Chapter Thirty: Cream Wild Indigo

Two Christmases passed, bleeding into New Year’s, Mardi Gras, Easter, and the Fourth of July, and Jason still hadn’t left Houma or Josh. He kept telling himself he’d go home, but every time he thought to leave, he’d look at Josh, and his heart would ache so badly, he decided to stay behind. He’d taken things slowly, thinking that Josh’s effect would wane as his grief passed, but his affection for Josh only grew as time passed. One night, Jason woke up feeling oddly bold as he approached Josh’s bedroom door. He knocked, sheepishly standing outside, his gaze cast downward as he waited. Josh opened the door, wearing a pajama shirt and basketball shorts. He scratched his stomach, squinting at Jason in the dark. “Ça va?” Josh asked as he lifted Jason’s chin. “I forget you shy… You wanna come in here?” Jason nodded. “You wanna talk?” Jason shook his head. “You wanna do more than kiss?” Jason wasn’t sure how to answer, so he didn’t. “You wanna kiss me, though?” Jason nodded, staring into Josh’s eyes. 

Josh leaned in, and Jason closed his eyes, meeting Josh halfway as their lips touched. Jason placed a hand on his own stomach, acknowledging the difference and the butterflies that came with it. Josh was gentle, leaning back to see if Jason was willing to chase him… And Jason did more than just chase. He grabbed hold of Josh’s pajama shirt, pulling him close as their lips parted. “I love you,” Jason whispered as he took a breath. 

“I love you, too. Still want to come in?” Josh questioned. Jason nodded, taking Josh’s hand as he stepped past the threshold for the first time. They didn’t kiss again that night as Josh held the sheets up, allowing Jason to climb under them, sharing the warmth. They didn’t do anything except talk. 

“Peter’s my middle name,” Jason confessed. 

“Alright… I like when we go out dancin’. I pretend I don’t wanna dance, but I feel somethin’ special when you close to me like that,” Josh replied, his eyes squinting and eyebrows pulled together in a severe expression. Jason grinned. 

“You’re the first boy I ever loved. First boy I ever kissed,” Jason whispered. 

“I figured so… Your family don’t take light to that? Is that why you don’t write or call them?” Josh questioned. 

Jason shook his head. “No… It’s not like that. My mama, she’s had a few loves in her life. Not all of them were men,” Jason answered, “I just—. If I let them know where I am, they’ll ask me to come home… And I—. I wouldn’t hesitate. I’d go… But I know I’m not—. I’m not ready to go.”

“So, they don’t know you here?” Josh asked. Jason shook his head. “Why you leave?” 

“I’m adopted… It’s no secret. They took me in when I was eleven… My stepmother, who I believed was my birth mother died… And my mama took me into her home, taught me her way of doing things, and she gave me everything I could ever dream of and more. She offered me the best education available, all the books I could read, miles and miles of land to explore, and I ate. God, did I eat… It was a huge step up from the abandoned apartment I lived in alone… And my brother never saw me as anything but his brother. He used to sneak into the room to keep me company when I was sick…

“And my grandfather… I was so afraid of him for so long, but I know now that he wanted me to be strong. He had his way of doing things, and I can respect it now… But, I left home to meet my birth mother as soon as I learned her name. It didn’t work out, and I felt so guilty for leaving… Especially in the way things turned out… I couldn’t go home and look them in the eye after that,” Jason explained. Josh played with Jason’s long curls. 

“I know they miss you… You have a gentle way about you, so I know your little brother must miss you somethin’ awful,” Josh whispered. Jason frowned. “I didn’t—.”

“I missed his last three birthdays. He’s ten. He just turned ten a week and a half before my birthday, and I—. I’ve been with you for a year,” Jason whispered. 

“You should go see him… Buy him something nice,” Josh whispered. Jason closed his eyes, pretending to be tired. Josh kissed his forehead. “We won’t talk no more tonight.”

Jason didn’t sleep in Josh’s bed again for nearly two weeks. It took him that long to build up the courage to do what he wanted. He made love to Josh and afterward, he lay beside Josh, holding back tears. “Why you look so sad?” Josh questioned. “I knew you was leavin’... You have to see your folks.” 

“But I—. It might be a while before I see you again. I don’t want to leave you,” Jason whimpered. Josh smiled, not completely understanding the weight of Jason’s words. 

“I’m not goin’ nowhere. Family real important… I been tellin’ you to go home. Jason, you go home and you let them know somebody here love you… And when you come back, I’m gon’ show you how much I missed you,” Josh whispered as they shared a kiss. Jason’s tongue brushed Josh’s as tears rolled across his nose and down his right cheek. Josh pulled away and wiped Jason’s tears away. “Don’t you cry now, ma moitié.” 

