FAME AU- newsies
im gonna talk a bit ab their jobs and stuff but also just hcs that i have of them in this universe. i would love to make this into an actual au with each chapter focusing on a different character but i dont have the time rn. the ships are javid, blush and ralbert, although i don't talk about them much. i rlly want to, maybe on another post i will
Jack “Cowboy” Kelly - Artist
Age when the au takes place: 26
Song: You’re On Your Own Kid - Taylor Swift
Jack would have grown up in the foster system. His parents died in a car crash when he was young, leaving him an orphan.
Since he was a kid he would’ve used art as a way to escape the shitty situation that he was in. He would’ve been in numerous bad foster homes, and he would’ve been failing school, but art would be the one constant that would allow him to escape.
Then at 15, he got adopted by Medda, and she took him to art classes and bought him proper supplies
Crutchie would be his foster brother
Jack went to art school. He started entering (and winning) contests, as well as publishing his art online. He got an agent and the attention of some important people who helped him in his journey, giving him positive critiques and advice.
Then someone really famous would’ve purchased one of his works and that made him blow up
Jack would live in an apartment in the centre of Manhattan. His apartment would always be a mess, and he’d usually do most of his paintings there, so a lot of things are permanently stained with acrylic.
He DIY’s a lot of his clothes, painting on his jeans and jackets and things like that. This was a habit that he kept since the foster system to try to make the shitty clothes he had a bit more him, and he never stopped doing it.
This also means that he DIY’s so many things in his apartment, and it always turns out amazing. Doesn’t like the colour of that couch? He dyes it. Feels like the wall is too bare? He’ll paint something over it. Feels like the windows are too boring? He’ll buy a kit and make them into fake-stained windows that he can peel off when he wants to, in case he wants to sell the apartment or he gets bored of it.
He’s also amazing at gift-giving because he always makes sure to write a card or add something handmade to the actual gift. He used to give his boyfriend handmade flowers so they’d last forever before, yknow, they broke up (he would’ve chated on Jack)
Other than art, he would be a big sports fan. He would love F1 and would eventually get a VIP pass to the paddock. He’d be a Red Bull fan.
David “Mouth” Jacobs - Director
Age when the au takes place: 26
Song: the lakes - Taylor Swift
David’s mother would have been an actress. She hadn’t been very famous, but it already gave him an in the industry.
He used to participate in the school musicals as the “director’s assistant”.
He preferred movies over the theatre though, and he often wrote his own movies that he would’ve loved to direct someday.
He made a lot of short films with his friends and participated in different contests, building his portfolio for when he went to college.
In college, he continued to participate in many different movie contests and got a lot of recognition for his short films. He would have a very distinct movie style, very much giving “dark academia”.
He’d be given various awards for his work and eventually, he’d get to direct a full movie. It would do pretty well for being his debut.
He’d continue creating short films and co-directing some movies. He’d start working on more important movies and gaining a large following.
His most popular movie would be one that would’ve been inspired by a painting. One of Jack’s paintings. It would be about the obsessed artist trope (think Black Swan or Whiplash).
David would live in Boston, and most of his short films would be filmed there.
Outside of directing, David reads a lot, it’s his way of escaping from the world for a moment.
He’d love vintage books and would have them scattered all around his house. He’s a big fan of the classics.
Has a black cat named Dawn.
He’s a very private person. He doesn’t really date much, and he doesn’t post stuff online. This all changed when he met Jack, of course.
Antonio “Racetrack” Higgins - Formula 1
Age when the au takes place: 23
Song: Labyrinth - Taylor Swift
Racing number: 16
He drives for Ferrari
He’d come from a well-off family, but they wouldn’t be rich. His dad would’ve been an F2 driver, but he never made it to F1. He would’ve been a huge Ferrari fan, something that he passed on to his son.
Started karting when he was 5 years old
His parents would’ve gotten divorced when he was 7. He would’ve blamed himself because they used to fight a lot over him doing karting. His mom didn’t want him anywhere near racing, but his dad supported him fully.
He’d have a 5-year difference with his little brother
After his mom remarried, she moved to France with his little brother (Romeo), while Race stayed in Italy with his dad.
At some point, Race almost had to quit racing because his dad wouldn’t have been able to afford it. However, his stepdad offered to help, and they had no choice but to accept. Race would have a really bad relationship with his stepdad and his mother, he would’ve been much closer to his dad.
He joined the Ferrari Driving Academy, wanting to drive for them once he joined F1
He joined F1 when he was 19, and joined Ferrari a year later, full filling his lifelong dream.
The same year he joined Ferrari his mother died.
His goal is to win a championship someday, and is currently second in the driver’s standings. But Red Bull is dominating and unbeatable, so the chances of winning this year are slim.
He would live in Rome. He has 2 cats, a Ragdoll called Sofia (but he calls her Sof) and an orange cat called Stella
He would meet Jack in the paddock and they’d hit it off immediately, become really good friends. Despite the fact that Jack was there to support Red Bull. He’d know who Jack was because his ex-girlfriend would’ve been an artist and a huge fan.
Outside of racing, he would love music. He’d play the piano and the guitar. He started composing his own songs after his mom died and continued after he broke up with his girlfriend (they would’ve dated for 2 years, and broken up a year before the au started). But he’d keep them to himself.
Think folklore and evermore (particularly seven, the lakes and tolerate it)
However, he would mostly listen to rock music, completely different from what he composed.
His favourite band is “Untitled”, and he’d go see them when they came to Italy on their world tour.
Albert DaSilva, Kid Blink, Jojo de la Guerra and Finch Cortez - Band
Band Name: Untitled (I'm bad at names, if I think of smth better I might change it)
Genre: Rock
Albert and Finch met in high school and became best friends. Finch played the guitar and Albert played the drums, and they usually did covers of songs together.
Flash forward to college and they meet Blink. They went to college together studying music composition and became close with Blink, who plays the bass guitar. Suddenly they have a new addition to their band. At this point, their still just making covers of songs.
