Dp x Dc AU: Jason and Jazz have been dating for a while and... Danny presumes that because he knows about Jason being Red Hood that Jason knows about Phantom.
Danny got a text randomly in the afternoon from Jazz’s boyfriend. Which was inherently a strange experience considering Jason was typically dead asleep in the afternoon from all his ‘evening shifts’ and Jazz was in class. Stranger, the message just asked if Danny would be free to meet up today for a short chat. Jason doesn’t reply to Danny’s response of “Anything for my sister’s BOO <3.”
Normally, Jason would start launching into a rant about Danny’s coffee choice being too like his little brother’s when they met at cafes- right now Jason looks deadly serious.
“Look. I’ll cut to the chase of it all. I want to ask Jazz to marry me and well, your folks are shitty but it feels weird to not ask for permission.”
“...Okay?”
“So do I have permission?” Jason asks, a bit of a glare and Danny can see the RedHood’s famous attitude peeking out with the abundance of anxiety Jason must be feeling.
“I mean, Yeah! She loves you and I know she’s been subliminally messaging you to find your balls and ask her already.” Danny rolls his eyes and laughs. His brother-in-law to be sure was a strange guy, but he liked him all the more because of it.
Jason sighs in relief and his normal literature nerd, easy going and plucky ‘cool guy’ attitude comes back. They start chatting about the ring he bought for her, how they’re probably going to have to do a small wedding with his family members to appease his grandpa figure. Its all very cute and optimistic.
“Love it! She mentioned your grandpa’s rose garden before and that’ll be perfect for human family events before the big ceremony.”
“Big Ceremony?” Jason sounds unsure of where the conversation is going.
“Yeah, you know. Plus now that I’m thinking about it, it’s probably for the best that you asked me, the observants would totally turn this into like, an interdimensional faux pa or something if I don’t give them a heads up.” Danny laughs at the idea of it causing an incident, but he can see Jason straighten his shoulders and his eyes attempt to pierce through him.
“Danny. What the fuck are you talking about?” Jason looks more pissed than he looks concerned, and Danny is just confused.
“Cause... You Know.”
“If you don’t give me a real answer I’m going to-” At least Jason was taking deep breaths.
“Hey man, chill out! I guess Jazz keeps it on the DL but my night shift has-”
“Night shift? You’re an engineer.” Jason cuts him off and the fact sounds accusatory.
“And I’m the Ghost King? You knew this?” Danny relents, he hated saying it out loud cause it sounded lame, but he’s not sure why Jason is so up in arms all of a sudden. Jason looked like he might have an aneurysm and Danny knows his expression is declaring Jason is the biggest Dumbass in the world.
“Danny ...what the fuck are you trying to say to me right now?”
“That you and Jazz have to have a royal wedding in the Infinite Realms or my counsel and advisors will throw an absolute fit.”
Jason doesn’t reply so Danny decides to add “You know, ‘cause my title translates to the Family’s royal lineage and if you marry Jazz you’ll become a Prince. I guess you don’t technically have to have a big wedding but if you don’t it’ll just mean shit loads of paperwork and a huge fucking headache on my end. Which I can survive but... I’m sensing that you’re frustrated. Let’s call Jazz.”
“Let’s do that.” Jason sounds like he’s being strangled. Danny thinks it’s a bit dramatic but is excited to help Jazz wedding plan.

Like the Beat of a Drum pt 1
It began when Tim’s soulmark came in- fourteen years later than most children. He didn’t tell his parents, already well aware of what they thought of his late/non-existent soulmark.
He knew what society thought of people who were more than ten years older than their soulmate, and he didn’t want to be labeled a cradle-robber, so he discretely bought a patch to cover it with. Being markless was also helpful for being Robin- nothing to identify him by or to threaten his soulmate with.
Bruce said that having a soulmate was fine, as long as nobody ever saw your mark- even Tim hadn’t seen Bruce’s mark, though he knew where it was.
Tim didn’t know if he wanted a soulmate, but he was the first (and only) to admit that he couldn’t wait to meet this “Daniel Fenton”.
What he wouldn’t admit to anyone is that sometimes, when he was feeling particularly lonely, he could hear a heartbeat other than his own, pulsing from the mark just over his sternum. People would think he was crazy, and that was something he couldn’t afford on top of being labeled markless.
Nobody could know that Tim had a soulmate. He almost pitied the kid who got stuck with him.
~~~
Danny hadn’t had a soulmate before he died. He’d never heard a heartbeat that was a perfect harmony to his own, even when he listened hard.
After he’d died, the heartbeat he began to hear was always loud in his ears, and he had a smudged bit of writing on his hip. When he’d gone to Frostbite about the weird new mark, the yeti explained that other universes had soulmates, and their marks might be different from his own universe.
“You’ll find the right one someday, and then your mark will become clear.”
Sometimes Danny tried to imagine what his soulmate would look like. Would they be fine with him being a ghost? Would they treat him like the rest of the world did, with disgust and revulsion and distrust?
Surely not. Soulmate implied that they would be perfect counterpoints to each other. He assumed that meant they would get along.
The mark was always clearer when he was Phantom. Sometimes he imagined it cleared up a little as Danny depending on the choices he made, but he wasn’t sure about that- it’s not like he’d told anyone that he had a weird new tattoo, and it was in an odd place to look at.
He often found himself floating and looking up at the stars on quiet nights, day-dreaming about having someone perfect for him and him alone.
~~~
Tim grit his teeth and kept moving, trying to ignore the stabbing pain in his chest as he fought. He knew he hadn’t been stabbed- that felt different. Clearly, his soulmate was in some kind of trouble.
It’s not like he could do anything for them- he was currently fighting some ninja-cultist-assassin weirdos with Jason.
“We will raise the Ghost King and he shall bring fire upon the world!”
Dick had already swooped in and saved the little girl they were trying to use as a sacrifice, but something had triggered the summoning circle anyways after Tim had tried to mess up one of the lines. It was bubbling neon green, and Tim couldn’t decide if it looked more like the Lazarus pits or more like highlighter ink.
His second heartbeat pounded, a loud drum beneath his hidden soulmark, a soulmark that had been sore for days.
He had worried, of course, that someone was in danger and he couldn’t save them- especially as the fight started and the pain became worse.
To his relief, after the sigil started bubbling, the pain receded, as did the noise, and he could think about other things. Such as the so-called ‘Ghost King’.
With a rumble and a crack like thunder, the green pit spit out a slight figure that hung in midair for a moment, before dropping like a rock onto the place where the pit had been moments before.
Tim knocked out the last cultist and turned to face the new threat, but was instead greeted with a young man with floating white hair, curled up on his side, green blood oozing rapidly from… All of him.
What the hell?
~~~
Danny woke up slowly, feeling all sorts of sluggish. The ectoplasm in the air was thick, so he must be in one of two places- Amity, or the Infinite Realms.
The lack of restraints around his wrists and ankles made him think it was the Realms, but when he pried open his eyes, he was shocked to find himself somewhere altogether unfamiliar.
It was a medbay, of sorts- that he could tell, but from the glass wall he could see a vast cavern, filled with various bits and bobs. He could hear bats distantly chirping above him.
Before moving more than his head, Danny took stock of his situation. He did feel weighed down, yes, but it felt more like blood loss than anything else. There were bandages across his chest, and the heart monitor was letting out a long beep, as if warning everyone in the vicinity that the patient was dead.
Something heavy was taped to his hip, over his soulmark. He winced at the thought- Jack and Maddie had attacked that area with a single-minded intensity, thinking it was the thing that caused him to ‘possess their baby’.
Probably another bandage, but who would go through the trouble of wrapping him up? No one in Amity would, at least, nobody who had the kind of tech he could see. Vlad would just find a way to manipulate him because of his pain, not patch up his wounds.
The last thing he remembered before losing consciousness was a tugging at his core, pulling him away from the Fenton lab and into a world of green before that world went black.
“You’re awake.”
Startled from his thoughts, Danny looked to the door to see a young man in primary colors and a domino mask. The stranger tilted his head.
“Can you understand me?”
Danny tried to answer, but all that would come out of his dry mouth was a rasp, so he settled on a nod.
The stranger came closer, bringing with him a glass of water that he held to Danny’s lips.
Suspiciously, Danny took a sip, but all he could taste was clean water, so he drank slowly until the stranger pulled the glass away.
“Wh-where am I?”
“Gotham City, New Jersey.”
Now, Danny hadn’t ever been stellar at Geography, but he was pretty sure he’d never heard of a city called Gotham. Part of him thought that it would be just the right place for Sam to live- Goth-am.
“Would you be up to answering a few questions?”
The stranger was looking at him expectantly, so Danny nodded. Maybe he’d get information if he gave some.
“Wonderful. Do you have a name?”
“Phantom.”
The stranger typed something out into a computer Danny hadn’t noticed before.
“Thank you. Where are you from?”
~~~
“Illinois.”
Tim hadn’t been expecting such a mundane answer from the odd person in the Batcave medbay, but he was well aware that metas came from all over the world, even if they got spit out by Lazarus portals.
“Do you know how you got here?”
Phantom shook his head.
“I was- in the lab, and then everything was green. I passed out pretty fast after that.”
