also please ignore my horrible Italian. I always mix it up with Spanish because I never learned either language properly.

Tolkien and translations: Italy's debate over the newest translation of "The fellowship of the ring".
So, I am going to keep things shortand simple here, because I am not trying to write an essay here.
So, the first translation was made by Vittoria Alliata di Villafranca and it appears that this was the translation that had been approved by Tolkien himself.
Her translation oficially was published by publishing house Rusconi in 1970 after being revised by Quirino Principe. This edition was then discontinued and if you ind any copy it is gonna cost a lot of money.
In 2003 publishing house Bompiani picked up once again Alliata's translation, kind of undid Principe's corrections and added stuff that the Italian Tolkien Society suggested, made it pretty and this is the edition I currently have with me. It isa very poetic and epic translation, maybe with too many words sometimes, but no one had any issue reading it.
Bompiani was recently forced to retire and discontinue this edition and a lot of the fans have pointed the finger at the newest translation, the one made by Ottavio Fatica, which is not very popular for the Choices™ he decided to make. It seems that this was claimed by the translator as the one and only and this had already made a lot of the fans not exactly thrilled.
Now, when you are translating something the tone is everything.
The idea behind Fatica's translation was that it hadto be easier to read, hence the epic tone in the Alliata's translation is almost gone. It's the everyday now. He uses different linguistic registers depending on who is speaking and what social class they are from, which was not something Alliata's translation did. He did his research and he talks ostensibly about his choics in his interviews.
My personal opinion is that this translation sucks. I have read it, I have seen the debate. The epic tone was kind of Tolkien's heart in storytelling, I think a lot of that got truly lost in this newest edition.
And I am sorry, but I read the Alliata's translation at age 15 and it was easy enough, so personally I think that a lot of the choices made were not the way. On top of it the movies followed in the dub with the Alliata's translation and tone and it's gonna cause mayhem.
I don't like changes like the word "ranger", translated in the Alliata as"ramingo", used for Aragorn changed into "forestale".
Like, we use "forestale" to point at the guy who takes care of the woodland and whilst I can see the leap I still prefer the word "ramingo" (i.e. a person who travels, a nomad, which kind of feels more what Aragorn is at the beginning).
In general he uses italian words, but in a completely different meaning than what we actually use them for - and I don't personally think this makes the reading easier. If anything I feel very confused.
To me it just feels like a downgrade, but a lot of new fans are all head over heels for this new translation.
At the end of the day I am not forced to read the newest translation, I have the Alliata's one and I plan on buying the books in English too. It doesn't affect me personally, but this whole shctik of making the reading easier just speaks to me like we have suddenly become stupid and can't read anything more complex than a children's book, which honestly is a bit insulting.
But it is what it is now.
I am sad, but at the end of the day there is nothing I can do.
Feel free to ask any questions, I will do my best to reply :)

" Non è mai notte quando vedo il tuo volto; perciò ora a me non sembra che sia notte, né che il bosco sia spopolato e solitario, perché tu per me sei il mondo intero; chi potrà dunque dire che io sono sola se il mondo è qui a guardarmi? ”

They translated "Bub" with "bomber" after 40 years of a completely different translation. Also, BOMBER?! They used the Gen-z slang for a guy born in 1800?!

I was rewatching Community in italian and noticed how a lot of jokes about Troy and Abed's supposed relationship got translated to not be as ambigous.
For example, in the "I love you" "I know" scene in Epidemiology, in the italian dub Troy says "I won't forget you" (even if in the dub of the scene it's referencing it still says "I love you"), in the Halloween episode of season 4, the scene "You should also tell your boyfriend's boyfriend" it's translated to "your little friend's little friend" (I didn't know how else to translate "amichetto"), in Convention of Time and Space, when Britta says "that dude it's trying to steal your boyfriend", boyfriend is changed to best friend and so on.
The question is, why change the jokes? I'm aware Italy is really homophobic, but if that's the case why don't keep the jokes? It's not like they were extremely queer-friendly or anything

Funny (and absurd) italian translations of Warrriors names:
Pelogrigio/Grayfur: Mousefur (she is still described as a brown cat)

Baffetto/Littlewhisker: Onewhisker (this is kinda cute actually)
Piedeveloce/Swiftfoot: Runningwind
Batuffolodineve/Snowswab: Snowkit
Mantodilampone/Raspberrypelt: Tawnypelt (I guess they did this to pair her with her brother Brambleclaw)
Peloditornado/Tornadofur: Stormfur
Ciccio/Chubby: Purdy
Chiccod'orzo/Barleyseed: Barley
Attila: Scourge
Mantodilava/Lavapelt: Cinderpelt
Pelobruno/darkbrownfur: Russetfur
Granito/Granite: Stonefur
Ormascura/Darkfootprint: Mistyfoot
Stellacadente/Shootingstar: Croockedstar
Oh but it gets worse...
Lozoppo/theh*bbled: Deadfoot
Loscorticato/theflayed: Barkface
Guercia/Sq*inter: One-eye (I don't understand why they didn't called her Occhietto like Onewhisker)
Losfregiato/thedisfigured: Clawface

If only there was an extra second each year, so to take a deep breath, ease the tension in one's shoulders.
Calcutta
As if I wouldn't just waste it worrying about what I should do with it, read? meditate? look out the window, breathe in the smell of rain? study? But, really, what should I do? Nothing, because the second has passed and I have never been more out of breath.
(original: servirebbe un secondo più all'anno, per fare un respiro profondo, per rilassare le spalle)

Naomi Klein’s Doppelgänger’s Italian Doppelgänger: Misadventures in Translation
by Wu Ming 1
In a longform article on climate change and conspiracy fantasies which Internazionale magazine is publishing in two installments, I quoted and commented on several passages from Naomi Klein‘s latest book, Doppelgänger: A Trip into the Mirror World. I read it in English about two months ago, and I consider it an important work, one it is useful to engage with.
For those quotations, I thought it was right, as well as formally correct, to use the official Italian translation. It was recently published by la Nave di Teseo—henceforth NdT—with the title Doppio. Il mio viaggio nel mondo specchio. So I bought the electronic edition, and looked up the passages I had to quote. I was astonished. I did some spot-checking, and astonishment became discomfort.
