Psyched to have finally received our copy of Radical Matter: Rethinking Materials for a Sustainable Future (Kate Franklin and Caroline Till, Thames & Hudson, 2018)! This book features four pages on the FrankenToyMobile—co-created by Andrés Lemus-Spont and me, with Louis Fernandez and Michael Pecirno—alongside badass projects from around the world.
Image description: A hardcover copy of the book, propped open so that the front and back covers and spine are all visible. The images are black and white and textured, with bright coral for some text and as the background for other text.

i think without irony that kittle probably loved the frankentoys sid made growing up. he probably asked for a baby doll and spider legs for totally normal purposes

do you think quackerjack would like toy story? :)
Living toys aesthetic, toys being played with imaginatively, the accuracy of design, the wide variety of recognizable classic toys alongside originally inventive ideas, the adventures, plush toys, rubber toys, plastic toys, cloth toys, new toys, old toys, RC toys, well played with toys, things resembling toys being used as toys, playsets built from cardboard to play with the toys, toys wanting to have a home with children to play with them, old toys finding new homes, no one single toy is better than the rest because they're all valid toys, toys, toys, toys, toys, toys
Yeah, I am pretty sure this would be something he'd adore the concept of. He might even overlook the fact that Rex plays video games because I honestly forgot that tidbit until just now myself.
Absolute confliction over Sid, tho, I'm sure. On one hand, absolutely genius frankentoy designs. On the other hand, Sid tortures his toys for amusement.
But to be fair, what boy doesn't want to get thier hands on some bottle rockets and try launch a spaceman into the cosmos? I mean, I can tell you, kids play all sorts of ways with thier toys.
I built little amusement park rides (like the Eggbeater or Farris Wheel) out of K'nex for my beanie babies.
My brothers and I also used to go nuts with my doll house, and let's just say one session ended with secret spies, toy cop cars and doll furniture being launched off the roof with the amazing "baby lifting action" of the father doll.
We once time played the "Game of Life" in reverse during a power outage, called it the "Game of Unlife". You start out rich and then go backwards on the board, putting cards back in the pile and spinning the spinner the other way, and yes, it was glorious.
Upped the ante once in Monopoly by also allowing us to put "loans" on our own toys with each other to pay off the exponential debts we wracked up after changing the rules. Got real wild. I still technically owe my older brother one of my dolls, but he's actually scared of dolls, so we agreed to let that slide.
Kids are wild, man.
QuackerJack would probably understand Sid from a technical standpoint. And then shriek at that Combat Carl being blown to bits. Then probably agree with the toy uprising.
In short: QuackerJack probably would have enjoyed it. And the sequels. And bawl his eyes out over Jessie's backstory.
And just be like
Tumblr media
And I mean that sincerely. Because that's a natural response to experiencing the Toy Story franchise.

once when I lived in the warehouse
Tumblr media
we had a frankentoy competition, to see who could use broken abandoned toys to make the best new toy - here are the top three in the “arena” which featured a tree made out of a pinecone and something’s femur.
My frankentoy was like a scorpion-genie thing with a bunch of little cyberzombie toys inside the cage-thorax and could spill them all out its front from under its shirt - holding a special creepy little one in a sphere from one giant purple fist.
The dude with the hat made one with a real laser and a real little spear launcher, and pirate-with glasses back there had one with like, a working little chainsaw.

Why I think Lego Movie>Toy Story
If you haven’t seen the first Lego Movie best not read this because there are spoilers.
The magic and wonder of toys come to life is nostalgic and plays with our imaginations. A lot of us played with toys, made up worlds, personalities, stories!
The problem I always had with Toy Story was playtime is just that. Play. Even the toys are pretending, the toys don’t actually take on a personality based on the child’s own choosing, they don’t grow up with the kids, they don’t change.
The idea of my toys secretly having their own lives and doing their own things without me, maybe even having way more fun than me? That thought bothered me so much. It makes them feel a lot less like the kid’s own toys, all that indicates they belong to Andy is that he wrote his name on them.
The playtime with our toys is the most special time for us as kids, we can go ANYWHERE with them, be in control of whatever we wanted... And playtime with Andy was just a little side gig the toys all looked forward to, but we barely got to see it other than them repeating the same exact pretend game he started out with later in toy perspective.
But the Lego Movie... That is what it actually what it felt like to play with toys! All of the legos come from the mind of a child, his problems are their problems in a way and they aren’t just pretending for the kid. Who they are is what he made them, and in the real world they can even somewhat influence things without having to completely come to life. So not only does it show this kid’s imaginary world and story, but when they are in the real world it shows that it’s become more than imagination. That the toys can see them, care for them, want to help them and understand they run their world once they see it for themselves.
Otherwise they are completely invested within their own reality that is almost all metaphorical for whatever the kids are going through.
Another thing, in Toy Story the act of customizing toys is seen as barbaric, I honestly used to make weird frankentoys like Sid and I loved them even more because they felt unique and special to me, so thinking I TORTURED my toys to make new toys? Uhhh I didn’t need that.
Lego is obviously all about building, destroying, customizing, but even then the kids take it up a notch to customize their lego figures with things like markers, rubber bands, lollipop sticks, super glue, nail polish remover, and it’s just a part of whatever happens in that world. Because they can be whatever the kid wants them to be. That’s the whole point.
And I love that so much more than Toy Story, it’s much more personal and real feeling, the toys really act like toys should I think, rather than being sentient beings trapped in a cage of boredom relying on their kid to come play with them and make everyone feel like shit if they have to let those toys go.

The FrankenToyMobile will officially be retiring this month! Our final workshop will be on August 15th, in the same location as our very first public event: Davis Square Park, about a mile south of our home.
Since the FrankenToyMobile hit the streets in summer 2015—this is our fifth summer of programming!—we have offered over 100 free public workshops all around Chicago, especially on the South and Southwest sides, in partnership with so many wonderful local groups and with more than 5,000 total workshop participants. It is hard to sum up in few words what this project has meant to us, and of course it's not about the numbers, and it's not even necessarily about the toys. We're proud and grateful to have been able to provide an opportunity for people of all ages to come together—to meet each other, to create together, to rethink and see new possibilities in objects and the world around them, to share joy in the public spaces of their communities. We feel honored and humbled that so many people entrusted us with their ideas, their visions, their places, and their time.
What's next for us? While Andrés Lemus-Spont and I are officially retiring the FrankenToyMobile as a project and activity, we do intend to continue our mobile making practice (including our involvement with the Mobilize Creative Collaborative), likely using the same physical bicycle to offer activities other than FrankenToy-making. We are still committed to the values and drive behind this project, and we want to make room for other ways of engaging, questioning, and making.
We invite you to participate in one of our final workshops, if you can (schedule online). A new addition we're especially excited about is that we will be joined for these by four Guest Artists! Since the founding of the FrankenToyMobile, we have hired teens/young adults (often former students of ours) to co-facilitate FrankenToyMobile workshops with us. Something we've been wanting to do for a while—and finally have been able to do—is invite a few of these individuals to serve as Guest Artists by leading their own workshops alongside the platform that relate to their own creative practices (you will also still be able to make FrankenToys at these events). We're excited for you—and us!—to learn from our Guest Artists in these coming workshops! We'll be sharing more info about each Guest Artist—Emmanuel Dunagan, Margo O’Neill, Simone Reynolds, and Alisha Webster—and their workshop @ https://instagram.com/frankentoy.
We are sad to let the FrankenToyMobile project go, but also excited to see what we can open ourselves up to learn and do next. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this project one of the most rewarding experiences of our personal and creative lives. <3
