Barbie Movie [4/10]

The costumes, set design, and music were all really well done. That said, the plot was just tripping over itself in trying to get the message across. I felt like I was watching three different Barbie movie concepts that were being squished together.

The fact that Ken was exposed to the patriarchy of outside and brought it to Barbieland was an interesting idea that was completely botched. The problem with the patriarchy is that it is harmful and causes damage to the people living within it. Women are oppressed and are able to be harmed and objectified without recourse while men are supressed and forced into toxic positions to hold up to a masculine ideal. But in the movie the Barbies loved it! Literally were having so much fun. The Kens were also living the life after finally getting some kind of respect.

The Barbies were just magically brainwashed with no explanation other than "they have no defenses like the Native Americans with smallpox". That was a stupid reason and makes no sense. He managed to do this in what like 20 minutes or like an hour? How? Since when do Kens have the power of controlling minds? Did he just ramble about horses and beer and every Barbie and Ken just fell in line? Wtf??? I understand the point the movie was trying to make but the execution was awful. Especially since the movie already established that Barbies don't really take Kens seriously anyways. But because the movie needs to make the point that little girls grow up in a world that minimizes their dreams we need Ken to brainwash the smartest women in the land.

Then we get to the second part where patriarchy also hurts men. Be honest, that was also weak sauce. Ken throws a fit and cries that he just wanted to be recognized but that falls flat when a majority of his speech is actually about his unrequited feelings for Barbie. So then its not actually about respect its about him being in love. And then you have another Ken chime in that he misses his best friend Barbie in a throwaway line. It was just far far too short of an interaction to show that these Kens did not enjoy patriarchy. This is also only verbalized after the Kens lose. An apology after a loss is just not as sincere as one made organically. If the Kens had realized during their whole Kendom that they missed thier Barbies and were not having as much as fun as they thought and then apologized it would have been more impact full. It was a movie trying to push a feminist message but it just couldn't quite get there.

Then you have the secondary plot with the little girl and the mom that is completely unnecessary. The Sasha character was just not endearing nor did she have any role in the movie. There wasn't even a reconciliation scene for Sasha and Barbie. Why set up that montage of them playing together? Why have Sasha tear Barbie apart emotionally? What was the point if there is no scene of Barbie and Sasha actually talking to each other. Or a scene of Sasha realizing what Barbie actually values and apologizing for the things she had said? In fact, Sasha should have been the one to motivate Barbie. She and Barbie are both transitioning from the innocent child into an adolescent. She could speak to Barbie about how it feels to suddenly be sexualized and how she became tough as a way to fight against it. Or how she herself is dealing with all those teenage emotions and her own awareness of her mortality. It felt as if Greta was planning something there but it just didn't fit.

The mother-daughter conflict was also just dropped once it became clear there just wasn't enough time for it. If Gloria was going to be the human that Barbie connected to the most then she should have just been Gloria's Barbie!! That would have solved many of my main criticisms with Sasha. If Barbie had belonged to Gloria then her arc makes sense. I could have also seen Barbie being an instrumental figure in bridging together Sasha and Gloria. Similar to Life-Size where the doll turned human is able to bring joy and self-confidence into a broken family. But again there was just not enough time so we had to speed past this little plot point.

There were so many excellent ideas in this movie. However not a single one was given the time and effort needed to fully flesh them out. A movie with such amazing potential should have been able to completely blow its audience away. Unfortunately this movie was just drowning in itself. I will say that the What Was I Made For? scene was absolutely heart wrenching. It was the best scene of the movie and I could watch that over and over again. I just wish that the rest of the movie was able to match that.

4/10 very funny and beautiful movie but the plot drags those points down

I think a lot about Leo standing up for his brothers in the things that really matter to them.

Like- Leo is the one who immediately pushes Mikey and Donnie into finding Raph the second it’s clear that their oldest brother is missing because he knows Raph can’t handle being separated like that.

Leo is the one who stands up for Mikey when Mikey wants to go on a solo mission, actively vouching for him and being the one to convince Raph into letting Mikey go, because being independent and proving himself just as capable of standing on his own two feet as everyone else means so much to Mikey.

And Leo defends Donnie’s honor in particular when his brothers’ intelligence is insulted because Leo is well aware of how important Donnie’s smarts are to him - and how important having those smarts valued and acknowledged is as well.

