Oh, pal, boy do I! I have a short list of long recs here. I’m going to try to make this list more concise than my last, but with more recs. Here’s my effort. These aren’t in any particular order.

Chaos Theory by Brief_and_Dreamy ( 43k )

Summary:  When an ancient spell book is discovered in an abandoned vault, Harry–a Curse-Breaker–and Draco–an Unspeakable–are called in to examine it. Draco does everything in his power to resist Potter’s advances, despite his growing crush. Potter just wants sex, he assumes, and Draco doesn’t want to be used. He discovers, however, that some things simply aren’t within our power to control.

It’s been a while since I read this and I know definitely that it’s been seventy-four fics in the time since this one so my memory might be a little spotty. What I do remember, however, is so much tension (it’s almost palpable — you could probably hold it and cradle it in your hand) and snark and hermione being a bamf. Draco/Ron friendship. Also I’m pretty sure Harry smokes weed in this one. “For pain.” Warning: if you do not have an ao3 account, you may not be able to view it.

Better than an Origami Bird by chibaken and jadepreseley (3k)

Summary: A series of letters in which Harry and Draco argue, play truth or dare, get kinky, and are a couple of very naughty (or very good, depending on who you ask) boys during class.

I enjoyed every single word of this alright? The writers have such a great grip on the characters and write them so believably. I appreciate the hell out of the format which reminded me a bit of chat rp. I loved it. 

Can You Feel the Silence by toasterpapa (12k)

Summary:  “He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words.”——————————————————————————————————He wasn’t mute. He could speak perfectly fine, thank you very much, he just decided to only speak when absolutely necessary. Why waste his breath if it wasn’t worth it? If these people didn’t want to listen to his words, he wouldn’t give any to them. It was just better that way. It was easier. It was peaceful.

Let me be the first to say that I did Not Cry. Not at All. This story is filled with the BEST quotes. Either they’re relatable or deep or funny or just pretty. I applaud the writer. Writing a silent character is extremely difficult and some writers can’t do it well. It takes from the character and prevents people from connecting, but THIS PERSON HERE did it splendidly. ( and can i can a hallelujah for draco slowly opening up and being comfortable around harry because i am HERE for it )

Bound to You by agentmoppet (28k)

Summary:  Hag magic is capricious and unruly, and Harry and Draco are bound to stay by each other’s side until they can solve the riddle. In between long car trips, misty rain, and midnight star charts, they begin to understand each other.

This is a story that sat around in my library for a while before I thought fuck it i’m gonna read it today and then I was upset that I’d waited so long because it’s AMAZING !!! There’s a mystery and falling in love and secret beaches and adorable tots. This fic right here is golden. And it has a background/past ship that I’ve always imagined but didn’t think anyone else did and I took solace in the fact that it’s included in this and I am validated. Warning, it’s painful. 

Welcome to the Broom Closet by incapricious (23k)

Summary:  Harry thinks he knows how his life will go: Become an Auror. Marry Ginny. Have a family. But then he sees an advertisement in the paper that no one else can see, and his life is turned upside-down. The Broom Closet: you can be anyone you want while you’re there, but you won’t remember it in the morning.

As stated in my previous list, identity porn is my shit. I love secret identities. I find that they’re amazing. And the reveal is even more amazing. Not to mention in this fic, Harry and Draco essentially fall in love again every night. Man. Wow. Holy. It’s a rollercoaster let me tell you. First oblivious!harry. Then snarky!draco. then anonymous hookups ( with feelings ). Then a surprisingly sad story of a ghost who I didn’t expect to love as much as I did. 

Packing the Flat by marguerite_26 (6k)

Summary:  Months after their explosive break-up, Draco insists Harry return to their flat to remove his belongings.

Hoooo boy- this. This. This. This. I needed some happy ending angst and BOOM this fic appeared. It’s everything. It’s short, emotional and honestly Draco is an idiot I want to fight him, but I have a rule against fighting adorable people so. This has such a satisfying ending, though. Despite the ride it took my emotions on, I was very happy with it. I had this kinda fuck wait awww FU-AWWWWWW  feeling at the ending paragraphs and I loved every moment of it.

Party of Two by fireflavored (13k)

Summary:  Drinking, sex, and a total misreading of the concept of fuck buddies.

This was really cute. It was so cute. I don’t think I stopped smiling or laughing while reading this because these dorks honestly. They’re so cute and clueless. There’s so much to love in this fic. Oblivious!drarry, pining, friends to lovers, aurors, a fuck you to the daily prophet. man it’s so much. I appreciate this fic so much.

Strangers in a Dark Room by shiftylinguini (3k)

Summary: Harry clenches his jaw, sets the files down on the desk between them. “Remind me what you were picked up for again?” he asks pointedly, hands resting over the smooth paper.

