Mark Sumner at Daily Kos:
Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance is a jerk. The Ohio senator is a feckless liar and inveterate blowhard whose squinty-eyed smirk only flashes after he’s delivered a line that he thinks will cause someone pain. There’s a very good reason why Vance is the most disliked figure on either party’s ticket this election year: He’s an unmitigated asshole.
But there’s a group of white men who believe that he may be something more. They see Vance’s ugly attacks on women, immigrants, and others as points to be celebrated. And they see him as the leader they’ve been looking for, a kind of anti-diversity messiah—a “Christian Prince” for a white nationalist America. As Mother Jones reports, these men pore over Vance’s words, searching for hidden signals with a kind of fervor usually reserved for “Bible code” numerologists. When Vance says America is “a group of people with a shared history and a common future” they don’t hear patriotic pablum. They hear a clear message that America was created for them and only them—and everyone else needs to go.
[...] They’re looking beyond, to a nation Trump barely hints at. For Trump supporters, he may be Orange Jesus, but for the “TheoBros” who thirst after Vance’s every word, Trump is more John the Baptist—the guy who made it possible for the real deal to take center stage. Christian nationalists have been a threat to American democracy for decades, but as Mother Jones reports, these aren’t the dusty old evangelists who have crowded the AM radio airwaves and supported past Republican candidates.
[...] The idea that the 19th Amendment should be repealed gives a good idea of what they think about Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris. As one of Vance’s biggest admirers writes, the idea of being governed by a woman is a “punishment from God.”  With her diverse ethnic background, her record of professional accomplishments, and her lack of biological children, Harris might as well be standing in a flaming red pentagram as far as these men are concerned. That her husband is Jewish is not a plus. Vance—a conservative Catholic married to a Hindu—doesn’t seem like the obvious candidate to carry the message of angry, narrow-minded, Protestant purity. However, he’s found that as long as he regularly voices their ideas on the national stage, the TheoBros seem willing to overlook his little peccadilloes and provide him with rabid support. He knows how to blow their dog whistles, and he blows them regularly.
Far-right male TheoBros, led by Joel Webbon and Douglas Wilson, are pushing to make Trump VP Pick J.D. Vance the “Christian Prince” of America with its Christian Nationalist vision.

Grande Prairie, Alta., is one step closer to establishing a municipal police service that would take over from the RCMP.
The City council voted 8-1 to establish a city police service and to end its contract with Canada's national police service during a public meeting that began Monday afternoon and ended shortly after midnight.
The RCMP will remain in the northwestern Alberta city while officers with the Grande Prairie Municipal Police Service are phased in over the next five years.
Grande Prairie's decision comes at a time when the provincial government is looking at the idea of doing away with its RCMP service contract in favour of a provincial police force that held engagement sessions in 2021 and 2022 but no final decisions have been made.
Mike Ellis, Alberta's minister of public safety and emergency services, said Grande Prairie city council completed a thorough review before Monday's vote, and other municipalities should be following suit.
The province is already preparing to entertain proposals from communities across the province looking to make the switch, he said.
"This is about empowering the municipalities," Ellis told reporters at the legislature on Tuesday.
Ellis said Grande Prairie has learned from the experience of Surrey, B.C., where a plan to ditch the RCMP proved costly and contentious.
Late last year, Surrey city council voted to keep the RCMP and ultimately end the years-long switch to a new municipal police force after millions of dollars had been spent on the change.
"They essentially put the cart before the horse on that," Ellis said, "and there were lessons learned from that, and it looks like Grande Prairie is headed down a positive path that is best for their community."
Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton said having a city police service will increase local oversight, cut down on bureaucracy, reduce policing costs, and aid in officer retention and recruitment.
The RCMP policed Grande Prairie, a city of 68,000 people 450 kilometres northwest of Edmonton, since 1937.
The union representing the RCMP opposes the change, characterizing the transition as politically motivated and ill-informed of the cost to taxpayers.
Thiessen, who cast the vote against the motion, urged the council to delay a decision and give residents and the council time to understand the implications of the change.
Clayton said the change has been under review for years and is needed to strengthen safety in Grande Prairie and improve communication between police and government.
"It's just not the model that serves us," she said of the RCMP, and there's been example after example where the machine cannot be adaptive to needs."
To start the transition, the city needs the approval of a service and needs to change methods.
Transitioning from the RCMP to the service is expected to cost $19 million, with the province committing $9.7 million over several years.
Following the vote, the council will also need to pass a bylaw to establish a commission and notify the government of its intention to transition away from the RCMP by March 31.
Grande Prairie has been exploring the idea of a municipal police service since the city's review of the proposed swap in 2021 included an analysis of current enforcement methods and public consultation.
Last September, the city commissioned MNP, paying the organization $250,000 to prepare a viability and transition study.
The MNP report indicated Grande Prairie leaders are worried about the long-term viability of having the RCMP police larger municipalities, recruitment issues, the rising cost of the RCMP's services, and the national force's bureaucracy.
Although the Grande Prairie RCMP has the budget for 110 police officers, it hasn't been fully staffed for the past five years, the report said.
Monday's council meeting saw a lengthy question period between the council and representatives from the National Police Federation, Alberta RCMP, and Grande Prairie RCMP.
In a statement Tuesday, Brian Sauvé, president of the National Police Federation, said the change is being approved without proper consultation or adequate investigation of the service changes.
Residents should expect the final cost to be considerably higher than $19 million, Sauvé said.
"The majority council decision to transition away from the Grande Prairie RCMP has been entirely politically motivated when politics have no place in policing decisions," he said.
This transition has been widely promoted and presented through rose-coloured glasses with little to no true consideration of overall transition costs, recruitment and retention, training, or technology and equipment.
The union will now focus on ensuring members are supported through the transition and the council is held accountable for its commitment to maintaining public safety.
In a statement Tuesday, Zablocki said he and his members are disappointed by the council's decision but remain committed to serving Grande Prairie residents during the transition period.
During a delegation to the council, the vote was tabled, and Zablocki acknowledged that staff retention has been a challenge in Grande Prairie, including at the higher levels of local command.
He also acknowledged backlogs in the criminal justice system that need to be addressed and said the RCMP needs to be more nimble and proactive in responding to ever-evolving community safety concerns.
He said that despite the challenges around retention, the RCMP provides a policing service "like no other national force and has the benefit of high levels of policing resources, specialized training, and national cooperation among officers and investigators.