Now, the bats might be emotionally stunted, but Tim was the greatest detective that ever lived, so analytically he was fine. ‘In the lab’ plus the wounds the meta was sporting? That told a disastrous story.
“Can you tell me if anyone else was in the lab with you?”
Phantom paused for a long time.
“I just want to help, Phantom. There might be other metas in danger there.”
“Meta?”
Tim hadn’t expected Phantom to not know what a meta was- that painted an even worse picture than he thought.
He made sure his voice was kind and even when he answered.
“Powered individuals with the meta gene. I haven’t run your DNA yet, I was waiting for you to wake up for permission, but I’m sure you have the gene. There are protective acts in place to stop the abuse of powered individuals- we want to help.”
Much to his surprise, after gaping through his explanation, Phantom laughed!
“No! I’m not- no- my condition- it’s medical, not genetic.”
Tim winced. This poor guy, he’d been brainwashed.
“There wasn’t anyone else in the lab. I saved the rest of us before getting caught.”
Phantom’s tone was airy, but Tim could hear an underlying strength to it.
“What am I supposed to call you, by the way?”
~~~
Danny watched as the stranger went through several stages of grief at his question, and wondered how in the world it had been an odd query.
“I’m- Red Robin. Of the Gotham Bats.”
Oh. That’s why. Danny nodded sagely.
“Sports, I see. Which one requires masks? Cribbage?”
Ope, there went several more stages of grief, perhaps even some as of yet unknown to man.
“No. The Bats are vigilantes. We work with the Justice League, a group of superheroes in charge of world safety.”
Look. Danny might live under a proverbial rock in Amity Park, but superheroes? Never heard of ‘em. Point one to being a different universe.
Well. Point several, he just couldn’t remember the others. Wait a second-
“Are soulmarks a thing here?”
“What? Yes, why?”
Danny shot up, despite the pain in his chest and side and- everywhere.
“Can you show me a soulmark? Do you have one?”
Red Robin’s face shuttered behind the mask, and the heartbeat in Danny’s ears sped up a little.
“I do not.”
“Oh. Sorry. I just- Sorry.”
There was a noise from outside of the medical area, and then a voice called out.
“Red Robin? Is our guest awake? I brought a representative from the JLD.”
The vigilante got up and went out quickly, and Danny felt really bad for hurting him. For a few minutes he was left alone, so he lay back down and stared at the wall.
And then. And. Then.
“YOU!”
Danny shot up into a sitting position again, pointing at the man in the trench coat who came into the room.
Trench coat man looked confused.
Not caring for his stitches or monitors or anything like that, Danny struggled onto his feet, forgetting the pain in his anger.
“Do you, John Constantine, know how much of a pain in my ass you are?” He sneered and let his voice take on a nasally tone. “’Oh Great One, Phantom, lord of the realms and all that shit! John Constantine sold his soul to me, but he sold it to my cousin too! Who gets the soul now?’”
Danny ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
“You know who gets his soul now, Constantine? I fucking do! I-“ He flagged- maybe he shouldn’t air out this guy’s dirty laundry in front of strangers? “Anyways, fuck you, dude. Find a way to get me home and never fucking sell your soul again.”
~~~
Tim was honestly shocked that Phantom had been able to move in the state he was in, even with what Tim suspected was accelerated healing.
His extra heartbeat had started pounding a mile a minute the moment Phantom saw Constantine, but Tim ignored it for now, instead focusing on their guest.
When Phantom mentioned being sent home, Tim had to step in.
“I don’t believe that is wise, Phantom. You came to us severely injured. My conscious would not let me send you away without-“
Constantine was backing away from Phantom, so fast that he ran into Dick standing at the door.
“Nope. Not dealing with that. No offense, King Phantom, but you’re above my paygrade.”
Phantom (king?) stood still for a moment, looking lost, but then he drew himself up.
“John Constantine, I am your paygrade. Send me where I’m supposed to be.”
Tim watched curiously as Constantine winced.
“That’s some. Pretty vague wording there, your royalness. That is a spell, that I can cast, but whether it does anything or not?” He shrugged. “Can’t tell.”
Phantom slumped, and then waved a limp hand at Constantine.
“Yeah, I didn’t figure. Sorry I yelled at you. I’ll try not to lord the whole ‘I own your soul’ over you too much. Can you at least get me back to the Realms?”
“It might take me a while. What will you do in the meantime?”
Sighing, Phantom made his way back to the med cot, sitting on the edge gingerly.
“Heal the rest of the way. Haunt an abandoned building. Do whatever the hell ghosts do in this dimension.”
“Ghosts?”
Dick spoke up, and Tim could tell his brother was a little shell-shocked.
Phantom winced.
“I mean, as long as ghosts aren’t like, science experiments in this one. Been there, done that. Not fun.”
Constantine shrugged.
“There aren’t a lot of you running around, you should be fine.” He turned to Tim and Dick. “Bats, don’t cause an interdimensional incident. Phantom may be a good king, but he’s still a king.”
“Only on days that end in y.”
With another shrug, John disappeared in a swirl of tan trench coat.
Tim looked to Phantom, who was scowling at the place that Constantine vanished from.
“Well, your majesty, can we offer you any assistance?”
~~~
With a groan, Danny stood back up off the bed.
“No- I think I’m healed enough to get out of your hair by now. Uh. Thank you for your hospitality and all, but I should be… Trying to find a way home.”
“Whoever is back where you came from wants to hurt you, Phantom.”
Danny wasn’t sure why Red Robin seemed to care so much. Sure, he had pretty much decided that if anything happened to Red Robin he’d ice everyone in the vicinity and then finish the job on himself, but that was just him. He was pretty sure everyone imprinted on the first person they saw in a new reality.
Right?
“There are people I have to protect.”
He had to keep himself from wincing at the half-truth. He’d ordered the ghosts to stay away from Amity Park right before Jack and Maddie had captured him, so they were fine, but he had to protect Jazz and Sam and Tucker from finding out that the Fentons were so awful as to attack their son.
“You have to protect yourself first.”
The other man had stepped into the room.
“You’ve obviously been through something hard, Phantom. Take a break. We can find a safe house for you to stay in until you are feeling better. I’m Nightwing, by the way.”
Danny nodded to Nightwing, and then looked expectantly at Red Robin, who was tapping away at his wrist computer.
“Collectively, the only one of us with a suitable safe house is Red Hood. His have great security systems, but aren’t connected to the bats main computer network in any way.”
He looked up from his computer with a smile.
“Ready to meet a zombie, Mister Ghost King?”
DPxDC Danny and Jason Prompt
Phantom and Robin knew each other in the Infinite Realms. A newly dead Robin had helped the young Ghost King in a fight when a group of ghosts had tried to kill him. (Danny hadn’t done anything wrong in their eyes per se, they just wanted a fully dead king so they tried to beat him up enough for him to switch back so they could kill him.) Robin had jumped in to help, and the two 15 year olds had become fast friends.
For the 6 months that Jason was dead, the two explored the realms. Danny was often gone living his life, but when he had the time the two would explore the realms together. But eventually, in the middle of a conversation, Jason vanished, having been resurrected.
Being king, Danny sensed it and shrugged. They had barely told each other anything about their personal lives but Jason knew that Danny Phantom was a half a who protected a small town in the middle of nowhere that was shielded from the outside world by a curse and Danny knew that Jason was a superhero named Robin, sidekick of another hero called Batman, and worked in a big city called Gotham. (Dealer’s choice if Lady Gotham occasionally joined the two for tea during this time or if she doesn’t exist.)
The next five years, the two have no contact. They’re off doing their own thing. But then the GIW captures Danny and, being government, takes him to their main base in DC. They get him there, and begin vivisecting him.
The vivisection is interrupted by the Fentons breaking down the door, insisting that their little boy be given back (he was taken as a human after a transformation back after a rough fight happened in front of the GIW agents). When they see Phantom, though, they drop their weapons and ask to join the vivisection, even if only as observers. “If we can watch the vivisection, and you hand us back our son safe and sound afterwards, we’ll pretend this never happened,” they say. The GIW sees their chance and agrees, fully intending to break the deal. The vivisection continues.
But because two heavily armed crazy people broke into a government base, someone’s noticed. Wonder Woman saw the pair enter the building from the sky and asked Batman to research the place. He comes back a few hours later with horrifying results about who the organization is and what they’re up to. Wonder Woman starts tearing the place down with her bare hands.
In the chaos and confusion, the GIW agents and the Fentons go off to stop what they assume is an evil ghost. Danny takes the chance and, with a whole lot of effort and a little luck that the GIW was stupid enough to leave a “free the guy on the table” button in the room, he escapes. (Tiny balls of ice flicked at a button at a high velocity are apparently enough to press it. It just took him a minute to be accurate, especially since his powers were barely working at all.)
With nowhere to go, Danny decides to run to the only place besides Amity that he’s ever heard of.
Gotham City.
Holding his insides together with his hands, Danny flies out of the building and manages to find a map (probably from a friendly tourist that’s too used to seeing weird shit bc it’s the DC universe) that tells him where he is and how to get to Gotham. He reaches it in an hour. And promptly collapses on a rooftop. Turns out, flying hundreds of miles immediately after a vivisection while holding your insides together is exhausting.
He’s laying there when a few Bat people come upon him. They start panicking; who’s the glowing dude holding his insides together with his arms while passed out on a rooftop?