All this goes right into just how well Leo knows his brothers. For as much as he’ll tease or fight with them, he knows them, and he loves them.

Iterations of Maria's death where she makes the choice to sacrifice herself are so important to me. Yeah, the iterations where she's just collateral damage are tragic, but I love the agency the sacrifice gives her.

In Sonic X and the fan film Project Shadow, she stands in front of the GUN soldiers, with guns in her face, her hand on the release lever, she's fucking. 12? 13? And she pulls the lever, knowing she will be shot, knowing she can't go to Earth with Shadow anyway. She chooses to die for him, to give him a chance to get away, even if the sacrifice didn't last, and he ended up captured later, it was her choice.

Shadow is the Ultimate Lifeform, and Maria was a sick little girl, and she chose to put herself between him and the soldiers, because that's her little brother, and she'd be damned if she let them get him too.

Yeah, I think they would be! Feferi is one of the trolls who takes dying the least badly (relentless optimism) and Eridan does genuinely feel bad, which means a lot when it's Eridan. I think she really is genuine when she says she wants them to be friends and also that she's really not the type of person to hold a grudge, and like... death is SUPER cheap in Homestuck, it's really not the horrific, irredeemable, irreperable damage that it is IRL - and if you're talking about (Feferi) and (Eridan), then they're both dead (and irrelevent) now, so the score is kind of even.

In general, the fandom - I mean, people in general, really - tend to have difficulty divorcing themselves from other people. We tend to assume that the people and characters they like will hold similar opinions to themselves. This is how people who like Karkat and don't like Eridan can mentally gloss over or even block out their clear, close friendship, or how people who dislike Cronus can end up overlooking that Meenah actually takes his opinion seriously and unironically defends his wizard thing. Feferi really isn't mad at Eridan or upset about dying the way we probably would be, because she's friends with the horrorterrors, relentlessly cheerful, comfortable with death in general, and death is also just not really that big of a deal in this setting. "I'm really sorry about that, that was shitty of me" is honestly probably all the apology she needs, especially if they came back to life anyway.

It's kind of a weird (not sure if good or bad or just neutral!) experience to realize that a lot of the personal headcanons I've written into my own writing have become well-known enough that they're treated as general fanon with a lot of people using them and not realizing that they, like, originated from a specific place rather than just being ambiently popular. Every once in a while I come across a fic where there's an AN that says something to the tune of, "Oh, I saw this popular headcanon that [insert something really specific from 666: Live On Air!] and wanted to[...]" without attributing it to me - or, most likely, even realizing that it came from me!

It's an interesting feeling! I think the times that actually bother me are when it's people that know they got the headcanon directly from me and choose not to credit me (or in one weird instance, credit me, then edit their stuff to bury the credit to be really hard to find for some reason - y'all, I do notice these things even when I don't comment on them).

I've been straight up plagiarized many times before. It's ranged from friends in RP groups stealing my characters because I wasn't using them often anymore, to more recently someone ripping out chunks of one of my Hazbin Hotel fics and rewriting it as their own. It's a uniquely horrible feeling, and I think it makes me sensitive to feeling uncredited as a result even when plagiarism isn't occuring. On the other hand, this is literally how headcanons evolve and I'm actually so fucking happy that specific things that I was outright nervous to post because I thought people would (and in a few cases, people did) react very poorly to them are now, like...fairly common fanon.

Anyway, I don't think it's wrong for people to carry forward headcanons to the point where they don't even know where they came from. I also think most likely some concepts became convergently popular when more than one person had the same thought! It's how fandoms work and I know for a fact I've done the same... but it does very much give me the warm and fuzzies when people that use my ideas do give a nod in my direction for where they got the inspiration! In return, I try to make a point to do the same.

AU WB infodump: In my SM personal setting/AU I like to see "power-ups" as magic items (some natural, some artificial) that are commonly found all around the world but that are very common in the Mushroom Kingdom specifically (it is one of the most magic-filled regions in the World). Guards and Heroes of the Kingdom have always been familiar with them.

Still in my AU, the Dark Lands & Bowser Army know magic thanks to Magikoopa Orders and some artificial-magical weapons they produce, but they are not used to "power-ups", especially for fights. Some Bowser's Minions even claim that Mario & his friends are basically "cheating" when they fight with unpredictable power-ups.