Then they meet Jojo, who also joins their band. He sings. After this, they start making their own songs and playing at bars. They got noticed by a record label and signed a contract.
They gathered a large following when their first album was released, but they blew up with the lead single of their second album. After that, they quickly rose to fame.
In each album, there is one song dedicated/about each of the members, but they never say which song is about who
Fans love to speculate, though, and a lot of the time they get it right
They all live in Manhattan.
Albert
Age when the AU takes place: 24
Song: I Can See You - Taylor Swift
Lives with Finch, their roommates.
They have a dog named Cheese. Why? No one knows.
His mom would’ve died soon after he was born, and he’d grow up with his dad and older brothers. They’d struggle a bit financially, his dad would be working all the time and when he’d be home he would usually be drunk.
He’d never be abusive, just incredibly distant and Albert would have to take care of him after his brothers moved out.
Once he moved out he kind of cut contact with most of his family
He has a Twitch account and streams all the time. He’s a big fan of video games, particularly horror games.
He often calls with friends and plays with them, for example, he calls Elmer a lot (his best friend other than Finch)
He also skates
He tried to take Finch to a skate park to teach him once and it did not end up well
Probably the most disorganized person you’re ever going to meet. His room is a mess and it drives Finch insane.
He would have a bit of a reputation when it comes to dating. He usually wouldn’t get involved in anything serious that lasted more than a couple of months.
Then he’d do a world tour where he would meet Race, a Formula 1 driver who apparently loved their music, and all that would change
Finch
Age when the AU takes place: 24
Song: Welcome To New York - Taylor Swift
Lives with Albert, their roommates.
He’s a big movie fan, particularly sci-fi movies.
He’s not much of an animal person. But in middle school, he used to have an obsession with birds, so Albert started calling him “Finch” and it just stuck
He’s really close to his family. His parents would be so supportive of him, they’d be there at almost every concert. They’d be really proud.
His fashion sense is atrocious but he’s trying his best and that’s what matters
He loves cooking. He’s really good at it too, and he’s always trying new recipes.
He has a TikTok account that has literally nothing to do with the band, it’s just him sharing the recipes he made. He also has a series where he does a meal for each college major and things like that.
He has a secret Tumblr account where he interacts with fans and no one knows it’s him.
People are aware of the existence of this account, but no one knows it’s him
Kid Blink
Age when the AU takes place: 25
Song: It's Nice To Have A Friend - Taylor Swift
Lives with his boyfriend, Mush, who owns a cat cafe.
They met in freshman year of high school and became best friends before they started dating in Junior year
He gives their PR manager a heart attack each time he opens his mouth because this man has absolutely no filter.
Not allowed to post his own things on Twitter because he would get cancelled in a second
He used to watch BuzzFeed Unsolved religiously, but now he watches Watcher all the time.
Always knows the most random and disturbing facts. He’ll say the most unhinged things at the most unexpected times and provide no context.
He only posts things about the band, he’s a very private person and doesn’t like people getting in his business.
His private account however is basically a fan account for his boyfriend, since that’s almost all he posts about. And his cat cafe.
Only his family and friends follow him there, though.
Also has a secret Tumblr account, but it’s just to see the Watcher posts.
Middle kid energy
Jojo
Age when the AU takes place: 23
Song: Foolish One - Taylor Swift
He does pottery!!
He’s a plant dad and all of his flower pots are made by him
He writes his own music separate from the band, but he doesn’t release any of them. It’s just something he does for fun sometimes
He was practically raised by his older brother since his parents weren’t great
His brother was the one who helped pay for his singing lessons when he was a kid. His parents didn't want him to have anything to do with music, they didn't think he'd make anything of himself
But his brother supported him fully and it got him to where he is now
Wears his heart on his sleeve and tends to get hurt because of it

Elena Setién — Moonlit Reveries (Thrill Jockey)
Elena Setién’s soft, eerie songs blend folk and jazz, pop and torch music in shivering nocturnal trance-states that haunt the space they live in. She has not, up to now, been much concerned with rhythm or propulsion — hers are not generally songs that make you want to move — but that all changed when she decided to collaborate with Wilco percussionist Glenn Kotche.
The two met when Kotche toured Spain with Wilco in 2022 and soon began conspiring to splice Kotche’s beats to Setién’s witchy melodies. Kotche’s A Beat a Week drum instruction manual served as a jumping off point. Setién constructed “Surfacing” and “Arrival” atop percussive patterns from the book. The process turned collaborative with Setién sending her ideas off to Kotche, him altering or embellishing them and sending them back. The idea of beats filtered into the other instrumentation as well. Setién’s guitar playing, while quiet, has a sharp rhythmic edge. One track, “Pintado II” grew out of Kotche’s On Fillmore project; it emerges as an intricate mesh of tonal percussion and Setién’s narcotic voice.
These are two very different artists who converge without compromising. The music exists in a neutral area that is distinct from either player’s comfort zone. “Asking” for instance, lets fly a rambunctious spray of percussion, a bit that rattles and clatters and intermittently explodes, rampaging all over the kit in a repeating pattern. It runs under the whole song, an ongoing undercurrent of punch and aggression that transforms Setién’s fluid melody, giving it urgency and fire. A cacophony of mallet play — xylophone, vibraphone, marimba, something like that — cascades in like splinters of multi-colored glass. The tune is sharper, more insistent than it might otherwise have been.
The title track is subtler in the way it employs rhythm, framing a baroque folk fairy tale narrative in ghostly motifs of harpsicord, guitar and glockenspiel. “When all our queens/Left wandering/They walked through fields/Through valleys deep,” croons Setién, in a fay, wondering way, amid glittering sonic architectures. Yet even the tracks where Kotche didn’t participate, especially “Coloured Lizards” have a syncopated swagger, a stop start guitar pattern anchoring Setién’s folk romantic delivery. She sounds a little like Josephine Foster on this one.
