Ever since you had become a mother, birthday parties were the bane of your existence. The sugar overload, the loud noises, the cleanup afterwards, all amounted to your own personal hell. Yet, you would move hell or high water for your son to have the most enjoyable party every single year.
Today was no different, eight years later you were still breaking your back to ensure every small detail was perfect, from the pin the spikes on the stegosaurus to the cake you’d spent at least a month painstakingly training to make.
A friend of yours, another parent from the school your son Julian went to, came over in the kitchen to give you a hand with some of the snacks.
“How are you managing here?” she asked and you took a deep breath.
“Managing is the operative word,” you chuckled. “Kids having fun out there?”
“Yeah, loads, you’ve outdone yourself again,” she assured you. “Will James be making an appearance?”
“I stopped asking myself that question after we got divorced,” you said while fixing the plate of vegetables and dip. “He’s supposed to, he promised Julian, but we all know how that ends.”
There seemed to be a bit of commotion out in the backyard and you tried to assess what was happening from the window, but your suspicions that something was off was confirmed when Julian’s best friend, Hennock, came rushing inside.
“Mrs. Wilson, something’s going on with Julian,” he said and you frowned while your friend followed you outside to see the kids circling around Julian who seemed to be gripping onto his chest.
“Jay, what’s going on? Are you okay?” you bent down to be closer to his eye-level, trying to understand what was happening to your son.
“Can’t…” he pointed to his mouth. “Can’t…breathe,” he wheezed.
Your eyes went wide, but before you could grab him and run for the car he began to cough and you hoped and prayed there was just something caught in his throat that would make its way out, but with the coughing came spatters of red all over your white shirt.
“Mahi,” you looked over at your friend quickly while picking Julian up. You didn’t have to say a word, she already knew what she needed to do.
Living close to the hospital, it was worth it to drive yourself, that way you didn’t have to wait for an ambulance to get to you. You had made the mental calculations many times before, just in case there was an emergency and now it was finally coming in handy.
When you got Julian in the car, you checked in on his breathing, it was still laboured, but at least at this point he was getting in the air, even if he was coughing up blood.
You turned on the car and began driving while calling your ex-husband with one hand. The line rang until you reached voicemail so you called again, expecting at least this time for him to pick up, only to hear the tone once more.
“Dammit James!” you threw your phone down on the seat next to you knowing you’d deal with him later, now you needed to focus on getting to the hospital without killing either of you.
Barely paying attention to how your car was parked, you grabbed Julian out of the back seat and ran into the ER with him.
Ma’am, what’s going on?” a nurse came and asked you as you put Julian down.
“My son, he-he’s having trouble breathing and he’s coughing up blood I-I-I don’t know what’s happening.”
Before you could say a word they had whisked Julian away and another nurse came to ask you some questions about his medical history and any information that may be important to the doctors treating him.
“Where’s my son?” you asked, “I want to see my son.”
“Ma’am I’m sorry, but the doctors are working on getting his airway cleared, you can’t be with him right now.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line and bit back your tongue. There were a million and one things you wanted to say to the nurse, but none of them would help your situation. On the other hand, finding your ex might.
So instead of finding the waiting room you went over to the elevator and made your way up to the oncology department, briskly walking through the halls until you reached his office. At this point, you didn’t bother knocking, opening the door to see him sitting down over a file and talking with House.
“Hey Greg,” you said in a fake cheery voice. “Mind giving us the room?”
“Oh, this is the wife with the kid, did you forget to pay child support?” House asked James.
“Get out, Greg,” you said warningly and he listened, instead opting to steal the rest of James’ sandwich and slipping past you, while wishing James good luck and letting you slam the door shut behind you.
“What’s going on?” James asked, clearly confused by your demeanour and appearance. “If this is about the party I didn’t forget I was-wait is that blood,” he stood up from his chair and came over to you.
“What’s going on is you didn’t pick up your fucking phone,” you said angrily.
“Hey,” James looked at you sternly. “What is going on?” he repeated his question, this time more pointedly.
You could feel your lips begin to tremble and your vision became blurred while you shook your head.
“Who’s blood is on your shirt?”
You chewed on the inside of your cheek, “It’s Julian’s.”
“Julian-I-what happened?” his demeanour changed from frustrated with your attitude towards him to worrying for his son.
“I-I don’t know he said he couldn’t breathe and then he started coughing up blood and I just picked him up and drove him here a-and now they won’t let me see him.”
“You drove him?” he asked incredulously. “You didn’t think to maybe call an ambulance?”
“That’s what you’re hung up on? That I decided to drive because it was faster than getting him an ambulance?”
“That’s not what I-,”
“Yes it is,” you stepped back. “I wouldn’t have needed an ambulance if you were there.”
James sighed and chose to ignore your comment,
“Where is he?” he asked.
“Emergency room,” you muttered. “They won’t let me see him, you need to talk to them, say something, anything.”
James nodded his head, at least you could agree on that. He walked with you out of the office and to the elevator so you could go to the ER together and figure out what the hell was happening to your son.
When you got down there and James began speaking to the nurses, they informed him that Julian had been moved to the ICU and his respiration was being closely monitored while they ran a few tests to see what had caused the arrest.
You had to fight to hold yourself upright when they pulled back the curtain and you could see Julian hooked up to all the machines and with a ventilator tube stuck down his throat. You covered your mouth with your hand and shook your head again. This couldn’t be happening, now you were supposed to be cutting into cake and opening presents, not sitting in the ICU.
You stepped inside with James and he closed the curtain to give you a bit of privacy and decided to look over his chart and see if they had given any relevant information there. Seeing none, he turned his attention over to you, seeing your eyes filled with tears, unable to tear your gaze away from your son.
James walked over to you and cautiously put a hand on your shoulder, eventually encouraging you to turn around so he could pull you into his arms. You allowed your tears to soak his white coat, gripping onto him so tightly because there was nowhere else to hold.
You could hear his breathing change, accompanied by the small sniffles and you knew he was doing just as bad as you were right now, wiping the tears from his own eyes as he finally allowed himself to see his son as he was, sick, helpless, vulnerable, and only moments ago, without his dad’s help when he needed him most.
Your moment was interrupted when you heard the curtain being pulled back and you saw two doctors standing there. You pulled away from James and wiped whatever remaining tears were in your eyes so you could properly address them.
It seemed as though one of the doctors recognized James and when he looked down at the file and saw the name he made the connection internally.
“Can we talk to you guys out in the waiting room for a moment?” he asked.
“I don’t want to leave my son,” you shook your head.
“Ma’am, this is the ICU and the visiting hours are very strictly adhered to, I think your husband maybe got lucky and pulled a few strings so you could see your son, but we need to leave now.”
“He’s not my husband,” you muttered and reluctantly followed them out of the makeshift room and towards the waiting area.
“Did you find out what was wrong?” James asked, crossing his arms over his chest. “I looked at his chart. You took him for an emergency CT and bloodwork.”
“We also ran a few other tests,” the doctor began explaining. “From the medical history your, um, ex wife gave I had a suspicion of something so we ran a sweat test to check for elevated chloride levels and it just came back positive.”
“Chloride levels?” you looked up at James. “What does that mean?”
James sighed and ran a hand through his hair, “It means Julian has cystic fibrosis.”
“I-I’ve heard of that, is it curable?” you asked.
“I’ll leave you guys with Dr. Liu, he deals with the pediatric cystic fibrosis cases and will be able to answer your questions better than I can,” he wished you a good day and left you alone with the other doctor.
“Cystic fibrosis is manageable-,”
“So you can’t cure it,” you reiterated.
The doctor shook his head, “Unfortunately there is no cure for CF yet, but many people have been able to live longer and happy lives with the medical technology now available.”
James was silent, taking in all the information that was being presented.
“How did he get it? Is it contagious or-or was it just always there?” you asked.
“It’s a genetic condition, so he’s always had it, the symptoms have just gotten to the point where they’re now visible,” the doctor explained.
“I-It’s genetic so one of us is a carrier?” you pointed to you and James.
“We both are,” James said. “Both parents have to be carriers to pass it down to their child, right?”
Dr. Liu nodded and you pressed your lips together.
“C-Can you just tell us what this means for right now?” you asked. “I just think-I think I need a minute.”
Dr. Liu nodded his head and explained they were giving Julian medication to help with the infection and airway damage that caused him to cough up blood, then they would get him on some bronchodilators to help with his breathing for the time being while they assessed what other issues the cystic fibrosis had potentially caused in his body. He’d have to stay at the hospital for a while, but hopefully could be moved to the pediatric ward within the next day or so.
“We can talk more about what Julian’s medical journey will look like later, I’ll give you guys some time together and if you have any questions, Wilson’s got my pager and knows where my office is.”
You nodded your head and thanked him quietly as he left the waiting area. You finally sat down on one of the chairs.
James took the seat next to you and you covered your face with your hands.
“We couldn’t give him a functional family and a happy home and now we’ve given him a chronic medical condition to top it off.”
“Blaming ourselves isn’t going to do anything for Julian,” James said.
“And sitting around here is?” you asked and James sighed.
“No, no it’s not.”
You sat there in silence for a little while longer before you noticed James stand up and motion for you to follow him. As much as you didn’t want to listen to him and just sit and wait until they would let you be with Julian again, you got up and followed him to one of the OR supply closets. He used a key to unlock the door and sifted through some materials until he found what he was looking for, pulling out a scrub shirt in your size and handing it over to you.
You looked down at your own shirt, seeing the red specks of Julian’s blood and closed the door behind your both, pulling your shirt off over your head and handing it to James. You were about to put the other shirt on when you noticed the flecks of dried blood against your chest.
While you eyes were transfixed on that, James had grabbed an alcohol wipe package from the shelves and tore it open with his teeth, removing the wipe and reaching over to help you clean the blood off yourself.
“James, I can do it myself,” you reached for the wipe, but he pulled it away.
“You’ve got some on your neck too, just let me take care of it,” he insisted.
You knew better than to cause a fight over something trivial like this right now so you put your hands down, watching as James tossed your shirt over his shoulder and carefully began wiping away the specks of your son’s blood off your chest, collarbone, and neck.
“Have you eaten today?” he asked you while holding your face to tilt it to the side so he could get a spot he’d missed earlier.
“No, why?”
“Because it’s his birthday, you’d always forget to eat until dinner and even then it would be scraps from the party until I forced you to eat something better,” he recounted. “Let’s just go grab something from the cafeteria before we go back to the ICU, okay?”
“Will it make a difference if I say I’m not hungry?” you asked.
“You can’t take care of Julian if you’re not taking care of yourself.”
You scoffed and pulled the shirt over your head, “And you’ve suddenly become an expert on taking care of your family?”
“Believe it or not, we were once happy and there was a reason we got married and decided to have a child together.”
“And there’s a reason we got divorced too,” you added and opened the door behind you.
You didn’t go to the cafeteria, instead heading back to the ICU waiting room knowing either visiting hours would have to start eventually or they’d move Julian to his own room and you could finally sit with him.
James clearly hadn’t followed you so you ended up alone again, wringing your hands and waiting for some sort of news.
Eventually, you felt a bag drop on your lap and you looked up and saw James standing overtop of you. You looked inside and saw a package of a sandwich, a small bag of chips, and a water bottle.
You knew he was right, that if you didn’t take care of yourself you wouldn’t be able to take care of Julian, so you forced yourself to eat, even if you didn’t want to.
A little while later, Dr. Liu had returned and informed you that they were moving Julian to the pediatric ward and you could stay with him there in his room. When you joined him there, James had taken off his white coat and tossed it on one of the chairs, rolling up the sleeves of his shirt and sitting down next to Julian’ taking one of his hands in his own.
“Don’t you have patients you need to see?” you asked, sitting on the opposite side of the hospital bed.
“I told Cuddy I needed the day, someone else is taking care of it for me,” he said, not removing his gaze from Julian.
With the two of them sitting next to each other like that, you could clearly see the similarities Julian had with his father. They shared the same eyes and nose, and when they smiled they had the same little creases around their eyes.
You wished that’s what you could have been looking at, them smiling together, instead of the frown etched onto James’ face and Julian still fast asleep while an oxygen mask now delivered the air he needed to help him breathe.
“Do you know much about cystic fibrosis?” you asked James, brushing your thumb against Julian’s other hand.
“Only that it mainly affects the digestive system and the respiratory tract,” he explained. “I’m not too familiar with how it's managed, just that there’s regular doctor’s visits and probably some medication and therapies involved.”
You could feel a small stirring and you looked down and saw Julian’s hand begin to move underneath yours.
You smiled when you saw his eyes blink open and James was quick to stand up and come closer to him so he had a familiar face to look at while he took in his surroundings.
“Hey buddy,” James smiled and you could see Julian light up at the sight of his dad. He lifted his hand to try to remove the oxygen mask, but James gently encouraged him not to. “This is giving your lungs an extra hand right now, let’s just keep it on until the doctor tells us it's okay to take it off.”
“But you’re a doctor,” Julian countered and James chuckled.
“I am, but I'm not your doctor. I am, however, your dad so you have to listen to me anyways,” he teased and bent down to kiss his son’s cheek and tickle him a little bit in the process.
“Hey, go easy on him,” you placed a gentle hand on James' arm and he laid off.
“You know,” James said. “It’s still your birthday.”
“It is?” Julian asked and you both nodded and James reached down to grab something he’d brought with him.
“All the presents your friends got you are at home waiting for you to get better so you can open them, but this is what I got for you,” he said. “I was gonna come and bring it to the party, but I think you brought the party to me.”
Julian laughed a little at that and you rolled your eyes, of course James could make himself look good by not showing up.
He sat up with the help of his dad and pulled out the tissue paper from the bag to see the present that was hiding underneath. With a big grin on his face, he took out a dinosaur stuffed animal along with a book all about the different species of the Cretaceous period.
“This is awesome,” Julian grinned. “Thanks dad, I love it.”
James gave Julian another kiss and you joined them, taking a seat on the bed and glancing over at the book on Julian’s lap.
“How are you feeling sweetheart?” you asked, fixing the twisted band of the oxygen mask on his face.
“My throat hurts a little bit,” he admitted. “And I’m kinda hungry.”
“Let me call a nurse and we’ll see what you can eat,” you said and pressed the button to send someone over from the nurses’ station.
Meanwhile, James poured Julian a glass of water and helped him take a few sips of it. His throat was probably irritated from being on the ventilator, but his lungs had become stabilized from the use of the bronchodilators.
The nurse came and you spoke to her about getting Julian something to eat and she said she’d double check with Dr. Liu and then grab him some food.
“Hey, Jay,” you walked over to the bed and took your son’s hand in yours. “Are you okay to hang out here with dad while I go grab some stuff from home? The doctors said we might hang around here for a few days so I think I need to pack a bag.”
“Yeah, that’s okay,” Julian nodded. “Are you okay mom?” he reached up and touched your cheek and you realized you'd let a few more tears slip.
“Yeah, I’m just really happy you’re okay,” you wiped the tears away and pressed a big kiss to his cheek. “Right, Jamie? We’re both happy he’s okay.”
James looked over at you with softness reflecting in his eyes at the sound of the nickname he hadn’t heard in a long time and nodded his head.
“Bring some cake back with you,” Julian whispered. “Even if dad and the doctor say no we can sneak some.”
You laughed at his plan and gave him another kiss, assuring him you’d pack some in a container to bring for him when you came back.
When you arrived at your home, you thought you might cry at the sight in front of you. The kitchen and living room were completely clean, presents piled neatly on the coffee table along with a new card you didn’t recognize. Coming closer, you noticed the bright marker, signature of eight-year-olds across the country, with the message Get Well Soon Julian! written on it and signed by all his friends who had attended the party.
You packed the card in your bag along with a few other things and made a mental note to grab a nice thank you gift for Mahlet to thank her for what she had done.
As promised, you cut a big chunk of cake, enough for the three of you to share, and packed it in a tupperware to bring back to the hospital.
You grabbed a few changes of clothes for both you and Julian and changed out of the temporary shirt you had on and into something more comfortable for the rest of the evening, making sure everything you needed was in place before heading out and going back to the hospital.
When you got back to Julian’s room you saw James squished in next to him on the bed, the book he had bought him opened on his lap as he read its contents to Julian. Julian was resting his head against James’ arm and James was doing those big exaggerations he always would whenever he’d read bedtime stories to Julian, emphasizing all the insane details and changing the inflections of his voice in just the right way to make him laugh.
“I brought cake,” you grinned, holding up the container as you entered the room, holding three plastic forks. “If Dr. Dad says it's okay, we can eat it.”
“Dr. Dad desperately needs some sugar,” James nodded his head and closed the book for the time being while you took a seat by Julian’s legs and opened the container, handing each of the boys a fork.
You helped Julian take off his oxygen mask for the time being and placed it off to the side, acutely aware of how his breathing sounded more laboured without it.
James only snuck in a couple bites of the cake before taking the mask from your side and holding it ready in case Julian needed a bit of an extra hand.
Just as he had predicted, after a few bites of cake Julian was noticing a bit of a difficulty to get air into his lungs and James held up the mask to his face, allowing him to take a couple deep breaths.
“What do you think of the cake, Jay?” you asked.
“Really good, just like everytime you make it,” he grinned.
“I’m sorry you didn’t have a great birthday, buddy,” James apologized. “I mean with all your friends and classmates.”
“What do you mean?” Julian asked. “I think I had a good birthday.”
“You do?” you frowned curiously, wondering what kind of light he’d seen in the day that you and James as worried parents had somehow missed. “What made it good?”
“We’re sitting eating cake. Together. Just like when I was little,” he said simply and you chewed on the inside of your cheek, looking over at James whose gaze hadn’t left Julian. He almost looked disappointed, at what, you couldn’t place, but at least for the moment Julian was happy and that was all either of you really wanted.
You grabbed your purse from the ground and thanked Dr. Liu for all of the information he had given you and assured you’d be there with Julian at the allocated follow-up time you had arranged. You were just about to leave when James came rushing into the room, apologies spewing out of his mouth for being late.
“Late? You missed the whole appointment.”
“I-I did?” he said, looking down at his watch and cursing when he saw the time.
“Jay, sweetheart, why don’t you sit down here,” you moved out of Dr. Liu’s office and set him up on a chair in one of the general waiting areas and handed him his dinosaur book from your purse. “I just need to go have a chat with your dad real quick.”
Julian nodded and opened up the book, flipping through the pages while you grabbed James’ arm and pulled him into a dead-end hallway so you could speak in private.
“What the hell took you so long?” you asked firmly. “We waited for twenty minutes before even starting the appointment!”
“I’m sorry,” James apologized, “I was in the OR with a patient and something went haywire and it took longer than expected to fix it.”
“Still, you couldn’t have told someone to at least pass on a message?”
“I was in the middle of saving a patient’s life! What did you want me to do?”
“I wanted you to be there for your son,” you whispered harshly. “You make promises you can’t keep and I have to watch him get disappointed over and over again. He does not deserve that, especially now.”
James placed his hands on his hips and said,
“I am trying to be there, it’s not for lack of effort-,”
“Well try harder!” you threw your hands up in the air. “You’re an ex-husband James, not an ex-father. You don’t have to show up for me anymore, but you damn well better show up for him.”
When he said nothing you continued.
“Believe it or not, you don’t have to work as much as you do James. You chose to do that and right now that’s coming at your son’s expense and he is scared and vulnerable and neither of us know half of what Dr. Liu is talking to us about. Do you know what he said to me when I was confused about the management plan? He said Dad would know what this means. Dad can help us. And he’s right, you would have known and you can help so stop acting like your fucking schedule controls you and get your schedule under control.”
James was quiet for a moment before he nodded his head,
“Okay,” he said simply.
You knew better than to get your hopes up with him and you didn’t have any more energy to argue, so you told him you could talk more later, but right now you were going to take Julian home so he could rest in his own bed and finally open his birthday presents.
“Is dad coming with us?” Julian asked when you picked him up and began walking away to leave the hospital.
“No, not this time,” you shook your head.
“Did you fight with him again?” Julian asked and you pressed your lips together.
“We just had a disagreement,” you settled on. “You can call him later when he’s done work if you want to talk to him, sounds good?”
Julian was content with your answer and left it at that.
Over the next few days, aside from Julian’s call, you didn’t hear much for James and you assumed things were right on track to going back to the way they had always been. You loved your son to pieces, but this was one time you wished his dad would be here to support, working and caring for Julian on top of trying to figure out how to be his at home doctor was already taking its toll and you didn’t know how you’d be able to keep it up.
One night, you were sitting in the living room reading a book Dr. Liu had recommended. It was detailing strategies for parents with children who had cystic fibrosis. In the middle of your chapter you were interrupted by a knock to your door and you put in your bookmark, wondering who was stopping by this far into the evening.
Unlocking the door and opening it, you found it hard to hide the surprise in your face when you saw James on the other end.
“James?” you tilted your head. “I haven’t heard from you at all this week, what’s going on?”
“I reduced my patient load,” he said, “and I talked to Cuddy about reducing my clinic hours. I still have to do some administrative stuff for the department, but it can be done from home for the most part.”
“Oh,” you were surprised to say the least. You didn’t realize your outburst the other day had worked.
“You were right,” he said. “I need to be here for Julian and I can’t do that if my work always comes first.”
You nodded your head, following along with what he was saying.
“C-Can I come in and see him?” James asked. “I know our custody agreement has always been all over the place-,”
You didn’t say anything, simply opening the door wider for him to come inside.
“He’s asleep in his room,” you said. “When you’re done we can talk some more.”
James nodded and stepped inside, slipping off his shoes and taking off his jacket, making his way to Julian’s room to sit with him for a moment before joining you in the kitchen.
“Want something to drink?” you asked and he said some water would be nice. You poured him a glass while waiting for the water to boil for your tea.
“I saw the book you were reading over there,” he pointed to the couch. “Dr. Liu recommended it to me too, I just finished it the other night.”
“Show off,” you rolled your eyes and handed him the glass.
“What I was trying to say is I think something that stood out to me is having consistency and a routine is good, especially when things are new,” James explained. “I don’t think it makes sense for him to be moving back and forth from here to my place.”
“So you think we should have a home base here?” you confirmed and he nodded.
“I can come by more often, if there’s days where you need to be at work I can be doing the administrative stuff here after school and take care of Julian until you get back.”
You pursed your lips and as you heard the kettle click, moved to pour your hot water into the mug you were holding.
“These are all good ideas,” you started.
“I’m assuming there’s a but coming?”
“But I don’t want to give Julian the wrong impression is all.”
James shook his head.
“You really need to pick whatever it is you want,” James crossed his arms over his chest. “First I’m not here enough, I don’t put my family first. Now I’m putting my family first and you’re worried Julian’s going to think this means we’re getting back together.”
“He doesn’t need to get his hopes up for something that’s never going to happen,” you said flatly.
“Have you ever considered having a conversation with him instead of shielding him from every little thing that might hurt him?” James asked and you rolled your eyes.
“Clearly every little thing can hurt him!” you pointed over to his room. “He can’t even breathe without help, James. Maybe he needs to be protected.”
“Stop, just stop,” James ran a hand over his face. “I can’t get into a fight with you every single time we see each other. Julian is just as much my son as he is yours, if this is going to work we need to be able to have a conversation with each other.”
You took a sip of your tea and said,
“Okay, I’m worried Julian might take the fact that you’re around more the wrong way.”
James nodded his head, “I hear you, so maybe we should talk to him about it and say I’m coming around more to lend a hand around the house and help take care of him.”
“Dad? What are you doing here?” as if on cue, Julian had walked into the kitchen, rubbing his eyes awake and adjusting to the light.
“Julian, where’s your oxygen mask?”
“I don’t wanna wear it mom,” he whined. “I don’t like the way it feels on my face.”
You sighed, having had this conversation at least five times before, you didn’t know what else you could say to convince him.
“Hey buddy, maybe we should listen to mom on this one,” James suggested. “You know that feeling you’ve got right here,” he pointed to his chest. “That’s only gonna get worse if you don’t wear it and we don’t want to have to go to the hospital again, right?”
Julian shook his head and sighed, stomping back over to his room to grab the portable machine and place the tube under his nose and around his ears, allowing him to get the right amount of oxygen.
You looked over at James gratefully and he reached his hand out to yours and gave it a squeeze. It was nice being on the same team even if you had just been arguing.
When Julian came back he repeated his question to his dad who explained that he was here to talk to you about a few things that would be changing soon and that he’d be around more to help look after him.
“If you’re going to be here to help look after me can you stay tonight?” Julian asked. “Mom still has some of your clothes in those boxes in her closet.”
“She does, does she,” James looked over at you.
