TOM GLYNN-CARNEY PHOTOGRAPHED BY MATTHEW LEIFHEIT FOR VULTURE MAGAZINE.
TALKING ABOUT HIS CHARACTER ARC IN S2.
Aegon is confident, politically savvy, and even affectionate with his children from sister-wife Helaena (Phia Saban).
âShowing that he has the potential to love was interesting to me. I wanted to investigate that.â
Glynn-Carney, who read the book after a season one conversation with Condal and Sapochnik about Aegon's overall arc, praises the development for its shock factor and the attention it gives to Saban, who says it is "sensational in all its forms."
Thereâs something about Aegon in his eyes when he admits: âIâd probably go a little more graphic about the gore. I could have done with, âOh, I canât look at that!â The sadist in me needed it.â
TALKING ABOUT MUSIC.
The playlist he made for Aegon (he makes one for all his characters) helps get him in the right mercurial mind-set, he tells me at Rough Trade.
It includes some contemplative classical and punk rock like the Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, and the Sex Pistols.
âIronically,â he says with a smile. âfuck-the-patriarchy, fuck-the-monarchy stuff.â
In his own life, Glynn-Carney makes âlyrically driven, quite folkyâ music, citing Tame Impala, Bon Iver, and, of course, Garvey as influences.
He grabs a copy of Jeff Buckleyâs Grace because heâs worn down his current edition from listening to it so much. He treats Chet Bakerâs 1959 album Chet gently, like a holy object, when he tells me heâd love to play the cool jazz musician in a biopic one day.
âThere she is,â he says, as if greeting an old friend, when he sees Patti Smithâs Radio Ethiopia.
âAnyone who says they donât like music, you canât trust them. Bodies under the floorboards, isnât it?â he says.
OLIVIA COOKE TALKING ABOUT TOM GLYNN-CARNEY'S ACTING STYLE.
His acting style is instinctual, a function of his theater training that feels particularly well suited to Aegonâs own impulsiveness.
When filming their first scene on the show together, Glynn-Carney encouraged Cooke to actually slap him in the face:
âThe first go, I did it really haphazardly. I only caught his chin with my fingertips, because I was too nervous. And he was like, âNo, Olivia, just, like, really go for it. Just really go for it.â
âI went for it, and the ringing sound that came from the slap reverberated all through the Red Keep. Tears are springing to his eyes and his chin is wobbling.â
SPOILERS!! S2.
OLIVIA COOKE TALKING ABOUT A SCENE OF AEGON AND ALICENT IN S2.
In a scene they share in season two during which Aegon grieves the loss of a relative:
âHe was throwing himself around the room in just the throes of despair. It sort of took me out of the scene a bit. I was like, Bloody hell, Tomâs doing well.â
ABOUT THE PERSONALITY OF KING AEGON II.
âmassively bipolar.â
That emotional volatility, fueled by shame, guilt, and an obsessive need to prove himself, becomes a major driver of this seasonâs increasing bloodshed and brutality.
âAegon wants to be loved and feared at the same time. But I think itâs a dangerous cycle.â
âWeâre not going to get to the core of whatâs going on. Weâre just going to go round and round and round and round and round until everything burns and everyoneâs dead."
ABOUT HIS SCENES WITH RHYS IFANS IN S2.
One of his favorite days on set this season reminded him of the live energy of performing onstage.
They were shooting episode two, when Aegon challenges his grandfather Ottoâs decisions and remains steely and resolute in response to Ottoâs insults:
âIâve always wanted to do a play with Rhys, and that felt like the closest thing Iâll get to it for a while.â
âIt was an empty set, a big room, like a stage. We were allowed complete free rein of the space.â
TALKING ABOUT HIS FAMILY.
He came from a creatively inclined family: His paternal grandparents were an opera singer and a choirmaster, and his mother sewed all the costumes for his sisterâs ballroom and Latin dance competitions.