The idea of collaboration is to take you out of your own head, to prompt new ideas and approaches, and Moonlight Reveries clearly accomplishes that. This album won’t shock or alienate longtime fans of Setién—it’s not that far from what she was doing in Unfamiliar Minds—but it does extend the idea of what this songwriter is capable of. Bravo for that and for the risk worth taking.

Possibly Doing a "Begins" Series
So, I've kind of been obsessing over 9-1-1/9-1-1: Lone Star lately and think that it would be cool to do a "Begins" Series with characters from One Chicago and maybe The Resident, by using the information that we have gotten from the shows about them (after I finish all my other WIPs, but I actually wanna have them written ahead of time instead of writing as I go). I have an idea of how I want some of them to go, others are undecided as of right now and some I'm debating if I should do one for said character. But if you want to see a particular moment for a character that was canonically mentioned (ie Mouch and his dad sending letters when he was a child) let me know. (Also, the order of the characters listed have nothing to do with the potential order that they get done. The Chicago Shows are in the order of my character charts and The Resident Characters are in the order that I pulled their names from fandom Wiki).

Star, January 25
You can now buy a copy of this issue for your very own at my eBay store: https://www.ebay.com/str/bradentonbooks
Cover: Meghan Markle’s life is a lie
Page 1: Emma Stone’s baby joy -- after months of speculation thrilled mom-to-be Emma debuts her baby bump during a hike with a pal
Page 2: Contents, Sutton Foster and Nico Tortorella and Debi Mazar filmed a scene for Younger’s final season
Page 4: Candace Cameron Bure came out swinging again against commenters on a holiday pic she posted on Instagram of her and her husband Valeri Bure and kids Natasha and Lev and Maksim and she got a load of snark for the heavily retouched pic
Page 5: Karlie Kloss usually steers clear of dishing on her sister- and brother-in-law Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner but on January 6 Karlie broke her silence after Ivanka tweeted and quickly deleted a post calling a pro-Trump mob storming the U.S. Capitol building American patriots and Karlie begged to differ tweeting that accepting the results of a legitimate democratic election is patriotic and when one Twitter user urged her to tell her brother-in-law and sister-in-law she lamented I’ve tried
* Olivia Jade Giannulli posted a clip of herself dancing maskless at a beach-house party and the New Year’s Day Insta came days after her mom Lori Loughlin was sprung from prison and the clip which featured her toasting with a glass of vino came less than a month after she aired her regrets in an interview -- the party girl feels she’s suffered too from the scandal and she was just letting off steam
* Rege-Jean Page has sent pulses racing with his groundbreaking role as the rakish Duke of Hastings in Bridgerton but it was his reference to James Bond’s legendary martini preference in a tweet that had fans speculating he’s in line to take over from Daniel Craig as the next 007 -- the biracial actor has been vocal about the importance of inclusive casting
Page 6: Jessica Simpson whose own father once bragged about her double Ds is enjoying a very particular benefit of her recent 100-lb slimdown which is she’s gone down two cup sizes and she says she feels more athletic and her body is more in proportion -- in addition to easing back pain she feels a different sort of weight has lifted because all that talk about her breasts made her feel they overshadowed her as a person
* Drew Barrymore is nursing a private pain as her ex-husband Will Kopelman went public with his new love Vogue staffer Alexandra Michler and the two are serious while Drew is still single and she is alone and feeling like the odd man out -- there are times when Drew absolutely regrets divorcing Will especially now that he’s dating again and Drew was holding out hope for a reunion but when she discovered Will was seeing someone new she knew there was a good chance it may not happen and even worse her own attempts at finding romance have fallen flat as she’s tried online dating a few times but had no luck
* Star Spots the Stars -- Jimmy Fallon and wife Nancy Juvonen, Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, Ryan Seacrest, Jenna Dewan, Aubrey Plaza, JD Martinez
Page 8: Star Shots -- John Legend gave his son Miles a zip around the water on a jet ski during a vacation in St. Barths, Ellen DeGeneres on a bike after lunch with friends in Santa Barbara, Brooke Burke dressed in wintry workout gear sipped a hot drink
Page 10: Leslie Jones on Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Christina Aguilera playing video games with her son Max
Page 12: Kit Harington takes his dog for a walk in London, Sean “Diddy” Combs passed out gift cards and gift bags to those in need in Miami, Mindy Kaling online shopping
Page 13: Gabrielle Union and her husband Dwyane Wade on a hike, Jenny McCarthy maneuvered her trash bins to the curb in Chicago
Page 14: Coach Tom Jones on The Voice UK, EJ Johnson at the beach in Miami, Margaret Qualley and boyfriend Shia LaBeouf on a hike in L.A., Dua Lipa eating during a getaway in Tulum, Mexico
Page 16: Normal or Not? Tori Spelling out in Los Angeles with her dogs and husband Dean McDermott -- normal, Nicole Kidman and an alpaca -- not normal
Page 17: Jennifer Garner playing the drinking game from The Crown in which participants who can’t repeat a phrase correctly must smudge their faces -- not normal, Kate Bosworth celebrated her birthday with husband Michael Polish and some bubbly in Beverly Hills -- normal
Page 18: Fashion -- stars stun in Pantone colors of the year Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray -- Mindy Kaling, Thandie Newton, Jorja Smith
Page 19: Ariana Grande, Zoey Deutch
Page 24: Olivia Wilde made news stepping out as Harry Styles’ plus-one to his agent’s wedding in Montecito and he introduced her as his girlfriend as the two mingled and held hands -- the next day Harry and Olivia who hit it off on the set of her upcoming psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling in which he stars were spotted heading into his L.A. home -- wedding guests weren’t the only ones surprised by the new couple as Olivia’s ex Jason Sudeikis dad to her kids Otis and Daisy has been nurturing hope of a reunion since their split in late 2020 and he was surprised she’d go for one of the actors in her movie -- now Olivia is conflicted because she’s having fun with Harry but there’s no denying her feelings for Jason continue to linger and some are betting her romance with Harry will flame out in no time and no one would be surprised if Olivia and Jason ended up getting back together
Page 25: Florence Pugh and Zach Braff had Hollywood abuzz after a pal wished her a happy birthday on social media and cryptically referred to her as FPB -- that extra B caused many to surmise that Florence has quietly exchanged vows with Zach and taken his last name and Florence hasn’t done much to shut down speculation by strategically hiding her ring finger in photos shared on Instagram
* Zoe Kravitz filed for divorce from Karl Glusman after 18 months of marriage because she was fed up with having an MIA husband -- things between the two hit a breaking point after Karl failed to check in with his wife while filming Please Baby Please in Butte, Montana -- Zoe couldn’t take being ignored and when she and Karl finally spoke they had a big fight and she pulled the plug shortly afterwards
* They called it quits in October after two years together but Bethenny Frankel and Paul Bernon are now giving their relationship another shot -- they split up because their long-distance romance proved too difficult but Bethenny really missed him and it turns out Paul missed her too and it seems second time’s a charm because a loved-up Bethenny and Paul indulged in PDA at a Miami studio as they watched her daughter paint with the artist
Page 26: Cover Story -- Meghan Markle exposed -- Meghan’s older half-sister is dishing some major dirt about the former actress’ rise to royalty in her new bombshell book
Page 30: Inside Kim Kardashian’s escape -- Kim reached her breaking point with Kanye West months ago but took many steps before she finally left him

Tylenol and Tequila Part 3
written by @anotheronechicagobog
Warnings: swearing, mature themes, fire, chemical reactions
A/N: This one is REALLY long. I don’t know the word count but it took up ten pages in google docs with size 11 font, so I hope you guys like it!
