Report: Israeli Artists Censored by Hollywood
The Hollywood Reporter revisited that topic, expanding the focus to show how Israeli artists struggle to get their visions to the screen.
Israeli content creators are increasingly becoming pariahs in the global marketplace.
According to the site, some Jewish artists can’t find funding post Oct. 7. That’s bad enough, but it gets worse.
Israelis have become persona non-grata, particularly on the film festival front — even when their work and social media profiles are apolitical….Israeli filmmakers say their projects are being deliberately excluded on the festival circuit by gatekeepers, some of whom have signaled support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement on social media.
We also hear from “veteran Hollywood dealmaker Craig Emanuel” who said festival programmers (including those from Sundance and the Toronto International Film Festival) fear “pushback and demonstrations” from anti-Israel activists.
That convinced them to avoid Israeli films and filmmakers regardless of the content. Pro-Palestinian protesters helped make this a reality. The Heckler’s Veto is alive and well within the creative community.
Shameful. Cowardly.

How To Blow Up A Pipeline (2022) is a phenomenal film, holy shit. A crew of young environmental activists work to blow up an oil pipeline in West Texas. It intersperses their mission meeting up and building the bomb with the events that led each to believe this was a righteous and necessary stand.
It reminds me a lot of the actions of the Vietnam-era anti-war Catholic left activists like the Berrigan brothers. Hit & Stay (2013) is a great documentary about them. The Trial of the Catonsville Nine (1972) is based on the play that Father Daniel Berrigan wrote about their trial.
So much physical & psychological violence has been done to them by the oil & gas industry. Killing their loved ones, taking + poisoning their land, killing them, destroying their homes & their lives. The tragedy at the heart of it is their actions are as heroic and logical as they are doomed.
I really like that this isn't an action movie about trying to kill "the bad guys." The intent is to not kill anyone, even though that rage is there. Even though the industry is killing them. It hones it into more of a pointed moral dilemma than yet another mindlessly violent American action film.
I also like that it centers the ecological violence done to communities of color the most. The exhausted rage of continuing to struggle against a system that doesn't view them or their ancestors as human. Class is another defining struggle. Economics robbing people of self-determination.
It took such a complex issue with so much nuance and drew so much out of it. In a lot of ways it didn't have answers, but it illuminated so many of the core questions. And asked very earnestly and openly in the face of all this how we SHOULD fight.
It's on Hulu right now, or for rent/purchase various places.

This is a portrait of a Golem that I finished a little while back in June. I find that out of all the Jewish folklore creatures I’ve read about the Golem is the most prevalent and renowned, most notably because of the famous story “The Golem of Prague” which is basically THE Golem story that most of us are aware of, though, there are others. For instance, did you know that there was a Golem of Chelm? It’s true, you can find it online if you wish. And there was also a Golem of Vilna if you can believe it, you can find a translation of that story in the delightful collection “Yiddish Folktales” published by The Pantheon Fairytale and Folklore Library.
But, as I was saying, the Golem is pretty much the most well-known uniquely Jewish folk legend out there, I decided in this piece to make a shout-out to that legacy by using design motifs from possibly the most well-known Golem retelling, the German expressionist film Der Golem: wie er in die Welt kam, while I don’t particularly like how the story was retold in that film, I must say that the design of the scenery and costumes of the characters are simply delightful, I particularly enjoy the set of the Prague Ghetto and the design of the Golem himself. I do quite love German Expressionism and silent films as a whole and Der Golem is certainly a staple of both!
Another part of this Golem’s design is that its tunic is covered with Hebrew/Yiddish letters, this is a direct reference to the Golem’s more symbolic significance as a creature literally brought to life through the language of the Jewish people: that language is a powerful thing, especially to those communities who have consistently been looking down the barrel of cultural-extinction. For a much better explanation of this concept than I could ever write down here, I would like to point you to the YouTube video “The Golem and The Jewish Superhero” by Jewish video essayist Jacob Geller, a truly phenomenal and tremendously emotional look through the history of the Golem tale.
That will be all for today, may you be well, and Good Shabbos and a Shabbat Shalom to you all.

omg omg omg, please please see Blink Twice! it's such a good horror movie and first time director Zoe Kravitz knocks it out of the park. it is such a good metaphor for cycles of abuse and has so many positive jewish vibes. I loved Blink Twice and I can't wait for her next film. she's not just tribe, she's a generational talent! go now! it's so great!
edit: as a commenter pointed out: "Seriously heed the trigger warning for sexual abuse. The movie is well done but profoundly disturbing, especially if you have sexual trauma"

truly nothing is more American than being like "yay I love the Marvel films yay I love the Captain America films" until the Captain America film has an Israeli superhero character who works with the Israeli military. and then we have to boycott it. but before this it was fine to support films about Captain America, an American superhero character who works with the American military!
our wholesome and universal commercialized nationalism vs their sinister child murdering nationalism!!! lmfao
ive made this unrebloggable but just in case someone gets up in my face I will make this crystal clear: I am not telling you to hate Israel less I am TELLING YOU TO HATE AMERICA MORE

“Anglo neighborhoods” tells you everything you need to know. But watch politicians and the media lie and drum up outrage and fear among those who aren’t paying attention!
As a Jew I’m disgusted by so many of those who claim my culture and religion. This is one of many reasons why. All Jews should be outraged by using our houses of worship as cover for the selling of ethnically-cleansed land, in clear violation of US law AND international law, while hurling racist, Islamophobic epithets and physically assaulting people.
ALL SHIT WE MUST STAND AGAINST IF WE’RE UPHOLDING JEWISH VALUES.
Repost from @savannimalz
“Imagine a world where stolen land is sold to create “Anglo Neighborhoods” and people didn’t go out and say that that was wrong.
Imagine a scenario where these absurdly racist and violent threats were met with no challenge. Those brave enough to stand up to all this are on the right side of history.
No amount smearing them will change that.” -@thesamueltaylor

"As a Jew I am aware of how important the existence of Israel is for the survival of us all. And because I am proud of being Jewish, I am worried by the growing anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism in the world."

I know we all will have our own opinions about Chabad, but I just hung up the hebrew calendar they sent to my shul that we received on Rosh Hashanah, and there are gorgeous artworks for each month and it tells you what time to light your candles and it's just really nice to know that even in a place with as small a community as mine, we still are sent these things and we're looked after. I get to look at this calendar and know the world is bigger than I think, that I'm not an island.

Ever wonder what Peter Lorre speaking Hebrew might have sounded like?
youtube
I found this clip through Bluesky (the new Twitter for non-inbreds). Its from an Israeli movie called "the City" (2023). From what I gather, it's a "hip-hop musical" and parody of film noir.
The short guy definitely sounds like he's doing a Peter Lorre impression. And in a trailer with English subtitles, he says this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trailer reveals the actor's name as Idan Alterman, but no cast listing I could find gives any name for his character. Not a bad PL impression though.
Anyway, "the City" is now on my to-see list. I just hope there's a version with English subtitles.

time to do my fav hobby which is correct stephen ambrose (my worst enemy) and consequently band of brothers’ history. this is the joseph liebgott edition (everyone’s fav).
he wasn't actually jewish, he was raised roman catholic and was assumed jewish by the company from his last name. he spoke an austrian dialect of german which was confused with yiddish. he raised his children catholic after the war and he never drove cabs after the war. he was a barber instead. he went missing for three years after the war from a presumed PTSD episode and turned up in california. he never told his 8 children about the war and they only found out after the book was written and through digging through the attic where they found his jump wings. he died in 1992.
