Well, of course! Hahaha, I’ve always been total shipper trash in any fandom. Yes, yes, of course I ship.

When I was a teenager, I used to read a lot of Dramione. These days, I’m not really into that dynamic because it feels super toxic to me, BUT I do enjoy it when the story explores them as adults, even with their canon kids, and they meet again years later in a setting where they’ve both matured. I also like Hermione/Viktor Krum because it’s super cute, honestly. I’m not going to lie.

I’m old-school FF.net, so I’ve always had a soft spot for Luna/Theodore Nott, which became really popular in the late 2000s. And sticking with crack!ships, one of my current favorites is Neville/Pansy. It might seem weird, but OMG, THE DYNAMIC. Soft boy/BAMF girl—my cardio. Oh, and Cho/Dudley, because it’s absurd as hell, but canonically Cho married a Muggle, and what better irony for the Dursleys than ending up with a magical grandchild? Lol.

If we’re talking canon ships, I ship Dumbledore/Grindelwald so much because, while I have a lot of issues with Dumbledore, old-man yaoi gets me every time. Add the drama, and they have everything needed for a tragic gay Greek tragedy, and I live for the angst. Please, give me all the pain. I also love Lucius/Narcissa because I hate the theory that Lucius was abusive or that they didn’t love each other. They absolutely loved each other deeply, and as someone who was a teenager during the Gossip Girl boom, I have a soft spot for sassy old money couples who are awful people but are madly in love with each other.

When it comes to Severus, the most popular ships are usually with Hermione or Harry, and honestly, I find those really problematic because: 1) They’re his students (and I don’t like teacher/student dynamics at all; the power imbalance makes me so uncomfortable), and 2) He literally saw them grow up. He met them when they were 11, literal children. I don’t mind age gaps if both characters meet as adults (and by adults, I don’t mean 18—I mean 20+), but if one of them was a child when they first met, that’s a huge trigger for me. Then there’s Snily, which I only like in a platonic sense. I don’t think Severus and Lily would have ever worked as a couple. Like, ever.

And then there’s shipping him with any of the Marauders, which is a huge no for me because they literally sexually assaulted him. Honestly, the least problematic one is Snupin, but even then, I don’t like shipping Lupin with anyone (not even Tonks, lol) because I think he’s trash, and honestly, anyone deserves better than Lupin as a partner, lmao.

Nah, I don’t ship Severus with any canon characters. I much prefer OCs or Reader inserts.

Featuring shipping whinging, fatphobic fatphobia, and…old-fashioned conservative pearl clutching? Oh, heavy burden. Spoilers, of course

“Glaring Societal Issues”

The “Muggle farmer” in the GOF is actually the camp director, Mr. Roberts, who had been growing suspicious at the number of people (wizards booking tents for the Quidditch World Cup) who are booking tents. The wizards need to keep their existence a secret (that’s, like, the number 1 rule of being a wizard) so they modify his memory. The Obliviator who does this says he needs to do it “ten times a day,” not every few minutes, and carps about wizards (Ludo Bagman in particular) not shutting up about wizard things that draws suspicion.

Wizards in HP can be indeed callous, indifferent, patronizing, and even cruel in their attitudes towards Muggles, but this example really isn’t it. It’s already established that wizards have to use Memory Charms and damage control in order to hide their world from the Muggles. It’s standard protocol.

Yes, because the people in HP that want to change things and make things better for Muggleborns are portrayed as the bad guys and the ones that want the wizarding world to be for wizards only are portrayed as the good guys. Oh, wait.

“Not A Glaring Societal Issue”

Harry and Ginny becoming a couple was foreshadowed as early as the first book, OP, and there were many, many essays back in the day on why they were endgame because of these subtle hints. Ginny had a huge crush with Harry, but I don’t think it reached the level of God worship even in her younger years. Even then she tended to understand Harry’s true nature (his modesty, his aversion to nagging, and resistance to authority) way better than even Hermione.

I agree that Rowling could have set up Hinny better by exploiting Harry and Ginny’s connection of both being victims of Voldemort, perhaps had Ginny aid somehow in the Horcrux mystery (Memory!Riddle canonically “poured some of his secrets into her” so why not?). But of course she was always meant to be Harry’s safe haven, so to speak, untouched by the long shadow of Voldemort. Rowling was also playing the “who will Harry end up with???” shipping game with the fans as the series went on so it behooved her to keep is a tightly wrapped mystery until the last possible moment. Not a good choice in the long-term, frankly, but then HP never really revolved on romance.