“It was the stuff you wanted to give away and I never got around to it,” you said. “There’s probably a hoodie and some pyjama pants in there if you want to stay.”
James pressed his lips together and sighed,
“You know buddy as much as I would love to have a sleepover with you I don’t think it’s a good idea if I spend the night here,” James said. “But I can tuck you in again and wait until you fall asleep to go back home.”
“Mom, can you come too?” Julian asked and you nodded your head.
James stood up and helped Julian carry his portable oxygen machine back to his bedroom and you trailed behind them, watching as James carefully tucked Julian back under the covers while peppering his face with small kisses, like he would do when Julian was younger and just learning to sleep in his own room.
“Dad that tickles,” Julian giggled and James simply smiled and continued littering his face with kisses.
“Too bad. I love you too much; I just can’t get enough of you.”
“Alright, move it,” you nudged James from the opposite side of the bed and took your turn. “It must tickle having two parents who love you so damn much.”
“It does,” Julian’s laughter died out as you both finally left him alone, sitting on either side of his mattress.
You both wished him a good night and waited as he slowly fell back asleep. When his breathing was steady and his grip loosened on yours and James’ hands you took it as your cue to leave the room.
James placed a hand on your shoulder as you stepped out of the room, prompting you to turn around and face him.
“I’ll come by tomorrow and we can work out a schedule or something, does that sound good?”
You nodded your head,
“Yeah, I have a work thing tomorrow in the evening, I was gonna ask Mahlet, Hennock’s mom, if she could come look after Julian, but if you’re around…”
“I’ll come for dinner and then do the bedtime routine,” he said and you smiled.
“James I’m begging you-,”
“I won’t be late,” he assured. “No surgeries planned and I’m ending my shift with clinic duty.”
You pressed your lips into a thin line and nodded your head.
“I’ll see you then,” you patted his arm and he showed himself out.
You walked back to the kitchen grabbing your now lukewarm cup of tea and sitting back on the couch picking up your book and opening it, reading until you couldn’t keep your eyes open any longer, falling asleep right there on the couch.
Over the next few months, you, James, and Julian had developed some sort of routine around school, work, and doctor’s appointments. A part of you thought you were spending more time together as a family than when you were married.
Today you had to go in for work, also having reduced your hours, but in a way that you were working in tandem with James. When you arrived back home the house smelled like warm spices and big plates of home-cooked food.
You dropped your keys on the entryway table, next to James’ keys and wallet and took off your jacket, hanging it up before coming to the kitchen and seeing Julian and Hennock doing their homework at the island.
“Mr. Wilson, what is the difference between these two words?” Hennock asked, holding up his paper so James could see while cutting some vegetables for a salad.
“I think the first one is the kind of principal in your school that looks after all the students and the other one is… man, that’s hard to describe. Hey, how do you describe what principle is to an eight-year-old?” James asked you.
“I think that kind of principle is something that guides the way people behave or act,” you sat next to Julian and Hennock. “Like a principle is the foundation for something that people believe in.”
Hennock and Julian still looked a little confused by your explanation so you tried to give an example.
“So a principle could be to be kind to everyone we meet and so people who believe in that principle will try to follow it.”
That put it in better terms for them to understand and there was a chorus of oh’s before they looked back down at their papers and scribbled down a few things to answer the questions they were asked.
“They learning about homonyms?” you asked James and he nodded.
“I talked to Mahlet,” James said, changing the topic. “Hennock’s gonna stay for dinner and she’ll come pick him up around seven.”
“Sounds good, it’s always nice to have you, Henny,” you smiled and ruffled your hand through his coarse curly hair in an endearing way.
“Thanks, Mrs. Wilson,” Hennock smiled.
James was now over the stove, stirring what looked like a soup before giving it a taste and figuring something might be missing.
“Can you taste this?” James asked. “I don’t know why, but every time I make it there’s something off.”
You took a spoon and tried a little bit of the broth, looking down to see that he was making matzah ball soup and immediately when you tasted it you knew what was missing.
“I know what it is,” you said. “But you can’t tell your mom I told you. She swore me to secrecy.”
“My mother told you this?” James asked and you nodded.
“When we were getting married she wanted me to know how to make it the way she would for you when you were sick.”
“And she didn’t think to tell her own son how to do this?” he seemed thoroughly offended, but all you could do was laugh.
“It’s tarragon. I don’t think it’s something everyone adds, it was just something special she’d put in hers to make it a little different. Here,” you reached into the spice cupboard and took out a jar of dried tarragon and took a bit of the herb out of the container and crushed it in your hands before sprinkling it into the soup. James mixed it in and gave the broth a minute to soak in the flavour before trying it again and shaking his head.
“I can’t believe she didn’t tell me!”
“I’ll let you finish having your little meltdown,” you patted his back. “I’m gonna hop in the shower quickly and we can eat when I get out.”
“Did Dad forget the tarragon?” Julian asked and you nodded your head.
“Wow, so everyone knew, but me?” James asked and you nodded your head with a shrug.
“Sorry, I guess your mom has favourites, or something.”
“Figures,” James teasingly rolled his eyes and you chuckled, waving him off and going to take a shower and change into something a little more comfortable.
When you came back outside they had migrated to the dining room table, each with a bowl of soup in front of them and a plate of salad. You sat on the same side as James since Julian and Hennock were already sitting next to each other and the boys happily recounted the details of their school day and playdate with you while everyone ate their soup and salad.
“What did you do at work, Dad?” James asked.
“Oh, nothing interesting,” he shook his head. “I think your mom was doing bigger things than me.”
“Bigger than treating people with cancer? You flatter me,” you drank some of your soup’s broth. “I had a meeting with a big company about a building they’re making.”
“Did you go do a site visit?” James asked and you nodded.
“Engineers are being a pain in the butt, keep making me adjust the design, but we’ll see who gets the last laugh.”
“Mom always does,” Julian told Hennock and they chuckled along with James.
After dinner James helped you clear up some of the dishes before heading out and leaving you with the boys. When Mahlet came by to pick Hennock up you invited her in for tea and a little visit.
“Thanks for coming to stay with Julian the other night,” you said after handing her a mug. “For once, I was the late one and James had an emergency come up so it was a huge help.”
“And how are things now, with the co-parenting?”
You took a sip of your tea, “Weirdly good,” you admitted. “We don’t argue as much which is nice and Julian gets to see his dad more.”
“Do you think maybe you’re not fighting because he’s changing?” she asked.
“I don’t wanna go down that path,” you shook your head. “If Jay hadn’t been diagnosed things would still be the same as they always were.”
“But they’re not. More often than not people show their true colours during times of difficulty.”
You took a deep breath and sighed, “If that was the case I would have seen something worth keeping when my marriage was falling apart.”
Mahlet nodded, seeing as you had a point and your conversation was halted as they boys came out of Julian’s room.
Mahlet and Hennock left shortly afterwards and you quickly got Julian ready for bed, tucking him in and then going to get settled yourself. You looked through a few client papers for work before calling it a night and turning off your bedside lamp, curling into bed and falling asleep.
Your sleep was interrupted in the middle of the night by a tapping on your shoulder and when you blinked your eyes open you saw Julian standing next to your bed.
“Jay, sweetheart, is something wrong?” you asked.
“My stomach really hurts,” he told you and you sat up, motioning for him to come sit with you on the bed.
“Where?” you asked, turning on the light and he pointed to the upper right corner of his abdomen. If you remembered correctly that wasn’t exactly where his stomach was and your suspicions were confirmed when you saw the yellowing whites of his eyes. “Oh, sweetheart, I think we have to go to the hospital.”
“The hospital? What happened?” Julian looked worried and you assured him everything would be alright.
“We’re just being safe,” you told him. “I’m gonna call your dad, maybe he can tell us a little bit more of what’s going on. Do you feel good enough to get your jacket and shoes and your hospital bag?”
Julian nodded his head and you gave him a kiss and he went off to grab his things while you did the same, but also taking your cell phone and calling James.
It took a few rings, but he eventually picked up.
“Hey, did something happen?” he asked and you could still hear the sleep thick in his voice.
“I think something’s wrong with Julian. I’m gonna take him to the hospital, can you meet us there?”
“Yeah, of course, I’m on my way.”
“James…the whites of his eyes were yellow. Does he have jaundice?” you asked.
“It’s possible, was there anything else?”
“Yeah, he mentioned stomach pain, but he pointed to like his upper right abdomen, I think,” you explained while grabbing your bag and putting on some socks.
“Makes sense as a liver issue,” you could hear his car starting in the background. “If he’s presenting symptoms now I would call an ambulance.”
“James-,”
“Just trust me,” he said. “Call 911.”
“Okay,” you nodded your head and hung up, calling the emergency services and explaining the situation to them and then to Julian while you waited for them to arrive.
James made the right call, seeing as while you were in the ambulance Julian began to throw up and the paramedics obviously handled it better than you could have if you had driven him.
When you arrived at the ER they wheeled Julian away and you began getting flashbacks to when you first brought him in.
“Where are you taking him?” you called after them, but no one answered you. “What the hell kind of hospital is this?! Where are you taking my son?!”
“Ma’am they're taking your son to do a liver biopsy,” one of the nurses came back and informed you. “We need you to sign this consent form.”
You nodded your head and took the pen from her hand, signing it, but just as you were about to ask her a question she ran off to give them the okay.
You could feel your anger and worry bubbling inside your throat and you wanted to let it out in a scream and you were about to go running after her, but before you could you felt someone grab your wrist and pull you back.
“James let me go,” you said warningly, looking back at your ex-husband.
“No,” he stated just as firmly.
“James-,”
“I am not going to let you do something you’re going to regret,” he said and pulled you into his chest, wrapping his arms around you, even when you pushed to get away.
“James, let me go.”
“No,” he repeated and simply held onto you tighter.
“Let me-,” your voice broke and you stopped pushing away. “Please, Jamie, please I just want to see him,” you cried into his shirt and he squeezed you so tight you thought you might get bruises in your arm from the way he was holding you.
“I know, I know,” he whispered. “You brought him here and he’s going to be fine.”
“I can’t do this anymore, James. I can't be his mom and his doctor and they can’t expect me to wait out here while they drag him away and ask me to consent to God knows what.”
James didn’t know what to tell you, instead he just continued to hold you close, rubbing his hands up and down your back, and pressed a soft kiss against your temple.
You wrapped your arms around him and finally let yourself fully sink into his embrace, hating yourself for how much you liked it and how good it made you feel while your son was in some back corner of the ER getting a piece of his liver biopsied.
Eventually James pulled away from you, helping you dry your tears on the sleeve of his sweater and walking with his arm wrapped around you to the waiting area. You didn’t know how long you were sitting there, but it was possible that you had dozed off once or twice against James’ arm, waiting to hear some sort of news from the ER doctor.
“Mr. and Mrs. Wilson?”
Your eyes blinked open when James gently shook you awake.
“That’s us,” he said. “Is Julian okay?”
“Your son has a mild case of cirrhosis,” the doctor explained. “Due to his cystic fibrosis diagnosis we believe this is due to clogging and inflammation in his bile ducts.”
“What does that mean for him? Does he need surgery to fix it?” you asked, fighting back a tired yawn.
“Unfortunately, yes,” the doctor nodded. “It’s good you caught it early, there’s minimal damage to his liver so far and he’s still growing which means his liver is too. We can get him into an OR tomorrow if you consent to the surgery.”
You looked over at James and he nodded his head. You trusted him and told the doctor you would sign the papers as soon as you could see Julian.
“He’s been moved to the pediatric ward for now and Dr. Liu has been informed of the development. He should be in touch with you tomorrow.”
“Thank you,” James said and when the doctor left, he helped you up and you began the walk up to the pediatric ward.
When you arrived a nurse pointed you in the direction of his room and after each pressing a kiss to Julain’s forehead you sat on the seat bench together.
“We should sleep,” James said, but you had a hard time imagining how that would be possible.
“I’m having a hard time working out the logistics,” you admitted.
“Come on, it’ll be just like on the way back from our honeymoon,” he insisted, recalling your extremely delayed flight on the way back from France, causing you to sleep with your head on James’ lap, stretched out along the airport chairs.
You were too tired to argue or try and find another way, so you leaned down and rested your head against his legs, closing your eyes and sighing when you felt his hand rub up and down in long motions along the side of your body. Sleep could not have come quicker.
“Mom…Mom, Dad?”
Julian rolled his eyes when he received no answer and grabbed the stuffed animal you had placed next to him when he’d come into the room and threw it at his sleeping parents, nailing his dad in the face.
“Oh, God, mhm, wake up,” James shook you while he raised his hands to rub his face.
“Huh?” you opened your eyes and pushed yourself off of James’ lap. “Oh crap, my back. Remind me not to listen to you when you talk about doing something I did ten years ago.”
“Julian, did you throw Steggy at my face?” James asked, picking up the stuffed animal from where it had fallen on you.
“You weren’t getting up,” Julian shrugged his shoulders.
“Julian,” you chastised and took the dinosaur from James’ hand. “You could have hurt your dad’s important doctor-face,” you joked and rubbed your hand all over James’ face making Julian laugh.
“Okay, okay,” James moved your hand away and gave you a look.
“How are you feeling, sweetheart?” you yawned and moved from the bench to the side of his bed.
“A little better,” he said. “Did the doctors fix what was wrong?”
“Not yet,” James shook his head and came to sit next to you and placed a hand on Julian’s. “You’re gonna have to go in for surgery today.”
“A surgery?” Julian looked a little nervous. “Like cut me open?”
“It’ll be just a line right here,” James drew it with his finger along Julian’s abdomen. “They’re going to fix a part of you called your bile duct and then sew you right back up and you’ll be good as new.”
“Is it dangerous?” he asked.
You looked over at James, a small note telling him to lie to make him feel better. He didn’t need to know all the details.
“No,” James shook his head. “You’re gonna be fine and your mom and I will be here the whole time.”
“Promise?” Julian whispered.
“Swear on it,” James leaned in towards his son and snuck a kiss to his cheek. “We love you, buddy.”
“I love you guys too.”
Dr. Liu came by a little while later to inform you what time the surgery was scheduled for and he helped make Julian feel a lot better about the procedure. When it was finally time for him to go, you were a nervous wreck, but tried not to let it show for Julian’s sake, instead just pressing a big kiss to his forehead and telling him you’d be waiting for him once he got out.
It only took about fifteen minutes of your pacing to get James to grab onto your arm and make you stop.
“You’re gonna burn a hole in the ground,” he said.
“I don’t know what to do with myself,” you admitted. “If I sit I’m gonna fidget, if I stand I’m going to pace.”
“Then come on, let’s go to my office for a second, grab a coffee and a snack and then we can come back out and wait,” he suggested.
You agreed to his idea so he stood up and you walked side by side to his office, passing House who had some comment about your dishevelled appearance together.
“You’re an interesting man, Greg,” you shook your head at him. “You can’t think of any other reason we might be here?”
House was silent so James explained,
“Julian’s in surgery right now. He’s got cirrhosis.”
“Ah so not a late night ex-wife rendez-vous. Can’t get ‘em right all the time,” he shrugged and you chuckled. “I hope the kid’s alright.”
“Thanks, that means a lot coming from you,” you admitted.
He raised his brows and lifted his cane to say goodbye, letting you and James continue your walk to his office.
“House mind that you’re not spending as much time here?” you asked.
“No, he just bothers me more when I am around,” James said while opening the door and letting you inside.
He went towards his desk and pulled out a few packages of snacks tossing you one and you shook your head when you saw the label.
“You still eat these? I thought the FDA recalled them?” you asked sarcastically.
“I’m sorry I have better taste in food than you do,” he said right back.
“Right, this is food,” you chuckled. “And if you have such good taste why didn’t your mom tell you about her secret ingredient?”
“That’s cold,” he pointed to you with a bag of chips in his hand.
“No, it’s true. Just like your dad telling me I was his favourite wife of yours,” you opened the bag James had tossed you.
“Just shut up and eat your snack,” James chuckled and you listened to him, beginning to eat a little something, not realizing how hungry you were until the food made its way to your stomach.
“You got another one of these?” you asked and he nodded, passing it to you when you were finished with the first one.
“Feeling a little better?” James asked and you nodded your head.
“Hey James?” you said, unsure of how you’d gotten to this point, but you were too exhausted to stop yourself from saying it. “I want you to move back in.”
“You want me to do what?” he raised his brows and looked at you stunned.
“I want you to move back in with me and Julian,” you said. “It’s becoming pretty clear to me that it’s safer to have two people around when possible than not and you’re already around all the time now.”
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” he asked. “I mean you didn’t want to give Julian the wrong idea about us.”
“Our lives changed the second we got that diagnosis. I think we need to change along with everything else.”
You couldn’t believe that just barely twelve hours ago you were telling your friend there was no chance James had changed, but here you were saying things that had proved you had changed. Things you wouldn’t have dreamt of saying a year ago.
“Okay,” James nodded. “I’ll move back in.”
You just silently hoped you wouldn’t regret asking.
Waiting for Julian to get out of surgery was a little easier now that you had some food in your stomach and you decided to wait on coffee until you got the note from the surgeon that everything had gone well.
As James had continued to assure you almost a hundred times, the surgery went fine and before you knew it you were back in Julian’s room watching him sleep off the anaesthetic.
“You know he looks like you when he sleeps,” James said from the bench while you sat on the bed next to Julian.
“He does?”
“Yeah, his nose does that same scrunchy thing when he sniffles and when he snores-,”
“Hey, I only snore when I’m congested,” you said defensively.
“I never minded,” James smiled. “I thought it was cute when you sounded like an old man.”
“Yeah, but you’re not fond of all my old man characteristics,” you turned around to face him, still holding Julian’s hand in yours.
“All your old man characteristics?” James furrowed his brows in confusion.
“You told me I argued like an old man. Stubborn and could only see my own way. And I fought dirty.”
“You sure did,” James nodded. “If you brandishing my mother’s clear favouritism shows anything, it’s definitely that you fight dirty, but I never said I disliked that about you.”
“Really? Near the end I thought there was a lot you disliked about me.”
James shook his head, “No, I was just upset and you were passionate. It wasn’t like my other marriages where things just…fizzled.”
“We did go out with a bang,” you inhaled deeply.
“If it weren’t for Julian… do you think we’d…”
You shook your head.
“No, we probably never would have seen each other again. Another old man trait, I hold a pretty mean grudge.”
James pressed his lips together and looked over at his sleeping son.
“I’m happy we had him,” he said quietly. “Even if we didn’t work out.”
“Me too,” you agreed, looking over at Julian quietly snoring, just like his dad had said. “Best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
You leaned down and pressed a gentle kiss to Julian’s nose watching him scrunch it up, making you smile. It was a miracle that two such flawed individuals could make a child so perfect.
“Alright, he is asleep, but I do warn you it took some bribery so you’ll have to buy him another dinosaur book to read to him at night,” you walked out of Julian’s room, dusting your hands off like you’d just finished a heavy labour job.
“I’ll run to the bookstore tomorrow,” James nodded and you fell onto the couch next to him and sighing as you sunk into the plush fabric before noticing what he was doing.
“Where did you pull these out of?” you asked with a soft chuckle.
“I was just clearing up the closet in the guest bedroom and I found a box of these,” he picked up the albums. “Look at this one.”
He placed the book of photos on your lap and you smiled seeing as it was Julian’s baby album, filled with small mementos and little notes you and James had made in the margins.
“Oh my God, Mom’s first day home, she looks like an angel,” you read from the side. “And my response: I look like I just got hit by a bus, cut it out.”
“You can still read my chicken scratch writing?” James asked.
“My most useless talent as I like to call it,” you nodded. “You wrote a lot in here.”
“I used to bring it with me to work cause I missed you guys so much,” he admitted. “Made me feel closer to you.”
You read through some of the notes in the book, chuckling a little at some of the written back and forth you had. Eventually you got to the family portraits you’d had taken a few months after Julian was born, smiling softly to yourself.
You remembered the day well, you felt like you hadn’t slept in weeks, James was just getting off of a twelve-hour shift and you were almost late to your appointment with the photographer. You were worried everything was going to look terrible and you’d barely had enough time to do your hair or makeup, but James had silenced your worries with a kiss and assured you the pictures would be fine.
In the end most of them were terrible, but the photographer managed to get two shots, one of you and James smiling down at Julian in your arms and another immediately after where you were looking up and smiling at each other.
“That session was a shitshow,” you recalled and James agreed. “We did get a few nice things out of it though.”
You looked back down at the pile of albums in front of you and noticed a large white one, tucked under a few things and even though nothing good could come of it, you pulled it out from the bottom of the pile, carefully blowing off the dust and turning the first page.
Centerfold, just like you remembered it, was a picture of you and James on your wedding day. You leaned further back into the couch and James scooched in closer to get a look.
You both looked younger in the picture, with that spark of je ne sais quoi in your eyes.
“I told you there was a reason we got married,” he said quietly, his hand brushing the corner of the photo.
“Yeah, we loved each other,” you said. “That was the reason.”
“Same reason we decided to have Julian,” he added.
You could feel your breathing become a little more shallow and a tightness in your chest as James spoke about Julian. You remembered the conversations so clearly, like you’d had them yesterday, caught between happy and passionate kisses while James made some dirty jokes about getting you pregnant.
That was back when he still couldn’t get enough of you. Before things changed and he slowly distanced himself until it felt like it was just you and Julian against the rest of the world, and not the three of you like he had promised all those nights throughout your pregnancy.
You wondered quietly to yourself what had changed? What had become so unbearable that there was distance in the first place? There was never a lack of love on your end which is why this was dangerous.
At least when there was distance you could be angry with him, you could go to bed at night and not remember all the little things that made you love him in the first place. He wasn’t there as a constant  reminder that you loved his cooking, or even just your banter together. More importantly, it was giving you new reasons to feel that fluttering feeling in your stomach.
You’d always loved how he’d interact with Julian, but now that you got to see it day in and day out, it made it harder to weigh that against the cons of everything. Most notably, this was the beginning of the end. If you let yourself fall you would both crash and Julian would be caught in the middle once again.
You tried to distract yourself by flipping through the album photos to find some funny old picture of a relative or maybe even an embarrassing moment to tone down whatever it was that looking at that picture was making you feel.
All you could focus on was how in every picture, almost without fail, James was looking over at you. Rarely into the camera along with everyone else. He was enamoured, that was the only word to describe it, and oh how much you missed that look.
You made the mistake of tearing away your gaze from the pictures, looking up at James instead, and for a moment you thought just maybe you saw that same look in his eyes. But no. It couldn’t have been. The dim light of the lamp must have been playing tricks on you.
Finally you closed the album and put it back down, unsure of what feelings might resurface if you opened another one. Your honeymoon, family dinners and pictures were all just reminders of the happy times, not what came after.
James did what you didn’t want to, grabbing another album and sifting through the pages until he found what he was looking for, taking a picture out of its protective sleeve and showing it to you.
“Can I keep this one?” he asked.
You took it from his hands, examining it while your fingers precariously held the edges of the photograph.
It was a silly picture, something you had taken while you were travelling. James got someone to take the camera, but along with snapping a few shots while you were posed with smiles they caught a few candids, most notably, James kissing your cheek while you laughed and tried to squirm out of his grasp.
Your finger gently brushed over the spot on the photo where James’ lips were against your cheek before nodding your head.
“Sure, you can have it,” you handed him back the picture and patted your hands against your legs, preparing to stand up. “I should get to bed.”
“I’ll be out here for a while longer if you need anything.”
You gave him a tight lipped smile and stood up, walking towards your bedroom. When you closed the door behind you, you let out a breath you had been holding and ran a hand across your face.
Maybe Julian was never the one at risk of getting the wrong idea.
Waking up in the middle of the night always made you feel uneasy. Especially if Julian was the one waking you up. The chance that you’d have to drive to the hospital or call an ambulance was high and you hated the fear and worry that came along with any possible complications.
Tonight, you woke up on your own accord. Your heart was beating inside your throat and your stomach felt like it was housing a group of persistent butterflies.
You glanced over at the clock and saw the time, flashing in red.
3:07
You took a deep breath trying to steady your heart rate and breathing before peeling away your blanket and kicking your feet over the side of the bed. You grabbed a different pair of pyjamas from your dresser and walked into the washroom, tossing them on the far end of the floor while you stripped down and turned on the water for the shower.
When you stepped inside you hissed initially at the cold, but forced yourself to become fully submerged under the water, closing the curtain behind you. Your muscles clenched as your body adjusted to the temperature, and when the time finally came you let your thoughts and dreams become washed away by the water coming out of the shower head.
You were simply standing there, letting the water fall on your face when you heard the click of the door opening.