Hearing Josh say that made Jason’s heart sick. He moaned in pain as he turned his face into the pillow. Josh rubbed Jason’s back. Jason “Do you promise to be careful until I get back? And take care of yourself? And—.” Jason took his necklace off and gave it to Josh. “Never take this off. Ever.” Jason kissed the jeweled charm that hung down to Josh’s chest. 

“Love charm?” Josh asked. Jason shook his head. 

“Protection,” Jason replied, “When I’m back in the United States, I’ll come for you.” 

“You don’t live in the US?” Josh questioned. Jason shook his head. 

“No, I grew up on an island. I’ll know you’re okay as long as you wear that charm,” Jason whispered. Josh nodded. And when Josh woke up, Jason was gone. The only evidence of his presence was the charm necklace and a letter.

Jason arrived home after three days, dog tired and longing to hear Josh’s voice. He could still smell Josh’s cologne on his skin. It smelled like Houma on the jet. He trekked through the forest for half a day, taking the long way home. It was dark when he arrived, and he quietly explained to the guards that he didn’t want Ra’s, Talia, or Damian notified of his return. They let him through, and he crept toward Damian’s room. Damian tossed and turned, muttering in his sleep. Jason smiled, touching Damian’s little hand only to be met by a knife. Jason grabbed his wrist before Damian could hold the blade to his throat. “Di, is that any way to say hello?” Jason asked. Damian’s eyes widened as he stared at Jason. “I’ve missed you.”

“Gē, did Grandfather call you home?” Damian whispered. Jason shook his head.

“Why would he call me home?” Jason questioned as he held Damian’s face in his hands. He could see a darkness in Damian’s eyes that wasn’t there before, but his soul smelled so warm and sweet like an infant. “Oh, how I’ve missed you, Di—. Damian.” 

Damian hugged Jason. “You’re going to Gotham with me… Aren’t you?” Damian asked. “I’m leaving soon.”

“I’ll have to talk to Grandfather in the morning before I can answer that. I’ve been gone so long, I’m not sure what he’ll want from me now,” Jason answered, “You’ve gotten so big. I missed you every day that I was gone. You’ve never been far from my mind.” 

“Saru’s—. She’s—.” Jason nodded and frowned. “Why didn’t you come home when—?”

“I’ll explain it to you in a little while. Will you be up for a little while? I want to sleep in here with you… I’ll tell you about my new friend,” Jason answered. Damian nodded, letting Jason go. They had so much catching up to do. It felt like several lifetimes since they were last in that room together.

Ceramic artist Josh Copus, USA.

Copus completed the Professional Crafts Program at Haywood Community College, and then enrolled at UNCA, getting his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He won the Center for Craft’s Windgate Fellowship, and used the $15,000 grant to make a down payment on some land in Marshall, buy an old Airstream trailer, and build his first wood-fired kiln.

“That first summer was the hardest I’ve ever worked in my life,” says Copus. “I was so determined to be an artist that it was almost unhealthy. I was so broke all the time, living in the trailer or sleeping in the studio and just trying to get a start.” He eventually got a gig tending bar at Wedge Brewing Co., but notes, “I would still work more than 40 hours in the studio every week.”