As for Harry/Luna, you’re not the only one, OP. My dad shipped them from the movies (Radcliffe and Lynch did look good together)…until he read OotP and found a much quirkier Book Luna than Movie Luna. Nothing wrong with Harry/Luna, but I’m personally fine with Harry/Ginny.

Yes, these never-ending accusations of fatphobia are exhausting. It’s an old one, which Rowling has flatly denied before and fans themselves have argued for and against, over and over.

Suffice to say, both fat and skinny characters are portrayed negatively and positively throughout the the books and their size has nothing to do with their personalities. While Vernon may be fat, he isn’t really described as ugly (he has ugly expressions when he loses it, though). Dudley actually lost weight due to his diet and boxing, but he was still nasty to Harry up until Dementor attack. Neville stopped being comic relief past Book 4/5 and in 7 became a straight-up BAMF (and still chubby!). Hagrid is more than fat—he is literally half giant, so of course he is clumsy and doesn’t fit in much anywhere (he has accommodations). While he has some comic moments, he can’t really be said to be a comic relief character as a whole. Molly Weasley is also described as “plump” (I think Charlie is also described as stocky) and she is one of the most idealized characters in HP. Slughorn was never portrayed a bad guy, just a flawed one, and Fudge’s weight is barely mentioned. Among the truly skinny characters, there is Petunia, Snape, and, er, Voldemort.

If anything, the series is skeptical of (extraordinary) physical beauty and charm in general, sometimes to a fault. Fleur, Sirius, and Cedric aside, there is also Gilderoy Lockhart, Bellatrix Lestrange. And then there is perhaps the hottest, most seductive character of all HP—Tom Riddle, a young Voldemort. HP definitely leans towards the “looks can be deceiving/don’t trust appearances” category in terms of theme.

As for this supposed negative framing revealing Rowling’s supposed IRL fatphobia, years ago she shared a telling anecdote about an old friend she met, who had this to say about her appearance:

I went to the British Book Awards that evening. After the award ceremony I bumped into a woman I hadn't seen for nearly three years. The first thing she said to me? ‘You've lost a lot of weight since the last time I saw you!’

‘Well,’ I said, slightly nonplussed. ‘Last time you saw me I’d just had a baby.’

What I felt like saying was, ‘I've produced my third child and my sixth novel since I last saw you. Aren't either of those things more important, more interesting, than my size?’ But no—my waist looked smaller! Forget the kid and the book: finally, something to celebrate!

And of course this now-famous quote:

You keep saying the phrase “good guys.” I don’t think you know what it means.

So it’s pretty obvious that the injustices and corruption of the wizarding world are deliberately meant to reflect the injustices and corruption of the real world, particularly Britain. But since Rowling is evil now, all depictions of government corruption and the prison-industrial complex are now meant to be endorsements, approved by Rowling herself! After all, it isn’t as if Rowling didn’t confirm that the new generation did make radical changes to the Ministry of Magic (the Auror Department in particular) or the world in general. Perhaps she should have gone more into detail as to the nature of these changes, but that would require another HP book. Honestly, that’s really up to the fanfic writers.

because i’m waiting on the water for my pasta to boil, here’s an idea i had for a fic but haven’t worked on it hardly any not for lack of muse. the muse is there. the worldbuilding has been done to death. i just haven’t the time to add it to the mountain of WIPs I’ve already got going.

This is gonna be broken up into parts so i’m gonna do a different part per reblog till i’m done.

PART 1:  THE PATRONAGE OF A TITAN

When Lily was a young witch - around 13 or so - her best friend Severus introduced her to some old pureblood traditions (which he and his mother did but hid from his father). She was shown how to worship the old pagan gods. To a muggleborn this was at first not well received, but as Lily had learned in the previous three years not everything about her new world was to be taken at face value. So she endeavoured to learn and not be prejudiced. She had lerned that each witch or wizard who practced the old ways had a patron god or goddess to which they prayed. This was, to her, not entirely unlike the idea of patron saints to whom muggles appealed for strength, guidance, or support. And so this is how she approached this new aspect of her magical identity. Even after her parting of the ways with Severus, she continued to learn and had even begun the practice of honoring the old gods - though she had no patron as yet.

