Disney and Pixar's "Coco" Got Away With Sneaking a Murder Mystery Into a Family Drama and I'm Here For It!
Content Warning: not much since this is a family movie, but there is murder so viewer discretion is advised. Spoilers for Coco ahead! Some people would travel far and wide to live their dreams. But, most of them wouldn’t consider running around the Land of the Dead to do it . . . Miguel Rivera belongs to possibly the only family in Mexico that hates music. Forbidden to play or even be around…

Coco (2017)
A surprising number of animated films deal with death but few with the sensitivity and spirit of Pixar’s Coco. Culturally rich, visually inspired and filled emotion, even if you’ve never celebrated the Day of the Dead, it’s a soulful, thoroughly entertaining adventure.
Aspiring musician Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez) is forbidden from following his passion by generations of family tradition enforced by his grandmother (Renée Victor). After stealing the guitar of Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt), the most beloved singer/guitarist in Mexican history, Miguel is transported to the realm of the dead. To return to the living, he must receive his ancestors's blessing.
Immediately, you’ll notice the care poured into the film’s visuals. I know Pixar always does a great job animating their films, that it feels like it’s a given at this point but this Coco blows away your expectations. The realm of the dead explodes with colours. Every building, every lamp, window and location has been designed to give this place a unique look. For instance, the way buildings look from certain angles create the repeating image of skulls. You see so many that when Miguel is brought to a world where the dead literally walk around and speak to him, you’re non-plussed. Think about that. In this film, we see a character die on-screen. Most of the people Miguel interacts with are dead but it never feels frightening or traumatic.
Coco has the full gamut of human emotions packed into its 105-minute running time. It's even more impressive when considering many watching probably won't know anything about the “rules” of this afterlife. Don't worry, whether you're familiar with Mexican culture and the Day of the Dead or not, the exposition is woven so organically and efficiently it never draws attention to itself but answers all your questions.
I wouldn’t consider Coco a musical but music plays a big role in it. Certain lyrics introduced early on return to suddenly have a different meaning or to reinforce the emotion in a scene. The script is carefully-written, with not one moment wasted. You’re dazzled by the visuals and on repeat viewings, you can wrestle your attention away from the backgrounds and animation to focus on the characters and their journey. This is also where I have some criticisms for the film. The story’s great, the characters unique, memorable and well-developed. The ending, however, feels a bit familiar, particularly if you’ve seen some of Pixar’s other projects. The only other flaw is related to Miguel’s family in the world of the living. They can feel needlessly mean, particularly his grandmother, who only ever acts nice towards him after being cruel or bossy. I’m certain many will recognize their family in Miguel’s. I applaud the film’s choice to make a distinct movie that firmly commits to the culture it's celebrating but this may create a gap between the film and some viewers at points.
Films like Coco are rousing arguments for more diversity in Hollywood. We’ve never seen a production like this one before - not even in 2014’s The Book of Life. Let’s hope the future brings us more opportunities to discover new people, new cultures and stories. This is proof it pays off. (Theatrical version on the Big Screen, November 1, 2019)

We all have dreams and passions, those grand gestures that we would give back to the world if we just had a little more in terms of resources, energy, or anything else for that matter. Maybe these great works just need a little time, and maybe the technology just isn’t there yet. When the time does come, will the world be ready? 𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒑𝒊𝒕𝒚. ₊° tim drake x fem!oc.
Seeing Zoey Katz was like magic. Tim had multiple classes with her, saw her on the field when he was at practice, and they were in the same locker hallway, too— Drake is just nine spots up from Katz. He saw her a lot in the morning, she had stacks of classics on her top shelf that he saw you reading in the middle of a chem lecture. He’d have to ask Jason what he knows about Wuthering Heights.
But every encounter never lost its spark, even when she didn’t even know his name and the most experience they’d ever had was sitting two feet in proximity to each other, where his desk was located beside hers in geography. But this morning, this particular morning, that changed.
His locker wasn’t opening. He’d put his combination in but the door was stuck. He’d had a rough night on patrol and trying to cram in all of his homework, meaning he’d gotten a solid forty-one minutes of sleep and that he was completely and utterly spent. Eventually he slammed a fist right into the dent on the metal door that had been there since the beginning of the semester with no explanation as to how. The sound bounced off the tiled floor and made a few people jump.
“Do you need help?” a voice asked from a few lockers down on the opposite side of the hallway, and Tim looked up. Zoey’s curious pair of brown eyes looked back at him, and Tim’s heart did a little flip in his chest. He’d never realized how cute her voice was when she was being earnest. Her words went up a little in pitch and the sharp edge frays just a bit, and it sounds like petals of gardenias being fluttered by a breeze.
For a stuck locker, it was embarrassing how much he wanted to cry just then. He bit the inside of my cheek and nodded.
She gave him this little quirk of her lips, not quite a smile more halfway there, but barely a flicker. She had a skip in her step, stark white Nikes hitting the floor with a little too much bravado for eight in the morning. Zoey had never struck him as a morning person.
“My friend had this locker last year,” she explained as you examined the jammed door. “He had a bit of a hard time, um, managing anger sometimes. He was a pretty big guy too, and um, kind of... kind of had too much one day. That dent is from his fist.” She pointed to the misshapen circle pressing into the metal.
Tim blinked. “How did he not break a finger?”