Moments later, more batfamily members join them. All are confused, until Red Hood grapples in, takes one look at the guy on the ground, and says “Phantom?”
Everyone looks at Jason, but he’s staring at the guy on the ground. He rushes forward and his knees buckle as he kneels next to Phantom. “Phantom!” Jason exclaims, giving him the gentlest of shakes so as not to disturb his injuries while still waking him up.
Phantom cracks an eye open. He sees the man in front of him and, despite the very different outfit and the face-covering helmet, whispers “Robin?”
From here, the fic goes into Danny healing from his wounds, Jason and Danny revealing how they know each other, Jason and Danny freaking out the Justice League because they straight up didn’t tell anyone that Danny’s the ghost king but Constantine recognizes the king and has a mental breakdown about it, and maybe even some Jason/Danny slowburn!
A deal with the Ghost King
First previous next AO3
Duke wasn't sure what was going on. He was about to head back home when he got an message from Dick, calling him to the theathre district. It didn't sound serious, but when Duke found almost the entire family on the roof he grew concerned. 'Hey guys, I'm here. What's going on?' Damian scoffed. 'Dick is being foolish. This is a complete waste of time.' 'Says the one that's been hogging the binoculers, gimme those!' Tim grabbed for the binoculers, making Damian fight for them. Duke was a bit confused. 'Do you guys want to tell me what's going on, or can I head home? Some of us sleep at night, you know.' Cass appeared behind him, startling him: 'Jason's dating.' 'Wait, really? Who?' Duke joined Dick and Stephanie by the roof's edge, hoping to catch a glimpse. He might not talk much with Jason, but he was still curious who would try and date Mr. Dufflebag. Some type of femme fatale maybe? Or maybe someone who was strong? He couldn't imagine someone waltzing up and just asking Jason out. He was very suprised when Jason left the theatre with some twinkish guy.
'So, what did you think? The main actrice really put her everything into her peformance!' Jason had taken Phantom to the theatre after lunch to see a play. 'I loved it! I never liked the book, but this was much better!' Danny had a good time, he had been pleasantly suprised. Jason was suprised. 'Wait, you don't like the book? You could've told me, so we could have gone to a different one.' Danny waved him off. 'It's fine, I didn't want to be rude. Last time I dragged you al across the Astronomy museum, remember? You didn't whine either. Besides, I liked it! Guess reading the book for a grade wasn't helping me enjoy it.' Jadon groaned. 'Reading for a grade. Nothing kills love for books faster!' Danny laughed, admitting one of his rogues was more likely to blame. 'Remind me to tell you about Ghostwriter, now THAT kills love for books!' Jason smiled, and kissed Danny. Suddenly he noticed something above them. It almost looked like... 'Is something wrong?' Danny noticed Jason grew alert. 'Nah, It's nothing. I just noticed the sun had gone down. I... wanted to watch the sunset with you.' Danny smiled at Jason. 'Just like in the play, huh? Never thought the Red Hood was such a romantic!' Jsson grew a bit embarrassed. 'I have an idea!' Danny grabs Jason's hand and pulls him into an alley.
Dick was confused. How could they have lost them! This alley was a dead end, and the whole family (minus Bruce) was here! Damian was pouting. 'If I had been in charge of this operation we wouldn't have lost them!' Duke didn't know how Jason had done this. One second they were here, and gone the next. Even his vision couln't expkain it. Tim, Cass and Stephanie were searching for secret escape routes. It wasn't like they had flown away!
Meanwhile, high above them Danny and Jason flew invisibly, enjoying their own second sunset.
Note
I know in your Red Knight AU, Jason when on the rampage in another realm, after finding out that Batman replace him with another Robin.
Did Danny manage to be there for him during that time?
He did! Danny was always there for Jason. He actually wanted to chase after Jason immediately, but luckily, the first thing he did was panic call Jazz, absolutely out of his mind. Jazz promptly told Danny to let Jason have some space for a little bit to process.
Which was for the best, really. Jason needed to not feel like he was trapped and that he could be angry. He never really got that before. But the most important thing is Danny came after him and brought him home. Jason needed to feel like he could be angry, but also, like his anger wouldn't mean he'd be punished or abandoned. It was a very delicate time for him, but Danny, Jazz, Sam, Tucker, and all our favorite ghosts made sure Jason knew he was very much wanted still. And that he was utterly irreplaceable.
Skulker handled this by breaking all of his weapons and suits overnight and saying he didn't know how to fix them. (Jason very much knew what he was doing, but the time spent on fixing things helped ground him)
Ember handled this by announcing that she couldn't possibly ever sing ever again unless her only other band member was there (Still very obvious, but music time with Ember usually devolved into very necessary crying time. A lot of ice cream was consumed)
Johnny and Kitty handled this by getting into a MASSIVE fight and refusing to speak to each other unless Jason mediated. (This actually was far less obvious, as the two tend to get into fights often. No one is actually certain if the fight was fake or not to this day, but they also haven't broken up once since and Jason is incredibly proud of that)
Fright Knight handled this by.... well, actually, he took the blunt approach and told Jason there was no one in any realm dead or alive he'd ever consider worthy to be his apprentice besides Jason. (This was highly effective as Frighty has always been bluntly honest with Jason. He didn't wholly believe it but it was a comfort. Frighty then beat his ass in a spar and he didn't think of much else)
Basically, everyone was there for Jason. Not just Danny. Jason was made to feel like his anger and hurt were valid, because they were. But he was also not just told, but shown how precious he was to every life he touched. He didn't get it, not at first and he struggled to really believe it.
It wasn't until later, after Danny opened up more about his own trauma and the effects it had on him that Jason actually began to somewhat understand more of what Jazz meant when she said Danny was getting better. He pieced more of the story together from the others to paint a better picture, and that's when it clicked for him. As much as he needed Danny, Danny had needed him just as much. (Clockwork may have had a hand in this as well, but whatever those two talked about, no one will ever know)
Also, as an aside, once everything calmed down, Danny was very pleased to learn the rebelling realm was now back under control and quite terrified of the Ghost King and his Knight. It saved him so much paperwork.
So yeah, this was a bit all over the place, but hopefully, it answers your question. Team Phantom and the ghosts are basically a very large family, and they might fight and bicker, but they seriously pull through and muster together if anyone is hurting. They're a bit clumsy sometimes with it, but the love they all feel is very obvious. I really, really wanted to give Jason a much more healthy origin story into becoming Red Hood than he got in canon. The poor boy went through enough. It was past time for him to get to heal.
Jason still has some hangups. His abandonment issues are still there, and his fear of rejection. But it's not as bad as it was, and because he'd been allowed to express his anger without being punished(or enabled, anger is a fine emotion to feel. But you should never let it consume you) for it, he figured out how to manage it.
He might still slip now, and then, he has trauma, and that won't go away. But Danny will never, ever let him fall. Neither will the rest of the weird little eclectic family they've built.
Chapter Notes: title from Harder to Breathe by Letdown. Links: AO3 // Chapter 1 // Chapter 9 // Chapter 11 // Spotify
Danny was at a bit of a loss. Red had allowed him back into Crime Alley. But he also hadn’t seen the guy since floating his way back in. Hadn’t been yelled at or told to leave, though, so he guessed Nadi was right in saying he could. It still felt wrong. Like at any moment he’d be chased out. Nadi had told him multiple times that she’d kick Hood’s ass six ways to Sunday if he said anything about Danny being there, and he appreciated it, but it still felt rude.
It was an eerily similar feeling to trespassing on another ghost’s Haunt.
He felt… conflicted.
On the one hand, Red Hood had taken care of him at one point. Made him food, given him a place to live (to Haunt), and given him something to do. A purpose. Something he’d severely lacked after Amity had emptied out. But then, just as easily as it had been given, Hood had taken it away. Forcibly. Angrily. And Danny didn’t even know what he’d done wrong. Not really. He hadn’t understood most of what Red had yelled at him for- hadn’t a clue who Raysh was- but he could feel the layer of betrayal under it all. The incitement for the anger.
So, on the one hand. Red Hood had hurt him. Deeply. Acting so comfortable around him without his suit and then ripping it all to shreds- the food, the comfort, the camaraderie- before he’d even really gotten to enjoy it. Threw words at him that tore him to pieces. Confirming what he already knew. That he was a monster.
On the other hand. Red Hood had only done that because he thought Danny had betrayed him. Something that seemed to strike deeply within the other man. Something that had already hurt him before. And it didn’t matter, at heart, if Danny had actually betrayed him or not. Just as it didn’t matter that Hood acted without knowing the truth, had lashed out. Because in the end
But was it just that? Just a misunderstanding?
Danny couldn’t tell. He wasn’t keen on finding out, either. The other might have let him back into his territory, but that didn’t mean forgiveness on either side. He couldn’t fathom what the man was thinking and was content (not really) to never find out. He’d follow Nadi, doing whatever she asked of him around the Alley, and avoid Red Hood like the plague. If Hood wanted to talk, then Hood could find him. He glowed well enough for it, it’s not like he was hard to find.
Nadi and the girls were fine enough to watch over. Nadi was a saint for putting up with him. Feeding him. He’d trail after her at night, when she was working the streets, so she had two body guards instead of one- him and Charlie. But during the day he’d pull back to his hide-away in the cemetery. He didn’t want to overstay his welcome, and it left him on edge to stay in the Alley for too long. Where once it had started feeling like a Haunt he could settle into, it felt foreign now.