On her seventeenth birthday she had ventured into the forbidden forest, feeling an inexplicable pull on her magic. She found herself in a clearing where there was a pond and a small smattering of trees. Despite it being the dead of winter, the clearing was warm and inviting. There was a fire lit, and an old woman sitting before it. She was naked from the waist up, and her skin sagged and her long hair was thin and silver with age.

"Miss Evans, I've been waiting for you."

"Wh- How do you know my name? Who are you?"

"I was once called the Meter Theon. But in Sparta they called me Meter Megale. My brother-husband called me Rhea."

"You're a titan."

"Yes child."

"I thought you'd be bigger."

Rhea laughs at this and invites Lily to join her by the fire. Lily learns from her that Rhea has come forward as her patron, and tells hr that the old ways are dying. The bond to her husband only partially fulfilled. Hades was punished by watching Persephone forced to marry Hermes. But rather than marry the brute she attacked him and took up his dagger, plunging it into her own heart.... For the weapons forged in the fires of Hephaestus were so powerful they could kill even a Titan. Denied the pleasure of watching Hades suffer as his wife was married to the suitor Zeus had chosen, Zeus forbade her soul from ever entering the realm of Hades and bound her soul to mortal bones to be reborn again and again. My beloved son still stands watch, though he grows weaker by the year, in the hopes that now his brothers are long since gone, her soul may be able to pass through his gates and she is returned to him."

Lily is given the choice near dawn to accept Rhea, one of the last of the old gods, as her patron goddess or to refuse and seek out another. Lily accepts Rhea, which causes the old woman to smile and gives her an amulet with strange runes upon it.

Lily wakes in her own bed in Gryffindor tower, finding a delicate locket around her neck. Upon closer inspection, the inside has an inscription - the same strange runes from the amulet Rhea had given to her in what she assumed was a dream... Only to realize when she pulls her covers aside that her feet are smudged in dirt as if she'd been walking outside.

Lily learns as much as she can of Rhea in the following years. When she marries James Potter, she insists that they buy a specific type of wine without telling him why. He believes it is her favorite because she tends to keep a bottle in the house "for special occasions". She plants a garden where every plant links back to her patron Titaness in some way or manner. The night of Halloween, after James has gone to sleep rather satisfied after their own "after party" once they'd come home from Sirius's wild Halloween party, Lily went out into her garden in the wee hours and made her offering to Rhea who, once again, appeared to her. This time Rhea was much more ancient in her appearance, much more haggard. But she was still very pleased to see Lily had done as she had promised and continued to worship her. "You are the last of my acolytes, I am afraid. And when you one day pass, so too shall I." Lily professes that won't be the case. That one day she and James will start a family, and she will make sure that her children honor Rhea just as Lily has done - even if they have to do it behind her husband's back (to many Light families, the "old ways" are seen as dark and are thus shunned and forbidden. Otherwise she would have happily included James in her worship of Rhea.) This amuses the Titaness, but she says that no, it is her time. The age of the gods has finally come to an end. But with the passage of the gods, something new must fill the void. Something new must give mankind the comfort and protection once offered by the old gods. "I have a gift for you, my dear child. As my last priestess, I wish to give you something your husband... unfortunately cannot." "What?" "Try as you might, your husband's seed will never swell your belly. But as my last act in this existence, I grant you a boon. Your loyalty and your love have kept me alive longer than my brothers and sisters. Your love has given me more time with my beloved son Hades, and as a mother who has seen all her other children perish before her, this is a gift that can only be matched by one of equal value." Rhea touches Lily's abdomen and Lily feels a warmth flood her starting from there. Rhea visibly weakens as she is doing this, and the brightness in her eyes fades from brilliant emerald to a dull moss. "What have you done to me?" "My body fails me, but my power will remain so long as you live. I have given you the only thing of value to me left. Treat him kindly, my priestess. He has known so much sorrow and so much pain and yet he remains so pure and full of love." Lily, in disbelief, puts a hand to her adbomen. "How... what...." "Word of advice from one mother to another. If your husband tries to eat him, just paint a face on a rock  and shove it down his throat. My only regret was letting Cronus eat Hades instead of Zeus. If i knew then that boy would be such a hatefull jackass like his father, I'd have thrown him into the abyss myself and been done with him. Hera, too. And Poseidon was on pretty thin fucking ice there by the end."