Also, I came up with the term ‘Hermann Horde’ to describe him and his kids, I think it’s hilarious, but let me know what you gusy think.
Stella Kidd has always wanted to be a mother. To experience the joy, fear, love, frustration, cheer that being a parent brings. The only problem? She didn’t want to be the one to actually give birth to them and she didn’t agree with surrogacy. But she had been homeless and in the foster system when she wasn’t living with her addict parents, so she knew that there were lots of kids who just needed someone to love them. This had been a point of contention between her and Grant. Biological kid(d)s are the only ones he would accept. It would end in screaming matches, Grant saying at some point that it would happen whether she liked it or not. That should have been a huge red flag for her, but she’d loved him so she ignored it.
With Kelly though, he understood. He understood that if she got pregnant she would have to take leave from being a firefighter for a while, so long as there weren’t complications with the pregnancy that were severe enough to end her career, and that was something he would never ask or expect her to do. When Stella wanted to have a serious conversation about kids he watched her collapse in relief that he shared her opinions. That he thought it would be better for both of them to foster older kids, pre-teens and teenagers.
Kelly had never liked Grant. Always thought that he was a manipulative piece of shit, and every even remotely serious conversation had been about Grant ignoring Stella’s wants, needs, and choices. If Grant showed his face again it would take an army and at least one dragon to stop him from killing Grant.
The only people they’d told were Boden, cause he’d need to know as their chief, Matt and Sylvie because they’d need someone to talk to about it besides each other and references. They’d all been ecstatic for the couple, Sylvie in particular. She didn’t remember much about her time in foster care, but she remembered enough to know how terrible, nightmarish, and broken it was.
Kylie was the first kid who popped up in both their minds. Her dad was a neglectful cop who had multiple families and her mom was a heroin addict. Kylie did what she could to remain afloat, to distance herself from who her parents are and what they do, but it was hard. Her dad just showing up and doing whatever the fuck he wanted and leaving ruins in his wake, and her mom was only around a third of the time, almost always on a bender with whoever she was ‘dating’ that week. Kylie had spent most of her childhood living with her grandma after being placed there by social services but was dumped back on her mom after seven months after her grandma passed three months in the system. The four months she spent being tossed between group homes and foster families were not times she advertised or wanted to remember. Girls on Fire had brought the support that she hadn’t had for so long into her life. When she missed a Girls on Fire meeting Stella got worried, it didn’t correlate with her character.
A call to detective Jay Halstead from Kelly brought out the depressing truth. Her mom had gotten high, signed her out of school, and then dragged her to a scummy abandoned warehouse to help her score some product. Kylie managed to slip away and call 911 for help after the dealer smacked her around for saying ‘no’. But he found her at the end of the call, and he didn’t react well. They’d rushed over to the ED when they found out where she was.
Stella actually started to cry when she saw the state Kylie was in. So frail, monitors beeping, covered in bandages, arm in a sling. Kelly tracked down Natalie to figure out what her condition was, and it wasn’t good. Amelia Wood, a social worker showed up just as she finished explaining everything.
“Hello, I’m Amelia Woods from DCFS, here for Kylie Reyez?”
“Of course, Ms. Woods as I was just explaining to lieutenant Severide, Kylie has a minor concussion five bruised ribs, a shoulder fracture, and we’re waiting on the results from her sexual assault kit.”
“And why would you be explaining it to lieutenant Severide? The only relatives listed in her file are her deceased grandmother, ineligible father detective Mark Reyez, and criminally negligent mother Daphne Adams.”
“My girlfriend Stella Kidd runs a program called Girls on Fire, a fire department outreach program for girls, and Kylie’s signed up for it. When she didn’t show up for the last session she had a really bad feeling and Kylie wasn’t answering her phone so we called some people and found out she was here. We rushed over, Stella’s actually with her now. What, uh, what’s going to happen to Kylie?”
“Well she’s not going to live with either of her parents, and she has no other family, so she’ll go into the system.”
“Group home or foster family?”
“... Group home to start... We’ll try to find a foster for her but that’s unlikely at her age.”
“Stella and I are in the final stages of getting approved as a foster family, would it be possible for Kylie to be placed with us?”
