Matches sparking Rumors: Prompt
You know what I heard, Lil’ Robbie Malone has been seen sneaking out of Dick Grayson’s Bludhaven apartment, you think Robbie’s a rat or is detective Grayson not as squeaky as he wants you to believe.
Thats nothin, my auntie Sophia is convinced that Red Hood is actually Todd Malone, says he even took the name from Matches old boss.
I heard that Matches is Alvin Draper’s dad.
I could see Matches naming a kid Alvin, isn’t his daughter’s name Minnie?
I thought Minnie was Matches niece?
And you believed that? That man’s got more secret kids than Brucie Wayne.
I bet you twenty bucks to ask Tommy Prince and Andrea Abel if they’re Matches kids too.
No way, they’re always hangin around Lil’ Matches and that kid bites

When Jason starts building his crime lord career, people start inexplicably comparing him to Matches Malone. They have the same mannerisms, the same fighting styles and a similar build. Some rogues even have theories that they're the same guy.
So when ever Matches is mentioned, red hood mutters "fuck that guy" under his breath and since Bruce puts his whole batussy into his personas, he's starts reciprocating that energy. All the rogues are scrambling to find out what happened to cause this beef. The entire Gotham underground now has to pick a side between one of their own who they've worked with and gotten to know over the years versus the new up and coming crime lord that's offering jobs and improving their lives. While Jason is wondering what he can do to stop being compared to Bruce, Bruce is trying to be a supportive parent (which means making sure the rogues don't turn on J) while protecting his persona he's been curating for years.

Batman, panicked by how much the villain knows about him and Jason, decides to infiltrate the Red Hood's gang with his Matches Malone's identity
Jason *oh shit he found out* : wtf wtf wtf is this a joke ? Are you making fun of me ???
Matches!Bruce *oh fuck he's even more unhinged than planned* : ... I don't understand, boss ?
Jason, struggling to find his words in way his men won't understand : you really thought I wouldn't recognize my own fa- urgh I mean genito- wait that not- hum, the guy that raised me ???
Matches!Bruce *wait oh shit the OG Matches Malone had a kid ???* : wait... *I don't even know his name!!* chum, I had to make sure it's really you, I wasn't sure, you understand ?
And then their relationship get better
except Jason is "argh I hate you but also you kinda made the effort of meeting me in my turf and also you didn't say anything about the killing so perhaps..."
and Bruce is like,"Oh shit I accidentally adopted the Red Hood, and also it's my fault his real father is dead, except he doesn't know that and must think Matches just abandoned him one day without any explanation. Also I should really figure out his name at some point"

I wanna see a fic where the Batkids realize that no, Matches Malone isn't just their dad's crimesona. He was a real dude who committed suicide, and Bruce committed identity theft for a mission and then proceeded to... not stop committing identity theft. Like, it legitimately sounds fucking insane when you actually hear it
Bruce: "You've never heard of the sunk cost fallacy?"
Jason, leaning about Matches Malone's origins in detail for the very first time: "Did you -- did you just make a joke?"
Bruce, deflating slightly: "...Matches likes jokes."
Jason: "Oh my GOD--"

I think the comedy of Red Hood and Matches Malone both being known criminals is underutilized. I need fics where they are both working a job "together" but both are perfectly aware they are actually on different sides. They can't say that in front of the other goons without compromising each other's identity though.
So like they are both part of the same heist team. Jason has to figure out if Bruce is here to sabotage the mission or is just intel gathering. (It is actually a secret third thing: father son bonding.)

imagine Bruce using his Matches Malone persona to infiltrate a big party in which many crime lords will be, and not so surprising, but the Red Hood is there, and he is staring directly at Bruce's eyes (He doesn't know Red Hood is Jason yet) and laughing, Bruce just knows that under that helmet he is smiling, and Bruce knows he knows, he doesn't know how but somehow this annoying new crime lord recognized him in a second even with his disguise. He is panicking, Hood will for sure reveal his lie in the middle of all those villains, except he doesn't. Actually, it looks like he is having a lot of fun watching Bruce being alert and anxious. The party ends, Red Hood puts an arm around his shoulders and walking with him to the exit, up close he realizes how big he really is, he is almost the same size as him, just two or three inches shorter. And then the distorted voice practically whisper in his ears "I wated to see how far you could go, really impressive! I love watching you work you know?" and leaves.
Bruce comes back home confused and with seven new theories of wtf is this guy on about

You know the idea that all the Batfam have Malone family identities for undercover work? I think it would be funny if a mobster asked Matches why they hadn't seen Jason's Malone in a while. Specifically, this would be just a bit before Tim arrives on the scene, so Bruce is definitely still raw and getting worse. The angry look on Matches' face nearly kills the mobster that asked, but after a moment Bruce will answer. "He was killed." And there's not one person in the room that doubts that Matches is still grieving. That he would do anything and everything for his son back. One of them breaks the silence, timidly "Who did it?"
No one speaks until Matches answers, looking to all of them like he was trying to wrestle the words out without flying into a rage or breaking down, "It was a Joker attack." There's a round of sympathy, everyone's lost someone to the Clown over the years, and Matches leaves quickly after.
As soon as his car is gone, the mobsters all look at each other, and begin to hatch a plot. It might take a few years, but they'd make sure the Clown gets what he deserves. And that's why Joker's beaten and bloody body is left strung up on Arkham's gates, with "Justice for the Malones" written in blood on the wall.

