my contribution to the TDI fandom: last names
you've heard of gen 1 last names, now get ready for gen 4 last names!
Hezekias ‘Zee’ Abara. abara means spirit and i think it's a name that fits zee a lot
Damien Calvin. 'calvin', as inspired by melvin calvin, an american biochemist
Ripper Marchetti. in italian, marchetti means warlike, and i like to think ripper has some italian heritage!
Bowie Finley. finley = fair-haired hero, and hasn't our fair-haired boy proven to be a knight in shining armour, rescuing raj from tapioca pudding sharks and giving his very best until the finale?
Raj Bhatti
Wayne Curran (Curran = hero. our little guy is badass c'mon!!! also this was of irish descent i think? i can see it)
Chase Cooper. while researching names, for chase, i looked up 'youtuber last names'. one thing led to another, and i discovered some buddy of that annoying ass loser ben shapiro, whose last name was cooper. considering i hate chase (and i love double initials), i thought this would be fitting!
Caleb Campbell. shares his name with a model. no need to go into more detail.
Axel Ectorius (Ectorius = hero in latin. don't tell me you can't see it. also very close to victorious, which i wished for her to be this season *sad emoji*)
Julia Amana. amana means trust, faithful, which is a very ironic name for julia to have, so therefore, a must-have
Mary-Kate ‘MK’ Nghiem. nghiem = stern, strict, rigorous; similarly to julia, MK is not at all what her name represents, so, funny
Nichelle LaDonna (canon name not much to say here)
Emma Baker (both because baker is a simple name to me and i see emma as just a simple girl (just like me fr) and because i could totally see her as a baker)
Priya Chanda (Chanda = of the moon)
Millie Nisim. nisim, as in, miracles, because millie, unprepared and under pressure, still made it to the finale... and because her voice actress also voiced zoey, and both millie and zoey were, coincidentally, the third contestant in their respective debut season
Lauren ‘Scary Girl’ Graves (do i need to explain this?)

I remember early on in the trump administration- I was sitting at the mechanic's lobby and he was on the news with a giant stack of papers wrapped in a big red ribbon. And he talked about how the regulations imposed by previous administrations got in the way of business and prevented every day americans from reaching the american dream. And he took a pair of shears and cut the ribbon, symbolically cutting the red tape, as a promise to undo all regulations that hot in the way of moving forward.
And I looked to the woman waiting in the lobby with me, in her 60s, who shook her head along with me at the gesture, because we both lived on a low income side of town and people in our tax bracket know what happens when regulations are slack- people get sick, they get hurt, they die.
Disaster happens when people are careless and each regulation is written in blood.
Fuck that guy.
Picture id/transcript: (a screenshot of a news report by Heather Cox Richardson from february 15 2023)
But the derailment of fifty Norfolk Southern train cars, eleven of which carried hazardous chemicals, near East Palestine, Ohio, near the northeastern border of the state on February 3 has powerfully illustrated the downsides of deregulation. The accident released highly toxic chemicals into the air, water, and ground, causing a massive fire and forcing about 5,000 nearby residents in Ohio and Pennsylvania to evacuate. On February 6, when it appeared some of the rail cars would explode, officials allowed the company to release and burn the toxic vinyl chloride stored in it. The controlled burn sent highly toxic phosgene, used as a weapon in World War I, into the air.
Republican Ohio governor Mike DeWine has refused federal assistance from President Biden, who, he said, called to offer “anything you need.” DeWine said he had not called back to take him up on the offer. “We will not hesitate to do that if we’re seeing a problem or anything, but I’m not seeing it,” he said.
Just over the border, Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, said that Norfolk Southern had botched its response to the accident. “Norfolk Southern has repeatedly assured us of the safety of their rail cars—in fact, leading Norfolk Southern personnel described them to me as ‘the Cadillac of rail cars’—yet despite these assertions, these were the same cars that Norfolk Southern personnel rushed to vent and burn without gathering input from state and local leaders. Norfolk Southern’s well known opposition to modern regulations [requires] further scrutiny and investigation to limit the devastating effects of future accidents on people’s lives, property, businesses, and the environment.”