“Who’s the social worker assigned to you?”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a week in the ED Kylie was permitted to leave, and go to Severide and Kidd’s apartment. Kylie was ecstatic, Stella and Kelly had made it clear that their apartment was a safe place for Kylie, that all she would have to do was be a teenager. There would be some rules and curfew in place but Stella and Kelly were just focusing on making sure that Kylie had a stable home.
When they got home Stella gingerly showed Kylie her room. It was plain, had been seen Matt moved out the year before, but Sylvie had offered to help Kylie decorate it when she was comfortable. “We can arrange for that shopping trip in a few days, let’s just get you settled in first.”
“Ladies, our deep dish order has been placed and should be here in forty minutes. I think that maybe we should take this time to talk about some rules and stuff. Then we can chow down on pizza.”
Stella chuckled at her boyfriend’s attempt at humour, and Kylie smiled at how they looked at each other. “That sounds like a good idea Kel. You ready Kylie?”
“Yeah, let’s hear it.”
“Okay, so curfew is 10:30pm, but if there’s something special going on that night just let us know in advance and we can extend it.”
“School is priority, if you want a part-time job or something that’s fine, but school comes first.”
“Look, we don’t want you drinking or having sex-”
Gagging from Kylie interrupted Stella, “yeah, yeah, it’s gross to talk about with your guardians but we get that as a teenager that’s just something you might get into, so if you need condoms or a ride home or something, just let us know or call, we just want you to be safe. We won’t exactly be happy that you’re partying or whatever, but anything’s better than playing keep-up.”
“And if there’s stuff you want to talk about, we’re here. And if you don’t want to talk to us, that’s okay too. As long as you’re talking to someone, a teacher, guidance counselor, Brett, whoever, just as long as you talk to someone.”
“When we’re on shift we’ll both have our phones on if you need us, we’ll leave you by yourself so no parties, please. If you want to have a friend over that’s fine, but let us know beforehand and we’d like to meet them first.”
“The system actually covers therapy bills so you could even talk to a therapist if you want. And as far as the money from the government goes, we’ll budget it so that some pitches into groceries, and there’s some spending money for your room or stuff you want, but the rest will go into a post-secondary school fund for you, which we’ll also be personally putting some money into.”
“... Really?”
“Yes, really. We are here to make sure that you have support, and that includes making sure you have some money for when you’re out of high school.”
“Thank you...”
“You really don’t need to say ‘thank you’ sweetheart, we’re here to help and love you as much as we can.” The doorbell ended their conversation that left tears brimming the eyes of all three, “I guess it’s time for pizza.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There had been some disagreements and adjustments, but overall everyone could agree it had been a complete success. A month later, after the move-in and hours spent convincing Kylie that having money spent on her was okay, Sylvie, Stella and Kylie met up at the nice shopping area of downtown with money to spend. The plan was to spend the morning shopping then meet up with Kelly and the rest of 51 at the park for a picnic with the lovely souls from 51, 21, and MED.
“Where to first, Kylie?”
“Umm, a bedding store maybe?”
“Kylie, we talked about this, it’s okay that we want to spend money on you, okay?”
“Kylie, I went through this too. I still get freaked out when people spend money on me, especially if I didn’t have time to discourage them from doing so. I’m still pretty stingy if I’m honest. I know that it’s hard, you feel panicked and like you’re not worth this, you’re not worth this waste of money. What I find helps is taking lots of deep breaths, going straight to the sale and clearance racks, and remembering that all the stores we’re going to are family businesses, and that by spending money here we are supporting small businesses and people who work really hard to earn money and own a store of their own.”
Kylie thought for a moment, taking in Sylvie’s advice. “Okay, I’ll try that.”
“Okay.”
“So, where to?”
“I could use a couple shirts...” Stella and Sylvie smiled brightly, grabbed onto an arm, and marched over to the nearest boutique.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After dropping everything off at the apartment the three women made it to the park a thirty minutes after the designated time. “‘Bout time you three showed up!”
“Cool it, Halstead, besides, shouldn’t you be spending your girlfriend?”
“Hailey is not my girlfriend!”
“Y’know, it’s kinda funny, Stella didn’t even mention a Hailey...”
“Hey! I have more than enough people on my back about this, I don’t need a kid I haven’t met- oh waiiiiit, you’re Kidd and Severide’s foster right? Well, I’m Jay Halstead, Severide hasn't shut up about you, everyone’s really excited to meet you.”
“Including Hailey.” Jay froze for a second, before an exasperated expression took over his face, then he leaned his head back and groaned loudly before stomping away, leaving nothing but laughter in his wake.
“You know what Stella? I think Kylie should meet Hailey first.”
“Ooooh, yes.”
“Hailey! We have someone we want you to meet!”
They all ran across the field to her after hearing the panicked ‘NOooOOOooo’ from Jay Halstead. The confused blonde greeted them with a chuckle. “Hi, I’m Hailey Upton, you must be Kylie. It’s really great to meet you.”
“You too, I’ve heard a lot about how badass you are.”
“Oh, don’t listen to all that you hear-”
“Ig- *gasp* ignore her. She’s awesome.” A stressed-looking Jay sputtered out as he took his place beside Hailey. “Well,” Kylie slyley started, “I’m not sure that you’re unbiased, but I guess I’ll take your word for it.” Jay panicked, Hailey was confused, Stella and Sylvie were doing everything in their power not to laugh.
“Wha-”
“Maybe she should meet Casey next, hmmm?” He gave a well-placed look to Sylvie and she started to pout.”
“That was cold.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It had been a long day, filled with grilled food, cake games, and new family members. Kylie was happy though. It had been a lot, but she felt like she connected with and could count on everyone there. She was full of food and happiness. “That was really fun. It was great to meet everyone.”
“Really you didn’t feel like it was too much?”
“We were worried that we’d overwhelm you.”
“No, I think it was good to do it this way, like ripping off a bandaid.”
“Good. Well we have shift tomorrow, starting at six in the morning. So we should probably head to bed.”
“I’m gonna do the same, I am beat the Hermann Horde really knows how to wear it out of you.”
“The Hermann Horde, oh my god... That describes them perfectly.”
