My headcanon is that in seventh year, the Marauders decided to find some apprentices to leave their legacy to. They couldn't leave Hogwarts without that.

James as Headboy thought that he needed to do something good with his power.

"What is the point of being the King of Hogwarts if I don't do something good about my Kingdom?"

"You're not a king, James"

"I want Hogwarts to change all the bad things happening around here. The discrimination, the hatred, the old rules. I want to leave my marauder minions a progressive and positive message to spread...."

"Your marauder minions?"

"It is not about all the discoveries we had done with the boys over the years... All our mischief, magical discoveries and secret passages... Which are pretty cool to just abandon... It's about the good things as well. I want to make sure Hogwarts becomes a safe space for future generations... "

Lily raised an eyebrow.

"Is that so?"

"And you as my queen, you should agree with me. Imagine if our princes and princesses come to study here in the future... We'll be famous around here. Legends!"

Lily blushed profoundly.

"That's not... We are not... I am not your queen, James. I am nobody's queen"

James smirked "That's the thing about having a kingdom, Lils. Leadership... We've been chosen to change things around here and influence others with our knowledge"

Lily secretly liked that because it showed how mature James was. How good he actually was. If younger students admired him, then it was good to teach them good things.

James and Sirius chose a group of second years that were as troublemakers as they used to be at that age. But with a good heart. Kids that reminded them of themselves at that age. Someone they could trust.

They were The Marauders fans obviously, great admires of their pranks and they wanted to be just like them.

And of course, all year, James had that group of kids following him around to learn from him. Sirius, Remus and Peter taught them stuff as well. But they adored James the most.

Lily could see how good James was with them. How he behaved like a father to them. These kids and students in general teased James and Lily a lot, calling them King and Queen, Mr. and Mrs. Potter, even Mum and Dad. Lily blushed a lot during all of this and of course it didn't help with her crush.

All of it made Lily slowly fall in love with James.

It was amazing to be the queen of Hogwarts anyway, James's queen. And influence future generations for good.

"Oh...no," Regulus murmured, staring out of his apartment window to the limo waiting in the street below.

James Potter never could do something halfway, could he?

Grumbling, he went to open the door, only to be greeted with a grinning James Potter in a tux, flowers pinned to his lapel, holding out a corsage.

"You didn't, Potter," Regulus breathed, heart hammering, palms sweating, adjusting his own collared shit. When James had told him to dress nice, he'd never imagined...

"Regulus Black, will you go to prom with me?" James asked, smile brighter than the goddamn sun.

"James, I'm twenty-two," Regulus protested, making a huge effort to frown even as a stupid smile threatened to burst from his body.

But the other man just continued to beam. "I...I couldn't stop thinking about what you said. About how you never went to prom."

"I know. You're not very good at hiding your feelings," Regulus said flatly, trying not to shake with pent-up emotion. It was true. Ever since Regulus had offhandedly told James that he hadn't been permitted to go to prom because of Walburga's strict rules and homophobia, James had been beside himself. But Regulus had never imagined James would do this.

"Well, I decided to do something about it," James continued, shaking the little plastic container containing the corsage. "So....?"

Still, Regulus couldn't stand the vulnerability of the moment. "Tell me we're not going to a smelly high school gym," he murmured, taking the container and opening it, admiring the white Calla lilies and gently slipping the bracelet around his wrist.

"No," James chuckled, looking delighted that Regulus had taken the offering. "We're going to my parents' place. I have the backyard set up, and all our friends will be there to make it...y'know...realistic. Sirius has been campaigning for him and Moony to be king and queen for days already."

Regulus snorted, but a wave of something heavier than amusement rolled through him. "You did all that for me?" he whispered, looking up into hazel eyes.

"'Course, baby. I love you," James smiled softly, offering his arm. "Shall we?"

And Regulus wordlessly linked their arms together, allowing James to lead him to the limo waiting downstairs. Privately, he was glad he missed his actual prom. It was much better to say his prom date was James Potter, anyway.

Sitting alone at your roommate’s dinner party, you gazed longingly at the boy who poured a sudden dose of affection into your once-loveless world, a disgruntled frown pressed against your lips.

Only meeting a few weeks ago on a frantic night of music and drinking, Marlene had practically dragged you over to the tall boy with a grand smile spread across his bespectacled face.

You were so enamoured after your first introduction, you completely missed the way the boy - James - leaned tentatively over to Marlene to whisper words of admiration.

“Just like how you described…is it too early to ask for her number? So pretty…” the muttered compliments and queries were drowned out by the blasting music, assisted by your complete lack of self awareness as you pined over the way his hair tickled his neck when he leaned towards your roommate.

You had danced your way through the nerves, guided by the soothing rhythm of pumping bass and new beginnings as you formed a core memory with your roommate and new friends.

Tonight was a different story.

James stumbled around your living room, a few drinks too many compromising his composure as he rambled on the phone to his old girlfriend.

Marlene had told you all about James and Lily, king and queen of their grade, and the sudden end to their relationship after graduation.

While you were relieved to hear the boy was single, you couldn’t help feeling a tinge of jealousy as he rambled on about something excitedly, cheeks blushing and smile only growing wider.

You nursed your drink in your sweaty grasp, feeling the depressing effect of alcohol wash over you like a wave over the Scottish shoreline.

James passed subtle glances towards you, throwing his drink around in his hand as he spoke animatedly down the line to an undoubtedly amused redhead.

Your jealously sparked into unbridled envy, willing yourself to turn back time and dance carefree once again, grinning at the handsome new face as you crossed the dance floor blindly in your memory. You slumped in your seat, allowing your vision to blur as your eyes fell in your intoxicated haze.