The girls and guys that Nadi hung around, and Danny hung around by extension, weren’t half as good at figuring out his charades, though. Not like Red had been. It was a little disheartening, and even though he could talk using the whiteboard, it still felt like too much of a hassle sometimes. It was a good enough excuse to keep his distance.
And he needed to remember to keep his distance. He couldn’t forget what he was again. It could put them in danger.
So, he drifted. Nothing new. He kept the girls out of trouble and made sure their customers kept in line. Occasionally let Nadi feed him gas station snacks. Took care of any crimes he saw if he knew Hood wasn’t nearby.
It was one of those times he’d been helping someone who was getting mugged by the docks when he’d heard the first explosion.
═════  ═════
Jason hadn’t known what he was going to walk into after following the instructions on the invitation Harley had given him- but he sure as fuck wished he had.
Fuck the plan, he’d have found another way to snare the stupid clown without having to suffer the indignity of being thrown a welcome home party by the guy who killed him in the first place.
This was so goddamn stupid.
The abandoned carnival grounds near the docks had been the destination- because of course it was. If the freakish funny-man was anything it was certainly on brand. And the ‘party’ was specifically being held in the decrepit fun-house mirror building. Again, because of course it was.
What the fuck was his life? After life?
You know, when Jason had been so enthusiastic about being Robin all those years ago, this was not the shit he’d expected out of the gig. It was supposed to be magic. Supposed to be like flying. Not something that could end so badly with a crowbar and explosives. Nor something that would lead him to the creepiest fun-house imaginable. He was so fucking naive back then.
“Baby Jay!” Harley squealed as he stepped into the building, back tense and gun ready- safety off. She whipped around him, throwing an arm over his shoulders despite the fire-arm so very close to going off near her face. “You made it!”
“Couldn’t miss my own party,” he drawled, using the gun (Mina, this time) to gesture to the large banner hung on the ceiling, just above the entrance to the maze, that said ‘Welcome Home Robin!’ in bright red paint. At least, he fucking hoped it was paint. He didn’t see any obvious bodies, but that didn’t mean there were none. God, he fucking hated murder clowns.
Harley’s grin was sharp as she pulled him into the maze, the gleam on her teeth reflected all around. Her grip around his neck was iron-tight as it pulled him along. He knew this was a fucking trap, knew she’d been lying. But he’d wanted to snatch the clown more than he’d wanted to come up with a better plan. Hadn’t wanted to think it through and plan like he should have. Too distracted by other things. His fingers flexed around the trigger of his gun. If he was going to be an idiot at least he was going to be an armed one.
His eyes tracked their distorted reflections as they moved about the space, Harley knowing which trail to take. He took note of every turn, every dead-end they passed. He’d shoot his way out of the maze if he had to, but he didn’t want to waste bullets.
Sudden cackling rang out as they stepped into a large room within the maze, Joker’s image reflected from every angle as the green menace spread his arms out, bent party hat nearly falling off his head. He could hear the strains of crackling circus music under the laugh. Streamers of red, green, and yellow were hung haphazardly, making the space more confusing as they were reflected in the mirrors in every direction.
“The guest of honor!” Joker crowed, grin just as manic as Jason remembered. Red splattered across his face. Blood or paint? “Welcome home, little birdie!”
And suddenly, Jason wasn’t as prepared for this confrontation as he thought he was. This was the first time he’d seen the Joker since his resurrection. Since he’d died. And he was surrounded on all sides, the grin that haunted his nightmares coming from every direction. The phantom pain of broken bones and cracked ribs twinged as he could see nothing but that crowbar coming at him over and over and over again. The memory of demented laughter ringing out as he was beaten, slowly entwined with the real deal as Harley took advantage of his distraction.
He wasn’t quick enough when Harley’s grip around his neck shifted and grew tighter. Choking him out until everything went black and the grasp on his gun went slack.
═════ ◈ ═════
Something was wrong. He could feel it in his core. This wasn’t your run of the mill explosion disturbing the peace of Gotham. He needed to go faster. To fly.
An unknown panic filled his chest as he tried to take flight, clumsy arms pinwheeling as his feet tried to lift off the ground with no success. Flying had always been one of the harder powers for him to master and even now, six years dead, he had trouble. He’d only ever been able to manage a fast hover or a higher than humanly possible jump. Low flight or a glide.
Right now he couldn’t even lift off the asphalt of the road as he ran toward the roaring fire, the dread like a pit in his soul keeping him grounded and growing worse with every failed lift off. He needed to be faster. He needed to be there already. Someone was dying.
Someone was dying.
═════ ◈ ═════
He woke up in the same room not long after Harley knocked him out, tied to a chair that had been placed on a pedestal in the middle- his mirror image reflected a thousand times around him. His helmet had been removed and even the domino underneath. Not like it mattered when both Harley and Mr. Pudding knew who he was. He could feel the irritating pinch of cheap string around his head. They’d taken the time to give him a fucking party hat. Great.
He tested the rope, his muscles feeling lax and hard to work with while he did it. They’d drugged him. Nothing intense, as far as he could tell. Muscle relaxer, maybe? He didn’t like it. The rope was also unforgiving- wound tight and chafing. The portion tied around his wrists was irritating against his skin- his gloves long gone- and he could tell that if it stayed cinched much longer he’d start loosing circulation.
“You know,” came the drawl of Joker’s voice, echoing around the mirrors with the clown himself nowhere to be seen. “You took such a long time coming back, that I almost thought you never would!”
“Were you betting on it?” Jason spat, words slightly slurred from his jaw feeling loose. Everything felt heavy, like he was being weighted down. At least he was still cognizant. At least it wasn’t Joker gas.
“No, actually,” he said, sounding disappointed. “But what a fun thing to add to the Arkham betting pool.”
“What do you want with me?” Jason asked, tugging at his restraints again. If he kept the clown talking, he could distract him long enough to get free and beat the shit out of him like he’d planned. Probably.
“Not as talkative as you used to be now that you’re a zombie, huh?” Joker said, voice still ringing out and bouncing around the mirrors of the room, making Jason feel slightly dizzy. Which was likely the point. “Straight to the point, no time for chit-chat.”
“Maybe you’re just a shit conversationalist.”
“My, my,” he tutted, “little birdie’s got a dirty mouth now. You kiss your mother with that mouth?”
It didn’t sound like his voice was coming from a speaker, but it was loud enough that the clown should be in the room with him. Maybe around a corner? He couldn’t tell what direction it was coming from, only that it kept circling. And circling.
“Get to the fucking point.”
“Well,” the Joker started, sighing dramatically, scratchy voice grating on Jason’s last nerve. “I’ve noticed that the big ol’ Bat has been taking an interest in you and, honestly, I’m a bit jealous!”
“Gross,” the response slipped out before he’d even realized. He could hear Harley giggling before a smacking sound rang out and he heard her quietly say, “sorry puddin’.”
Oh, he was gonna wring that clown’s fucking neck. He was gonna turn that bastard into a squeaky toy, punch him over and over to see what fun noises he would make next.
“Anyway,” Joker continued, growl to his tone that wasn’t there before. “I figured- I take you out and Batsy has more time to focus on other things.”
“Like you?”
“Like me.”
Again, gross.
“Don’t think I didn’t know you wanted your pound of flesh from me, either. I just decided to go on the offensive about this instead of defensive. Take initiative. Be proactive. Get ahead of the game.”
He was going to have to dislocate something to get out of these binds and he didn’t have the strength to do it while he was drugged like this. Fuck. He was so fucking stupid. If he hadn’t been so damn distracted lately, he wouldn’t have made so many mistakes like this. He needed to get it together already before he got himself killed again.
“And, you know,” Joker continued, “I was thinking, and thinking… and thinking- of some creative new way to kill you…” he trailed off, and Jason could hear footsteps but he still couldn’t see the clown. Just his own reflection, fear mirrored back at him a thousand times.
“But then I thought-,” and then the lights went out and he couldn’t see anything and suddenly he could feel something hovering over his shoulder and he did not like where this was going.
And then the Joker’s voice was right behind him, crooning with delighted malice, “if it ain’t broke!”
There was a whistling noise.
The crowbar came down hard with a crack! against his jaw.
“Don’t fix it!”
He toppled to the floor, still tied to his chair, his left side taking the brunt of the fall where he couldn’t brace himself. He could feel his skull bounce off the concrete. His lungs were constricting with panic. His mouth was filling with blood. Not again, not again.
“Also,” the Joker cackled, the lights in the maze flickering on just in time to watch him bring the crowbar down on Jason’s hands. “How fun is it that I get to murder you twice!”
Pain bloomed in his wrists and his fingers. Broken bones. Bruises. Blood.
“If I had a nickle for every time I’ve killed a Robin-,” Joker mused, stopping to tap the crowbar menacingly against the chair, “well, I wouldn’t exactly be rich but I’d definitely have more nickles than before!”
He watched the crowbar. Up and down. And tap. Tap. Tap. With every word it would thunk against the wood- dangerously close to his already broken hands.
Joker reared back and even though Jason could see it coming it still felt like a shock when he was kicked in the stomach.
