Cellar Dweller (1988)

Cellar Dweller is just a rejected episode of Tales From the Crypt stretched to feature-length. I know technically this film predates the episode Korman’s Kalamity, but not the 1952 issue that inspired it. Directed by John Carl Buechler, this movie has some fun moments but gets progressively worse as it goes along until the predictable ending. There’s clear enthusiasm present, but it’s not in the service of a story that’s particularly good, and the technical shortcuts scream “amateur hour”.

Thirty years ago, Colin Childress (Jeffrey Combs), creator of the grisly comic book series Cellar Dweller witnesses one of his illustrations come to life. In the ensuing struggle, his studio goes up in flames and Childress dies. Thirty years from now (yes, that phrasing is accurate; the movie’s titles are awkwardly phrased to make it look like this tale spans sixty years) comic book artist Whitney Taylor (Debrah Farentino) is inspired Childress' work and begins drawing the Cellar Dweller monster. Once again springing to life, it goes on a killing spree.

This plot is so thin you could feed it through a printing press. Whitney gets upset with someone, she draws a picture of Cellar Dweller killing them, it becomes true. How do you stop a monster who owes its existence to a comic book when it begins to kill on its own volition? I bet you can guess without any hints.

On a technical level, it leaves much to be desired. The Cellar Dweller looks fine I suppose. Kind of like a cross between a Mogwai and a gorilla, but the costume is well crafted. Something about the practical effects makes you all giddy and excited. The shortcomings are the same we always see in any movie featuring comic books: the illustrations. The art feature in this film flat-out sucks. The panels Jeffrey Combs as Colin Childress pretends to work on (he just adds shading to the shadows) are really good. After that initial scene, someone must've broken their hand or something. The Cellar Dweller is inconsistent from panel to panel, the layout is clumsy, the likenesses of all the human beings are poor. How much time it takes for Whitney to render a page varies from scene to scene. It's so obvious the pages were drawn by another artist and then printed. You can see the edges of the pixelated art. In the closeups, you can even see the distinct printing pattern of a 1980’s printer. It’s embarrassing.

Thankfully, Cellar Dweller is made of that right mix of cheesy horror, so-bad-it’s-good special effects, and rampant gore/nudity. I also have to give it credit for only lasting 77 minutes. Like it or not, at least it doesn't waste your time. If the tale of a drawing coming to life so it can chow on women’s arms and knock off people’s heads sounds like a good time to you, I recommend it. (On VHS, October 6, 2015)

TROLL (1986) Moins connu que TERRORVISION (1986) mais pourtant sorti la même année, TROLL est un film de John Carl Buechler -également responsable de FRIDAY THE 13TH PART. VII- THE NEW BLOOD (1988)-: on retrouve aux côtés du réalisateur la famille Band, la musique étant signée Richard Band -RE-ANIMATOR (1985) et TERRORVISION-, et la production menée par Charles et Albert Band. C’est sans surprise donc, que TROLL se pose parmi les réalisations horrifiques/gore/comiques des eighties: l’originalité du long-métrage vient sans nul doute de sa thématique dark-fantasy, là où on ne l’attendait pas. En effet, TROLL se lance, classique, nous présentant la famille Potter emménageant dans un immeuble, avec les différents voisins, et ce foutu troll qui possède la gamine: les parents ne captent rien, et on s’attend à ce que Harry Potter Jr -si si!- lutte seul contre le mal. Mais TROLL va dépasser les attentes, avec une infestation parfois très GREMLINS (1984), envahissante. Du conte de fée? Oui, clairement, mais pas du DISNEY pour autant: la dark-fantasy de TROLL s’installe dans ce cadre urbain, grotesque et effrayante plus que jolie et attrayante. Garni d’animatroniques qui font toujours plaisir à voir, TROLL est la ronce d’antan qui crève le béton des murs, et ce grâce à l’anneau mystique de la dite créature, qui prévoit bien sûr d’amener tout son univers de féérie noire en ces lieux... Car oui, c’est dit, ce roi troll est considéré comme “un espèce de fée méchante et très puissante” par Madame St Clair, la vieille dame du dernier étage, aussi étrange que... magique? Si vous n’êtes toujours pas convaincu, sachez que TROLL dispose de morts équivalentes à la saleté d’un STREET TRASH (1987), et que cette “aventure pré-ado” n’en est pas une: on reste fasciné du jusqu’au-boutisme de John Carl Buechler de par son personnage joué par le surempathique Phil Fondacaro, de cette glauque renaissance pourtant méritée... L’acteur nain joue également Torok, ce roi troll qui feuillette tranquillement un playboy en attendant qu’une de ses victimes ne se transforme en cocon -on croirait à une merde, au début, mais non- suintant. Horreur, comédie, dark-fantasy, drame, TROLL finit par convaincre, conte gore pour adultes bien plus fatal que prévu... Sans l’encenser comme d’autres références du genre, on accore à TROLL son importance -et on ne parle pas d’une certaine J.K. Rowling qui aurait allègrement pioché quelques éléments du film, non...- surtout par son originalité, proposant un univers différent et très adulte -pas d’aliens ici- comparé à la concurrence de l’époque. This Scream Factory set is truly something to behold. To say these films hold a special place in my heart is an understatement. It’s difficult to explain exactly why considering they’re gory, grotesque and generally gratuitous in every conceivable way, but over the years, I’ve come to enjoy each of them for what they are. I’m sure I’ve said this before in a post in the past, however, my introduction to this franchise was courtesy of my cousin Matt. During family get-togethers, we’d branch off and he’d tell me all about the series due to the fact my parents didn’t want me watching them. They believed they were trash. It took me until freshmen year of college before I finished watching them all. I remember specifically my mother going to Blockbuster to rent parts VII and VIII as well as Jason Goes to Hell for me to watch as I recovered from getting my wisdom teeth removed.
