I’m rereading the Ascendence series (haven’t gotten the newest books yet) and I forgot how much I love Sage/Jaron in the False Prince. He is literally my favorite character in any of the books I’ve read. Dude is such a menace 😭

Jumping on the Ascendance bandwagon because I remembered I’m actually apart of the fandom. Also, spoilers, duh.
let’s talk about king Eckbert.
I don’t think anyone has really mentioned him, or talked about why he’s such a good character. And now I’m here with the love.
ECKBERT IS JUST AN OLDER JARON!
Think about it. He had sensed danger in the castle, and instead of being a normal person and bringing his son back, he found him, and gave him a rock. And knowing his son so well, he put the idea in his head it was gold. And he knew this would work, because he loved his son. He knew Jaron wouldn’t let anything go once it was in his head. And this little goblin used that. He set it all up just in case he died. And when he did, Jaron had proof he didn’t even know he had.
Not only that, but it was very clear in the books that he loved both his sons dearly. He loved Darius so much, that everyone knew he was his boy. No one ever even questioned where he came from, because Eckbert loved him so much. He wasn’t denied a kingship because he was adopted. He happily accepted a baby into his life and heart.
He also adored his wife, so browny points. Not only that, but like Jaron, he literally dressed up like a peasant and just did his thing? Dude went out to be a little bard man and came back with a wife? How can you not love that?!
Also, what parent wouldn’t yell at their kid for theft or burning a tapestry? I’d be grounding my kids too!
We have a very bias opinion on Eckbert, because Jaron tells it that way. He’s known for grudges, he’s known for shining himself in a brighter light. And he’s known for loving his father despite it all.
Jaron may have had Erin’s eyes, and her big heart. But he is 100% his father’s son, mind and soul.
And if anyone needs any more reasons to love him, I have a whole separate rant I can do.

omg I'm not the only one who does this??
being a writer means being almost 4k into a rewrite of a book you disliked because IT HAD SM POTENTIAL
#literally rewrote 83 pages of The Philosopher's Stone while I had COVID in 2022 to remove the fatphobia#and fix the economic system of the wizarding world#also rewrote chapters from The False Prince (Jennifer A. Neilson) to fix the political system#and ACOTAR to fix the dub!con elements so I'd enjoy it more

How come I can never, and I mean NEVER, fine anyone in the same book Fandom as me. Like, bro. You're telling me you *haven't* read Jennifer Neilson's first YA series? The Traitors Game was sooo good, dare I say close to TFOTA. Don't get me wrong, TFOTA is my favorite series, but this is a close second. More people need to read it.

Hi, and happy STS! (As usual, I am @writeblr-of-my-own, this is my main and apparently I can't switch them).
Everyone of us has recieved the influence of someone or something when we first started writing. That is either because we like someone's techniques and we imitate them to better our own, or we were unintentionally influenced by a piece of media or literature we consumed, even as kids. So, for today's question let's talk inspiration!
What is a piece of media or literature, an author, a concept that inspired you? Do you have a role model that you try to imitate a bit in your works? For example in the way they do descriptions, or in how they create settings!
ooooh neat question!!
I am just gonna answer for my current WIP otherwise I could go on forever...
The False Prince by Jennifer A. Neilson (which I read when I was 11) I think has been the single biggest (unintentional) inspiration for how I write dialogue, first person narration, and humour, particularly for this WIP.
In terms of descriptive writing, my two favourite authors to emulate, in general, are Tolkien (basic, I know) and Scott Lynch (Gentlemen Bastards). What I loved about reading Tolkien was the sense of place; you could find every single scene on a map, and you knew not just that there were mountains in the distance but which mountains from which direction. Lynch does something similar but for time, and with smells and daylight. You know what time of day it is in the city by the hue of the light, how the shadows fall, and the direction the wind blows from; and you can smell the muggy evening marsh wind and the crisp morning ocean breeze.
I also love how Tolkien uses careful word choice in his dialogue to tell you about the characters -- social class, age, race, ethnicity, corruption by the ring -- the simple, archaic feel of his prose, and how he sneakily stuck in many allusions to Shakespeare (mainly King Lear, Hamlet, and Macbeth). My current WIP being accidentally Shakespeare inspired, I figured I would look to Tolkien for some tips (even though my WIP is not fantasy). In terms of dialogue and prose, I noticed Holly Black do a YA twist on those same tricks in tFotA so I have taking inspiration from that series too.