“Oh,” Draco shakes his head dismissively, “who can remember. Loitering, was it?”

“Soliciting, Malfoy!”

I have died everyday waiting for this fic. I didn’t know I needed this in my life until after I read it. I’ve read it maybe four times and I still love it so much. I usually don’t go for established relationship because I like to see it develop, but this right here. Oh lord. I love their dynamic and the little blurbs where they break character are so adorable. Draco is such a little shit and Harry loves him for and Draco loves him for loving him for it. This fic is a Yes.

Paradigm by dysonrules (57k)

Summary:  Harry Potter is an Auror and Draco Malfoy is a rentboy, but this is not a typical rentboy story.

I read this maybe six or seven months ago, and I still think about it. Draco is a genius and he’s the most slytherin slytherin there is. You gotta feel bad for Harry though. But you also don’t, because everyone’s having fun. Except maybe … nevermind. Spoilers. But listen, there’s deception and secrets and auror!harry. Draco’s just trying to rebuild his life after the war, okay? The wizengamot were dicks here. I mean, more than usual.

Running on Air by eleventy7

Draco Malfoy has been missing for three years. Harry is assigned the cold case and finds himself slowly falling in love with the memories he collects.

This fic is so beautiful it will break your heart without you even knowing it and you will be left aching for days. It will forever be my favorite fic and it is the most beautiful fic I have ever read—it is the one that brought me into Drarry when I didn’t even ship them! The loneliness is so well captured, the scenes so beautifully described, and both the suspense and the emotional storylines are so well crafted. td;lr: please go read this stunningly beautiful fic I promise you won’t be disappointed

The Lip-Lock Jinx by cassisluna

It's a jinx that renders the victim mute, unless he/she serves the purpose of the jinx and kisses the person that they desire. It's just Harry's luck that he's in love with Draco. HPDM, one-shot, eighth year.

Already fussed over it once but here we are again! Eighth-year fic, Draco is quieter but still witty, Harry is clumsy in his affections, Ginny is brilliant. It’s so soft you will place your hand on your chest and sigh, you will smile helplessly because your heart is brimming with softness. A dose of this fic on a bad day and I promise you will feel just the bit better.

Stop All the Clocks (This Is the Last Time I’m Leaving Without You) by firethesound

Living with Draco was difficult; living without him is unbearable. But if there’s one thing Harry learned from the war, it’s that even when one life ends, the rest of the world goes right on living.

Warning: MCD, it is—oh dear it is the angstiest fic I have ever read. It tore my heart out of my chest and it is so, so good. The writing is beautiful, I love the way Draco and Harry’s relationship progressed, I adore their characterization, how they bicker and care. Harry’s road to recovery is rocky and winding but it is,, so genuine. (I also adore the structure of this fic lol, the two timelines are weaved together seamlessly and it just fascinated me!) This fic will leave the most beautiful scar in your heart but really, if you can afford it, it is so worth it.

Grounds for Divorce by tepre

Malfoy finds a coin. Harry finds a letter.

A story about histories, a story about families. A story about a lemon tree somewhere in Upper Egypt.

This is, like, the slowest slow burn of all slow burns. It’s a bond fic, as you will discover pretty soon into the story—but it proceeds so differently than I ever expected. It is messy, beautiful, winding, Harry and Draco proceed to take the same freakin path two thousand times without ever reaching the destination—but it’s all good, and you see the beauty in the messiness because that is how life is. And when they finally get themselves together it’s just, so sweet you can’t stop smiling and you can feel their happiness, so close to your heart. It’s a slow journey and you have to take it with them if you want to see it bear fruit, and you realize in the end it doesn’t matter how winding the paths are, because you were always going to reach that place. And stay. Like I lie in bed at one a.m. and I think about how Draco and Harry are sleeping together in Grimmauld and I wanna tear up. The prose is beautiful, and messy like the story itself, and I just adore the way everything is described, so authentic, and the way the start of the end is the beginning (no spoilers yes?) Go read it and afterwards sit at the same place for twenty minutes in complete awe and content

The Generation Who Lived by lettersbyelise

In the months leading up to the 10th anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, Draco Malfoy writes a series of articles about war survivors.

So far, he’s managed to interview everyone he wanted.

Everyone...except his old nemesis, his one-time lover, and the elusive war hero who stubbornly refuses to be featured in Draco’s interview series; Harry Potter.

This fic tackles so many different aspects of consent—and weaves them into the story itself so well. There are many controversial topics, and they were explored with honesty: nothing is shunned, nothing is avoided, there are many voices that challenge what you really think. And these are the best kind of fics, really. I especially love the characterization of Luna, because it is so difficult to get her right—but she is, wonderfully candid in her whimsical way, tripping you over in your own thought. I love Draco and Harry’s story as well, the misunderstanding and the miscommunication—the confrontation, a reminder for a lot of us that being upfront and honest is so so important. The way Draco is neither redeemed nor un-redeemed yet trying in his own way is also very dear to me.