Derrotó a un Miami brillante pese a sus ausencias. El base de los Indiana Pacers volvió a marcar el paso en el triunfo ante los Portland Trail Blazers Los Milwaukee Bucks ganaron en Miami este martes por 124-131 y con mucho sufrimiento a unos Heat con titulares lesionados pero inspirados desde el triple. De este modo, los de Wisconsin pasan invictos con 4-0 a los cuartos de final del NBA In-Season Tournament, donde se medirán con los New York Knicks. Los 33 puntos y 10 rebotes de Giannis Antetokounmpo y los 32 puntos y 9 asistencias de Damian Lillard fueron claves para entender el triunfo de los Bucks, especialmente por el tramo final del ex de Portland. Fue a su vez una noche mágica de Miami desde el perímetro con 14 triples de 30 intentos, una fiabilidad altísima con Kyle Lowry, Duncan Robinson y Josh Richardson como puntales. Antetokounmpo lucha en pleno partido.LAPRESSE Bam Adebayo fue el máximo anotador de los locales con 31 puntos y 10 rebotes. El mexicano-estadounidense Jaime Jáquez Jr. aportó 14 puntos y 6 asistencias. Los Heat afrontaron el encuentro muy mermados. Milwaukee recuperó a Khris Middleton y el morbo se activó por ver a Lillard ante el equipo en el que quiso jugar. Milwaukee abusa El inicio de partido fue más propio de una tragedia para los locales que de un duelo por una plaza en la siguiente fase de este nuevo torneo. Fueron tres minutos y medio de abuso de los Bucks para un parcial de 2-12, con apenas una canasta solitaria de Bam Adebayo y la coralidad ofensiva de Milwaukee haciendo sangre Miami pareció noqueado, pero llegó a reaccionar lo suficiente para que el marcador no fuera tan doloroso. Varias buenas defensas les permitieron correr al ritmo que marcó Lowry, habilitando triples de Robinson y un recién integrado Caleb Martin que dieron aire a los locales. Final de infarto El ataque de Milwaukee pasaba cada vez más por las manos de Antetokounmpo, mientras que por los locales apareció la mejor versión de un Richardson fichado para días así. Rápidamente hizo 6 puntos en la reanudación y además aportó asistencias e intensidad defensiva sobre Lillard. La inspiración en el perímetro, junto a las poquísimas pérdidas de balón (6 al final del partido), permitieron competir a Miami, que solo se vio frustrado en el juego interior cuando Adebayo tuvo que batirse ante muchos y muy buenos defensores como Giannis, Portis o Brook López. Con 97-93, Miami cerró el tercer cuarto en ventaja y transmitiendo mejores sensaciones que Milwaukee. Ante la falta de respuesta de los habituales, fueron los minutos de Andre Jackson Jr. los que sostuvieron a los Bucks.

El novato entró para buscar inspiración en el triple y la encontró de inmediato con dos lanzamientos consecutivos sin fallo. Adebayo, ante López.LAPRESSE En ningún caso la distancia en el luminoso llegó a ser insalvable. Milwaukee 'hizo la goma' en el inicio de cuarto desde la desventaja de 5 puntos hasta igualar, pero le costó ponerse por delante. Lo hizo a 7.33 para el final con un mate de Middleton en transición rápida que puso el 106-108. Dr. Mutulu Shakur, ¡Presenté!

New Afrikan revolutionary elder, accupuncturist and revolutionary Dr. Mutulu Shakur joined the ancestors at the age of 72. He was released by the state after 36 years in prison, organizing, healing, educating and inspiring despite having developed a virulent bone cancer. Dr. Shakur spent the last year on this planet continuing his work, speaking and attending events, surrounded by loved ones. Rest in power.

Ruchell "Cinque" Magee Will Be free!

Politicized prisoner and jailhouse lawyer, Ruchell “Cinque” Magee, is slated to be released after 67 years in the California prison system. Cinque is 84 years old, arrested on an indeterminate sentence around a marijuana charge from 1963, he joined the attempted jailbreak during the Marin County Courthouse shootout in which Jonathan Jackson attempted to free William A. Christmas and James McClain. Ruchell was the sole survivor and was a co-defendant of Angela Davis until their cases were split. Rashid's Treatment Resumes, Thanks To Support!

As an update to past announcements from Kevin “Rashid” Johnson of the Revolutionary Intercommunal Black Panther Party, the public pressure from calls & emails apparently had the desired results and as of a few days ago he was receiving the medical treatment he needs for his prostate cancer, though he hasn’t received all of his papers so he can continue to pursue his lawsuits against the Virginia DOC since they were confiscated by prisoncrats, but he’s super thankful for public engagement to defend his health. More updates on his case can be found at rashidmod.com

Chapter Twenty-Nine: Lotus

Jason returned to Houma because he didn’t know where else to go. Sunlight poured in through the hotel window, waking him out of his sleep in the muggy room. He showered and changed clothes before taking a walk out in the summer air. It started to rain, and Jason stopped under a restaurant awning, watching as cars sped past, splashing the sidewalk. A drunk couple stumbled past, knocking into him. He didn’t complain or curse, but he watched the street. Then, he went to the movies for a few hours, ate breakfast at a nearby café, and walked across town to his job. Jason worked a part time job at a twenty-four hour gym. He taught two classes and ate lunch, reading books on his break. Then, he clocked out and ate dinner at the same restaurant every night. 

He kept the same schedule for months, but it felt pointless and empty. It was Christmas time before he decided to pack up his belongings and leave. He was on his way out of the hotel when he felt someone approach him from behind. The smell of wine and roses. The person behind him fell forward onto Jason, frightening Jason into an uncharacteristic stillness. “My fault, hope I didn’t mess you up none,” the man apologized. Jason turned around and swallowed hard. “You look like you been through hell… You don’t remember me. Do ya?” Concern colored his face as he stared at Jason, hoping for some sort of reaction. “I’m—.”

