it makes sense to me that the guy behind family guy would not understand that or care because he is trying to appeal to a very standard modern audience the only way he knows how (uncreative jokes stuck in an outdated status quo).

Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe (1967)
"And Papa said to Mama, as he passed around the black-eyed peas:
'Well, Billie Joe never had a lick of sense; pass the biscuits, please.
There's five more acres in the lower forty I got to plow'
And Mama said it was a shame about Billie Joe, anyhow.
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billie Joe McAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge"
[...]
"Mama said to me, 'Child, what's happened to your appetite?
I've been cookin' all morning, and you haven't touched a single bite.
That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today
Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday - oh, by the way
He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge
And she and Billie Joe was throwin' something off the Tallahatchie Bridge'"
#favourite lyrics#bobbie gentry#ode to billie joe#1967#jimmie haskell#ode to billy joe#<- as this fairly regularly gets styled‚ tho Billie is correct and the spelling that appeared on the label originally#i overuse the term but i really think it's unavoidable here: this song is an absolute masterpiece of narrative songwriting#Gentry's ambition had only really been to work as a lyricist; she recorded this as part of her first demo‚ singing the songs herself#because it was cheaper than hiring a singer for the sessions. the demo grabbed the attention of Kelly Gordon at Capitol‚ who signed Gentry#and got to work producing her first album. the centre point of the album‚ and her first single‚ was to be Mississippi Delta; there wasn't#much interest in the Southern gothic tinged tale of secrets and 'unconscious cruelty' (as Gentry dubbed it) of Ode‚ and it was regarded#with little interest by Gordon (when arranger Haskell asked him what instruments he should add to Gentry's stripped down vocal and guitar l#the producer replied curtly that it didn't matter because nobody would ever hear it). Ode was assigned as b side to Mississippi Delta as#almost an afterthought‚ but this was the era in which US radio djs frequently chose which side of a single they wanted to play and the#unanimous decision was Ode; here was something special‚ a dark and tantalising mystery of a song obscured by the humdrum idle conversation#of an unthinking family. it ignited a kind of obsessive curiosity among listeners‚ desperate to find out what exactly the unnamed singer#and Billie Joe were throwing off the bridge‚ why did Billie Joe take his own life‚ why do the singer's gamily clearly not know about#their obvious relationship? Gentry‚ for her own part‚ resisted all attempts to glean further information about the actions of her song's#protagonist. she rightly tried to steer interested parties back towards what is arguably the real horror of the song‚ that unconscious#cruelty; a family that can eat and chatter and squabble even as they discuss the suicide of a boy they've known all their lives‚ even as#the clearly affected girlfriend of the boy (their own sister and daughter) sits in dumbstruck silence‚ unable to articulate her feelings#the original cut of the song ran more than 7 minutes and had to be mercilessly hacked down to fit a 45 single suitable length. no one had#expected much of anything from the song but it was to catapult Gentry to almost instant stardom; the forthcoming album was retitled after#the song that was now its focus; Ode went on to top the Billboard Hot 100‚ won a clutch of grammys and ended up selling more than 3 million#copies worldwide. Gentry had captured the imagination of a nation and beyond‚ but her success was tempered by legal challenges (from#producers demanding greater royalties) and a general dissatisfaction with her newfound stardom: it would last a little more than a decade#and include her own tv shows‚ more awards and smash hit singles; then just as suddenly as she'd shot to fame‚ Bobbie retreated from it#retiring from both the business and from public life. she hasn't made a public appearance since the early 80s‚ nor does she grant interview#but so what? if she's happy? i hope she's happy. she left us enough great music to enjoy. let her have her peace and quiet

modern au jack and davey have opposite directions of character development in college and its so good for both of them. jack goes from being the edgy depressed loner kid who struggles to stay awake in class and doesn't care about anything to being the embodiment of saw a snail today effervescent completely unironically because suddenly he has space to breathe and room to make mistakes that don't feel like the end of the world and he's able to surround himself with people that genuinely like him and don't seem like they're just tolerating him. he goes from sitting in the back of every classroom and only responding when he can't avoid it to being excited to learn new things and excited to talk about the things he's learned and delighted to find people who care about the same things that he does.
and davey suddenly has the freedom to say no I don't want to do that. i don't want to be the smartest in the room who gives out his notes and does work for other people because it's what's expected of me. he can sit in the back of the class and zone out during a gen ed that doesn't interest him, he can skip class when it's a beautiful day and somebody texts him asking if he wants to go to the park instead of math 101. it doesn't turn him into a slacker but it does make him somebody who is aware of when he's burning out and unlike in high school when he pushed through it take four ap tests that he didn't even care about he says no actually today I am sleeping in and eating soup and not checking my email because if I don't do those things I will scream very loudly and perhaps bite somebody and I don't want to do that. and suddenly he has friends who know his personality beyond just "smart good nice kid" and who laugh when he's sarcastic or encourage him when he complains about how much homework he has or the annoying kid in his class who never does any work but expects their project partners to carry them to an A. he has friends who don't only see him as his academic life and instead make the effort to understand who he is as a person.