Lily wakes the next morning in her bed with James, and once more her feet are smudged with dirt. This isn't the first time, so she tells James that she woke in the night for some water and wanted to take a stroll in the garden to look at some of her night blooms. The moment she is alone, she casts a charm and finds that she is, indeed, pregnant. After James has gone to work for the day, Lily prepares a special offering and leaves it in the garden tucked in a little altar disguised as a muggle garden decoration. She thanks Rhea for her gift and promises to show him all of the love and affection she possibly can - for both his mothers.

Lily does not see Rhea again, but she can feel her patron's presence from time to time and finds it comforting.

When Harry Potter is born, Lily silently praises Rhea, thanking her again for her gift and for her patronage and protection, and promises to do the best she can to raise the reborn Hades in a way she would hopefully approve.

They go into hiding, and Lily invokes Rhea's power and protection - not for herself, but for the son the Titaness had given her.

The entire day of October 31, 1981 Lily Potter feels powerful. She feels the energies surrounding her and her family intensify and a feeling of dread settles into her gut. She is reminded of the last time she and Rhea spoke face to face. The titaness had said that her body was failing her, and that so long as Lily lived, so too would the power of Rhea. During the day when she set Harry down for a nap, she prayed fervently over the boy, chanting ancient prayers of protection she had learned over the years. James comes upon her, but does not interrupt and instead waits outside Harry's nursery and listens to his wife's chanting. He slips away when she finishes and hurries downstairs. When they are both in the kitchen later, standing side by side at the counter as Lily prepares Harry's after nap snack and James is fixing himself some tea he quietly says, "I know Harry isn't mine." "What? Where the hell is this coming from? I did not cheat on you if that's what you think." "You got pregnant pretty quickly after Sirus's costume party-" "I did not cheat on you." "then who's the father?" "YOU are you dolt! I... Harry was a blessing! A gift to us for my unfaltering devotion o a dying goddess!" "you're mad." "Call me what you want, James. But I tell you if you were to pull an inheritence test on him right now you'll see he's your son. The night Harry was conceived we had just made love and she came to me and blessed me with our son. Go upstairs and look at him, James. He looks just like you, but with his mother's eyes. That's no glamour. That's no illusion or spell or-" "I know it's dark. I know it's illegal. The the argue a bit more and Lily storms out of the kitchen. After Harry wakes up, James realizes he's been an idiot after watching Lily playing with Harry and goes to apologize. Lily's annoyed with him, but forgives him with a "Besides, you know the wards on this place would have kicked him right out if he wasn't really a Potter you dunderhead."

That night Voldemort attacks, just as in canon. Lily is wearing her special locket that was given to her from Rhea when she accepted the Titaness as her patron. When Lily died, the remnants of Rhea's power was called forth and protected Harry in response to the muggleborn priestess's willing self sacrifice. But it was not enough to stop the horcrux that was drawn to the reincarnation of the god of the dead.

potter children headcanons

here’s some personal headcanons about james sirius, albus severus and lily luna i wrote after some next gen talk in the wolfstar server! 