“Josh,” Jason whispered. Josh smiled and nodded. 

“Leaving again? You alone? I ain’t seen you since August… You look different, but I still feel like I known you my whole life when I look at your face. You got them kinda eyes. They hard to forget,” Josh smiled.

“I’m alone… I don’t—... I don’t know where I’m going,” Jason mumbled. 

Josh blinked hard. “Ain’t nobody supposed to be alone on Christmas… You could spend the holidays at my place,” Josh offered, “I owe you that at least. You got my life together.”

All of Jason’s grief poured out of him at that moment. He leaned forward, falling into Josh’s arms, and he sobbed. Josh wrapped his arms around Jason, holding him until he calmed down. “I’m sorry… It’s been a lot—.”

“Nah, it’s alright… Everybody cry a little bit every now and then,” Josh replied, “I ain’t gon’ do you nothin’. I just wanna talk a little… My daddy’s flight got canceled, so I’m all alone, too.” 

Jason pulled away, wiping his face and nodding. “Yeah… Yeah, I’d like that,” Jason answered. He took Josh’s hand. 

“You not gettin’ in no trouble holdin’ my hand like this, huh?” Josh questioned. Jason looked into his eyes, big and hazel. Blue and brown-ish green. “Peter, you still with somebody? I don’t wanna cause no trouble.”

“No, she—. She’s gone. She’s not coming back,” Jason mumbled. Josh softened as he led Jason to his apartment building. It almost reminded Jason of his childhood home before it fell into a state of disrepair. Josh pulled some Tupperware out of the fridge and tossed it in the microwave. 

“I’m nineteen. I’ll be twenty in July,” Josh stated. 

“I turned eighteen a week or two before I met you,” Jason answered. 

“Got any family?” Josh asked. 

“Grandfather on my mother’s side. Grandmother on my father’s side… Mom and little brother live with my grandfather… My dad died when I was eleven… You?” Jason asked as he untied his shoes and waited by the door. 

“My daddy lives in Kentucky, and he got uh—. I got a sister there. Her mama ain’t mine, but she’s good to me anyway… My mama, she left when I was eight years old, dropped me off at my daddy’s and never came back. I’m from here. My older brother died earlier this year. He got sick… We lived together, and I—. I um—. 

“He started getting little. I thought he uh—. My older brother had his problems… Couldn’t let his food sit. I used to sit with him all night, but it got worse. Sitting with him ain’t stop him from getting sick. So, I took him to one of them clinics, and I cleaned out my bank account trying to get him some help… Whole time he tells me it ain’t his head that’s sick. It’s his stomach…

“The clinic took all my money… No refund… My brother kept gettin’ sicker. Then, he fell asleep and couldn’t wake up. They sent him to the ER, ain’t even call me to say they did—.

“Anyway… I had no money for his treatment. I had to take him home… He begged to come home… That’s why it mean so much to me that you helped me that night. I was hurtin’ real bad inside before you came. Thank god you did. You saved my life… But I’m talkin’ too much,” Josh replied. Jason frowned. 

“That shouldn’t have happened,” Jason whispered, “To either of you.”  Josh shrugged. 

“He was good and kind… He in God’s heart,” Josh replied, “Ain’t no more sufferin’ for him. No more crying and bed baths and sleeping with all the blankets on him ‘cause he ain’t got no blood in him,” Josh replied, “I didn’t think I’d miss listening to him breathe so much. I miss him, but I’m grateful that I was there.” 

Jason’s bottom lip quivered as he studied the room. The picture of Josh and a wiry man sat on the mantle. “My girlfriend was murdered in September,” Jason confessed. There was no harm in telling parts of the truth as long as he knew when to withhold. Talia taught him that. The best lies were filled with truths. 

The microwave beeped, and Josh grabbed two forks from the kitchen drawer. “You hungry?” Josh asked as he dug in. Jason nodded to be polite, and he took the other fork, digging into his food. “A little gumbo.” 

Jason took a bite and smiled. “Red wine in the roux,” Jason whispered. It was the first time he’d smiled since Saru died. 

“That’s nice… I ain’t seen that smile since I met you. I like that smile. It look good on you,” Josh grinned. Jason couldn’t look up at him, but he couldn’t stop smiling either. “You shy? That’s alright. I say somethin’ you don’t like, you clear your throat, and I’ll be quiet.” 

“You haven’t said anything wrong. I—. I know I should move on, but I—.”

“I won’t rush you into nothin’… But I have to ask… You like me?” Josh questioned. Jason chuckled and nodded.