Everything hurt. New wounds and old. Phantom pains from the first time he was beaten near to death by this man were making themselves known.
He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t breathe.
The mirrors were starting to blur in and out of vision, flashes of the warehouse from before overtaking his sight. Everything was jumbling together in a mess of pain and uncaged fear and his lungs were straining against his ribs and his heart was beating so, so fast and he was gonna die again. He was gonna die.
He wanted Bruce.
The crowbar came down again. And again. Blood splattered the mirrors. Pooled on the concrete.
It was harder for the Joker to beat him while he was still tied to the chair but that didn’t stop him from hitting every inch he could get. All along his right side, blow after blow. And the whole time he was laughing.
Laughing and laughing and laughing.
Wack!
And Jason couldn’t breathe.
Wack!
Where was Bruce? Why wasn’t he here? Why wasn’t he here to save him? Batman always saved him.
Wack!
He wanted his dad.
“That should do it.” Jason could barely hear the Joker’s voice, faded and distorted as it sounded to his ears. He heard the clatter of metal falling to the ground. “Ta, little birdie! Have fun being dead again!”
“Oh, by the by,” he could only just hear the man, smug glee lacing his tone. “I’ve rigged up several bombs this go around. Expanding on a good idea and all that. Gotta make sure you don’t come back this time!”
The sound of feet tapping away, growing fainter and fainter. Leaving him with nothing but the roaring sound of his own heartbeat and the wet, ragged, desperate pull of air into his lungs.
He was going to die here. All over again. He could already feel the lick of fire crawling over him, the smoke choking him and scratching his throat, the pain of bones snapping as he was flung through the air. The sharp burst of pain that meant his skull was getting crushed.
He could hear the sound of ticking. A countdown. A bomb.
Maybe this time it’d be faster. Maybe this time the explosion would take him out instantly. Maybe this time there would be nothing left to bury.
Maybe this time he’d stay dead.
═════ ◈ ═════
Bruce watched the wreckage from the screen of the Bat-Jet, scanning the drone footage that Alfred had sent him of the latest explosion to rock Gotham and her people. He was already traveling as fast as he could to get back to his city, but he couldn’t help but feel like he was too late. Like he’d failed, even though he couldn’t say way.
Something was wrong and it set a cold pit in his stomach to think that one of his children might have been caught up in whatever new trouble this was. Whether it be Tim or Dick or… Jason. He couldn’t stand to loose another soldier.
And then he saw it, on the edge of the camera, the mysterious meta that had been working with Red Hood around the Alley.
Just standing on the edge of the flames. Suspicious.
He closed out of the footage and focused on getting back as fast as possible.
═════ ◈ ═════
Danny made it to the docks and stopped. Everything was on fire. Everything was wrong. Something was crying out in pain, something that tugged at his core. Something familiar. Something dying.
He broke out into a wild sprint, core leading him in a certain direction. He followed without hesitation. There was no sound but the roar of the fire and the crunch of glass under his boots. There was nothing he could see but flame and smoke and splintered beams. There was nothing he could feel but overwhelming heat and panic.
Where?
He listened. Nothing. He crept forward. Which direction? His core was no longer helpful. Just screaming.
Where?
He listened. Nothing. He turned. There was nothing but fire, and fire, and smoke. And rubble.
Where?
He listened. Nothi- There. Something- digital? Like a clock. Like a counter. Like another bomb. Like what had likely caused the first explosion. It started ticking faster and his heart matched the frantic beat. He had to find them. Now.
He moved forward through the debris, intangible, and searched.
There was broken glass everywhere. Reflective, like mirror shards, it made it all the harder to navigate the space. Fire danced in every direction, sometimes a mirage, sometimes real. Danny continued to sweep through it all, searching and searching. The beeping was getting louder. He needed to go faster, but he couldn’t risk missing the one he was searching for in the first place.
He felt like he was melting.
He moved forward again- there. His core cried out. He’d found them.
They looked broken. The remains of what was likely a chair they’d been tied to was strewn across the small patch of concrete, the legs and back of it still pressed against them with charred rope. There was a broad beam of wood, caught on one of the walls that was still standing, that looked like it’d shielded them from the roof coming down.
They were surrounded by a pool of blood and Danny didn’t know what to do. Wasn’t it dangerous to move people with certain injuries? If they were bleeding would moving them exacerbate the blood loss enough to kill them? Would any of that matter if the second bomb went off while they were still here?
They were still breathing, at least.
As gently as he could, even phasing his arms into the ground to maneuver without jostling them. One arm to brace the back, one arm under the knees. He got a good grip on them. Turned them both intangible. Then booked it.
Their body was large, too large, too awkward to carry. Their blood dripped down to the ground with every step, flying behind them and splattering against the concrete and mirror shards. The fire did not touch them, even if it felt like the heat was trying to devour them both. Smoke smothered everything. Without having to stop and search the area like he had before, Danny made good time fleeing the building and the area in general. He’d have continued to run to a hospital but the blood that slicked his hazmat was too concerning. He needed to patch them up first. Somehow.
The blanket Nadi had given him was phased into his stomach for safekeeping. As were multiple knives to cut it with.
He needed to find a place-
A loud BANG! sounded and Danny braced them both.
The bomb had gone off behind them, the blast sending wood and concrete and glass raining in every direction. The fire roared louder. The wind from the blast whirling past them in a concussive force. He kept them intangible until it passed. He pulled the other into an alleyway that just edged the docks, the noise of it burning being dampened. Like a pocket of safety. Or so Danny hoped.
He laid them down and pulled a knife, cutting the rope around their chest and wrists and legs and freeing them from the leftover chair pieces.
Their hands looked the worst off. Crooked and dark with bruises. Bleeding, but sluggishly at least. Slowing, stopping.
Right arm looked broken, leaking red too. He pulled the blanket out and cut a strip off to wrap it. Anything to stem some bleeding. He didn’t dare touch the hands. Pants were torn and scratched but nothing looked bad underneath. No gaping chest or back wounds but their breathing was rapid. Danny then remembered that smoke inhalation was a thing and tore off his breathing apparatus and the tank that connected it.
He didn’t know what being infused with ectoplasm would have done to the oxygen within it, but here’s hoping it would be fine.
He gently rolled them, noticing more blood was pooling around their neck. Shit. But then it looked like a wound from the jaw not the jugular. He balled up another slice of blanket and pressed it to the underside of their chin. He fumbled with the mask with one hand to put it over their mouth.
And then he noticed who he was treating.
Red Hood.
His hands trembled, mixed emotions entangling in his core, but he didn’t stop.
He placed the mask over his face, noticing that this was the first time he’d seen it completely bare. His domino was missing. He tried not to think about it. Tried not to think about anything except what was practical. (Not about his hands, completely mangled. Not about the blood, so so much of it. Not about any of the grief trying to well up inside him, churning like a building storm.) He fit the mask and moved the strap of it so it was holding the blanket in place, leaving his hands free.
He couldn’t take Hood to the hospital, especially not without a domino. But he needed someone. He’d taken Red to someone for medical attention before. He’d try the clinic again. Ancients, he hoped that doctor Leslie lady was still there.
Hood coughed, rough, body jerking with the motion. His eyes blinked hazily and a low groan escaped his throat before his eyelids fluttered closed again.
His eyes were very blue.
They opened again for a moment, staring at nothing, and Danny could see the man trying to say something. He leaned in close but heard nothing. Danny moved back, assuming that Hood had maybe become delirious with anemia. He couldn’t blame the guy, he’d be a hypocrite otherwise.
A low whine reached his ears and he paused to sweep a hand through Red’s hair to offer a moment of comfort. He couldn’t do much, but he hoped it would calm him for the time being. His aching core might not handle it otherwise.
He wrapped Hood up as much as he could and balanced the man and the tank in his arms before lurching to his feet with them both in tow. He really hoped he could remember the way correctly. The blood may not be flowing as bad, but he still wanted the man treated as quickly as possible.
So Danny, as quickly as he could manage, set off to find Dr. Leslie.
═════ ◈ ═════
Jason’s entire body felt like lead. Heavy, weighed down. Like there was a current running over his body that had sunk to the bottom of a river.
He felt like he’d been hit by a truck. He would know. He’d absolutely been hit by a truck before.
This might be worse though.
He didn’t want to open his eyes. Didn’t want to face the world. Didn’t want to fully remember the latest fuck up that had knocked him on his ass. Joker’s laugh was already haunting him, he didn’t need it back in surround sound.
He was so certain that he was going to die. Again. Because he was a dumb-ass that fell into traps too easily with no backup and a foolhardy plan to out villain the villain in order to get what he wanted. And now, here he was, back to square one with nothing to show for his efforts except a broken- basically everything.
Great.
Question now was- how did he survive? He didn’t remember getting out of there on his own. He didn’t remember getting out of there at all. Maybe he was dead? But this didn’t feel like dying had last time.
(Dying hadn’t really felt like anything at all, not once the pain ended. Or, maybe, he didn’t have a memory of anything else after that. Had he gone to an afterlife? All he knew was that once second he was dying in a warehouse and the next he was waking up in a grave. This didn’t feel half as suffocating as the coffin.)
The only way to answer that would be to open his eyes. Dammit. Fuck.
Someone else was in the room.