“Julian, sweetie,” you sighed, turning around so you could speak. “Maybe you should go to your dad if something’s wrong, I’ll come out in a sec.”
“No need,” you heard a voice that did not belong to your son.
“James? I’m in the shower. What are you doing?” you asked incredulously, feeling the need to cover yourself up even though there was a curtain blocking his view. You felt exposed nonetheless.
“It’s three in the morning, I thought something was wrong, I came to check on you,” he explained.
“And what were you doing up?” you asked.
“Got in late. There was an emergency at the hospital after you guys went to sleep, I dealt with it and just came back.”
You stepped under the running water again, washing the water over your face with your hands.
“So, is everything okay?”
“Peachy,” you said sarcastically, leaning against the wall of the shower.
“Nobody ever says peachy when things are okay,” James pushed further and you sighed, moving to sit down on the floor of the shower, still positioned under the water.
“I just had a dream, that’s all,” you said, watching as the water hit your toes and the ground around you.
“A bad dream?” he asked.
“No, it was more like… déjà vu.”
James sighed, and rubbed his hands on his legs.
“Was it about us?”
He took your silence as a yes.
James didn’t really know what to say, his hands were clasped together as he leaned  forward sitting on the bathroom counter.
“You’re not gonna ask what it’s about?” you hugged your knees close to your chest.
“Would you tell me?”
“Maybe…I don’t know,” you mumbled.
There was another moment of silence before James spoke up again,
“What was it about?”
You turned to face the water with your eyes closed again, gathering the courage to speak.
“It started when I told you I was pregnant,” you said softly. “Like the memory replayed in my head, exactly how it happened.”
“I remember that day,” you heard the soft smile in his voice as he spoke. “You took the test at work and when it came back positive you came straight to the hospital to tell me.”
“I was barely two steps inside your office when I blurted it out, you were eating lunch and had that stupid look on your face with a mouth full of sandwich,” you chuckled to yourself.
“I almost choked on that,” James shook his head. “And I just remember running up to you and freaking out.”
“And then when you were done freaking out and everything sunk in you kissed me, and you told me you loved me, and we cried because we made a child. Our love did that.”
You reached forward and turned the shower off, pushing yourself up on your feet and taking a deep breath before pulling back the curtain. You had told him what you were thinking. You couldn’t get any more exposed than that.
James looked stunned for a moment and it didn’t go unnoticed how his eyes raked up and down your figure.
“Get me the robe, would you?” you motioned to the back of the door and he jumped down grabbing the robe and holding it out for you so you could place your arms into the sleeves and wrap the towelled fabric around you, trying it off with the belt.
When you turned your head to look back at James, you could tell at least you’d succeeded in raising his heart rate, much like he was doing for you recently.
You moved to go sit on the closed toilet while James retook his spot on the counter.
“Do you remember when Julian was born?” he whispered.
“I like it was yesterday. I can’t believe it’s been eight years,” you nodded your head.
He was having trouble holding your gaze and you wondered what he was about to say.
“I-I screwed up,” his voice was soft, almost hurt, like it pained him to think about what he had done. “When you were resting afterwards the nurse asked me if we were going to do a newborn screening. We hadn’t talked about it, but you were so tired and it was such a hard labour…” he swallowed thickly, his voice wavering slightly, remembering the birth. It wasn’t easy by any means and James had often thought that the hardest thing he’d ever had to watch was you in that much pain. “I told her we weren’t going to do it. I just didn’t want Julian to leave and h-he looked so perfect I never thought anything could have been wrong with him.”
James took a deep breath and looked up at the ceiling, “I am a doctor and I didn’t get a newborn screening for my son, what the hell kind of father does that make me?”
“Oddly enough, I think it makes you a good one,” you admitted.
“Even though we could have known about this years before? We could have gotten him treatment, medication, therapies, all sooner?” he looked back at you confused.
“You said it yourself, Jamie. He was perfect for us. Still is.”
James nodded his head and looked forward at the opposite wall. You stood up and walked over towards him, reaching out a hand to gently hold his face, your thumb brushing against his cheek while he looked at you.
“I don’t blame you for this,” you whispered. “I don’t blame you and I don’t think you’re a bad father.”
“I know,” he murmured, “but I do.”
You leaned in and pressed a kiss to his cheek, not knowing what other comfort you could offer.
James leaned in a little to your touch, sitting up straighter when it was gone, trying to play it off like he hadn’t been missing it and craving it as much as you.
You were about to say something when you heard a knock on the washroom door, and this time it had to be Julian.
“Mom? Dad, are you in here too?” you could hear his small sounding voice, a little strained and worried so you quickly assured him you were both inside and opened the door.
“Sweetheart, what happened?” you asked, noticing his tear-stained face.
“I just had a bad dream,” he sniffed and wiped his eyes.
You kissed away his tears first before assuring him everything would be fine, you and James were there to take care of him.
“Why don’t you go and lay down on my bed with your Dad?” you suggested. “I’ll get dressed and come join you.”
Julian nodded and made his way over to your bed while you went to quickly speak to James.
“It’ll be good for you. Both of you,” you told him.
“You don’t mind?”
“Just this once.”
James thanked you with a kiss to your cheek and left the adjoining washroom, closing the door behind him and giving you a minute to get changed and deal with anything you needed to before going back to bed.
When you opened the door and came back into your room, you saw James under the covers with Julian pressed close to him, their foreheads resting together while James told him everything was going to be alright and he could go back to sleep.
You slipped in under the covers, sandwiching Julian between you both, letting his back rest against your chest while you pressed a kiss to his hair.
One hand was tucked under your pillow and another was draped over Julian, and your fingers carefully placed over top of James’.
“Will you be here when I wake up?” Julian asked his dad.
“Right next to you,” he kissed his nose. “Now try to get some sleep, okay?”
Julian nodded his head and yawned and you whispered a quiet goodnight to bed him and his dad before letting your eyes close, silently smiling when you could feel James’ hand finally hold your own.
“You guys, relax, he’s going to be fine,” Mahlet placed a hand on both yours and James’ shoulders while you spewed out your worries. “It’s one night, I have the whole list of things he needs and I’ve taken care of him before, right? It’s just at my house this time so the boys can have a sleepover and you two can have a bit of a break.”
“She’s right,” James sighed. “I’m still worried out of my mind, but she’s right.”
“Mahi, are you sure you don’t want us to come even for a little bit?” you asked.
“Absolutely, if something happens I’ll call an ambulance and then you, but Julian’s been good for months now, he can survive one night away from home,” she assured you.
“Thank you, Mahlet. I’m sure Julian and Hennock will have a great time tonight. Just call us when he’s ready to be picked up tomorrow morning,” James said.
James wrapped his arm around you, giving you a squeeze knowing you were still uneasy about this, but deep down you knew Mahlet was right. The chances of something going wrong at this point were small and you’d had enough time since your last hospital visit to even consider doing something like this.
“You boys ready?” James called and Julian came rushing out of the room with his bag in hand, Hennock following close behind him.
“You have fun tonight, okay?” you bent down and gave Julian a kiss. “And if anything happens or you feel sick, or are having trouble breathing, tell Mahlet, okay?”
“I know, Mom. Dad already told me this like fifteen times,” Julian chuckled.
You looked up at James and he shrugged.
“Alright, well you guys better go before I change my mind,” you crossed your arms over your chest and that was all the permission the boys needed to run off, leaving Mahlet to say goodbye before stepping out and closing the door behind her.
You sighed and turned around, looking at James who had his hands shoved into his pockets.
“You hungry?” he asked.
“I could eat,” you nodded your head.
“Why don’t we make something for dinner together?” he suggested.
You looked at the clock and smiled, “I think we’ve got enough time for pizza, what do you think?”
“I think that’s a great plan,” James agreed. “I can start on the dough and you get the sauce and toppings?”
You gave him a thumbs up before putting your hand out to high-five him, noticing how your fingers so easily intertwined before you walked apart and let go.
James rolled up his sleeves and took off his watch, placing it on the small jewelry tray you kept by the sink for when you were washing dishes, while you went to the fridge and began pulling out all the things that could make good pizza toppings.
Moving to the sink to wash some vegetables, you noticed James’ watch resting there. You didn’t pay much attention when he was wearing it, but now you realized why it looked extra familiar. It was one you had gotten him as an anniversary present after your first year married.
“You still wear that?” you pointed with your eyes to the watch.
“It’s my favourite watch, of course I wear it,” he nodded while portioning the flour into a large bowl.
“Even with that engraving?” you raised a questioning brow.
“Dearest Jamie, Here’s to the first of many happy anniversaries. Love forever, Your Wife,” he recited the engraving back to you.
“I don’t know why you do that to yourself,” you chuckled a little, looking down into the sink.
“Yeah, well why do you still go by Mrs. Wilson?”
“Easier to keep the name than change it again,” you partially lied, it wasn’t the full truth, but it was what you had been telling yourself ever since the divorce was finalized.
James could sense you were lying, but he knew the only way to get you to open up would be to let himself be open with you.
“The watch is my favourite because you gave it to me. Functionally it sucks and it's uncomfortable, but you went out of your way to get me something that looked nice and that’s why I love it.”
You smiled a little to yourself, but kept your head facing the sink and continued to wash the vegetables.
“You’re not going to say anything?” he inquired.
“Do I have to?” you asked.
“That’s normally how a conversation works,” he remarked and you chuckled.
“What do you want me to say?” you asked.
“Honestly, the real reason why you kept your married name,” he said plainly.
You sighed, “It wasn’t a full lie. If I went back to my maiden name Julian and I wouldn’t have the same last name it just makes things complicated and confusing and I didn’t want to deal with it, but,” you added, “I always kind of liked the sound of Mrs. Wilson and even though I was pissed at you all the time I still liked that there was one thing aside from Julian connecting us. I don’t know, maybe I didn’t want to end up like Sam or Bonnie just…detached, like there was barely a trace that you were even there.”
“It’s a fingerprint,” James said. “Mine.”
“Yeah, even though it's small for who we were to each other, it's the fingerprint you left on my life.”
James pressed his lips together and opened his mouth to say something before shutting it and evaluated how he was going to speak,
“Can I ask you something?” he settled on.
“Sure,” you nodded, moving over to the cutting board and placing yourself on the opposite side of the kitchen island.
“Did…Did you ever stop loving me?”
Your smile faltered and James noticed the change in your demeanor, quickly retracting his question.
“You know what, forget I asked,” he shook his head and continued to knead the dough.
There was a moment of silence before you spoke again.
“I didn’t, but I got tired of not being loved back.”
James stopped what he was doing and looked up at you with concern.
“You thought I stopped loving you?” he asked.
“James, I was wife number three. Didn’t take much to connect the dots and see you got tired of me,” you said bluntly. “I wanted to know if I could count on you, and it was starting to feel like maybe I couldn’t. Then the divorce happened and everything after that just made me feel like I was right.”
James chewed on the inside of his cheek and remained silent.
“You didn’t fight for me,” you said quietly. “You fought for joint custody, but you didn’t fight for me. You just…accepted it.”
“I…I didn’t know you wanted me to fight for you.”
“Are you saying you would have?” you asked, unsure of whether or not you wanted to hear his answer.
“I’m saying I thought I didn’t even have a chance,” he admitted.
“So you wouldn’t have,” you clarified for him, beginning to chop the toppings into pieces and separate them into bowls.
He chuckled humourlessly, “I have dated one person since the divorce. I hated it.”
“Why do you have to talk in puzzles, James? Why can’t you just come out and say what you really mean?”
“And then what?” he asked. “We go back to living in the same house. Sleep in separate rooms. Move on now that we know the truth?”
“Say it,” you put the knife down and looked him right in the eyes.
“What are you going to do about it?” he asked, cleaning the dough off his hand. “I’m going to say it and you’re just going to stand there and I have to live with that?”
You walked around the counter and came right up in front of him.
“If you were listening to anything I was saying, you would stop making excuses and say it.”
“Fine!” he threw his hands up in the air. “I still love you. I never stopped loving you. These past few months, even though stressful, have been the happiest I’ve been in so long because I feel like myself again when I’m with you and Julian. Because I feel like your husband, and I feel like a father and I keep kicking myself wondering how I could have been so stupid to lose that.”
“Say it one more time,” you whispered, lifting your hands to hold onto his face. “Please.”
“I love you,” his voice was softer, relieved like after being underwater he could finally breathe again.
You finally pulled him into you, your lips hesitantly resting on his at first, before you found your rhythm again after so long. It was muscle memory, his hands finding the spot they always rested against on your hips, his lips moving in synch with yours, eventually trailing off and finding their favourite spot against your jaw and behind your ear.
“James,” you breathed.
“Jamie,” he mumbled against your skin. “Call me Jamie.”
“Jamie, Jamie, Jamie,” you repeated the nickname until he silenced you with another kiss, muffling your voice.
“God, I missed you,” he whispered when you pulled apart, breathing heavily due to your fast beating heart.
You closed your eyes while your forehead rested against his, feeling his nose touch yours, his hands still firmly planted on your hips when your thumbs brushed against his cheeks.
“Jamie?”
James snuck another small kiss at the sound of the nickname.
“Yes, my love.”
“Can I count on you?”
You could feel him nod his head and confirm with a verbal ‘yes’. And even if it turned out to be a lie, at that moment you didn’t care. He had proved to you that it was possible, you could work with that.
“I love you,” you said and kissed his nose and then you said it and kissed him again for good measure. “You told me twice; I tell you twice.”
James moved his hands up from your hips and brushed the back of his fingers against your cheek, a warm smile coming to his face.
And there was that look, the one you thought had vanished over time. His eyes fully transfixed on you with nothing but love and admiration. It didn’t take much to convince yourself you could get used to seeing that look for a long, long time.

Green or Red
James Wilson x Reader
~★~❤︎~✦~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I’ve been Wilson's best friend for years, I’ve outlasted countless of Wilson's wives and girlfriends. Do you really think someone that's not even sleeping with him has more of a say then me” House wasn’t wrong he has known Wilson longer than you but Wilson was a known simp so you still had a chance.
“Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is then”
“What do you have in mind?”
“Hmmm.. Oh I know we’ll see who can get Wilson to wear a certain coloured tie.”
“Really that’s what you want” You just nod your head, feeling more confident by the second. “Fine, twenty bucks I can get Wilson to wear a red tie”
“Make it thirty and you have deal” House laughed agreeing to your terms
“What colour are you going for?” He asked as you started to head for the door.
“Green”
~~
“James just the guy I was looking for” You intercepted him on his way to the clinic.
“Really what can I help you with ?”
“Well I just wanted to say you look quite dapper today, you look lovely in this blue tie but I think green would look even better” you weren't being subtle at all but you desperately wanted to win this bet.
A blush coated his cheeks in an adorable boy scout way, “Thanks” he fiddles with the end of his tie, “You look lovely today as well.” You smile at the compliment, Wilson is always the sweetest.
“I’ll see you later then” you give him a small wave before walking away.
~~~ House ~~~
“New tie?” House calls out as he pushes his way into the lunch line, forcing Wilson to pay for his meal.
“You're the second one to mention it,” Wilson mumbles as he walks over to a table.
“Not surprised since it's such an eye-sore” House was taking a completely different route than you. Instead of complimenting Wilson he was going to shit on his tie and then suggest a red tie.
“What are you talking about? Y/n just complimented me on it” Wilson is not sure if House is messing with him or if he’s being truthful. He’s more inclined to believe that House is full of shit due to the fact you had no reason to lie to him, but neither does House.
“I’m sure she did” he took an obnoxious large bite of his food, punctuating his sentence. House should have known you would get to Wilson first but not to worry he can convince him otherwise.
“Care to elaborate or are you going to continue to beat around the bush?”
“Y/n lied about your tie being nice because she wants you to look bad at work, because she has a huge crush on you and wants you to look bad so no one else flirts with you. I mean come on your like catnip for the nurses,” Houses says in between bites of food.
Wilson had no idea what to say, did you really have a crush on him, and did this tie look good or bad on him. “I can’t follow you today, and I have no idea why everyone is so obsessed with my tie”
“I’m not obsessed, just thought as your friend you’d like to know you’d look better in a red tie.” He shrugged his shoulders grabbing some fries off Wilsons tray before walking away.
~~
Wilson Knew something was going on between House and You there's just no way both of you coincidently mentioned his tie. Honestly he’s not sure he wants to know. Though when he bumps into you he can’t help but try to pry some hints out of you.
“Hey y/n I was talking to house and he told me something interesting”
“Really what did he say?”
“He was talking about my tie”
“Oh, well I wouldn’t take fashion advice from him, have you seen the way he dresses?” You add a little chuckle.
“He was just saying the same thing about you”, of course he was.
So this weird thing you have going on with House is about his tie.
“That’s a fun coincidence, anywho I better get going but I’ll see you tonight”
“Tonight?” He has absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
“Yeah I’m going to let you take me out on a date”, This may be playing dirty but you were not going to let house win. The stakes are not high but if he wins he’ll constantly hold it over your head. Not that you were only going on a date with Wilson because of this bet. You did really like him but you were planning on making him work a little for it, but you're glad to go on a date with him a little earlier than you originally planned.
~~~~
“Wilson was just telling me about your little date tonight” you knew when House heard about your date with Wilson he would come to tease you about it. “Honestly I’m surprised that you're willing to sleep with him for a messily thirty bucks.”
“I’m not going to sleep with him for a bet”
“I’m not judging, I'm just impressed”
“That’s worse” you call after him, he’s already walking away “I don’t want your approval” but he’s already gone.
~~Later that night~~
After your date with Wilson you did end up going back to his house, and the two of you did end up sleeping together. What can you say? He's very charming.
When you were getting dressed that morning you couldn’t help but smile when he pulled out a green tie. You’ll buy him lunch with your new thirty bucks.

Wilson's pov-
There's a new doctor in the hospital, (y/n) (l/n), neurology and general surgery. she's been here a few months. I see her quite a bit around the hospital, never going to the same place though. I'm coming, she's going. Though we've spoken, I've bought her lunch a few times before but couldn't stay afterwards or she was still working during her lunch. we've had chats on the elevator, or at the coffee machine a few times. But still no longer then five minutes. Yet, I can't seem to get out of my damn head. She's plagued me. I can't even ignore her, I see her I have to say something. Playing this...slow game is getting too annoying. I gotta make her mine.
"You're dummer then you look if you think she wants you." House said, not looking away from the sudoku on his computer. I was sat in the chair in front of his glass desk, it was lunch, we already ate.
"Why wouldn't she want me? I'm nothing like you."  I remarked and he glanced at me before  turning his chair to face me fully,"here we go."
"Is she broken?" He asked and I shrugged my shoulders,"how much have you talked to her?"
"We've talked in passing, a couple elevator rides. I've even bought be her lunch before." I pointed at him and he rolled his eyes and turned back to his computer.
"You've boughten me lunch before, does that mean you wanna fuck me too?" He gave me a fake concerned look at I scoffed at him.
"I think if I wanted to I would've already." I joked, a chuckle tinting my voice,"but seriously, why wouldn't she like me?"
"If she's broken- like I'm sure she is, then she's gonna get bored of you like all the others after you start mending her back to health." He closed the tab on his computer, finishing the sheet, and turning back to me.
"What if she's not broken?" I pressed,"what if she's perfect?"
"Everyone's broken. You have brother trauma and you blame yourself for it all, and let's not forget the depression. Which will spike when you start to feel her becoming detached from you." He crossed his arms and glanced over at the conference room before groaning. I looked over and saw that chase and foreman were in there.
"Ya know what-" He cut me off.
"I've seen her at the pharmacy getting a prescription filled two times a month since she's been here. She broken trust me."
"this is a perfect time to end this conversation." I stood up from the chair and looked at my watch,"she's working the clinic right now."
"So now it's time to go creep around?"
"More like get my hours for the day in, be there to offer assistance if needed." He looked at me plainly before holding his face in his palm shaking his head.
"You are desperate." He finally looked back up at me.
"And now I'm leaving."
Your pov-
I signed Into the clinic and grabbed a folder from the stack on the desk and took a look inside. Kid has a fever, a rash on his chest. Easy enough.
"Hey (l/n)." I heard behind me to I looked over my shoulder and saw Dr.Wilson signing in.
"Hey Wilson." I smiled, holding the folder in one hand against my side,"how's that patient by the way?" The last time we were in an elevator together he told me about a patient of his, It sounded interesting so I wanted to catch up.
"I think we caught it just in time." He grabbed a folder from the Stack,"what did you get?"
"Kid has a fever and a rash, room three. You?"
"Four day headache." He answered,"room five."
"Then I guess I'll see you in a bit." I started walking away and he smiled and nodded.
He was charming. His presence was charming. It was a bit sad that I didn't see him all the time, I specialized in general surgery and neurology. You'd think we'd see each other more, neurology and oncology work close together in most cases, but that hasn't happened yet.
I opened the door to exam room three, and closed it behind me. A brunette mother was standing next to the bed, her seven year old son playing with a Gameboy.
"Hello I'm Dr.(l/n)." I greeted them as I opened the folder again, holding it in my left arm.
"Mary." She introduced her self.
"so..Conner here has a rash and a fever?"
"A hundred point two this morning, and it's On his chest." She looked down to him, and gently took the gameboy away from him and out in her purse which was over her shoulder,"he's had the rash for two days, the fever came this morning."
"Any history I should know about? Recent trav-"
"No nothing like that. He just got this rash the other day, sore throat." I nodded walking past her. I put the folder down on the counter and grabbed a pair of gloves, starting with my right hand.
"I see you like Mario?" I looked at Conner and he nodded with a smile. I put on the left,"so how are you feeling?"
"My throat hurts." His voice was a little scratchy. I grabbed a popsicle stick from the drawer, taking off the paper wrap and putting it in the counter.
"I'm gonna check your throat alright? Open wide and stick your tongue out." I grabbed a mini flashlight from my pocket, placing the popsicle stick down on his tongue and shining the light,"have you looked at his throat?"
"It was red the other day." Mom said waling around to look. His tonsils had some white around and in them,"oh god."
"Mm." I hummed, taking the stick away and placing it on the paper wrap, putting the light back in my pocket,"can you lift your shirt for me so I can see this rash?"
He lifted it and I saw mini hives on his chest, a few bumps spreading onto his lower neck.
"Those hives showed up today."I gave her a nod, motioning for Conner to put his shirt down.
"We'll run some tests. It's  most likely a strep. There a breakout at school?" I picked up the popsicle stick and paper, pressing my door down on the lever of the trash can and dropped it In. The lid closed with a metal thud.
"Not that I'm aware of."   Gave her a nod and heard the door open.  So I looked over, Wilson in the door.
"I need you to take a look at this patient."  He said.
"Excuse me," I pulled the blue gloves off and threw them in the trash,"I'm gonna have a nurse  come and do your strep test, and I'll be back when that's ready."
"And if it strep?" This is definitely her first child.
"Then I'll prescribe Conner  some antibiotics and a lidocaine throat gargle for his throat."  Wilson walked out of the door and stood outside of exam five. I flagged down a nurse and told her what to do as Wilson handed me the blue folder for the patient.
I skimmed it through, his name was Mark, and it seemed like he was a healthy man. Participated in 2ks and 5ks regularly, works at the college teaching anthropology courses.
"Migraine." I said, noting the reason for coming here.
I kept it in hand as I pushed the door open.
The room had the blinds shut, the patient was laying down, his legs hanging off the exam bed, and arm rested on his head covering his eyes.
"Mr.Swan?" I asked gently as Wilson closed the door. He slowly sat up, as if trying to not make his head pound, which didn't work when he winced as he fully sat up,"bad one?"
"Yeah." He lightly chuckled and I handed the folder back to wilson.
"You're gonna hate me for a bit." I grabbed my flashlight from my pocket and held it up,"but I need to check your pupils. Wilson will you open the blinds?"
"This is gonna suck." Mr.Swan closed his eyes as Wilson twisted the blinds open, the room quickly lighting up with natural light.
He soon let his eyes open, blinking a few times. His eyes were a bit red, common with migraines. I clicked the flashlight on, snd gave him a look asking if he was ready, he nodded.
I shined it in his right eyes. The pupil retreated and i moved the light away before doing it again. Same response. I shun it in his left eyes. He had brown eyes so his pupils blended into the corneas in normal light. But, when I shun the light in his eyes, his pupil was dilated, and didn't react.
"Your left pupil is dilated and non reactive." I told him, dropping the flashlight into my pocket. I looked over at Wilson who was already looking at me, leaning against the counter, I looked back to Mr.swan,"have you been training hard lately?  Going through some stress?"