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shift had gone rather smoothly so far, a couple fire drills at local schools, a few fall-down and PD calls for ambo 61, and a smoke-detector check in an apartment building. All was well and good until around two o’clock when Stella got a horrifying phone call from Kylie.
“Stella?”
“Kylie? What’s wrong your voice sounds really shaky.” Kelly’s head snapped up at her words and she gestured for him to come over, he’d arrived and Stella turned the phone so they could both hear and talk just as they heard screams. “Kylie? Kylie!”
“There’s a fire, it’s getting big and we’re trapped and I don’t know what to do.”
“Okay, where is the fire? What lit it? Has anyone called 911 yet?” Kelly prattled off doing his best to be helpful instead of curling into a ball and crying. “Chem room, sulfuric acid and a chlorate, and everyone else is calling 911.”
“Okay, are you near a carbon dioxide extinguisher?”
“Uh, cupboard next to me... Yeah!”
“Pull out the pin, lift the nossel and aim at the BASE of the fire by squeezing the levers together.”
They didn’t get a response but could hear what was happening, it took a few minutes before Kylie picked up the phone again, “it’s ou-t but smoldering or- smoking a bit? What-ever, it was down enough for all of us to- get out, so- we’re running.”
“Oh thank god. We’ll come right away- or do you want us to meet you at the hospital? You need to get medical attention if you were near ractive sulfuric acid.”
“Uh, how about I just keep you on the phone as I get checked out, we can figure it out from there?”
“Okay, we- we’ll wait.” Stella and Kelly just about collapsed in relief, all the members of 51 who had gathered around them smiled and offered them as much comfort as possible. “Hey, um- my foster parents? They’re on the line, they’re firefighters, uh, just want to know what hospital we’re going to, if I’m okay.”
“Well, tell...”
“Stella Kidd and Lieutenant Kelly Severide.”
“Kidd and Lieutenant Severide to meet us at Chicago MED.”
“We’re leaving now.” They both froze and stared at Boden like deers in headlights. “Alright,” in Boden’s usual gruff voice, “mount up everybody. We’re going to MED. We’ll keep our radios on and leave from there if necessary. Kidd, Severide, I’ll need to call in a floater to cover one of you for the rest of shift. It’ll be easier if it’s Kidd, cause at least one of you has to stay with Kylie. I’ll see what I can do about a floater for you though, Severide.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amelia met them at the hospital, there were some incident forms, but because Kylie called them for help and saved herself and her classmates because of it, Amelia just gave them a smile and told them they were doing great. Kylie needed to stay at MED for a couple days because of the smoke she inhaled, but so did her classmates and they kept each other entertained. Then OFI showed up. Seager was quite obviously still carrying a torch for Kelly, but was still very polite to Stella and Kylie. “Well, your story matches up with the evidence we have and the statements collected from your teacher and 29 classmates.”
“Wait, she has 30 classmates, there’s 31 kids in her class.”
“Yes, well, Chad is the only one who’s story is off, but that’s because all the evidence points to him messing around and starting the fire. None of you can say anything to any of the other victims and their families.”
“Got it.”
Seager left with a longing look directed at Kelly, but no one was looking at her. Kylie had started to tear up, the reality that she could have died finally hitting her at full force, and both her parents (what she’d started calling Stella and Kelly in her head) immediately tended to her. Hugging her, letting her know they were there, and that it was okay to cry. So Kylie lay there, shaking and sobbing, as the two people who loved her just as much as her grandmother had, did everything they could to let her know they loved her, and that they had been scared too. That they would be sad if she had died. At some point the tears stopped being about fear and started being about love.
This was the scene that Casey walked in on, he quietly stepped away, knowing just how intimate this moment was supposed to be. He walked back to the waiting room. “Not yet guys, they need some time to themselves. I think it might be better if we came back later with some food or something.” A call came over their walkies before anyone got a chance to agree with their captain.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kylie had transferred schools after the fire, the smoke from the chemical reaction that started the fire had gotten into a vent and messed up the entire air con system, meaning the school had to be shut down for the rest of the year while it was replaced. The air quality was deemed too dangerous for students and staff to even retrieve their stuff from the school. So Kylie had been transferred to the same high school as Lee Henry Hermann. He’d shown her around the school and introduced her to his friends. Things had been going really well until 51 got a call to a mattress factory fire. Kylie hadn’t been around when Otis died, but she could still see how everyone was affected by his death. The fire was so bad that the news had been reporting on it since before school even started and new, terrifying developments were still coming. Kylie was scared, her stomach was so twisted she felt what she could only describe as extreme nausea, she couldn’t focus, and she was practically jumping out of her skin everytime she got a notification on her phone. She couldn’t find Lee anywhere either, she had no way of knowing how he’d be handling it. While he was around to know Otis, his dad had been a firefighter longer than he’d been alive. Maybe he had coping methods.
After another panic grab for her phone Kylie was excused from class with a sympathetic glance from her teacher. She wandered the halls for a few minutes, doing everything not to cry, not to feel hopeless, when one of Lee's friends spotted her. “Henry heads to the greenhouse on bad days.” Was all Donovan said before walking away. Kylie took a breath, hiked her bag higher onto her shoulder, and headed to the greenhouse. What more did she have to fear?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The door was unlocked, so she walked in and... Immediately took off her cardigan. “Lee?”
“Kylie...” His voice wasn’t confident like it usually was, it was hoarse and weak. She maneuvered her way around all the planter boxes before finding Lee sitting on a small, poorly made if she was being honest, wooden bench that was surrounded by peonies of varying colours. It was strange seeing Lee the way he was. Sickly pale, eyes red, exhausted lax muscles. “You’re scared too.”
“Terrified... I don’t know how you’ve dealt with this your whole life...” Kylie couldn’t control her emotions anymore. Lee tugged her by the wrist to sit beside him and wrapped her in his arms. “I don’t know how I’ve dealt with it either. I don’t think I do, really.”
