Meduza: “Russian spies are back,” declares new British study
Summarizing a new study by the Royal United Services Institute think tank, The Economist describes how Russia’s spy community has “adjusted its tradecraft” in the aftermath of the mistakes ahead of the Ukraine invasion and embarked on “a new phase of political warfare against the West.” In the new study, analysts Jack Watling and Nick Reynolds report that Kremlin domestic polity czar Sergey Kiriyenko is now in charge of “coordinating operations against the West and then measuring their effect.” They say Kiriyenko has ushered in “more coherent propaganda campaigns.”
Meanwhile, the Military Intelligence Directorate (GRU) has learned to reduce the “digital breadcrumbs” it was leaving for investigative outlets like Bellingcat, and a “wholesale reform” of the agency recruits more agents from outside the military, keeping more names and details out of government records. The flood of exiles after the February 2022 invasion has actually provided Moscow with a large population of people who can be threatened into acting as agents. This recruiting pool is spreading in Germany, moreover, “thanks in part to Baltic countries having grown more hostile to Russian emigres.”
Even Yevgeny Prigozhin’s mutiny proved to be an opportunity for Russian spies, say Watling and Reynolds, explaining that the intelligence community carved up his “sprawling military-criminal enterprise,” with the FSB grabbing the domestic businesses, the Foreign Intelligence Service taking the “media arms,” and the GRU getting “the foreign military bits.”

"Downtime" is a 1995 direct-to-video film linked to the "Doctor Who" saga.
When her father's will is delivered to her, Victoria Waterfield (Deborah Watling) gets convinced she can find him again in Det-Sen Monastery in Tibet. However, she only finds the Great Intelligence there and she loses consciousness. When she awakens, she finds that an explosion has destroyed the monastery. Back in London, she's contacted by Professor Edward Travers (Jack Watling), who offers her a purpose in developing the New World University.
After 15 years of work, New World University seems to have achieved its goals but Victoria Waterfield needs another item and she hires Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) to find it. Meanwhile, Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney) wakes up from a strange three-day sleep and the situation becomes even stranger when he's contacted by Daniel Hinton (Mark Trotman), a former student of the school where he taught, who tells a strange story. The key may be in the hands of his daughter Kate (Beverley Cressman).

Companions getting back
Susan got stranded on mars causing the crispy master, then somehow got back to gallifrey, got a tardis, and time travelled with ping cho. During their time travels they of course met the other companions.
Vicki, I imagine that the rescue team found her and she's now Administrator Pallister of UNIT. She time travels through UNIT.
Steven, he got left by the Doctor against his will, so of course just after the Doctor is gone, he goes back to Earth and is eventually Spacefleet Brigadier Taylor of UNIT. So he can time travel too.
Ben and Polly, they're propably just off frame chatting to Barbara, maybe with children and grandchildren too. And Dodo is also chatting to them or Steven.
Victoria, you know how her father invented a time machine? And how the Harrises were only a lil older than her and did'nt want her? Well, when shes in our present she's part of the support group, in the past she has that academy in Tibet and of course has her son Edward Travers, who would be born in 1891, 39 years younger than Victoria, and thus her youngest child to Victoria and her husband Lyndon, thus also making her the sister in law to Ben Travers who would be born in 1861 and thus 9 years younger than Victoria. What, you don't think Travers is the son to Victoria? Of course he is. He looks a lot like Victoria (since Jack and Deborah Watling are father and daughter), his name is the same as Victoria's father, and he is tied with the same university\location that Victoria ends up working at. He is pretending that he is'nt Victoria's son because he can't reveal such until Season 6B. Which is why Moffat invented River Song. Or something.
Jamie and Zoe, I think they got their memories back during 6B, and are able to time travel through Victoria.
The UNIT guys and Liz, of course they're there. Maybe they're just offscreen.
Harry was one of the Cybermen in Missy's army, and then he was in Trap Street, could he have got a shimmer of his physical self? Or maybe he could still be alive and got back from being lost in the jungle.
Sarah Jane, with so many time shenanigans around I bet someone managed to resurrect her under a new alias or something. Or they could time travel to somewhen before she dies.
Leela and Romana, well, Romana would be Lord President of Gallifrey, Leela would be her companion but also have a life back on her planet, she could have a son with Calib and daughter with Tomas to continue the legacy of the Sevateem. Or maybe she has her Tesh husband from that other timeline, they could unify the two tribes. Which means they could also visit. And Romana also time travels with Narvin, Braxatiel, and Duggan.
Adric, maybe Ashildr could save him. He could get back to E-Space. But he'd be on Trap Street at one point.
Nyssa, well, apparently she married Tegan, I'd assume Terminus could have some time travel capabilities to get Nyssa back with Tegan and the rest of the Space Teenagers. Of course she could still usually be on Terminus.
Turlough, apparently he's Trion's Emperor and also opened the CVE's. Maybe he has a Trion Imperial Battleship or something like that, Adric could work there, they could pair up Adric and Turlough.
I also want new Trion, Traken, and Alzarius scenes. Yes. If Gallifrey and Skaro can be brought back so can Traken, where Luvic gives his Keepership to someone less midwitted so the planet can go back to N-Space.
Peri fricked off back to Earth as soon as Yrcanos keeled over, and propably married Grace Holloway. Or maybe not.
Mel got to Earth via Glitz. And propably is married to Ace.
Rose and Mia could end up getting back to the main universe, through Torchwood. Jack Harkness too.
The Smith-Jones family is propably just offscreen.
Donna Noble, propably she got her memories back somehow, perhaps through Clara and Ashildr or through the Celestial Toymaker.
Amy and Rory propably got to go back home through River, Clara+Ashildr, or Bill+Heather.
Clara and Ashildr, Bill and Heather, those are immortal time travelling couples and could come back that way.
And the fam, Ryan's propably just offscreen.