He could hear them breathing. Steady. Slow. Someone else had been in the room with him while he was out and injured, which made him tense. But they also seemed to be asleep, which was confusing more than anything. He’d have to open his eyes to even try to guess who it was though. Which he hated. He’d nearly blown up again, the world should be nicer to him. He waited a bit longer, listening to the steady breathing from what sounded like the corner of a small room, before his curiosity (paranoia) finally got the better of him.
He blinked open his eyes, however reluctantly, and braced himself for a blinding light that never came. The room he was in was dim and small. And recognizable. The little sectioned off back room in Leslie’s clinic. Huh.
But who was-
He sucked in a surprised breath that made his lungs ache, making him cough and then groan when that made his ribs twinge. And his jaw ache. Jesus fuck he was a mess.
And Fetcher was there, awake and watching, hovering on the edge of his vision, unmasked face pinched in worry.
“Fuck are you doing here?”
The words came out harsher than he meant, and he regretted them wholly when it made Fetcher reel back and close in on himself. Fuck. He was horrible at this kind of thing. He should apologize, he knew that. But the words were so hard to say and he still wasn’t convinced that he should. That it wouldn’t be better for Fetcher to stop coming anywhere near him. All he did was hurt the guy. It’s all he would ever do.
Fetcher shrugged, small and skittish.
“I hurt you,” he said, not knowing what else to say but the obvious. He was still just so baffled by why the other man was here. Why he’d gone through the effort to save him. Why he’d stayed.
Fetcher looked at him then, pale green eyes heavy in their stare. He tilted his head in a little nod of acknowledgment but otherwise stayed unmoving. Tense and waiting, crossed arms resting across a blood-stained suit. Jason winced at the sight.
“But you saved me?” he asked, uncertain.
Another nod. Another small shrug.
He sighed and closed his eyes for a moment, fire roaring in the memory that immediately came back to haunt him. The pain. The explosion. The jeering laugh of the mad clown that had gotten the better of him again. Tricked him so easily. He was so fucking stupid for falling for his traps again. He should have known his plans would fall through, no matter how meticulous he’d been. Self-sabotage. Because he was arrogant and impulsive and a moron. Just like he’d always been. Just like Batman had always though him to be.
And Fetcher had risked himself for his dumb ass. Had been yelled at and hurt by him and still braved the clown and explosions and a burning dock to save him. He should never have put himself in danger like that. Not for Jason. He wasn’t nearly worth it.
“That was dangerous,” he told him, keeping his eyes closed to avoid having to look the other man in the eye. “You shouldn’t have put yourself at risk like that.”
He took a heavy breath, a cough threatening in his throat from the action.
“You should have just let me die.”
And then he felt a smack to his chest and opened startled eyes to find Fetcher looming over him, angry and glaring with the slight sheen of tears threatening to fall. He pointed a stern finger in Jason’s face (and he couldn’t help but notice it was tipped with a small sharp claw) and smacked him again, lightly, to get his point across.
“Why do you care?” he asked, confused beyond anything why this angel of a man would do anything for him after the things Jason had done and said.
═════ ◈ ════
Danny leaned back after he made sure Red knew he wouldn’t stand for that kind of talk. Not from Hood. And he thought about his question.
That was the thing, though, wasn’t it? Why did he care? Because he sure as hell seemed to care more than just a cursory sense of obligation to not let someone die. Despite the fact that Hood had been an absolute asshole back in the dojo. Despite everything- he cared.
It was in the way he’d made Danny food. In the way he’d taken care of him. Made him feel human again, even if only for a moment. In the way he’d pester Danny to eat and sleep and patch him up when he got hurt. It was in the way he cared. About everyone in the Alley. The way he checked in on the girls so often. The way he brought food and blankets to the shelters so often. The way he tolerated playing with the Alley kids even when he was busy. It was in the way he talked about the changes he planned to bring to Gotham. To make it better. Make it livable for everyone. In how many people he wanted to help that way.
Yes, he murdered people. Yes, he was a Crime Lord. Yes, he could be a bit of a dick.
But he was earnest in his efforts to make the Alley, and Gotham at large, a safe place for innocents. He was a man made of compassion underneath it all. Made of strong convictions and strong emotion. Sometimes that emotion was anger and it overwhelmed him and he lashed out because of it. And yes, he’d lashed out at Danny, but Danny was nothing if not a glutton for punishment and if it meant having Red’s homemade soup again- he’d save the man any day.
He couldn’t exactly say any of that though.
So he simply stepped forward and smiled, small and tired and gave Red another shrug. Then he thought about it a bit and brought a finger to the other man’s chest, tapping the area where his heart was, reveling in the confused look it bought him.
“My heart?” Red asked slowly. “Do you… want it?”
Danny tilted his head in question, now also perplexed.
“Like to eat or something?”
He had to take a deep breath and turn away, shoulders shaking from the laughter he was trying to keep down. Red thought he saved him, that he cared- because he was saving his heart to snack on?! Why? What the fuck? What the hell kind of life experiences had this man had for that to be a reasonable conclusion?
He got himself under control and turned back around to see Hood giving him a bemused smile. It was a nice smile.
He huffed a bit and waved his hand in order to refute Red’s previous idea of cannibalism. Because really. He thought about it, how to convey everything he was thinking. Everything that made Hood a good man at his core.
He pointed at Red. You. And then he held up a hand, flat with his palm facing inward and his fingers touching his chin and pulled it away in a decisive, forward motion. It was one of the few signs he’d been taught so far. Good. And then he tapped Red’s chest again and could almost feel the beating under his fingers. Heart.
Red scrunched his nose and shook his head. “I do not. And that’s way too fucking cheesy a reason anyway.”
Danny rolled his eyes and smacked Hood for what felt like the tenth time already since he’d woken up.
Red smiled before it dropped. He looked up past Danny and toward the ceiling, staring at nothing with a grim look on his face. Danny couldn’t even begin to guess what he was thinking about.
“I was stupid,” Hood murmured. “All I’ve been since I got back is stupid. I never should have fallen for Joker’s trap. Never should have been so blind to what he was up to.”
Of course it was the Joker that Hood had nearly gotten blown up by. Danny fucking hated clowns for a reason and the Joker was just one of them. He watched as Hood raised a heavily bandaged hand in an attempt to comb it through his hair, only to pull back and stare blankly at the mitten of gauze and wrap that enveloped both hands. He accepted his fate with a sigh, weary and broken and Danny wanted so badly to fix it, but he couldn’t. All he could do was watch.
“But I needed him. Still need him. He’s the center of the question, here. The crux of the whole problem,” Red kept talking, low and mumbling and Danny was certain that he wasn’t talking to him anymore. But he wasn’t about to stop listening.
“I underestimated how much it would affect me- seeing him again for the first time. I should have handled that better.”
Danny could see blood seeping into the bandages around his hands, likely from Hood agitating his own wounds for whatever reason. He reached out and caught one of the hands between his own, tapping at the edge where the wrapping stopped in a bid to remind Hood of what he was doing and to stop hurting himself.
“You don’t understand-,” Hood gritted out. “I need that fucker dead. I won’t let him murder anyone else.”
Hood closed his eyes, but Danny still saw the pain within them.
“I should have been the line. My death should have been the line.”
And Danny froze.
No. No, he couldn’t be- He didn’t feel like a ghost. Or a halfa, even. But sometimes… No. There was no way. It was so faint. You couldn’t be a third of a ghost or whatever and he didn’t set off Danny’s ghost sense at all and- he was getting far too ahead of himself. He didn’t even know what Red Hood meant. Maybe he’d gone into cardiac arrest before. Been only medically dead for a few minutes. No ghostly business involved.
But he had to make sure.
He leaned over Red where he was still reclined back in the bed Doctor Leslie had ordered Danny to place him. Bruised and bloody and broken. Almost dead a second time.
He held the man’s head between his hands, solemn as he searched for- for something. Red didn’t say a word, just let it happen, eyes opening and trying to catch Danny’s- question what he was doing without interrupting. And Danny just looked into bright, bright blue and- there was a thin sliver of green. Ectoplasm green. Barely there and barely noticeable. But there all the same.
He pulled back and made Red focus on him. On his stare. All the while lifting a hand and turning it intangible to plunge into the other’s chest. If he was a ghost, or a half ghost, or a quarter ghost, he should have something of a core. Even if it was hiding.
Hood gasped and sputtered and coughed and tried to fight off Danny’s arm with useless hands. But Danny kept his soft grip on the uninjured side of Red’s face and brought his forehead down to rest on Hood’s, trying to calm him. It shouldn’t hurt- just feel weird. But he hadn’t exactly given the other a warning.
He felt Red shiver underneath him, the feeling of a ghost running a cold hand through your chest was never a pleasant sensation, but it was necessary.
He didn’t feel anything at first, waving a hand through Red’s chest, slowly combing through muscle and organ and bone and blood. He didn’t have much experience looking for a core, especially not in one currently still living, but he was letting his instincts drive him. He needed to know.
And then he felt it.
It wasn’t a core, not quite. Not so ghostly but definitely of the dead. It was half-formed and weak and felt like poison. It pulsed feebly when his fingers brushed over it a chorus of anger fear rage pain betrayal betrayal betrayal rang out from the touch.