"No." He answered and I nodded, I looked over at Wilson, his arms crossed over his chest," get an MRI, a CT, and some extra strength Advil for while hes waiting. Bring me the scans when they're done, and focus on the left side."
"Of course."
Wilson's pov-
An hour later-
I walked down the Neuro hallway, walking to the conference room. I had the file with the  patients scans in my hand. I know after she left the patients room she picked up another patient and checked in on the kid with the strep when his test came back, but I asked one of her colleges when I left the clinic and they said she was up here. And she was.
She was sitting at the conference table, looking down at a blue folder, her left hand wrapped around a mug. No one else was in there, just her. It'd be easy to close the blinds around the glass walled office, push her up against the table-okay that's enough.
I let out a  breath and walked up to the door and pushed it open. She looked up at me and then down to my hand.
"There's those scans." She out her mug down and reached for them, I handed her the file as I pulled the seat diagonal from her and sat down.
"Mri  had a bit of a waitlist." I said as she opened the file, I finally noticed how nice the baby blue color of her blouse looked one her, I didn't pay attention to it before. Probably because her coat is off.
"I heard some people complaining about it." She looked at the mri scans quickly before moving them to the side, and looking at the Ct scans,"it's definitely a migraine."
"But for four days?" I questioned as she stood up, grabbing the mri scans and the Ct.
She put them up on the light board against the wall. Standing with he hands on her hips, her weight shifted to her right side as she leaned on her leg. I just looked at her as she looked at the scans. Im actually working with her today. Fuck you, House.
"Did you look at these yet?" She looked back at me and I shook my head standing up, taking the clue to come look. She pointed to the CT scan,"a tumor."
"Didn't catch that in the MRI." I crossed my arms over my chest,"so it's pressing against the nerves, causing the headache."
"That thing needs to be out by...I say nine AM tomorrow, that's if it's not brain cancer." We looked at each other and back to the scan.
"I'll get him in to get it biopsied." I took note of the scent of her perfume. A sweet rose scent, and undertone of almond. Light enough to not bother you, yet strong enough to make you near addicted.
"Tonight?"
"Preferably within the next half hour, he's in room Forty two A if you wanna stop by." I said as I slowly back up to the door as she took the scans off the light board,"if I don't see you when he's done then ill come find you."
"Ill see you then Wilson." She smiled as She went back to her seat, putting the scans back in the file. I opened the door and took a left.
Your pov-
Twenty minutes later-
I pressed the down button for the elevator. The numbers quickly changed, coming up from floor two.  The door opened and immediately I saw Dr.House leaning against the back wall.I knew he had a thing about sharing elevators.
"This is perfect, we need to talk." I nodded and walked into the elevator quickly because the door was staring to close.
"This about Mark Swan?" I asked unsurely. Maybe Wilson told him about it. I looked at the buttons and the button to the second floor was already pressed, weird considering he just came from there. I leaned against the right wall.
"No, this is about Wilson." He leaned off the wall and walked to the front of the elevator, repeatedly pressing the door close button when it reached the second floor. My brows furrowed at the action and the elevator resumed going down.
"Okay?"  He leaned against the wall in front of me, his grip on his cane shifting.
"I haven't even talked to you since you've come here, yet everyday I hear about you." I gave him an even bigger look of confusion,"you have Wilson on a string and you don't even know it."
" we've barely even talked."
"The amount you two have is enough for him." The doors opened to the basement,"follow me."
"So Wilson's got a school girl crush on me?" I asked following behind him.
"Oh I wish." He shook his head and took a right going towards the labs,"prefer him blushing then obsessing."
"He's not obsessed." I denied and he stopped walking, turned around and looked at me like I was fucking dumb.
"He buys your lunch often, makes an effort to talk to you whenever he can but won't interrupt you, and all I hear is how much he wants you."  He looked at me for a second, and I took a breath, not realizing I was even holding my breath,"so for my sake...fuck him already."
"What?"
"Are you broken?" He randomly snd promptly asked. I didn't know what he meant,"never mind, surgeons are usually broken in some way."
I went to speak but he turned and walked away, again, so it felt useless to say anything.  I was kind of stunned. I enjoyed seeing Wilson when I did, I enjoyed talking to him, I appreciated that he buys my lunch like three times a week. I'd be lying to myself if I said I didn't feel something for him,
I spun on my heel and walked back towards the elevator, my mind running over what I just heard from House, starting to connect dots.
But broken? I couldn't understand that one.
Wilson's pov-
7pm-
I walked out onto the porch connect to my office, I came out cause I saw House leaning on  the wall next to mine, looking into my office.
"How's your case going?" He asked as the door closed behind me.
"Fine." I answered him,"hell get it removed tomorrow, he's jacked on meds to keep his pain down."
"Lucky fella." He sat on the edge of his wall,"how's the other thing going?"
"Also fine." I sat down on the edge of my wall like he did, my right foot acting as some stability. I was facing the hospital, my back to the scenery.
"No details?" He leaned back a bit but then leaned back In, his forearm sitting on his left thigh.
"So now you want details?" He gave me a slight shrugged and I rolled my eyes with a sigh,"I think we work well together."
"That's it?"
"Yes? What do you want me to say?" I slid off the wall, standing in both feet and looking at him,"that  She looks hot when looking at scans? That The shirt she's wearing fits in all the right spots and don't even get me started on how her ass looks in Her pants?"
"That's more like it," his grip on his cane tightened as he stood up,"I'll be back, don't move."
I watched him walk away as I put my hands on my hips. He walked into his office, and a minute later he came back out with a tan folder.
"She's definitely broken." He handed it over. It's was (y/n)s files.
Your pov-
I walked past diagnostics, seeing the light on in Houses Office. I didn't stop there, I turned down the short hall after it and stopped in front of Wilson's door. The blinds were closed so I Gave it a light knock before pulling it open and letting it close behind me.
"I thought you went home?" He put down what he was looking at to give me his immediate attention.
"No, not yet." I slid off my doctors coat and draped it over the back of the chair in front of his desk, the same one I took a seat in,"what are you doing?"
"Going over a patients medical history." He answered and closed the file,"seeing if they're on any medications or have taken anything. Just trying to find something."
"For Mr.swan?" I questioned and he shook his head, leaning back in his chair,"did you get a consult planned for him?"
"Tomorrow at 8am." I nodded, there was silence between us for a bit but I spoke again,"why'd it take you this long?"
"To do what?" The right corner of his lip curled in a slight smirk.
"To talk to me, get me on your case." I leaned towards the desk.
"I had to make sure it was the right time. You were working the clinic today, i had the same time free, it was perfect." He shrugged his shoulders."plus, I kinda got pushed to do it."
"House?" He raised his brow at me,"we talked in the elevator."
"Really?" He leaned forward, his forearms on the desk,"and what's he tell you?"
"Not much, just how much you talk about me." I stood up a bit to look at the record on his desk, and he didn't try to hide it,"he asked me if I was 'broken'."
"Well, you're not as broken as the others."  The file on his desk was my file. My medical history,"just antidepressants that you've been taking since seventeen."
"And don't forget the bi-weekly therapy." I reminded him.
"Which you haven't been to since you moved here." He noted,"noted that you promptly ended a session and told her you weren't coming back."
"That's how I remember it." I shrugged, for some reason I didn't feel violated that he looked at my records without my permission, and I desperately wanted to know where this was going.
"What made you do That?" He asked getting up from his chair, taking off his doctors coat and placing it on his chair and I leaned back in mine.
"My psych wanted to try a new medication, threw me into a spiral. I'm switched back to lexipro now, as I'm sure you know." Broken, this is what House meant by broken.
He leaned against the edge of his desk and nodded. I kept my eyes up at him, and he kept his eyes down on me.
"You asked me why it took me this long to get you on my case...but you never asked me to get on your case." He crossed his arms over his chest, flattening out the white button up snd his red tie.
"Wasn't really sure what the head of oncology does with his hours. Never was really sure how busy you were." I held my hands in my lap and he chuckled, his normal light chuckle.
"I've always got time for you." He answered,"the doors always open."
"I'm glad I know that now." I smiled, my head turning to look at the door to his offices porch, and then I looked back at him again,"wish I'd known it sooner, instead of eating lunch alone in Neuro, I could've been in here."
"At least now you know." His eyes still haven't left me, I knew there was something else he wanted, I coukd just feel it.
"I've heard stuff about you." He pushed uff the desk and walked over the couch, I turned s bit in the chair to look at him better when he sat down,"got a list of ex wives."
"Only three, they got bored. I have a tendency to go for people on the..unbalanced side do the scale." His eyes finally shifted to the window and back to me.
"So I'm on the unbalanced side?"
"Don't take it offensively, most people are. That includes me as well, believe it or not it's clinic depression." He admitted snd i nodded, taking in the information.
"People who struggle tend to grab onto others who struggle. Makes them feel better watching the other thrive, but then the healer they doesn't thrive." I explained and he nodded to every word, relating to it.
"All three marriages."
"What we're they missing?" I stood up from the chair and walked over the couch, sitting on the right side of him, angled into the corner to look at him better.
"I don't even know. I did my part I know that. People just get bored, they move on while being committed."
"Because you healed them."
"So what I'm getting is that I can't heal you, so that means that you're a top choice?" He twisted s bit to look at me better, his right arm resting on top of the head of the couch.
"I guess?"
"Because that what I see. A top choice." His eyes trailed down and back up my body in the last part. I felt my pulse being harder, more prominent in my neck and chest. All that from his look,"you're smart, you walk and talk with confidence. By what I've heard you don't second guess yourself, not in s risky way."
"Because I know what I'm doing, the one thing I don't know what I'm doing...is how I'm affecting you." He looked away from me, his eyes at his desk,"because House said that I should fuck you for his own sake."
"Did he really?" He looked back st me quickly and I nodded,"cats out of that bag now."
"What do you think about me?" I moved closer to him.
"You want the truth?" His brow cocked a bit and I nodded,"I can't help but imagine what you would look like bent over a desk or a table any time I see you at one. Your clothing always fits in the right spots, makes it hard to ignore you in the hallway, I simply can't, and after you leave my presence you're in my mind till I see you again."
"Do I keep you up at night?"
"You have no clue." His left hand sat on my thigh now, that's how close I was to him,"crazy dreams about you."
"Like what?" I wanted to pick his brain apart. He didn't answer, but he was seeing the dreams in his head,"tell me."
"How badly I wanna fuck a kid into you." If I was gonna have anyone's children, it might as well be his, and that sentence went right to my pussy.
"I'm not carrying a child without a ring and a marriage license." I marked and he nodded and quickly responded.
"I get easily get you one tomorrow."
"Make it six months, minimum." I took the chance to lean forward, and catch his lips to mine which he quickly reacted to. He held my thigh tighter, the hand that was on the head of the couch came to hold my jaw. I grabbed his tie, pulling him closer.
His lips were soft and near addictive, and he moved them with mine, his grip holding my jaw a bit harder along the edge of it by my ear.
I leaned back, taking him down to the couch with me his hand sliding up my thigh to my hip, his right knee in between my legs. His right leg and my left leg both off the couch. In seconds it was heated, our tongues clashing against each other languidly, I loosened his tie and started undoing the buttons to his white shirt. Taking my time, feeling each button, my brain obsessed with his lips and tongue at the moment. He pulled away from me, his lips a bit more red then before and he slid his tie off over his head, dropping it to the coffee table. I finished off with his last button and he slid it off, letting it hit the floor. He looked good with his clothes on, and he looks even better when they start to come off.
Wilson's pov-
A little bit later-
"Jesus."I sighed out,, my head resting on the head of the couch, my hand in (y/n)s hair, one holding into the arm of the couch  as she held my thighs. Her head bobbing up and down as she sucked my cock. Mouth of an absolute Angel, everything I thought it'd be. My top teeth bit down and dragged lightly over my bottom lip, letting it go as I exhaled.
I looked at down at her, meeting her gorgeous (e/c) eyes looking up at me through her lashes. She still had her panties on, light blue like the shirt, lace trim on the upper and bottom hems. She looked gorgeous on her knees, the way her back arched slightly, and when's she's sitting up, not sucking my dick, her waist has the perfect curve to it, her thighs plush, and her breasts looked absolutely fantastic.
I felt my right lip rug up into a smirk, the tip of my tongue brushed under my top teeth and she closed her eyes. I let my head fall back as she took me deeper in her throat the next time she bobbed down, he tongue running flat along the underside of my cock and I felt it tenfold. My fist held her hair tighter, just holding. I'd be crazy to try and take over what she was doing. Her tongue slid up my base, swirling around my tip, and sliding back down my base, her lips still sucked around me.
I took a deep breath as my abs  tightened, I let out a groan and a "fuck" followed after it. I felt her hands slide down my thigh and leave once it reached my knee. She sucked harder, which i didn't know was possible, and she hummed around me.
"My god." My hips rose a bit , but not much, just a reaction from the deep breath I took. Her hand never returned to me so I opened my eyes and looked down at her. Her hand was inside her panties, rubbing her clit slowly, her hips rocking lightly.
I couldn't stop looking at her, feeling my cock Twitch against her tongue and the inside of her cheeks. My breathing became deeper and faster, my eyes closing on their own. I could feel the high in my head as my head fel back again. Her hand left my thigh and gripped the base of my cock, Pumping it as she focused on the upper half.
"Just like that." I groaned out, and with a few more pumps I was shooting into her mouth, she kept sucking and pumping, as groaned out her name, my hips bucking up slightly. My whole abdomen tightening as I came. She swallowed around me before popping off, her hand slowing  down to a stop shortly after.
I left out a sharp sigh as my hand released her hair, I looked down at her again, her lips wet and puffy, her eyes glossed over, her cheeks blushed, her chest rising and falling as she caught her breath.
"You are..fucking amazing." I chuckled out and she smiled, putting a hand on my thigh to help her stand up. I leaned forward to grab her hips to help stabilize her.
"And you have a good diet." She pointed out, I let my fingers hook into her panties, and I pulled them down her legs. She took over and then kicked them away to join the rest of our clothes on the floor. She stood up straight, looking down at me,"how do you want me Wilson?"
"Get on the couch." I could feel myself getting harder again as I stood up. She knelt down on the couch, her forearms on the head of it, sticking her out at me as she shifted to widen her legs.
I let my hands slide down her waist, along her hips, and she rested her left cheek on her forearm as she looked back at me. I took hold of my cock, stroking it from base to tip.
"Fuck me Wilson." Her voice was breathy and needy, sounding like a whisper but it wasn't. I took hold on her left thigh and pulled her closer to me, running my tip in between her wet folds savoring the feeling of it. Swiping it against her clit, gaining a whimper from her as she looked forward, as much as she could with the wall in front of her. I circled my tip around her soaked core, before sliding my tip in. I groaned and she let out a moan at the same time, she was tight. Just perfect though.
I slid in a bit more and she pushed back to me, so I pushed my full length into her. Her walls squeezing me as she pushed her chest into the couch. A shaky moan that came from her throat, but never left her mouth came from her. I held onto her waist as I slowly pulled back from her before pushing back in, feeling the resistance of her walls yet ease because of how wet she was.  Her forehead sat on the back of her hands, soft moans leaving her lips each time my tip came back to hit that soft spot in her.
"Please go faster." She breathed out, so I did. Suck my dick like that and I'm gonna do anything you say. I started building up a rhythm, pulling out to my tip and rocking my hips back in to her deeply, my hip bones pressing against her ass,"ohmygod."
"You feel so fucking good." I groaned out, leaning down press a kiss on her shoulder,"so good."

Your pov-
Wilson was pounding up into me, a hand holding onto my throat, to keep my shoulder blades against his chest, I was holding onto that's hands wrist, keeping him there. I reached behind me, my nails digging into his shoulder, his other hands rubbing my clit. My moans were uncontrollable due to how deep be fucking into me, his tip rubbing against my gspot without missing a beat. My head head felt dizzy as it fell against his shoulder, my abdomen muscles were tightening and loosening, nearly spasming. My thigh muscles twitching from the constant harsh attention to clit, setting my nerves on fire.   My walls fluttered around him, his groans filled my ear, along with the shirt praises he whispered to me. Small kisses under my ear and side of my neck.
"Gonna cum." I shuddered into him his hand leaving my neck to hold firmly onto my ribs, I didn't let go, my grip tightening around his bone. Electric spiked up my spine, my walls convulsing around him, and i felt his cock Twitch. Once. Then twice.
"Just a little bit longer."  So I waited, my brain focusing on how his fingers moved without stopping or faltering. How he held me closer to his chest.
"Wilson-"
"Let go." He said, and I did. Crumbling in his grasp as my orgasm broke through me, kept kept fucking into me. My cum coating his cock and the inside of my thighs. A "fuck me" came out of his mouth before he released into me, he kept pounding up into me, but his hand left my clit and held onto my waist.  My back was hot against his chest, my hairline dampened, my breathing fast, same as him.
He slowed down, and I let go of his shoulder and wrist. he leaned forward and I grabbed the top of the couch, both his hands sitting on my hips, holding my lower half up as my upper half relaxed onto the couch.
"Holy fucking shit." I breathed out, my voice higher in pitch.
"Amen." He breathed out. Slowly pulling out of me, feeling his cum drip down the inside of my legs as he let my hips go. My lower half sitting down. I felt the couch dip next to me as he fell into the couch, a hand on my back rubbing up and down my spine. I took deep breaths and moved my head to rest my cheek on my hands and look at him for the first time in..I don't know how long it's been, all I can count it by was how that was the second time I came.
He had a blissed smirk on his face looking at me with awe.
"What time do you get out tomorrow? I could take you out for dinner." He offered I smiled.
"I get off at five." I answered and he nodded sharply.
"I'll make reservations in the morning." I moved to sit down properly on the couch, leaning against him as his arm wrapped over my shoulders.
We talked for a bit as we came down, before being interrupted by a knock at the door.
"Busy!" Wilson called out looking over at  the door.
"Sounds like it!"  It was house,"these walls are very thin by the way!"
"Noted House!" He yelled back, he waited a second for a response but it didn't come.
"Should be interesting for you tomorrow." I giggled and he shook his head.
"Never gonna hear the end of it, but at least i proved him wrong. He didn't think you had any interest in me."
"He should stick to medical diagnosis's, not social ones." I sat forward, his hand falling from my right shoulder,"I have to go, got a consult for a tumor removal at eight AM."
"At least-" I cut him off begire he could offer to clean me up. How charming.
"Clean up your couch, ill be fine." I picked up my blue panties as I stood up, slipping them into my legs and pulling them up.
"I can walk you to your car." He sat forward, I picked up his pants and boxers and handed them to him, his shirt was somewhere else in the room.
"How charming." I put my button up on the arm of the couch as I stood up with my pants starting to put them on,"you can walk me to elevator."
"Sounds great."

It was an understatement to say Logan Howlett was good-looking. Every day waking up next to him was like an episode of America's, or well, Canada's next top model.
If there was a god up there, you wanted to thank them for whatever was in Logan's genetics, Even now, with messy hair and half awake, he was giving you butterflies.
"Quit starin', bub." Logan huffs as he brushes by you to get to the coffee maker.
You swore he was some alien from another planet. Seriously, how was he this hot?
Even at work, you found yourself daydreaming about him.
"Y'know, you're not paid to slack off." Matt huffed as he rearranged a shelf that some kid had messed up.
Your coworker's words had you groaning in annoyance. How could he be so inconsiderate? Interrupting your thoughts like that?
"The shop is literally empty!" You huff looking around at the little bookstore.
"Well, if I don't have a hot boyfriend to dream about, I don't see why you should get the privilege to." Matt grinned
"Whatever." You roll your eyes, "Not my fault he's the whole package."
Nearly a week had passed since you had gotten to have real alone time with Logan. Between work, running Laura around, and Wade's impromptu visits to your shared apartment, you and Logan hadn't seen much of each other.
Normally, you'd be able to accept this, after all life was busy. But, today it was like someone had lit a fire under you and the only way to put it out was with Logan in between your thighs.
Perhaps it was just because it was ovulation week, but all you could think about was getting home and pulling Logan into bed with you. God, you missed him so much...you were a ball of hormones and want as your mind wandered, imagining little versions of you and Logan running around the apartment, terrorizing Laura and Wade when he visited.
Friday night was often filled with stress, usually, you were sitting on uncomfortable metal bleachers, watching Laura's soccer games. But, this week was different, the game had been rained out and Laura had convinced you and Logan that she could sleep over at a friend's house.
The soft clink of keys had you turning towards the front door. Finally, Logan was home.
"I'm back." He announced as your cat, Jingle jumped from your lap to greet the man.
"Missed you." You smile as he plops down on the couch next to you, pressing his lips to your forehead briefly
"Wade kept me out longer than I thought he would." Logan says, "His fucking mouth is going to get him killed one day."
"If he could die." You snort
Logan lets out an amused scoff as he pulls you into his lap, eagerly pressing a kiss to your neck. His hands are a welcome weight as they settle on your hips, squeezing at the soft flesh there.
"Laura at her friends?" He asks with a coy smile
"Mmhm. Dropped her off myself." You say, wiggling your hips a bit in anticipation.
" Gonna take a shower," He says, "Meet me in the bedroom?"
You giggle and smile at the mischievous look on his face.
"Make it quick." You press a kiss on his cheek.
The scent of Logan's shampoo wafts down the hallway as you shimmy into something you've been keeping a secret for a few weeks. A lacy blue babydoll lingerie dress sits on your body as you quickly step into the matching thong it came with. You stand in front of the full-length mirror Logan hung on the back of the door to your shared bedroom.
You mess around with your hair, trying to find the perfect look, and then swipe on a strawberry-flavored gloss, one of Logan's favorites. You can't help but feel a bit giddy as you take in your appearance. Messy hair, shiny lips, and the perfect little number on your frame, you're sure to drive Logan even crazier than he already was for you.
The squeaking of the bathroom door's hinge's have you whirling around, unsure if you should lay on the bed, or perhaps sit on the edge.
You don't get a chance to make up your mind as Logan pushes the bedroom door open. A deep green towel is wrapped around his waist as your eyes greedily roam his perfect torso.
Logan sucks in a breath as he crosses the room to be closer to you. A big hand runs up your side, ghosting over your chest and then back down to land on your waist.
"Where'd you get this?" He smiles, eyes anywhere but your face.
"bought it a couple of weeks ago." You softly say, suddenly shy under his gaze, "Do you like it?"
"Love it." Logan smiles, meeting your eyes and letting the towel drop from his waist.
You let him push you down into the soft sheets of your shared bed, moaning a bit when his hands begin to wander.
Warm lips press against your neck, and then your collarbone, and then they begin to trail down to your chest. Logan's hands push the thin straps of your dress off your shoulders and his mouth begins to softly tease one of your nipples while one hand delivers feather-light touches over your panties to the mess between your legs.
Logan's mouth leaves your chest as he pulls you to the edge of the bed, letting his knees hit the ground as he gently pushes your legs apart. His hands pull your panties down and you hear a deep groan when the wet fabric finally hits the floor.
"Missed her," Logan says, pressing a miss to your upper thigh
You roll your eyes at his comment, he had recently taken up talking to your cunt, referring to it as her.
A loud moan escapes your lips as he buries his head between your thighs, licking up your slit and gently sucking at your clit.
"Ugh, Logan..." You groan, you're extra sensitive after a week apart.
Your hips jump off the bed when he slips two fingers into you, pressing at the spongy part that only he can reach.
"Fuck-" You gasp as he sucks at your clit again, this time rougher than the last.
Finally, this is what you needed, you groaned again as you pictured what was coming next. Your stomach tightened with need for release as your cunt wept and ruined the sheets below you. You were desperate for his cock, craving the way you knew it'd stretch you out, putting an end to the past week of torture.
Logan pushes your hips back down as your body goes taut and your orgasm takes over. Your hands tug at his soft brown hair as your chest heaves.
Logan presses a kiss to your clit one more time before sitting back, his eyes looking up at you.
"Not bad." You sigh, a dopey smile on your face
Logan lets out a scoff as he stands up and pulls you further up the bed with him. You greedily run your hands down his chest, admiring the way his muscles tense as your fingertips tease them.
"Greedy," Logan comments as you pull him on top of you
"Can't help it." You sigh, "I've missed you."
"I can tell. She's like a fucking waterpark down there." Logan laughs as he presses a kiss to your forehead.
"You're gross." You comment as you feel your face heat up
"Only for you," Logan says
You suppose you might've had a clever retort but the push of the cock that you had craved all week long has you shutting your mouth.
Logan's hips gently meet yours as he sets a slow pace. A quiet moan leaves his lips as you wiggle below him. The stretch of him is as good as you remember but you need more.