Fly low, be aggressive - how Ukrainian pilots fought against the Russian Air Force until the stoppage
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/13/2022 - 13:12 in Military
Despite all its profound flaws, the Russian Air Force has many new and highly sophisticated fighters. They have better sensors, weapons and defensive equipment than the fighters of the Ukrainian air force itself, which are less numerous. How did Ukrainian pilots fight against this inequality in numbers?
Ukrainian pilots in their older and roughest jets fought against Russian pilots in the first weeks of Russia's broader war against Ukraine flying low and being more aggressive.
The approximately 200 Sukhoi Su-30SM and Su-35S fighters from Russia, none older than a few years, “overcome the Ukrainian air force fighters at a technical level,” Justin Bronk, Nick Reynolds and Jack Watling of the London-based Royal United Services Institude, wrote in their definitive study of the Ukrainian air war.
Tumblr media
The Su-30 and Su-35 are derived from the classic twin-engine Sukhoi Su-27, but with improved electronics and weaponry. The big difference between the two is that the Su-30 accommodates two. The Su-35 is a single-seater plane.
About five years ago, the Russian air force began acquiring the Su-30SM and Su-35S to replace hundreds of Soviet Su-27s and gain time for Sukhoi to continue developing and producing the new and problematic Su-57 stealth.
The Russian air force unvealed most of its Su-30s and Su-35s into the war in Ukraine, positioning them at air bases in southwestern Russia, Belarus and occupied Crimea. At the beginning of the broader war at the end of February, the Su-30 and Su-35 regiments - along with regiments flying Sukhoi Su-34 bombers - launched their jets into the air, accumulating about 140 missions per day, according to Bronk, Reynolds and Watling.
Tumblr media
“The Su-35S and Su-30SM fighters flew at various altitudes [air combat patrols] at about 30,000 feet in support of medium-altitude Russian attack aircraft operating widely during the first three days,” RUSI analysts explained.
They surpassed - and also in smaller numbers - the 30-year-old Su-27 and MiG-29 of the Ukrainian air force. The Vympel R-77-1 air-to-air missiles of the Russian jets were an important advantage. The R-77-1 has active radar orientation. A pilot briefly turns on his radar, designates a target, fires a missile, then turns off his radar and takes an evasive action. The missile then uses its own internal radar to guide it to its target.
On the other hand, the older Vympel R-27R/ER missiles of the Ukrainians are semi-active, which means that a pilot must continuously illuminate a target as the missile approaches. He can't be silent. He can't dodge. In addition, the R-77-1 reaches up to 60 miles. The range of the R-27 itself usually reaches a maximum of 50 miles.
Tumblr media
Thus, Russian pilots were shooting Ukrainian pilots from further away than Ukrainian pilots could shoot back - and were also capable of evasive maneuvers much more effective than Ukrainians could perform.
As a result, Russian regiments quickly overthrew several Ukrainian Su-27 and MiG-29. Each loss eroding the pre-war inventory of the Ukrainian air force of about 30 Su-27s and 50 or more MiG-29s.
Yes, the Ukrainians would eventually replace many of these losses by restoring old fuselages that were once impossible to fly and removing the pilots from retirement. In those first intoxicating weeks, however, it may have seemed that the Russian air force would lead the Ukrainian air force to extinction.
But that's not how it happened. Ukrainian pilots adopted new tactics - and stood firm, wrote Bronk, Reynolds and Watling. “The deeply uneven performance of the radar and missile compared to Russian fighters, in addition to being tactically at a disadvantage of up to 15 to two in some cases, forced Ukrainian pilots to fly extremely low to try to explore the confusion of the ground and the masking of the terrain to get close enough fire before being hired."
Tumblr media
Ukrainian MiGs and Sukhois, flying at the level of the treetops, sneaked over the Russian Sukhois, mixing with the landscape before - at the last moment - appearing to fire their missiles. “Agressive Ukrainian tactics and good use of low-level terrain during the first days of the invasion led to several claims and several probable deaths ?? against Russian aircraft, although Ukrainian fighters were shot down or damaged in the process," added the analysts.
Ukrainian pilots have overthrown enough Russian pilots to scare the Kremlin. “After three days of skirmishes in which both sides lost aircraft, there was a remarkable pause in Russian attacks and hunting missions venturing behind the Ukrainian lines, which lasted several days,” Bronk, Reynolds and Watling explained.
Tumblr media
After that, the Russians changed their tactics. The attack pilots flew extremely low, just as the Ukrainian crews were doing. Fighter pilots conducting air-to-air patrols while flying higher and remaining on the Russian side of the front line.
This, of course, risked putting air superiority patrols too far from the front to intercept Ukrainian planes. No wonder that, this summer, the Russian air force was strongly supported by its 90 or more Mikoyan MiG-31BM interceptors for combat air patrols. The MiG-31's Vympel R-37M missile can hit targets up to 320 kilometers away.
Tumblr media
MiG-31K.
“The long range of the R-37M, together with the very high performance and high operating altitude of the MiG-31BM, also allows significant freedom to threaten Ukrainian aircraft near the front lines outside the range of Ukrainian defenses,” the RUSI team said.
It is revealing that of the 60 fixed-wing planes that the Russians lost in the war, only one was a MiG-31 - and accidentally crashed. But the R-37M is not infallible and not all missiles strike. The MiG-31s are bleeding the Ukrainian air force, but - so far - not fatally.
The Ukrainian air force, since February, has lost 51 fixed- wing aircraft. Proportionally, Ukraine's losses are much more pronounced than those of Russia. But the Ukrainian air force is still flying and fighting - compensating with aggressiveness and creativity what it lacks in numbers and high technology.