He pulled back, just enough to take his arm out of Red’s chest and let him breathe, but not enough that he left the bedside. He let Hood take in ragged breaths, coughing and heaving from smoke inhalation damage (he regretted it for that, but not enough to have stopped his search). When it looked like the other had calmed down and was about to question just what the hell Danny had done, he held up a hand.
He pointed at Red. You. He slid a finger across his own throat. Died. And tilted his head to the side to turn it into a question, even though he knew the answer.
“Yes,” Hood said, voice rougher and raspier than before, tight from the cough and likely sore throat. “I died, Fetch.”
Danny stared down at the man, debating on what to say. Red’s eyes searched his own, blue that looked deeper in the dim lighting but he didn’t say anything either. Just let the quiet sit between them for a moment.
Eventually, Danny lifted and hand and pointed towards himself. I. He slid a finger across his throat. Died. He held up two fingers. Too.
10 first line fanfiction game!
Tagged by @aobawilliams !! The very first line is technically SFW tho it is from a smut fic....
Pretty Boy / Trash of the Count's Family (a what if? smut fic for my long-fic) He looks ever so pretty on his knees begging at him.
Playmates/ Megamind (a semi-canon divergent fic where i explore possible alien traditions and dynamics) Wayne Scott, formerly Metro Man, can remember the day he realised that he was being an overwhelmingly large and obtrusive prick with a capital 'P' to the man who would go on to be known as Megamind (Or Megs as the man 'loathed' to be called).
"Oh My God, I'm Becoming My Father."/ DPXDC (a what if Jason Todd met Dani Phantom fic) Jason is fairly sure that he'd never told anyone about his current safehouse; or at least nobody that would think it was a good idea to be knocking on his door at - he glances at the clock on the wall as he stalks through his living room, glad for once that Bruce drilled into him to have night vision in all his domino masks- two thirty in the morning.
Manipulate, Mansplain, Mentally Scar / Justice League (Justice League don't know about the Batfam au) Jason is seriously wondering how Bruce put up with the Justice League sometimes since the skill difference was absolutely astounding to an almost laughable degree.
Toothache fic/ Danny Phantom (ghost king au - finally into WIPS now) If the pain wasn't almost debilitating Danny would feel embarrassed telling Jazz he had a serious toothache.
Danny = Bruce Wayne Au/ DPXDC (title is self-explanatory) Considering it was almost an entire year since he’d turned into a ghost (nearly eight months to be exact and it had been a week after his fourteenth birthday because Fenton luck was in a cosmic level war with Murphy's law for who could be more life-ruining) and he still hadn’t told his parents about the whole ghost thing, Danny was amongst those confused at the suggestion that left his very own mouth that he might need to tell his parents he was now the King of the Infinite Realms.
Leon gets yeeted and realises what dodging a bullet looks like / 2018x2012 TMNT crossover Leon feels the need to clarify that this entire experience is not his fault - well it is in a roundabout sideways squint kind of way (meaning he touched something D told him specifically not to, but sue him he was curious what his twin was up to)- and despite being the twin with the portal sword powers he can’t quite explain how exactly he fell through a portal into… wherever this was.
Issue Found in Translation chapter 24 / TCF (og cale and KRS bodyshare fic) Choi Han keeps himself firmly behind the young Patriarch and his children, one hand on the pommel of his blade the other resting at his side in a half-formed fist; fingers curling and uncurling in his agitation as he watched the sickly young man do his best to not look like he was struggling to hold his youngest child in his arm, whilst they moved throughout the poison Gardens.
Library / TCF (polysoos birthday week fic) Kim Rok Soo, whilst a person who could not forget, often found that he failed to remember his childhood before the orphanage with any kind of consistent clarity.
Well Then.../TCF (What if Lee Soo Hyuk transmigrated into a vampire fic) "Young Master, this old Ron has a question." Okay and tagging.... @gremlin-bot , @murasaki-cha , @reneneedtodie
HELL YEAH CROWN PRINCE PHANTOM whose ectoplasmic signature readings are obviously higher than that of his dad’s, who’s still filtering the corrupted ectoplasm and that takes time, (which is why he only wears the crown and not the ring.) So imagine, imagine that the imaginary of the vengeful angel was only visible to Danny, just like the crown, like imperceptible to human eyes kinda thing. To Batman Red Hood is just another ecto-entity who caught him off guard, and so he has to be better prepared. He goes see the JLD to ask for more information about these entities. They tell him one is the ghost king. Cuz mages can get a read in signatures and one is off the charts level powerful, or maybe Batman just had a scanner I dunno, point is Batman wrongly deduces whose the ghost king in this situation. After all, only one was able to actually display a tangible supernatural form and readings that remained steady during the scan. ((Jason’s are unreliable, funky if he’s not trying and bitch-you-better-start-running if he is.))
So. Batman wants to summon the ghost king. He doesn’t see a reason to involve the JL, just him and Constantine, who’s like ?? I heard there was new management, but…so new that the king’s a literal child?? okay I gotta see this. im putting a bunch of binds and spells so the ghost won’t be able to cross the summoning circle. Like Constantine just has Batman’s initial assessment and a power chart. Bruce’s detailed report indicates the kid has no experience on battle combat and instead just heavily relies on his powers (list of known powers not conclusive), but is still a threat that knows his and his associates secret identity. Curiously, the Bat also put that the kid is heavily suspected of being emotionally compromised.
Anyways
They expect a child.
They get the Red Hood.
Red Hood, who is still a bat, and still trained with assassins. Motherfucker whose ectoplasm readings are again so funky he can pass through the summoning’s restrains and binds as if they are not there. He’s such a little shit about how he’s sprinting the whole thing. He’s ghost adjacent enough he can turn intangible. He’s an expert on combat who can fucking predict what the bat’s planning to pull because he fought alongside him. Dramatic bitch saw Batman and immediately went to throw hands. Especially when the the Bat tries to pull off a gun on him.
Jason: oh so you’re using guns now??? you’re really such a hypocrite!!
Batman: I’m not the one whose letting a child cover for their criminal activities!!
Batman, at some point: I would never hurt my own son!!
Jason:
Jason: 🤡
Batman: how do you know our identities???
Jason, who didn’t know B knew he knew and who also had a pretty hardcore pretty little liars phase ✨: two can keep a secret if one of them is dead. bitch.
Batman:
Batman: this is confirmation. a dead figure from my past told him i’m Batman
…..
Batman, who’s still trying to see an angle to the Red Hood: You are obviously unfit to take care of a child
Jason:
Danny, 15 and thoroughly done with everyone's crap, steals the Crown of Fire and the Skeleton Key and uses the later to find a suitable new High King for the Infinite Realms. The key (also known as Deaths kay) acted like a sort of Infi-map but lacked the limitations of needing a natural portal to spawn in that time/location and could get you past any wards/protections no mater how powerful.
The key spawns him just in front of the form of a sleeping Jason Todd, and Danny decided he wasn't going to question the magical keys judgment and just plops the crown on a bleary and startled Jasons head.
The crown burned for this guy, signaling that it found him worthy and that was more than enough for Danny.
With no context whatsoever, Danny looked Jason in the eye, burning neon green meeting with wide greenish blue, "You're our king now."
Then he vanished.
Jason later finds that the Lazarus entity left behind a handmade pamphlet. It was immensely unhelpful.
#Jason: you are the least adequate person to tell me that you overgrown emo furry#You don’t see ME going into your house to scream all you did wrong when you were a first time dad#Jason somehow finds himself facing a Batman that’s asking him to sign away him parental rights#to which. first. deja vu. that’s even the same pen that B used when he was adopting Jason#and second. no. what the fuck.#Jason can’t believe the AUDACITY of this man#omg Karen you just can’t adopt the first child you think is in a bad place#like Jason bluescreens for a second#then he decides that if Bruce is gonna be such an obtuse little manchild about it then so will Jason#that’s right. uno-reverse card bitch#Jason is about to steal all his siblings back from his dad#Jason revealing himself to all of B’s children: yes hi you’re my sibling now#and you have a nephew!!!#Jason is just on a warpath to drop as many bombshells as he can#like#Yees i’m alive again dickhead please stop crying i missed u too#What no!! Timmers you are my brother no you cannot be my son. why?? bitch Dick will kill me if I take away his older brother dad thing#Dames Dami no you don’t have to compete to see who’s the best kid-nephew here also please don’t try to kill Danny#he has the power to die on command. not the wish#*sigh* wait what do you mean I don’t breathe sometimes?? omg cass hold me I’m having a bit of a panic attack#shit I’m literally king of the dead. oh-uh you didn’t know?? huh. huh#i must still be reeling over you figuring out I was the red hood like two second after meeting me you little menace#Duke still isn’t in the picture. but he would be BLINDED. like shit Danny didn’t you say only other ghosts could see the ethereal glow and#stuff?!?#Danny: DAD that was YEARS AGO you’re stable now and like pulsing mermaid barbie levels of power of course others CAN SEE YOU#dw they learn how to put the blindsides on#but yeah B now has his children giving him the stink eye#OOF I FORGOT#ESPECIALLY AFTER THEY LEARN HE ATTACKED THEIR BROTHER AND NEPHEW#Jason is very happy tho because now he knows he has family that loves him and will avenge him (even if it is against B) 💜😌
Damian Meets the Waynes:
Chaos.
“Enough!” Bruce, Batman, roared in that voice that nobody—not even Jason at his worst—ignored.
