in the silent era of horror, the word "horror" began to be used as a generic signation, and more often instead used was the words "weird" and "mythical and mysterious." this is a time when adaptions were so rapidly made like frankenstein and edgar allan poe's works dominated this era. horror as a genre wasn't specifically "created" or the word wasn't used until dracula in the 1930s.

This gonna sound super petty ill admit but I cannot stand how the golem has become so far removed from its Jewish roots that most people aren't even aware that it originates from Jewish folklore let alone that its biggest purpose was to protect the Jewish people. I can't help but be a petty jew on main when I'm seeing comments on tiktok saying not to "shove Jewish shit in everything" when someone is talking about the history of the golem 🙄🙄🙄
Literally I hate it so much. "Golem" is a Hebrew word. It's a creature created to protect the Jewish people. It's always been Jewish.

Paul Wegener as the Golem, a creature made of clay brought to life based on Jewish folklore.
Wegener, as co-writer, co-director and star, made a trio of Golem films in the silent era: The Golem (1915), The Golem and the Dancing Girl (1917), and The Golem: How He Came Into the World (1920).
The first two films are considered lost. The Golem: How He Came Into the World nowadays is usually referred to as just The Golem.