“Does chocolate help? Cause I’ve got some in my bag...”
“Oh, yes. Chocolate helps.” The rest of their last two periods were spent crying, hugging, and eating chocolate in the greenhouse. They didn’t find out until they were leaving that the last of the fire had been put out, and that no first responders had died, and while three had been injured none of them were from firehouse 51.
“This may seem childish, and I know you don’t do this, but I think I’m gonna head to 51... I need to see that they’re okay for myself...”
“The only reason my siblings and I don’t do that is because our mom manages to keep them in the dark still. She used the child safety functions to keep the news from giving us alerts, she only tells us something happened after the ash has settled, or she just tells us that dad had a bad shift a half hour before he gets home. She runs so much interference, but, I... I disabled the child safety stuff when I was twelve, so that I could watch some PG-14 movies, I didn’t find out about the news notifications until a month later. I mean, I saw that news apps were specifically selected when I disabled the setting, but I didn’t think anything of it until they got a call to a train wreck. I had never been more afraid for my dad in my life. I hadn’t fully comprehended just how dangerous my dad’s job was until that day. Every five minutes there was a... higher body count, reports of trouble at the scene, a video of a gas explosion that 51 was barely able to control... I strongly believe that it was the worst day of my life. I wanted to go to the firehouse, I told my mom that I found out from friends, I didn’t want her to turn the news off again... But she told me I couldn’t go see him. I had to wait. It was a long four hour hours. So, I get it. If you want, there’s some time before I have to pick up my brothers and sister. How about we go pick up some doughnuts, then my siblings, and then make a visit to 51.”
“Are you sure? I don’t want you to feel like you have to do this for me.”
“Yeah, this way I get to see my dad after fearing for his life all day and I can use you being worried as an excuse when my mom asks.” Kylie laughed as Lee smirked, proud of his plan.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Hey Brett.”
“Hey, I brought you doughnuts, courtesy of the Hermann Horde and Kylie.”
“How annoyed is Hermann that the nickname caught on?”
“Very.”
“So, how do the kids look? I imagine at least Lee Henry and Kylie saw the news today.”
“Kylie looked like she was going to burst into tears when she saw Stella and Severide. Lee looked like a weight came off his shoulders when he saw Hermann. But then, he uh...”
“Hm?”
“Lee Henry looked at Kylie and smiled, really softly, and he got this puppy dog look in his eyes.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. I know what I saw.”
“You think there’s something going on?”
“Not yet... But I’m keeping my eye out.”

Pittsburgh Magazine 50 Greatest Pittsburghers of All Time
In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Pittsburgh Magazine recently issued a review of the “50 Greatest Pittsburghers of All Time” (January 2019). The magazine’s editorial team sought to rank those who “best embodied the idea of a ‘greatest’ Pittsburgher…those who contributed to Pittsburgh’s story – while becoming great in their own right.”
Not only does the list highlight 50 great individual Pittsburghers, it also highlights more than 200 years of Pittsburgh history. Even more interesting? Many of these stories are documented in our stacks, either in the papers of a “Greatest Pittsburgher” or within a related collection.
We thought it would be fun to highlight some of those collections in the hopes that today’s Pittsburghers continue to explore our rich documentary history. The following list is presented in the order of Pittsburgh Magazine’s ranking:
• Fred Rogers [Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Collection]
American television personality Fred Rogers moved to Pittsburgh in the 1950s to work as a puppeteer for the public television station (WQED) children’s show The Children’s Corner. He studied theology at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and in 1963 was ordained a minister of the United Presbyterian Church. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood began in Toronto, moved to WQED in Pittsburgh in 1966, and onto PBS in 1970. The popular program ran for 895 episodes, from 1968-2001. The bulk of this collection relates to the production and promotion of the program from 1970 to 1990 and includes publicity photographs, press kits, scripts, and episode summaries and records.
• Jonas Salk [Jonas Salk Polio Collection (UA.90.F89)]
Jonas Salk accepted a research appointment at the University of Pittsburgh medical school in 1947 and began work on what would become his breakthrough polio vaccine the following year. Human trials began in 1954 and the vaccine was declared viable for mass production in April 1955. The Jonas Salk Polio Vaccine Collection consists of materials relating to the history of polio and the polio vaccine research and trials. Digital reproductions of some photographs are available online.
• Mary E. Schenley [Mary Schenley Land Deed (AIS.2015.07)]
Upon her father’s death (William Croghan Jr.) in 1850, Mary Schenley inherited a substantial amount of valuable Pittsburgh land originally belonging to her mother’s father, James O’Hara, making Schenley the largest property owner in Allegheny County. This document is an indenture, or real estate deed, between Edward and Mary Schenley and the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). The land described in this indenture became an important part of the construction of Pittsburgh’s passenger train station, Penn Station, built by the Pennsylvania Railroad between 1898-1903
• H.J. Heinz [United Food and Commercial Workers International Union Local 325, Pittsburgh, Pa. Records (AIS.1997.15)]
Formerly known as Canning and Pickle Workers Union Local 325, United Foods and Commercial Workers International Union Local 325 was founded in 1937 to represent employees of the H.J. Heinz Company, chiefly employed at the North Side plant in Pittsburgh. The records include contract books from 1941-1994, union constitutions and by-laws, a job description book, union newsletters, photographs, and oral histories. Also included are various publications of the H.J. Heinz Company written for their employees.
• Dr. Thomas Starzl [Thomas E. Starzl Papers (UA.90.F68)]
Dr. Thomas Starzl joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1981, where he continued to pioneer groundbreaking procedures for organ transplantation and advances in immunology he had begun earlier in his career. Learn more about his prolific medical career by visiting the Dr. Thomas E. Starzl Website, created in conjunction with our Thomas E. Starzl Papers.
• George Westinghouse [Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company Contracts Collection (AIS.1963.24)]
Industrialist and inventor of the compressed air brake, George Westinghouse incorporated the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company in 1891. With its giant factory located in East Pittsburgh, Pa., the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company soon became the Edison General Electric Company's main rival in the contest to provide electricity to the United States. Records include blueprints, photographs, carbon copies of telegrams, signed forms, memorandums, and correspondence.