james sirius: my JS is more alike my james the first than i might want to admit, but hopefully not in a cliche way. i just think of both of them as “sunny”, warm people: they’re extroverts, yes, but not just loud and brash. i see JS as someone who truly cares about his loved ones and will go through great lengths to make them feel it. he might not be the best at talking about his own feelings, though, especially when it comes to negative ones. i think he deals with harry’s legacy by brushing off the shitty things the press says about him, or even stepping in front of his siblings and making faces to the cameras so lily and especially albus will be spared. that might give him a reputation of being shallow and an attention seeker, especially because he might not do too well academically. i do think he’s smart, though. i like the idea of him memorising things easily, but only actually studying for subjects he likes. he doesn’t mind getting average grades on stuff he doesn’t care for. so yes, the press calls him pretty but dumb, and even though he’s very good at pretending it doesn’t affect him, he’s still worried his parents might be disappointed. i think he is the closest to ginny, out of the three siblings. i like the idea of him playing quidditch. they have the same “fierce” energy, too. if he ever plays professionally, i see his biggest insecurity being disappointing his mum. he thinks the world of her, and it only grows stronger as he matures and learns more about her as a person. his relationship with harry is good, too, because he’s never been a difficult kid (not in an emotional way, at least), and they communicate fairly well. harry is not the best at picking up when james is not at his best at first; maybe he’d get “moody” sometimes as a kid and harry had a hard time figuring out what to do since james wasn’t usually like that. as he grows, i can see him being close to his dad, especially once he realises his parents will love him no matter what. also: stubborn, prankster, good at charms and flying. not good at losing or dealing with rejection and definitely bottles up feelings he doesn’t know how to go about. (gryffindor for sure! second house is hufflepuff)

albus severus: that shy kid who almost only wants his mum for the first year or two. it breaks harry’s heart because james made a connection with him almost instantly and al would cry when his dad picked him up. i can see harry being very persistent about it, though. he would have asked molly for help, asked hermione to find books and even talking to a muggle paediatrician. eventually, al would learn to trust him too. i think in many ways he’s the opposite to james and that’s complicated sometimes. james would have tried to pull him out of his shell and he would get defensive. that could apply for when they were very young, but also later on, in school. i can see it reaching a point where james would try to get him to go out and see people/make friends and he would get offended, thinking that james was embarrassed that his brother was not as cool/popular as him. maybe they drift apart in their early years in hogwarts. he’s the one who deals the worst with the comparisons to harry. they’re the most alike physically (that’s one CC head canon i like!), and while james would laugh off the stuff people said about him and his dad, albus would always feel like not being like harry meant not being good enough. it takes him a while to understand that it doesn’t matter if he does exactly what harry would, that his father will still love him. i also think that the fact that he’s more of a sensitive type of person makes it difficult to connect to ginny in some levels, when they’re older. they love each other a lot and i can see ginny defending al like a badass lioness with her cub, but then when he grows up they have less in common and that’s okay. he might be close to uncle ron and auntie hermione. maybe ron teaches him how to play chess and he’s really good at it. he and aunt hermione share a passion for books and social justice. so: sensitive (which sometimes becomes a weakness), book-smart and competitive. likes to get good grades and to be praised by professors. might have a hidden talent like painting or drawing. (slytherin! ravenclaw as a second house, maybe. but i think he’s very much of a slyth. likes books, yes, but he wouldn’t be the best at solving ravenclaw tower’s puzzles)

lily luna: the closest to harry! i don’t like the phrase “daddy’s girl”, but maybe it’s something like that. i don’t think harry and ginny were expecting a third kid so close to their second, but i think harry was over the freakin’ moon to be having a girl. also while the boys had to deal with the comparisons to their dad, lily had to deal with being ginny’s daughter and lily the first’s granddaughter. i like the idea of desi potters, so she might not look that much like her paternal grandmother, but people mentioned her a lot when LL was growing up. in terms of personality, i see her being closer to albus than to james. her being different than ginny is a headcanon i like not only because it breaks an expectation, but because mother/daughter relationships are already hard, and since she’s growing up surrounded by the press, there is always be a shitty journalist ready to pick on her clothes, or her appearance, or to dig up pictures of her mum at her age to point out how much better ginny looked. i think even their body type is different, and that it matters a lot. lily doesn’t feel good enough because her mum is this amazing woman and she doesn’t trust her dad to “give it to her straight” because he will always tell her she’s the prettiest girl in the room. so her and ginny take a long time to figure out where they stand. lily gets a little lost in the boys’ dynamics, but both of them love her and take care of her in their own way. she’s not as averse to people as al, so she played with james when they were younger and then went out to parties with him when they were older. she also enjoyed quiet time with al, and talking about everything and nothing with him. it’s al she tells most of her secrets, not james, and james is jealous of it sometimes. even though it takes her some time, i think she does grow up to be just as much as a BAMF as ginny, but in her own way. she’s good at potions and transfiguration and has this kind of systematic/big picture intelligence that is pretty rare. (i LOVE slytherin lily luna, but i can also see her as a gryffindor. i think she’s ambitious when it comes to proving herself and showing what she’s made of, and that can go either way)

“Stop dallying about, Potter,” an amused voice calls out from within. “Either come inside or bugger off, but don’t just keep standing there like some kind of peeping Tom.”