They were supportive of his acting dreams, he says, but urged a plan B â a suggestion he rejected:
âI remember being so precocious and being like, âIf I have a plan B, Iâm preemptively failing it.â My mom probably thought, Little dickhead.â
âI always had my eyes on the prize, and sometimes youâve just got to be like that, havenât you?.â

Quote
Amazon is also integrated into the Democratic party itself. Senator Chuck Schumerâs daughter works for Amazon, so did former Obama spokesperson Jay Carney, as does Kamala Harrisâ close advisor Karen Dunn. Bezos himself gave $100 million apiece to Democratic validators Van Jones and Chef Jose Andre, purely as gifts. He also donated $100 million to Barack Obamaâs Presidential library. Much of the social issue-oriented infrastructure of the party, the so-called âwokeâ faction, is financed by corporate money from dominant firms. Powerful Democratic insiders like former Clinton administration official Jamie Gorelick are on the board of Amazon. Gorelick is a partner at Wilmer Hale, and when Merrick Garland was nominated to become Attorney General, she put up a note on her firm biography about how close she is with him, going all the way back to undergraduate days at Harvard.

Lon Chaney Jr. is the title character in Indestructible Man (1956), not to be confused with Man Made Monster (1941), The Magnetic Monster (1952), or even The Alligator People (1959). But that poster is so confusing! Despite not having many lines, Chaney still emotes the hell out of his role as âButcherâ Benton. To top it off, heâs supported by many of the usual excellent character actors. And even though the script is all chopped up, it all makes sense⊠sort of.
At the time of this writing, Indestructible Man (1956) is available to stream from the Classic Horror Movie Channel, Wicked Horror TV, Hoopla, Tubi, Pluto TV, Screambox, Amazon Prime, and MGM+.

Books I Read in 2023
* = Re-read
Check out past years: 2012, 2013 (skipped), 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018,  2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. Follow me on Goodreads to get these reviews as they happen. 1) A Book of Blades: Rogues in the House Presents edited by L.D. Whitney This book, assembled by the great guys behind the premier podcast in the genre, is an excellent way to sample a breadth of contemporary Sword & Sorcery fiction! My favorite story was "The Blood of Old Shard" by John R. Fultz, with Scott Oden and Howard Andrew Jones' tales close behind, and there were no duds in the mix. "The Blood..." really surprised me with a heart and inventiveness which the opening doesn't give away yet, you realize upon finishing, deftly sets up. 2) Fires of Azeroth by C.J. Cherryh Left my big olâ spoiler-laden review on Goodreads for ya. 3) Black Paper: Writing in a Dark Time by Teju Cole 4) The Citadel of Forgotten Myths by Michael Moorcock *5) Neuromancer by William Gibson 6) The Expert System's Brother by Adrian Tchaikovsky 7) The Expert Systemâs Champion by Adrian Tchaikovsky I confess I finished the first book in this series having enjoyed myself, but wondering if I'd remember what I'd read a year from now. I don't have that concern with its follow-up. Tchaikovsky has enriched the world he set up in the first installment quite nicely, and I hope I get to explore it further in a third. 8) Old Moon Quarterly: Issue 3 9) Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner 10) The Gurkha and the Lord of Tuesday by Saad Z. Hossain 11) The Dreamthief's Daughter: A Tale of the Albino by Michael Moorcock 12) Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino Do you think youâd enjoy hearing Tarantino discuss mainly his childhood and adolescence re: movies that meant a lot to him during that period? Congrats, this is extremely that. It could not be more that. 13) The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe 14) Consider This: Moments in My Writing Life After Which Everything Was Different by Chuck Palahniuk Roughly 70/30 instructional / biographical. Has a lot of good advice, focusing on a more literary mode than classic genre stylings, all in a voice and coming from a place any Palahniuk fan will be familiar with (I would have been stunned NOT to find something like the "Voice of Authority" snippet in a writing book by Palahniuk). Entertaining and providing what mostly felt like useful, actionable advice, I'd say it can be handy for writers who aren't knowledgeable of the author's works, but knowing at least a couple of his books can help contextualize his advice so you can determine which parts are right for you or not. 15) Death Angel's Shadow by Karl Edward Wagner 16) Night Winds by Karl Edward Wagner 17) Wyngraf Issue #1 Edited by Nathaniel Webb 18) Rakefire and Other Stories by Jason Ray Carney 19) The White Lion by Scott Oden 20) Werner's Nomenclature of Colours: Adapted to Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Anatomy, and the Arts by Patrick Syme, Abraham Gottlob Werner (Illustrator) 21) Tehanu by Ursula K. Le Guin 22) Lord of a Shattered Land by Howard Andrew Jones *23) Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer 24) Authority by Jeff VanderMeer 25) Acceptance by Jeff VanderMeer *26) The Sailor on the Seas of Fate by Michael Moorcock 27) Kundo Wakes Up by Saad Z. Flora and Son Review: A Heartfelt Melody of Connection