Shapiro was likely referring to the fact that in 2017, after donors from the railroad industry poured more than $6 million into Republican political campaigns, the Trump administration got rid of a rule imposed by the Obama administration that required better braking systems on rail cars that carried hazardous flammable materials.
According to David Sirota, Julia Rock, Rebecca Burns, and Matthew Cunningham-Cook, writing in the investigative journal The Lever, Norfolk Southern supported the repeal, telling regulators new electronically controlled pneumatic brakes on high-hazard flammable trains (HHFT) would “impose tremendous costs without providing offsetting safety benefits.” Railroads also lobbied to limit the definition of HFFT to cover primarily trains that carry oil, not industrial chemicals. The train that derailed in Ohio was not classified as an HHFT.
Nonetheless, Ohio’s new far-right Republican senator J. D. Vance went on the Fox News Channel show of personality Tucker Carlson to blame the Biden administration for the accident. He said there was no excuse for failing infrastructure after the passage last year of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, and said that the administration is too focused on “environmental racism and other ridiculous things.” We are, he said, “ruled by unserious people.”

Quote
Judy Heumann was the first person I called when, in 1987, I reported my first story on disability rights. Judy, who contracted polio when she was 18 months old, gave me the quote that perfectly summed up that little-known civil rights movement. "Disability only becomes a tragedy when society fails to provide the things we need to lead our lives — job opportunities or barrier-free buildings, for example," she said. "It is not a tragedy to me that I'm living in a wheelchair." That idea seemed so unexpected and strange that my editors at a newsmagazine decided not to publish my story.
Joseph Shapiro quoting Judy Heumann in a beautiful obituary at NPR. Activist Judy Heumann led a reimagining of what it means to be disabled
Julia Métraux tweeted:
May Judith Heumann's memory be a blessing.
And let's make it the norm that disabled advocates are able to become disabled elders.

max's november 2023 reads
so many online articles this month. which is maybe why i feel like i'm making 0 progress on my hard copy books. in december i'll need to reprioritize, it seems. i also wrote next to nothing this month, which probably explains why i read so many online articles.
fiction
Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene, books 5-6
the latter half of Lavinia by Ursula K. Le Guin (again)
Shakespeare's Richard III (again, + i started Linda Charnes' Notorious Identity)
Gregor and the Curse of the Warmbloods by Suzanne Collins (review)
Gregor and the Marks of Secret by Suzanne Collins (review)
Vergil's Georgics, book 3
i continue to chug away at asoiaf #3 but god knows it is neverending
nonfiction
Getting Involved and Staying Regulated by Devon Price (↳ on finding your place in the fight for palestinian liberation)
The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction by Ursula K. Le Guin (↳ on the patriarchal domination of the war narrative, and our other options)
The Cool Kid's Philosopher by Nathan J. Robinson (↳ on Ben Shapiro)
Propaganda 101: How To Defend A Massacre by Nathan J. Robinson (↳ on biased reporting, using the I/P conflict as an example, though this is from 2018 rather than recent)
A Guide For High School Students On How To Avoid Propaganda by Nathan J. Robinson (↳ what the title says; i found it useful despite not being in high school anymore)
the latter half of Laziness Does Not Exist by Devon Price (review)
What Do We Do with the Art of Monstrous Men? by Clare Dederer (↳ found this one rather disappointing. i like the start, but the gender takes feel lukewarm and imo there's not enough emphasis on the structural vs. individual. this is a nice counterpoint)
Physical Destruction in Whole or in Part by Saree Makdisi (↳ "What we’re witnessing in Gaza, in other words, is not self-defense; it is an opportunistic offensive. It is not a “war,” the word used mendaciously and misleadingly by most of the mainstream Western press; it is a campaign of genocidal violence.")
