Guys, you know the whole “James’ type is people who are mean to him” thing?

I think it’s because they make him feel like a real person.

I am forever pushing the “James struggles with feeling like a real person agenda” and I think that initially Lily/Regulus genuinely didn’t like him as a person and that is what made him initially attracted to them. James is one of those “everyone loves him, he’s a literal ball of sunshine” people. But James is nothing if not a people pleaser so he’s always trying to be someone that people like and sometimes he’s not sure that the person he is, is real or just an act.

But they don’t like the person that he shows everyone (because they can subconsciously feel that something is off with James). And no one (excluding Snape and people he doesn’t like because he’s not performing for them) has ever told James that they don’t like him.

So he tries to win both of them over but it doesn’t work because he’s trying to win them over with this not-real-person side of himself and he only wins them over once they see the real James. So by not liking this fake person and seeing through his mask they’re inadvertently helping him learn how to be himself and not be putting on a show all the time.

james potter would make the perfect 80s movie jock. like he would rock those jersey crop tops and tiny little shorts over a pair of gray sweatpants with some pristine white sneakers. he has a red sports car that he and his pa spend the weekends working on and it's his pride and joy (no one else can drive it.) he's ridiculously rich, unfairly fit, a class clown but still super smart, and the definition of being a heartthrob. he could have anyone he wants but he's doomed to pine after the one person that doesn't give him the time of day. not to mention the character arc he'd have!!! anyways i love him

Jegulus is so funny bc like “oh, my brother replaced me with some guy? I’m gonna steal him and make him my bf.”

Regulily is even more funny bc “oh, my brother replaced me with some guy? I’m gonna date the girl that guy has been openly in love with for years.”

AU where Lily got sorted into Slytherin and became best friends with Regulus cause you know they would hit it off. Anyways fast forward a couple of years and Regulus is basically gathering information from Voldemort as a spy and passing it to Lily and together they find out about the horcruxes so they go on a horcrux hunt and obviously they’re going to be successful cause have you met a more fearsome and competent duo?? Anyways once they win the war they go to Dumbledore and (very petty but well deserved) say that they accomplished more at 19 years old in the span of two weeks then he did in decades

jegulily + trans reg,,, where sirius makes his 'sister' hang out in the gryffindor common room for mandatory sibling time. reg ends up bonding w the girls and becoming lily's bi awakening. they date for a while until reg breaks up with her when he needs some space to figure out his gender. lily starts dating james and reg doesn't visit gryffindor tower for a few months but after a while on testosterone he comes back. cue james' bi awakening. lily nods understandingly in the background

Fans will write a Jegulily or Jegulus + Jily fic and make it very apparent that they prefer James with Regulus over Lily, even though they claim that James loves them both equally and make James go on and on about how much he just loves Lily.

They’ll literally have James always moping around thinking about Regulus (and never Lily, or even if he does mope around about her, it’s only for a second than he’s right back on Regulus), and how him not being there feels like a big part of him is missing. It’ll literally be poetry that they’re both spitting at each other, while with Lily, it’s only ever how much she deserves better than James and how beautiful she is. If there does happen to be some poetic words for Jily, it’s only ever one-sided (on James’ part) because I guess Lily is just too good for him? Idk.

They’ll even make little side stories, but it’s all just Jegulus (or other things, but no Jily), or it’ll be like an au of the future or a future James wants or something and it’s once again just Jegulus, Lily is no where in sight.

Loves her so much he barely thinks about her. Maybe she does deserve better.