hiii,
okay so this will be series of several asks, because i fear i have a lot to say. Structuring this so that i will send some for my (main) ocs, so 5 of them. and then another one (or more) for general worldbuilding™ Quick name rundown: Vio, Theo, Nate, Momo, Candy. Those are the names i use for them :D
Full Name: Octavio Gavriel Estrada Preferred Name: Octavio, Vio Born: 17/12/1980 Pronouns: he/him (but doesn’t mind they/them) Sexuality: Gay
Bloodstatus: Halfblood Hogwarts House: Hufflepuff
Wand: Hazel wood, phoenix feather core, 11”, reasonably supple flexibility Patronus: Salmon Electives: Care of Magical Creatures, Ancient Runes, Divination
Born in Spain and partially raised there
his mother left the family when he was 4, something Vio never quite forgave her for
moved to the UK because of this, but spends summers with his paternal grandparents in Spain
raised under Jewish beliefs and still holding them close to his heart
oldest sibling for 8 half-siblings & 2 step-brothers
Paternal: Evangelina Maria “Eva” Estrada (6 years younger), Nena Lupita “Nulu” Estrada-Neilson (9 years younger), Neil Marcino “Marci” Estrada-Neilson (9 years younger), Newt Samuel “Sam” Estrada-Neilson (9 years younger) (Nena, Neil & Newt are triplets, Eva and the triplets do not share a mother)
Maternal: Jolene Ilana Atteberry (6 years younger), Blossom Yuval Atteberry (6 years younger), Bonnet Liron Atteberry (8 years younger), Sparrow Ezra Atteberry (10 years younger)
Step Siblings: James Paul Atteberry (2 years younger), Henry Fred Atteberry (3 years younger)
not in contact with his mother’s side of the family (though unfortunately they also attend Hogwarts) and tries very hard to ignore them
plays violin and guitar and enjoys making music as it’s his outlet for everything he keeps buried
Nguyệt ‘Nellie’ Huyền (mother to Eva) died a day after giving birth to her daughter, when talking about his mama Vio is always referring to her
Jennifer Nielson (mother to the triplets) came to the family just before Vio turned 6 and drugged his father on love potions. She would lock Vio up in a very small room (a closet more) without regard for his well being or physical needs. When Vio was 12 when aurors were called to his house by a panicked Theo and Jennifer was tried and jailed. The room she kept him locked in is the shape his boggart takes on
attending Hogwarts early after a letter from Theo (and his grandmother)
extroverted and thriving on others, but also known not to speak about his emotions a lot. It takes a while to get through the mask Vio puts on of easy going friendly face to realise that there is a lot of hurt buried beneath
struggles with food and very easily became a smoker
likes to read and does exceptionally well in his classes, enough so that people ask if he maybe should have been a Ravenclaw instead
his best class is Transfigurations, closely followed by his favourite class Care of Magical Creatures (once allowed to take it)
He and Candy developed a very toxic relationship (not romantic in nature, but close) that fueled the worst part of each other. They both had similar issues (eating disorders/struggles and smoking) and isolated themselves a lot during the height of it, ot daring to speak to others in fear of what someone might do
Full Name: Theodore William Hamson (self picked 🏳️⚧️) Preferred Name: Theo, Theodore Born: 12/05/1980 Pronouns: he/him Sexuality: Aromantic, Pansexual
Bloodstatus: Pureblood Hogwarts House: Gryffindor
Wand: Aspen wood, unicorn hair core, 12”, unbending flexibility Patronus: Squid Electives: Arithmancy, Care of Magical Creatures, Muggle Studies
Born and raised in the UK
Heir to House Hamson (Inheritance through his father) and Digby (Inheritance through his grandmother)
trans (ftm) and living with his grandma, because his parents didn’t agree with that fact. They tried to erase him from the line of succession, but that wasn’t possible as his parents while his parents would have a daughter and a son, said son died when he was 5
Lynne Lillian Hamson (Theo’s grandma) is a fucking icon and we love her, she took her grandson in and would happily take in the rest of his friends if needed too
When Theo got his Hogwarts letter he send back a polite request (it was only partial pleading) that Vio would be accepted into the same year as him and his request (helped immensely by Lynne sending a threatening letter of her own to Dumbledore, he better or else) was accepted
made friends with Theo through school as Lynne wanted her grandson to get some basic education and didn’t see a reason not to sent him to elementary school
Vio is the most important thing for Theo, even before his own life. They are extremely close (to a point of people questioning if they are a couple) and Theo can be a bit possessive of Vio. Finding out his most important person was being hurt for years did not help that
very much an extrovert and friendly with (almost) everyone, a bit of a mother hen at times
wants to be a Healer later, to help others
fascinated by how magic works and with the idea of making new spells
decently average at classes, his best and favourite subject is arithmancy (once allowed), but charms is a very close second for both
it is. very late for me (nearly 4am) so i will send the rest tomorrow, but i hope you enjoy what i have so far (it's a bit barebones still) :D
- 🦆 anon (the gods' eepiest solider)
OMG I LOVE THEM SO MUCH ALREADY???!!!ALSO!!! HAVE A GOOD SLEEP!! IM EXCITED TO HEAR MORE TOMORROW!!!!