Sharing Different Heartbeats and Let Them Wash Off in the Rain by talithan

Before Harry ever saw Draco’s room, before they ever shared a greasy order of chips or long-held secrets, before Draco’s boss ever tried to chat up Harry, they hadn’t even exchanged mobile numbers. To be fair, Draco didn’t have a mobile then.

It’s Harry’s first time in New York City, and he is determined to have a good time. How Draco Malfoy figures into this remains to be seen.

I recently discovered them and just, ahhh. Completely adore them! They are not related, just by the same author. Both are so gentle and it feels as if nothing really important is happening—and nothing is—but the feelings are there all the same, gentle too. It’s like sitting by the window listening to soft rain. The sky is grey, the lights are dim, and you’re not really thinking about anything... just listening to the rain falling...

Harry Potter is depressed and won't leave his house, or his bed if he can help it. Hermione has the bright idea to send Draco Malfoy over, who is surprisingly gentler than Harry realised, and might actually just be able to reignite a spark in Harry...if he stops being an arrogant prat of course.

(It’s a gentle story, I love the ending and the description of Harry’s depression just feels really genuine)

They say that everybody who gets out of Azkaban comes out a little mad. After the war, Draco Malfoy spends three months in Azkaban. He just wants to go insane in peace, but Harry Potter finds that he, inexplicably, still can't leave Draco alone.

When Draco ends up having to take care of Teddy’s new pet, he’s sure the universe is trying to torture him. Little does he know things are about to get so much worse. And of course, it involves one Harry Potter.

(The amount of cuddles is atrocious in the fic, I repeat, atrocious. The depth is also amazing and unexpected)

Take Into the Air (My Quiet Breath) by GuardianMira

Draco is dying of Hanahaki Disease. Serves him right, Harry thinks.

(But this is, like, the perfect Hanahaki disease fic. The perfect blend of angst and tension and relationship development with a heartbreaking, beautiful ending.)

Four Times Harry was Late...and One Time He was Late again by dracogotgame

It’s been nearly 7 months since the idea of a consent themed fest was born from a discussion in the Drarry Squad discord. It’s been said before, but it bears repeating: when we the mods first began planning the fest in earnest we discussed how 5 ficlets would be a success (and that’s with two of us writing!).

After just over 6 weeks of posting, the HD Consent Fest AO3 collection hosts:

-55 different writers and artists, including 11 who identified themselves as writing in a fest for the first time

- > 800,915 words (words embedded in comics and graphic novels not counted); average word count = 16018

-6  beautiful works of visual art, including 2 comics and a graphic novel

And these stats don’t even account for all the HYPE that followers of the fest shared—keeping the fest buzzing on AO3, tumblr, and discord via recs, chat, comments, kudos, likes, and reblogs.

Needless to say, mates, we are chuffed. You have done more than blow away our wildest hopes; you have strapped them to a rocket and shot the rock into outer space.

Part Eight Wednesday Again

“Draco!”

Draco wants to roll his eyes. He wants to shrug with a casual air of indifference. He wants to turn back around. But on seeing his mother’s face light up so immediately at his presence at the door, he can’t quite manage it. He lets himself be pulled into a hug with only a “No need to fret, Mother,” in his defence.

“I’m not fretting”, Narcissa insists, tightening her hold. “I’m hugging my son whom I haven’t seen in over a week.”

Draco relaxes and wraps his arms around his mother in return. He’s not overly keen to admit it but he’s missed her. It’s only been a week. But he has missed her terribly. And it’s all his fault.

“I love you,” Narcissa says, still holding him, as if he hasn’t shut her out for the last week, as if he hadn’t yelled at her, berated her, and said the most dreadful things.

“I love you too,” Draco says quietly in return as she finally lets go and he steps inside the Manor.

Her eyes study him carefully. A pause and then: “Have you eaten today?”

She’s brave. She’s always been so. A question like that could easily turn into an argument. In fact, it has several times in the past. But Draco’s trying to be brave too. “You already know I haven’t.”

“I’ll make you an omelette. You always used to love when your father would – “

“Mother.” Draco interrupts preparing himself to jump into the fray. It’s now or never. “Will you come with me to the hospital?”

“Oh, Draco!” Narcissa says, her eyes dangerously wet as she pulls Draco in for another hug. “Of course, of course.”

“I’m sorry for –“ Draco thinks of all the things he had send to his mother that last time he saw her. The yelling. The screaming. All because she had told him what he couldn’t bear to see himself. He has an eating disorder. Merlin, it’s still hard to even think it. But he doesn’t say all that. He settles on – “pushing you away.” She knows what he means anyway.