Harry suddenly feels himself blush. “Er, right— Er, okay,” he stammers.

Draco looks up from his reading material and smirks at Harry, who’s now standing a few steps away. “It’s some Muggle history book Granger lent me,” he offers for no apparent reason. “Not the most riveting piece of non-fiction I’ve ever come across, but it helps pass the time.”

“Ah.” Harry shuffles his feet nervously. “Er, how did you know it was me just now?”

“Well, I could distinguish your profile quite clearly with your hair sticking up at odd angles, those daft glasses, not to mention that clumsy way you’re always pussyfooting about, even now.”

“Ah.” Harry grins sheepishly. “Er, right.”

“So, what exactly brings you here, Potter?”

“Well,um…”

Draco puts his book down and moves to sit in a cross-legged position. “Yes?”

Harry takes a deep breath, opens his mouth and starts talking, and once begun, he soon finds he can no longer stop. A flood of words spills forward, and not before long, bitter, desperate tears follow. And Harry would be embarrassed, thoroughly ashamed of himself, if it weren’t for the fact that he’s already too far-gone to care. He has lost the strength and the will to fight too, especially against himself.

He wipes his eyes with the back of his sleeve and then unexpectedly, he feels slender arms snake themselves around him and hold him tight. Malfoy's—no, Draco’s arms, and Harry supposes that this shouldn’t feel right or comfortable but it does…

Merlin, how it does…

Harry takes a small step backwards and looks at him, utterly bewildered. “I-I,” he begins. “You er—”

“What, Potter?”

Harry takes a deep breath and gazes into grey eyes that he’s scared to meet sometimes because they give him this strange, fluttering feeling in his stomach and he’s beginning to understand why. He used to feel this way around Ginny too, but he doesn’t any longer. He hasn’t for a long time, and now more than ever, he’s confident that breaking up with her was the right thing to do.

“Po—Harry?” Draco whispers, his breath ghosting over Harry’s lips. So close, Harry thinks, and yet nowhere near close enough.

“What is it?” Draco asks again, his tone still gentle but also a little more urgent this time. “What else is wrong?”

Harry notices that the boy looks genuinely concerned, but also nervous, though not scared, exactly, more like… he’s anticipating something.

“I—” Harry begins, but he can’t finish for he hasn’t the right words. Instead, he leans closer, and impulsively, he kisses Draco in a way that’s a little clumsy but mostly determined.

For a moment, Draco seems to freeze and Harry’s scared, terrified, but then the boy responds, timidly at first, as if he’s testing the waters, making sure that this isn’t some kind of joke to humiliate him because his pride is one of the few things he hasn’t yet forfeited.

Harry’s hands move up into Draco’s soft hair and the kiss deepens.

Harry doesn’t know for how long they stay there, or even when or how they make it to the bed.

They share plenty of lingering kisses and gentle caresses that night, but nothing more. They’re both too shy and inexperienced to take things further, and when fatigue finally overcomes them, they fall asleep in each other’s arms.

The following morning, they don’t talk about what happened. They hug briefly before they leave the tent (Harry exiting ten minutes after Draco does) and then they just go about their business as usual.

Throughout the day, though he’d never admit as much, Draco is worried, to the point of scared even, that Harry will want to pretend that nothing ever happened, or that he’ll chalk it up to stress, the war, loneliness or any other plausible excuse that might spring to mind.

Draco finally stops worrying a few minutes after midnight, when Harry returns.

He lets out a relieved breath when he spots the familiar silhouette on the other side of the canvas. He gets up and walks over to the flap. He holds out his hand and says with a shy smile, “Harry?”

The boy gives him a small smile and a nod in return. “Hello, Draco.”

Not many words are spoken on the second night, nor are there on the third, when ardent passion pushes aside all hesitation, nervousness and fear.

They lie together naked for the first time. With hands and mouths, they discover each other’s bodies and with careful, clumsy strokes, they bring one another to completion.