the first chapter of Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano
the first two chapters of The Great White Bard: How To Love Shakespeare While Talking About Race by Farah Karim-Cooper
a close read of my MFA statement of purpose by Brandon Taylor (↳ on goals, responsibilities, and fictions)
On Mental Hospitals by Ozy Brennan (↳ this is pretty short but very worth it)
How An Algorithm Feels From Inside by Eliezer Yudkowsky (↳ on the psychology of the tree-falls-in-a-forest question)
Scrupulosity Sequence #3: Load-Bearing Things by Ozy Brennan (↳ posts i am clinging to with my fingernails)
Why Are AMAB Trans People Denied The Closet? by Julia Serano (↳ on "gendered socialization" and closeted transfemininity)
Trans Masc Misogyny and the Red Six of Spades by Jude Ellison S. Doyle (↳ "No-one is ever actually a man. Everyone is always in the act of proving they’re a man, first by dominating women and children, then by dominating other men, establishing higher and higher rungs of man-ness until at the end, presumably, the one Real Man in existence gets to be in charge of everyone and everything else.")
Henry Kissinger, War Criminal Beloved By America's Ruling Class, Finally Dies by Spenser Ackerman (↳ clicked for the title, stayed for the comprehensive and vicious takedown of kissinger's crimes)
#max.txt#readings#i also read some fanfiction but that's between me and god.#if you're wondering how i have the time for this i don't. i should be writing. i also don't talk to anyone

Quote
It's a mistake to think of Macready and Forrest's performances [as Macbeth] as a showdown between highbrow purist and lowbrow crowd-pleaser: both performers today would seem wildly over the top. Shakespeare's Macbeth is bold yet contemplative, committed to a brutal path to power yet tortured by the consequences of that choice, leaving actors considerable leeway in how to approach the role. Yet the play didn't offer an opportunity- as, say Julias Caesar or Coriolanus did- to explore competing political views; the differences between British and American styles would turn on issues of character. Forrest, in keeping with how he approached most roles, emphasized Macbeth's boldness and played him as "the ferocious chief of a barbarous tribe," a warrior who furiously hurls a goblet over the head of Banquo's ghost and nearly strangles a messenger who brings bad tidings. Forest showed little interest in exploring Macbeth's reflective side or his guilty conscience...He had an intuitive grasp of what values his fellow countrymen identified with, and gave them a Macbeth, as one admirer put it, who was "a man there to do his three hours' work; brawlingly it may be, sturdily, and with great outlay of muscular power, but there's a big heart thrown in. Macbeth was Macready's favorite role. He offered playgoers a more thoughtful and tormented hero. Central to his interpretation was how much Macbeth's character is altered after killing Duncan. His "crouching form and stealthy, felon-like step of the self-abased murderer" in this scene was, for many, unforgettable...And when confronted by Banquo's ghost, Macready "brought out the gnawing of conscience and insecurity of ill-gotten power", his haggard features and restless moving making it seem "as if the curse 'Macbeth shall sleep no more' has taken visible effect." Some found in this approach too much intellect and too little heart. Others were annoyed by his interminable pauses, through which he conveyed to the audience a character steeped in thought (a prompter in Bristol nearly drove Macready mad by feeding him the next line at every long pause, assuming that he was having trouble remembering the part.) Macready, anticipating method acting by many decades, was probably the first to have said that "I cannot act Macbeth without being Macbeth." Shakespeare leaves unclear whether, when Macbeth tells Macduff "I will not fight with thee", he utters those words either cravenly or scornfully. Macready spoke them fearfully, and dies falling upon Macduff's sword, "in yielding weakness." In contrast, Forrest's manly Macbeth fights to his last breath. Even after Macduff disarms him and delivers a fatal blow, he manages to draw a dagger and, dying, "drives its point into the stage where it remains, quivering, by his side, as the curtain falls"- and the remainder of the play is cut. In this, perhaps more than in any other Shakespearean role, each man was understood as cultivating, and ultimately defining, his national character: Forrest the brash American, Macready the sensitive Englishman.
