This Scream Factory set is truly something to behold. To say these films hold a special place in my heart is an understatement. It’s difficult to explain exactly why considering they’re gory, grotesque and generally gratuitous in every conceivable way, but over the years, I’ve come to enjoy each of them for what they are. I’m sure I’ve said this before in a post in the past, however, my introduction to this franchise was courtesy of my cousin Matt. During family get-togethers, we’d branch off and he’d tell me all about the series due to the fact my parents didn’t want me watching them. They believed they were trash. It took me until freshmen year of college before I finished watching them all. I remember specifically my mother going to Blockbuster to rent parts VII and VIII as well as Jason Goes to Hell for me to watch as I recovered from getting my wisdom teeth removed. Rob Hedden - Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) Probably the worst of the sequels up until now (still have IX and X to watch), this has at least got the merit of deviating the story from the tired summer camp formula. This time we get Jason taking a ride down the river from Crystal Lake to a boat which is going to New York. And so we come to the title. Jason Takes Manhattan is a bit of a misleading title, but Jason Goes Boating seems a bit unthreatening. It would also miss the reference to Leonard Cohen's "First We Take Manhattan"... I certainly hope he next installment is "Jason takes Berlin". The plot itself is ridiculous as ever, this time Jason gets resurrected by a boating accident with an underwater powerline. Then there's an Admiral in charge of what looks like a ferry boat... for some reason, also New York sewers get flooded with toxic waste every night at midnight! I wonder what the cancer rate is in New York, it doesn't seem like a safe thing to do. Worst of all are the makeup effects both in child Jason and grown-up Jason, just really bad stuff. Terrible stuff, which only amuses in completely unintended ways.