Danny tries to stop Bruce's evil schemes.
Danny went to Gotham and sees Bruce Wayne and he sees the hints of him being batman but he doesn't get to the right conclusion.
Because he is used to crazy Ghosts and Vlad masters being an absolute fruit loop that is obsessed with money. His parents are crazy scientists that are on the verge of villainous. Danny doesn't see "Billionaire with secrets, kids and a basement" and comes to the conclusion that he's a hero.
No, he full in thinks Bruce Wayne is a villain and then, to top it all off, he sees Bruce out as Matches Malone in the bar he's working at to keep money going. So obviously Bruce Wayne does crimes and has dirt in his basement.
He is now fully convinced that he is up against another fruitloop and works to put said fruitloop down.
And then he meets Bruce's dead Child Jason Todd who apparently died a horrible death and got resurrected? And that child is also a crime lord? Yeah Danny needs to stop this man as soon as possible!

Okay I have this vague idea please let me know if there are any fanfics like this! I NEED THEM
So picture Bruce going as Matches Malone to Jason's villain lair? Because he just wants to make sure he’s ok and Jason just won’t let him or anyone of the batfam go near crime alley, so he gets there and Jason is like??? Wtf are you doing old man? But also he wont blow his dad's cover so he is just very annoyed but playing along while trying to get him out. And all the goons are very confused like why does our new boss have beef with matches?? And Bruce is fully committed to his performance but also he's in over protective dad mode so he is just checking if the railing is secure or if the heaters are working properly, and Jason is in full on teenage angst about his dad is embarrassing him in front of his friends.
#please#I love them#I need them to be ok#bruce wayne is a good dad#overprotective Bruce Wayne#not him scolding Jason about the safety of the railing or something#jason todd#fic rec#but i love the batfam in the fics#batfam#batman and his kids#bruce and jason#red hood#matches malone

I've heard people talk about how gothamites probably assume the Waynes are in the mob and I think it would be funnier if that made more people (including villains) want to be in their good graces.
Goons often try to make a good impression when they're assigned to kidnap a Wayne coz they want to gain their respect while others hide so they don't get a hit put out on them. More then once a goon has brought a CV with him to kidnap Bruce coz he heard the mob pays well. Bruce just gives them jobs at WE.
The penguin would definitely want to form connections or make deals with them. When Bruce insists he isn't a mob boss Penguin thinks he's either playing dumb or he's just being used to launder the money and one of his kids is actually in charge. Tim definitely plays into the crime boss persona sometimes and is Penguin's primary suspect for the ring leader. Jason is offended that no one thinks he "gives off crime boss vibes" and almost reveals his identity in frustration.
Joker's people have also either try to hire them or form a partnership with the Waynes to get more manpower but batman always ruins those schemes prematurely. This isn't particularly unusual for batman to do but the fact that it's a near guaranteed fail indicates that there might be a mole working for Wayne, perhaps the butler, but they don't know enough about the Wayne's businesses and power to throw around baseless accusations. Besides they much prefer working with local trustworthy rogues like Matches Malone anyway.
The only villain really mad about this is Lex Luther coz now Bruce has more money, hair AND street cred then him.

An (Un)Wise Father - Chapter Three
Chapter Three - Give Me Your Blessing.
When Matches Malone strides into Red Hood’s meeting and settles in among the new recruits, Jason Todd has never been more grateful for the full face helmet. Why was dad Bruce Batman here…?
Then Jason thinks back to the gala and curses internally. Bruce had obviously figured out from their encounter at the gala who Red Hood really is, and has decided to… what? Taunt him? Anger flaring, Jason refuses to react to the persona that Jason himself had once helped Bruce to dress up as. Whatever this is, if Bruce wants to play dress up and look like a fool, who is Jason to stop him.
___________
Bruce isn’t sure what to expect when he walks into the meeting led by Red Hood. Even though his recent ‘rescue’ at the hands of Red Hood had Bruce looking at Red Hood’s activities with a new light, there was still the more pressing concern.
Red Hood had deliberately gone for and pressed the emergency beacon hidden on his belt. It could simply be that Red Hood had observed one of them using it. Or perhaps this newest criminal to Gotham just thought Batman was partial to the billionaire as some rumors suggested.
Or Red Hood knows Bruce Wayne’s secret.

Can you explain the Matches Malone, Sunk Cost Fallacy joke pls?
Oh! Yeah. Jason is asking Bruce about Matches Malone, presumably trying to figure out why he's still maintaining the cover of a dead man without many tangible benefits. And instead of replying with justification for his actions (it's a valuable cover, it's not too difficult to maintain Matches' life, he has plans for the cover, etc) Bruce says "you've never heard of the sunk cost fallacy?"
Bruce's wry mention of "the sunk cost fallacy" is a reference to "...the phenomenon whereby a person is reluctant to abandon a strategy or course of action because they have invested heavily in it, even when it is clear that abandonment would be more beneficial."
Essentially, he's saying to Jason that he knows maintaining the Matches Malone cover is perhaps not the best course of action, but he's been doing it too long to give up now. Which is obviously untrue, since Bruce does very little in his life that 1) isn't beneficial or 2) won't be beneficial one day. And the Malone persona is beneficial.
So Bruce is subtly poking fun at himself in front of Jason, joking that clearly he's just being illogical and keeping the Matches persona without tangible benefit. Which very clearly isn't true, based on who he is as a person. And Jason knows that too, which is why he clocks Bruce's joke pretty quickly.
#now that I had to explain it I realize maybe this made more sense in my head#but#anyway#sorry#matches malone#jason todd#bruce wayne#batman#dc#asks