John Carney, the director renowned for his ability to capture the essence of music and the human experience, returns to the screen with Flora and Son, his first film since the critically acclaimed Sing Street (2016). While it may not quite reach the heights of its predecessor, Flora and Son is a touching and resonant exploration of family bonds, redemption, and the transformative power of music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beNTTHnMIy8 The Good: Set against the backdrop of Dublin's streets, Flora and Son tells the story of Flora (Eve Hewson), a resilient single mother, and her troubled teenage son Max (OrĂ©n Kinlan), a rebellious petty thief. The film takes its time immersing us in their tumultuous relationship, showcasing Carney's talent for portraying the nuances of human connections. Flora's journey begins when the GardaĂ, Dublin's police force, suggests she find a hobby for Max to keep him out of trouble. Her determination to mend their fractured relationship leads her to rescue an old, discarded guitar from a skip. It's through this seemingly insignificant act that the film's heart begins to beat. Eve Hewson's portrayal of Flora is nothing short of outstanding. She brings depth and authenticity to her character, portraying a woman who carries the weight of her past mistakes and her son's troubled present on her shoulders. Flora's journey from a struggling mother to a determined guitar enthusiast is a testament to Hewson's talent. She captures Flora's vulnerability, resilience, and unwavering love for her son in a way that resonates deeply with the audience. OrĂ©n Kinlan's Max is equally compelling. His transformation from a delinquent teenager to a young man seeking redemption is portrayed with raw intensity. Kinlan skillfully conveys Max's inner turmoil, making the audience empathize with a character who is far from perfect but desperately trying to find his place in the world. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's presence as Jeff, the Los Angeles-based online guitar teacher, adds an intriguing dynamic to the film. While his role is somewhat limited in screen time, Gordon-Levitt's charm and charisma shine through. Jeff's virtual presence becomes a source of guidance and inspiration for both Flora and Max, illustrating the film's theme that connections can be formed across geographical and generational divides through a shared passion for music. Jack Reynor delivers a noteworthy performance as Ian, Flora's supportive friend and love interest. His character provides a sense of stability and emotional support to Flora and Max, serving as a bridge between their fractured relationship. Reynor's on-screen chemistry with Hewson is palpable, adding depth to the film's emotional layers. The film's greatest strength lies in its ability to convey the redemptive power of music. Carney's direction showcases his affinity for using music as a character in itself. The guitar, a seemingly insignificant object, becomes a catalyst for transformation, a symbol of hope, and a means of communication between characters who struggle to express their feelings through words. The soundtrack, featuring original songs by Carney, is a melodic tapestry that weaves itself seamlessly into the narrative. Each chord strummed and note played adds emotional depth to the characters and their journeys. Songs like "Dublin 07" and "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" are especially poignant, underscoring the film's central themes. Carney's signature style of capturing spontaneous and intimate moments is evident throughout the film. The handheld camera work and naturalistic lighting lend an authentic and relatable quality to the storytelling. The director's choice to shoot on location in Dublin's streets and neighborhoods adds a layer of authenticity to the film's backdrop. The Bad: However, Flora and Son is not without its shortcomings. While the film excels in character development and emotional resonance, its pacing can be uneven at times. Some scenes linger longer than necessary, while others feel rushed, potentially detracting from the overall impact of the story. Additionally, the film's climax, while emotionally charged, might come across as somewhat predictable to viewers familiar with Carney's previous works. While it tugs at the heartstrings effectively, it lacks the element of surprise that made Once (2007) and Sing Street memorable. Overall: Flora and Son may not surpass the brilliance of Sing Street, but it stands as a commendable addition to John Carney's repertoire. With its powerful performances, a compelling exploration of familial bonds, and a profound celebration of the transformative power of music, the film leaves a lasting impression. Eve Hewson and OrĂ©n Kinlan's exceptional performances anchor the story, while Carney's keen sense of music and emotion infuse it with heart. While it may not reach the pinnacle of Carney's previous works, Flora and Son is a touching and in-depth exploration of the human spirit's capacity for redemption and connection through the universal language of music.