"Harder." You groan as he looks down at you
"Don't wanna hurt you, sweetheart," Logan says worriedly
You a frustrated breath tumbles from your lips as you wiggle your hips unhappily. Logan was always so considerate and gentle with you. Always taking his time and making sure you were okay. He was truly ethereal in the bedroom. But, right now he was driving you nuts.
Logan lets out a loud oof as you push him off you and down onto the bed. You can tell he's confused as you settle yourself into his lap and reach into the bedside drawer.
A smirk plays on his lips as a pair of fuzzy pink handcuffs come into his line of sight.
"Those for you?" He asks, "Want me to tie you up, bub?"
You roll your eyes as he plays with the thin strap of the lingerie that had fallen off your shoulders.
"They're for you." You smile as you grab his wrists, pulling them behind his head so he's stuck to your bed frame.
Logan's smile falters a bit but he lets you maneuver his arms anyway, "I can break these, easily."
"But you won't." You whisper into his ear and bite at the flesh there
"But I won't." Logan softly says, his eyes following your figure
Warm butterflies swim in his stomach as you line him up with your cunt again. He's never tried this position with you before, fearing it might be too much, after all, he wasn't the smallest guy around.
A soft groan leaves your lips as you sink down on him again. He feels your nails dig into his shoulders a bit as his head falls back a bit.
"New position?" He asks, regaining his confidence when he sees you're not in pain
"Mmhm." You say, focused on moving your hips
Logan's eyes widen as he lets you take what you want. The soft fuzz on the handcuffs tickles his skin as he itches to run his hands up and down your pretty body.
"Careful," He cautions you as you roughly move your hips above him
"Logan..." You groan, your eyes squeezed shut
He groans, as your pace quickens. The lust that clouds his brain is a tough fog that he can barely think through. He's worried that you're going to hurt yourself like this.
"M-Missed you so much." You confess, "Been thinking about you all damn week."
"Yeah?" Logan smiles and presses a kiss to your collarbone
"Yeah..." You sigh, "I've been so fucking horny lately."
Perhaps it's your admission or the lacy little thing that has yet to come off your body, or the new position, Logan's not entirely sure, but something in him snaps. Perhaps he shouldn't have been so worried about treating you like some delicate little flower.
The handcuffs don't stand a chance as he frees himself, from them. His hands come up and he quickly pulls out of you. A loud frustrated whine leaves your lips as you let him manhandle you.
"Logan I want to-"
He cuts you off as he spins you around and presses your chest down into the bed. You can feel the way he towers over you as he palms your ass, clearly liking the way it's on display for him.
"Have you ever tried this one?" His deep voice crowds your mind as he pushes into you again. A long moan leaves your lips as he chuckles at your submission.
A wonton cry leaves your lips below him as he finally moves his hips, cock hitting all the right places inside you.
Finally, you were getting what you wanted.
Not me disappearing into the void and then coming back and deciding it's the perfect time to write a bunch of smut...

"heartbreak is one thing, my egos another- i beg you don't embarass me motherfucker.."- please x3, sabrina carpenter
Tumblr media
“Please Logan. Please, please, please just behave tonight.” you begged, pouting your lip as you gazed up at him with puppy dog eyes. It wasn’t often you had to beg Logan for anything.
He always gave you everything you wanted, no questions asked.
New purse? Chanell bag was waiting for you on the table when you arrived home. New shoes? He helped you pick them out, making you walk over to him seductively before perching you on his lap.
Anything you wanted, you got. Except for Logan behaving himself.
The older man was not known for being… caring.
To anyone but you, of course.
Where the sunshine lingered over your head like a halo, his stormcloud trailed behind at an arm's distance.
He was jealous… no, possessive. If a man stared at you for a second too long, he was no longer a man, but a boy sprawled on the ground with blood gushing out of his nose, ears and eyes. A violent, cold shouldered man with a harsh military past, but to you he would give the world on a silver platter if he could.
Which is exactly why he was dressing up for an event he very much did not want to go to- for your sake.
You stood on your tiptoes to adjust his tie, smoothing out his crisp, white undershirt that highlighted his strong arms. You wanted to kiss them.
“That's all I’m askin baby.” you pouted again, placing a gentle kiss to his neck as he bent down to your level.
“Now would I ever embarrass my girl?” he asked teasingly, brushing a warm, calloused thumb across your cheek, careful not to mess up the makeup you had so delicatly applied sitting on the bathroom vanity for hours.
“Hmm. Well sometimes someone gets a lil possessive..” you trailed on, his eyebrow cocking in amusement.
“AmI not allowed to protect my princess? There's so many terrible men out there you know baby.. That just wanna take my girl away from me.” he mocked your pout, guiding you around to face the standing mirror adorned with little lights around it, to “highlight your beauty” he had told you.
They glowed softly, pulsing against your skin as he leaned down, placing a kiss on your neck- the same place you had to him- only his tugged at your skin, just a little longer.
“And we don't want that now do we?”
Your panties damped at his condescending tone. God, why did his posessiveness turn you on so fucking much? You were adding fuel to the fire.
“No, but it's just a gala Lo. I’m sure it’ll be okay.”
“I’m always protecting my girl.” he snarled, hands gripping your hips, giving them a squeeze over your velvet red dress, draping across your body like a Greek goddess. It was one of Logans favourites. Of course, he said that about everything you did, and did not wear.
You thought it was fitting for the event, supposedly just a “mingle and drink” was what Charles had said. A good way to connect with other mutants from other parts of the world. It was important to him, so you wanted to make sure it ran as smoothly as possible.
“You look so fucking beautiful. Fuck.” he murmured, running his hands up and down your body, tickling your skin. “You make me think such dirty, dirty thoughts princess.”
“Oops.” you giggled, feeling a bulge against your backside, rubbing against the fabric. You hated to leave him high and dry, but Charles would kill you if you were late.
It would cause Logan to be on edge even more so then he was, but if he had it his way, you’d constantly stay in his bed.
“Now we gotta go. Oh- and, no guns, no claws.” you scolded, shimming out of his grasp to snatch up your handbag, stuffing the contents that had spilled out back inside messley.
“Hgmp.” he grumbled, reaching for your outstretched hand, trailing after you to walk into his own personal internal hell. If it meant he could support you, and even just see you- he would do it.
Not without a slight fuss though, to make you pity him.
“Don’t think about it Lo. Charles wants this to go perfectly… and I’m just-”
“Hey. hey, I’m just teasing you baby. I promise, I’ll be on my best behaviour, I wanna be there for you. But if any man tries it…” He stopped you, turning you back against the doorframe, his palm in your cheek, stroking it lovingly.
You met his eyes, soaking in their gentle gaze he only revealed to you, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. “You just want an excuse to show off your hot date.” you teased, smiling softly.
He laughed, squeezing you close to his chest. You breathed in his cologne, smelling strongly of whisky and pine needles. It made you drunk, intoxicating you like white wine.
“You caught me there.”
---------------------------------------------
“Fashionably late” is what Logan called it, when you strolled into the ballroom of the old, castle-like manor, nearly twenty minutes past. You had urged him to pick up the pace, but he had distracted you with his lips whenever you tried to protest.
He had listened to you however, when you begged him not to mess up your makeup, only tugging on your lip with teeth instead of smearing it with his thumb.
Smiling meekly at Charles with your hair slightly out of place, you wiggled your way through the crowd, familiar and unfamiliar faces poking out at you.
You waved to Storm, smiling as she flirted with a mutant from out of town. Soaking in her shimmering silver dress, you gave her a big thumbs up, mouthing “you look so good!”, earning a stifled giggle from her as the man continued his conversation.
Logan watched you like a hawk from the side of the room, acting as a bodyguard. He seemed to sneer at anyone who you didn’t know get too close to you, even if they were just passing by.
He had showed up for you, so you let him sulk. It was the least you could do. You paid him no mind, occasionally looking over to see him nursing a whisky on the rocks in a fancy glass, adjusting his jacket as Rouge talked to him.
Giving him a little soft wave, you turned, bumping right into an unfamiliar face.
“Oh, my apologies- I should’ve watched where I was going.” you reassured, giving a curt nod and smile. You took a step, Charles popping into view- only an arms reach away.
“Hey, no worries. I hope I didn’t mess up your beautiful dress.” the stranger smiled, eyeing you up. It made you shiver in discomfort. “Oh thank you.” You tried to be as polite as you could be- hoping the conversation would end as quickly as it started.
“What’s your name?” he asked. “Oh- uh… Y/N.”
“Nice to meet you, I’m-”
“She doesn't care who you are.” a low voice growled, Logan slipping in front of you, shielding you from the stranger.
You could see the back muscles ripple through his tight jacket, threatening to tear in two. He must have sniffed out your immediate discomfort. You were grateful for it, as the hungry stares the man gave you made you uneasy.
“Woah bud. Chill out, I’m just saying hello.”
“You’re making my girl uncomfortable. And anyone who makes my girl-” he emphasised those two words. “-uncomfortable, gets fucked up.”
You felt Charles stare at the back of your head, and you frantically tried to pull him back before he threw a punch and made a scene. “Lo- let's go, lets just let it go.”
He snarled at the man, making him tremble slightly, trying to hide his discomfort the same way you had just done for him.
“I would listen to your girl.” he mocked.
“You shut the fuck up.” you snapped, stepping out from behind your guard dog of a boyfriend- finger right in his face. “I shouldn't even give you the time of day, you perv. I know what you're thinking about- and I would never be with you. Never in a million years.” you spat, turning sharply on your heel, not looking to see if anyone followed.
You felt heads turn as you strutted out of the ballroom, Charles being one of them.
He was a pervert. I’m getting some air. You telepathically told Charles, stomping towards an empty office down the hall- letting the door slam behind you. I understand, and I’ll take care of him, if Logan doesn't before me. He murmured, voice slipping from your mind as quick as it came.
You leaned against the mahogany desk, taking a deep breath. Trying to compose yourself, you unzipped your dress just a tad, to give yourself more room to take deeper breaths.
A moment later, you heard loud footsteps stomp down the hall, Logan appearing from behind the closed door he opened. His eyes glinted with anger- a hunger and possessiveness that had you squeezing your thighs together.
The lock clicked, and within two strides he towered in front of you. “Lo-”
He kissed you so hard you swore you tasted coppery blood coat your bottom lip, and you moaned into his mouth. Melting into his touch, his hands held your neck- not letting you go anywhere, before hiking you up in his arms.
Office supplies were pushed to the side clattering to the ground as you were perched at the edge of the desk, legs wrapping around Logan tightly.
“Youre so fucking hot when you get like that. So worked up, letting that lil cat out to scratch.”
He growled in your mouth, hand slipping down to grab your ass, smacking it hard. “Mghm f-fuck Logan, he just made me so angry… and you protected me like always..”
“That man is not gonna make it tomorrow when I’m done with him.” he promised, and you felt heat rise in your cheeks at his claims.
“You’re mine. Mine, and fuck I’m gonna make sure you leave this room with everyone knowing that princess.”
“Lo- need y’so bad..” you whined, hand slipping down his chest to tug at the button of his dress pants. His bulge taunted you, and a hiss escaped from his lips as you grazed it through the fabric.
“Ya? You need me baby? Come and take me then, my big, strong girl.” he murmured, letting you pull him out of his confinements, the sheer size making your mouth water.
You never got tired of him, never got over how big he was. You struggled to tug your dress fully off, and he chuckled at the sight of you.
“So desperate hm? Need help?”
“N-no.” you mumbled, finally finding a way to shimmy it down. You wasted no time with the extras- simply pulling your thong to the side, as you guided him near your entrance.
“Your hands are so tiny on my cock baby. All of you is just so tiny, you need to be protected, hm?”
You nodded mindlessly, sighing in relief as he slid his cock up and down through your soaked folds, before sliding in and hitting home. Your mouth popped open with an O- as he never fully slid fully in without guiding it in slowly first.
He was needy tonight. You both were.
“Oh fuck baby. Fuck.”
You squeezed your legs around his waist, pulling him in tighter, trying your best to fuck yourself on him. It wasn't as good as what he did to you. You needed him.
“You poor lil thing. You need some help, you need daddy to fuck ya princess?”
You nodded, moaning as his hand found its way around your neck, squeezing softly as he pulled out, then back home- hips snapping at a rough pace that had you seeing stars.
You couldn't help but let the noises escape you- trying so hard to stay quiet but they slipped out, mixing with the slap of skin.
“Yeah let it all out baby. Let them all hear how good I fuck you. How you're mine, and no one else's.”
You looked into his eyes widely, as they started to fog over with pure pleasure. He hugged your gummy walls like a glove, his grunts and praises spurring you on. You couldn't help but look down, watching the way his cock slid deep inside you, the outline poking through your stomach.
“Lo- you’re so big.”
“And you're so tight, baby. You like lookin at how well you take me? Look over there.” he nodded his head over to the right, where a full length mirror stood.
You turned your head, watching as he rammed into you, pushing your legs up across his big, beefy shoulders, bending you to his will. His eyes met yours in the reflection, a cruel smirk forming on his lips as you gasped and whimmered his name as he fucked you.
“Such a pretty princess.” he whispered, hoping everyone could hear you.
Knowing those noises you made were because him- for him, and only him.

Tumblr media
logan had been on edge for weeks now. everything seemed to be going wrong, one thing after another. his mission plan was falling apart, charles was breathing down his neck, and it felt like no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t catch a break. the stress was eating at him, wearing him down little by little until it felt like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.
you’d noticed the change in him - how he seemed quieter, more distant, his temper flaring up over the smallest things. you tried to help where you could, offering him a shoulder to lean on, giving him space when he needed it, but nothing seemed to work. logan was like a tightly wound spring, ready to snap at any moment.
today had been the worst of all. logan’s day started with a series of frustrating conversations that left him feeling like he was running in circles. every task seemed to come with a new problem, and by the time he left work, he was fuming. his hands clenched into fists as he drove home, his mind racing with everything that had gone wrong. all he wanted was to come home, find some peace, and forget about the day. but even that was too much to ask.
when he walked through the door, he immediately noticed that the kitchen was spotless - so spotless, in fact, that his papers, the ones he’d left scattered across the table, were missing. he felt a surge of irritation. you had been on a cleaning spree, trying to make the house more comfortable for him, but in doing so, you’d moved around some of his blueprints. the ones he needed. the ones he hadn’t had time to organise properly.
“where are my papers?” logan’s voice was tight as he scanned the kitchen, looking for the documents that were now nowhere to be seen.
you looked up from where you were organising the bookshelf, smiling a little at him. “oh, i moved them to the study so you’d have more space. i thought - ”
“you thought?” logan cut you off, his voice rising. “why would you move my stuff without asking me?”
you blinked, caught off guard by the sharpness in his tone. “i just wanted to help. i know you’ve been stressed, and i thought having a clean space might - ”
“a clean space?” logan’s laugh was harsh, bitter. “i don’t need a clean space, i need my work to not be messed with! do you have any idea how much shit i’ve been dealing with lately? and now this - this is the last thing i need!”
he was shouting now, the frustration of the past few weeks boiling over. every little thing that had gone wrong, every setback, every sleepless night - it all came out in a torrent of anger directed at you.
“logan, i didn’t mean to make things worse…” you tried to explain, but he wasn’t listening. he was too far gone, too wrapped up in his own frustration to hear the hurt in your voice.
“you never think, do you? you just do whatever you want, and now i’m the one who has to deal with the consequences! i’m sick of this! i’m sick of everything always going wrong, and now you’re just adding to it!”
his words cut through you like a knife. you hadn’t meant to make things worse, you
were just trying to help, but the way he was yelling at you, the anger in his voice - it was too much. your chest tightened, and you could feel the tears welling up in your eyes, but you tried to hold them back.
“logan, please… i’m sorry, i just wanted to make things easier for you,” you said, your voice trembling.
“easier? easier for me?” he snapped, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “well, congratulations, because you’ve done the exact opposite! now i have to waste even more time finding everything you moved, and i’m already drowning here!”
the tears you’d been trying so hard to hold back finally spilled over. you tried to wipe them away quickly, but logan was still shouting, too caught up in his own anger to notice.
“why can’t you just leave things the way they are? why do you always have to interfere? it’s like you don’t even care how much pressure i’m under! do you even care about anything besides what you want?”
his words were like a punch to the gut, and you couldn’t hold it in any longer. a sob escaped your lips, loud and broken, and it stopped logan in his tracks. the sound cut through his anger like a knife, and suddenly, the room was silent.
he stared at you, his chest heaving as he tried to process what was happening. you were crying - no, you were sobbing, and it hit him like a ton of bricks. all the anger, all the frustration that had been driving him just moments ago, drained away, leaving him feeling hollow and ashamed.
“y/n…” he started, his voice shaky now, all the sharp edges gone. “shit, i didn’t mean…”
but you couldn’t stop crying, the weight of his words crashing down on you all at once. you hadn’t realised just how much stress he’d been under, how deeply it had been affecting him, and now it felt like you’d only made everything worse.
logan stepped closer, his hands reaching out, but he hesitated. he didn’t know how to fix this - how to take back the things he’d said, the hurt he’d caused. “hey, hey… please don’t cry. i’m sorry, i didn’t… i didn’t mean any of that.”
his hands were trembling as he finally pulled you into his arms, holding you tightly against his chest. he could feel your sobs wracking your body, and it broke something inside him. how could he have been so blind? so stupid?
“i’m so fucking sorry,” he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. “i’m an idiot, and i let all this shit get to me, and i took it out on you. you didn’t deserve any of that.”
you clung to him, your fingers digging into his shirt as you tried to calm down. his arms were strong around you, holding you like you were the only thing anchoring him to reality. and maybe, in that moment, you were.
logan pressed his lips to the top of your head, murmuring apologies over and over, his voice thick with regret. “i’m sorry… i’m so fucking sorry… please, y/n, don’t cry. i hate seeing you like this.”
you wanted to tell him that it was okay, that you understood, but the words were stuck in your throat. instead, you just held onto him, letting him hold you, letting his presence calm the storm inside you.
it took a while for your sobs to finally subside, and when they did, you felt exhausted, like all the fight had been drained out of you. but logan didn’t let go - he just held you tighter, like he was afraid that if he let go, you’d slip away.
“i’ve been such a fucking mess lately,” he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. “everything’s been going wrong, and i didn’t know how to deal with it. i’ve been pushing you away, taking it out on you, and that’s not fair. it’s not fair to you, and it’s not fair to us.”
you nodded against his chest, your fingers still gripping his shirt. “i just wanted to help… i hate seeing you like this. it feels like you’re slipping away from me, and i don’t know how to bring you back.”
logan’s heart clenched at your words. he hadn’t realised how much his behaviour had been affecting you, how much you’d been carrying on your own. he felt a fresh wave of guilt wash over him, and he held you even tighter.
“y’re not losing me,” he said firmly, pulling back just enough to look into your eyes. his thumb gently brushed away the tears on your cheeks, his touch soft, careful. “i promise you, you’re not losing me. i’ve just been so caught up in my own shit that i forgot what really matters.”
you searched his eyes, looking for the truth in his words, and you found it there - clear and unwavering. he was still here, still the man you loved, even if he’d lost his way for a while.
“i’m not going anywhere,” he continued, his voice steady now, a promise in every word. “we’re going to get through this. together.”
you nodded, a small, shaky smile forming on your lips. “yeah.”
logan leaned in, pressing his forehead against yours, his breath warm against your skin. “i love you,” he whispered, his voice filled with all the emotion he’d been holding back for weeks. “i love you so much. and i’m going to do better, i can fuckin’ promise you that, bub.”
you closed your eyes, letting his words wash over you, feeling the truth in them. you knew it wouldn’t be easy - logan was stubborn, and he had a lot to work through - but you also knew that he meant every word. he loved you, and that was enough.
“i love you too,” you whispered back, your voice soft but steady.
logan’s lips found yours in a gentle, lingering kiss, one that spoke of apologies and promises of love and commitment. when he pulled back, he rested his forehead against yours again, his eyes closed as he took a deep breath. logan smiled - a real, genuine smile that you hadn’t seen in what felt like forever.
the two of you stayed like that for a while longer, just holding each other, finding comfort in the closeness. the argument, the hurt, the tears - they were all still there, but they didn’t feel as overwhelming now. you both knew there was work to be done, but for the first time in weeks, it felt like you were on the same page, like you could actually do this.
when logan finally pulled away, he took your hand and led you to the couch, where the two of you sat down together. his arm wrapped around your shoulders, pulling you close to his side, and you leaned into him, resting your head on his chest.
“tell me what’s been going on,” you said softly, wanting to understand what had been eating at him for so long. “i want to help, logan. i don’t want you to go through this alone.”
logan let out a long sigh, running a hand through his hair as he tried to find the right words. “it’s just been one thing after another. work’s been a nightmare. nothing’s going right, and scott is on my case constantly. every day, it feels like i’m just… barely keeping my head above water. and then i come home, and i don’t want to burden you with all of this, but it’s just… it’s been too much.”
you listened quietly, letting him talk, letting him get it all out. you could hear the exhaustion in his voice, the frustration, the weight he’d been carrying for so long. it broke your heart to know he’d been dealing with all of this on his own, and you hadn’t even realised how bad it had gotten.
“logan,” you said softly when he finished, your voice filled with compassion. “you don’t have to carry this by yourself. i’m here, and i want to help. we’re a team, remember?”
logan nodded, his eyes closing as he rested his head back against the couch. “i know. i just… i didn’t want to unload all of this on you. i didn’t want to worry you.”
“but i was already worried,” you pointed out gently. “because i could see that something was wrong, and you weren’t talking to me about it. that’s what scared me the most - not knowing what was going on in your head.”
logan’s grip on your hand tightened, and he turned to look at you, his eyes filled with regret. “i’m sorry. i didn’t mean to shut you out. i just… didn’t know how to talk about it. i didn’t want you to see me like this.”
“logan, you don’t have to be perfect,” you said, your voice firm but loving. “i love you for who you are, flaws and all. and if you’re struggling, i want to know. i want to be there for you, just like you’ve always been there for me.”
logan’s expression softened, and he leaned in to press a kiss to your forehead. “i don’t deserve you,” he murmured against your skin. “but i’m so fucking grateful that you’re here.”
you smiled, wrapping your arms around him and holding him close. “you deserve all the love in the world, logan. and i’m not going anywhere. we’ll figure this out, one step at a time.”
logan nodded, his heart swelling with emotion. he knew he was lucky to have you, and he was determined to do better - to be better. for you, and for himself.
the two of you spent the rest of the evening talking, really talking, about everything that had been weighing on logan’s mind. it wasn’t easy, but it was necessary, and by the end of the night, you both felt a sense of relief that had been missing for far too long.
logan knew he still had a lot to work through, but he also knew that he wasn’t alone. you were by his side, ready to face whatever challenges came your way. and for the first time in weeks, he felt like he could finally breathe again.
as you both drifted off to sleep that night, wrapped up in each other’s arms, logan made a silent promise to himself: he would never take you for granted again. you were his rock, his safe haven, and he was going to do everything in his power to make sure you knew just how much you meant to him.
because at the end of the day, no matter how tough things got, you were the one thing in his life that he couldn’t afford to lose. and he would do whatever it took to keep you by his side, now and always.

Bucky wished Steve was still around so he could talk to him about things. He wish that his best friend was still there to see the progress he was slowly making. Wished to know if his best friend was proud of him.
But most importantly he wished Steve chose to stay with him and Sam so he could have met the person who brought him back to life, who brought his long existence actual meaning other than jumping from fight to fight. He knew Steve would have loved her and probably would have thanked her for everything.
But sadly Steve went to live a different life without him so he had to deal with Sam all alone.
For a year after Steve left Bucky struggled to go out, he struggled to find his path in a world that he wasn’t suppose to be apart of. He should have died that day when he fell from the train.
His therapist tried to get him to go out into the world and meet people, Bucky would say ‘next time’ until Dr Raynor eventually gave up on trying.
For a whole year Bucky moved with the motion, just existing, alive and breathing but just barely holding on to that invisible thread.
That was until six years ago. Six years ago everything changed.

“Buck please-“
“Don’t call me that! How many times do I have to tell you”
“Oh I’m sorry Sir Bucky! But like I said please just come with me? It would do you some good to get out of your apartment, wait Bucky are you even listening to me?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m listening. I do get out-“
“To see your therapist and that’s it”
“I’m still going out aren’t I?” Bucky responds snappily, rolling his eyes as Sam groans through the speaker.
“Please Bucky, it’s just coffee!”
“God sake, okay. I’ll be there. Bye” He really didn’t want to go out and get a coffee with Sam but he ended agreeing knowing that he would not have stopped, probably even going as far as coming to his apartment just to drag him out of there. Since Steve left, poor Bucky had been left all alone on with Sam, okay it wasn’t as bad as he made it out to be but still he had been left with a man that annoyed him more than anything.