Afterwards, Harry settles down in Draco’s arms again and realises he has never before felt so at peace with himself or as cherished by anyone.

Neville Longbottom?

First impression - Very similar to Luna, I thought “wow this kid is such a sad loser.” Being a sad loser myself, I felt immediate pity, but also this sense of like superiority at 11 like “well at least I wouldn’t be dumb enough to lose a toad. Or bring a toad. Idiot.”

Impression now - Man, kids are so hard on other kids. Now I’m like yeah that’s right you’re a bamf and you always had it in you but everyone picked on you and bullied you and ignored you, even Harry (especially Harry - I mean, Neville is obviously the odd man out in two duos of best friends in a dormitory and no one wonders why he lives with his Gran or cares what he does other than to get annoyed that he snores and is hopeless at everything). 

Favorite moment - When Harry gave Neville his last chocolate frog and looked him squarely in the eye and told him “You’re worth 12 of Malfoy.” Neville knows he’s ridiculed. Knows he’s last for the quidditch picks. Knows he’s just the worst lab partner. And for Harry to tell him he’s worth twelve of a popular, intelligent, good-looking, thin, rich kid. Wow. That’s such a boost for any kid, but especially a fat kid. 

Idea for a story - The moment when Sprout becomes Headmistress after McGonagall retires, and this very touching scene where McGonagall hands over being Head of Gryffindor to Neville Longbottom, a boy she had always been exasperated with, but now is fiercely proud of. “Are you sure I’m the right person, Professor?” asked Neville anxiously. Professor McGonagall smiled. “I’ve never been more sure of anything.” “But...what about Harry?” And she just gives him such an odd, such a strange look, and then smiles. “And what about him?”

Unpopular opinion - I think Neville was braver in the Department of Mysteries than he was in Battle of Hogwarts. He faced Bellatrix, who taunted him, he bloodied his nose and still was fighting. He knew 10/10 he would die in a confrontation with her but by god he was going to go down swinging, and snapping his dad’s wand when it was the last thing he had left of him just to protect Harry? Iconic. 

Favorite relationship - Ginny + Neville friendship. Ginny said yes when Neville asked her to the Yule Ball. Harry and Ron had JUST been mocking Neville as a worse date than ugly acne scarred Eloise Midgen and Ginny fires up DON’T LAUGH. And they’re just...shocked. Because Neville had been the butt of EVERY joke and like...every lapse of conversation was probably filled with ‘you know what Neville did in Defense....’

Favorite headcanon - When Neville and Hermione went back for 8th year, Hannah was one of the 8th years too. With only 12 ‘8th years’ they all shared staff quarters as a unified dormitory instead of being subjected to the torment of old dormitories, and Hannah and Neville started studying together.

Oh, pal, boy do I! I have a short list of long recs here. I’m going to try to make this list more concise than my last, but with more recs. Here’s my effort. These aren’t in any particular order.

Chaos Theory by Brief_and_Dreamy ( 43k )

Summary:  When an ancient spell book is discovered in an abandoned vault, Harry–a Curse-Breaker–and Draco–an Unspeakable–are called in to examine it. Draco does everything in his power to resist Potter’s advances, despite his growing crush. Potter just wants sex, he assumes, and Draco doesn’t want to be used. He discovers, however, that some things simply aren’t within our power to control.

It’s been a while since I read this and I know definitely that it’s been seventy-four fics in the time since this one so my memory might be a little spotty. What I do remember, however, is so much tension (it’s almost palpable — you could probably hold it and cradle it in your hand) and snark and hermione being a bamf. Draco/Ron friendship. Also I’m pretty sure Harry smokes weed in this one. “For pain.” Warning: if you do not have an ao3 account, you may not be able to view it.

Better than an Origami Bird by chibaken and jadepreseley (3k)

Summary: A series of letters in which Harry and Draco argue, play truth or dare, get kinky, and are a couple of very naughty (or very good, depending on who you ask) boys during class.

I enjoyed every single word of this alright? The writers have such a great grip on the characters and write them so believably. I appreciate the hell out of the format which reminded me a bit of chat rp. I loved it. 