“I like you a lot… I’ve only ever liked one other person this way… Could I stay here for a few days? I can pay my way, but I just—. I don’t wanna be alone.”

“Yeah. You can stay. The couch pulls out, and you can watch whatever you want on the TV. I sleep pretty good, so you won’t wake me up unless you come get me for somethin’,” Josh answered as he ate. Jason ate with him, growing silent as he stole glances of Josh. “You don’t think I’m stupid. I can tell by the way you look at me… But I wanna know somethin’... You’re from somewhere else. I hear it in your voice. Why’d you stop pretendin’?” 

“Because I like you… And I came back, hoping I’d see you. I just wanted to see you, but I couldn’t find you, and I didn’t want to—. I didn’t want to overstep—. I wanted to run into you. I thought that if I could see you one more time, I’d be okay,” Jason mumbled. 

“Are you okay?” Josh asked. Jason shook his head.

“But I can admit it now,” Jason answered honestly.

A woman of British descent and from a family with reputable wizarding ancestry, she attended Hogwarts and was Sorted into Ravenclaw. She was a fine pupil in her day, and eventually landed a job as a Ministry worker, working in the Department of Mysteries. 

Father: Wallace Chung

A man with a long family background delving deep into banking and business, he graduated with an honours degree in economics at Oxford University. How he met his wife Carlotta was a mystery--in fact, his entire relationship with Carlotta was kept under wraps. However, he remained very faithful to her, even when the family was being pursued by Snatchers for a rumour that surrounded them since the eldest son’s disappearance.

Brother: Rodney Chung

Eight years older than Emmett, Rodney doesn’t know his younger brother as much as he would want to. The only memory he had of Emmett was that he was almost fatally shot when he was only 5--by someone armed with a gun and his head hidden with a wide-brimmed hat. He ended up going absolute berserk and detached himself from his family the moment he stepped into school. 

Background/History:

Emmett’s childhood was very black and white--loved to bits by his mother and father, but constantly living in his brother’s shadow with the only wish that he got to know his brother more and why he was acting so distant. When he was 5, the family was ambushed by a group of Muggles belonging to a Mafia group, the claim being that his father owed them a huge sum of money for ‘breaking a deal’. Enraged, Emmett’s father tried to drive them away, but the group did not leave quietly--they raised hell in the home, shooting multiple bullets and wrecking a lot of things. One of the bullets entered Emmett’s body, striking him in the collarbone and narrowly missing his heart. It was Rodney who drove them away in the end with a stash of dungbombs--and eventually the family had to move to a private estate in Cambridge, living in fear. Emmett was sent away to a hospital to recover from both his wound and the trauma.

(The Mafia group in question was actually Emmett’s father’s ‘friends’--the deal was that as long as he was friends with them, he would not find himself someone to marry. He had no idea that they intended to end his family line, and got married in secret anyway.)

Rodney disappeared two years before Emmett began his journey at Hogwarts. While the rest of the family worried for him, Emmett resented his brother’s decisions. Even if he wanted to bring Rodney back home, he knew he had a lot to owe the family.

Hogwarts Mystery unfolded.

Once Wallace’s case was cleared up, Emmett began to leave home more often, not just for his job at the Ministry (and he did love working in the same place as his mother, don’t get me wrong) but for hanging out more with his friends. He became less and less closed up, and eventually found a place to live on his own, though he always paid his parents and Rodney a visit just to hear Rodney’s full story and to try and mend the broken bond between them.

Emmett joined the Order of the Phoenix as a spy in early 1996.

In May 1998, Emmett joined the Battle of Hogwarts, but he did not survive. He was killed by a heavy pillar pinning him to the ground while running through the corridors. He was honoured alongside all the rest of the fallen, survived by his brother who already had a family of his own.

Personality:

Is it appropriate to say that Emmett has trust issues? Other than his parents, whom he cared for deeply, Emmett had a hard time opening up to new people. Rowan was the first to break through that shell, though, showing him that not all people are as disloyal as he had been led to believe. Sometimes he still retains some venom which he doesn’t hesitate to spit out in his retorts--some people had to help him monitor that. He speaks with no filter, preferring to be blunt and straightforward with his opinions and preferences. Despite his bully-like attitude, however, he’s very studious and works hard. His ambition laid in getting justice for his father.

Misc:

Emmett’s a popular boy with the girls at school--first pointed out by Penny, whom he once had a small crush on despite their polar opposites. However, he couldn’t stand being an object for girls to ogle at, and at one point he snapped at one of the girls for staring starry-eyed at him. 

Very few people knew about Emmett’s scar. Only his dorm mates knew, and once he was comfortable enough with his friends they would know of it too.
