It's been a hell of a few months since I last posted anything...

I got a couple of WIPs finished, I visited family I hadn't seen in ages, my department at work has lost four people (and only one has been replaced; one is moving to a different position and is staying in my department until we can find at least one replacement; another has left already, and the other is leaving next week), and we have some major system changes at work that are going to throw my short-handed department into further chaos for at least a week.

My ass also violently met the stairs last night (I misjudged where a stair was, my foot slipped off the edge, and the only reason I didn't slide all the way to the bottom was because I was holding onto the railing), too. Definitely bruised my tailbone but I probably didn't break anything. I'm sore but not in any great pain.

While I was in Michigan visiting family, I asked my sister if we could hit up a couple local yarn shops since there are three in a reasonable radius of her house. We ended up only visiting one because the first one we visited was heavenly (Ewe-nique Knits in Royal Oak, MI for anyone curious). It was the first stop because it was the closest and I loved the name. And holy shit, y'all. The staff was awesome. The selection was awesome. The prices were definitely reasonable. They had some amazing kits, including a shawl kit I'm going to get once I have a little more disposable income and a little less yarn.

I spent more than I was planning to. And yes, I know I said I was gonna work through my stash before I got more yarn but this was a special exception because I can't just go there whenever I want. I also didn't get that much--only 5 skeins. And they had some books and patterns on sale so I got some of those, too.

One of the skeins and patterns was a beanie for my sister (she picked out both); that is already done and just needs to be blocked which I'm planning on doing this weekend. That yarn was a superwash Uruguayan merino in fall colors (Laneras brand). Then I got a couple of absolutely gorgeous, and so soft, skeins of dream in color's Smooshy Cashmere, one of which is definitely gonna be a pair of socks. The other may be as well, but I'm still debating.

The last two skeins don't have a project yet; they're Blue Sky Fiber Metallico, and are a mix of baby alpaca and silk. And OMG that yarn may be the softest thing I've ever touched. I'll probably need to order a couple more (Ewe-nique Knits has a website. I'm thrilled. My bank account is not.) to really make anything substantial with it, but that yarn is waiting for the perfect pattern.

I'm working on the socks right now between calls as my department waits for the chaos to descend. We've got probably an hour before that happens so I'm trying to relax myself as much as possible and hopefully I'll be able keep knitting through it. That may be the only way to save my sanity...

Plus (stating the obvious here, esp after the release of episode 4), trying to reduce your sentence to leave quickly makes you a prime target for spiraling into the cycle of disregarding your health and overworking yourself - which in turn makes you more likely to get sick and will shorten your life expectancy. (I doubt they could even provide medical care for humans, but that's an aside.)

Seeing as the whole reducing your sentence thing is nothing but word of mouth essentially (otherwise someone would have mentioned an ex-employee leaving maybe? Hmm yeah, no one has mentioned anything of the sort so far, most likely because those ex-employees get added to the pile of skeletons in storage.), all you're doing is burning yourself out and ruining your health for... What exactly? The company's profit of course :)

Your employees are running on hope, empty promises and ✨E G G✨ and that's about it.

Though one thing that is really interesting to me is the whole sentence thing.

Several things about that, actually:

First off, the length. Immy's sentence is over 400 years. Questions aside as to what she did or didn't do, does this vaguely match everyone else's time? Judging by Kip and Vee's reactions, probably not. Not to mention that humans don't live that long and I severely doubt they live that long in space either, unless time is calculated very differently than on earth and humans age slower but that would make the sentence length kind of superfluous, no?

Secondly, it's quite obvious the whole "ooooh you better be scared of your coworkers they're scary scary criminals" was nothing but hot air as well. Let's be real, no company can afford to hire the criminals that are as bad DeeDee makes them out to be. Those types wouldn't make the company any profit, they'd destroy stock and threaten customers, maybe even put a couple of them six feet under. I assume very few of those would even feel incentivised to work at all.

What's more likely is that they grab the outliers. Someone who tried shoplifting because their family is out of money and was caught. Someone who accidentally kicked their ball over the wrong fence. Someone who drove in the wrong lane without realizing. No one seems all that malicious and scheming, if anything they're misunderstood. That's probably what it all boils down to. A misunderstanding. While we don't know what Immy has done, I assume it was exactly that and it escalated pretty quickly lol Or the comparison I immediately had to think of was

"your Sim gets abducted by aliens because they got close to an alien in human disguise without realizing and now they're stuck in a flying saucer" (apparently socializing with an alien Sim makes a Sim more likely to be abducted in the Sims 4. I don't play the Sims, I just currently watch a lot of videos on it for reasons only known to my ADHD)

It was most likely a scenario of her accidentally violating stupid rules without being made aware of them first. Classic scenario of 'Keeping ferrets in a bathtub ✨in space���', I guess

So I was rewatching the Deep Space Discounts pilot again (it's really good and I would recommend it), and I might expand on this thought later.

But I just got hit by two horrifying possibilities with the sentence reductions.

First is the heartbreakingly horrific one which is we only have their word they can do that. What if they're lying and the duration of the sentence is unchanged? And like someone trusts the cuff when it says they've finished their sentence time and then are rearrested for attempting to escape because they still have time left

And second. If they have the ability to reduce the sentence for completion of tasks, then do they have the ability to extend it for, say, failing to meet KPIs? Is getting put on a PIP a literal death sentence?

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? Oral tradition of storytelling predates written ones by millennias, and honestly, which one you like is just a personal preference.

The actual difference is

when listening, you have no idea how to write characters’ names

when reading, you have no idea how to pronounce characters’ names