Everyone stilled, statues, and waited for information, for instructions.
Bruce nodded sharply, “Thank you. As I was saying, I ran the DNA test myself and it came back as a positive match to both myself and Talia al-Ghul. King Phantom’s most trusted advisor assures us all that there is no mistake. The boy—Damian—is my biological son.”
Tim nodded, already typing away, “So extraction plans—Babs, could you—”
“No,” Bruce refuted, “no need. We’re leaving him with the Phantoms. They’ve loved and raised him.”
“Then why tell us?” Dick cried out, obviously putting together the pieces that Talia had told the most horrid lie.
“Because his parents are going to allow visitation,” Bruce explained, “as long as Damian wants it.”
He inhaled, “They’re coming for dinner next week; I’ve already spoken to Alfred. Missus Phantom, the Queen, and Damian are both strictly vegan and both eat kosher.”
Jason nodded, “I’ll help Alfie then.”
Alfred nodded back, “Very good, Master Jason
“Why does the Queen eat?” Stephanie asked, “Isn’t she a ghost?”
“She’s human. Her husband’s the ghost. Though I’m told he also eats. Speedster level metabolism, I’m told.”
Bruce braced himself, “And they know I’m Batman. They most likely know about all of you. Damian was in the cave for testing.”
Chaos.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Please, treat us like normal humans,” the King said, “we’re not here as royalty but as Damian’s parents.”
“You got it,” Stephanie flashed a thumbs up, “Mr. Phantom, Mrs. Phantom.”
“Danny and Sam,” Sam corrected, “just Danny and Sam.”
“How did you get Damian?” Dick questioned.
“Father was summoned by my maternal grandfather,” Damian explained simply, “I was the sacrifice to the Ghost King in exchange for a longer life. Father and Mother adopted me despite their ages at the time.”
Every vigilante went still.
“Ex-fuckin’-cuse me?” Jason demanded, eyes flashing.
“Master Jason.”
He winced, “Sorry, Alfie.”
But Danny cocked his head, “You—you died before, didn’t you?”
Everyone stiffened, “What do you mean?”
“I can recognize other undead,” Danny explained, “You—you’re something I’ve never seen but undead all the same. Or maybe extremely liminal. But you don’t have a core so you’re not even half-ghost.”
“Someone can be half-ghost?” Bruce’s mind whirled.
Danny smiled sadly, “It’s very rare but it happens. Usually lab accidents and extreme exposure to ectoplasm in traumatic ways.”
Everyone contemplated this.
“But Jay isn’t half-ghost?” Tim asked, thinking.
“Nope. Stinks of ectoplasm but no core so no ghostliness.”
Jason sighed, wiping a hand down his face, “But I was killed then resurrected then dumped into a Lazarus Pit by Talia.”
“Glowing green liquid? Used by the old guy who gave us Damian?” Danny asked.
“Yep.”
“That would do it. That’s corrupted ectoplasm,” Danny sighed tiredly, “nasty stuff. Lemme guess, mood swings?”
“Irrational, unstoppable, homicidal rage,” Jason reported.
“Figures. Well, I’m glad you’re okay.”
“Can we go back to Jason being undead?” Dick demanded, “And Damian being a sacrifice?”
“I don’t think he’s actually undead,” Danny replied, “lots more complications with being all undead. I think he’s just extremely liminal—that means, closer to Death or death-touched than most healthy people. Can’t be sure without him getting checked by an expert. Like my doctor, Frostbite.”
“As for Damian,” Sam spoke up, “it’s good form to have a sacrifice of some sort on hand if you wanna make a Deal. The previous King liked human sacrifices. We don’t but we accept them and adopt them into the family.”
“I have several siblings so adopted as well,” Damian said, “only three were wished away accidentally, for their own safety.”
“Dinner is ready,” Alfred announced and led everyone to the larger dining room where the tablet was fairly groaning with dishes and pitchers.
Dinner was a quiet affair until Damian questioned Dick on his acrobatic abilities; after that, with the Bat secret out, dinner was loud and rambunctious as the Wayne family simply accepted the Phantoms into the fold.
Wished Away 5
Damian's First Cold:
The first time Damian got sick was an ordeal.
His parents fretted and worried, hovering, helping clear his little nose with a suction bulb.
It was just a cold, all the medical professionals agreed, but little coughs broke hearts.
The yetis refused to cure him, citing his immune system needing to develop, and his pediatricians could only treat the symptoms.
They shushed and they cooed; they walked and rocked him. They sang and cried with him.
Then Sam got sick as well.
She refused to stay down in bed.
Then Danielle got the cold as well. She at least had the sense to suffer in bed. But her powers went on the fritz. Which was when they discovered her own ice powers.
Danny and Tucker were near run off their feet and the Fentons and Mansons had to step in.
“I’m fine,” Sam protested from her bed, as everyone had relocated to the Mansons’ Mansion.
“No, honey, you’re not,” Jeremy replied, patting her back through a coughing fit.
“But Dani and Dami—”
“Are well in hand, Samantha,” Pamela arrived with soup, “they have their father, uncle, and both sets of grandparents. It’s okay to rest.”
Sam sagged back slightly, “Frostbite—”
“Is monitoring Danielle,” Pamela informed her simply, handing over the soup, “Doctor Peterson is on-call for Damian. Clockwork is handling the Realms for Daniel.”
“Fine,” she accepted the soup with some grace, “I want updates though; and I will get up if Danny goes down with this cold.”
“Understandable.
Thankfully, Danny never did get the cold and everyone was well enough a few days later.
The last holdout was Tucker, who isolated in his house so as not to infect anyone again.
#Jason was never told about danny being Phantom or being the ghost king#Red hood and Phantom have worked together in the past so Danny assumed his identity was out the window#without confirming if Jason actually knew#Danny assumes that his sister would have talked about it#Jazz can't talk about the observants without feeling murderous rage so she just doesnt lmao#Jazz swears that Jason knew about Danny being Phantom#This doesn't delay wedding planning (via @ew-selfish-art)
Dp x Dc AU: Jason and Jazz have been dating for a while and… Danny presumes that because he knows about Jason being Red Hood that Jason knows about Phantom.
Danny got a text randomly in the afternoon from Jazz’s boyfriend. Which was inherently a strange experience considering Jason was typically dead asleep in the afternoon from all his ‘evening shifts’ and Jazz was in class. Stranger, the message just asked if Danny would be free to meet up today for a short chat. Jason doesn’t reply to Danny’s response of “Anything for my sister’s BOO <3.”
Normally, Jason would start launching into a rant about Danny’s coffee choice being too like his little brother’s when they met at cafes- right now Jason looks deadly serious.
“Look. I’ll cut to the chase of it all. I want to ask Jazz to marry me and well, your folks are shitty but it feels weird to not ask for permission.”
“…Okay?”
“So do I have permission?” Jason asks, a bit of a glare and Danny can see the RedHood’s famous attitude peeking out with the abundance of anxiety Jason must be feeling.
“I mean, Yeah! She loves you and I know she’s been subliminally messaging you to find your balls and ask her already.” Danny rolls his eyes and laughs. His brother-in-law to be sure was a strange guy, but he liked him all the more because of it.
Jason sighs in relief and his normal literature nerd, easy going and plucky ‘cool guy’ attitude comes back. They start chatting about the ring he bought for her, how they’re probably going to have to do a small wedding with his family members to appease his grandpa figure. Its all very cute and optimistic.
“Love it! She mentioned your grandpa’s rose garden before and that’ll be perfect for human family events before the big ceremony.”
“Big Ceremony?” Jason sounds unsure of where the conversation is going.
“Yeah, you know. Plus now that I’m thinking about it, it’s probably for the best that you asked me, the observants would totally turn this into like, an interdimensional faux pa or something if I don’t give them a heads up.” Danny laughs at the idea of it causing an incident, but he can see Jason straighten his shoulders and his eyes attempt to pierce through him.
“Danny. What the fuck are you talking about?” Jason looks more pissed than he looks concerned, and Danny is just confused.
“Cause… You Know.”
“If you don’t give me a real answer I’m going to-” At least Jason was taking deep breaths.
“Hey man, chill out! I guess Jazz keeps it on the DL but my night shift has-”
“Night shift? You’re an engineer.” Jason cuts him off and the fact sounds accusatory.
“And I’m the Ghost King? You knew this?” Danny relents, he hated saying it out loud cause it sounded lame, but he’s not sure why Jason is so up in arms all of a sudden. Jason looked like he might have an aneurysm and Danny knows his expression is declaring Jason is the biggest Dumbass in the world.
“Danny …what the fuck are you trying to say to me right now?”
“That you and Jazz have to have a royal wedding in the Infinite Realms or my counsel and advisors will throw an absolute fit.”
Jason doesn’t reply so Danny decides to add “You know, ‘cause my title translates to the Family’s royal lineage and if you marry Jazz you’ll become a Prince. I guess you don’t technically have to have a big wedding but if you don’t it’ll just mean shit loads of paperwork and a huge fucking headache on my end. Which I can survive but… I’m sensing that you’re frustrated. Let’s call Jazz.”
“Let’s do that.” Jason sounds like he’s being strangled. Danny thinks it’s a bit dramatic but is excited to help Jazz wedding plan.