Can You Feel the Silence by toasterpapa (12k)

Summary:  “He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words.”——————————————————————————————————He wasn’t mute. He could speak perfectly fine, thank you very much, he just decided to only speak when absolutely necessary. Why waste his breath if it wasn’t worth it? If these people didn’t want to listen to his words, he wouldn’t give any to them. It was just better that way. It was easier. It was peaceful.

Let me be the first to say that I did Not Cry. Not at All. This story is filled with the BEST quotes. Either they’re relatable or deep or funny or just pretty. I applaud the writer. Writing a silent character is extremely difficult and some writers can’t do it well. It takes from the character and prevents people from connecting, but THIS PERSON HERE did it splendidly. ( and can i can a hallelujah for draco slowly opening up and being comfortable around harry because i am HERE for it )

Bound to You by agentmoppet (28k)

Summary:  Hag magic is capricious and unruly, and Harry and Draco are bound to stay by each other’s side until they can solve the riddle. In between long car trips, misty rain, and midnight star charts, they begin to understand each other.

This is a story that sat around in my library for a while before I thought fuck it i’m gonna read it today and then I was upset that I’d waited so long because it’s AMAZING !!! There’s a mystery and falling in love and secret beaches and adorable tots. This fic right here is golden. And it has a background/past ship that I’ve always imagined but didn’t think anyone else did and I took solace in the fact that it’s included in this and I am validated. Warning, it’s painful. 

Welcome to the Broom Closet by incapricious (23k)

Summary:  Harry thinks he knows how his life will go: Become an Auror. Marry Ginny. Have a family. But then he sees an advertisement in the paper that no one else can see, and his life is turned upside-down. The Broom Closet: you can be anyone you want while you’re there, but you won’t remember it in the morning.

As stated in my previous list, identity porn is my shit. I love secret identities. I find that they’re amazing. And the reveal is even more amazing. Not to mention in this fic, Harry and Draco essentially fall in love again every night. Man. Wow. Holy. It’s a rollercoaster let me tell you. First oblivious!harry. Then snarky!draco. then anonymous hookups ( with feelings ). Then a surprisingly sad story of a ghost who I didn’t expect to love as much as I did. 

Packing the Flat by marguerite_26 (6k)

Summary:  Months after their explosive break-up, Draco insists Harry return to their flat to remove his belongings.

Hoooo boy- this. This. This. This. I needed some happy ending angst and BOOM this fic appeared. It’s everything. It’s short, emotional and honestly Draco is an idiot I want to fight him, but I have a rule against fighting adorable people so. This has such a satisfying ending, though. Despite the ride it took my emotions on, I was very happy with it. I had this kinda fuck wait awww FU-AWWWWWW  feeling at the ending paragraphs and I loved every moment of it.

Party of Two by fireflavored (13k)

Summary:  Drinking, sex, and a total misreading of the concept of fuck buddies.

This was really cute. It was so cute. I don’t think I stopped smiling or laughing while reading this because these dorks honestly. They’re so cute and clueless. There’s so much to love in this fic. Oblivious!drarry, pining, friends to lovers, aurors, a fuck you to the daily prophet. man it’s so much. I appreciate this fic so much.

Strangers in a Dark Room by shiftylinguini (3k)

Summary: Harry clenches his jaw, sets the files down on the desk between them. “Remind me what you were picked up for again?” he asks pointedly, hands resting over the smooth paper.

“Oh,” Draco shakes his head dismissively, “who can remember. Loitering, was it?”

I have died everyday waiting for this fic. I didn’t know I needed this in my life until after I read it. I’ve read it maybe four times and I still love it so much. I usually don’t go for established relationship because I like to see it develop, but this right here. Oh lord. I love their dynamic and the little blurbs where they break character are so adorable. Draco is such a little shit and Harry loves him for and Draco loves him for loving him for it. This fic is a Yes.

Paradigm by dysonrules (57k)

Summary:  Harry Potter is an Auror and Draco Malfoy is a rentboy, but this is not a typical rentboy story.

I read this maybe six or seven months ago, and I still think about it. Draco is a genius and he’s the most slytherin slytherin there is. You gotta feel bad for Harry though. But you also don’t, because everyone’s having fun. Except maybe … nevermind. Spoilers. But listen, there’s deception and secrets and auror!harry. Draco’s just trying to rebuild his life after the war, okay? The wizengamot were dicks here. I mean, more than usual.