Narcissa pulls back to look at Draco, and yes, she’s crying, and now Draco might start crying too, fucking hell. “Don’t you think on it,” she says in a choked up voice. “You’re here now and you’re ready. I’m so proud of you, dear.”

So, when Draco arrives in St Mungo’s apparition ward, it’s hand in hand with his mother, and he’s clinging on tight, terrified to let go.

Draco tries to concentrate on the Doctor talking to him but there’s something distracting him. Something he feels like he’s missing. Something he should be doing right now. He checks the time. Just after 7pm. Dinner. He’s missing dinner. And it feels strange.

Just as Draco’s pondering this, as if accio-ed by his thoughts, who else but Harry Potter appears in the door of the hospital room, looking horribly flushed and sweaty.

The Doctor pauses for a moment to glance at the intruder.

‘How is it that you look worse than me, Potter?” Draco asks, although he’s being a little facetious. A sweaty Potter is not necessarily a bad looking Potter. Not at all.

“Work ran late,” Potter says, running a hand through his damp hair as he walks into the room. “I wanted to get here earlier to see you.”

“Pansy told you?” Draco guesses. He has a suspicion they may just be colluding behind his back.

“Yeah she…I’m glad.” Potter says, seeming unable to string a full sentence together. He looks over to the Doctor. “Sorry, I’m interrupting. I’ll wait outside.”

“Stay.”

Without another word Potter sits by Draco’s side and takes his hand, gently. How else? They both turn to the Doctor.

“For now, we’re magically feeding you, making sure you get all the nutrients your body needs. But you need to relearn how to eat on your own as well. Get rid of bad, destructive habits. I’m not going to ask you to do anything until you’re in a stronger state, but I’d like you to start thinking about a food you enjoy, maybe an old favourite food. Something that might get you to start to think positively about eating again. Can you do that?”

“Yeah…sure.” Draco watches the Doctor leave. That’s it? A favourite food? He can’t see how that’s going to get him eating again. But if it’s what the doctor orders…

“Did you have a food in mind?” Potter asks.

“I can’t think,” Draco says when noting comes to his head. He can’t recall enjoying food at all, let alone having a favourite. Just thinking about food is repulsive.

“Hold on.” Potter says, with a small smile he’s obviously trying to hide. He pulls his hand from Draco’s grip (which Draco lets go of very very reluctantly) and disappears from the room.

He returns a short time later with his hands outstretched. He’s holding a green apple. A single green apple. Draco stares at it.

“A green apple?”

“It’s your favourite, isn’t it? And I’m thinking maybe when you’re a bit better, I could make you apple pie. Or something with applesauce? Do you like that? Or, I know it sounds weird, but Hermione makes this really great apple and walnut salad. And maybe this is a little childish, but I’ve always wanted to make candied – “

Draco is listening to Harry, he really is, but he’s also staring, staring transfixed at this beautiful, compassionate man. With everything that he’s been through, no one could blame Harry if he were to become unkind, cynical, selfish. But he’s none of those things. Not even close. Despite all the darkness that has stolen its way into his life, Harry has remained a shining light, a saviour. Always. And Draco is just finding out what it’s like to have that light focused on you; it’s blinding.

At this point, even a green apple, which Harry is right, was once his favourite, isn’t anything that Draco can think positively about. It’s food. It’s repulsive. It’s wrong. But Harry Potter’s light, now there’s something very right about that.  

Draco leans up from the hospital bed, feeling stronger already. He’d like to be a romantic and say its thanks to Harry’s presence but that would do a disservice to the St Mungo’s staff who’ve been looking after him all day, to the nutrients they’ve ensured reach his stomach and refuel his body (although he’s still trying not to think too much on exactly what they put inside of him), and to the progress Draco’s made in simply accepting help from others. It’s not Harry’s presence at all. And maybe that’s more romantic. He doesn’t need Harry. But he wants him. By merlin, he wants him. So he cuts off Harry’s green apple rant – he’s now going on about Green Apple sorbet – with a soft kiss on the lips.

At least it’s meant to be soft. It starts off soft. But Draco has more energy than he has had in months, and Harry, well, Harry is equally enthusiastic. It’s not exactly how Draco pictured his first kiss with Harry. Not that he had pictured if of course. But let’s just say if, hypothetically, he had, it certainly wasn’t in a cold sterile hospital room with Draco wearing nothing but a hospital gown and Harry fully clothed.

But nonetheless, it’s perfect. And really the hospital isn’t all bad. The gown is of course. The gown is all kinds of hideous. But Draco can make it through. No, he’s going to make it through. Because Draco Malfoy is a long way from fully recovering. Perhaps he’ll never get there completely. But he’s finally ready to try.