• Andrew Mellon [A. W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust Records (AIS.1980.29)]
Founded by Andrew W. Mellon in 1930, the A. W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust made over $200,000,000 in contributions during its 50-year life, including funding for the National Gallery of Art,
Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, Pitt’s Graduate School of Public Health, and the Metropolitan Pittsburgh Educational Television Station, forerunner of WQED. The A. W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust records document the internal business operations of the Trust and its relation with the organizations, institutions, and programs that it funded.
• Henry Clay Frick [Henry Clay Frick Business Records (AIS.2002.06)]
Industrialist Henry Clay Frick made his millions in the coke, coal, and steel industries of late 19th century western Pennsylvania, ascending to Chairman of the Carnegie Steel Company (the precursor to the United States Steel Corporation) before falling out with Andrew Carnegie and eventually shifting his business and social interests to New York City. Later in life, Frick supported the arts and education philanthropically in both New York and Pittsburgh. The Henry Clay Frick Business Records contain material reflecting the business and financial activities of Frick (1849-1919) with particular relevance to Pittsburgh and the western Pennsylvania region. The bulk of the collection dates from 1881 to 1914, when Frick was most active in the coal and steel industry in Pittsburgh. Digital reproductions of this collection are available online.
• David L. Lawrence [David Leo Lawrence Papers (AIS.1978.15)]
David L. Lawrence – Pitt educated and a former University Trustee – served as Mayor of Pittsburgh for 14 years before serving one term as Governor of Pennsylvania. He stepped down in 1963 to become a special assistant to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson and remained in that capacity until his death in 1966. These papers contain biographical materials, personal correspondence, materials from his trip to Japan in 1962, and materials regarding local and state Democratic Party political activities between 1960-1966.
• Hugh Henry Brackenridge [Hugh Henry Brackenridge and Andrew Watson Papers (DAR.1937.04)]
Scottish immigrant Hugh Henry Brackenridge served in George Washington's army during the Revolutionary War as a chaplain, and is wholly or partly credited with the establishment of Allegheny County, Pittsburgh’s first bookstore and newspaper, and the Pittsburgh Academy (University of Pittsburgh). He served in the Pennsylvania State Assembly and later on the State Supreme Court. The majority of the collection consists of the business papers and correspondence of Hugh Henry Brackenridge and Andrew Watson regarding various properties in Pittsburgh. Digital reproductions of this collection are available online.
• Stephen Foster [Center for American Music Foster Hall Collection]
Stephen Foster grew up in Allegheny City (now Pittsburgh's North Side), where he heard contrasting musical styles in Scots-Irish, German, Italian and American neighborhoods and in public halls. From 1851 until his death, he wrote songs professionally, becoming the first person in the United States to earn his living solely through the sale of compositions to the public including "Lou'siana Belle”, "Susanna" (Oh! Susanna), and "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair". The Foster Hall Collection provides a valuable record of Stephen Foster's composition process, nineteenth century life in the United States, the music business, Pittsburgh history, and Foster's legacy. Digital reproductions of portions of the collection are available online.
• Father Charles Owen Rice [Charles Owen Rice Papers (AIS.1976.11)]
Msgr. Charles Owen Rice was ordained into the priesthood in 1934 following studies at Duquesne University and St. Vincent Seminary, both in Pittsburgh. After ordination in 1934, he became involved with labor unions, aiding in founding the Association of Catholic Trade Unionists. Rice also founded St. Joseph's House of Hospitality, a long running weekly radio program, and the Catholic Radical Alliance. The collection includes correspondence, subject files, transcripts of radio broadcasts, manuscripts, case files, family papers, audiotapes, photographs and a film.
• Dan Marino [Documenting Pitt]
Hometown hero Dan Marino was born in Pittsburgh’s South Oakland neighborhood, mere blocks from the University where he would star as a student-athlete from 1979 until 1982. As quarterback of the Pitt Panthers football team Marino led the team to a No. 1 ranking and 1982 Sugar Bowl victory over Georgia. Check out Documenting Pitt for digitized versions of Pitt Football publications, the Pitt News student newspaper, and yearbooks documenting the Marino years.
• Gene Kelly [Gene Kelly Alumni Files (UA.6.3.2)]
Eugene Curran Kelly was born in Pittsburgh, and following a brief stint at Penn State University, returned home and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from Pitt in 1933. Kelly found success as a multi-talented individual excelling at acting, singing, dancing, choreographing, producing, as well as motion picture directing. This collection contains collected materials including correspondence, news clippings, a scrapbook, and a photo album.
• Myron Cope [Pitt News (Documenting Pitt)]
Myron Kopelman, beloved Pittsburgh Steelers radio personality, was a Pitt Alum who cut his teeth as a sports writer for the Pitt News between 1947 and 1950. The University Archives maintains a complete collection of The Pitt Weekly and Pitt News, which were recently digitized and made available via Documenting Pitt.
John Forbes [Darlington Digital Library]
General John Forbes, a Scottish-born British general who served in America during the French and Indian war, was responsible for capturing Fort Duquesne and renaming it Fort Pitt. Our Darlington Digital Library, created from the first major collection of books, manuscripts, atlases, and maps donated to the University of Pittsburgh by William M. Darlington, documents early colonial American history in Western Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley.
• Elsie Hillman [Elsie H. Hillman Papers (AIS.2013.02)]
Elsie Hilliard Hillman was widely recognized for her political leadership in the Republican Party at the local, state, and national levels, playing a vital role in the elections of politicians such as Governors Dick Thornburgh and Tom Ridge, Senator H. John Heinz III, State Treasurer Barbara Hafer and President George H.W. Bush. Her dedication to her hometown of Pittsburgh resonated through both her civic and philanthropic leadership. The collection contains a variety of materials including correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, and audio-video materials. The Elsie H.