Groaning inwardly he slides his phone into his jeans front pocket before shoving his gloved hands into the pockets of his leather jacket, as he walked down the street he kept his head down so he didn’t make eye contact with anyone walking by. It was safer that way. For him and those around him.
“James Barnes” he spoke roughly to the receptionist who made a habit of always pushing her chest out so he could get an eye full of her cleavage.
“Take a seat” she responds batting her eyelashes with her chest pushed out. He thought after the tenth time of him rolling his eyes at her not so subtle attempt at flirting she would get the hint.
He was not interested.
“S-sorry is this seat taken?” A soft timid voice from a woman pulled Bucky out of his staring competition he was having with the fake plant by the water dispenser.
“Huh?”
“Is-is anyone sitting here?”
“No. No you can sit”
“T-thank you” Bucky smiled and nodded softly instantly curious as to why she was also seeing a therapist. Bucky found himself getting lost in the smell of her perfume, the sweet smell creeping up his nostrils and into his senses. His eyes focused on the slow motion of her leg closest to his bouncing in time with the ticking of the clock.
“S-sir?”
“Huh? Yeah?”
“A-are you um are you J-James Barnes?”
Great just great. She knows who he is and from the way she stutters his name she clearly knows what he’s done and is scared of him. “Yes that’s me” he finally answers.
“Y-your names b-been called sir” she points over to where the receptionist is and sees her waiting for him to follow her down the hallway to Dr Raynors office.
Oh. Oh okay he got it wrong. “Oh, thank you”
“Y-your welcome sir”
Bucky offers her a small smile that she responds with the same and follows Lila down the corridor. He has no idea that the small smile he gave her meant a great deal to her. Nor does he know that she talks about him to her therapist that was two doors down from his.
Neither one realises that one small smile would make such a massive impact on their lives.
Over the course of four months, twice a week Bucky would see the woman whose name he had yet to know, every time they sat patiently in the waiting room they would find themselves sitting next to each other. Always quietly asking if the seat next to them was taken. Even if there were other available seats.
Dr Raynor had quite enjoyed hearing about the woman who seemed to have taken residence in Bucky’s mind. And Dr Harlow was proud of hearing that her patient was seeing someone new. She laughed when her patient blushed and began stumbling over her words that she was not seeing this man in that sense.
Bucky walked in to the waiting room expecting to find the woman whose presence he had become content being around only to frown at seeing the two seats that became unofficially theirs empty. The whole time he waited for her but she never showed. His name was called, as he followed Lila he kept turning his head back to the double doors in hopes that he would catch a glimpse of her. Walking into the room he frowned at seeing Dr Raynor and another woman sitting down. This was new.
“James, this is Dr Harlow.”
“Hi?”
“Hello James”
“What’s wrong? I didn’t do-“
“No, no James it’s… well you know the woman you’ve been telling me about?” Raynor cuts him off and waits for him to nod “well Dr Harlow is her therapist, Y/n was rushed in to the hospital early hours this morning-“
“Y/n? That’s her name? Wait… what happened to her? Is she okay? Where is-“
“James, she’s okay. We can’t disclose anything about what happened but-well you see Y/n has been talking about you in her sessions, nothing bad don’t worry, and you’ve been talking about her so we agreed that we should let you know”
Bucky sat there staring at his doctor as his mind raced with questions. She was in the hospital? Her name suited her perfectly. Why was she in the hospital? Who hurt her? She talked about him? ‘Nothing bad’ the good doctor stressed. Is she okay? “James?”
“Yeah erm, are you sure she’s okay?”
“Yes. We, well we talked to each other” Raynor points at between herself and Dr Harlow “and we think it would be a great opportunity for you to talk to her, maybe offer her some support-“
“Why me? Aren’t you two the therapists?”
“Yes we are but James I don’t think you realise how much those smiles and a few quiet words mean to Y/n. Nor she with you, now in my opinion I think it would be nice if the pair of you had someone to lean on when you don’t have a session.”
Thinking it over for a few minutes he nodded and agreed. Dr Harlow said Y/n had mentioned that she felt safe with him which made his heart race faster than usual at hearing that a complete stranger felt safe around him when he was so use to it being different. No one felt safe around him, hell he didn’t even feel safe with himself but yet she did. Not even ten seconds after the door closed behind Dr Harlow did Bucky start questioning his doctor about what had happened or where she was so he could go and see her, he just wanted to make sure she was fine but Raynor held strong and didn’t back down from the harsh glare he was sending towards her. She never did though to be honest.
Ten minutes later Dr Raynor thought it was best to cut their session short, though promised him that she would make out that they did the full hour.
Two weeks. Two whole weeks it had been since he was told that she was in the hospital and he hadn’t seen her. That day he thought it wouldn’t be any different to the other days where he expected to see her, until he turned his back on Lila who thankfully now took the hint that he wasn’t interested in her. His eyes squinted at seeing someone sitting in their seats.
“Is this seat taken?” He asked quietly, hoping that the woman in front of him would raise her head and smile as she said ‘no you can sit’. And when she did. Well… let’s just say that what he wanted to do to whoever had caused such pain and suffering to his Y/n he wouldn’t have pinned it on the Winter Soldier. No because Bucky Barnes would have happily admitted to shedding blood that wasn’t his own. Happily and proudly.
“N-no you can sit” she responds with that smile he sees when he closes his eyes at night.
“Doll-“ Lila cuts him off by calling his name signalling that it was his time, he nods at her then faces Y/n. “After your session I’m going to be waiting right here okay, and I want to take you for a coffee.”
“O-okay” Y/n says with a shy smile. Bucky smiles back before going up to Lila, eyebrows burrowing when she doesn’t lead him down the corridor. And that’s when it finally hits him. He had never seen her doing that to any of the other patients.
He tells Dr Raynor that Y/n was back, told her the bruises that littered her beautiful face, told her what he had said to her and her response. “Go easy on her James, don’t try and rush her into telling you all of her secrets okay” but in the same breath suggests a nice place for him to take her.
Forty five minutes after his appointment had ended he was now sat a cross the table from Y/n with a black coffee in front of him and a hot chocolate in front of her.
“You know what I’m going to ask you don’t you?” He says with a gentle smile, she nods. “Are you okay?”
“I-I’m fi-fine now sir”
“Bucky, call me Bucky. How long was you in the hospital for?”
“A few d-days, Dr Harlow told me that she told you what happened”
“Not exactly they just said that you was in the hospital, wanted me to know since you talk about me all the time” winking at her when she blushed.
“I-I d-don’t”
“All the time they said, said that your obsessed with me”
“Well y-you talk a-about me too!”
“Me? Never!” Bucky was ninety nine point nine percent sure that he had died right there and then and went to heaven when she laughed. He was sure of it. Her laugh could only described as angelic. God he wanted to hear it again and again until he dying breath.
“I-it was my ex” she whispered. She wasn’t stupid she knew what he wanted to ask.
“Where is he now?”
“Jail still, h-have to go court in-in two weeks. My lawyer said h-he’ll be going to prison for a long time, he broke the protection order an-and well this” she said gesturing to her face.
“You had a protection order against him?”
“Yes, throughout our relationship he was abusive the o-only way I managed to get out was because he had been cheating on me with a friend of mine, he left me a-and I was so happy because it meant that I didn’t have to suffer no more but the friend didn’t want him anymore because the fun of sneaking around had gone”. Taking a deep breath before sipping on her hot chocolate she continued. “He broke into my apartment and attacked me because I said no to taking him back, police was called by my neighbour and I got the restraining order against him because I could do that then, he went to prison and h-he got out three weeks ago, he broke into my apartment again and did this b-but the police arrived quickly as I already rang them”
“Doll… I’m so sorry”
“It’s okay. I’m okay now”
“It’s not okay Y/n”
“It is what it is, he’ll be going to prison for a long time and I’ll be able to live my life again.” She smiled.
“W-when is it that you have to go to court?”
“In two weeks, why?”
“Can I come with you? To offer my support” With her lack of response he knew he overstepped. Of course she isn’t going to want the former Winter Soldier to come with her to face another monster in her life. He’s about to apologise until she smiles once more and nods.
“I would really like that. Thank you Bucky” Bucky smiled and nodded.
Their second cup of hot drinks had slowly grown cold as the conversation flowed effortlessly between the pair. Bucky loved the way she no longer stuttered or stumbled over her words the longer they spoke. She was about to say something when a bang from the window startled the pair of them.
“Great.” He muttered.
“D-do you know him?”
“Who the crazy guy with his face squashed up against the window? Unfortunately” Y/n giggled at his words then looked at the man who did in fact have his face squashed up against the window, his eyes moving back and forth between herself and Bucky. Waving shyly at the man who waved excitedly back Bucky rolled his eyes. “You do realise you’ve just basically invited him in, don’t you? Oh see now he’s entering.”
“Stop being mean”
“Didn’t expect to see you here Barnes. Hi I’m Sam, Bucky’s best friend in the whole world”
“Hi Sam, I’m Y/n” she shakes his hand and smiles at Bucky who sits there rolling his eyes for the umpteenth time.
“Scoot over then Bucky. So how did you two meet?”
Bucky looked at Y/n to see if she was comfortable with letting him know, she just smiled. “We met in therapy”
“Oh, are you a therapist?”
“No, no I’m a patient”
“Does it help?”
“Sam!”
“What? I’m just asking”
Giggling at the two men “it’s fine Bucky, it has been helping. My therapist is really nice and understanding”
“That’s great. So did you two meet from group therapy or?”
“No we actually sat next to each other in the waiting room”
“Aw that’s so cute!” Sam winks at her whilst Bucky grumbled under his breath.
Sam ends up convincing Bucky and Y/n in getting something to eat not that he puts up to much of a fight as both of them were hungry themselves. Once again conversation flows effortlessly, even Bucky joined in with the laughter.
After food was eaten and an argument between the three about who was going to pay - Y/n winning when the two men were still arguing over the bill - they walked her all the way to her apartment. Bucky’s heart clenched painfully seeing her front door with dried blood on it. Sam noticed too and smiled sadly at his friend.
Tumblr media
Two whole weeks passed, in those two weeks Sam kept “bumping” into the pair, the three of them would walk around talking about their lives, both of the men noticing that she was very vague about her life but neither one pushed her into saying more.
Today was the day where Y/n was going to court, as she stood outside she checked her watch worrying that Bucky wasn’t going to show up, not like he needed to he didn’t owe her anything anyway. She turned around to head up the many steps when her names called, turning she sees Bucky running over towards her. Sam following closely behind.
“Hey, hi, sorry we’re late I tried to shake this one off but he’s persist-“
“No it’s okay, I-I really appreciate the pair of you coming today. It means so much”
“You’re welcome sunshine, you’ve got our support” Sam smiles wrapping his arms around her squeezing slightly.
“Y/n? We need to go in” her lawyer says from the large brown double doors.
Sam nods to the pair and heads up the steps, Bucky smiled “me and Sam are here for you, it’s going to be okay”
“I’m scared about seeing him again b-but I-I can do it” Bucky’s hand reached out to hers that shook.
“I’ve got you, I promise”
“T-th-thank you Bucky”
Hand in hand they head up to where Sam was waiting patiently and followed the lawyers lead into the courtroom. Bucky’s knee wouldn’t stop bouncing from anger as Y/n bravely stood in the witness stand and gave her statement, hearing all the things that the bastard did to her made him want to attack him. Sam knew what was going through his friends head, honestly? He wasn’t going to be far behind him.
Three hours later her ex received a ten year sentence. Bucky watched as her body relaxes by hearing the judges words. He and Sam smiles at her when she turns around, her eyes moving along the rows to find where they sat, smiling as soon as she lands on them.
After leaving the courthouse Bucky took her hand in his again and the three of them went to the restaurant that Sam had suggested, in a way to celebrate Y/n’s new found freedom. Neither one of the men mentioned about what they heard or the photos they saw in the courtroom, other than telling her that they were proud of her bravery.
Tumblr media
Six months had passed before any of them had realised, both of the therapists were proud of seeing completely different people sitting in front of them in their sessions. Bucky opened up more and so did Y/n, not only to their therapists but to each other.
The knock on the door pulled Bucky away from his bickering with Sam as his friend argued that pineapple on pizza was nice. “I’ll ask Y/n and see what she says! Hey doll”
“Hey, sorry I’m late”
“You’re not, don’t worry. Hey does pineapple belong on pizza?” He asked taking her coat and hanging it up on the hook.
“I’ve tried it and I like it” she waves to Sam.
“See! Sam I told you it was nice”
“But you said-“
“Shut up. Sam said that it was wrong but I said it was nice”
“No yo-“
“So how was your day?” Sam looked at Y/n mouthing ‘he’s lying’ making her giggle, she goes on to tell them all about her day which had Bucky hanging on to every word she spoke.
Halfway through the film Sam had picked Y/n went to the bathroom, Bucky eyed Sam curiously as the latter was sitting there grinning at him. “What?”
“Whens the wedding?”
“What wedding?”
“Yours and Y/ns”
“We’re not getting married? Why are you smiling like that?”
“If you say so, hey when are you going to tell her you love her?”
Choking on his beer Bucky shook his head “I don’t love her Sam”
“Okay, how about you telling her that you’re in love with her?”
“Sam shut up.”
“Nope. So when are you going to tell her?”
“I’m not going too alright. It’s just-it doesn’t matter alright just drop it”
“Drop what?” Y/n asked walking back into the living room.
“Pineapple being on pizza” Bucky says quickly his eyes going wide looking at Sam.
Laughing she shakes her head sitting back down next to Bucky “we’re not having this argument anymore boys”
“Try telling him that Y/n/n” now it’s Bucky’s turn to have a grin on his lips as Sam’s eyes squint at the pair.
“Sunshine has Bucky told you yet?”
“Told me what?”
“That he loves y-“
“Yogurts.”
“You… love yogurts?” She asked him with her eyebrow raised, Sam struggles to contain his laughter seeing Bucky become a stuttering mess.
“Yes… I love yogurts, problem?”
“Nope no problem here” If Y/n wasn’t snuggling into his left side Bucky would have throttled Sam.
Tumblr media
The knock on her door startled her from the tv screen in front of her - it didn’t help that she was watching a horror and that a jump scare was about to happen when the knock came.
“Bucky? Hey, are you okay?”
“I-I was just in the neigh-neighbourhood a-and I thought that I’d st-stop by”
“Yeah come in, James is everything alright?”
“Yeah, w-why?”
“It’s just that you’re stuttering… and I’m just worried that’s all”
“S-someone said something about me, it-it wasn’t good” he admitted twisting the bottle cap from the water bottle she had gave him.
“What did they say?”
“It doesn’t matter, I-I just wanted to see you-you know because I was in the neighbourhood”
The truth was he wasn’t, he had finally listened to Dr Raynors advice and go out. His plan was to go down the corner store to get some essentials in. Get in, get out that was easy and simple. He could do it. Until he heard two men who were talking clearly and loudly about him their conversation attracting the attention of others passing by them. And that’s when he realised his second mistake that day, the first mistake being to agree to go out, the second being that he forgot his gloves. The comments were harsh and unkind.
His first response was to put his head down shoving his hands into his pockets and walk all the way to Y/n’s apartment. Even if it was a forty minute walk.
Bucky needed to see her, he didn’t care if they sat in silence just as long as he was with her, he didn’t care if she forced him to watch that terrible tv show.
“Come on let’s watch something and have cuddles”
He was safe with her. Calmer. Happier. More comfortable and relaxed.
Tumblr media
“Have you asked her?”
“No Samuel I haven’t”
“Why?”
“Because I haven’t seen her today”
“Why?”
“Because she had her session with Dr Harlow”
“Why?”
“Sam, I’m going to punch you in the face”
“Wh-“
Bucky rolled his eyes and put the phone call down. He couldn’t bear to hear why one more time. He was too busy going over what he was going to ask Y/n, so many things could go wrong she could say no, it would be weird as they’ve only known each other for a year now. She’s going to say no. Of course she is. He can’t ask, he just ca-
“Buck? Open up my arms hurt”
Buck. Buck, the name Sam was not happy about hearing slipping out of her mouth. He had tried years to call him that but always got shot down. It wasn’t fair.
“Buck? Shit are you not in?”
“No! No I’m in doll, hi, hello, hi”
“Hi, hello, hi to you too” Bucky laughs taking the bags off her arms carefully, then takes them into the kitchen. A month ago Y/n moved in to his apartment with him after the landlord put up the rent making her struggle to keep paying the higher rent, Bucky caught her looking for a new place to live when he suggested her living with him, she first denied but Bucky swore and promised that he was more than happy to let her stay with him, she ended up agreeing, Bucky could have cried with happiness all night but managed to contain himself.
“Did you get everything?”
“Nope, forgot absolutely everything you asked for” sticking her tongue out at him, he laughed.
God he loves her weirdness.
“So I- god sake Sam, hold on pretty girl. What now Sam? No I haven’t. Because she’s just walked in. You’re so needy do you know that? Okay I’ll ask now. Yes I’ll do it whilst you’re on the phone. Y/n, do you want to come to Louisiana with Sam and I?”
“Really?”
“Yeah, we’re going for a week to see his sister and nephews and we want you to come too”
“Will his sister mind me being there?”
“No. So?”
“Are you guys really sure?”
“Absolutely”
“O-okay, that would be nice”
His smile doesn’t just take up his face but Sam’s as well “good, good. Did you hear Sam? Okay see you later” chucking his phone on to the counter he turns back to Y/n. “We leave tomorrow”
“Tomorrow? Oh god okay, I’ll go and pack now”
Two days later they arrive in Louisiana after both men took it in turns to drive, it was long and tiring for them but Y/n loved it. She had never been out of New York before so she was taking in the sights. When Bucky wasn’t driving he would watch her from his seat, seeing her face lit up made his heart tingle.
“Are you sure she won’t mind me being here?”
“I promise, she’s excited to meet you” Sam reassures her as he pulls up the gravelled driveway.
Greeting his sister and nephews, Bucky doing the same Sarah turned her attention to Y/n instantly engulfing her in a warm embrace. “It’s so nice to finally meet you”
“You too” she smiled softly.
Later that night after putting their things away they all sat outside watching as the sun started to set, Sam was manning the grill and Bucky were chasing the two boys around making them squeal with laughter and excitement. Sarah and Y/n were talking when Sarah asked the woman sitting in front of her something that made her choke and splutter on her drink.
“W-we aren’t to-together”
“Are you sure? The way he looks at you makes me think differently”
“No, no we’re just friends. Plus he wouldn’t like me so”
“Do you like him?”
“I-yes. But I would rather have him as my friend than not have him in my life”
“Tell him how you feel”
“No I can’t do that!”
“You can”
“No I can’t”
“Can’t what?” Bucky’s voice comes from behind her. Sarah has to stifle her laughter as Y/ns eyes went as wide as saucers.
“I-erm nothing.”
“Okay? Hey there’s a crab down on the beach that the boys have found, want to come and see it?”
“O-okay” Bucky smiles and holds out his hand for her to take, helping her stand he keeps his hand in hers as they walk towards the two boys.
“Is she in love with him?”
“I think so, hopefully they’ll admit their feelings because they’re so cute together” Sarah says with her eyes trained on the two fading figures, Sam smirks before flipping the burgers.
Later that night Y/n got startled when she went into the bathroom seeing Bucky standing motionless in front of the mirror. “Shit! Bucky you scared- hey are you okay?”
“I-I’m fi-I’m not okay Y/n/n” Y/n moved so quickly wrapping her arms around him, both falling on the ground.
“It’s okay, it’s okay” the sobs wracked through his body making her body shake. She kept repeating those words like a mantra.
“M-my hair”
“Your hair? What about it?”
“I-I want it gone, please, please help me g-get rid of it”
Her heart broke at hearing him sounding so small, in the whole year of knowing him he had always sounded so strong, and confident. Also she loved his hair and they both knew it, on nights where they cuddled up together on the couch watching movies her fingers would always end up playing with the soft strands of hair.
“A-are you sure?” feeling him nodding against her chest “okay, let me find some scissors and a clipper and I’ll do it for you okay?” Trying to stand was difficult especially since having a super soldier clinging to her. “Buck, I need to stand”
Finding the scissors was easy, it was just finding the clippers she had a difficult time coming up on. Cheering silently in triumph when she discovered them in the fourth draw. “Should we go outside so we don’t wake everyone up?”
“O-okay. Leave the light on Cass is scared of the dark, Sarah leaves the bathroom light on for him” Bucky whispered wrapping both of his hands around her free one.
Outside with only the porch light illuminating them, Y/n started cutting his hair the shorter it got the more Bucky started to relax. When it came to trimming his hair Bucky’s left arm reached around to tug on her waist, bringing her around to stand in between his legs, he smiled shyly up at her. Without thinking she leaned down as she placed her lips to his forehead. His arms snaked around the back of her legs squeezing lightly.
“I-it’s done, maybe Sam can fix it up later if it’s bad?”
“I bet y-you did a good job”
“Would you be mad if I said you had a massive bald spot right on the top of your head?”
He laughed and shook his head “no I won’t be mad”
“It’s a good job that there isn’t one isn’t there?”
“Y/n, thank you, i-it means a lot to me. Thank you”
“You don’t need to thank me. D-do you want to talk about what happened?”
“It was a nightmare. Just about my past” leading her over to the hammock on that swayed ever so lightly from the night breeze. “T-they did bad things to me, made me do worse”
“I’m here if you want to talk about it” she says squeezing his hand.
“They made me kill people, even when I completed the mission to their satisfaction they would still punish me and I never knew why. The chair was the worst, I-I did what I was told to do and I was still punished.”
Looking at the water he breathed deeply, he was about to tell her something to no one else knew, not even his therapist. “I-I’ve wanted to end my life since coming back from Wakanda b-b-but not since I met you I swear!”
“Oh Buck”
“It was easier to end it you know? But I couldn’t do it, I needed to try and make up for all the damage I caused.”
“Bucky it was-“
“It was though, wasn’t it? It was me the whole time”
“It wasn’t. Bucky you wasn’t in control of your own mind, your a good man, an incredible man - don’t scoff at me mister - you are, if you don’t believe me think about Sarah, even though I don’t know her all that well she seems to have a good sense of judgement, do you really think that she would let you be around her babies if she thought you was a bad person?”
Thinking her words over he had to agree with her words about Sarah even Sam wouldn’t let him anywhere near his sister and his nephews. Hell Tony wouldn’t have allowed him near his wife or daughter if they believed he was the monster that he still believed he was. “Y-you’re right”
Now it was her turn to think over the words from Sarah earlier that night. It was most likely going to blow up in her face and she was going to lose him as a friend forever but maybe just maybe Sarah could be right. “I wouldn’t have fallen in love with you if you were a bad person Buck”
The silence that followed was killing her. She should have just kept her mouth shut.
He however couldn’t believe his ears. Surely she was playing a trick on him. There was no way this perfect angel as he always described her would ever feel the same way as him. Surely.
“I’m sorry Bucky, I-I’ll go n-“
He cuts her off by pressing his lips against hers. The kiss was soft, timid at first before they both gained their confidence their tongues dancing a slow dance together. Pulling away reluctantly Bucky leans his forehead against hers, both smiling widely at each other.
“I’m in love with you too” he whispered.
Nothing else was said. Nothing else was needed to be said.
Sam walks on to the porch with his hot cup of coffee that morning, his feet faltering when he sees Bucky and Y/n curled up together on the hammock fast asleep. Pulling his phone out he took a photo of the pair before running back into the house showing Sarah the photo.
Tumblr media
As soon as they were back in New York Bucky asked Y/n out on a date, then another and another until he asked her to be his girlfriend. And soon enough she had moved into his room with him.
The first time she saw him topless was when he came out of the bathroom wearing grey joggers, he thought she was still in the living room. He heard the quiet gasp, he looked up to see her standing there and his stomach dropped.
“Y/n-“
“Your body… did the gods sculpt you? I-is that, two, four, six yep that’s an eight pack, how do you get an eight pack?”
Hearing her words he blushed with a little chuckle. “T-the scars-“
“Beautiful”
“Don’t lie to me”
“I would never lie to you Buck, everything about you is beautiful”
That night they made love for the first time, each of them taking their time in admiring the scars that littered their bodies. The second she pressed her lips delicately against the rough, raised patch where skin meets metal he honestly thought his heart was going to stop beating.
“ты мой спаситель, did you know that?” he whispered one night placing kisses on her bare shoulder.
“What does that mean?”
“ты мой спаситель?”