“Oh, he broke three,” Zoey chirped— no, that wasn’t the right word. It was more like a dry comment than a chirp. It wasn’t perky or cheery. Slow. Soft. She added in that same airy voice like a freshwater spring, “I think he was fined too. I don’t know, whenever I talk to him we don’t talk about property damage.”
Tim tilted his head, “It doesn’t even come up in conversation every now and then?” he asked.
“Nah,” she said with a lift of her shoulder. “We mostly talk about literature. Anyway, not the point— he punched the locker and the edges are sort of pushed in a bit and it gets stuck from time to time, especially on sticky days like these.” She hooked her fingers beneath his lock and gave the door a firm tug, and the door swung open jerkily with a screeching sound of metal unsticking from metal.
Zoey’s biceps flexed a bit as she did, and Tim wouldn’t lie and say it didn’t turn him on a little. He looked at the inside of my locker, crammed with papers and manila folders and books. Tim pictured hers, neatly stacked Penguin Classics and a binder for each subject organized by colour, and he had to hold back a wince at looking at his locker that resembled the inside of a tornado. “Um, thanks.”
“No worries,” she said. The girl peered inside his locker and amongst the clutter she found her jewel— a battered copy of Gatsby with creases in the spine and frayed edges in the cover. “You’re reading Gatsby?”
His lips fluttered for words. “Y-yeah...?”
“Cool,” she said. “I love that book.”
“It makes no sense to me,” he admitted. Tim noticed her eyes narrowing slightly at the near-death state of his book and quickly added, “I found it for a dollar at a used store, I... The condition is not my doing.”
Zoey laughed. Zoey actually laughed. She put a hand to her mouth and laughed. He’d never heard a more musical sound, her laugh was like silver bells at Christmas and the sound of rain pattering against a windowpane. It was infectious. A smile peeled itself on his lips and he chuckled too, a little puff through his mouth. Their laughs were reversed. Usually she was the one huffing under your breath and he was laughing outwardly. It was nice to see her laugh in the spotlight for once.
“I believe you,” Zoey said with another lingering giggle. “And if you don’t understand, I can lend you my copy. It’s annotated and has footnotes, and it’s, um, in much better condition.”
Tim felt his heart stutter. “U-um, s...sure?”
She did this thing— she folded her hands over her thighs and closed her eyes as she smiled. Her legs pressed together and she seemed to stand up a little taller. “Cool,” she chirped, and that word was the perfect to describe your voice. It was high and sweet and Tim thought a part of him died.
“I’m Zoey, by the way,” she added.
“Yeah, I... I know,” he whispered and Jesus I need to speak up, he thought. His words registered in his head, and he realized that he probably sounded like a creep and a desperate loser all at once. “That’s— that’s not weird or anything,” he stammered out quickly, “We have three classes together. English, Chem, and Geo. I’m on the baseball team too, so I... I see you around a lot. With the cheerleaders.”
Zoey chewed the inside of her cheek and bobbed her head in acknowledgement. “I know you, too,” she said. “Tim, number nineteen. You’re the one who broke Linday’s nose.”
Those words left her lips and Tim knew he went a violent shade of scarlet. His head went fuzzy like TV static and his cheeks prickled with heat and he wanted to die. “O-oh,” he said, but it came out more like a broken whimper. “I— I forgot. About that. In its entirety. Is she okay?”
“She’s out for the season, and thank God,” Zoey quipped, and Tim nearly fucking squeaked. “No one liked her much,” she explained further. “She’s all over this guy on the football team who is so clearly gay— anyway, not the point. Again.”
Tim gave her a nervous laugh, the remnants of words bubbling up in his throat. “Yeah, um,” he muttered, grasping for another topic. His gaze dropped to the floor like the tile had any ideas on how to talk to the prettiest girl you’ve ever seen. “I, um,” he mumbled, lacing his fingers together and fiddling with them in front of his chest. His mind drew a blank. “...I’ll find you after school to ask about that copy of Gatsby.” he muttered almost pathetically.
“Sure,” she smiled, and Tim’s heart did a little flip in his chest. A bodiless voice from down the hall called her name and her head whipped around, her ponytail swishing back and forth as she tried to identify the speaker. “Yikes. That’s Nicole.”
Nicole. The hot-headed cheer captain who Tim had never spoken to in his life, and didn’t plan to. She was tall and slim and beautiful and absolutely terrifying. Two freshmen had quit the squad already because of her, and it wasn’t even October.
“You should probably go, then,” Tim said hesitantly, shifting his weight from one foot to another. “Nicole’s got bite. Don’t want you decapitated before second period. Huge unit test.”
“Gross, don’t remind me,” Zoey gagged and rolled her eyes. “I’ll see you in chem.”
Tim nodded with a tentative smile. “Yeah,” he murmured. “Good luck with the Gorgon.”
Zoey cracked another laugh, this time more of a high cackle that was carefree and spirited. “Oh, do not let her hear that!” she cried before giving him a fleeting wave and sprinting down the hallway.
He tucked a hand in his pocket and leaned back against the lockers as he waved after her, a soft, dreamy smile melting his features. A small chuckle left the boy’s lips, shaking his head and looking down at the floor to hide the flush on his cheeks. Tim closed a fist and made a short, tight pumping motion by his chest, a whisper of “Yes!” slipping out from his teeth.
The boy closed his locker and looked at the dent in the center, saying thank you with his eyes. Thank you dented locker. Thank you angry kid who dented the locker. Thank you thank you thank you! But just as the door slammed shut, Tim realized his hands were empty. First period started in six minutes. He stared at the dented door, “Oh, come on!”