James was all but yelling down the line to his lover-turned-friend, gushing enthusiastically through a permanent smile. “Seriously, she’s so cute! I wish you were here to meet her, I think you’d really get along,” He rambled, glancing in your direction every second moment.

“Yes, Potter, I’m sure we’d form an unbreakable bond over shared experiences of being relentlessly pursued by you,” Lily quipped, voice laced with a lighthearted tease. “Oh, shush. You won’t have to deal with my antics anymore if this lovely girl has anything to do with it. I think I’m gonna ask her out tonight, Lils!”

Lily was the only person in the school-born friend group who moved too far away to attend any of Marlene’s late-night gatherings, only kept in the loop by drunken phone calls from the bustling London apartment.

She meant the world to James as one of his closest friends, so he assured her repeatedly that it was crucial she knew about his obsessive new crush before he made a move. Physical distance couldn’t stop him from updating her on every new development in the capital city, constantly obstructing the peace and quiet of her comforting cottage.

“Well, don’t let me keep you,” Lily sighed in partial satisfaction, but mostly in exhaustion at the late hour of the night. “Go get your girl, Potter.”

With that final encouragement, James passed on hurried farewells before hanging up on the past. Now, his gaze was fixed on his future. His cheeks heated at the sight of your soft face, eyebrows furrowed in drunken fatigue.

With a final breath of courage, he pushed through his chorus of friends, Marlene squeezing his shoulder as he passed in knowing encouragement.

Striding along the path of dirtied plates scattered across your dining table, he finally found comfort in leaning against the wooden surface just in front of your current seat.

You stirred at the sound of a deep cough - James clearing his throat to gain just a moment of your attention. “Enjoying the party?” he laughed nervously, never one for small talk with a girl he fancied.

Your eyes winced as you forced your best, welcoming smile at the boy. “Yeah, I am, just uh- lost track of my drinking an hour or two ago…” you admitted, forcing your eyes open to meet James’ bashful gaze, feeling almost sinful at the pleasurable warmth that shivers through you at the sight of his golden eyes.

“So, listen- uh…Marls said you were too good for me and I can’t help but agree with her, I mean,” he shifted his weight to balance his drunken nerves, “you’re brilliant. But I promised myself I’d shoot my shot anyway.” He scrambled to sit beside you, abandoning his position against the table as you stared at him in wide-eyed disbelief, blinking in a fluster that successfully woke you from your alcohol-induced slumber.

“So, um…I really, really like you. You’re so bright and- and gorgeous, and I’m really quite obsessed with you,” he rattled with embarrassed laughter, “I thanked Marlene a thousand times over for introducing us, and I just can’t let an opportunity like this - with you - go to waste. So, with this liquid courage…” he shook the drink in his hand, “I was wondering if you’d want to grab dinner some time. With me. Just us.”

You might as well have called for “clean up on aisle your floor” because your jaw wouldn’t be lifted from the wood beneath your feet any time soon.

“I- I mean, yes! Of course! That…that would be great, James, really,” you responded on autopilot after stunned silence, lost in his lovesick gaze as you subconsciously leaned closer to his warmth. James lit up like a lamp at dusk, grinning ear to ear as you inched closer in unexplored yet familiar comfort.

“Brilliant.”

Your roommate and her friends watched on with smiling pride before leaving you to whisper and giggle like school girls sharing meaningless secrets, bathing in the light of blossoming romance over the candlelit remnants of dinner.

I remember my logic (it’s stupid and I know this probably won’t happen but I felt like a genius when I put things together this way):

A female cancels out this male gene. Let’s take a look at Queen Elizabeth II’s 4 children and their branches of the family:

Charles is bald, as are his sons, William and Harry. William’s a man so he has not canceled out this gene, meaning George and Louis will both become bald someday, as will their sons. The same goes for Archie. Charlotte, however, will not become bald and any sons she may have will not fall victim to this gene. Lili is in the same boat. Any grandchildren of George and Louis and Archie will obtain this royal curse so long as their father is the royal.

Anne is not bald, nor is her son Peter who, if he ever did have sons, wouldn’t have inherited this gene thanks to their grandmother who canceled it out. Anne’s daughter Zara has also (well double) canceled out this gene for her future generations, so her son Lucas won’t be anywhere near bald. Savannah and Isla also double canceled it out while Mia and Lena triple canceled it out for their future generations.

(We all know who the late Queen’s bald 3rd child is, you get the gist, August and Ernest can thank their mums for the genetic pardon.)

Edward is bald, and sadly, I didn’t accurately recall my calculations and James will in fact become bald someday. But Louise has pardoned her future sons and their children and so on.

I can’t remember exactly how but like a year ago I made a chart in my head and the math proved James won’t be bald when he’s older. I forgot the logic behind that but I’m gonna trust my past self lol.

With her sister adamant to make her life miserable, and a husband who seems equally determined to repel her, what else can possibly go wrong?

I think this fic captures their inquisitive nature perfectly. Through their banter, you can see just how compassionate and selfless James is and how he can be very sincere despite his antics. Lily is described in canon as vivacious and this fic illustrates how her reserved nature dissolves when in good company.

He’s tall – really tall, and she definitely has not developed an obsession with that – and wears glasses that are either dorky in a cool way, or hipster in an uncool way. He’s kind of exactly her type which was the first thing Marlene had pointed out when she’d seen him in passing.

Her naked and, more importantly, oblivious neighbour spins around to grab something from behind him and Lily sees… well, everything. More than she wanted to and, at the same time, not enough at all.

So, she does what any reasonable, twenty-five-year-old girl would do; snatches her phone from the bedside table, pulls the duvet up above her head so her naked neighbour can’t see her looking, and texts her friends.