“Yeah”
“It means… your smelly”
“No it doesn’t” she laughs.
“No your right, it means you’re my saviour”
“Buck-“
“You are Y/n/n, you’ve saved me you’ve made me happier than I’ve ever been before a-and I know I wouldn’t still be here if it wasn’t for you”
“I’ll be with you until you want me to leave”
“So never” he laughed, pulling her body even closer to his. “I love you Y/n/n”
“I love you too Buck”
Bucky wished Steve was still around so he could talk to him about things. He wish that his best friend was still there so he could tell the blond about how nervous he was. He imagined Steve’s reaction as he fixed his tie for the ninth time within five minutes.
A year had passed, on their year anniversary Bucky got down on one knee and proposed, three months later he was standing in the spare bedroom of Sarah’s house in his suit as Sarah helped Y/n with her dress.
He really wished Steve was there to see him marrying his love.
A month before marrying both Sam and Bucky retired, both men tired of the bloodshed and nightmares. Sam told Bucky that he was going to move down to Louisiana, he even brought up a business proposal, Bucky had to admit it did sound tempting he promised Sam that he would run it by Y/n.
“Sam’s moving closer to Sarah, you know now that we’ve retired.”
“Oh, right”
“He erm he brought up a proposal to go into business together-“
“Did you say yes? Please tell me you said yes!”
“Why? Do you want to move to Louisiana?”
“Yes! I mean I knew Sam was going to move back there so I may or may not have been looking at houses down there…”
Sam cheered loudly down the phone when Bucky rang him to tell him that they were coming too.
“You ready Bucky?” Sam asked popping his head around the door.
“Yeah, yeah I’m ready”
Bucky faltered walking out of the house only expecting to see AJ, Cass and Roy - the man who was going to be marrying them - but yet all the people Y/n and himself had befriended over the two years they had been going to Louisiana, had showed up to watch them become one.
Being announced as husband and wife had their hearts doing a double take. They were married and neither one could believe it. And neither one could wipe the smile off their faces.
“ты мой спаситель… wait did I pronounce any of that right?” She panicked as they slow danced to the live music from a local band.
“Di-did you learn that just for me?”
“Yes” she giggled “so did I say it correctly?”
“Yes you did мой спаситель”
The celebration went on well into the night.
Tumblr media
** present time **
“Buck?”
“Huh?”
“Did you just hear what I said?” Y/n looks up at him lightly nibbling on her bottom lip looking nervously.
Of course he had heard the words that came out of her mouth but those exact words made him think about how they met, and how far they both had come from being complete strangers who met in the waiting room of their therapist building to now being a happily married couple whose love continued to grow as the days passed.
“I did, but tell me again, please”
Oh how he can’t wait to tell his best friend Sam the news he had just received.
Taking his hands in hers she placed them on her still flat stomach and smiled.
“You’re going to be a dad.”

Could you do a House fanfic where after failing at treating a patient, House takes his stress and anger out on the reader? She then considers quitting being a doctor. House is confronted by Dr. Cuddy and his team, causing him to go comfort and apologize to the girl.
Uncontrolled Anger
Gregory House x Female Reader (I took it romantically for fun)
Universe: House MD
Summary: Maybe you should have known better than to question House about his feelings.
Warnings: Patient death, mentions of addictions, angst
Tumblr media
You sat silently, your eyes on the dead body in front of you. You had watched as the team fought to help the man, all for it to fail after multiple misdiagnoses and wrong solutions. You, being a doctor, knew what they were going through. You’d gone through it a few times with your patients.
Sighing, you rest a hand on Taub’s shoulder, offering him a reassuring smile. He returned it, then watched you go as you made your way out of the room and eventually wandered to House’s office. When you reached the glass door with his name on it, you stood silently for a moment with your arms crossed. He had one hand in a fist by the side of his head and the other filling out paperwork.
You brought your hand down to the handle, allowing yourself into his office. You took a few paces, then turned your attention to the big yellow chair by his bookshelf. You lowered yourself into the chair, watching him silently for a moment.
“How are you?” You asked gently, not wanting to annoy him while he was in the middle of scribbling on the sheet.
“I don’t know what you’re expecting me to say,” he muttered, still keeping his gaze away from you.
“You could at least say that you’re okay,” you said to him, tilting your head slightly as you shook it. You knew he handled emotions horribly, in ways that often required you to intervene, “Greg—“
He slammed the pen down and looked at you. And you could see why he had been avoiding your gaze to begin with, “You’re not a therapist. In fact, you’re presently the reason I could end up needing one. I just want some peace and quiet because excuse me for not being Doctor Y/N Y/L/N.”
“What —“ You cut yourself off, truly hurt by his words. His blue eyes held no remorse for what he said, and you quickly stood and left the room. You bumped into Chase, but ignored him entirely as you made your way down the hall with the intention of going to the elevator.
As you stood silently in the elevator, waiting to go down to the main floor to leave for the evening, you processed why you continued to try and support the man that. You stared at the metal doors, jaw clenched as you finalized your decision.
You didn’t want to work in the same building as someone like Greg House. Cuddy wouldn’t fire him, he’s too good.
Once you reached the main floor, you went to the clinic, seeing if there was any help you could offer and breathing a sigh of relief when you were able to step in. You dove into working throughout the clinic, waiting patiently to be able to talk to Cuddy about what was going on.
You filed patients in and out of the room you were using, only stopping for nurses to clean and sterilize everything between each patient. However, your consistent flow was ruined by Foreman's sudden intrusion into the room. You stared at him.
"Do you need something? Because I would like to treat my patients," you informed him.
"Just checking on you," he shrugged, tucking his hands in his pants pocket and leaning against the door, further preventing you from leaving the room, let alone treating your patients.
"I am fine," you muttered, tossing a file on the counter and crossing your arms. You leaned against the counter, "I am tired of him behaving like a child; I never thought I'd consider leaving my position because Cuddy refuses to fire House."
"I can talk to her for you,"
"Not worth it," you shook your head, "Now can you please go?"
Foreman was reluctant for a moment, but then nodded his head and walked out of the room. Your next patient came in, and you returned to your job.
Little did you know, Foreman was taking matters into his own hands despite your protests. The team liked you, there was no denying it, so of course he turned to Cuddy because of what you'd said. It was hard to believe, especially when you typically had a strong relationship with House, even when he was being childish.
House was in his office when Cuddy went search for him, her hands on her hips. He stared blankly upon her arrival, a frown on his face as he waited for what she had to say.
"You're going to make her quit,"
"Her?" House asked, shaking his head and shrugging as he waited for an elaboration. He looked toward the office door to see the team staring at him with disapproving looks, which caused him to sigh and roll his eyes, "Y/n's choices are not my fault."
“You’re pathetic,” Cuddy muttered. House shrugged. To him, there was no point in denying it. Cuddy clenched her jaw, “I thought you liked her!”
“She’s ear grating, like you,” Lisa frowned and House shrugged once more.
“I can’t lose another good doctor because of your antics, House,”
She spun on her heel and marched out of the room, leaving House to his own thoughts.
It was early in the evening, you’d showered and done some dishes, when there was a knock on your door. You were less than enthusiastic to open it, especially after peering through the hole to see House on the other side. He leaned on his cane lazily, a bag of what was clearly takeout food in his other hand as he looked down at you.
“What do you want?”
“I come bearing food,” he held the back up to emphasize his point.
You rolled your eyes and moved to slam the door in his face, but it made contact with his cane instead. House let himself in, limping toward your couch and plopping on it. The smell of the Chinese takeout hit your nose, making your mouth water as you pushed the door shut the rest of the way and turned to face the man on your couch.
“What do you want?” You repeated, less than enthused and lacking the emotion you usually had when speaking to House.
“Not a lot of hospitals would be willing to take you,” he spoke matter of factly. He dug into the brown paper bag, pulling out bulls of food and beginning to eat out of his own, “Foreman struggled to get a new job when he had to leave—“
“Foreman was accused of malpractice, and caught,” you reminded House.
“Malpractice is a common occurrence in this hospital, you think any other Dean would hire someone who’s worked with me? You’re poorly mistaken, Dollface,”
“You’re a piece of shit,” you spat, shaking your head and storming into the kitchen, “You know that?”
“I just call em like I see em,”
“If you don’t have anything genuine to say, then leave,”
There was silence, and then you heard your couch creak as he got up. Good, he got the point. That was what you thought until you heard his cane moving across the linoleum floor of your kitchen. You turned to see Greg House standing over you, and you gulped.
“What do you expect me to do here?” He questioned.
“Oh I don’t know, apologize?” You countered, side stepping him to grab a glass from a cupboard, “I was helping you. Making sure you were okay and not going to do something stupid after losing a patient — but apparently that wasn’t good enough, hm?”
“Y/n—“
“No, all I wanted to do was help you,” you faced him, “everybody in that damned hospital does what they can to help you, and this is how you repay us? That’s real shitty, House.”
House. Unlike everyone else, you rarely used his last name when talking to him. When speaking of him, sure, when in professional settings, almost always. But never in the privacy of you two or amongst friends. That’s when he realized the reality of what he’d caused.
“Y/n, I’m sorry,” he spoke, taking a step toward you. He leaned his cane on the counter and placed his hands on your waist. You didn’t move your arms from your sides, merely looking into his blue eyes to see if he was being genuine.
It seemed too good to be true.
“Accept the apology before I’m forced to take it back,”
And there it was.
“You’re a pain in my ass,” you muttered, moving your hands to rest on his biceps. House squeezed your waist, knowing that he got what he wanted. You rose to your tip-toes, your lips just barely touching his before you pulled away, “Now come on: that take-out is calling my name.”

“Jesus Christ you drive like a grandma,” you yawned, dragging your suitcase through the hotel doors.
“I don’t drive like a grandma; I drive the speed limit,” James asserted and you rolled your eyes.
“We would have been here ages ago if you’d let me take the wheel.”
“No we would have been in body bags,” James retorted. “Come on, it’s late, let's just check into our rooms and get this over with.”
You nodded in agreement and made your way over to the singular receptionist, informing her you had booked two rooms in advance under both yours and the hospital's name.
“Um, I’m only seeing one reservation here,” she said. “This is for the medical conference right?”
You both nodded your heads, confused as to what could be happening.
“If you don’t have another one under the hospital do you have a spare room? Anything will do, we can just expense it,” James suggested.
“Unfortunately not,” the lady shook her head. “We’re fully booked. There’s just the one room.”
You pursed your lips and looked over at James with a frown before turning your attention back to the receptionist.
“So you’re telling me not only did I have to drive with grandma here all the way from New Jersey, now I have to sleep with him?”
“I wish there was something we could do, maybe you can get your hospital to contact the hotel to get credit or some reimbursement.”
“I think I’ll need psychiatric care for this, but thanks for the offer,” you said sarcastically, picking up your bag and moving away, letting James take care of the rest of the check in. After a few minutes, he came up to you and handed you a hotel key, pointing to the room number on it.
“Psychiatric care? Was that really necessary?” he asked. “And you’ve slept on the couch in my office, this cannot be that bad.”
“Yeah, but you weren’t on the couch with me genius,” you rolled your eyes. “This is gonna be a long few days.”
“You’re telling me,” James raised his brows as you entered the elevator together.
Once you got to your room, as if sharing wasn’t bad enough they put you in a cramped one with a queen sized bed.
“I’m gonna choose to ignore the glaring close proximity of this space and go get ready in the washroom. Any objections?”
James pressed his lips together and shook his head saying he’d get changed out in the room while you were in there.
You took your time, so you’d have some excuse for acclimating yourself to your sleeping situation. Brushing your teeth and caring for your hair and skin made the extension of time a little easier to justify. When you were finally changed and completely ready, you unlocked the door and stepped out of the washroom watching as James’ eyes widened at the sight of you.
“What is that on your head?” he pointed.
“It’s a bonnet,” you said simply.
“A bonnet? Like, as in baby’s bonnet?”
“No,” you shook your head, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “A bonnet as in a hair bonnet so it doesn’t get frizzy when I sleep?”
“And what’s that on your teeth?” he asked, noticing the other interesting contraption you had in your mouth.
“A mouth guard, James, seriously are you gonna ask me where I got my pyjamas next?”
“You talk with a lisp when that thing’s in your mouth,” he pointed as he walked past you to the washroom.
“Yeah, thanks Captain Obvious,” you rolled your eyes and moved over to the bed, pulling back the blankets and slipping underneath the covers.
You glanced at the clock and saw the late time, figuring it was probably a good idea to get some sleep since you’d have an early morning. How naive you were.
It took James less than ten minutes to be done with what he needed to do in the washroom before he came to join you and it took even less time for him to fall asleep.
And with sleep came the most monstrous snores you’d ever heard. You weren’t sure how much time had passed but it could have been an eternity of you staring up at the ceiling, your eyes twitching, wishing for sleep, but unable to rest while laying down next to a fog horn.
Eventually you figured your best bet was to either suffocate yourself or James with a pillow, but settled instead on using it to cover your ears.
When the sun peeked through the curtains and you could feel James shift next to you, you turned around to watch him closely while he woke up.
“Good morning?” he yawned and looked at you with a hint of confusion.
“Yeah, maybe for you,” you scoffed.
“You look like hell,” he commented, noticing the tiredness in your eyes and sluggishness of your demeanour.
You didn’t say anything, simply throwing the pillow in his face before getting up and pulling off your bonnet and mouthguard.
“Where are you going?” James asked.
“I’ll see you at breakfast,” you waved at him and grabbed your hotel key and a coat, not bothering to change out of your sweatpants before leaving the room.
James spent the rest of the morning a little confused by your actions, but he put it behind him and instead took a quick shower, getting dressed, brushing his teeth, and shaving before heading downstairs for the hotel’s breakfast.
It was there that he ran into you, still in a sleep t-shirt and sweatpants with a large jacket overtop.
“Where did you go?” he asked, walking up to you.
“To get you these,” you threw him a box and he caught it with a slight fumble before looking down to see what it was.
“Nose strips? Why?”
“Because you snore louder than my maternal grandfather mixed with a foghorn. That’s why.”
James looked offended, “I do not snore,” he insisted.
“You think I would look like this if you didn’t, Wilson?” you pointed to yourself.
“I’ve had three wives, I think one of them would have told me about this,” he said.
“Well maybe you developed sleep apnea, I don’t know,” you threw your hands up in the air. “Just use the nose strips and go to the sleep clinic when we get back to New Jersey. Wouldn’t want wife number four dealing with that.”
“I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that,” he said, shoving the small box in his pocket.
“I couldn't care less, I am running on zero hours of sleep so what you are gonna do is get me something to eat so I can take a shower and pop back three caffeine pills and hope for the best.”
James didn’t have much of a chance to argue with you so he listened, making you a breakfast sandwich and wrapping it in some napkins before moving to go eat his own food.
When you came back downstairs, you looked a lot better. James assumed the shower had helped a little bit with waking you up, but getting through a whole day of seminars would be tricky.
“You feeling better?” he asked, handing you the sandwich.
“I will after I drink this,” you held up an energy drink, but James quickly snatched it from you, reading the caffeine content.
“How many pills did you take?” he asked.
“I don’t know like four?” you said.
“You can’t drink this, you’re gonna have a heart attack,” he said, throwing the drink in the trash.
“Wilson!” you whined. “That was my wake up juice.”
“I’ve seen you pull an all nighter and then do back to back cancer patient consults, you’re going to be fine,” he assured you. “I have to make sure I get you back to New Jersey in one piece.”
“That’s rich coming from the person who broke me in the first place,” you snorted and James rolled his eyes before nudging you and motioning for you to follow him into your first seminar room.
You were greeted first by some of the people at the registration table as you grabbed your schedules and name tags, hanging them around your neck.
“Are you planning on going to Dr. Joyner’s talk on this new joint treatment?” James asked, pointing to his schedule.
“I don’t know, I just figured I’d follow you around everywhere,” you admitted. “You know I hate coming to these things, I only do it because I have to.”
“I thought you were coming to support me,” he frowned.
“Well, yeah that too I guess,” you waved your hand dismissively. “But otherwise Cuddy forced me to come so here I am.”
“Well, I think we should go because it might be a good thing to introduce for some of our breast cancer patients,” he explained.
“Whatever you say Dr. Wilson,” you sighed.
Your disinterested nature was, however, somewhat of a farce. In reality you did think Dr. Joyner’s treatment methods had proven to be very successful and could be worth applying in your own practice, but if you seemed too happy and excited your eventual retaliation against James for your lack of sleep last night combined with him throwing out your energy drink would seem less justified.
The talk was interesting just as you had predicted and you and James both took ample notes, planning to corner Dr. Joyner to get her information to ask further questions about how it might look to implement the treatment at Princeton Plainsboro.
“I have to moderate a panel during the next block,” James said. “Do you want to come, or is there another session that interests you more.”
“No I’ll come with,” you nodded, sensing this would be the time to seize your opportunity.
It was simple, silly even, because sitting in the second row from the front gave you just enough cover to discreetly flip off James as he was talking, making him look at you incredibly confused and lose his train of thought.
“Dr. WIlson?” one of the panelists asked. “Is everything okay?”
“Yes, sorry,” James apologized, hoping the red tinge on his ears wasn’t noticeable. He continued speaking but kept looking back over at you, knowing he couldn’t do anything without a whole room of doctors seeing.
You seemed to have distracted James enough for there to be a few embarrassing moments where he fumbled over his words, possibly thinking in his mind what he could do to get back with you, but drawing a blank and in turn getting distracted from his job of fielding questions for the panelists.
After the session was over and you broke off for lunch, James came to find you only to see you had slipped away into the masses, all a part of your design of course.
Knowing he would want an explanation for your behaviour you figured you’d grab your food first and sit down, waiting for him to find you.
Just as you had predicted, he found you and pulled out the seat next to you, sitting down.
“What the hell was that for?” he asked. “Is this still about the snoring? I told you I don’t snore.”
“Actually,” you said loudly. “This is about the fact that you gave me-,”
James quickly rushed forward and covered your mouth, knowing whatever could come out of it would not be good so you fought back by stomping down on his foot, watching as he let out a loud enough yelp to cause some heads to turn.
You removed his hand from your mouth and said,
“The finger was for all the snoring, that was for my energy drink.”
“You’re a child,” he winced in pain, holding his foot in his hands. “A child with a mean stomp.”
“I’m just evening out the scales Wilson, don’t worry, we’re even now.”
“Oh no,” he shook his head. “You better watch your back, this is not over.”
You smirked, “Am I sensing we’re about to make this conference ten times more interesting.”
“To stay on theme, you started it,” he stuck his tongue out and you grabbed it before he could pull it back into his mouth.
“Don’t underestimate me, Wilson. You forget I have to sleep in the same bed as you. Nowhere is safe.”
You let go and wiped your hand off on his shirt before turning back to your food. This is exactly what the weekend needed. Just a little bit more entertainment.
You were on your guard for the rest of the day, watching James’ every movement, but nothing ever came.
Even once you had made your way back upstairs to your room and were getting ready side by side in the washroom, there wasn’t even the simplest retaliation or splashing water on you from the faucet.
“What’s that?” James asked, pointing to the container you were holding.
“Oh it’s just a serum,” you shrugged. “You should try it.”
“I’m good thanks,” he shook his head and looked back at his toothbrush.
You weren’t gonna take no for an answer.
“Come on James it’s not battery acid,” you rolled your eyes, trying to squeeze some from the dropper on his face but he quickly covered himself and tried to push you away, but wasn’t fast enough to see your hand coming from the opposite direction, squirting the solution all over his face.
He squeezed his eyes shut, while you grinned in victory, rubbing in the serum over his forehead and cheeks.
“Why are you like this?” he asked.
“I thought you knew, we’ve been friends for long enough,” you chuckled. “Come on, today was boring, let me have some fun and do your skincare.”
“And why should I trust you with glycolic acid near my face?” he asked.
“Oh, someone knows their stuff,” you chuckled. “You should trust me because it’s like only 7% strength and won’t hurt you unless it gets in your eyes or mouth or you have a sunburn.”
James opened his eyes again and couldn’t help but smile a little when he saw how much fun you were having. If anything it would help take his mind off his big presentation the next day.
“Alright, you win this time,” he said. “But don’t think I’m gonna make this a habit.”
“That’s what they all say, just wait, you’ll change your mind.”
You got him to lean against the counter, pulling out a few things from your makeup bag and then taking the next thing out putting some of the solution on your hands before rubbing it under his eyes and around his forehead.
“Hey watch it,” he swatted your hand that looked like it was coming for his eye.
“Oh stop, I was just trying to smooth out your eyebrows,” you squished his cheeks with your fingers.
Next was an exfoliating scrub and you watched as he scrunched his nose at the feeling on his skin.
“Stop being such a baby,” you chuckled. “It’s not that bad.”
“Yeah, well excuse me for not thinking this is the sequence of events that would occur when I heard we’d need to share a room.”
You smiled to yourself, “Me neither, but this is kind of fun. Like a sleepover.”
James rolled his eyes at your comment.
“Yeah for you maybe. It feels like my face is getting molested right now.”
“Stop being so whiny,” you flicked his cheek. “Now wash your face off.”
He happily obliged, getting all the gritty textured product off his face before letting you do the finishing touches.
It seemed to be taking a while so James decided to ask,
“Are you done yet?”
“I’ve been done for five minutes,” you chuckled. “I’ve just been rubbing moisturizer all over your face to see how long you’d let me go for.”
James glared at you with a small hint of amusement in his eyes before turning around to leave, escorted out by your giggles.
You finished getting ready in the washroom, only coming out when you realized you didn’t know where your bonnet was.
“Wilson, have you seen my bonnet?” you peeked your head out of the washroom and asked.
Seeing it on the bed he grabbed it and brought it over to you, placing it on your head and over your eyes like an oversized hat. You lifted it up to get a better look at him, noticing he was wearing one of the nose strips you bought him alone with a pair of glasses.
“I didn’t know you wore glasses,” you commented.
“I don’t,” he said simply. “I wear contacts, this is just for the evenings.”
“The things you learn when you’re forced to share a room with your colleague,” you hummed while adjusting the bonnet on your head. After you were content with its placement, you went to join James in the bed, both of you taking a moment to really observe the other and all of their sleeping gear.
“You know I thought I was high maintenance,” James noted.
It may have looked like overkill, but it never felt like overkill when an eye mask and some ear plugs would give you a good night’s sleep.
“Yeah, you still look like a grandma,” you retorted, mostly a comment on him doing the crossword in bed with his glasses perched lower down on his nose.
Climbing into the bed you turned off the lamp on your side and lowered your eye mask, allowing James to continue his crossword while you slept. You wished him a goodnight with a yawn and figured that would be the end of it. And it was…until it wasn’t.
—
“Wilson, what the hell did you do?” you asked harshly, coming over to him at breakfast and holding out your ringing phone. “Non-stop since six in the morning!”
“You haven’t picked them up?” he asked. “What if it’s an emergency? You really should take care of that,” he said while serving himself some fruit salad.
With the next ring you caved, wondering exactly what it was he had done and when you listened to the person talking on the other side your eyes went wide before hanging up the phone.
“I need to change my number,” you said, shocked. “You put out an ad for me? What the hell did it say?”
“Oh, I don’t know who did it,” he lied. “But I think I came across something that said: Call me to make your dreams come true. 100% satisfaction guaranteed.”
“Oh my God! Ew, ew, ew! Wilson that is messed up!”
“I didn’t do it,” he continued lying.
“Oh cut the crap,” you rolled your eyes. “You picked a bad day to retaliate. Remember, you’ve got your presentation which means I have the upper hand.”
James looked at you warningly,
“You asked for it, Wilson. Prepare to deal with the consequences,” you pinched his cheek and left to go and grab some breakfast and then deal with your phone company to try and change numbers.
As if James was not already nervous for the presentation of his paper, you had just gravely upped the stakes.
He was the first speaker of the day so he decided to get in early, only to see you chatting with one of the organizers. He quickly walked over to meet you, but before he got there you had shaken the organizers hand and a deal was sealed.
“Ah Dr. Wilson, I just met your colleague here,” Dr. Mwanza smiled. “She just offered to do the introductions for you this morning.”
“Oh, great,” he forced a smile, trying to seem pleased with the outcome, knowing it couldn’t be good for him.
“You made the right decision, Dr. Mwanza. No one knows James here like I do,” you wrapped an arm around James’ shoulder and kissed his cheek, watching as he turned beet red from the contact.
“Well, you two seem very close. I can’t see anyone more fitting for the job.”
You smiled and waved goodbye and watched as the hall began to fill with more and more doctors.
“You ready, Wilson?”