James Shapiro, Shakespeare in a Divided America
#shakespeare#history#theater#i am kind of cracking up at the thought of macbeth being ready to throw down with baquo's ghost#i support it#macbeth

My prediction for the new season
Hello. A while back I made a prediction on the elimination of the new cast on the assumption that the original promo photos revealed the full teams. But now that the mipcom posters revealed the teams I think I'll guess who's getting eliminated
16: Julia
Nothing about Julia really sticks out to me. My honest guess is she'll be a valley girl and get voted out first for screwing up
15: Wayne
Wayne seems to be the leader of his hockey team back home and I can imagine him trying to apply those skills to the game but doing poorly. I can also see Nichelle seeing him as a threat seeing as him and Raj could get someone else on their side for an easy alliance and be the first person she eliminates
14: Ripper
I think Ripper is an online name and that he'll be an avid internet user of some kind. I could see him also butting heads or being the Ezekiel of the season with some outdated world views which gets him eliminated (maybe being a stand in for Ben Shapiro fans or something? IDK hope not) but I see him butting heads with other members of the team and being the first person kicked off it
13: Millie
I see Millie as being a headstrong team mom leader type, but I also see her butting heads with Axel who would also want to claim leadership of the team. Eventually, Axel wins and forms an alliance (maybe with Chase or Damien) and Millie gets voted off
12: Emma
I think Emma will be the ditzy Lindsay type of the season. Maybe she'll work with Nichelle similar to Lindsay and Heather, but my current guess is that Nichelle will team up with Caleb and use his popularity to influence votes, with Emma being deemed unnecessary and voted off
11: Raj
I just don't see him getting to the merge without Wayne. Maybe he'll try to fill his shoes but not get that far before his elimination
10: Zee
Might be biased as a lot of people see him as a first boot, but he's my favourite design so far so I want him to make it. However, I think he'll be eliminated just before the merge as a liability to his team
9: Priya
I could see Priya being a more plain character like Sky or Zoey to bounce off the more animated members of the cast. But for now I think that role will go to chase while she gets eliminated by Axel's alliance
Merge (Damien, Axel, Chase, Scary Girl, Caleb, Nichelle, Bowie and MK remain)
8: Caleb
I think the first thing to be established in the merge is a rivalry between Axel and Nichelles alliances. I could see MK joining the other teams decision to vote off one of them out of fear the alliance gets too strong later. Eventually Axel's alliance chooses Caleb for his strength and charisma, but not before him and Bowie get together.
7: Axel
Nichelle uses the same paranoia tactic that worked on getting Caleb eliminated by Axel on her. Members outside of the alliance are convinced to vote her off to ensure she doesn't get too strong later
6: Scary Girl
I think Scary Girl will get eliminated in a sudden death elimination, or an Izzy-esque situation where everyone is just fed up with her antics. I still believe my theory that she's trans, and will come away from the experience with her new name and identity and walk away happy
5: Damien
I think once Axel gets eliminated, Damien will spend the rest of the season trying to get Nichelle and Bowie eliminated, going to almost concerning lengths to do so. I could see him getting eliminated in a sudden death challenge or Nichelle and Bowie getting either Chase or MK to vote him off
4 and 3: Bowie and Nichelle
With this being a 16 member cast and a 13 episode run, a double elimination has to happen eventually, and it'll end with a team up of Bowie and Nichelle Vs Chase and MK. At the end of the challenge, Bowie will throw the challenge for both of them, resulting in Nichelle losing her chance at the million
2: Chase
The de facto main character with the most focus this season. I think he'll be the amputee character and make it to the finale determined to prove those who doubted him wrong, but lose in the finale to...
1: MK
I think MK will end up winning the season. I see her being a relaxed slacker type who can think outside the box and provide creative solutions when she needs to. She would also have the WT Cody effect where she'd make it far simply by merging and then not having much of an involvement with any drama.
So that was my prediction for the new season. Please let me know your ideas for who you think is winning or losing

Song of the Week: "My My Orca Card" by Who Is She?
Who is She? – “My My Orca Card” Who Is She? is a supergroup of Seattle artists Bree McKenna of Tacocat, Robin Edwards AKA Lisa Prank, and Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt. I haven’t heard of any of these artists/groups individually, but I am intrigued. The song is based on Le Tigre’s “My Metrocard” and is suitably named after a transit pass used in the Puget Sound region of Washington. …