“Not anymore,” he groaned and went up to the stage where his notes were, preparing himself for whatever it was you were planning on throwing at him.
Within the next ten minutes, everyone had returned from breakfast and were sitting in their seats, waiting for things to begin.
Dr. Mwanza handed you a microphone and you stood up on the stage, looking back at James who was wringing his hands in his seat.
“Good morning everyone,” you welcomed and began introducing yourself. “I’m here today to introduce you to my colleague, Dr. James Evan Wilson, who has done some fascinating research on cancer patient care. Now since you guys don’t know James here like I do, I’ll stick to the highlight reel and then we can let him talk.”
There was a small chuckle from the audience before you continued.
“James went to McGill for his undergraduate and then proceeded to do medical school at Columbia and then a specialization in oncology at UPenn. He’s worked at Princeton Plainsboro for the past ten years and is the head of the department while also simultaneously providing consultations for the diagnostic team. On a more personal level, he’s painfully single and looking for a real connection so make sure to corner him at lunch if you know what I mean.”
James simply squeezed his eyes shut and prayed you wouldn’t say more, but it still kept coming.
“But if snoring is a deal breaker for you, you may want to skip out on that. Anyways, I’ve probably embarrassed him enough for now, so I’d like you to join me in welcoming Dr. James Wilson.”
The room clapped and James used whatever energy he had left in him to stand up and move forward, taking the microphone from you with a glare and then fixing it to the stand on the podium while you sat behind him on one of the chairs on the stage.
As much as James was embarrassed by your previous comments, at least you hadn’t undermined his work, so he used his best acting skills and began to share about his paper and all of the research he had been doing over the past few years.
When his talk was finished there was a period for asking questions and you could sense James wanted to drag things out as long as possible so he wouldn’t have to deal with the fallout of your comments about being single.
Either way, a break finally had to come and his presentation came to an end, allowing you to finally see the fruits of your labour.
It felt as if for the rest of the day there was a line of people waiting to talk to James, granted a few had questions about his paper that they wanted to discuss further, but most were testing the waters to see if getting a date was a possibility.
After maybe the 20th person had come up to talk to him, he finally started saying something else, seeing an opportunity to get back at you.
He waited until you were around to put his plan into play, coming up to you and wrapping his arms around you from behind.
“Wilson, what are you doing?” you asked.
“Payback,” he whispered, kissing your cheek before turning your chin so you were looking back at him. Your foreheads were now resting against each other and he quietly whispered. “You forgot we have witnesses who’ve seen us go into the same room and I’m a very convincing actor. Now everyone’s gonna wonder why you told the whole room your boyfriend was painfully single.”
“Well played, Wilson. Game recognizes game. And just because you figured out a way to weasel yourself out of this, I’ll let you have it, no fighting back.”
“Good because I’d probably get a pretty bad reputation and then get reported to Cuddy for harassment otherwise,” he reflected.
“Yeah, I’m not that mean,” you patted his cheek. “But as usual-,”
“Watch my back, you’ve got something else up your sleeve. Well, so do I.”
“Best conference ever,” you grinned and James chuckled at your childish attitude. He would have been perfectly content taking in the content like the other doctors, but he had to admit this was a lot more fun and you brought a pretty good challenge.
By the end of the second day, you had managed to figure out to route all of your calls to James’ phone, forcing him to deal with the problem he had created for you, but he had also come back just as hard by sprinkling glitter in your purse when you weren’t looking, and knowing when you were in a rush to find something you’d dump it all out on your lap creating a mess that would be a nightmare to clean up. And as if the glitter wasn’t enough he told anyone who would listen that you’d visited a strip club last night.
You walked back up to your hotel room after having gotten separate dinners, (you had called in for James’ reservation and pushed it by an hour), finding it hard to fight a smile while he looked at you extremely annoyed.
“I don’t suppose you had anything to do with my reservation,” he asked you in the elevator.
“A magician never reveals her secrets,” you shrugged.
“I had invited Dr. Joyner out to dinner, but I’m guessing you didn’t know that,” he said.
“No, but that makes it ten times better,” you laughed. “God what did you tell her?”
“I didn’t know what the hell was happening, what was I supposed to tell her?” he asked.
“Well if it was a date you could have used it as an excuse to go somewhere more intimate than the most crowded restaurant this side of Boston,” you shrugged.
“It wasn’t a date,” he said when the elevator doors opened.
“That look on your face is telling me otherwise,” you pointed to his red tinged ears.
“It wasn’t a date,” he repeated.
“Why are you so set on convincing me it wasn’t?” you turned around and asked him before entering your room.
“I-You-,” he cut himself off and shut his mouth.
“Smart move,” you raised your brows and unlocked the door, pushing it open.
“What’s all this?” James asked, stepping inside, noticing a few balloons and streamers along with a container and gift bag on the counter.
“Okay, I might have pushed your reservation because I felt bad for embarrassing you on your big day.”
“You did this? I thought you had dinner plans?” he asked.
“This was it,” you motioned to the room. “Well I had to go out to get some of the stuff and then I got lost and hungry so I got some food and then I did this.”
James walked over to the container and opened it, seeing a small cake inside that was decorated with icing and read:
Congrats on the paper Dr. Wilson
“Awe, well I guess you do have a heart,” James chuckled. “Thank you, this is really sweet.”
“Come on, we’re roommates,” you shrugged. “It was nothing.”
“Should I open this too?” James asked motioning to the gift bag.
You nodded your head and he peeked inside past the wrapping paper chuckling when he saw what was inside.
“I had to find a build-a-bear for that,” you explained. “I had a vision and I had a feeling no one else would be able to execute it.”
“A grandma doctor bear,” he said, pulling out the stuffed animal. “It’s perfect.”
He placed the plushie down next to the cake and came over to give you a big hug, followed by a kiss to your cheek.
“Even though we’ve been kind of in the midst of a really intense prank war I am still really proud of you,” you said while he was still holding on to you. “And you’re right, I didn’t come here because Cuddy forced me to, I wanted to be here when you had your moment, even though I kind of ruined it.”
“No, you didn’t ruin it,” he assured you. “It wasn’t lost on me how you didn’t insult my practice or my intelligence, just my personal life.”
“Yeah, cause that’s so much better,” you laughed, finally pulling away from the hug.
“In this case, it was probably the nicest way you could have embarrassed me,” he tapped your nose with his finger. “And I’ve had a lot of fun, probably more fun than if we hadn’t started this ridiculous back and forth.”
“So are you saying the game’s still on?” you asked.
“Oh, definitely,” he nodded. “It’s not over until we’ve checked out of the hotel.”
“And that is the best present you could have given me, you big snoring grandma doctor,” you hugged him again and he shook his head with a chuckle. “Now come on, let’s stop wasting time and eat this cake, according to the receptionist it's from the best bakery in Boston.”
You grabbed two forks from the table and handed one to James while he took the cake and brought it over to the bed, holding the container in one hand while you both went for it and took large bites of the rich dessert.
“This more than makes up for all the pranks, I’m gonna forgive you right now for all the stuff you have up your sleeve before you even do it.”
“Sorry, what did you say?” you asked, your mouth full of cake, completely distracted by the dessert.
“Nothing,” James chuckled and watched as you grabbed another big forkful and offered it to him.
He tried to fit it all in his mouth, but you had overestimated his jaw capacity and he was only able to get so much in before the rest fell back into the container.
You pressed your lips together trying to bite back a laugh at the sight of James’ overstuffed cheeks and it seemed like he was trying to do the same, only worse because he ended up spitting some cake crumbs on you.
“Jesus, James,” you groaned with a laugh, wiping the crumbs off your face. “That was gross.”
He retorted with a garbled response you couldn’t understand because of the food in his mouth and your confused features prompted him to swallow before speaking again.
“I’m sorry, but you just shoved half a cake into my mouth,” he chuckled.
“What happened to gratitude, I was feeding you, it’s a sign of love,” you exaggerated and so he copied your actions, getting a large piece on his fork and holding it up for you to eat, which you did much more masterfully than he did.
“There,” he said. “Is that enough love for you?”
“Plenty,” you nodded your head and watched as he placed the container down on the bed with his fork inside before reaching out for your face wiping some icing from beside your lips with his thumb. “Thanks,” you smiled, hoping he couldn’t feel your cheeks heat up slightly by his actions.
By the time the cake was half finished, you both couldn’t eat another bite and decided to save some for your last evening in the hotel.
After packing things up in the mini fridge, you began your routine for bed, watching as James stood in front of the mirror and carefully laid a strip across his nose before taking off his contacts and putting on his glasses instead.
“What are you looking at?” he asked.
“Nothing,” you shrugged. “You just look cute like that.”
“Cute?” he raised a brow and looked over at you and you nodded.
“Like a little kicked puppy.”
“That’s cute?” he now became concerned with your comparison. “Kicked puppies are not cute, that's just sad.”
“Now you definitely look like one,” you pointed to his distressed face and he pressed his lips into a line, unimpressed.
“Just be quiet and put your mouthguard in.”
“That doesn’t shut me up, James, just gives me a lisp.”
“Yeah, and it makes you look like a dork,” he retorted.
“That’s rich coming from the guy with glasses and a nose strip.”
He chose to ignore your comment, knowing the banter would go on forever if he didn’t, and instead focused on brushing his teeth and then climbing into bed with a crossword puzzle.
A short while after, you followed, climbing in on your side and turning so you could face James, observing him with his newspaper.
A part of you wanted to make a comment about his grandmotherly behaviour, but you settled on watching him for a few moments before pulling your eye mask over your face and going to sleep.
James turned his head towards you as soon as he didn’t feel your gaze on him any more. He smiled to himself, content with the scene in front of him.
“When did you even have time to do this?!”
You tried to bite back a laugh while putting on a touch of concealer under your eyes while looking into a small portable mirror you had brought with you.
James’ annoyed voice from the bathroom was only amplified when he walked out and saw your facade slowly start to crumble at the sight of him with baby powder blown all over his face and hair.
“I just took a shower.”
“Are you sure, cause you’ve got a little something…” you motioned to his face and he closed his eyes, inhaling deeply before letting out a cough from inhaling some of the powder.
“You’re getting me breakfast,” he said simply, returning to the washroom to take a second shower.
You burst out laughing once he had fully re-entered the washroom, taking a minute before continuing to get ready and then go downstairs and get some breakfast for you both.
Meanwhile, upstairs James was planning his comeback, figuring it would be good to go out with a bang.
You were totally unsuspecting, sitting in the first session, twiddling your thumbs while James took notes from the speaker.
You wished the speaker would talk about something more interesting so it would be easier to fight off the sleep that was coming, but before that could happen a man with a package went up to the organizer and whispered something in his ear. They paused the speech and the man made an announcement asking if you were in the room.
Confused, you raised your hand while he informed you that he had a package for you.
Unfortunately, by the time you realized what was happening, it was too late and the strip club music began to play while the man undressed in front of you.
You turned over to look at James, mortified, but he simply pulled out a digital camera and snapped a picture of what was happening while you gathered your senses and stood up, pushing the mostly unclothed man in front of you away and informing him he needed to leave.
James had his lips pressed together to hide a smile and you gingerly apologized to everyone for the mistake before sitting back down, wishing the ground would swallow you up whole.
“I am never going to live that down,” you whispered harshly to James.
“Thought we needed to end the conference with a bang,” he shrugged. “Don’t worry I told Cuddy to take you out of the conference rotation for a while so people forget about it by the next time we’re at one of these things.”
“Oh, you’re such a saint,” you said sarcastically.
You were thankful that since it was the last day the conference was scheduled to end a little earlier so you could go out, get a nice dinner and pretend to forget about that fact that James had called a stripper for you in the middle of a panel.
As an apology, James offered to pay for dinner and you didn’t hesitate to accept the offer, because as much as you both took a shine to pranking each other and making each other miserable, there was always something to sweeten the deal at the end.
“God, all that pranking was exhausting,” you sighed while making the walk back to the hotel, arm in arm with James.
“Maybe we should watch a movie or something to relax?” he suggested. “There must be something good on pay-per-view.”
“I could get behind that,” you nodded. “Get ready, watch a movie, and then an early night?”
“Yeah to go along with waking up early in the morning to drive back to Jersey.”
You chuckled a little and removed your arm from being linked with his, instead grabbing his hand out of his pocket and dragging him toward the hotel, not wanting to waste any time getting into more comfortable clothes.
You unlocked the door to the hotel room, letting out a surprised squeal when you felt James hands on your lower back tickling you and pushing you into the room.
You grabbed your pyjamas and quickly ran off to the washroom before James could and got changed, removing your makeup and putting your hair in your bonnet.
When you came out, James was already changed and ready, flipping through the movie options to see what was available.
“Hey, why does it say I rented six hours worth of porn?” he looked over at you and you pressed your lips together shrugging innocently. “You know that gets charged to the hospital, Cuddy is gonna see this.”
“I think I did what I had to do to get back at you for what you did this afternoon. You really thought I was gonna let you have the last laugh?” you asked, sitting on your side of the bed. “And the room was originally under your name so she won’t think it’s me so don’t try and flip this around on me.”
“Just for that I get to pick the movie and we’re watching your least favourite,” he flipped through the options and clicked on a movie he knew you hated, and before your could protest and grab your earplugs and eye mask he confiscated them saying you could get them back when the movie was over. You’d have to suffer through it.
Neither of you enjoyed the movie that evening, but you loved the back and forth nevertheless, no moment was safe, there was always a chance one of you would disturb the other’s peace.
After the movie was over, James went straight to bed while you stayed up just a little bit later, neatly packing some of your things away and as you watched James curled under the blankets you felt your hand grab a pen and paper from the desk and beginning to write a note, folding it nicely and putting it in James’ bag for him to find later, finally ready to spend one last night in this godforsaken hotel before heading back home to New Jersey.
“Have you seen my wallet, I can’t find it anywhere?” James asked, patting down his pockets to make sure he hadn’t put it there and forgotten.
“Did you check your work bag?” you asked, gathering your things together.
He shook his head and stuck his arm in his bag, digging around for his wallet until he felt something a little unfamiliar, looking down and noticing a paper he hadn’t seen before.
Curiously, he pulled it out and unfolded it, reading its contents quietly out loud.
“Dear James, I’m not normally shy, but spending time with you these past few days has shown me something that I think I could get used to seeing. You probably haven’t heard this a lot, but I think you’re as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside. The way you carry yourself, your eloquence, your demeanor, are all things that have inspired me to write to you. I’m not very good at expressing myself in words so I hope this short poem will do the trick. Roses are red, violets are blue, I think I’ve fallen in love with you. Love, your secret admirer.”
James looked at the paper confused then up at you with a disappointed look in his eyes.
“Seriously? Another one, I thought you got me last night?” he asked. “This is a little much, a secret admirer, like who would even…” his voice trailed off as he watched you look at him. He had to admit the look you were giving him was similar to what you’d look like when you’d bested him in a prank, but there was a hint of something else past your eyes that he hadn’t quite noticed until now. “Wait…this is from you. Like really from you.”
You nodded your head slowly, biting the inside of your cheek.
“You mean it?”
You nodded your head again.
“Seriously?”
Your lips were pressed in a thin line when you nodded your head for a third time.
Instead of addressing you, James pulled out his phone and dialled a number. You were about to turn around and pretend the whole interaction hadn’t happened when you felt your phone buzz in your purse.
Grabbing it, you saw James’ number flash on the screen so you answered it, albeit confused.
“Hello?”
“Hey, um I saw your ad in the paper,” he started. “It said you could make my dreams come true, but I was wondering if maybe I could make yours come true too?”
Your hand flew to cover your mouth as you began to laugh and James dropped his work bag on the ground, tossing his phone on the bed and coming over to you pulling you in by the waist and pressing a firm kiss to your lips, only to be broken up by giggles and laughter on both your parts.
You tossed your phone on the bed next to James’ and instead held his face in your hands, pressing repeated kisses to his lips, loving the way you could feel them pull into a smile against your own.
“Does this mean I get to see you again with all your sleep gear?” he asked between kisses, making you laugh again.
“Only if you get a C-PAP machine.”
“Deal,” he chuckled. “Hey, I’ve got a poem for you.”
“What is it?” you asked, pressing a kiss to his cheek.
“Roses are red, violets are blue, I feel pretty lucky that you fell in love with me too.”

James Wilson x Reader
~★~❤︎~✦~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“What are you doing here, shouldn't you be eating lunch with your wife?” House thought with you being pregnant Wilson would be too stressed to leave you alone for a second. He must still be processing it since he hasn’t bothered House with the details about the baby or even told him about it. He had to figure it out by himself.
“She's busy, I'm worried she's working herself to the bone” here he goes, he knew Wilson was going to be overprotective.
“She’s probably getting it out of her system before she’s to far along”
“What the hell are you talking about? Too far along with what?” Shit… Wilson didn’t know you were pregnant. Hes a doctor, how has he not noticed all the signs? There must be a reason you haven’t told him yet unless you didn’t know yet.  You have to know you have a bump. Then why are you not telling him, Maybe it's not Wilson. Nope that can’t be it. Only thing left is your purposely not telling Wilson. “House what are you talking about? Is something wrong with her?”
“Depends how you look at it” this is fun, House thinks to himself.
“HOUSE” Wilson Shouts, his heart beating out of his chest. Were you sick? Why would House know what's wrong with you and not him?
“Calm down Wilson she's not dying” Wilson was not going to leave him alone. Hes anxiously pacing his hands moving in frantic motion telling House just how rattled by his words he was. His future kid is in for a ride. “You should ask her”
“Are you messing with me? This is not funny House if something is wrong you need to tell me”
“She's pregnant” Wilson stops pacing immediately, staring at him with wide eyes. The words kept repeating in his head ‘She’s pregnant’ your pregnant, his wife. He's going to have a kid.
“House if your”
“I swear”
“I’m going to be a dad” Wilson just wants to see you. He has so many questions for you. Just as he's about to leave the room, his hand on the door a question pops in his mind. “Why did she tell you?”
“She didn’t”
“Then how do you know?”
“I know when a woman is pregnant” Wilson just stares at him like he has three heads. House just told him he's going to be a dad with no proof.
“Are you kidding me House?” it was a fair question he let Wilson believe he was going to be a dad with no proof other than ‘I know when a woman’s pregnant’
“Just go ask her and she’ll tell you” that's all Wilson could do now. He left Houses office in search of you. Luckily he found you almost right away. Seeing you though just made his nerves skyrocket. He wanted to be a father, he wanted you to be pregnant, and if you tell him you're not he’s going to be heartbroken.
“Hey Love, what are you doing here?” you press a sweet kiss to his cheek. He gives you a small smile.
“I need to ask you something,” you don’t think you’ve ever seen James so serious. “Are you pregnant?” That is the last thing you expected out of his mouth. You stand there for a moment unsure of what to say. You could lie and tell him when you intended to but he looks like he might just cry. You're not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
“Yes” as soon as the words left your mouth James is engulfing you in a hug. You can feel his tears soaking your shirt. He’s pulling away a second later with tears still on his face. The biggest smile on his face, you can’t but smile too. “I was trying to figure out how to tell you, How did you find out?”
“House”  thats all the explanation you need

Fury
Summary: When Bucky's jealous of Steve, there's only one way to calm the storm— and it involves taking you hard and fast.
Pairings           : Bucky Barnes x Female Reader
Note                 : rough sex, blowjob, jealousy
Tumblr media
The tension was suffocating the second you walked back into the room. Bucky was leaning against the wall, arms crossed, his jaw clenched so tight you could almost hear the grinding. He didn’t even need to say anything. His eyes—stormy, dark, and fixed on you—were enough to tell you what kind of mood he was in.
You didn’t do anything wrong, at least not intentionally. Steve had been the one who came over, his usual friendly self, maybe standing a little too close, maybe cracking one too many jokes. But it wasn’t like you were encouraging him. Hell, you barely even noticed until you saw the way Bucky’s eyes tracked every single move Steve made around you, like a predator sizing up his prey. The moment Steve walked out of the room, Bucky’s whole demeanor shifted—dangerous, possessive.
And now, here you were, the air thick with the kind of jealousy that could either end in a fight or something way more explosive.
He finally spoke, his voice low and rough. “You looked real comfortable with Steve, huh?”
You froze. Bucky wasn’t one for idle jealousy—when he got possessive, it was something primal, something that burned hot and fast, a storm you either weathered or drowned in. And right now, you were treading water.
“It wasn’t like that,” you muttered, trying to keep your voice steady. But you knew that wouldn’t fly. Not with him.
“Wasn’t it?” He pushed off the wall, taking slow, deliberate steps towards you, each one sending a wave of heat through your body. “Looked like he couldn’t keep his fuckin’ eyes off you. And you? You just let it happen.”
You opened your mouth to protest, but the look he gave you shut it right down. His hand was on you in an instant, his metal fingers curling around the back of your neck, pulling you close enough to feel the heat radiating off his body.
“You think you can let Steve get that close to you and I wouldn’t do something about it?” His breath was hot against your skin, his voice thick with that dangerous edge. “You’re mine.”
You shivered at the possessiveness in his tone, feeling that familiar pull low in your belly, the one that always came when Bucky got like this—jealous, furious, and desperate to remind you just who you belonged to.
“Bucky—” you tried, but his grip tightened just enough to stop you.
“Shut up.” His words were sharp, demanding, and your knees felt weak. He spun you around so fast you barely had time to catch your breath before you were pressed against the nearest wall, his body pinning you there, hard and unrelenting. “I’m gonna fuckin’ show you what happens when you let another man get close.”
His hand slid down your back, over the curve of your ass, gripping it roughly before he yanked your jeans down in one swift move. You gasped, your palms flat against the cold wall as he kicked your legs apart with his foot. His hand came down on your bare skin, a sharp slap that sent a shockwave of pleasure and pain shooting through you.
“Fuckin’ Steve...” he muttered darkly, another slap making you bite back a moan. “Think he can look at you like that?” His breath was hot on your neck. “Hear that, baby? You’re gonna scream for me, so loud, I want him to hear you.”
Before you could process the thought, he was pushing your face down against the wall, his fingers finding your heat, rough and fast, teasing you until you were a mess of whimpers and gasps. “Already so wet, huh?” he growled, pressing himself against you from behind, letting you feel just how hard he was.
You pushed back against him, needing more, needing him to just take what he wanted already, but he wasn’t giving in that easy. He always liked to make you wait, drag it out, make you beg for it. And you were close—so close to begging. But he didn’t give you the chance.
“Fuck this,” he growled, and then he was inside you, hard and fast, filling you completely in one brutal thrust. You cried out, your hands scrambling for something to hold onto, but there was nothing but the cold, unyielding wall in front of you.
“Bucky!” His name tore from your throat, a mix of pleasure and pain as he fucked you, each thrust harder than the last. His hands gripped your hips, pulling you back against him with every rough movement, your body jerking forward from the force of it.
“Yeah, that’s right, baby. Let Steve hear you. Let him know who fucks you like this.” His voice was dark, gravelly, and full of possessive fury.
The sound of skin slapping against skin filled the room, your moans and gasps echoing off the walls. Bucky didn’t let up, didn’t slow down—he was relentless, driving into you with a raw, animalistic need. And fuck, you loved it. Loved the way he lost control when he got jealous, the way his hands gripped you so hard you were sure they’d leave bruises. Loved the way he made you feel like you were the only thing that mattered.
You were close, so close, and Bucky knew it. He could always tell.
“You gonna come for me, baby?” His hand slipped down between your legs, his fingers finding your clit and rubbing it in tight circles. “Gonna scream for me?”
You were already screaming, your body trembling, barely holding on as he pushed you closer and closer to the edge. And when you finally fell, it was like a fucking explosion, your whole body shattering as you came hard around him, your cries echoing in the small space.
But Bucky wasn’t done.
He pulled out suddenly, flipping you over onto your back, and before you could catch your breath, he was pushing you down to your knees.
“Open your mouth,” he demanded, his voice rough and commanding. You did as you were told, your lips parting just in time as he pushed himself past them, rough and demanding. You gagged slightly as he hit the back of your throat, but he didn’t care. He was too far gone, too consumed by jealousy and lust.
He fucked your mouth with the same intensity he’d fucked you before, his hand gripping the back of your head, guiding your movements as you sucked him. You could feel him twitching, hear his breath coming out in harsh pants as he neared his release.
“Fuck, baby,” he groaned, his hips jerking forward as he came, spilling himself down your throat. He held you there for a moment, making sure you swallowed every drop before finally letting go.
You collapsed against him, your legs weak, your body trembling, and Bucky pulled you up, his arms wrapping around you possessively.
“You’re mine,” he growled into your ear, his breath still ragged. “Don’t you ever forget that.”
